A Memorable Graduation Moment
Boil water notice may be extended until all lines repaired BY NATALIE GENTRY The Springtown public works department has had its hands full due to the flooding and high waters caused by recent storms. But financial help might be coming. Workers are currently working on a 10-inch main transmission waterline in the middle of Walnut Creek. This line provides water from Springtown’s plant – located in the
City of Reno – to the City of Springtown. According to City Administrator Doug Hughes, once the work on this leak is complete there are two smaller repairs that will need to be made as well. Hughes also said that as of now the two city water wells and Walnut Creek Water Supply are able to provide water to customers.
“The city may get a water test result back [June 4],” he said. “This test will indicate if the city can rescind the boil water notice. “Our water system has been hit hard by the May floods and there are still parts of the system that needs to be repaired,” Hughes continued. “Even if the boil notices are rescinded, I am recommending water customers to watch for additional boil notices.” Governor Greg Abbott has added Parker County to an Emergency Disaster Proclamation. Hughes said he received an email from Parker County Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator Janice Stroud outlining the information the city needs to submit in order to receive federal funding to help with repairs. Hughes said the city is meticulously documenting the cost of repairs, equipment usage, and manpower required in order to submit the information to the county. For more information about the boil water notice call City Hall at 817-2204834.

Class of 2015 graduates Thousands gather despite weather concerns BY NATALIE GENTRY Predictions of inclement weather for the night of Springtown High School’s graduation had officials on edge, but luckily the storms never materialized. Thousands of family and friends of Walnut Creek once more was rushing Saturday, May 30 after yet SHS graduates gathered under a clear another bout of damaging storms. Photo by Mark K. Campbell sky at Porcupine Stadium May 31.
With the stands packed to standing room only, the Class of 2015 received their degrees. For the first time, SHS Principal Scott McPherson led the proceedings that began with the procession of 190 graduates across the turf accompanied by a traditional rendition of “Pomp
and Circumstance” played by the high school band. Valedictorian Dawson Hinkley and salutatorian Grace Scott led the class. Both gave moving and insightful addresses to their peers, friends, and PLEASE SEE GRADS, PAGE 2A.

This storm clobbered Springtown and just about everyone else when it roared in from the west on Thursday evening, May 28. The downpour capped off what was the wettest May in recorded weather history. The official total at DFW Airport was 16.96 inches – 12.22 inches above normal. The old mark was 13.66. Photo by Mark K. Campbell

families as they reminisced about their times at SHS and looked toward their future. The ceremony took on a somber note as the Class of 2015 remembered classmate Haley Mobley, who died of cancer in 2011. This year’s winner of the Excellence in Education Award, Curtis Carter, added to the accolades of the class by noting that students often leave an impression on him. McPherson announced that this class of SHS students earned an astonishing $1,194,542 in scholarships to continue their educations. “Graduation day is, of course, a standard of achievement for
these graduates,” McPherson said. “It is also symbolic of the incredible support each student has received from their parents, grandparents, relatives, siblings, friends, employers, teachers, and other classmates.” Next, the Class of 2015 began accepting degrees and congratulations from school board members amid hoots and hollers from proud spectators. When they reached McPherson, many students slipped something into his hand – a golf tee or a pack of golf balls…and one 5-gallon bucket. Approximately 90 minutes after it began, all the speeches were given, caps were tossed, and the Class of 2015 filed back across the field and into the future.
The SHS Class of 2015 celebrate their accomplishment with the traditional throwing of the mortarboards.
Singing the National Anthem before the ceremony were: (l-r) Emily Mitchell, Taylor Myrick, Mistian Whitehead, and Donovan Warren. Principal Scott McPherson shares handshakes and hugs during the graduates’ parade. Here Mykeal Cummings passes McPherson a golf tee, one of many “gifts” given to the new principal.

Jerry T. Hall Memorial Golf Tournament Excellence in Education Award winner Curtis Carter acknowledged that by selecting him for this award, which requires him to speak in front of a crowd, graduates got him back for asking so many questions in class. Salutatorian Grace Scott

Springtown man indicted for child porn possession
NEWS DIGEST Annual bike rally arrives June 6
57 images found on Ratliff’s phone BY NATALIE GENTRY A Parker County grand jury has indicted Hansel Michael Ratliff, 40, of Springtown on six counts of possession of child pornography. According to a probable cause affidavit, Dallas police were notified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) that an image of suspected child pornography had been uploaded from an email account belonging to Ratliff last November. After NCMEC provided the investigator with the IP address and date of the upload, an investigator with the Dallas Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force
was able to trace the upload IP address to Ratliff’s address, according to the affidavit. Dallas police provided the information to the Parker County Sheriff’s Office in January. According to the affidavit, although Ratliff at first denied viewing any child pornography, he later told a Parker County Sheriff’s Investigator he viewed the image of suspected child pornography on a cell phone. He also confirmed that he used the same IP that had been used to upload the image. Investigator Joshua Pitman noted in the affidavit that Ratliff acknowledged he does have urges for underage girls, Hansel Michael Ratliff
Gee awarded State Fair scholarship
and said his urges got the best of him. Pitman also wrote that Ratliff said he can normally subdue his urges, and this incident was a one-time occurrence. The Sheriff’s office seized Ratliff’s phones after they obtained a search warrant for the phones. Fifty-seven images of suspected child pornography and child erotica, including some images of young children being sexually abused by adults, were located on one of the phones, according to a Parker County Sheriff’s investigator. Ratliff remained in the Parker County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bond.

Capitol idea! American Heritage Girls attend conference in Austin Jordan Russell, 16, of Springtown knows what it means to set a goal and work hard to achieve it. Her goal was to hold the first ever American Heritage Girls (AHG) Day at the Texas Capitol. Russell’s goal was realized when 325 AHG girls and their families visited the Capitol to attend the event led by the Springtown youth May 19. The girls and some of their Trail Life USA brothers worked on their citizenship and government badges while meeting their representatives and senators. The crowd assembled in the Dr. Robert Moss told Springtown Optimists that this Texas House gallery when a All-American Bike Rally could draw more bicyclist than memorial resolution was read in honor of a fellow AHG leader. the previous five. Photo by Mark K. Campbell The program was presented with a resolution by the senate honoring AHG, its 20th year, and its profound positive effect on today’s youth. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick came out to address the girls.

And, once again, Dr. Robert Moss – a bike enthusiast himself – is the chairman of the Springtown Chamber of Commerce fundraiser.
State Rep. Phil King spoke and made a presentation, taking time to take a selfie with Russell. King’s office worked with Russell, holding a couple of meetings with her to help with the logistics of the event. The girls learned how a bill becomes a law, how the legislative process works, who can vote, who represents them and an abundance of other information including characteristics of several different forms of government. During one of the teaching sessions, Russell even juggled bread to reinforce a lesson she was teaching. She also employed a variety of teaching styles to engage the girls in the learning process, including skits, quotes from different popular movies and founding fathers, slide presentations, and hands-on projects In return for her dedication to the event, Russell was praised

One girl, who actually lives less than 30 minutes from the Capitol, went out of her way to let Russell know how happy she was that she was given the opportunity. “I can’t believe I’m 15 and this is my first time to visit the
Capitol, and it’s all because of you that I am here,” she said. Girls from 22 troops across Texas attended this inaugural event and hope it becomes an annual occurrence. Troop TX5160 of Weatherford was the host troop for the event.

Agnes Baptist Church sees results of ministry in an unexpected place – home BY NATALIE GENTRY Pastor Doug Harris of Agnes Baptist Church in Springtown shared a story with the church Sunday morning (May 24) about the sale of the church’s bus. “We had been contemplating selling our church bus for the last couple of years, but we’ve never really gotten serious about it,” Harris said. “I finally posted it on Craigslist a few weeks ago.” Harris received a couple of phone calls, but nothing serious. “Then I got a call from a man that lives south of Houston, which is about six hours away,” he said. “He wanted to come look at our bus Saturday morning, to which I agreed. “I was a little skeptical of
someone coming so far to look at our old 1989 Ford bus.” A group of seven men actually came to Springtown, and Harris found out through casual conversation that three of the men were pastors. “They began to tell me that they were all from Monterrey, Mexico,” Harris said. “Two of them still pastor there and one of them is a missionary from there sent to Angleton.” Harris told the group about a mission trip he took more than 20 years ago to Monterrey that changed his life and confirmed his call to the ministry. “I told them how I had lost touch with the missionary I went to see, but was reacquainted with him when
Pastor Doug Harris (right) met with a group from Monterrey, Mexico interested in buying the church’s bus. I took the pastorate at Agnes because this church had supported him for years and years,” he said. “I then asked if they knew this missionary named Daniel Jones.” When Harris said Jones’ name, he said the men’s eyes lit up. “They were all saved and trained under Daniel’s ministry – they went to his Bible college in Mexico, they were ordained by Brother Jones and sent out of his church,” Harris said. “I was experiencing missions come full circle! “They began to thank me for our church supporting the
Joneses and to tell me how God was using them to do what churches in the States have been doing for years, which is sending out missionaries.” The men test-drove the bus and were ready to pay the asking price, but before they could give Harris the money, he told them that Agnes Baptist Church wanted to give them the bus to help them carry on in their ministry. “God has an amazing way of bringing people together for His kingdom,” Harris said. “I am glad we were able to have a part!”
Springtown woman helps seach for Wimberley flood victims, takes supplies BY NATALIE GENTRY Helping how and where she can. Kandice Jarvis, of Springtown spent last week gathering supplies to help people who have been affected by the massive flooding in Wimberley, Texas.
Jarvis, who hails from Corpus Christi, used her boutique “That’s so Fetch” as a dropoff point for supplies and then made the trek Saturday, May 30 to deliver them. “We had a good turnout this time, and I will probably do this again,” Jarvis said.
Wimberley, located in the Central Texas Hill Country, has been particularly affected by the recent flooding with a total of eight deaths so far; several people remain missing. Jarvis assisted with search efforts on Sunday, May 31. “I went to high school with

We can do that for you, because we are a full-service automotive shop. We also do oil changes, tune-ups, and air-conditioner repair. And we offer complete diagnostic services and emission repairs for state inspections – people have lots of questions about state inspections because requirements have changed; we can answer those questions. It's the season for ATVs and motorcycles; come in and let us service and do maintenance on your Fun Day vehicles. Need shipping services? Motley is still an authorized UPS shipping location. Most important: We are still in the business of trying to make our customers' lives easier and with less aggravation when your vehicle needs repair by still picking it up or dropping at off at customers' work or home. That way, you won't have to stay and wait because your time is valuable – unless you just want to hang out with us which is great, too! Nell’s family would like to thank the incredible staff at LaDora Nursing in Bedford for their loving care during Nell’s last few years, especially Tosha, Elizabeth, Corrine, and Jo. Nell was born May 17, 1913 in Calico Rock, Arkansas to the late Willie and Harold F. Heasley. Her early years were spent in Byers, Texas where she finished high school. During that eventful senior year, she attracted the attention of a handsome young cowboy who frequented her mother’s café. Nell and John (Glen Dalton) Lindsey were married in 1933. John later told the story that he wore out the elbows in his shirt sleeves, leaning on the café counter, staring at Sweet Nell as she waited on the customers. John passed away April 28, 1974, he and Nell having lived most of their married life in

Freak flag flyin’: I feel like I owe it to someone
I
t’s been eight months since I’ve had a haircut. I’m not trying to prove anything. At least initially. I just haven’t ventured to my stylist (which is what you have when your hair grows beyond the collar – you have a barber [or spouse], otherwise). So, since my hair is almost as long as it ever has been – back when I was in college in the mid-1970’s – I’m having hair issues that haven’t cropped up in decades. For one thing, it gets in my eyes. And, I’m getting tangles now. Much to the dismay of the Bride, I often drive with the truck window down (see photo at right). “It’ll ruin the headliner,” she preaches, and, sure enough, it’s separating a bit, something that started at about 300,000 miles. Today, I don’t just immediately
squirt shampoo on my head and commence scrubbing; there’s some smoothing, anti-tangling, and maybe even some conditioning to do first. Oh, sometimes I feel a little goofy, an almost 59-year-old grandpa with wild gray hair hanging down in his face. If I’m at church serving the Lord’s Supper down front before a few hundred folks – in line with 20 other deacons who are all short-haired and/or mostly bald – I feel a tad out of place. But I’m just making up for 19782003 when my jobs – meat truck driver, firefighter – forced me to have trimmed, regulated haircuts. The trick for me lately has been to avoid looking like that grody stringyhaired old fellow with a silver ponytail walking around Walmart. I’m the cool old fellow walking around Walmart.
A w h i l e back, it seemed time to get a haircut. But then q u e e r things began to happen: I started getting compliments – from ON YOUR MARK women Mark K. Campbell and men. “Wow, your hair is thick!” “You don’t even have a bald spot!” “If I could grow my hair like you,
I’d never cut it!” That last one – which I’ve heard more times than you’d imagine – always comes from balding guys, especially the comb-over fellows. Like many things in life, sometimes you don’t know when you’re fortunate; I was blessed with straight teeth and never needed any sort of braces. And my hair is still attached. It’s largely about vanity, of course. Hair is a surprisingly big deal to some guys. Oh, Michael Jordan made the shaved head cool and granted millions of men a degree of hipness. But there’s a reason why the Hair Club for Men infomercials are still running all these years later. Back in those ‘70’s as a freshman at UT-Austin, I went a year without a haircut. It got to the middle of my back, eventually – which my flattopped-for-35-years dad hated.
During that 1974-75 school year, I’d listen to KLBJ-FM, a station that would play anything. That included Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young’s 1970 LP Déjà Vu. On the mega-seller was a song called “Almost Cut My Hair.” Back then, it was a hippie anthem: Almost cut my hair/It happened just the other day/It’s getting’ kinda long/I coulda said it wasn’t in my way./But I didn’t and I wonder why/I feel like letting my freak flag fly/Cause I feel like I owe it to someone. So, today, I’m letting my freak flag fly for those guys who used to have their own freak flags but now only have ripped and torn pennants or dinky flapping ribbons. If that. I feel like I owe it to someone. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor, and he knows the Bride has the final say-so on his hair length, of course.

Why aren’t we saving all of this rainwater?
Water, lots of water. Not that long ago most of all of North Texas was bone dry, four years in the making. Within two months of off and on rain, the drought is now gone and what’s amazing is it continues to rain.
Dear Editor: Must say the poignant times we live in now days of what is offered to vote for as the leader of the country when we see the shenanigans by these politician candidates to grab the keys to Air Force One for eight years. Case in point: Hillary Clinton in her unsuccessful 2008 presidential bid for the presidency was seen in a black church making a complete fool of herself trying to morph into a black person’s dialect in her speech. She started out by saying and I'll quote in verbatim: “I don't feel no way tired, I come too faaar.” And the rest of the speech is just as silly. Fast forward to 2015 in the Palmetto State of South Carolina this past week. Once again our wannabe commander in chief gal “Hillary” was seen on TV media showing just what a complete phony she really is by changing speech inflections from her Chicago talk to a southern drawl. I kind of expected to see any minute a shot of Hillary jumping up and down with her bare feet, holding a skillet, and channeling Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. Well, at least she didn't pull a John Kerry moment into his presidential run some years back when he tried the same spurious goofiness in a photo op in geese hunting in the south, by saying in a southern drawl: “Where kin I git me a hunting license in these parts.” I suppose if there's a harbinger of things to come, next we'll see Hillary speaking in Chinatown to potential American-Asian voters in a pointy Where is all that run-off going? it’s going to go dry again. ather was a Baptist when we came to Kansas. Mother's folks were all Congregationalists, back in Maine, but Mother joined the Baptist Church in Topeka, Father being one of the founders of the First Baptist Church – which fact is attested by an inscription on one of the memorial windows of the structure, which was finished in 1895, or thereabouts. “The services were held at first in the old Baptist Hall, over Miller's Grocery Store – near the present Number 609 Kansas Avenue. We rode to church in the only vehicle possessed, a lumber wagon, with one spring seat in front, which was removable. The spring seat was reserved for Father, who drove, and for the women folks and company. “The boys sat farther back on plain boards – very hard ones – and without any “spring” that could be noticed.
average boy of those days, or of the present time. “The Sunday Schools were full of interest. My recollection is that the Congregational Sunday School was more inHISTORICAL teresting than our own. The HIGHLIGHTS music was good, and I Laurie Moseley always had a fondness for music. Mr. Platt led the singing with his violin. That was before they possessed an organ. Mr. Platt was one of the pioneer preachers, and everyone liked him. He married Nettie Ferry, whose sister, Mary, was one of my first teachers, in the old log
schoolhouse. “At the age of ten or twelve, I was ‘converted,’ and joined the Baptist church. I was baptized in a large tank that stood within the foundation walls of the stone church that was being built where the present structure now stands, on the corner of Jackson and Ninth Streets. “The first public school I attended was held in a log schoolhouse situated near the northwest corner of the Fitzpatrick homestead, being nearly two miles from our cabin home. There was no public road – in fact, no road of any kind – leading from our place to the schoolhouse. So Father plowed a furrow through the prairie to the schoolhouse. As the grass was high, this enabled us to avoid getting our clothing wet, when the grass was heavy with dew or rain – and enabled us to keep our bearings, as there was no house, fence or other landmark for the entire distance.

I do not apprehend that the services were calculated to give a normal boy any adequate impression of a living Christianity, or much of anything else. The sermons, as I recall them were devoted mainly to discussions of doctrinal questions. At any rate they failed to hold my attention very closely. “It may be that the cherry colored ribbons worn by certain young women with curls and other “vanities” were responsible for this lack of attention to heavenly matters. I cannot say, yet I will admit that the memory of those rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes cast a spell over my all too susceptible soul that will linger much longer than the spiritual food that was offered for my delectation. “This is a shameful confession for an old man to make, but I am putting down the things, as they were – and the thoughts that interested me as a boy. I suppose that I was no worse, and I am quite sure I was no better than the

“The house was built of rough logs, chinked up with sticks and mortar. Father was a member of the Board of District No. Eleven, and I have a copy of one of the first reports made to the County Superintendent. It is dated September 14, 1868. The district spent $98 in building a schoolhouse – the log house I have mentioned. The teacher, Miss Phebe Plummer, was paid $30 per month for teaching a three months school, commencing May 9 and ending August 15, 1862. My recollection is that she ‘boarded around,’ and I recall some confidential disclosures made by this prim Yankee school maam, regarding the housekeeping arrangements of certain school patrons that showed a lack of modern ideas relative to domestic science, hygiene, etc.” Laurie Moseley is an author, archeologist and historian who lives in Springtown. Legislature passes budget as session ends
F
our days before the June 1 end of the 84th regular session of the Texas Legislature, both houses finally agreed after months of deliberation on a state budget for fiscal years 2016 and 2017. A 10-member conference committee worked out differences between the House and Senate versions of the budget. The House vote on final adoption of House Bill 1 was 115 ayes to 33 nays; the Senate vote was 30-1. HB 1 awaits approval by Gov. Greg Abbott. House Speaker Joe Straus called the $209.4 billion budget “balanced and disciplined.” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who presides over the Senate, praised the budget and the $3.8 billion tax cut the conservative budget affords. The two biggest funding areas in the budget are $78 billion for education and $77 billion for health and human services. Straus posted comments, paraphrased here, on priorities HB 1 addresses: 1. Education – The budget pays for the addition of roughly 80,000 new students per year in the state’s overall public school enrollment. Also provided is an additional $1.5 billion for public education. More resources will go toward higher education, graduate medical education and TEXAS Grants, the state’s signature financial aid program. 2. Transportation – Reversing a decades-old practice, all of the money in the State Highway Fund must be used for transportation. Diversion of some of those dollars for other programs will not be allowed. The transportation budget is augmented by oil-and-gas tax revenues through a constitutional amendment approved by voters in November 2014. 3. Transparency – Taxes and fees must be used only for their intended purpose. 4. Border Security – Some $840 million of the budget will be used for the implementation of HB 11, the border security
What to do with criticism
Y
ou never should have been called as pastor of this church.” Those words were spoken to me over 20 years ago, but they still sting when I think about one of the most painful conversations I had in my 20 years as a pastor. In my current ministry consulting, coaching, and supporting pastors and churches, I have heard reports of variations on that theme more often than I would like to acknowledge. Here’s a true statement that you can write down and take to the bank: No matter what your vocation is, you WILL BE criticized at some point. I shared a quote last week from Mason Cooley: “We are prepared for insults, but compliments leave us baffled.” I think the meaning of that is that we expect to be insulted, not complimented. The reality of insults (or criticism) is what we are prepared for. But how to respond to them? Well, that’s another story. So, what do we do with insults or criticism? Let me offer a few suggestions that have proven helpful to me over the years: Consider the source – I have been criticized by professional,
worldclass, i f therewerea-PhDin-criticismtheywouldhave-it critics. Y o u LIFE MATTERS p r o b a b l y Gerry Lewis k n o w some of them. They consider it their duty to point out everything that is wrong in the world. They tend to be unhappy joy suckers who can’t stand it if everyone is not as miserable as they are. Their words sting, but don’t take it personally. However, if the criticism comes from a generally joyful person who is typically on your side, then you may want to pay more attention. Acknowledge the truth – No matter the source, something was the trigger for this particular criticism. My critics have never been 100 percent wrong. There is always room for growth. There is always an opportunity to learn. In fact, compliments have never moti-
vated me to learn anything new. Even our biggest fans only help us grow when they challenge us. Avoid isolation – It is a bad idea to keep it to yourself. You’ll stew in it. You’ll go over it in your mind and think of all the things you wish you had said in response. You’ll believe too much or too little of it. And you will risk becoming bitter. I believe that everyone needs a small group of close friends who can help us process criticisms. I’m not talking about a group of blindly loyal fans. I’m talking about people who can help us with perspective. Ideally this group is getting together regularly to help one another grow and develop the kind of character we want to demonstrate in life. Model right behavior – Don’t respond in kind. Be the kind of person you want to be around. As Jesus said, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” (Matthew 7:12) Our lives matter to God. May our responses to criticism speak louder than the words of our critics. Movie Man
Thursday, June 4, 2015 Springtown Epigraph
San Andreas shakes out disaster movie cliches Theses days, disaster movies show up occasionally. Some hit, some miss. But the heyday of the genre was back in the 1970’s when the template was set. About the film The granddaddy of disaster movies is The Poseidon Adventure (1972). (Well, the first great disaster movie was When Worlds Collide in 1951, but the genre really arrived during America’s greatest movie decade, the 1970’s.) People – including Movie Teen – poured into theaters to marvel at the giant cruise liner Poseidon turning upside down. Before that happened, characters played by famous stars like Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, and Shelly Winters (who got an Oscar nomination) were introduced then forced to survive together. The best disaster movie of all-time remains The Towering Inferno in 1974. It had bona fide stars – Steve McQueen and Paul Newman – as well as super effects. There were so many characters that, for years, the running joke about the movie was what happened to O.J. Simpson (yes, O.J. Simpson)? He was a major part of the movie early on then disappears until the very end – carrying a cat! The third memorable movie from the disaster film’s Golden Age was Earthquake also from 1974. The Movie Man queued up quite a while to finally get a ticket. (In those days, it wasn’t unusual to stand in line for hours outside a theater before entry.) Earthquake was not only a disaster movie, but one with a unique gimmick, Sensurround. The movie isn’t very good, really, but having Sensurround made all the difference. After the build-up to the quake – that included a few short shakes, early – when the real deal came along, the theater and your seat literally shook from a relentless series of low frequency rumbles from speakers set up strategically around the audito-
rium. It was a blast! Only a few more movies with the process were released; it was too expensive for theaters to use often. Midway (1976) was good then came the misfire Rollercoaster (1977). Sensurround went away after being used in the theatrical premier of TV’s first go-round with Battlestar Galactica (1978), Saga of a Star World. The plot Ray (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) is a Los Angeles Fire Department rescue helicopter pilot. His daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) is bound for college. They meet Johnson’s wife Emma (Carla Gugino) who is soon to divorce Johnson and marry Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd). Meanwhile, brainy Professor Lawrence (Paul Giamatti) and his team have finally figured out how to predict earthquakes – their final proof coming from evidence gained when a massive tremor destroys the Hoover Dam in Nevada. Soon, The Rock is pressed into hero service as a monster quake heads up the West Coast toward San Francisco. He saves Gugino then they venture to San Fran to fetch the imperiled Daddario. Along the way are fissures, falling skyscrapers, and a big honkin’ tsunami.

What works (spoiler) The Movie Man has a man crush on Johnson. He looks like a hero and his witty banter is flat-out fun. He’s a movie star. Giamatti is another guy who never seems to do anything wrong. He spews his scholarly babble effortlessly. The opening scene made the Movie Man think there might be more to San Andreas. A young lady drives on a windy California mountain road. She reaches for her phone and music, taking her eyes off the road, and you’re fooled into thinking that she’s about to crash into approaching cars. But that doesn’t happen. Instead, she’s creamed by a rockslide that knocks her off a cliff. That’s where The

Decades of loving service Eagle Crest Villa director Dorothy Cherryhomes retires BY MISTY SHAW For the last four decades, local resident Dorothy Cherryhomes has worked in the same little corner of town. “I’ve been coming down the same street to work for 45 years,” Cherryhomes said. She’s been the director at Azle’s assisted living facility -- Eagle Crest Villa -- since the doors opened there in June of 1998. Before that, she worked at a clinic across the street. But now, after many years of dedicated service to others, Cherryhomes says she is ready for the next phase of her life, having retired from Eagle Crest Villa last week. “I’m 77 years old, and there just comes a time when you need a change,” she said. “I’m going to miss it – I’m going to miss it dreadfully.”
little easier for them to make the transition from home,” she said. A home away from home Since then, Cherryhomes and her staff have worked hard to improve the lives of Eagle Crest’s residents. “It’s been fun to watch this change and grow – we kind of learned along with the residents,” Cherryhomes recalls. “My main objective was for this to be a home, and not just in their apartments, but when they come in the front door, that this whole facility is home, and they feel the love of it being a home.” Eagle Crest Villa is the only assisted living facility of its size in this area, housing residents from as close as Springtown and as far as Michigan. “It’s been pleasurable, and it’s been a challenge,” Cher-

New beginnings Cherryhomes and her husband, Paul, "have lived here in Azle for 44 years, in the same house,” where they moved from Graham in 1970. At that time, Cherryhomes began working as the office manager for a local doctor’s clinic, a position she held for 28 years until the practice was sold. Fortunately, plans were already in place to open Eagle Crest Villa across the street, so Cherryhomes decided to apply there. Thank You Eagle Crest Villa, Staff and Residents for making my retirement a time of celebration. You made a sad time one of fun and love. I appreciate all of the friends and family members of present and past who attended. All the Eagle Crest family became my extended family and I love each and every one. I want to thank the Montgomery family for giving me the opportunity to work in an environment that allowed me to make Eagle Crest a home built with love for the people who chose to live there. A very special thank you to the wonderful people who are the staff who have worked so hard and been so supportive through the years. I appreciate each of you more than I am able to express. I also want to thank my own family for sharing my time and love with my Eagle Crest family with their love and support. God Bless Heather Holman as she becomes the Administrator of this wonderful facility. She will keep Eagle Crest a loving home for it’s residents and future residents. With respect and love, Dorothy Cherryhomes
