Aid available for residents with storm damage City filing for disaster money to pay for repairs BY NATALIE GENTRY Officials in Springtown and surrounding areas have been busy working on repairs to infrastructure systems caused by last month’s flooding rains. Springtown City Administrator Doug Hughes has contacted a professional engineer to examine sites where leaks were caused by flood waters. Parker proclaimed a disaster area Parker County was added to an Emergency Disaster Proclamation last month by Governor Greg Abbott. “I authorize the use of all available resources of state government and of political subdivisions that are reasonably necessary to cope with this disaster,” Abbott said in the proclamation.

Private wells affect groundwater Registering helps protect subterranean resource by mark k. campbell “You can only get so much water from the glass when you have a bunch of straws in it.” That’s what Doug Shaw, manager of the Upper Trinity Groundwater Conservation district, told Springtown Optimists June 9. He is encouraging private well owners to register with the UTGCD. Do-

ing so will allow the district to determine the well’s exact location via GPS and help the UTGCD enforce any rule violations. Well owners must meet a trio of requirements: • have 2 acres • drill 50 feet from neighboring property lines • be 100 feet away from the nearest

well With these guidelines, a well owner can protect his well from being “sponged” on by another, creating a “cone of depression,” Shaw said. He added, “We can see where you are on a map so no one else drills near you.” The UTGCD is one of 98 such districts across the state; they originated

in the 1950’s. A yes from 73 percent of voters in Wise, Montague, Hood, and Parker counties created the UTGCD, approving a fee-based – not tax-based – system. Shaw said eastern Parker County has much more water than the western part. Bike rally attracts record numbers The All-American Bike Rally No. 6 – an annual Springtown Chamber of Commerce fundraiser – enjoyed its biggest success ever. With 276 entrants, cyclists of all ages came to Springtown for the ride; that’s more than 100 over the previous highest tally. Many riders walked up before the 8 a.m. start and registered, pinned on bib numbers, and mounted bikes for distances of 28, 54, 74, and the new family-friendly ride of 6 miles. The All-American Bike Rally is part of a three-tiered event, along with the Peach Pedal in Weatherford on July 11 and the Granbury Blazin’ Saddles 75 on Aug. 1. The Parker County Young Marines posted the colors then the bikers took off in waves – biking through the county’s rolling countryside.

Hughes said the city is preparing to submit repair costs to Parker County. “By the end of the week we should have preliminary cost figures for the repair of damage caused by the floods.” Hughes said. “These figures will be forwarded to the county so it can request federal disaster relief funds.” These cost figures will include totals for debris removal, repairs to water lines, repairs to the waste water line spanning Walnut Creek, and a new air conditioner at the booster repair station. Hughes said that the unit quit working during one of the storms. The new air conditioner is needed to keep the electrical controls cool at the booster pump. FEMA expands disaster area Springtown area residents who live in Wise County may now apply for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The federal disaster declaration has been expanded to include individual assistance for 21 counties as a result of the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding area wide last month. According to the FEMA website, assistance for homeowners and renters may include grants to help pay for rent, temporary housing, and home repairs, as well as other serious disaster-

Acid reflux disease or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition of the stomach. Acid reflux occurs when the amount of stomach acid that flows back into your food pipe (esophagus) exceeds the normal limit. The acid irritates the lining of a person’s esophagus, leading to vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and possibly a burning chest pain called heartburn. Some people may experience a feeling of food being stuck in their throats, sore throat, nausea, and bloating. When these signs and symptoms occur at least twice a week, or interrupt daily life, or when a physician can see damage to the esophagus, GERD may be diagnosed. One of the most effective ways to treat acid reflux disease is to make lifestyle changes. Avoiding foods and beverages that trigger symptoms, eating smaller meals, losing weight, and not smoking are several steps people can take to help manage the disease. Another effective way to treat acid reflux disease is to control the flow of stomach acid through the use of medicine such as antacids (with both magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide), histamine blockers (Pepcid, Zantac), and proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Protonix). It is important to refrain from combining more than one type of antacid or other medications without the physician’s guidance.

Eagle Mountain, Shady Grove Park open again High water levels had forced closures BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

It’s not often in North Texas that people get excited about how many days we’ve gone without rain. We’re usually complaining that it’s been too long – especially in the summer months. And, we may get back to that point, but for now, North Texans are rejoicing about sunshine and full lakes. May 2015 was the wettest month on record for the contiguous 48 states since records began being kept in 1895, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). An average of 4.36 inches of rain and/or snow fell across the lower 48 states. Most of it was concentrated in Oklahoma and Texas, where, as one NOAA spokesperson said, the five-year drought was washed away in one month. “It’s like one disaster ending a catastrophe,” NOAA climate

scientist Jake Crouch said. Around Eagle Mountain Lake, water enthusiasts and lake-livers went from dismay at the idea of another lakeless summer, to excitement when the lake filled, back to dismay that the lake was closed due to high water, flooding, and floating debris. But Tuesday, June 9, EML was reopened to boat traffic by Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD). Azle’s Shady Grove Park is open again, as well. TRWD officials urge caution on the lake as debris – both visible and underwater – remains a danger. Interesting facts Laura Blaylock, manager of energy and water resources for TRWD, provided some fascinating facts about how the recent rains have affected Eagle Mountain Lake. Blaylock notes that her calcu-

About 21,838 acre feet of water was pumped into the lake before rains made pumping no longer necessary. • Meanwhile, upstream at Lake Bridgeport, 24.05 inches of rain has fallen since Jan. 1. Again, about half that amount fell in May. Lake Bridgeport rose more than 27 feet thanks to rainfall in its watershed. • As a result of being overfull, Lake Bridgeport has discharged 165,592 acre feet of water through June 7. That water runs through the West Fork Trinity River into EML. • Total inflows into EML from the West Fork watershed are recorded at 404,996 acre feet (more than 132 billion gallons) and represent a combination of the rain that fell directly on the lake, discharges from Lake Bridgeport and Amon Carter Lake, as well as the whole surrounding watershed since May 11. • All that water has to go somewhere; EML has discharged 337,719 acre feet (more than 110 billion gallons) of water into Lake Worth through June 7. Keep up with what’s going on at Eagle Mountain Lake as well as other lakes in TRWD’s system at www.trwd.com.

Sympathy for the aging concert-goer – the Stones

W

hen you’re almost 59, you can look back and see that you were actually positioned to do some cool

stuff, but you didn’t. I was in film school at UT-Austin in the 1970’s – America’s greatest movie decade – but changed my major to journalism. I saw the rise of computers but invested most of my cash in Whataburgers and softball gloves. And I was young – 20’s/30’s – during a dynamic time of popular music on the planet. Yet, I almost never went to a concert. So, a zillion years later, here in 2015 I’m trying to make up for what I missed musically and am attending a slew of concerts. Recently, I’ve taken in Alice Coo-

per, Heart, the Who, Boz Scaggs, and, the Rolling Stones. Naturally, all these folks are a bit older and less-peppy – for the most part – than they would’ve been in their heyday of the 1970’s. I got tired of hearing old-timers say “you shoulda been there” when recanting their past concert experiences. I was determined to not die before I got to see bands that I have listened to for half a century. There are plenty of tales about those other concerts – Cooper was hilarious; Heart’s Ann Wilson still has it; the Who was absolutely incredible; and it took Scaggs forever to get to “Lido Shuffle” – but, as predicted, the Stones concert was a bona fide event. This was my first stadium concert. I bought a ticket on the day of the show and paid a tad less than face value. Armed with a parking pass, I made

the grave mistake of driving to the east side of AT&T Stadium instead of the west side where my $43 parking spot awaited – about a mile from AT&T Stadium. ON YOUR (Fortunately, I had left MARK early because the Bride was Mark K. Campbell out of town on a church mission trip. [Yes, I get the irony that I was watching “Sympathy for the Devil” while my beloved was off doing the Lord’s work.]) After a sweaty, painful hike – I had hurt my calf running – I got inside the

massive building. Jerry’s Giant TV was turned off; I was glad I bought a seat that faced the stage head on. An incredible array of fans began arriving. Some had on old Stones concert shirts. Others dressed elaborately, including a 70-plus couple that was donned in long Union Jacks. Next to me were some thirtysomethings from Austin and on the other side a single 60-year-old woman from University Park. Right ahead were a grandfather, dad, and son – a triple generationsharing event that all would remember forever. The Stones came on about 9:20. By then, 60,000 people had found their seats. The classic songs piled on each other while Mick Jagger – at 71! – ran everywhere and a pair of Cryptkeepers – Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – played really loudly and fantastically.

The sound is horrible at AT&T, and, combined with the screaming guitars, it was sometimes hard to hear which time travel tune was being played, initially. The final songs were colossal. “Sympathy for the Devil” had the UTA choir behind it and onscreen visuals. I thought “Gimme Shelter” was the standout. And everyone got chills singing along with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” – released 50 years ago that very day, June 6, 1965. Old people danced like they didn’t care who saw – because...they didn’t. A concert is much more than just the music, of course. And that was proven by the Stones: no, I wasn’t there in 1975 – but I was 40 years later. And it was still cool. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor and could not part with $80 for a t-shirt.

It may be quicker and more efficient to do it yourself, but it is more effective to empower others. 3. Make yourself IN-visible. You know your effectiveness as a leader when success may be accomplished without your presence, when recognition goes to your team, when those you have taught advance beyond your abilities. 2 Timothy 2:2 says, “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” Our lives matter so much to God that He wants us involved IN His eternal purposes. he school teacher was Miss Phebe Plummer. “It was my good fortune to receive instruction from Miss Plummer for several terms. She was a native of Maine, and a very dear friend of our family, where she usually made her home, when she was not boarding around. “I have one of her term reports, in her own handwriting. It shows that 20 children were enrolled in school during the term. But one pupil is reported as studying grammar. I think that one must have been Dinsmore Fitzpatrick, as his mother was very ambitious, and insisted on his pursuing a very extended course in algebra, natural philosophy, and other academic branches, which might have been deferred until he had mastered the common English branches. However he made good, and was a successful teacher, politi-

paid $16 per month and board. Miss Frink was paid $28 per month and she boarded herself. This was in 1865. “Capt. W.H. Fitzpatrick had returned HISTORICAL from the war was then HIGHLIGHTS and clerk of the Laurie Moseley school district. He afterward represented our legislative district in the Kansas Legislature, and was also registar of the U.S. Land Office at Topeka. He and his wife were always in favor of good schools, and were ready to make any sacrifices for the benefit of their own or their

neighbor’s children. “Another teacher, later on, of which I have a distinct, and very pleasant recollection was Emma Campbell. She was the daughter of an old friend of ours, Mrs. Frank Campbell, who lived in the west part of town, and had a hard struggle to “make both ends meet.” Emma introduced some innovations in the way of teaching that were very popular with the children. “One of her plans was to write a letter to each of the older pupils, requiring them to answer it. To me this was a delightful task, and I always enjoyed letter writing in after years. Miss Campbell married T.J. Hudson, of Fredonia, Kansas, who served a term in Congress during the days when “Populism” was in the ascendancy in this state. “I well remember George Gabrial, another teacher of Log schoolhouse days. The copies were set in the beautiful “Spencerian” hand of Phebe Plummer. “This school was taught afterward by Mary Ferry, Imogene Frink, and Sarah Keyes. Miss Keyes was

That winter I saw, for the first time, some real Confederate soldiers. They had been taken prisoner, and had been paroled. They enlisted in the regular army for Indian service. Porcupines qualify for state 7-on-7 tourney by mark k. campbell After a one-year hiatus, the Porcupine football team has qualified for the state 7-on-7 football tournament in Division II. Springtown earned the berth by reaching the finals – with Sweetwater – in a qualifying tourney at Brock June 6. The performance will send the Porcupines to College Station July 9-10. In 2013, Springtown turned in its best performance ever in 7-on-7 competition, reaching the Sweet 16 when the tourney was moved to Leander, near Austin. Each day was over 100 degrees. The Porcupines will have plenty of time to get ready for the Division II bracket competition before heading to the Texas A&M campus.

Two more tournament qualifiers await. Springtown will compete at Celina June 13 and at Boyd June 20. The Porcupines are in the midst of a league in Brewer on Thursdays; 6 p.m. games remain June 11, 18, and 25. Already SHS has played in a Wise County league and in a Wichita Falls qualifier. At the state tourney, Springtown will be pared with other 4A-and-under schools in pool play. In 7-on-7 play, a quarterback has four seconds to pass the ball. Any time a receiver is touched by one or two hands, he is down. Games are two 20-minute halves with no time outs.
