Annual Christmas event a Springtown tradition For years, thousands of Springtown residents have migrated downtown every December for Christmas on the Square. This year’s festive holiday gathering is set for Saturday, Dec. 14 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. There’s a ton of things to do around the Square. Shoppers seeking unique gifts have come to the right place. Scores of vendors will be sprinkled around the Square offering everything from candles and jewelry to a slew of other handmade goods like toys, stockings, ornaments, plush animals, critter clothing, spices, leather goods, cookbooks, glass mosaics, and ceramics. Kids will find plenty of activities scattered around the Square. And if you work up a hunger while investigating the large variety of options, you can find plenty to eat. As usual, a bevy of Christmas performances are planned throughout the day. A concluding festival highlight is the announcement of Bonus Bucks winners at 5 p.m. That’s when seven lucky folks – who are over 18 and present at the drawing – will receive cash that can be spent locally until Feb. 28, 2014. The luckiest person will receive $300 in Bonus Bucks. One will get $200 and five people will be presented with $100.

Bonus Bucks are back for holiday season by Natalie GeNtry The Springtown Chamber of Commerce will soon begin its 20th Annual Bonus Bucks campaign, as part of the Christmas on the Square event. Anyone can register at any of numerous participating merchants (see ad in this publication for a list). Then at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, during Christmas On The Square, a drawing will be held to determine the winners. One $300 winner, one $200 winner, and five $100 winners will be awarded those amounts in Bonus Bucks. The “funny money” may then be redeemed for merchandise at any of the participating merchants. It’s just another way to encourage people to “Shop Springtown First,” and Springtown businesses have enjoyed its success for almost 20 years. Longtime chamber director Judy Smerud, who passed away in 2005, came up with the idea to help promote shopping in Springtown during the Christmas season. The notion of awarding money drew a lot of interest, but there was no way to guarantee that money would be spent at Springtown area businesses. So the concept of a “Bonus Buck” was born. This year, more than 45 Springtown area businesses are involved in the program –
including some in Azle which are also chamber members. Some businesses host Bonus Bucks boxes which allow shoppers to register for the program. Others simply make a donation to a worthy cause. Chamber President Amy
Walker said the $25 investment for businesses to participate in the program is well worth it. “Most of the time businesses more than get their money back from shoppers who come in to register and then stay to buy something else,” she said. “We have no problem selling the idea
to businesses.” The drawing will take place at 5 p.m. under the Springtown Tabernacle. “The program helps promote shopping in Springtown,” Walker said. “It works.” Winners must be present to win.
Those lucky people have through Feb, 2014 to use the Bonus Bucks at participating locations to purchase gifts, pay bills, or buy services just like with cash. For additional information, call the Chamber office at 817220-7828.

NtN sponsors Santa letters, Christmas dinners by carla noah stutsman Every child loves to write a letter to Santa at Christmastime, and once again this year, Santa’s helpers will be in Springtown to collect letters and take them directly to St. Nick. Neighbor to Neighbors (NtN) Food Pantry will sponsor Santa letters again this year. Letters may be dropped off in the big white mailbox by the Santa Sled in the Springtown Square, where Santa’s helpers will pick them up and deliver them to Saint Nick. Santa Claus will respond to every letter personally. Remember to put your return address on every letter so his response will reach you. Santa Claus himself will be in Springtown Dec. 14 from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. He will be available for pictures in the Santa Sled on the Square. There is no charge for photos or to see Santa, so bring your
children and pets and be sure to bring your own camera or cell phone to take your own photos. Donations, of course, are always welcome. Cash, clothing, turkeys and hams are most appreciated this time of year. Do not donate mattresses or couches – NtN cannot legally accept them and, in fact, has to pay to dispose of them. NtN distributes, on average, 1,200 pounds of food each of three weeks it’s open per month. That translates to 3.600 pounds of food per month or 43,200 pounds of food per year. Because they are able to buy food at a discounted per-pound rate, cash donations are most effective in helping the needy in the Springtown area. This year NtN will provide Christmas dinner baskets to about 400 families in the Springtown area from 8 a.m.noon Saturday, Dec. 21.

Tree lighting tips Lighting a Christmas tree may seem like child’s play, but time and again people struggle with the task. Untangling wires and wrapping them around boughs can be nerve wracking, but lighting a tree doesn’t have to be a chore when you follow some tips from the professionals. First, keep in mind that wrapping lights around the tree horizontally is more work and often doesn’t produce a multi-dimensional effect. Rather, string the lights from the trunk up to the top, working vertically. This is actually how the tree decorators at Rockefeller Center in New York City do the famous tree year after year. This method helps eliminate tangled wires and empty spots. Remember to plug in the strands of lights before you begin to check for burnt-out bulbs and to adjust the spacing of lights to prevent dark spots. Think about varying light bulb sizes to add more dimension. String an inner layer of small LED white lights to produce an inner glow on the tree before adding larger, colored lights on top to increase visual appeal. Just be sure to match the same wattage of the lights so that you do not have power surges and can prolong the life of the bulbs.

There’s more holiday cheer coming soon By Natalie GeNtry As Christmas approaches, Springtown churches are finalizing their celebratory events. First Baptist Church will once again host their Celebrate Christmas presentation Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. and again the next day at the same time. The show features the FBC Celebration Choir and orchestra, with the KidZone The entire story of Jesus, from birth through resurrection, will be told through music and drama. This year, the church will feature four members playing the part of the four New Testament gospel writers with Jerry Hoover as Matthew, Keith Springfield as Mark, Al Garrett as Luke, Lambert Geerlings as John. As these four characters talk to each other and to the audience, they will tell what they remember about the story of Jesus that happened over 2000 years ago. Agnes Independent Baptist will be hosting award-winning vocalist Alan Harris. He will be featured in a special community event Dec. 15. A music-filled sermon will begin at 11a.m. with a full concert scheduled for 6:30 that evening. Harris presents a “blended worship” style that appeals to young and old alike. He has toured nationally with many of the Gaither Home-
coming artists and was recently honored with a Diamond Award nomination for Male Vocalist of the Year. Then on Dec. 22 Agnes Baptist will hold their outreach service entitled “Christmas Begins with Christ” at 11a.m. Members of the Grace Baptist congregation will perform their Christmas play How Mr. Sodd Found Christmas on Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m.
The play is loosely based on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol set in modern times. A week later on Dec. 22, the church choir will hold its Christmas concert at 6:30 p.m. Hilltop Family Church invites everyone to their special Christmas service on Dec. 22 at 10:45 a.m. All of the events are open to the public.
