A legacy of generosity Vance Godbey purchased a small grocery store in Lake Worth in 1946, and helped found the Lake Worth fire department, where he served as a firefighter from 1947 to 1959. In 1955, he opened the nowfamed restaurant and catering service on the Jacksboro Highway in Lakeside that bears his name. A fire in 1962 destroyed the restaurant – Godbey rebuilt and reopened in less than 30 days. “Dad always believed the fire was the turning point in his success,” Carol said. Photos of the fire appeared in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, and customers flooded to dine at Vance Godbey’s when it reopened. Godbey was most proud of a unique benefit package that included a profit sharing plan. A longtime waitress at the restaurant, Dorothy Coleman, had accumulated $106,000 from that plan when she retired in the mid-1990s. He is known to have paid for college expenses for some em-

pairs, Smith said. “We have a lot of man hours invested into the cleanup, but we still don’t know a final dollar amount of the damage done,” Smith said. In the meantime, the Hornets exacted revenge Friday night with a 34-24 victory over the Pioneers on the very turf that was defaced. The AHS Student Council collected $240 from students and fans alike, and the group announced Tuesday the money will be donated – in the name of Boswell High School per mutual agreement between the rival high schools – to Azle’s Community Caring Center. In the end, good always wins.

Statement from EM-S ISD We at Boswell High School and Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD are disheartened by the defacing of the Azle field. We have a great respect for the Azle community, we have positive working relationships with their school and district leaders, and we have been in communication with their administrators since we became aware of the situation. The Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD community has enjoyed healthy competition with Azle for many years and, while we may compete on the field or court, when it comes to education we are all in it together. Both districts have high expectations for students and expect good sportsmanship at all our events. We continue to communicate with Azle administration. Currently, an investigation to determine any involvement of our students is taking place and the district will take appropriate action as needed.

National Night Out is Oct. 6 National Night Out is an opportunity for neighbors to interact with one another and with the police department that serves its community. Celebrated across the nation in August, most Texas communities hold Night Out activities the first Tuesday in October to beat the Texas heat. This year, the Azle Police Department is hosting National Night Out Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at 20 locations around the city. City officials, including Azle police officers, Chief of Police Rick Pippins, Azle firefighters

and paramedics, the Azle Fire Marshal, city council members and members of the Crime Control and Prevention District board will attend at various locations. Residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and gather at their neighborhood host location. It’s a good idea to bring lawn chairs and a side dish or dessert if you wish. The Azle Police Department will furnish hot dogs, buns, chips, and drinks at each location. Host locations for this year’s event include:

Garden of Hope dedicates orchard Rev. Jane Mar (Bishop Assistant, Northern Texas- Northern Louisiana Mission Area for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) presided over the Sept. 19 ceremony dedicating a new orchard addition to the community Garden of Hope. Dubbed “Sarah’s Orchard,” the name pays tribute to majority contributor Mrs. Helen Richards. Richards provided much of the funding to plant and irrigate the fruit trees and berry patch. Officials said she asked that the orchard be named “Sarah’s Orchard” in honor of her sister. Richards was born in 1916 to Celia and Hyman Karasic, who immigrated to America from Russia. She married Jobe H. Richards, Jr. after World War II in the late 1940s and moved to Fort Worth. She was the youngest of seven siblings, and died Sept. 21, 2014, shortly after making the donation, at age 98. The orchard will not productively bear fruit for another three or four years, officials noted. When the trees do begin to bear, the Garden of Hope Association (GoHA) expects to de-

The American Childhood Cancer Organization says cancers – such as leukemia, brain tumors, and sarcoma – are the number one killers of children and teens and claim more children than any other deadly disease. Accordingly, and at the request of childhood cancer activist Jeri Geary, Azle Mayor Alan Brundrett has proclaimed the month of September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the city of Azle. Information from the ACCO suggests 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; a quarter will not survive the disease. Three in five children who survive cancer will be left with lifelong side effects such as

hearing loss, deafness, loss of eyesight, learning difficulties, heart, lung or liver damage, along with many other lifeshortening diseases. Brundrett’s proclamation urges the citizens of Azle to join him in recognizing the severe lack of funding for childhood cancer. “The market for rare pediatric cancer treatments is so small that pharmaceutical companies lack the financial incentive to develop new childhood cancer medications, leaving children with limited treatment options and excessively harsh (and often unsafe) drugs and treatments that were originally formulated to treat adult cancer,” the proclamation reads.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Cornerstone Community Church. Interment will be held at Azleland Memorial Park. After a controversial week, Azle Takes the Lake Big 1st half propels Hornets past Boswell, 34-24 BY MARK K. CAMPBELL After a week of craziness that included Hornet Field being defaced and local TV stations descending on the town, Azle and Boswell settled the Take the Lake game on the field. The Hornets jumped out early and built a nice lead to win 34-24 in a contest that was not only a rivalry but the first 5-5A game of the season. A huge, boisterous crowd witnessed plenty of fireworks early. Azle’s star running back Chase Smith bolted free for a 60-yard TD to start the scoring. Then, Hornet Thomas Widder blocked a Pioneer punt and returned it for a score. Quickly, AHS led 14-0 – and almost as quickly Boswell tied it up with a pair of TD runs. Before the first quarter horn blew, Azle quarterback Nick Davis had found Bryce Gum for a 65-yard TD. When the dust settled, the Hornets led 21-14. AHS won the game with 13 more points in the second period when Smith scored on a 1-yard run between two Alex Quevedo field goals. Halftime came with Azle up

Ladies seek VB win The Lady Hornet volleyball team tumbled in a pair of 5-5A contests. Azle (0-5 in district) lost to Chisholm Trail and stateranked Boswell. Against the Lady Pioneers, Sarah Campoli’s 3 kills was tops; Megan Bagwell had 2. Juliann Boiles’ 3 set assists paced Azle. Rachel Kay and Campoli each served an ace. Next up is the end of the first round of district play when the Lady Hornets play at Saginaw Friday, Oct. 2.

comfortably, 34-14. While AHS would not score again, the Hornet defense made plays when it had to and the Azle offense – behind mighty Smith who pulverized the Pioneers for 253 yards – ran off all but 1 second of the final 8 minutes to lock down the contest. Coach Devon Dorris said the off-field chaos did not affect the Hornets: “Our kids handled Hornets swarm around a Boswell ball carrier who is losing the football. AHS racers 1st in meets BY MARK K. CAMPBELL A cross country meet can’t get much better than Azle’s outing at Holliday Sept. 26. Both varsities and the boys JV were team champs; the girls JV finished second. Boys Coach Keith Boenisch said,”We finally ran well and established the fact that we can win district and potentially get the team or an individual out to state.” Azle finished 1-2-3 with Christian McGill, Julian Hernandez, and Cody Drolet. The girls varsity was a minidistrict event. The Lady Hornets beat Saginaw, Brewer, Wichita Falls, and WF Rider. Four girls finished in the top 10 – Hadassah Marquart, MeLady Hornet Sarah Campoli puts a ball at the net down gan Green, Kylie Fonville, and for a point. Photo by Mark K. Campbell Katie Davis.

Tennis nets wins While the Azle varsity tennis squad did not win its opening match at Wichita Falls, Coach Lisa Helm lauded her team’s effort. “Although we didn’t come out on top, we had some good performances,” she recalled. Azle posted a trio of victories.

Bri Moore/Gabe Gamble won mixed doubles 8-6. Helm said, “They are hitting the ball harder and made great hustle plays.” In girls singles, Abby Davis, a freshman, won a 7-2 tiebreaker. Kade Scheller got an 8-5 victory as an alternate.

Azle rodeo duo victorious again Two Azle High School rodeo athletes pointed in the North Texas High School Rodeo Association event sponsored by the Mansfield Legacy club. Kylee Scribner won the barrel event, claiming 72 points. Austen Malone finished second in bull riding and added 65 points to his yearlong tally.

Scribner leads the barrel event with 209 points; she also sits third in pole bending with 72, an event she won in the previous week’s rodeo. The AHS cowgirl is second in the Rookie competition. Malone has 137 points in bull riding, placing him second overall.

JUNIOR HIGH Forte volleyball Forte Junior High faced a tough Wayside squad, coach Katy Cobb said. The 8th A fell 11-25, 15-25. “I’m very proud of their effort; they never gave up and went down with a fight,” coaches noted. The 8th B lost 18-25, 12-25. Coaches said they saw some good things and the team “never quit.” The 7th A also was defeated but won the only game for Forte, 25-22, 8-25, 15-24. “The girls gave Wayside more than they wanted and really gave them a scare,” said coaches. The 7th B lost 18-25, 11-25, displaying much hustle, coaches said.

Handl handles contest for cash Missing just one game in a tough week, J. Handl collected the first place $20 check in the weekly football contest. Two entrants missed two games apiece so the tie-breaker of Azle 34, Boswell 24 (58) made a $10 winner out of Bobby Boyd for his guess of 49. Third and $5 went to Royce Daniels; his guess was 42.

USA QB Azle’s Ken Seals got some good news times two recently. The eighth grader was picked to be the QB for the USA Football Under-15 National Select Team that will play at AT&T Stadium in late January or early February. Seals will also play in a junior high showcase by being the QB at the National Brett Cooper Academic All-American Bowl Jan. 2 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Azle Christian wins on the road The Azle Christian School Crusaders picked up win No. 2 on the season after a long road trip. ACS (2-3) ventured southwest of Stephenville to face the Jonesboro junior varsity and won 41-21. Coach Gary Rushing said, “The game was well played.” The Crusaders bolted out to a big lead early, the coach recalled, but had to hang on in the fourth quarter. Leading Azle Christian was quarterback Caleb Morgan. He passed for 280 yards and 5 touchdowns. Mason Dickens and Bryson Wilson hauled in 2 of those scoring aerials while John Mark Burress snagged the other one. Halfback Jacob Sweeney added a rushing touchdown on a 40-yard jaunt.

Roman Madoerin paced ACS with 7 tackles. Sweeney was also a defensive standout with a team-high 6 tackles. Josh Lehman recorded his second sack in as many weeks, Rushing said. JV – The Azle Christian junior varsity (3-1-1) tied Nazarene Christian 39-39. Next up for the varsity is a very long road trip. The Crusaders will motor all the way to Odessa Friday, Oct. 2 to tangle with the Latter Rain Knights. Even with an early game time of 6 p.m., Rushing said his squad would not be getting back until the wee hours of Saturday morning. The Odessa clash is the district opener for Azle Christian. Next week brings Cornerstone Christian to Azle.

The Rough Riders reached district play 3-0 but lost in the 5-5A opener to Rider in Wichita Falls. Azle will be Saginaw’s Homecoming game so, “they will be fired up,” AHS coach Devon Dorris said. The Riders throw and run around 50/50, Dorris said, with good receivers balanced by a “big, physical” quarterback and a solid ball carrier. “They have the best offensive line we’ve seen since Waxahachie,” the coach noted. “They are a good team.”

JV, 9th FB see Bos The football subvarsity Hornets found their Boswell counterparts formidable. The JV (1-3) fell 38-28. Artavian Harrell shone running, coaches recalled, and so did the offensive line. QB Gavin Coffey won kudos for his throwing and running. Also praised was tight end Trent Creacy for his receiving and blocking. Other standouts: Matt White, Brodie Doherty, and Drake Hinson. The 9th Green (3-1) ran past the Pioneers 28-6. Azle scored four rushing touchdowns.

Cody Akers got 2 while Jacob Garcia and Bradley Crawford added one each TDs. Kolton Van Gelder also was strong running, coaches said. Other standouts: Payton Vaughn, Havin Hill, Roni Lopez, Ryan Reynolds, Lathan Harris, and Cameron Baker. The 9th White (1-3) lost 286. Noah Vurich scored on a second quarter 39-yard run for AHS. ne day someone will get it right and can issue the greatest “I told you so!” ever. But, once again, the evening of Sunday, Sept. 28 was not that time. We were blessed with a wonderful astronomical sight that night – a blood moon that underwent a full eclipse, something that had not happened since 1982. As usual, I waited until Monday to pay my American Express bill...just in case. Alas, the world did not end. Religious folks heard things like “four blood moons” and went to digging in the Good Book. Back in ancient times – B.I., Before Internet – people rightly freaked out a bit when the moon they had come to know and love appeared to be under going an erasure before their very eyes. But, today we now know that eclipses are marvels, certainly, but the moon isn’t really disappearing. Of course many of those same Facebookers will be happy to tell you how the blood moon fulfilled some sort of biblical prophesy and if you don’t agree with them then you are a heathen and probably a Democrat. Naturally, social media-adept conservative Republicans blamed the blood moon on President Obama. That blood moon would have never occurred if Donald Trump was president. The blood moon End of Days theory dates back to 2008 then it picked up

Historic Chautauqua movement is 141 years old

I

n my reading about Western history these many years I learned of speakers and entertainments traveling throughout the West to provide a bit of culture to citizens starving for any enlightenment in their ordinary existence. The term “Chautauqua” was used. Only recently did I learn that some of these traveling speakers and shows were a spin-off from an organization that emerged on the shores of Lake Chautauqua in far western New York State that began in 1874 and is still going strong. In fact, it was an Azle resident, Dr. Dean Peyton, who told me. He and his wife Jane, just returned from a summer vacation that enjoyed the permanent Chautauqua encampment that springs to life each summer to provide culture and entertainment. A little town on the shores of Lake Chautauqua which had Victorian summer cottages, one hotel, and an openair amphitheater became the choice of Lewis Miller and Dr. John Heyl Vincent who had a dream. They made a commitment to education and opportunity for folks who wanted a little

knowledge and culture, but had not been able to go to college. They could spend a week or two, or all summer, at Chautauqua and acquire a bit of both. The two founders, Vincent, a Methodist minister, and Miller, an inventor, planned to stress “moral and intellectual guidance.” Dr. Vincent wrote that “every man has a right to be all that he can be.” The two men began their dream as a two-week educational program for Sunday School teachers. The movement began successfully, partly because Dr. Vincent edited a periodical, The Sunday-School Journal, which had a monthly readership of 100,000. He and Miller also advertised in other journals during the winter before the first opening. That first summer people came from 25 states, plus England, Scotland, Ireland, and India. By the end of two weeks, 10,000 to 15,000 had arrived, but not all at once. In the second year 30,000 attended, including President U.S. Grant. News stories that year made “Chautauqua” a household word. Miller and Vincent had leased the area – called Fair Point Camp from a Fair Point Camp Meeting Association – but the next year, 1876,

One in 1904 consisted of lectures and programs during the summer in various communities across the country that had open-air pavilions. A new Chautauqua Network began in 1983, so eight scattered halls still exist. The only one in Texas is in Waxahachie. Secondly, in 1907 Keith Vawter worked with a talent bureau and organized speakers who traveled to a different location each night during the summer. These “Chautauqua” programs consisted of music, dramatics or lectures. Nearly 100 traveling shows crossed the country each summer, and sometimes the total reached 10 million tickets in a season. The circuit did well from 1910 to the late 1920’s. Soon, however, movies, radio, etc, caused the attendance of these traveling programs to decline. By 1930 most ceased. The New York program has changed over the years and can be described as going through four phases:

1. At its beginning it was a national podium of prominent speakers and a reading club. Word spread, and many began planning a summer vacation to attend. 2. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, programs expanded to include an arts festival, but the Great Depression hurt attendance. 3. During the World War II years and afterwards, the public buildings began to decay, and not enough money came in to repair them properly. 4. In the latter decades of the twentieth century, a “renaissance” and rebuilding program began. New people either inherited or bought the old cottages and renovated them. The community expanded. A large Grounds area with meeting halls and open air pavilions exists. During the 10-week program in Chautauqua, New York this summer, about 100,000 attended for a few days or longer. Lawmakers get input on jails, suicide prevention

T

he July 13, 2015, death of Sandra Bland, a woman arrested and jailed after a traffic stop in Waller County, has prompted meetings of Texas House and Senate committees. Bland, whose body was discovered in her jail cell three days after she was put in custody, was ruled a suicide. Charged by the lieutenant governor to conduct an interim study, the Senate Criminal Justice Committee met for more than four hours on Sept. 22. The panel listened to invited testimony and discussed jail safety and inmate suicide prevention in county jails. Under direction of Committee Chair Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston, the panel received input on how inmates are assessed and processed at intake, how inmate populations are grouped and managed based on risk category and mental health condition, and how jailers are trained.

Texas Department of State Health Services Assistant Commissioner for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Lauren Lacefield-Lewis was one of many people to testify. Lacefield-Lewis said, of the entire county jail inmate population, you would expect some 30 percent to have a mental health illness, or about 20,000 inmates on any given day. Each of Texas’ 254 counties is within the catchment of a local mental health authority, Lacefield-Lewis said, and those authorities provide inpatient and outpatient services and crisis intervention under contract or simply at the request of county jail authorities. She said the state health department is working to increase access to mental health crisis services across Texas. A week earlier, on Sept. 15, the House County Affairs Committee met under the direction of Chairman Garnet Coleman, D-Houston. The panel received expert input on jail standards

Sen. John Whitmire, dean of the Texas Senate and chair of the body’s Criminal Justice Committee, on Sept. 22 requested an attorney general opinion on matters regarding the state’s new open carry laws. Whitmire is asking if the state Penal Code’s trespass provision applies to school district property, including parking lots, driveways, sidewalks and walkways; and if the Penal Code prohibits the carrying of firearms on the grounds of a school district “where educational activity is being conducted” to include parking lots, driveways, sidewalks and walkways. Volkswagen came under fire earlier this month, when news broke that its diesel vehicles’ emissions, after being marketed as environmentally friendly, have tested many times higher than promoted.

What doesn’t work The audience with the Movie Man – including hundreds of kids – hardly laughed at all. Hotel Transylvania 2 is not out-loud funny; it’s more of a smile/guffaw picture which is amazing when you consider the long list of talent behind the movie: Sandler and the slew of actors, writer Robert Smigel (who hails from Saturday Night Live, especially noted for the sometimes controversial TV Funhouse segments), and Mark Mothersbaugh (once part of Devo) with the music. One example of something that should’ve been funny but wasn’t is the great Jon Lovitz as a Phantom of the Opera who makes pithy comments on the action. But the lines are not

Summing up Hotel Transylvania 2 is cute. However, cute doesn’t cut it anymore in animation where adults expect to find some humor tidbits for themselves as the kids laugh out loud at the slapstick and wee-wee jokes.

Start, Look and Listen Prepare now for winter driving

Driving safely in extreme weather conditions demands the best wiper blades you can buy. Bosch ICON(TM) wiper blades provide a cleaner wipe and up to 40 percent longer life than other premium beam blades on the market. Now’s the time to get your car ready for the demands placed on it in the coming winter months. Especially in rain,

sleet, freezing rain, and maybe snow, you’ll want your vehicle to start and run reliably. And you’ll want your driving expe-

rience to be as safe and comfortable as possible. Here are some things to check to make your winter driving safer and more secure (www.BoschAutoParts.com). Start Most important, you’ll want your car to start reliably every time. “While routine tune-ups are not what they used to be, your vehicle still needs to have new spark plugs installed periodically,” said Mark Wilkinson, Group Product Manager, Spark Plugs for Robert Bosch LLC. Bosch is the company that in-

vented the first commerciallyviable high voltage spark plug more than a century ago. Installing new spark plugs will help assure quick starts even in very cold weather, when battery power can be severely compromised. According to Wilkinson, “Most drivers feel that the original spark plugs performed well and lasted quite a while. Our Bosch Iridium is the replacement spark plug most like the Original Equipment (OE) plugs used in many late-model cars. Bosch Iridium has optimized spark projection in the combustion chamber

and uses a fine wire electrode design for superior ignitability and performance. It is an excellent replacement plug for any car using older-technology spark plugs.” Look Visibility is critical to safe driving, and it’s doubly important when snow, sleet, and ice obstruct vision. For that reason, safer visibility in extreme winter driving conditions demand the best wiper blades you can buy, and Bosch’s Senior Product Manager for wiper blades, Makoto Takatsuka, said that

Bosch ICON(TM) wiper blades provide a cleaner wipe and provide up to 40 percent longer life than other premium beam blades in the market. Takatsuka added, “ICON’s exclusive tension spring arcing technology creates a custom fit that’s contoured to the curvature of both the driver and passenger sides of the windshield of each vehicle, unlike other blades that try to accommodate different curvatures with a single blade design. Such a compromise just can’t provide the clean, consistent wipe offered by Bosch ICON’s patented innovative design.” Listen Certainly you should listen to the advice of your trusted repair shop when it comes to safe and proper maintenance of your vehicle. Your mechanic knows your car and its history, and is best qualified to recommend needed parts and service, particularly if your shop is part of the Bosch Car Service network (www.BoschService.com). According to Michael Lippman, Concept Manager for this network, shops earning this distinction must meet strict standards for technician training, shop equipment, and customer relations, and be able to diagnose and troubleshoot the most advanced electronic safety and engine management systems. Keep your car ready to beat the cold!

Businessman dies in shooting incident said, to a point where Rogers produced a handgun and shot Bettis multiple times. Bettis, 40 and an Azle native, was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to multiple gunshot wounds, his death has been ruled a homicide by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. Rogers, 47, the owner of the property where the incident occurred, surrendered to Azle police voluntarily, according to West, and was taken into custody without incident. He was escorted to the Azle Po-

lice Department for questioning at the time of the incident and has been fully cooperative with law enforcement officials, West said. “There have been no formal charges filed at this time,” West said. “Bettis and Rogers may have known each other and the argument that took place was domestic in nature.” The investigation is still ongoing and will be presented to the Parker County Grand Jury upon its completion, West added. In addition to Azle PD detectives and officers, Tarrant Regional Water District

Lake Patrol officers, Azle Fire Marshal Kenny Wilson, and the Texas Rangers assisted in the investigation at the scene. Bettis grew up in Azle and graduated from AHS in 1993. After college, he oversaw operations at First Independent Insurance, an affiliate of First Bank and later, Pinnacle Bank, from 2000 to 2010. Bettis was active in the community as well as in the rodeo community. He is the father of two young children. See obituary elsewhere in this publication.

The year in review, Part 1: BY MARK K. CAMPBELL The earthquakes that rattled the Azle area in late 2013 hung around in 2014 – and brought with it a swarm of activists. Fires, criminals, retiring leadership, and HGTV were just a few of the happenings in the first half of 2014.

Sure enough, people – including an Elvis impersonator and some preteens – later spoke with RRC representatives in Austin about their tremor concerns. Eventually, the earthquakes stopped. On Jan. 23, a man with a gun “hearing voices” on West Columbia Drive kept Azle police at bay. With help from the Parker County Special Operations Group, Shaylor Alan Lambert was eventually forcefully removed from the house and taken into custody. The Bank of Azle foiled a forgery when teller Marlisa Godsey discovered suspicious activity – from Florida – on a customer’s account.
