Facebook scam hits Springtown BY NATALIE GENTRY Another new scam has popped up in the Facebook universe. This time the scammers are creating “clone” accounts of people who may already be on the targeted person’s friends list or who are friends of friends. Local scam victim Brenda Chapmon Harris, of Springtown, says this has happened to her twice. “I got a message from Mary Harms supposedly asking for a friend request,” Harris said. “I accepted and ‘she’ began messaging me. “The moment the messages started talking about winning some money and a laptop, I knew it wasn’t Mary, so I called her to let her know about it,” she continued. Harms said she has since changed her password in case this was an instance of her account being hacked.

Graduation contingency in place if rains don’t stop

BY NATALIE GENTRY Springtown High School will be celebrating the Class of 2015 graduation this Saturday, May 30 at 8 p.m. at Porcupine Stadium. Hopefully. The recent bout of inclement weather and the forecast for this weekend has made it apparent that the contingency plan may be put into play this year. Beware of Facebook fakes Springtown Independent School District (SISD) Superintendent Mike Kelley cautions parents and graduates alike to be careful where they get their information about the event. “There are several Facebook pages

Harris said the same scenario happened again about a week later with another Springtown user’s account. She also noted that not everyone catches on at first. One of her friends sent $300 to a scammer who used the same approach. “She was so upset when she realized she had lost that money,” Harris said. “These people are taking advantage of people who are trusting.” According to the Better Business Bureau, this is a fairly new scam making its way around the social media website. They recommend taking the following steps to make sure Facebook users don't fall victim to this kind of trick:

that might appear to be school-sponsored or school-sanctioned pages, but in fact have no affiliation or legitimate association with the District,” Kelley said. “Please do not rely on Facebook pages titled ‘Springtown ISD High School,’ ‘Springtown ISD High School Graduation’ or ‘Springtown ISD Parents in the Know.’ “While they may appear to be legitimate and could even include information the district has shared through school-sponsored sites, these pages are not ours and should not be viewed as such,” he continued. Kelley has posted information about PLEASE SEE SISD, PAGE 3A.

“Serving Springtown Since 1977”

Easing the Sting of Strep Throat Strep throat is a common and contagious infection caused by a type of bacteria called Group A streptococcus. Strep throat is especially common among children between the ages of 5 and 15. The infection can live in the throat and nose for months without causing any harm. However, exposure to other children, stress, colds, and changes in weather may activate the bacteria. Not all sore throats are strep throats. A child with strep throat will experience symptoms within three to five days such as red/white patches in the throat, tender or swollen glands in the neck, enlarged tonsils, fever, stomach pain, and painful swallowing. Because the infection can live in the throat and nose, activities like sneezing, coughing, or shaking hands can spread the infection. If the physician suspects a child has strep throat, he or she may do a rapid strep test in the office. Strep throat is usually treated with either penicillin or amoxicillin. If a child is allergic to penicillin, his or her doctor may prescribe antibiotics such as Keflex, Biaxin, Azithromycin, or Clindamycin. Parents can help care for their children by giving plenty of water to prevent dehydration and warm soup to ease painful swallowing. It is also important to stress good hygiene to prevent the spread of infection.

Music is great, but can a song save your life?

O

n David Letterman’s last show, he exited his lengthy TV career to a song by the Foo Fighters, “Everlong.” He mentioned how special the song was to him as he recovered from heart surgery years earlier. I know what he’s talking about. Sometimes a song takes on some kind of special power, one that affects only you in an indescribable way. And you latch onto it for dear life. For most of us, “Everlong” is just another rock song. But not for Letterman.

That’s how I feel about an obscure song you’ve probably never heard of, R.E.M.’s “Endgame.” In February 1996 – early on the morning of the 27th, to be exact – I was heading to what would become a five-alarm apartment fire in Arlington. But I never made it. En route, I felt left arm numbness, unbelievable nausea, and I started sweating madly. Holy cow, was I having a heart atON YOUR tack at 39 years old?! MARK I spent the rest of the shift in the ER; then, after the blood work was deemed Mark K. Campbell okay, I was sent home. But the symptoms returned, and I

began an insane amount of testing to try to figure out what was wrong. I was ridiculously fit then: I tested in the one percentile of humanity on the treadmill. (Oh, to be in such good shape today!) All tests kept coming back fine; they final-

ly settled on reflux as the culprit, but I knew it was not just that. (A truism: No one will ever know your body better than you.) So, while I went through proddings and pokings, I would come home – incredibly nauseated with plenty of anxiety – and plop down in front of our home computer (a behemoth tower in those days). The machine could play music and I put in R.E.M.’s Out of Time then clicked over to “Endgame.” There are no words in it – just some “da-das.” I don’t know why I found such solace in the music, but I did. Somehow, I knew I wouldn’t die if

that song was playing. Sounds dumb, of course, but I sat there and listened to “Endgame” (appreciating the irony of the title) over and over and over. Day after day. Over and over. I finally self-diagnosed myself with physical exhaustion. I began taking a few vacation days. And, weeks later, I started a steady recovery. Can a song save your life? I don’t have solid proof, but I say yes. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor and figured a religious song should’ve fixed things but that wasn’t the case in 1996 despite plenty of cueing up of DC Talk’s “Jesus Freak.”

D

on Smelley, Parker County Farm Bureau president, said a new ruling by the House of Representatives against the Environmental Protection Agency is a good thing. The U.S. House moved to stop the implementation of the EPA’s Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) effort.

Smelley said that plan would “greatly limit what Texas landowners are able to do with their property.” WOTUS would have expanded federal jurisdiction over very small water bodies, flood plains, and land that is not even wet most of the time, Smelley said. “We want clean water,” he said. “But that’s not what this is. This is an attempt

to control what we do on our lands. “The move by the U.S. House is a step in the right direction.” The president said plenty of farmers and ranchers in Parker County had voiced opposition. “It’s time to ditch this rule for Texas’ sake,” Smelley said. he haying season was an important event. We used a clumsy horse rake that was dragged along the ground by one horse. When the rake was full, it was dumped by a sort of revolving process. I recall one incident in which the performance of this duty involved me in a peck of trouble, and shed a new light on the subject in a ‘pointed’ way, so to speak. “It was a hot day, in midsummer, and I was so sleepy that I nearly fell off the horse at times. Father was holding the rake, and manipulating its eccentric evolutions, or rather its revolutions. The old sorrel horse was apparently ruminating on the futility of ‘making hay while the sun shone.’ All nature seemed to be inclined to drowse, when suddenly there was an awakening. Old Sorrel was making a futile effort to kick some object off his left ear with his near hind foot. “Then he manifested a desire to jump out of his harness, kick the rake The

over or perform other similar exercises, which no well-regulated horse should be guilty of, under normal conditions. On looking back over my shoulder I observed that Father was engaged in a mysterious and inexplicable operation. He had a wisp of hay in one hand and his old straw hat in the other, and was seemingly attempting to brush something away from his neck and head. “About this time I was made painfully aware of the true inwardness of the situation. I wore a hickory shirt and a very loose pair of trousers. A big bumblebee had found his way up the leg of my nether garment, and when he reached the right place, he left a deep impression, causing me to dismount suddenly and emulate Father's example in hunting a wisp of hay. When the excitement subsided we smoked out the bees and dug up their nest, which was hidden in a little hole in the meadow. “There was weeding to be done, and it seemed as if we never could get

This pond was almost circular in shape. At one side was a gravelly beach where we undressed. Here the water was com-

paratively shallow, and the little fellows could wade and splash about in safety. Over on the south side was a steep bank, standing five or six feet above the level of the pond. “An old elm stump projected over the water and made an excellent place from which to dive. Ordinarily the water was from five to six feet in depth. The fellow who could take a header from the old stump was entitled to high rank among the daredevils. It seems but yesterday when my brothers, Frank, Albert, little brother Arthur, and myself made our way to the shady spot around the Stump Pond. “The Mathews boys were often there, too. There was Lute, killed years ago, accidentally in Colorado, Will, who died in Colorado as a result of overwork as a physician, Elwyn, and Benny, all glorious fellows. What a noisy lot of roisterers we were. And how we did enjoy the old swimming holes. “And so the time was spent, the hard work giving added zest to play. Not far

from the house, on the other side of the creek was a small garden spot, in which Father planted a grove of walnut trees, about the time we moved into the concrete house near the creek. This was about 1867 or 1868. I dropped the nuts for him, which he covered with a hoe. These grew, and in after years made a beautiful grove. A natural grove already adjoined the walnut grove, which we improved, for a picnic ground. It was a grand place for picnics and family reunions. “The young people of the neighborhood gathered here and had all sorts of fun. They would build a platform, and have a dance occasionally. We would take our old cabinet organ over there, and with violins, cello and other instruments we made the old woods ring. I played the violin. Albert furnished the bass with his cello, and sister Lottie played the organ, very skillfully.” Laurie Moseley is an author, archeologist and historian who lives in Springtown. Texas government trinity of Abbott, Patrick, Straus announce tax relief package compromise

G

ov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Joe Straus on May 21 jointly announced a $3.8 billion tax relief package for Texas businesses and homeowners. According to the announcement, the agreement reached by Patrick and Straus on a tax proposal, along with additional legislation, includes: 1. A 25 percent permanent reduction in the business margins tax; 2. A $10,000 increase in the homestead exemption, beginning in 2015, subject to passage of a constitutional amendment adopted in the November election; and 3. SB 1760, legislation requiring a 60 percent vote of the governing body of any taxing unit wishing to adopt an increase in property taxes that exceeds the effective tax rate. “Texas leaders have come to-

gether to advance conservative principles that will improve the lives of Texans and continue to make Texas the model for doing business,” Abbott said. “Every dollar businesses and homeowners pay in taxes is a dollar that could be invested in new jobs, higher wages and stimulating the Texas economy.” Meanwhile, the passage of a state budget for fiscal years 2016 and 2017, the Legislature’s primary task, is in its final stages. The buzz around the Capitol before Memorial Day weekend was that with tax relief resolved, an agreement on the budget that will satisfy the governor’s expectations will soon follow. Unemployment numbers reported Texas Workforce Commission on May 22 reported Texas has added an estimated 287,000 seasonally adjusted jobs over the past year including a modest gain in April with the ad-

dition of 1 , 2 0 0 p o s i tions during the month. T h e state unemployment rate remained steady at STATE 4.2 percent in CAPITAL April, down a HIGHLIGHTS full perEd Sterling centage point from 5.2 percent a year ago. Texas continues to trend well below the national unemployment rate of 5.4 percent. Job gains for April were led by the Leisure and Hospitality industry, which added 6,900 positions. The Information industry enjoyed its largest monthly gain for the industry since June 2000 with the addition of 3,400 jobs in April.

Other Services gained 2,800 jobs during the month followed by Trade, Transportation and Utilities, which expanded by 2,100 positions. “We know that there are still folks who are looking for goodpaying jobs in our state and we encourage them to take advantage of the many resources made available through Texas Workforce Solutions,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “Through our Workforce Solutions offices around the state, staff that can help steer job seekers to employment and training opportunities. With more than 260,000 available jobs currently posted on WorkInTexas.com, job seekers have good options here in Texas.” Legislators agree on e-cig bill SB 97 by Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen, would ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. The Senate concurred

with House amendments on May 18, allowing the legislation to proceed to the governor’s office for a final signature. According to the Senate news service, House provisions added to the bill would strengthen on-line sales restrictions and the penalty for selling e-cigarettes to minors would be a fine of up to $500, the same as selling tobacco products to a minor. If Gov. Abbott signs the bill into law, it will take effect on Oct. 1. E-cigarettes vaporize a liquid containing nicotine that is inhaled by the user. Hinojosa expressed concern that use of “vaping” products is growing among younger Texans, saying, “We now have many minors using e-cigs in school because they think that it is a way to avoid smoking tobacco cigarettes.” A 2014 survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Federal Drug Administration shows e-cigarette use increas-

ing from 4.5 percent to 13.4 percent of high school students and 1.1 percent to 3.9 percent of middle school students in a single year. Weekend patrols to increase Texas Department of Public Safety on May 20 announced a plan to increase trooper patrols this Memorial Day weekend on Texas roadways. Troopers will be looking for drunken drivers, speeding, and seat belt and other traffic violators statewide. Last year during the Memorial Day weekend, DPS troopers arrested 413 drunk drivers and issued 5,439 speeding citations, 1,053 seat belt and child safety restraint tickets, and cited 684 drivers for driving without insurance. Additionally, troopers made 182 fugitive arrests and 168 felony arrests. Summer camps ready to kick off next week; POJO Maker deadline May 31 It’s summer sports camp time! Beginning June 1 with volleyball, several other camps run all the way into August. The volleyball camp is set for June 1-4 for youth entering grades 4-9. It costs $50 and will be conducted at the Springtown High School gym. Also beginning June 1 is the arrival of the annual Speed and Strength Camp known as the POJO Maker.

That fee is $100 and it runs six weeks, through July 16. Held at the SHS Multi-Purpose Center (MPC), the POJO Maker is split into two sessions – one for boys entering grades 9-12 and another for boys 7-8 and girls 7-12. The registration deadline is May 31. Other camps: • Soccer – June 2-5, three sessions for grades 1-3; 4-6; and 7-9 at Porcupine Stadium.

$30/$40/$50. • Baseball – June 8-11, grades 3-9 at the MPC. $50 • Girls’ basketball – June 8-11 for grades K-9 at the SHS gym. $50 • Softball – June 15-18, two sessions for grades 3-5 and 6-9 at the SHS softball field. $40/$50 • Boys’ basketball – June 1518, grades K-8 at the SHS gym. $50

• Football – July 27-30, grades 7-9 at the MPC. $50 A pair of “elite” camps is also slated. For the special soccer camp, the dates are June 2-5 with a $60 fee. Boys take the pitch from 9-11 a.m. and girls from 11:15-1:15 p.m. The camps for grades 9-12 will be held at the stadium. The Elite Volleyball Camp arrives July 30-Aug. 1 for

grades 9-12 and costs $125. It’s set for the SHS gym. All camp information is available at springtownisd.net under “Athletics” and “General Information.” Excluding elite camps, each child after the first one that registers for the same camp from the same family can participate at half price. More info at 817-220-3040, the athletic director’s office.

Oops... Last week, we said that Dillon Springfield was the first Porcupine state track champion. That’s wrong. Former Athletic Director Bill Reed recalled that someone in the mid-1960’s won a state title. He’s right. SHS’ first track champ – according to UIL archives – was Floyd Worlow who won the 1A shot in 1966 with a throw of 53 feet, 11.75 inches. We’re sorry about that error and are happy to set the record straight.

Movie Man

Forecast for Disney’s Tomorrowland: Boring Ah, Disney: The kings of making bland, forgettable movies – films that look so fantastic in advance and end up being “well, that was okay, I guess.” Tomorrowland is another one of those. About the film (spoiler) The Movie Man got suckered in to putting Tomorrowland on his top 10 for the summer; that might become a rare Movie Man misfire. While the advance notices were not great, Disney put on a big push to get audiences to the movie. But there’s some grumbling out there that the PG rating is too light. There are some startlingly violent scenes in Tomorrowland that are surprising some folks who are taking their young children to auditoriums. Instead of a sci-fi-lite, follow-your-dream gooey Disney concoction, there are scenes of decapitation, amputation, fights, and even a little girl getting hit by a car. (It’s all robot damage, but they look human and that’s freaking out some children, apparently.) So maybe Tomorrowland should be a PG-13. There have been plenty of movies that have questionable ratings – in fact deciding on how to rate a movie in the first place has been a chore ever since the initial ratings system in 1968 of G, M, R, and X (soon, M was changed to GP). The big change arrived in 1984. Earlier, in 1975, Jaws got a PG yet it was full of horrific images. Then came 1984 when Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (directed, like Jaws, by Steven Spielberg) and Gremlins (produced by Spielberg) were also parentally ragged for having too many scenes deemed inappropriate for children. So the PG-13 was born – a rating to span the PG and R ratings. (Originally the rating was to be PG-14.) The first movie to get a PG-13 was Red Dawn on July 1, 1984. Today, there are still ratings controversies and studios battle for the coveted PG-13 rather

than the R – which theoretically bans many teenagers and therefore cuts into the theatrical take. Cuts are almost always made after previews to make sure that the friendlier PG-13 is achieved. Tomorrowland probably should be a PG-13. The plot Today’s world is crumbling. There are wars and famine and death and mayhem everywhere. Genius teenager Casey (Britt Robertson), daughter of a NASA scientist (Tim McGraw) who will soon be out of work, gets arrested for damaging a launch pad. When she gets her items back from the cops, a pin is with her belongings. Picking it up, she gets a glimpse of a futuristic society. A little girl, Athena (Raffey Cassidy), comes looking for Robertson. Their journey leads them to cranky adult Frank (George Clooney) who was part of Tomorrowland, a secret society where the best of the best worked, as a child. Robertson’s very presence causes a monitor blip that shocks Clooney. Soon, they are set upon by killer humanoid robots from Tomorrowland. The only way to stop what is deemed the end of the world in 58 days is to travel to the dimension that houses Tomorrowland.

Tomorrowland

email: movieman@azlenews.net

There, Governor Nix (Hugh Laurie) oversees a dilapidated landscape – one far different looking than Robertson glimpsed. Laurie says Earth had plenty of chances to be a wonderful place but they blew it, so Tomorrowland is going to let the world end. But, Robertson has a plan… What works Clooney is always fun. He’s a bit craggy these days, but he wears it well and it fits this role. The movie is much better when he’s around. Laurie makes for a good bad guy, too. The actual plot – that there’s a pin that can take you to a wonderland – is a great idea. Even though opportunities seem

squandered, there are some nice images (see Best scene) and scenes where participants can see mere seconds into the future pay off. There’s a fun (and violent) sequence in a Houston toy store that contains a ton of “Easter eggs” for the Disney faithful. Best scene (spoiler) The ending helps Tomorrowland a lot. The day has been saved and a new breed of young human-looking robots is being sent to Earth to seek out the next

generation of dreamers and creators. The unique pin is shown being clandestinely given to a variety of folks – environmentalists, singers, artists, scientists – all of whom, in the final scene, pop up in a vast wheat field with Tomorrowland in the distance. It’s a great image. What doesn’t work (spoilers) This is classic, icky, treehugging Disney at its finest – peace, love, and happiness will help us all get along. The plot’s pivot point – that a giant antenna is beaming negative images down to Earth and that’s what’s causing all the evil in the world – is pretty dumb. And so is the resolution to take down the tower. Robertson is grating and buying her as a genius is hard. The scene where Clooney says farewell to young girl robot Cassidy it’s a little creepy. He fell in love with her as a young boy; of course, she never aged, so grizzly, teary-eyed old man Cooney hovering over an 8-year-old girl is more than offputting. Even Movie Wife noted

the lack of “flow” in Tomorrowland. The movie staggers around herky-jerky, and it’s anything but smooth. The rating As mentioned, the violence is severe enough to warrant a PG-13 and that car-hitting-girl scene is downright shocking. Summing up Even with director Brad Bird and Lost’s Damon Lindelof involved, Tomorrowland is a disappointment. It should’ve been an awe-inspiring marvel, yet, somehow, it’s almost boring. A great exchange

Student from Germany samples American life in Azle

BY MISTY SHAW It’s not every day that a high school student leaves home at age 15 and flies halfway across the world to join a new family in a different country. But that’s exactly what foreign exchange students do, including Azle High School’s Benedikt Witteler, who came here from Germany last year as part of the Northwest Student Exchange (NWSE) program. “I’m having a good time,” Witteler said. “In the beginning it was probably a little hard, but I never really was homesick. “It was super easy for me to make friends. Everybody was really nice and now I have a lot of friends here, so that’s great.” A new family Witteler has become a valued member of the Roddy family, bonding closely with fellow AHS student Xan Roddy and his older sister, Kali Roddy, who live in Azle with their grandparents, Earyl and Betty Roddy. “It’s been a great experience for us,” said Earyl Roddy. “Benedikt just fits in extremely well with the family – right from the beginning, he started catching on to the family jokes and everything that we do.” Though he is a long way from his home and family in the

Witteler has two older sisters, both of whom also participated in a foreign exchange program.

that was a great experience in the summer. It’s just a lot of fun to do it on a daily basis.” Subtle differences Witteler noted how much longer the school day is in America, but that hasn’t kept PLEASE SEE AZLE, PAGE 2B.

him from excelling academically. “School is not so hard here, not so stressful,” he said. “Here, with no high effort, I’m able to make really good grades, like all A’s and not have any trouble. But for the effort I give here, in Germany, I would make like C’s and D’s.” Earyl Roddy says Witteler is dedicated to his studies and has a strong work ethic. “He’s a very hard worker -he works very hard on his academics and wants to succeed there. That’s just his way.” Witteler even earned a letter jacket for his accomplishments in band, Roddy said. “He did a solo in the UIL competition, so he’s qualified to get a letter jacket,” said Roddy. “They’ll be ordering that next week and it won’t be in until the fall, so we’ll ship it to him. But he’ll be the only one in his (German) high school with an Benedikt Witteler just finAmerican letter jacket to wear.” ished his sophomore year at AHS. they’re very nice people, very supportive,” Earyl Roddy said. “I don’t know if we will, but someday we’d sure like to meet them,” Earyl Roddy said. Xan Roddy says he definitely plans to visit Witteler in Germany someday; he’s already trying to save money for the trip. “At my house, you’re always welcome,” Witteler told Roddy. Bonds to last a lifetime With the school year coming to a close this week, Witteler will soon return home with “mixed feelings” about leaving his Roddy family. “Of course I’m looking forward to seeing my family again, and my German friends, but like, one week later, I’m going to feel the same way about the people and family here,” he said. “But I think it’s a good sign if I’m going to miss everybody here. You just can’t be in two places at the same time.” Xan Roddy said “Benny told me he wishes he could just go to Germany for like, two weeks, and then come back here, and just go back and forth – he wants to stay here, but he also wants to see his family.” Perhaps that’s what makes it so hard for Witteler to leave, having had such a positive experience in America. “I am glad that I got to go the entire school year,” Witteler said. “It gives you so much more experience, and it helps my English, which has gotten better, and I think you’re learning way more after 10 months, so I’m glad that I got to stay.” Life will be different for the Roddy family, too, after “Benny” has gone back to Germany. “We’re definitely going to miss him,” Earyl Roddy said, to which Witteler immediately replied, “I’m going to miss you!” Consider hosting Jackubowski said hosting a foreign exchange student is a fun and rewarding experience for all involved, and encouraged more local families to participate. “We’re not looking for just traditional families – it can be single-parent families, retirees – anybody can host these students,” she said. For more information about the NWSE program, email susanjackubowski@gmail.com or call 678-429-6707.

The Azle News and Springtown Epigraph welcome new part-time reporter Misty Shaw to the editorial staff. “I’m really excited to be here,” Shaw said. “Everyone has been so warm and friendly, and I enjoy getting to know people in my new community.” Though she is new to the area, Shaw is no stranger to the newspaper business. After graduating from Tarleton State University with a BA in English, she got her start in 2004 as a reporter for the Stephenville Empire-Tribune. She was promoted to News Editor in 2006, but shortly thereafter, her husband, Doug Shaw, gained employment with the State of Texas in Austin, so the couple relocated. After living in Austin for almost a decade, the Shaws happily returned to the North Texas area, having moved to Springtown three months ago. After working as a proofreader for the last several years, Shaw says she was eager to get back to her writing roots as a newspaper reporter. “I sort of stumbled upon the perfect opportunity to join the excellent staff here, so I

Mesothelioma may occur 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Many workers were exposed from the 1940s through the 1970s. Industrial and construction workers, along with their families (second hand exposure) are among those at risk for mesothelioma, lung cancer or gastro cancer (throat, stomach, colon). Our Troops and Veterans

How to give back to veterans Members of the military serve their country proudly, often sacrificing the luxuries of home and time spent with their families to do so. When veterans return home from training or deployment, many people want to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices made by the men and women of the military, but donÕt know the best way to share that appreciation. Donations to a veterans’ charity is one measure of support the public can offer. Many charities work to serve the needs of veterans. The Wounded Warrior Project provides rehabilitation, counseling and activities for veterans who were wounded during service, while Homes for Our Troops remodels homes or builds them for troops who were injured and need their homes remodeled as a result of their injuries. The USO provides a variety of services for veterans and can always use donations or volunteers. Another way to help veterans is to assist with their pets. Some dogs and cats get left behind when troops are deployed or forced to move. Volunteering to foster a pet until a soldier returns is another way to give back. Some military service dogs can be injured or traumatized during battle. Working dogs can be rehabilitated or adopted upon returning home. According to the organization Veterans, Inc., veterans are more at risk of becoming homeless than those who do not serve in the military. Some causes of homelessness include lack of education and transferable skills after returning from military life. Physical and mental health issues can make finding work challenging. Some veterans may cope with trauma resulting from their deployment by leaning on drugs and alcohol, and that can interfere with their ability to get and/ or keep jobs. Individuals can help veterans by opening their homes to friends and family members who may need a temporary place to stay. Encourage

veterans to embrace job training programs or seek therapy if necessary. Providing support to military personnel both past and present can mean a world of difference. Correspond with veter-

ans through mail, email or text messages. Operation American Soldier establishes connections between civilians and troops so that all soldiers receive daily mail, whether it’s a care package or letter of thanks.

Other simple ways people can give back to troops is to personally thank them for serving their country. Share time with veterans and ask to spend time listening to their stories and experiences.
