Springtown Chamber honors city’s finest John Conway remembered for his many contributions BY NATALIE GENTRY Springtown High School (SHS) was abuzz Saturday night, March 28, as members of the business community gathered to celebrate 2014's outstanding citizens, organizations, and businesses. The SHS Jazz Band – directed by Scott McPhetridge – provided the musical entertainment with a collection of soulful tunes. McPhetridge also led the assembly with a traditional solo trumpet rendition of the National Anthem. For the second year in a row, Blake May was named the chamber’s Ambassador of the Year. The next honor presented that evening was the Hometown Heroes award. This year’s honoree was Pastor Johnnie Conway in recognition of his dedication to church, chamber, and community. Oh baby! BY NATALIE GENTRY The Springtown Police Department received a 911 call regarding a 2-yearold boy in the middle of the intersection of North Main (FM 51) and 5th Street at 4:54 a.m. on Sunday, March 29. According to Chief of Police Ed Crowdis, the passerby was able to get the toddler out of the road and made the call. Sgt. Curtis Hamlin responded and took custody of the child after they were unable to locate where he came from. Although there were no visible inju-
ries on the child, Hamlin called paramedics to the scene as a precaution, according to the incident report. He then took the boy to the police station. “We’re not exactly sure how long the child had been out of the house,” Crowdis, said. Hamlin noted in his report that while support staff cared for the child at the station, he, volunteers from the Springtown Fire Department, and a medic from Lifecare drove through the neighborhoods with emergency lights on for approximately 30 minutes. “[We] even had sirens going at one point trying to get the attention of

Toddler rescued from busy intersection, but no charges filed anyone who might not have been on the roadway but was out looking for a child,” he noted. “I had dispatch contact Child Protective Services (CPS) while I watched the child,” Hamlin said in the report. “I [also] notified my chain of command and had dispatch send out a three-region teletype in case anyone was working a case where a small child might be missing.” The child’s mother – who lives in Lake Worth – arrived at the police station at approximately 10 a.m. According to the report she stated she had left the child with a friend

who lived in the 500 block of Dogwood around 9:30 p.m. the day before and was notified at about 8:30 a.m. that the toddler was gone. The child had travel approximately a quarter of a mile. “[The child’s mother] stated she and [her friend] searched the residence and the surrounding neighborhood before coming to the police department,” Hamlin said in the report. Crowdis said the babysitter wasn’t sure how the child was able to get out of the house. According to the report, the child’s mother stated that the children were
staying the night away from home to give her time to clean their house before a CPS visit Monday afternoon for separate accusations. Hamlin “informed [the mother] due to the danger the child had been in, I felt the need for CPS to determine if the child should be removed from her or released to her.” Hamlin required that the mother and child stay at the station until CPS arrived and decided what course of action was best for the child. A later call from the Springtown police confirmed that CPS released the children back to its mother.

Water, water everywhere City Council considers water oriented issues BY NATALIE GENTRY The Springtown City Council waded into new territory this month with several wateroriented discussions and decisions.
Groundwater Doug Shaw, general manager for the Upper Trinity Groundwater Conservation District (UTGCD), addressed the council about the possibility of amending the city’s contract with the organization. “We have a contract with the city that states basically we monitor the city’s Hilltop Drive well,” Shaw said. This well is located at 253 Hilltop drive, behind Auto Zone. “This well is one of 200 with in the four-county district that we monitor,” Shaw said. “We recently ordered 16 data loggers that we plan to install in wells so we can collect daily readings of the water levels.” Shaw said the current monitoring system should be updated. “It’s great to have quarterly readings, but sometimes a lot Fourth generation circus happens between readings, esperformer Jonathan Mo- pecially in some of the shalrales defies gravity. lower wells,” he continued. Photo by Natalie Gentry Shaw noted that the amend-
ment to the contract would allow the UTGCD to monitor the groundwater level in the aquifer via the Hilltop Drive well with one of these data loggers. “Basically, a small probe will be placed in the well to collect the information,” Shaw said. “We’ll come by periodically, plug into it with a USB connection, and download the information.” The data will then be uploaded to the UTGCD’s website for anyone to see. “We are working with the state and water development board to eventually have real-time satellite access to the wells,” Shaw said. “This connection would make the information available on the website and anyone in town would be able to click on that well and see what the level is in real time.” City Administrator Doug Hughes noted that this information would be helpful as the city explores alternative water resources due to the current drought. “We could possibly use the service to help determine an appropriate location for an additional well if that is the route we chose to pursue,” Hughes said.
Shaw said that the UTGCD is always looking for wells to monitor in order to get the big picture of any downward trends that may be occurring, especially in the more shallow wells. “It’s important to pay attention to what the groundwater level is doing – especially for people who live outside of the city,” Shaw said. “We like to have a combination of domestic and public wells because they are in different formations.” The council voted unanimously to approve the contract amendment.

Drought concerns In addition to any underground water supplies, the council considered having a water intake study completed due to the drought and resulting low water level in Eagle Mountain Lake. This study would be the first step in deciding how the city should proceed as water levels in the lake continue to drop. In essence, this phase would consist of system inventory and analysis from the intakes below the water’s surface in Eagle Mountain Lake to the city’s water plant.
The estimated time this phase would take to complete is two months and the estimated cost is $17,200. At the conclusion of phase one, the engineers would provide proposals – ideally about three options – for ways to continue to get water from the Eagle Mountain Lake should the drought worsen and the water levels continue to drop. The estimated cost for phase two is $24,300 and it would take two to three months. Hughes noted that the projected Eagle Mountain Lake
low mark for this September coincidences with the levels during the drought of 1953. This drought – which lasted about seven years – is considered the drought of record for North Texas. The current drought is entering its fifth year. Council members noted that with the current and projected conditions, phase one should be considered. They tasked Hughes with checking qualifications of several engineering firms for the study.

of the community is invaluable and we cannot be more thankful for the tremendous amount of support that we receive.” In addition, Grant said she hopes to see people from the community at the Parker County Livestock Show slated for June 8-13. “It’s a great family event that highlights agriculture in Parker County,” she said.

Cyberbullying comes to Springtown ISD halls Superintendent says district on top of it By Natalie Gentry Cyberbullying has made headlines across the country recently. From 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick in Florida, to stars like Ashley Judd, everyone has become a potential target for anonymous online bullies. A Springtown freshman experienced the digital harassment Monday, March 23 when an Instagram page was created stating that she “needed to die.” The author of the page stated that the girl needed to kill herself, and that they hoped that when she saw the page, she would cut herself. In addition to the demeaning comments and profanity,
the bully attacked the student’s character and family. The student’s mother went to Springtown High School that day as well as to the police department and sheriff’s office; however, policies and procedures in place both within the school district and according to law make the process a slow one. Springtown Independent School District Superintendent, Mike Kelley noted that confidentiality is key. “Throughout our investigation into the matter, we will continue to maintain high levels of confidentiality for our students in hopes of preventing further gossip from spreading,” Kelley said. “Our

Parker County tax abatement brings millions but Springtown ISD gets zero out of the deal Several taxing entities will share millions of dollars in new tax revenue resulting from an economic development agreement in Parker County, but so far it appears the Springtown Independent School District won’t get a penny. Big money Parker County Commissioners voted unanimously March 24 to approve an agreement – touted as the first tax abatement ever done by the county – with Trinidad Drilling LP, which will render drilling equipment valued between $200-225 million in the county to be taxed. According to Precinct One

Location, location, location Trinidad Drilling LP’s property is located in the 4900 block of E. Highway 199 about four miles northwest of Azle, and about five-and-a-half miles southeast of Springtown. Although the commissioners – especially Conley – had high hopes the Trinidad deal would benefit the Springtown Independent School District as well as the AISD, it doesn’t currently appear that will be the case.
ments and tax abatements can benefit Parker County residents, and he’s already working on some new possibilities. “This is going to open the door for others, and I look to see some similar things coming in. I really hope to do more like this in the Springtown and Azle areas,” Conley said, admitting he’s already working on something west of Springtown. “Even though Parker County has agreed to refund half the revenue the Trinidad deal generates, it leaves us with about $400,000 that may keep us from having to raise the tax rate Maybe next time But Conley believes similar or at least raise it only minieconomic development agree- mally.” That’s because Trinidad’s property – although it has an address that reflects that it is located in Springtown – literally straddles the line separating the two school districts, with only a portion of the driveway sitting within the SISD, Conley said. Ironically, only a portion of the Azle ISD lies within Parker County; most of its territory is in Tarrant County, with a sliver in Wise County. The majority of Springtown ISD is located in Parker County, although it also contains some Wise County territory.

SEF scholarship selection process has April 10 cutoff The Springtown Education Foundation (SEF) will be selecting scholarship recipients during their regular April board meeting later this month. SHS seniors have until April 10 for applications to be turned in at the school counselors’ office. Some organizations have designated an April 1 deadline. SEF endows scholarships to SHS graduating seniors each May following a year of fundraisers and perpetual endowments from local businesses, organizations, and individuals. “Springtown is fortunate to have a large group of citizens dedicated to furthering the education of local students,” said Tootie Hall, SEF President. “We have a very education minded civic and organization group in our area. “We have inquiries each year for new scholarship endowments from families who wish to fund memorial scholarships for loved ones, organizations who utilize the SEF scholarship committee to select recipients for their groups, individuals who wish to celebrate family mem-
ber achievements by donating funds to SEF scholarships, and businesses that further support our graduating seniors with funding,” she continued. “Anyone who wishes to fund a scholarship through SEF may do so and receive acknowledgment for their tax-exempt contribution, all said.” Founded in 1992, SEF has funded in excess of $260,000 in scholarships for college-bound graduates. And available for the first time this year, the Foundation will also offer scholarships for students wishing to attend vocational or technical institutions. “Not all graduates want to attend a four-year college,” Hall said. “We haven’t always addressed those that wish to attend alternative education opportunities. This year we’re excited to expand our outreach for those graduates.” SEF awarded in excess of $40,000 in scholarship funding in 2014. For more information about establishing a scholarship or donating to SEF contact Tootie Hall at 817-7892008.

It’s alarming! Firefighters receive detector donations, devices free to any who need one By Natalie Gentry The Parker County Emergency Services District 1 (ESD1) received a boost to its stock of smoke detectors after a recent donation from Higginbotham Brothers True Value. The Springtown hardware store gave firefighters several smoke detectors to help supplement the department’s existing program that offers the devices for free to residents who can’t afford to buy or replace them.
The ESD’s program began after fire personnel found that many homes didn’t have smoke detectors or they had them but they weren’t working. According to Deputy Chief Mike Ellis, many such households were occupied by elderly people, which is a concern for the ESD. The smoke detectors are available at any of the ESD’s stations. For more information, call the ESD at (817) 523-7598.

outside the home and followed them to a neighbor’s house where the suspect had been visiting the previous evening. After speaking to the residents of that home, deputies determined the identity and location of Andrade who was discovered asleep in a relative’s house about a mile from the victim’s home. When deputies woke Andrade, they discovered he had been sleeping on top of one of the stolen cell phones – a fact that provided probable cause. After obtaining a search warrant, investigators discovered two pairs of child’s panties rolled inside a pair of Andrade’s blue jeans that were later identified by the victim’s mother as the girl’s. According to Assistant District Attorney Jeff Swain, An-

drade will not be eligible for parole until the year 2037. “After that point, his release would be up to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, which could choose to grant him early release or keep him for the remainder of his sentence,” Swain said. Andrade also faces federal probation violation charges for illegally re-entering the country after deportation in 2011. “That sentence could run concurrently or consecutively with our charge, at the discretion of the federal judge. He also faces deportation once he is released,” Swain said. “Though Mr. Andrade will be required under Texas law to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, I don’t really see how that is going to happen since he will be returned to Mexico sometime around the middle of this century.”
SISD cancels May elections The Springtown Independent School District (SISD) school board voted unanimously to cancel its regular election May 9 during the March 30 board meeting. Because both candidates
for the positions are unopposed, they will be declared elected, effective the date of the general elections. Those candidates are Larry Don Carter in Place 6 and Al Garret for Place 7.
Madison Beckwith, a Springtown High School sophomore, reads her essay “Optimism is a Priority” to Optimist Club members. Her missive was deemed the best of all entries received by the Springtown Optimist committee and Beckwith’s essay was advanced to the regional competition. A win there is worth a $2,500 scholarship.

Obituaries Robert (Bob) Lee Bryant 1942-2015
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a loving husband and father, Robert (Bob) Lee Bryant. Private funeral service and interment will be held at Shiloh Baptist Cemetery in Texarkana, Arkansas Bob was born November 18, 1942 in Texarkana, Arkansas to Robert Frances Bryant and Bertie Lee Stice Bryant Philley. He lived in many places in Texas during his lifetime. He spent his early childhood in Hamlin, Texas. He spent his school years in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High School in 1960. He married the love of his life, Mary Ann Harless Bryant from Ponca City, Oklahoma on November 18, 1961. They had a great time travelling with what was then Western Electric Company. Bob gained knowledge of the telephone business and some lifelong friends through these adventures of being on ‘transfer’ in Texas cities such as Corpus Christi, Houston and Pampa. Their daughter, Ramona Loleta, was born in Abilene in 1965, and a couple of years later, September 18, 1967 to be exact, Michael Martin was born in Abilene also. But, soon thereafter, they moved to Burkburnett where Bob and his family became involved in small town life. They lived on Preston RD where (Michael) Martin was known for regularly visiting the neighbors in his birthday suit while Ramona ran to Mary Ann to tattle on him. The Bryant family grieved immensely when Martin died from meningitis on September 18, 1969. Bob is surely hugging his son in heaven today! Later they moved to Easy St to try to move on with life without Martin. JanLee Baptist Church, Johnnie Yates and the Masonic Lodge in Burkburnett where he earned the 32nd degree, were important influences in Bob’s life. He was known to all he knew as a man of intelligence, integrity and fairness. The family made many good friends in Burkburnett and in Wichita
Falls where Bob worked. In 1977 Bob moved his family to Hurst, Texas where he remained working at AT&T for 38 years. During those years, he was involved in North Richland Hills Baptist Church and even though he couldn’t sing a note, he spent many hours helping the choir with the ‘Christmas Pageant’ and anything else the church asked of him. When Bob retired, he and Mary Ann had been sponsoring a foreign exchange student, Fabio Hatori, while living in Springtown. If asked, they would tell you they love Fabio as one of their own kids. But even with this, Bob wasn’t really ready to retire from working. He went to work for Marconi who then became Emerson. The funny part of this transition in life is that he was now the expert (and almost indispensible) auditor that AT&T, his former employer, depended on to ensure the central office wiring got installed correctly! Since he travelled so much with this job, Bob and Mary Ann decided to live part of their retirement dream before time slipped away. They bought 40 acres in East Texas and built their ‘forever’ home. For a few years, Bob was a cattleman with a herd of 8 cows and one bull named Black Tres, or as son-in-law Patrick Passmore called him ‘Sir Loin’. They have a lake behind the house for fishing and Bob loved to fish! He taught his granddaughters, Rachel Ann and Rylie Loleta Passmore, how to fish and how to drive golf carts all over the property. Bob enjoyed sitting at the ‘Table of Knowledge’ in the mornings at ‘The Shed Cafe’ in Edom, TX near where they lived. As Bob grew older, it was evident to his family that he missed his calling. He should have been a weatherman. Any time a storm was brewing, his daughter could expect a call from her dad letting her know of impending danger. Speculation between family members is that his grand dad, Otto M. Stice, impressed upon a young Bob, the importance of the weather to the Stice farm where Bob was raised so early in his life. He went to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday , March 18, 2015. At the time of his death, he lived in Van Zandt County, Texas near Ben Wheeler, Texas. So many are welcoming Bob to the golden streets of heaven while those of us remain here to do the work
our Lord has for us. Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Harless Bryant of Ben Wheeler area, Van Zandt County, Texas; daughter, Ramona Loleta Bryant Passmore, son-in-law, Patrick Earl Passmore; granddaughters, Rachel Ann and Rylie Loleta Passmore of Hurst; his sister, Diana Francis Bryant Patterson
of Colbert, Oklahoma and her children, Shannon Lee Bryant of Lubbock, Texas and Vi’ Lynda Cherese Patterson Hancock of Colbert, Oklahoma and their children. Online registration @ www. texarkanafuneralhome.com.

According to Mary Beckworth, RES gifted and talented/ dyslexia teacher and Flight Crew sponsor, the Reno Flight Crew – a student leadership group – along with the parent liaison, Mistie Rivera, worked to make the day a success. It’s enough to make you weep – no kidding
O
n the radio the other day, a macho guy confessed to tearing up every time he heard a certain song. His workmates could not guess what song could possibly make the bad boy weep. It was “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston from the movie The Bodyguard. Which made everyone else on the radio show burst into laughter. He said he couldn’t stop the tears because it reminded him of the scene where Houston runs into Kevin Costner’s arms as the ballad is belted out. Later, another guy admitted to welling up when he heard the opening to the theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark. He was immediately catapulted back to his youth when he had lined up again and again to watch the action-packed movie with his buddies.
Everyone has songs that bring waves of nostalgia. When I was a firefighter, we went crazy for two songs every time they came on MTV. (Clearly, this was many years ago.) One, we burly studs pranced around to “Ice, Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice. (Yes, that song’s a punch line now, but, holy cow, it took over the world for a while there in 1990.) Two, had we been spied, the task force might’ve lost some of its studly cred when we were found high-pitching in unison to “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinead O’Connor. Not all fire department nostalgia songs are happy. The first time I heard Garth Brooks’ “The Dance” was at the funeral of a beloved captain who had died on a fireground. I still can’t listen to that song today, decades later. Everybody can trace their lives
through songs. Me: • “Hush” by Deep Purple – first 45 I ever bought • “Back in the U.S.S.R.” by the Beatles – first song on the “White Album” I wanted ON YOUR for Christmas as a 12 year MARK old or I would Mark K. Campbell die! • “The Joker” by Steve Miller – bought it on my high school senior trip to Houston • “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” by Elton John – the first song I danced to at the University of Texas’ “Welcome Freshmen” dance in
the dorm cafeteria in the fall of 1974 • “London Homesick Blues” by Jerry Jeff Walker – played at college over and over when “redneck rock” was on the rise in Austin • “Colour My World” by Chicago – our wedding song • “Waiting for the End of the World” by Elvis Costello – heard almost constantly on the 8-track player going to and from softball games • “Wheel in the Sky” by Journey – the song that woke the Bride and me up for work every morning for months in 1978 • “We Will Rock You” by Queen – young daughter booty shakin’ while holding onto speakers bigger than her is something you don’t forget And all these songs just get me up to age 24. These tunes are pleasant memories, but none make me tear up. However, I
recently attended an event with a song that did. It was the Fort Worth symphony – that sounds hoity-toity, but it was Irish music for a common man’s St. Patrick’s Day program that included some brightly colored young ladies’ fancy reeling footwork. Anyway, before the festivities, the conductor turned and instructed the audience to stand. Then, with full symphonics, hundreds of patrons all sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Young and old, every nationality – everyone sang. Together. My soul leapt and I could barely finish as my eyes filled up. It was so stirring! I can’t remember not knowing our national anthem. It’s the most nostalgic song I know. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor, and he can get misty at “Texas Our Texas” too.

Letter to the Editor School voucher idea a bad one Dear Editor, Two of the latest fiascoes discussed in the Texas Legislature were two education bills, one for school vouchers and one to create a nonprofit to which business, for a tax credit, could donate money to help families afford to send their children to private schools with qualifying families having possible annual incomes of up to $80,000. One argument for school vouchers was that tax dollars sent to the public school system are not always efficiently spent. Another was that giving
taxpayer subsidies (vouchers) to parents would encourage public schools to improve or risk losing funding fostering educational competition. But even some Republicans worried about a lack of accountability of private schools which don’t have to meet the same academic standards as public schools, plus vouchers for private school tuition would drain funds from public schools. Also of concern was that state funding might allow “government overreach” into private schools. All of those arguments against vouchers seem to make sense. The second bill was downplayed by one Democratic Senator who was quoted as saying, “I don’t know too many ‘have-nots’ who come from
families that make $80,000 a year.” The most powerful opponent of school vouchers was Kyle Henderson, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Athens who had this to say about the subject, “In the beginning, temptation appeared as a fruit. Today, it appears in the shape of vouchers. As tempting as it may be for private, religious schools to pluck the low hanging fruit of ‘free’ public money, the cost is too great.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my tax dollars going to private schools; public schools are too drastically underfunded as it is. Keep vouchers out of public education! Judy B. Beeman Weatherford

ishop August Gottlieb Spangenburg, who was exploring the Western Piedmont in search of a suitable location for a Moravian settlement, wrote this of the area in1752 when he reached the Catawba River west of Statesville: “Hitherto we have been on the Trading Path, where we could find at least one house a day where food could be bought, but from here we turn into the pathless forest.” The second Sherrill home, built about 1752, was still standing 200 years later, and, was described in an article in the July 17, 1952 edition of The Record: “The front door of the house is quite wide. There are two small woodenpaneled doors. These doors are hand-
twins mentioned above, including the stonework in the foundation. The house was supported by huge timbers left exposed in the cellar. All roof beams HISTORICAL were of solid HIGHLIGHTS wood. Sturdiness was Laurie Moseley not the only thought of the pioneers – some of the walls of the house were adorned with thirty-inchhigh wainscoting with a design either painted or burned into the wood. Molding on the sides of stairways
was hand carved from one large piece of wood. “Adam Sherrill seemed content to remain a quiet farmer and family man. There is no record of his taking any major part in the business of the community that grew up in the area he settled, but his role as the first brave settler in Catawba County territory certainly places him among the most highly honored men.” Adam Sherrill wrote his will on March 5, 1772. His will quoted: “In the name of God, Amen. I, ADAM SHERRILL of the County of Rowan and the province of North Carolina being in perfect health and memory, praised be God, do make this my last will and testament. The rooms of the first floor, a kitchen, a living room, and a parlor, all with ten-foot-high ceilings, were constructed mostly of smooth hand-pegged boards. House, Senate primary task: adopting budget
T
he House Appropriations Committee on March 24 unanimously approved the General Appropriations Act (House Bill 1) — the first hurdle toward passing a state budget for fiscal years 2016 and 2017. The committee’s chair, state Rep. John Otto, R-Dayton, and the 27-member committee’s work earned the praise of House Speaker Joe Straus, who said HB 1 is “a responsible, disciplined plan that sets the right priorities for a growing state. It addresses education and transportation, it increases transparency and it will allow the House to provide meaningful tax relief.” HB 1 awaits consideration by the full House and a long list of proposed amendments to it will be debated on the House floor in the coming days. SB 2, the Senate version of
the state budget, is still under construction in the Senate Finance Committee. Differences in SB 2 and HB 1 must be reconciled by the two bodies in order to become enrolled as law. Comptroller Glenn Hegar’s biennial revenue estimate for fiscal years 2016 and 2017 suggests $113 billion in state funds will be available for general purpose spending. Lawmakers’ promises of fiscal conservatism suggest a finished state budget well under the available amount. Senate passes tax-cut bills Senate Bill 1 and Senate Joint Resolution 1 were passed by the Senate last week and have moved to the House for consideration. The bills, by Senate Finance Chair Jane Nelson, RFlower Mound, seek to tie the homestead exemption to home prices and allow homeowners to write off 25 percent of the average home price in Texas in

HIGHLIGHTS yBecause Ed Sterling t h i s change in the law will require an amendment to the state constitution, voters will get a chance to decide on this issue in September, according to Senate documents. Two other Senate bills seek to reduce the franchise tax. Nelson’s SB 7 reduces the overall rate by 15 percent and cuts the ‘EZ Rate’ used by busi-
nesses that make less than $20 million, by 40 percent. SB 8 by Sen. Charles Schwertner, R-Georgetown, would exempt businesses that make less than $4 million in annual revenue from the franchise levy. Currently, only businesses with less than $1 million in revenue are exempt. More than 60,000 small businesses would no longer have to pay the franchise tax if SB 8 becomes law. House passes cell phone bill On a vote of 104-39, the House on March 26 passed legislation regulating the use of a portable wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle. Committee Substitute House Bill 80 sets a fine of at least $25 and not more than $99 for the misdemeanor offense involving the operation of a vehicle by a person under 18 years of age while using a wireless communication device or the opera-

The bill enhances the punishment for such offense to a fine of at least $100 and not more than $200 for a previous conviction of an offense relating to the operation of a vehicle by a person under 18 years of age. One of the bill’s many effects is a requirement that the Department of Public Safety include in driver’s license examinations a test of the applicant’s knowledge of the effect of using a wireless communication device or engaging in other actions that may distract a driver.

Stephenville knocks Springtown out of playoffs Seasons deemed successes with improved records by mark k. campbell The Springtown High School soccer teams tumbled in bi-district and both boys and girls seasons ended March 26 at Weatherford against Stephenville. The boys led their Yellow Jacket counterparts at halftime, 1-0, but eventually fell 3-1. The Lady Porcupines lost 6-0. Coach Trent Davis had nothing but praise for the squads. “It’s never fun to lose – especially if it ends the season. But I want to take this season and use it as a stepping stone for the future of the program,” he said.
Davis thanked his seniors for their “leadership and dedication. You all left the soccer program better than you found it. For that, I commend you.” The coach encouraged returning players to be ready to “get to work.” Like all sports, a variety of workouts are necessary to advance deeper in postseason: running, weight work, ball skills, and even just playing the sport through the summer. Davis reiterated his motto: A.C.T. – Action Changes Things. “They certainly did this year,” he noted.

Springfield top Austin hurdler Senior wins 110 at Texas Relays by mark k. campbell Attending the prestigious Texas Relay on the University of Texas Austin campus is a thrill in itself. Winning an event is likely a precursor to punching a ticket to returning to the same Mike A. Myers oval a few weeks later. And that’s where super hurdler Dillon Springfield will likely end up when the state meet runs May 14-16. Springfield – who raced in the 110-meter hurdles in 2014 at state and finished fourth – won the event this year. After a time of 14.64 seconds placed him third in the prelims, the Porcupine blew the field away in the finals with a scorching time of 14.24. That was .22 seconds faster than the runner-up. Coach Brad Legan said that 14.24 was a personal best for Springfield. The senior also ran with teammates since all three relay squads raced in Austin, too. Legan said, “It was good for the kids to compete in that type Senior Porcupine Dillon Springfield smoked the field in Austin, winning the 110-meter race by a substantial margin. Photo by Mark K. The mile relay – 1600 meters – team of Mateo Herrera, Ricardo Reynoso, Mykeal Cummings, and Springfield turned in the top SHS relay effort. Springtown finished 15th in 3:31.76 as 39 teams raced. The 4x200 team was timed in 1:32.38 and good for 18th out of 31 squads. The SHS team: Reynoso, Cummings, Austin Chenault, and Springfield. In the sprint relay – the 4x100 meters – Reynoso, Cummings, Chenault, and Blake Sanders were timed in 45.12 seconds. That was 24th out of 40 teams. Legan said, “It was a good day. Now we will turn our attention to the district track meet and take it one meet at a time from there.” Other Springtown track and field athletes vied at Decatur March 28. At the varsity girls level, Kaitlin Hill won the 400 in 1:04.21. Hunter Robinson took the varsity pole vault at 12 feet. Next up is a Kennedale meet April 2. Then comes the district event at Porcupine Stadium April 15-16.

Kaitlyn Hill went 3-for-4 with a double and triple. The Lady Porcupines were terrors on the base paths as well, stealing 8 bases with White getting 3 and Ricks and Burris swiping 2 apiece. Frogs falls to Porcupines, 6-2 Every district game is crucial and the Porcupine baseball team got a victory over visiting Lake Worth. On March 27, Springtown led all the way en route to a 6-2 win against the Bullfrogs at the SHS diamond. The Porcupines jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning then scored single runs from the third to the sixth. Starting pitcher Logan McPherson fired a complete game 2-hitter and struck out 12 Lake Worth hitters – out of 21 outs. Springtown hitters also had their share of whiffs – 12 times

The busy Springtown netters continued their spring season with a trip to Glen Rose. There, the Porcupine squad claimed another first place plaque, Coach Ron Elston noted. Amber Benton had a memorable day, the coach said. Before play began, she discovered she had received a full academic scholarship to the University of North Texas in Denton. On the Glen Rose courts, the senior went 4-0 to win girls singles and the gold medal, capping a non-district stretch where she medaled in every tournament.
SHS had another gold medal effort: the mixed doubles duo of Ryan Huff-Michelle Padilla. Dawson Meek-Ryan Snow were silver medalists in boys doubles. Bronze winners included Joelle Mix (girls singles); Alex Medina (boys singles); Devin Davidson (boys singles consolation); and Logan LackeyJerry Lillo (boys doubles consolation) Just missing medaling were James Glover and Alex Conklin-Alex McCarthy. Coach Elston said Kaytie Andrews-Laura Lucia battled hard in girls doubles. District is the next tourney.

Home is a safe place to take your children In these days of social media, everyone is a critic. And, sometimes, their cyberwaves can cause damage to a movie. Certainly Tweeters and Facebookers had a go at one of the voice stars of Home these last couple of weeks. About the film Lots of folks were not too crazy about the heavily-tattooed Rihanna being the star of a child-slanted animated movie. Her music isn’t exactly kid friendly with songs like “S&M” and albums that are slapped with Explicit Content labels. She a neo-modern, scantilyclad pop singer whose antics, when mimicked by little girls attached to their iDevices, make soccer moms faint. But here Rihanna was – with a bevy of songs as well – heading a heavily-hyped cartoon aimed at children. Then there’s her famous confrontation with Chris Brown where Rihanna was physically assaulted – and she later returned to him; cyberspace has a big problem with that. Hence, social media lit up with concerns about Rihanna and Home. But it didn’t matter in the end. Home opened big at around $54 million and will keep making decent money for the next several weeks. So, the social media vampires move on to their next cultural victim.
for transport. An internet message from Oh – an invite to a party – alerts Gorg to the Boovs’ new location. The only way to stop Gorg is to figure out Oh’s password. But finding Oh himself is a problem; he’s on the run with Tip, to help her find her mother Lucy (Jennifer Lopez). With Pig tagging along, Tip and Oh head out on a road trip in a hover car converted by the alien. They find where Lucy is but first must stop Gorg. It looks like they succeed but then Gorg arrives ready to destroy the earth anyway. However, Oh figures out what exactly it is that Gorg wants – something that can save the world and the Boovs. What works Parsons is funny and Rihanna isn’t bad. His herky-jerky, queer English delivery gets laughs and Rihanna delivers some zingers. Home looks lovely. All the Boovs constantly change color and sometimes the screen lights up like a rainbow. There are a couple of solid scenes, including one where Tip waits for Oh who had dived into the ocean’s depths to “cool his core.” The sea reflects

Movie Man a wildly-starry night – Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” painting shows up in the movie, too – and it’s a knockout. (There’s some good 3-D here, reminiscent of Life of Pi [2012, Movie Man No. 1011, a 9, Best of Year] and that’s high praise.) The dancing scene teased on coming attractions delighted the audience most. The final reveal – what Gorg really wants from the Boov – is creative. Best scene (spoiler) Oh’s Boovian race is fleeing again since Gorg knows where they are and has arrived to destroy Earth. Oh has promised to help Tip
find her mom and they are very close to doing so in Australia. But his only chance for survival with his race is to leave right now. He can’t decide – looking back and forth frantically between the Boov spaceship and Tip to whom he owes a vow. The scene is powerful, especially for children.
The rating The PG for “rude humor” is really just for the bathroom scene: “Don’t eat the blue mint.” It’s mild.

needed a hit. After some monster successes early with the Shreks and Kung Fu Pandas, more recent efforts haven’t been home runs: Rise of the Guardians (2012), Turbo (2013), and last year’s Penguins of Madagascar (MM #No. 1115, a 7 [clearly the Movie Man liked it more than most]) didn’t light up the cash register. Home is cute. And safe. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

bar so high with the Shreks (one and two are Movie Man Bests of Year) that it’s nigh impossible to keep that pace. But Home doesn’t come close. It’s a safe movie with few adult jokes hidden about; most of the kids’ laughs come via the slapstick from Oh’s and the cat Pig’s tumbles. There were stretches of several minutes where there were no laughs at all, even from the children attending. Since the movie is so gentle, so is the message. This is Animation 101 – kid separated from parent, an unlikely friendship, a cute pet, imperiled situations, potty humor, learning to get along, happy ending – and that’s a snoozer for animation vets.

Watch the skies! by mark k. campbell They have their own secret language. Beaver tail. Rain foot. Virga. Scud. Such descriptions are common conversation starters for storm spotters. At a March 30 seminar put on by meteorologist Mark Fox of the National Weather Service at Weatherford College, this lingo and plenty of other queer verbiage proved invaluable in determining whether an approaching storm is just a rain-maker or could evolve into a tornado-spewing behemoth. Fox said Skywarn-trained storm spotters are essential for NWS meteorologists to determine exactly what’s going on weather-wise on any given agitated day. Then that information is passed on to media broadcasters who give the public the latest data. In severe weather, Fox said, even the high-tech NWS Dallas-Fort Worth facility can’t discern everything that’s occurring on turbulent days. “Eyes on the storm” are always needed. Hundreds of those eyes were focused on Fox as he detailed methods for deciphering the sky for clues that reveal how a simple looking cloud can blossom into a potentially deadly supercell. Those are the bad guys – supercells. The mighty storms can bring heavy rain, substantial hail, and tornados. But they can be ID’d early and advance warning can save lives. Ever-rotating supercells display specific mannerisms at multiple levels. At the mid and upper levels of the storms, a thick anvil shaped peak will be accompanied by a “cauliflower” updraft tower. The storm could brandish “stacked ridges” also known as striations. Nearer the ground supercells will possess a wall cloud – the lowest level bulge that’s almost always rain-free. Adjacent will be an inflow area where warm, moist air is getting sucked into the storm, along with scuds – small unattached clouds that involuntarily become part of the supercell. There could also be a beaver tail – a low, broad, flat cloud that is attached to the updraft base. NWS meteorologists can’t see the inflow updraft column on radar, making spotters’ work crucial. The tornado threat rises when air flow into the supercell increases, and there is visible rotation beyond the massive complex’s general movement. Fox said shelf clouds mimic wall clouds and knowing the

Trouble was a-brewin’ in March 2014 as a storm cloud began building an “updraft tower” on a moist spring afternoon. Storm spotters keep their eyes on the skies ering roadways, mistakenly believing a high-profile vehicle can traverse the powerful flow. Fox went on to lecture spotters – some attending again for refreshment or renewed certification – of the importance of being cautious when out in the field. He said spotters always need an escape route, and they need to be aware of nearby intersections and roadways to give accurate reports. And lightning is always a danger, no matter the storm size. After two hours, the basic course had been covered and attendees now knew that strong outflow winds can cause a rain foot: “a horizontal bulging of a precipitation shaft near the ground, forming a foot-shaped The anatomy of a supercell shown during the National prominence.” Spotters could now inform Weather Service’s storm spotter class conducted in Weatherford March 30. Photo by Mark K. Campbell others that virga is rain that information after heavy rains, too. Fox said flash flooding kills more people annually expected, Fox said. Hail sizes range from ¼ inch than tornados. He added that – “pea” – to 4.5 inches – “soft- 75 percent of flash flood deaths are men, often trying to drive ball.” Spotters provide important through the rushing water covn STORM, FROM PAGE 1B.
PC indicts 3 from Springtown, 1 from Azle by carla noah stutsman A Parker County grand jury handed down 21 indictments when it met to consider evidence in criminal cases presented by the Parker County District Attorney’s Office March 19. Of the 21 individuals indicted, three are from the Springtown area and one is from Azle. • Kenneth Lee Stembridge,
30, of Springtown, was indicted for possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 1, less than one gram, a state jail felony. • Dakota Shawn Gilbert, 22, of Springtown, was indicted for sexual assault of a child, a second-degree felony. • Shawn Patrick Hurst III, 20, Springtown, was indicted for
evading arrest with a vehicle, a third-degree felony, and for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony. • Corey Gene Morrison, 34, of Azle, was indicted for burglary of a building, a state jail felony. Morrison was also indicted for theft of materials (metal), a third-degree felony.
Flash floods kill more people in Texas annually than tornados. This downpour last July quickly flooded Azle’s Industrial Avenue. Photo by Mark K. Campbell evaporates before it reaches the ground, looking streaky or stringy in the sky while hanging from a cloud base. Fox chuckled as he let everyone know that “tornado on the
ground” is redundant. There’s either a tornado – a “violently rotating column of air in contact with the ground – or a funnel cloud – a “condensation funnel” not in touch with the
surface. Afterward, scores of storm spotters spilled out into a perfect spring night that offered no weather hazards whatsoever. But there’s always tomorrow.
