Christmas On Main Street sure to become tradition BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Downtown Azle was busier than Santa and all the elves Saturday, Dec. 5. Christmas on Main Street – the fi rst one ever presented by the Azle Women’s Business Association – was deemed a huge success by those who came out to shop, eat festival food, watch, or participate in the many activities the event provided. Vendor booths lined both sides of the roadway, and no one seemed to be the least bit bothered by temporary stop signs manned by Azle police of-

fi cers. The signs provided safe crossing for pedestrians and kept vehicular traffi c at an appropriate, slow pace throughout the day. Meanwhile, The Optimist Club of Azle hosted many children’s activities, including a Santa Claus photo op and a bicycle giveaway at 404 Main Place from 2-5 p.m. At 5, sounds of a community singalong drew a crowd to the Azle Historical Museum, where State Representative Charlie Geren led the fi nal countdown to the lighting of the offi cial Azle Christmas Tree.

The district issued a statement Tuesday, Dec. 8 noting that Rollins’ incidents were under investigation. She resigned the next day.

spokesperson for Tarrant County Sheriff’s Offi ce, Bowhay was a passenger in a red 4-door passenger car that was southeast-bound on the Jacksboro Highway service road. A gray 2-door passenger car had crossed the overpass westbound on Confederate Park Road and came to a

Angels still need adopting BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

If not for you, a child right here in Azle may not have Christmas. You can change all that by adopting an angel from one of many Angel Trees placed in schools and businesses all over town. Just pick out the angel you want, and fulfill that angel’s Christmas list to the best of your ability. Then place your gifts in a bag – unwrapped – and return them to the Azle Memorial Library, 333 W. Main St.

Each angel will receive a set of clothing, shoes, a winter coat and a toy. Cash donations as well as volunteers are needed to ensure a successful year for the Angel Tree project. Donations may be dropped off at the library. The deadline is Dec. 10 – but Lions Club President Current McLane says as long as there are angels out there, gifts and donations alike will be accepted. Just bring them to the library as soon as possible. Also, after Dec. 10, any an-

gels who have not yet been adopted will be brought from other locations and placed on the library’s Angel Tree. Find Angel Trees here through Dec. 10: • Anytime Fitness, 248 Park St. • Azle Cafe, 1119 Boyd Rd. • Azle Memorial Library, 333 W. Main St. • Bransom Real Estate, 200 W. Avoid getting browbeaten this Christmas

I

’m pretty sure I have discovered a Christmas present for the women – and maybe a few men – who have everything. After all, who doesn’t want their eyebrows to look better? Until I married a female, I had no idea how important things like eyebrows and eyelashes were. 1978 BRIDE: Ah, look at those long eyelashes on that sweet baby! 1978 ME: What baby? It’s been my experience that males don’t notice or much care about eyebrows or eyelashes – on anybody. However, it’s a really big thing to some. That fact was driven home when I came upon an “advertisement Q&A” in the back of a recent Texas Monthly.

The person being interviewed was a beauty conscious woman ironically named Natalie Plain. Really. She is the CEO of Billion Dollar Brow. Ms. Plain begins, “When I was young, my mom took me to a brow professional in Beverly Hills.” Now, I don’t know about you, but my parents did not take me to Beverly Hills when I was a child. We once went to Lake Texoma and camped out, using defunct electric blankets as flooring where you’d wake up the following morning with the control knob jammed into your back. At Beverly Hills, Ms. Plain said the experience made her feel “special and polished.” But things got away from her; later at college, she confessed that she had “over-plucked” and did not

look her best. Employing her American can-do spirit, she created a moisturizer called Brow Boost then expanded into more products. She kindly a tip for ON YOUR issued keeping your MARK brows lookMark K. Campbell ing their best: “ S y m m e t r y, symmetry, symmetry.” This is not advice that former Congressman Jim Wright followed certainly. Ms. Plain must’ve bolted up-

right in bed screaming whenever she dreamt of the wild-browed public servant. Wright certainly could’ve used Ms. Plain’s BDB Brow Buddy. Or course, his Buddy would have to gasolinepowered to mow through that eye maze. The Brow Buddy helps you find that elusive symmetry, because – let’s face it – you don’t want to look like an idiot with one brow flat-lined and the other resembling the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Fortunately many of us around here are eyebrow aware: “Texas fans have been some of the most vocal eyebrow enthusiasts around,” said Ms. Plain. I’m pretty sure that sentence had never existed in the history of mankind until

the December Texas Monthly. Billion Dollar Brow is on the cutting edge of brow fashion, noting that in some parts of the world, “there is some resistance to the ‘modern’ eyebrow,” Ms. Plain noted. Not in Texas! “Texas women are eager to embrace their best brows,” Ms. Plain said. So, if you’re struggling for a Christmas gift that shows you are a fashionfriendly person, you might want to consider something from Billion Dollar Brow. As for me, I’m waiting for Zillion Dollar Nose Hair or Quadrillion Dollar Ear Hair cosmetics where I am the reigning Jim Wright. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and has been told he has “thin lips.”

Western pioneers used various home remedies for illness

E

njoying the study of pioneers may also involve learning about their daily living, the foods they ate and their remedies for illnesses. Once on a trip with a friend to a southern plantation with re-enactors wearing long dresses and bouffant petticoats, she said, “Wouldn't you have loved to have lived back then?” “No. They didn't have air conditioning! Think how hot those dresses were! Besides,” I added, “you and I might have been in the hot kitchen cooking instead of out here all dressed up.” Learning the lifestyle of historic characters can help us learn more about them, but also to appreciate our easier lives today. I thought of all this when I ran across a book called Home Remedies From Amish Country. The Amish practice some of that old timey living with their horse and buggy travel even in the 21st century. From that book and other sources I found some medical practices of our ancestors. One of the first I found was one I already knew. Keep aloe vera

THE

plants around the house. Then if you accidently burn yourself, cut a piece and use the gel-like juice that comes out on the burn. It quits hurting pretty quickly. I didn't previously know some other remedies I found. Put pure honey on the burn, cover it with a clean, white cloth. Honey kills germs and even keeps the burn from leaving a scar. In fact, some say to apply honey to any wound to kill germs. Others say peel a potato and rub it on the burn. Iron and potassium in the potato will ease the pain. Pioneers had to deal with the common cold without the advantage of a nearby CVS or Walgreens. Some recommended raw onions and garlic. I suppose one would eat them, but they wouldn't give anyone else their cold because their friends would keep their distance! For the relief of a cough some old timers mixed lemon juice and honey, half and half. Or one could make a hot lemon tea and sweeten with honey. For a sore throat gargle equal amounts of honey, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice.

Then one optimistic Amish gentleman suggested that two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in one-half glass of water two or three times a day would be good for losing PAGES FROM weight, heartWESTERN burn, hayfever, kidney HISTORY trouble and J’Nell L. An Amish lady suggested that the same remedy with honey added would be a “way to stay healthy and alert, well into old age.” Lemon juice or vinegar in your bath water will ease a rash as well as baking soda, they say. remedy! To relieve the rash of poison ivy or poison oak rub the insides of a banana on the skin, or use raw potato slices, cabbage or red beets. Or try olive oil. In the West (which was Kentucky, the Ohio area and anywhere else west of the settlements on the east coast in the early days) folks had to use simple remedies like those suggested. Selfstyled doctors often rode a circuit like preachers. Instead of Bibles, the pioneer doctors carried saddle bags of herb and root medicines. Some even got their remedies from the Indians. Ingredients for cures included cayenne pepper, snake root, sage, skunk cabbage, etc. to cure croup, diarrhea, or to prevent smallpox or cholera. Ingredients the westward-moving pioneers sometimes carried with them to cure common ailments were garlic, coal, Caster oil, turpentine and kerosene. Quacks selling “patent medicines” in the West often bottled alcohol, cocaine, opium, or morphine. They made the patient “feel no pain” for sure! The Pure Food and Drug Act of

1906 put an end to that! Harsh conditions in the early West created circumstances that many could not survive. Of newborn children, one infant of every six or seven did not survive the first year. Even after age one, one out of every four or five would not live to adulthood. To illustrate the point, on my father's side, my Rogers grandparents had 12 children, but only nine reached adulthood. My mother's parents, the J.C. Riggs, had 13 children, of which Mother was the twelfth, and two died in infancy. Most of my aunts and uncles were born in the 19th century, although both my parents were born in the 20th. My dad was born in 1900 and mother in 1905. (P.S. They had me much later in their marriage! I'm old, but not ancient!) Disclaimer! I'm not suggesting that readers try any of these remedies. Desperate people on a frontier used the materials that they had. Some perhaps worked; others did not. Paxton amends approach to resettlement of refugees

T

exas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Dec. 4 withdrew his request for a temporary restraining order to put a hold on the federal government’s plan to relocate Syrian refugee families in Texas. Paxton, as the state’s chief law enforcement officer, initiated the court action on behalf of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, the state agency potentially most involved with the resettlement process. In an explanation of his reasoning, Paxton cited the U.S. Refugee Act of 1980, a law requiring that the federal government consult with state authorities in advance of such relocations. Paxton said, in effect, that his request for the restraining order prompted the federal government to provide information

that he said would help resolve security concerns about the first group of refugees set to arrive in Texas. Still, however, Texas continues to seek a federal court injunction requiring the federal government to consult with state authorities before resettling refugees. According to the state attorney general’s office, Texas takes in roughly 10 percent of the refugees resettled in the United States, partnering with local volunteer agencies to help refugees transition to the state and pay associated costs. "Texas shouldn’t have to go to court to require Washington to comply with federal law regarding its duties to consult with Texas in advance,” Paxton commented. "Our state will continue legal proceedings to ensure we get the information necessary to adequately protect the safety of Texas residents.

While we remain c o n cerned about the federal government's overall refugee vetting process, STATE we must CAPITAL e n s u r e TexHIGHLIGHTS that as has the Ed Sterling seat at the table that the Refugee Act requires.” Border security panel meets Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick acknowledged "strong pleas for state assistance” after a Dec. 3 Senate interim committee hearing on border security. Patrick said he is "committed to work with the Senate, both

during this interim and the remainder of my term in office, to make sure that assistance is provided.” During the hearing, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw testified that over the last four years more than 174,000 undocumented individuals had been arrested and booked into Texas jails. A.J. Louderback of Texas Sheriffs’ Association also testified, saying PEP — the Priority Enforcement Program of ICE, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, "significantly weakens how we protect the state.” Under PEP, ICE seeks the transfer of a removable individual when that individual has been convicted of an offense listed under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s civil immigration enforcement priorities, has intentionally participated in an organized crimi-

nal gang to further the illegal activity of the gang, or poses a danger to national security. Patrick, who presides over the Texas Senate, said, “While securing the border is a responsibility of Washington, D.C., it is still a Texas problem. That’s why the Senate led the way during the last session to provide funding for border security at the highest levels in history.” Abbott takes group to Cuba Gov. Greg Abbott and first lady Cecilia Abbott are back in Texas after leading a group of two dozen members of the governor’s staff and economic development team and representatives of economic interests "with a stake in increased trade with and travel” to Cuba. The group included officials from the ports of Houston, Beaumont and Corpus Christi, plus Houston’s airports. News of the Nov. 30-Dec.

3 trip was posted by the governor’s office in a series of press pool reports by the Austin American-Statesman. In one of those reports, Cuba’s minister of foreign trade and investment told Gov. Abbott that he believes “the normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States is an inexorable process that won’t be reversed no matter who is elected president in 2016.” “This is an historic process,” said Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz. "It's historic because it’s been a long time and a lot of administrations and there weren’t any changes, and now is when the changes are taking place. We think this process is irreversible, it’s not going to be taken back.” Veteran state reporter and legislative analyst Ed Sterling is member services director for the Texas Press Association, whose 518 member newspapers have combined circulation of 3.7 million.

Hornets rally to beat the Porcupines By mArk k. CAmPBELL Azle is a powerful wrestling team with a well-deserved reputation statewide. But Springtown came to the new gym Dec. 3 and rocked the Hornets, AHS Coach Chris Al len said. Azle rebounded to win the dual battle by 11 points, but Allen had praise for the Porcupines. “Give Springtown all the credit; their coaches and kids came in ready to wrestle and they were really solid at several weights,” Allen said. The Porcupines were “more aggressive” and, with the Hornets “a little unfocused,” the

dual was close most of the way. The coach said, “We just did enough to come out with a win.” Perhaps the clash will serve as a wake-up call with district duals arriving Dec. 10 – at Springtown. Azle will keep its usual routine, Allen said. “As we always do, we are just back at work, trying to pick up intensity and concentrating on position and chain wrestling” He added that he expects the Hornets to compete “like we are capable of” at SHS. The girls will head to the Texas Ladies Classic at Frisco Hornet Shawn Joseph has a Porcupine on his back. Azle battled back to defeat an aggressive Springtown squad at the AHS gym Dec. 3. Hornets fall to Porcupines, 60-52 It was a bit like the old days when Azle was facing former archrival Springtown on the new gym’s hardwood Dec. 1. The game was close for much of the contest, but the visitors left with a 60-52 win. The Porcupines opened with a 16-10 first quarter advantage, but AHS got 2 points back by halftime. The teams played the final three

quarters within two points of each other in each period, but Azle could not reel Springtown in. Bowen Moyer had a big game with 17 points to pace the Hornets. Three other Hornets scored well: Cole Maxfield with 9 and Jason Crane and Dylan Flynn with 8 points apiece. Dylan Frost got 4 points and Josh Golliday and Nathan Ulshafer added 2 points each.

Azle duo get rodeo wins AHS rookie cowgirl Kylee Scribner turned in the fastest pole bending time and Austen Malone won bull riding at the North Texas High School Rodeo Association event sponsored by the Flower Mound Marcus club. Overall for the season, Malone is first in bulls while Scribner sits fourth in poles and fifth in barrels.

Hoops girls play in tournaments It was tourney time for the Azle girls basketball squads. The varsity (3-7) opened the Brewer tournament Dec. 3 against Burkburnett, losing a close one, 37-36. Payton Berger led AHS with 16 points and 14 boards, a doubledouble. Savannah Johnson added 8 points and Kaycie Dunkerley returned with 6 points. The next day, Azle popped Irving 49-45. Berger was hot again with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Bailey Natusch grabbed 10 boards. A 36-20 loss to Byron Nelson followed. Berger (7) and Kylee Browne (6) led AHS scorers. The final game of the tourney was a 56-7 blowout of FW Diamond Hill with Berger scoring

16 points and Dunkerley adding 12. The JV beat Northwest 3130 with Autumn Johnson scoring 15 points. Next, Azle fell to Argyle 50-24; Macey Hicks and Johnson scored 9 points each. Boswell topped Azle 5044 despite a monster game by Johnson who scored 28 points. The frosh lost to Keller 1916 as Kenliegh Browne got 9 points then fell to Fossil Ridge 31-28; Ximena Gonzalez and Brylee White had 6 points each. Two wins followed – over Boswell 42-24 as Avery North led with 9 points and Timber Creek 41-7 with three girls reaching double digits: North 12, Browne 11, and Barbara Rueda 10.

Junior HigH Basketball The Forte 8th A boys fell to Creekview despite “a great effort,” coaches noted. Named the FHS MVPs were Jacob Edwards and Braxton Thomason. The Forte 8th B limited the Colts to just 8 first half points, but, because the B struggled to score, too, FJH fell. The squad’s MVP was Conner Smith. The Azle 7th A girls put 40 points on Highland and beat the Lady Hawks. Reagan Sawyer poured in 28 points to pace the Lady Hornets. Also scoring were Aubrey Nor ton (8) and Jaycee Dinkins and Caitlyn Weiss (4 each). Shining on defense, Coach Alyssa Brownback noted, were Jaelynn Berrera, Kalli Talmage, Norton, and Weiss.

Movie Man

Azle News Wednesday, December 9, 2015

Rocky’s return packs an emotional punch Sylvester Stallone is pulling off a late career miracle. And, since the Movie Man is a Stallone fan, he’s happy about that. And, to begin this discussion of Creed, here’s a decades old happy story. About the film In the early spring of 1977, Movie Man and Movie Wife bought movie tickets for $2.50 each. Rocky was still in theaters and Movie Man and Movie Wife waited in line – again – to get in, even months after the boxing movie’s December 1976 opening. However, this was a special showing of Rocky: It boasted a sneak preview, a second, unnamed mystery movie. Back in those days, there was little information attached to the notice that a sneak was around. A simple newspaper ad would announce a chance to see an upcoming movie – maybe a “thriller starring today’s hottest actor” or, in this case, a “comedy by one of today’s funniest directors” or something like that. So, we shuffl ed through the line and enjoyed Rocky once more. Then, another movie began: Woody Allen’s colossal Annie Hall. It surely remains the best $2.50 the Movie Man ever spent. Now, about Rocky. Like Elvis Presley or the Beatles or The Exorcist (1973) or Star Wars (1977-83), you kind of had to be there to fully appreciate the Rocky phenomenon. The movie ran forever. Stallone became a star overnight, his story of refusing to sell his script unless he could star in it – even while he lived in near-squalor – told and retold. The main theme – “Gonna Fly Now” – became a monster hit, peaking at No. 1 in May of 1977, Bill Conti’s only Top 40 entry. The entire soundtrack was also a tremendous success. Of course, Rocky Balboa went on to more movies. In the second one in 1979, Rock defeated Apollo Creed. Then,

in 1982, Mr. T became famous as brute brawler Clubber Lang who beat then lost to Rocky. In Rocky IV (1985), Balboa faced evil Soviet fi ghter Drago, who earlier killed Apollo in a bout. By the time Rocky V (1990) came along – Rocky becomes a trainer – the series joined the Rolling Stones as the butt of many Steel Wheelchair/ Rocky XVIII jokes, jabbing icons for staying around too long. However, Stallone later gave Rocky a decent return with Rocky Balboa (2005, Movie Man No. 698, 6). Today, Rock is back for a seventh movie, Creed. Stallone has already won an acting award, from the prestigious National Board of Review as Best Supporting Actor. Yay for Stallone. The plot The son of the late Apollo Creed, Adonis (Michael B. Jordan, putting the pitiful Fantastic Four [Movie Man No. 1151, 3] behind him), desires a mentor and seeks out his dad’s old pal, Rocky Balboa (Stallone); but Jordan doesn’t want to ride his father’s coattails. Stallone is hesitant to take the job, but Jordan won’t take no for an answer. Soon, the duo is working together. Jordan trains under the name Johnson, distancing from being a Creed and
