Wynn named Azle’s No. 1 citizen for 2013 BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Dennis Wynn found himself back at the podium at the annual Azle Chamber Awards Banquet Feb. 7. In 2012, he was picked as the Ambassador of the Year. In 2013, Wynn claimed the coveted Citizen of the Year hon-

The humble Wynn was clearly surprised – and certainly deserving.

A neck injury ended his sales career. A massive blood clot in his right leg from the surgery restricted his standing and sitting forcing him to slow down his lifestyle. “It was then I had some time to get involved with my community,” Wynn said. Meeting Jon Presnell, Wynn

joined the Chamber of Commerce in 2005 and became an Ambassador in 2006. “That was the turning point in my involvement,” he said. He added, “I didn’t have to volunteer for anything. I had two friends – Lonnie Reed and Jack

Member of the Year awarded to Davis BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN A combination of grit and persistence, appreciation of the arts as well as her own artistic talents and a heapin’ helpin’ of Southern charm and hospitality are just a few of the characteristics that garnered Peggy Davis the 2013 Southern Star Award for Chamber Member of the Year. Known as a “doer” who prefers to live outside the limelight, Davis’ most recent project was completed just last month and graces the westbound lanes of State Highway 199 near the Wells Burnett overpass. The “Azle” sign is the second such project spearheaded by Davis – the first sits atop a little hill on FM 730 North (Boyd Road) and welcomes motorists driving in from the Briar and Boyd areas to Azle. Davis originally hails from Mississippi and grew up in Houma, Louisiana. She attended Louisiana Tech before she and her husband moved to Azle in 1990. She has volunteered with Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle’s Levis and Lace fundraiser; the Azle Memorial Library Gala; Azle First United Methodist Church Lord’s Acre; and the Oak Harbor Women’s Club. She is the founder of the Azle Garden Tour of Homes for the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce and even hand painted all the tile to describe the native environment at Azle’s Central Park. The Azle sign was a complicated project that involved fundraising along with coordination between the artist/designer/architect, the Azle Area Chamber

Citizen of the Year for 2013: Dennis Wynn ■ CITIZEN, FROM PAGE 2.

Allen – they volunteered me for everything.” Wynn invested and immersed himself in Azle. Church and service Church is vital to him and his wife Linda. They attend New River Fellowship in Weatherford and are Lifegroup leaders there. Wynn has served as church treasurer and has been a member of Promise

Keepers – locally Azle Keepers of the Promise – for 19 years and is now a group leader here. Wynn helps with the annual Music in the Park festivities as a member of the Special Event Board for the Azle Parks and Recreation Department. Plus he’s a member of the Azle Optimist Club. In 2012, he completed the Azle Police Departments V.I.P.S./ C.O.P. (Volunteers in Police Ser-

vice/Citizens on Patrol). “This is a project I am interested in seeing grow and be of assistance in both administrative help and extra eyes for the city,” he noted. “I believe this program can truly be an asset to the police department and citizens of Azle.”

The late Lynn – the 2011 Citizen of the Year – started the Azle Promise Keepers group that Wynn is involved in. “My hope is to keep that ministry going to honor Jimmy and my Lord,” Wynn said. Wynn’s other inspiration, Shaffer, won this year’s Home Town Hero honor. Azle inspirations “His physical condition caused Wynn said two local men have by a stroke has not stopped his inspired him, Jimmy Lynn and testimony for his love of God Lew Shaffer. and telling others of God’s love,” Wynn said. He recalled that years ago, Lynn labeled Shaffer “the Azle Hugger.” Wynn said, “He hugs everybody he meets. I think I have it figured out: Since Jesus can’t physically give you a hug, he sent Lew.”

Personal travails When asked why he’s so involved in so many community activities, Wynn points to his major heart attack in November 2011. It took eight defibrillator shocks by first responders to get his heart restarted. He was taken to Azle’s hospital then flown away on a CareFlite helicopter to Fort Worth. At Harris Hospital, he spent two days in a hypothermiainducted coma. All told, Wynn spent 11 days in intensive care. Two weeks later, he was back home in Azle. Loving Azle and God Wynn is Azle’s biggest fan. “I love living in Azle and being a part of this community. This is such a giving and caring community.” He obtained his personal motto off an old sample t-shirt from his salesmen days: “Bloom Where You’re Planted.” With efforts to move to Weatherford thwarted, Wynn planted himself in Azle and the city has benefited greatly. He said, “Put God first in your life, your family second, others third, and yourself next. Trust in God; His plans and His timing are better than yours. I do not know what tomorrow holds, but I know Who holds tomorrow.” Wynn added that he was humbled and honored to be the Citizen of the Year. You can expect even more from him: “I like helping others so this is a natural place for me,” Wynn said.

long time, that he could count on one hand the number of patients that survived in my condition,” he said. The surgeon said he was alive by the grace of God. “But I already knew it,” Wynn said. That emergency engaged Wynn even further. “Every day is a gift from God. I want to live it to its fullest.” That meant getting involved in a slew of Azle activities.

‘Servant leader’ named 2013 Shooting Star BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Nate Simmons is one of those people who has the ability to juggle many things at once. Called a “servant leader who seeks to serve others and selflessly, quietly works to achieve what is in the best interest of others,” Simmons says he was surprised when he was given the Shooting Star Director’s Award by the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce at its annual banquet Thursday, Feb. 7. “It was not something I ever expected,” he said. The award expresses the Chamber’s grateful appreciation of Simmons’ loyalty, dedication, and time given to promote the Azle community. Simmons, vice president in lending at Pinnacle Bank in Azle, grew up in Cleburne and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance. “At the time, I didn’t really know I wanted to be a banker, but my family had a community banker I thought a lot of, so when I heard Pinnacle Bank in Cle-

burne was hiring, I applied for a job,” Simmons said. “I started as a teller and worked my way up.” That was in 2007. In 2009, Simmons transferred to the Azle branch and was later named an officer of the bank. Simmons and his wife, Jennifer, are expecting their first child any day, and they agree they want to raise their family in Azle. In fact, they’ve put their house up for sale, and as soon as it sells, they hope to move to Azle. “Azle is a place that has small town values, and we love the idea of living in a town where you can see the good in people every time you turn the corner,” Simmons said. “What’s so nice about Azle is all the people who help others – people like Dennis Wynn and Ray Ivey, for example. They don’t do it for the accolades, they do it because they enjoy it, and they see benefits in what they do other than recognition for themselves.” Simmons, besides working at Pinnacle Bank, serves the community in a variety of ways himself.

He is chairman of the Chamber’s Economic Development Committee and has served on the Planning and Execution Committee for its Christmas Parade for the last three years. He has also represented both the Chamber and the Azle Optimist Club on the Chamber’s Sting Fling committee. Simmons is a member of the Azle Rotary Club, a past president of the Azle Optimist Club, and was named its Optimist of the Year in 2009. He’s been active in community events like the Azle Lake Run, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and the Azle Angel Tree pro gram, and he was instrumental in raising money to support college scholarships of more than $15,000 and funding to assist the Community Caring Center Weekend Back Pack program. Recently, Simmons has also been key in coordinating sponsorships for and distribution of the My Favorite Book to Azle ISD and other area elementary schools. The book represents strong morals and Christian values which are

characteristic of Simmons. In addition to all that and more, Simmons and his wife also find time to serve as small group leaders in their church. Possessing the energy and op-

timism of his youth, Simmons is not daunted by all the hard work. “I look forward to whatever the future holds,” he said. “There’s a fun road ahead, that’s for sure.”

Huffman brings family values, work ethic to Azle BY CHASE CARTER When Polly Huffman and her husband Don moved to Azle in 1996, they didn’t think to bring their already well established business with them. Soon enough, though, neighbors and friends found out about the couple’s successful and reputable irrigation and landscaping business, offering to pay for their expert services. The house calls became so numerous that the Huffmans relented a year later, setting up an office in Azle. “At that point, we knew we had to join the Chamber of Commerce,” said Huffman, She reasoned that if they would be offering the people of Azle their business, she and her husband could donate their personal efforts, as well. Immediately, Huffman became very active with the chamber, joining committees, projects, and community efforts at every opportunity. From 2001 to the present she has served as an ambassador for the council, even filling the capacity of president. Currently, she holds the office of secretary. In 2005, she was named Chairman of the Board and led the Chamber of Commerce in all of its community efforts. Huffman has helped put together the Christmas Parade for six years, and sat numerous times on the committee that

spearheaded the Jumping Jack Jamboree, predecessor of the Sting Fling. When the chamber still hosted the After Five – Texas Style dinner and dance at A&M Gardens, Huffman combined her efforts with her fellow chamber members to put on an evening of food and fun. “The Chamber has been very kind and helpful to our business,” said Huffman. “Everyone who works or runs it are amazing people and I am glad to be their peer.” That community of helpful and loving people is what initially drew the Huffmans to Azle. That, and the lake helped convince her fisherman husband. Huffman Irrigation and Landscaping, where she serves as office manager for the Azle and Southlake branches, has assisted with numerous community projects over the years. “When Central Park was being built, we helped landscape and run irrigation for the city,” said Huffman. “Our church, Ash Creek Baptist, also received irrigation work. We continue to help them as our way to give back to the church.” She says she and husband Don are always there to help, and the Chamber knows they only need to call and the Huffmans will answer. She was admittedly more than a little surprised when awarded the Businesswoman of the Year award at the Chamber Awards

Dinner on Feb. 7. “I listened to the description, not really hearing what they were saying, but when Kim [Ware] finally said ‘she has three children and grandchildren’ I knew it was me,” said Huffman. “There are lots of other women in Azle who deserve this award, but I am honored to be recognized among all the others who won it before me,” she added.

Ware and her husband Mark, along with many other friends and chamber members had kept the secret so well that she never had a clue. Huffman appreciates the business Azle gives her family, and she claims to have never had such wonderful customers. Huffman Irrigation is family owned and operated, and they like to keep it that way.

Her business donates money to the Shrine Circus Organization in addition to the many efforts and projects in Azle. In 2010, Huffman Irrigation and Landscaping won the Business of the Year award from the Chamber of Commerce. Her husband Don and son Justin, who runs their SouthlakeGrapevine office, accepted the award.

National Bank of Texas is all about Azle BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Steve Parker is an Azle guy. So is his staff at the National Bank of Texas. Everyone seems to be involved in things other than banking, beginning with the president of the bank. Parker is the Azle Rotary Club president and an integral part of the Azle Educational Foundation, the hospital, and the Azle Chamber of Commerce boards. Even newcomers to the bank like Travis Miles are quick to become immersed in all things Azle. Miles, a loan officer, replaced retired Craig Doyle who, Parker said, was instrumental in “pulling this location together.” A Texas Tech grad, Miles is already a member of the Azle Optimist Club and is active in the formation of the 2013 Relay for Life cancer fundraiser. “He’s doing a great job for us,” Parker said. Other happy newcomers to the bank are teller Jane O’Hair, who replaced the retired Judy Foster, and teller Sarah Hicks. Having local people helping local folks is a key to National Bank’s success, Parker said. Azle is the focus for the bank and its members and the National Bank of Texas can boast of some experienced personnel. Parker said, “I started in Azle in 1989. And [assistant branch manager] Carissa [Widner] started when she was 17. [branch manager/vice president] Betty

[Anders] started in banking in Azle in 1991. “Pretty much all of us have spent years and years in banking. And all of our customers that we have known through the years mostly have come to us.” From its doublewide mobile home beginnings, the National Bank of Texas is now settled into a modern facility at 405 Commerce Street next to the Post Office. At the bank, customers can expect traditional services with hometown flair. “All banking loans – real estate, automobile, business – as well as all the deposit products” are available, Parker said. Customers concerned with the economy are cautious with their cash and are keeping it in local banks. “What we see is that we have a lot of customers that come to a bank like ours – and all the other banks – to put their money here because they’re worried about putting it anywhere else,” Parker said. “They want a stable environment which would be a bank like ours,” he added. The security of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insuring deposits up to $250,00 is comforting to customers. Parker said it’s important to him that he and his employees work in the community with the people who are their customers – hence their presence throughout town. Lobby hours for the bank are Monday-

Shadi Sutton After bouncing from Azle to Springtown to Houston and back, Shadi Sutton couldn’t be happier that her family settled in a place she calls home. The accounts representative for Azle’s Pinnacle Bank got her start with the company as a part-time teller while in college. According to Sutton, they “tricked her” into giving up nursing school to work at the bank in a full capacity position. After starting a family, she, her RE C I Aand T Iyoung husband, O N son moved to Meventually Houston for a time, but came back to North Texas.O N “I’ve lived in Azle for theTbiggest part of my life; this is where I want to stay,” she said. Now, Sutton’s customer service position lets her work face-to-face with Azle’s community, setting up new accounts and assisting business customers. She holds a spot on the bank’s Penny Pincher Relay 4 Life team, assists in setting up Sting Fling, and showcases at the high school’s Open House Night. Sutton was “shocked and thrilled” to receive her Friend of the Chamber award, but saw an ulterior motive behind it. “I know this is just their way of keeping me on Sting Fling for next

year,” Sutton joked. She is in charge of the Kid’s Area for the annual event, selecting prizes, gathering volunteers, and setting up booths. “I do whatever the Chamber asks of me, honestly. I am just glad to help,” said Sutton. She has three kids in the Azle school system, senior Lauren, sixth grader Caitlen, and first grader Chase. “I spend a lot of time and energy personally with the schools, but I am also pushing involvement and promotion professionally there,” said Sutton. She attends ribbon cuttings and the Hoover Elementary School Career Days, putting on a mock process of awarding salary and purchasing houses with the students. “I have checkbooks for them and a budget, and they count out their money with beans,” said Sutton. She hopes these demonstrations at the schools will teach children fiscal responsibility and a sense of money early in life. She thanks the Chamber of Commerce for the award and the bank for all the opportunities to be

New city facilities earn Beautification and Improvement Award BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN In December 2012, two departments in the City of Azle moved into new, modern facilities that made their former digs look dismal while making the city look...well...good. The City of Azle Fire Department and the city’s animal shelter are the recipients of the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Shining Star Award for Beautification and Improvement. From a shotgun-style building that did little justice to the animals it serves, the city’s animal shelter was upgraded with a large addition that included more office and kennel space, a special “cat room,” and even rooms where potential adoptive families can get to know an animal before taking it home. The much needed addition to the existing shelter cost $640,000 – much of that raised by the community and members of the Azle Animal Shelter Humane Association (AASHA). Gonzalez then went to work for Kraft for five years before making the decision to attend medical school at UT Southwestern in Dallas, where he graduated in 1998. He now practices Family Medicine and Sleep for Sleep

BY CHASE CARTER Health First Azle Family Practice has been offering professional care and aid to the community for years, and their success is due in part to the pair of experienced doctors at its helm. Kriss Myers, M.D. grew up in Longview, attending school there before heading to Stephen F. Austin State University for his undergraduate education. After earning a diploma there in 1983, Myers attended graduate school at University of Texas Medical School, where he completed studies in 1987. His Family Practice Residency was undertaken at JPS in Fort Worth in 1990. During this time, he practiced family medicine in Nocona, but moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in 1990 to start HealthFirst with several other doctors. In 1995, Myers became associated with Dr. James Savage in Azle, and still cares for some of his patients today. At that time, Myers moved to Azle from the Metroplex. In 2000, he opened the clinic where it stands today, and now employs two physicians, three nurse practitioners, and three physician assistants. Myers and his wife, Ronah,

of resistance after the initial enthusiasm wanes,” says Elizabeth Ransom, M.D., F.A.C.S., executive vice president and clinical leader of North Zone at Texas Health Resources. “Tools for Well-being can help make radical lifestyle changes more manageable – one day at a time – by emailing a Daily ChallengeTM, tracking progress, and connecting people to an online community for ideas and support.” Connecting North Texans Online tools are just one example of how Texas Health Resources is taking collaborative health care to a new level. Research about each community has created zones that inform strategic development to meet residents’ needs. “What we are doing is revolutionary and exciting,” Dr.

Ransom says. “As we work with physicians and other partners, our goal is to transition from a focus on traditional health care services that intervene once community members are sick to prevention and well-being. We are proud of the care our hospitals deliver, but as we work to keep people healthy, fewer members of our communities will need that level of care.” Closer to home, the Healthy Education and Lifestyles Program at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle offers assistance with chronic disease self-management as well as helps residents in the Azle and surrounding communities to make better nutrition choices. Chamber honors Hart’s heart for community BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Since 2000, Shannon Hart has done his part to make “Chicken E and sweet tea” a part of every day life around Azle. When he was named the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce’s Super Star Businessman of the Year Award Feb. 7, Hart said he was stunned.

already know that he is selling both Azle Chicken Express stores effective March 4. But that’s okay – he’s not leaving town. Hart will continue to live in Azle and to serve as a Trustee for the Azle Independent School District. He is also keeping the Chicken Express store in Springtown. “The biggest difference for me will be that I’ll drive 10 miles to work each day instead of three miles,” Hart said. Hart grew up in Mineral Wells and worked for Chicken Express franchisor Richard Stuart while he was in high school. He went on to coach girls’ basketball at the high school level – most recently in the town of Meadow in West Texas. But in 2000, when Hart had the opportunity to buy the Azle store opened by Stuart in 1991, he jumped. Hart and his wife, Vanessa, will continue to live in Azle and hope to be more active in the community than ever. Shannon Hart, right, the 2013 Super Star Award winner He also wants to assure folks for Businessman of the Year, receives the award from that he’s leaving the popular Azle ISD Superintendent Dr. Ray Lea. We had won business of the year once before, but never businessman.” Accepting the award, Hart announced for those who didn’t

“The new owner is a great guy and a devoted family man,” Hart said. “I don’t expect anything to change – I think both stores will continue to be everything people have come to expect.” “One of the biggest reasons for selling two of the three stores is to make it easier to control with just one location,” Hart said. “My kids are getting older, and I want to have more time to be involved in their activities, and it will also allow me to be more active in both the Springtown

and Azle communities, as well.” Hart has three children: Brad is a freshman at Azle High School; Chrystyne is in the sixth grade at Azle Elementary and Hailey is a fourth grader at Silver Creek Elementary. Hart said in closing he had a message to convey to his Azle customers, friends and business associates. “I just want them to kow how much we appreciate the privilege of serving this community for the last 12 years.”

Susie Hiles named Ambassador of the Year BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN From the drafting board, to the board room to the cleanup stage, Susie Hiles is one of Azle’s “movers and shakers.” So much so she’s been named Ambassador of the Year by the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce for the second time. Hiles, her husband, Mark, and daughters Shanda and Shelby moved to Azle in 1990, and it’s been “home” ever since. Both girls graduated from Azle schools, and the family has been members of Azle Christian Church since 1995. Hiles went to work for the Azle Police Department in December 1999 and now serves as administrative assistant to Azle City Manager Craig Lemin. “Susie is hard working, dependable, requires minimal supervision, always acts in the best interests of the city, is willing to take on any task or assignment, gets the job done regardless of how challenging or difficult and has been a major contributor in many of the successes the city has experienced over the past 10 years,” Lemin said of Hiles. In presenting Hiles with

the 2013 award that will complement the one she won in 2007, Ambassador Chair Karen Kidd said Hiles arrives early at monthly Ambassador meetings held at Azle Christian Church so she can unlock and set up the building – then she stays late to clean up. In addition to serving as a deacon, elder, and board chair at the church, Hiles currently serves as a Trustee, is active in Disciples Women’s Ministry at the local level, and has participated in numerous mission trips with the church. She’s participated in Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, and Good Neighbors. And yet, Hiles still finds time to spend with her two grandchildren, on whom she dotes. Hiles brings the same enthusiasm, professionalism and devotion to the Ambassadors, whose job it is to serve as public relations representatives for the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce, Kidd said. “She is a great neighbor, a caring and enjoyable person, and has a great sense of humor,” Kidd said. “Susie will do whatever you ask of her, and if

she observes a need, she acts on it.” “I don’t keep a score card, I just serve where I can,” Hiles said. “I have been very blessed in my life and it is my obligation to look for ways to repay those blessings.” “There is a saying I like that sums up my philosophy on service,” she continued. “Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time.” ~ Marian Wright Edelman “I am very honored that my fellow Ambassadors chose me as Ambassador of the Year, but I don’t really feel my service went above and beyond any of the other Ambassadors,” Hiles said. 2013 Ambassador of the Year, Susie Hiles, right, receives the “This is a great group of award from Ambassador chair Karen Kidd. Photo by Chase Carter hardworking people that care very much about Azle. – many of them are members the benefit of this community. Their service to this community of other service groups and They are all truly Ambassadors extends beyond the Chamber organizations that work towards for the Azle area.”

James Wood Auto focuses on the future, customers BY CHASE CARTER

“When you come in to buy a car from us, we focus on your future, not your past,” said James Wood Neighborhood Auto manager Larry Burkhalter. The company sticks to this mantra in order to provide the citizens of Azle who may have “hiccups, glitches, or mistakes” in their credit history a chance to purchase a preowned vehicle. The Azle location opened five years ago, but Burkhalter has been with the community for more than 15 years. He was moved out to get this location off the ground, but his bosses decided to keep him there after its early success. With anywhere between 60 to 70 vehicles on their lot at any one

time, James Wood offers selection along with their affordability. “Between our nine locations are 900 vehicles you can choose from,” said Burkhalter. “If we don’t have the car you want, just tell us what you prefer and we can get it here for you.” The company is a buy here, pay here establishment, but also offers financing. They also work with customers to set up a payment option that fits each individual, whether that be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. “We help those with credit individuals start to rebuild,” said Burkhalter. “And with our 72 hour ‘love it or leave it’ policy, there’s no way you can’t be satisfied driving out of here.”

James Wood Neighborhood Autos stands behind their vehicles, and everyone goes through their main office in Denton for a full round of checks and repair and maintenance before going on sell at the Azle location. Their website has information on all vehicles available for purchase, including Carfax information and locations. The company recently

purchased the property behind their current office, and plans for expansion are in the works. “As soon as everything is approved, we’ll begin building a whole new complex of office, shop and detail center,” said Burkhalter. “The buildings we use now will be torn down to make room for even more vehicles and improved road access.”

A member of the Chamber of Commerce since they opened, James Wood also sponsors several AISD sports teams, including football and basketball. Another slogan at James Wood Neighborhood Autos is “treat people like you would your family”, and customers can expect nothing less when they come in.
