TRC Technical Examiner Paul DuBois told Railroad Commissioners David Porter, Christi Craddick, and Ryan Sitton that SMU’s report “showed a weak temporal correlation between injection and seismic activity, too small, however, to imply a causal relationship without further corroborating evidence. “[SMU scientists] hypothesized, but did not attempt to establish a me-

preciated the work they had done in evaluating the models that were run and the case studies made available to the Commission. “I agree with your fi ndings,” Sitton said. “We have an opportunity to lead on this, and I appreciate your hard work.” Sitton then moved to approve the permits. Craddick seconded the motion, and both, along with Porter, voted in the affi rmative.

Three people were injured in a four-car, chain-reaction accident in the 800 block of Boyd Road Nov. 5. An Azle police report shows that three southbound vehicles were stopped in the right lane at the signal light at Boyd Road and Commerce Street, with one vehicle and a motorcycle stopped in the left lane. A black 2000 Honda Civic driven by Justin Taylor Wright, 24, of Azle, was southbound at a high rate of speed when it switched from the left to the right lane, presumably to avoid hitting the motorcycle. Instead, Wright’s vehicle struck the third vehicle in the right lane, causing the chain reaction. Wright was transported to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth with serious injuries. Peggy Eubank, 57, and her passenger, Alma Leticia Garza, 54, went to Texas Health Azle with less serious injuries. The report says unsafe speed, faulty evasive action, and an unsafe lane change on Wright’s part were contributing factors. He was cited for driving with an invalid driver’s license and for no insurance. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman

Herring Bank serves Azle in many ways The bank under the green roof at Main and Industrial Streets is always ready to serve Azle and the community in a variety of ways. Herring Bank, at 108 Industrial across the street from Dollar General, offers the usual banking amenities. But the bank also offers a series of loan options not often available – like lot financing, portfolio mortgages, and trust services. Herring Bank also serves Azle by getting involved in the community. The bank – still owned by the Herring family from its inception in Vernon in 1899 and in Azle since 2009 – has a long history of serving the communities in which it does business. In Azle, that means employees like Elizabeth Salvatore, Renee Blackburn, Lesa Newton, and Samantha Larson support Azle through volunteerism, helping out with local events, and donations. Elizabeth is the market president and has more than 20 years in banking and mortgage lending. Renee, an associate personal banker and local resident, has 15-plus years in banking and small business ownership.

If you love the Earth, you’ll eat more hamburgers

S

orry about this, militant vegetarians, but if you really think meat is murder, you’ve got a big decision to make. Because of cows. Forget cars and hair spray – the primary culprits of global warming are gassy bovines. Clearly, we need to start eating much more of them; vegetarians are going to have to step up to save our planet. If we can get cow expulsions under control, then maybe my asthma inhaler will go back to $5 instead of $30. (A law change forcing companies to use a new puffer propellant that was apparently terrorizing the ozone jacked up the price.) The problem with cows is that they

ing to thwart emit 200 liters of methane gas every we carnivores’ day. Since I live in the United States, efforts to save I’m not too sure how much that actuour blue planet ally is in American, but it sounds like if they don’t a lot. Anyway, there are over 1.8 billion I can eat a lot cows going to town – gas- and poopof cow meat wise – on the Earth every day, so if my but, after a few math is correct, that’s a lot of methane hundred milspewing out of various bovine orifices. lion pounds, Something has got to be done about ON YOUR I’m probably these cows. going to fall Let’s eat ‘em! MARK out. VegetarAccording to climate change experts, probably, if we all would eat a Mark K. Campbell ians are going to have to do bunch of cows, we’d quit having hurricanes and terrible droughts. (Maybe their part. In a 2014 study (Googled!), it was I should Google that.) This is where vegetarians are go- discovered that cows are responsible

for 13 million tons of methane annually. By contrast, oil and gas contributed only 7 million in that same time frame. (Glenn Beck just did a happy back flip.) Another bonus for vegetarians eating cows is that there’d eventually be more food for vegetarians since the fewer critters (the cows, I mean) will be leaving much more plant life for vegetarians to consume. It’s a win-win for them (the vegetarians), really. Knock back a few zillion burgers and then it’s all-you-can-eat grass forever. Now, other animals are responsible for gas emissions, too, and I don’t mean just firefighters. Each sheep will fire out 17.6 pounds of gas every year and pigs 3.3 pounds.

(Pigs are already under the knife of public opinion since bacon is reported to lead to cancer. At least that’s what they said last week.) The average human emits 0.26 pounds of gaseous funk annually. (The Bride will attest that I have had days when I reached that mark by noon.) We’re light-weights. The key to reducing methane gas emissions is fixing cows’ stomachs – they need to digest better. Surely someone at Texas A&M is working on combining hay with Tums or Maalox. There, I just fixed global warming. You’re welcome, world. Let’s eat! Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and actually prefers Gas-X.

T Letter to the editor Take care with weapons over the upcoming holidays Dear Editor, With the holidays approaching, I am writing to remind your readers to be sure their firearms are secured from visiting children and other guests. A handgun or other firearm used for protection should be secured but quickly accessible using a gun vault. Other firearms should be unloaded and secured with a locking device or

placed in a locked container like a gun case or safe. Ammunition is to be stored separately and locked up. Hiding a firearm is not sufficient to prevent accidents. Allowing a child to gain access to a loaded firearm is negligent, lifethreatening and against the law. Please handle and store your firearms safely and responsibly all year round. I hope everyone has safe and happy holidays.

Email your letters to opinion@azlenews.net, and express your opinion on things that matter to you and your community. Letters should be brief and focus on a single issue. Several migrations of people took place in or to U.S.

F

rom the time the pilgrims stepped off the deck of the Mayflower onto the shores of the British colonies in North America, people have been migrating here. Once the east coast was settled reasonably well, folks moved westward, cleared forest land and raised crops. Although small, the next migration consisted of the mountain men and fur trappers who crossed the Mississippi River and followed the Missouri into the Rocky Mountains in pursuit of beaver fur. At the same time, Southerners moved due west into Texas after the Lone Star Republic broke away from Mexico. Then in the 1840s, wagons began the long trek to the Oregon Country. Similar migration occurred on the Santa Fe Trail, which began as a supply train of merchants. These early migrations were only a trickle until California gold lured thousands from all over the world in hopes of getting rich overnight. Irish and Germans began migrating to America in fairly large numbers in the 1850s to escape problems in their countries.

THE

Not many large migrations came until land rushes in the 1880s and 1890s into Indian Territory increased population, creating the state of Oklahoma. From there and other central plains Dust Bowl states folks migrated west in the 1930s to California in search of better jobs as their top soil blew away. According to author Isabel Wilkerson, in her Pulitzer Prize winning book The Warmth of Other Suns, the largest migration of American people within their own country occurred in the period from 1915 to 1970 and was called the Great Migration. Thousands of blacks from the South left the discrimination of the Jim Crow laws to seek better conditions. Some traveled northeast from the Southern states on the Atlantic seaboard to states on the east coast. Other folks from the middle South states of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee traveled by train due north to Illinois and Wisconsin. Blacks from Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas generally traveled west to California. Of course, there were exceptions, but this was the pattern many followed. In the South many left tenant farms

where they had labored in the fields long hours during the season only to be told at harvest that the money they earned only covered what the tenant had borrowed on credit during PAGES FROM the year. The WESTERN owner of the was boss, HISTORY land and no recourse J’Nell L. Pate existed. By the 1970s 47 percent of all blacks lived outside of the South. Many fled because of lynchings of black men or teenage boys because of infractions no more serious than speaking to or being friends with a white female. In addition, their jobs were always lower paying than for whites. During the decade including World War I, 555,000 blacks left the South. They did not ride in covered wag-

ons traveling only 15 to 20 miles a day like earlier pioneers, but in buses and trains that reached their destinations quickly. Sometimes a decision to move north came after a man served in the war and witnessed a broader world of opportunities than the South offered. After a few family members escaped the South, others might visit and see the freedoms their relatives enjoyed that were denied them. The census figures for blacks in California in 1940 showed 124,306. Within a decade their population almost tripled at 337,866. A quarter million more came in the 1960s. The city of Chicago went from being 1.8 percent blacks in 1900 to 33 percent in 1970. Detroit went from 1.4 percent to 44 percent in the same decades. In the 1920s 903,000 blacks left the South; in the 1930s 480,000; 1940s, 1.6 million; 1950s, 1.4 million; and a million blacks left their homes in the 1960s to try their luck in either the east, north or west. Some historians say these figures may be low. One difference in the black migration from the European one, is that the blacks could not lose their identity by

mixing in with the people already there. Within a generation the children of the European immigrants often became unrecognizable as newcomers and were accepted as having lived in the North for decades. No so the black children. Blacks who came north earned a higher income than their counterparts who stayed in the South. Children of the black migrants gained better educations and opportunities because their parents moved north, east or west. The same is true for children of immigrants from other countries. America attracts foreign immigrants seeking a better life, but within its borders folks continue to migrate to different parts of the country with the same goal in mind. The Great Migration of blacks was one not noted or documented very well until Isabel Wilkerson's excellent book was published in 2010. Even living in a country whose residents pick up and migrate frequently, all my life I've lived no more than 60 miles from where I was born! Gov. conditions issuance of grants on ICE compliance

ov. Greg Abbott says Texas sheriffs won’t receive grant funds from his Criminal Justice Division unless they comply with U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement notification and detention requests. In a Nov. 4 letter, Abbott wrote to sheriffs: “Beginning now, all Criminal Justice Division grant awards will require that sheriffs departments fully honor ICE’s detention requests for criminal immigrants. “Any applicant that cannot certify that their office will honor all ICE detainers for criminal immigrants will be ineligible for CJD funding. Further, any applicant that certifies full compliance with ICE detainer requests – but subsequently fails to honor an ICE detainer – will be subject to claw-back provisions and must refund the full amount of their CJD grant award.” “As governor,” Abbott continued, “I simply will not allow CJD grant funding administered by this office to support law enforcement agencies that refuse to cooperate with a federal law enforcement program that is intended to keep dangerous criminals off Texas streets.” On Oct. 26, Abbott sent a

University of Texas case that has been in litigation since 2008. Attorneys for the plaintiff contend the university’s admissions policy violates the “equal protection clause” of the Fourteenth Amendment because it allows an applicant’s race to be considered as a factor in the admissions process. Despite remarkable Ramos performance, Azle denied postseason by Rider, 47-35 By MARK K. CAMpBELL It was one of those rare nights. And it was really one of those rare nights. When all was said and done, Azle (5-5, 3-4) lost to Wichita Falls Rider 47-35 at Hornet Field and saw postseason hopes disappear. Sometimes in high school football, the final regular season game means everything – not just the outcome of your game but the score in other contests for tie-breakers. It was one of those unusual nights where Azle was not only trying to beat Rider, but – thanks to Brewer defeating Saginaw a few miles away – the Hornets needed to top the Raiders by 18 or more points. That’s where the really rare event occurred. Azle senior Trey Ramos turned in one of the greatest performances in school history against Rider. In just the first half, he scored four touchdowns – two via pass, one running, and one on an interception return. Not only were rival coaches and fans impressed, but Ramos was lauded by his own coaches. Defensive coordinator Bob Gilbreath said, “He had one of the most outstanding games for an individual that I have ever seen.” And head coach Devon Dor-

ris echoed the sentiments, “ He scored four TDs three different ways. He’s a heck of a football player.” The game was a wild one. At halftime, Azle led 28-27 thanks to four scores by Ramos on a first quarter 3-yard run, a 27-yard pass from QB Nick Davis, a 32-yard interception return on a perfectly timed pick, and a 58-yard pass from Davis. The Hornets still led as the fourth quarter began, 35-33. That AHS TD came when Chase Smith, another senior, roared right up the middle untouched for 41 yards. But, thanks to Brewer romping Saginaw, AHS was in the difficult position to have to take an 18-point lead. Coach Dorris said he took chances he might otherwise not have taken, to try to boost the advantage. With the score 35-33, the Hornets needed lots of points quickly. A fumble deep in Rider territory hurt – as did 2 more Raider TDs as the game wound down. Rider would rush for 332 yards and eat up the clock. Dorris said, “We played with a lot of heart, a lot of passion; I was proud.” Ramos’ mighty outing also included 28 tackles – making it Hornet Trey Ramos bolts into the clear against Wichita Falls Rider. Football seasons end against Rider

Subvarsity and junior high squads turned in superior seasons and performances in 2015. The JV Green (7-2) beat Rider on a late 32-yard field goal. The 9th Green (8-1) defeated Rider 27-24, going unbeaten in district play. Lathan Harris had his best game on defense, coaches recalled. Bradley Crawford picked off 2 Raider passes. Offensively, Christian Morales scored 2 TDs on long passes from Cody Akers of 56 and 65 yards. Tyler Jenson got AHS on the board with a 12-yard first quarKylie Fonville (left) was the 2015 Lady Hornet Cross ter run and Crawford scored on Country Most Valuable Runner and Abigail Kortokrax a 15-yard jaunt. earned the “Extra Mile Award.”

The 9th White (1-8) lost 22-6 in a rainy game delayed by lightning. Dallas Joseph got the AHS frosh score on a 22-yard run in a game that was 8-6 at halftime. Cody Weisensale and Noah Vurich QB’d. Pacing the Azle D were Xander Salsman and Robert Kimbell. Hornet head football coach Devon Dorris said the program had a strong year all along the grades. “The current 7-10 grades might be the best four back-toback classes in Azle ever,” he said. The junior highs played near .500 and are “filled with talent,” Dorris said.

ACS FB year ends Last contest wild Azle Christian School found itself in a strange position: not in the state football championship. After five straight appearances in the title game and three championships – all under Coach Gary Rushing – the 6-man Crusaders’ season ended early in the playoffs with an 8452 loss to St. Paul Prep. The foes scored on 12 of 13

possessions, and ACS (5-5) struggled to keep up, Rushing said. John Mark Burress led the Crusader offense with 125 yards rushing on 10 carries; he also caught 5 balls for 100 yards and scored 5 touchdowns. QB Caleb Morgan threw those TD aerials to Burress; Morgan finished with 250 yards passing.

The final football contest of the year was substantially logjammed for places two and three. An outright winner was clear: Wes Robinson missed only 2 games and won the last $20 of 2015. The remaining two payoff places was crowded with no fewer than 9 prognosticators who missed 3 games apiece. Plus, two of them had the exact same tie-breaker of 36. Splitting $15 – $7.50 each – with guesses of 48 were John Hagerman and Margaret Swanzy. Too far off were Bobby Boyd (53), Kevin Wilson (56), Blondie Robinson (57), Eddy Swanzy (58), Steve Parker (61), Jerry Hendrix (65), and Lulu Hendrix (70).

Azle wrestlers vie on distant mats By MARK K. CAMpBELL With the high school wrestling season beginning Saturday, plenty of AHS athletes ventured out of Texas to get ready. Four Lady Hornets – Lauren Dale, Hali Davis, Trinity Smith, and Mackenzie Sinkovec – competed in Iowa at a women’s preseason nationals event on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. Davis finished third overall. Dale missed reaching a placing round by a single match, falling to the same Wisconsin girl twice, Azle Coach Chris Allen said. ... on a scale of 1-10

Movie Man The opening titles are cool and borderline creepy with a multi-tentacled critter writhing around girls and Craig. The sequence also helps you catch up on major developments from prior Craig Bonds. Director Sam Mendes, who also made Skyfall, follows the Bond template of pretty girls, several chases in a variety of vehicles, long fi ghts, and lovely views of distant lands. He also injects some sly nods to many previous Bond movies throughout Spectre. Best scene The opening shot in the movie is fantastic. It’s very long, several minutes, and is a detailed, exceptionally complex shot that goes from high above a parade, down to the ground, into a building, up an elevator, into a bedroom, out on a building’s edge, and to an assassin’s perch. It’s reminiscent of the famous opening shot from Boogie Nights (1997, MM #205, 4) that you can see on Netfl ix right now – but, beware, it’s a very hard R if you keep watching. The scene, combined with the following unique credits, make the fi rst 10 minutes of Spectre fabulous. However…

After Craig, the rest of the actors get short shrift. Of course, this is a Bond movie, but Fiennes and Waltz are in the picture far too little. Few things are more boring than a car chase that goes on too long and there’s one here.

The rating This is a Bond movie. It’s full of innuendo, some carefully shot skin, an occasional vulgarity, and, of course, a lot of violence. It’s an OK PG-13. Summing up Whoever the next Bond is, there’s no denying that Craig has elevated the role. The series will likely continue down the same road, but the Movie Man wouldn’t mind seeing the franchise lighten up a bit.

Spectre bogs down severely about 30 minutes in. The movie feels every bit of its 2 hours, 28 minutes; it should be shorter. The fi nal epilogue is a real dud.

Campaign aims to stop 15-year streak of state road deaths

Someone has died on a Lone Star roadway every day since Nov. 2000 BY MISTY SHAW It’s been 5,478 days – and counting – that Texas has gone a single day without a fatality automobile accident. That’s 15 consecutive years of daily deaths on roadways statewide. November 7 marked a “grim milestone” as a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) press release put it: At least one road fatality has occurred daily since the year 2000, totaling 51,832 lives lost. In 2014 alone, 15 people died on roadways in Parker County and five in rural Tarrant County, according to state data. And with the busy holiday travel season coming up, TxDOT is urging motorists to help end this awful trend. You can read the story of this terrible wreck from the point of view of reporter Carla Noah Stutsman on the Opinion page; her daughter was a passenger in the collision that killed three teenagers in 1996.
