BY NATALIE GENTRY Owner and pharmacist of Springtown Drugs, Al Garrett is retiring. “I’ve practiced pharmacy for 45 years, and I’ve fi nally fi gured it out so it’s time to retire,” he said with a smile. Garrett, his wife Jan, and their children moved to Springtown in 1980. “I had known Ralph Hill, who started the pharmacy in 1977, through work at Hurst Town and Country Drugs,” Garrett said. “He called me in 1978 and asked me to work some Saturdays for him in Springtown.” Garret agreed and on that fi rst Saturday he fi lled a whopping four prescriptions in four hours. “When [Hill] called me and said ‘when this pharmacy takes off I would really like for you and Jan to come out here and work for me,’ I thought to myself this store won’t ever take off,” he continued. But in 1980 Hill called Garrett and offered him the job. “Well, Jan and I talked it over and since we had both grown up in small towns we decided to move so our kids could grow up in a small town like we PLEASE SEE GARRETT, PAGE 2A.

did,” Garrett said. “So we moved out here and I made Ralph [Hill] promise me that he would eventually sell me the store.” So, on Sept. 1, 1983, Hill sold the pharmacy to the Garretts. “Jan was a great part of Springtown Drugs,” Garrett said. “She and I both worked the case for 25 years before she retired and I couldn’t have done this without her.” He also noted that she is happy now that he is joining her in retirement. “It’s just been a great town and of course we’re not going anywhere – Springtown is our home,” he said. “I’ll still be active in the community. “We’ve owned it for 32 years now and we’re very happy to pass the torch to Andy [Komuves] and his company,” Garrett continued. “The great thing about this is that the store is still going to be an independent, full-service, community pharmacy. “Springtown needs that – they always have.” Garrett noted there is a sense of security in the familiar.
“People here have always loved the service that they get here,” he said. “We have employees with us who have been here as long as 18 years. “Everyone knows Tommy and Cyndi very well now,” Garrett continued. “It’s important that they will still see the faces here they are used to. “Jan and I want to sincerely thank our many friends and customers who have remained loyal all these years in allowing us to serve them in our pharmacy,” Garrett said. “We also want to extend a special thanks to our employees, past and present, who have helped us build the business. “We’ve always wanted customer service to be the most important thing and it will continue to be so,” he continued. “The new owners share this commitment to Springtown.” Different name, same values Komuves, the Dougherty's Pharmacy representative who has been working with Garrett, said that the company wants to maintain the integrity of Springtown Drugs despite the change in ownership. “One of the things that at-

According to a press release, Dougherty's Pharmacy has been the premier pharmacy in Dallas since 1929, offering a

wide variety of products and services to customers, including prescriptions, compounds, durable medical equipment, nutritional products, diabetic supplies, and a host of other health and wellness products and services. “There are a lot of pharmacy owners, like Al who are look-
ing for an exit strategy that will keep the store independent and committed to the community,” Komuves said. “We believe that independent community pharmacies are viable and thriving and are needed. “Our company has been looking for pharmacies to purchase under the Dougherty banner.”
Dougherty’s Pharmacies seems to think there are great things in store for the Springtown location. According to a company press release, the acquisition of Springtown Drugs is expected to add approximately $1.3 million in revenues to the company’s 2015 results and $4 million in annual revenues on a full year basis. There will be some physical changes to the pharmacy. “After all the licensing changes, probably around the fi rst of the year, the name will change to Dougherty’s Pharmacy, because we feel that at some point there will be some name recognition,” Komuves said. “Until a year ago we only had two stores and now we have six, including ones in Dallas, El Paso, McAlester, Oklahoma, and now Springtown. “We certainly want to keep offering the same services that Springtown Drugs has offered, although, hopefully, we can add some new things such as offering immunizations and compounding. “Everything that people have enjoyed about Springtown Drugs will still be here.” The Garretts would have it no other way.

Owners repurposing the house on Pojo Drive? It’s the SISD BY NATALIE GENTRY A little white brick house sits unassumingly at 555 Pojo Drive. However, this summer the landlord spruced up the building for its next possible tenant. And just who is the owner of this little home you may ask? The answer might surprise you. The home at 555 Pojo Drive is owned by Springtown ISD. The property was purchased prior to the construction of the Student Events Complex. “As I understand it, there was an effort to purchase all the property west of Northgate all the way to Pojo Drive,” said SISD Superintendent Mike Kelley. “Apparently two property owners declined offers, but the district did purchase the home at 555 Pojo Drive. “When I became aware of the fact that the district owned the home, we began discussing whether renovating and then leasing the property would be fiscally appropriate.” As the district maintenance staff includes electricians, HVAC repairmen, and a few individuals skilled in carpentry, Kelley said it made sense to have them renovate the property during “down time” when opportunities presented themselves. “Over the course of several

Campbell months, our crew has done a terrific job of restoring the home,” Kelley said. “Our plan is to lease the property to a member of our maintenance department, who will then be very available to respond to after-hours calls for assistance at one of our campuses.” Kelley said the convenience of having a member of the maintenance department in such close proximity to four of the six campuses is significant. “The property is not expected to become a significant revenue stream for the district, but there are logical and obvious reasons for taking the steps we’ve taken with the property,” he said.

OPINION Thursday, September 3, 2015
EDITORIAL
www.springtown-epigraph.net
I wanna hold your hand
These cop shootings need to stop now People have different opinions about law enforcement officers. Some admire them. Some feel harassed. Some are frightened. Some have family histories of serving. But no one wants them shot dead. Sadly, that’s what’s happening in our country right now; law officers are brave to begin with – now that fortitude is being tested everywhere as their ranks get attacked. The recent killing of Harris County Deputy Sheriff Darren Goforth was made even more heinous by the cowardliness of the attack; he was shot 15 times, from behind. I was a firefighter and we always appreciated having cops around. They had our backs, watching out for us while we were otherwise occupied. That probably makes me biased. I always liked having an officer around. And still do. But people are different. My daughters both married guys that, they say, while driving get stopped for no reason. One daughter’s husband has long hair and the other’s is Latino. Both daughters distrust police – the exact opposite of me. They have seen what they perceive as “harassment” first hand; I have not. However, everyone agrees that law enforcement officers getting shot and killed is beyond unacceptable. Often “the war on...” is overused. Politicians trumpet the “war on women” and preachers bellow about “the war on the church.” Those are certainly debatable; what is without question is that, yes, there is a “war on cops” right now. A Texas officer was quoted addressing “a dangerous national rhetoric out there today that has gotten out of control.” Part of that is fueled by social media. In July, I wrote an editorial praising social media; locally, a group of residents responded rapidly to honor an injured soldier returning home. But this is the ugly side of social media. Opinions can incite action when they are posted then fanned like flames, racing all over the planet. Instead of just riling up people in your neighborhood, now you can present your beliefs and reach millions instantly. Law enforcement death numbers, overall, are not very different from recent years. But this sudden rise frightening. There’s a perception by some in America right now that the police might not be the “good guys” anymore. I don’t believe that. We heard the same thing about returning Vietnam vets, how they were “baby killers”; it was untrue, of course. So, what to do for our law enforcement personnel? Rise up for the good guys. Thank a cop today. Give them a shout out online. Believe me, no matter how you feel about them, you will be mighty glad to see them show up when you need help. MKC
W
hen my brain starts down a trail, I never know where it will end up. Sometimes that’s a good thing. Sometimes, not so much. Often, that mental journey contains some unexpected turns and forks in the road. Kind of like this column. My journey of imagination after reading the closing verse of the book of Hosea, which I will share later. I traveled from there to an old Southern Gospel Song that my friend Gerre Joiner sang a couple of weeks ago at the First Baptist Church in Decatur: I Can’t Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand. From there, my mind continued on to a trip to the Grand Canyon in 2001 when I took my kids, then 13 and 10, on a two-day hike to the bottom and back. I remembered how many people along the trail marveled at these two youngsters with their backpacks and ski pole walking sticks on this 20-mile round trip in one of the most amazing locales on God’s creation. My kids were – still are, and always will be – amazing. But they were able
to make that trip with confidence because they knew Dad would get them there and back. They knew I’d help them over the rough spots. They knew I would carry the extra weight. They LIFE MATTERS knew I would give them my Gerry Lewis water if they ran out. They knew they could hold my hand in any precarious spots. They knew that, if we stayed on the trail and kept going up, we would eventually get to the top. And they knew that there was no way I would leave them alone. After a little reminiscence about that great experience and reflecting on how much I loved for my kids to want to hold my hand, I thought about the song that inspired the title of today’s post. I Want to Hold Your Hand was recorded by the Beatles in 1963.
It was their second million-selling record, their all-time No. 1, and was listed in 2013 – yes, 50 years later – as the 44th biggest hit of “all-time” on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. When I think about the explicit lyrics of today, there is something refreshing about a sappy and carefree song where a boy says to a girl nothing more suggestive than, “I want to hold your hand.” Now, let me travel full circle. Hosea 13:9 says, “The ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.” You and I are often guilty of complaining about how rough the path of life is. We sometimes want to blame our circumstances for our failures. Notice in the verse that the “ways” of the Lord are right. Some walk and some stumble. The difference is not the circumstances, but the travelers. Could it be that the “righteous” can walk because we know Whose hand to hold and we know that our lives matter to Him? Azle resident Dr. Gerry Lewis is director of missions for the Harvest Baptist Association, which is headquartered in Decatur. He writes a blog at www.drerrylewis.com.

The namesake of Parker County, Isaac Parker, Part 2: The return of Cynthia Ann Parker after 24 years
A
t Fort Worth’s Log Cabin Village, is the home of Isaac Parker. It was built about 1848 and is thought to be the oldest structure in the county, older even than the barn of Lemuel Edwards or the cottage of Khleber Miller Van Zandt. The log house, measuring 20 by 40 feet, seems hardly big enough to contain all the history it has known. Eventually Isaac Parker traded smoke-filled battlefields for smokefilled rooms: The soldier became a politician. He was a representative and senator in the legislature of the Republic of Texas from 1838 until 1845. Upon annexation in 1845, he was a delegate to the state constitutional. Parker then was a senator in the state legislature (1846-1853). In 1853, Parker bought from Hamil-
he introduced the bill to establish Parker County, which was named for him. According to historian Julia Kathryn Garrett, Parker also authored the law HISTORICAL that allowed HIGHLIGHTS residents of a county to Laurie Moseley relocate the county seat by a two-thirds vote instead of a majority vote. This law would come back to bite Parker’s Birdville. As Parker grew more prosperous, he added on to the log house until its exterior was covered by milled lumber. On December 18, 1860, 24 years af-
ter her abduction, Parker’s niece Cynthia Ann was “freed” from Peta Nocona’s tribe by Texas Ranger Captain Sul Ross (Lawrence Sullivan Ross) at the Battle of Pease River. Ross suspected that the blue-eyed woman was Cynthia Ann Parker, but he was not certain. In January, 1861, Isaac Parker, by then 67, went to Fort Cooper in Throckmorton County to identify his niece, whom he had not seen since the attack on their family. Uncle and niece did not recognize each other, did not have a common language. According to one story, Captain Ross (who would be elected governor in 1886) asked Parker to note Cynthia Ann’s reaction as Ross called out her name in a high-pitched voice to imitate what Cynthia Ann would have heard from her mother 24 years earlier. Cynthia Ann is said to have smiled and tapped her chest

ton Bennett land east of Birdville, located about where East Loop 820 and Hurst Boulevard intersect. He moved his family into the log house, which Bennett had built about 1848. In this log house lawmaker Parker read and wrote legislation. In 1895, the Parker log cabin was owned by son Isaac Duke Parker. In 1927 Star-Telegram publisher Amon Carter Sr. bought Parker’s house, moved it to his ranch, and had the building restored to its original condition. The house is a dogtrot: Cooking/ dining area and living/sleeping area are under a common roof but separated by a center breezeway. After Carter died, his foundation donated the log house to the city, and it was moved and reassembled at Log Cabin Village. From 1855 to 1856 Parker, while living in Birdville, represented Ellis and Tarrant counties in the House, where

in recognition. Parker took his niece to his home in Birdville, home to his family’s log house. He later took her to Austin, where he got a state bill passed to grant his niece a pension of $100 a year and a league (4,400 acres) of land. Cynthia Ann lived with her uncle for two years. But for Cynthia Ann Parker, repatriation with her white family did not compensate for removal from her Indian family and, in 1864, the death of her daughter, Prairie Flower. Cynthia Ann Parker, heartbroken, is said to have starved herself to death. She died in 1870 at age 42. She is buried in Fort Sill next to her son, Comanche chief Quanah Parker.

Bring on the hurricanes!
T
he day we fi nalized our trip to Hawaii to celebrate 40 years of wedded bliss, a trio of hurricanes immediately made a beeline for the islands. I don’t really buy into global warming ideology. The American coastlines were supposed to be under 10 feet of water years ago and polar bears should have migrated to ON YOUR Kansas by now. Certainly, we aren’t helping the MARK environment by spewing industrial funk into the air. However, I’m not Mark K. Campbell so sure that my asthma inhaler was the cause of a rise in Tibetan temperatures, but the swapping out of a new propellent did make my albuterol rise in price from $5 to $30. So, there’s that. Anyway, the Pacifi c Ocean is churning right now – whether from asthmatics or Hummer exhaust is irrelevant concerning my vacation for which, of course, I did not buy insurance to protect. The Bride and I like Hawaii, mainly Kauai. We just hope it’s still there come October if hurricanes keep zeroing in. At one time, there were three storms in the ocean: Ignacio, Jimena, and Kilo – all Category 4s. That’s the second worst category and can cause “catastrophic damage” which are words almost no one wants to hear on vacation. Actually, according to the Internet – which can’t possibly be wrong – the ‘K’ storm could’ve been named Kevin. I can’t imagine something destructive being named Kevin. Heck, it’s one of the Minions. However, Kilo topped Kevin because names are chosen based on whether storms are Eastern North Pacific or Central North Pacific. So, the next storm will either be Linda (EN Pacifi c) or Loke (CN Pacifi c). I once knew a Linda who was mean, but I’m really worried about Loke which is far to close to Loki, Thor’s evil brother. If Loke/Loki threatens, I’m gonna check on that insurance. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor and is also a tad concerned about the possibility of a “Marty.”

Decatur rallies to reel in Springtown, 40-29 by mark k. campbell Things began great for the Porcupines in the season opening football game at Decatur Aug. 28. Even into the third quarter, Springtown (0-1) led the host Eagles. But the tide turned and Decatur rallied to beat SHS 40-29. Coach Brian Hulett said, “We played well, especially for two and a half quarters. But we all know they play four quarters.” After Austin Bauman grabbed a batted ball and raced 60 yards for a touchdown in the third period, the seven points would be Springtown’s last for the evening. The Porcupines zoomed out of the blocks early on. Converting on a pair of third down passes that saved the opening drive, quarterback Kaleb Chesney eventually found Mateo Herrera for a 10-yard TD. Wriley Russell bulled over and SHS led 8-0. Decatur, on third-and-21, answered with a 71-yard screen pass to draw to within 8-7. The Porcupines then drove all the way to the Eagle 8 but could not convert fourth-and-2. However, on the first Decatur you can’t get more wide open than this. porcupine a ustin b auman has no e agles anywhere around him as he play, Fisher Drewry scooped hauls in a pass from SHS Qb k aleb c hesney and moseys in for a TD at Decatur. The Warriors are a highly thought of private school, but Celina beat Argyle Liberty Christian 35-20 in the 2015 opener. The Warriors were shut out in the first half. QB Nick Starkel, 6-4, 195, threw for 3 TDs to a different trio of receivers, all in the second half. Running backs Kyleb Howell (10-43) and Ryan Vollenhals (11-28) had trouble running the ball. Springtown has never defeated the Warriors, having lost the last three years in a row to ALCHS.

to 5As Brewer and Saginaw Chisholm Trail in two home matches. Against the Lady Bears on Aug. 28, Brewer took all three games. Gabby Terry turned in a solid match with 12 kills, a number that led SHS. Ashton Weaver added 11 kills and shared blocking honors with Jordan Babcock and Brittany Stroud with 1.5. Khloe Smith’s three aces paced Springtown. On Sept. 1, Chisholm Trail beat the Lady Porcupines 3-1 – 18-25, 13-25, 25-17, 16-25. Weaver continued her role as Springtown’s primary killer; she smacked down 13 against the Lady Rangers. Terry added 8 as SHS killed 30 in the match. Eight different Lady Porcupines dug out balls, including 12 by Karrah Cooper and 11 by Sydney Farris, who also paced Springtown with 18 assists.
up a fumble and ran to paydirt from 3 yards out. The hosts scored before the quarter ended, a period that saw 27 points tallied with SHS ahead 14-13. Bauman, wide open, caught a 25-yard TD pass then Russell ran over the PAT again. The half ended with Springtown ahead 22-13. The Eagles got closer as the third period began, but that was followed by Bauman’s batted TD reception. However, that would be all the scoring for SHS while Decatur’s bruising back Payton McAlister got three of DHS’ four second half TDs. Coach Hulett said, “Our Friday night experience showed – which was the opposite of last year’s Decatur game [won by the Porcupines 49-21. “We are not a deep team at all, so we need to have kids in the right spot so we can finish a game.” Chesney threw for 360 yards on 26 completions. Bauman and Herrera led receivers with 157 and 144 yards, respectively. “Overall,” Hulett said, “I was pleased with the progress we have made over the last four weeks.”
by Henderson (5) and Eddy (4). The JV bested Chisholm Trail 25-18, 25-15. Ashley Witt and Kiersten Williams killed 3 balls apiece. “We are getting better every game,” the coach said. The 9th (5-1) swept the same four foes. Madison Smith led with 4 kills against Peaster while Addison Farris served 9 aces in the Grandview victory. She added 4 and Kambree Smith 3 aces in the Brewer win. SHS rallied from 8 points down at one point. Against Chisholm, Charisma Jones served 4 aces in the win.

Working on Labor Day history A near-riot and historical debates: Here's how the holiday was created BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Ah, Labor Day. Or as it's known today: “the unoffi cial end of summer via a three-day weekend.” But it wasn't always that way. The concept You can thank unions for the holiday. The fi rst Labor Day parade – “a monster labor festival” – was held Sept. 5, 1882 in New York City. It was also nearly the last Labor Day Parade. The event was organized by the Central Labor Union to exhibit “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations.” According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday “constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and wellbeing of our country.” Back in ’82, local unions sold 20,000 tickets to that fi rst parade. Since workers would lose a day's pay to participate, organizers were concerned about the turnout. The parade began with just a sprinkling of workers – so few that crowds along the sidewalk began jeering them. NYC cops, in columns and on horseback with clubs, were leery of a riot. That didn’t happen thanks to a last-minute arrival. Things changed abruptly when the Jewelers' Union arrived. And not only did they bring 200 workers. The JU also had a band. Playing “When I First Put This Uniform On” from Patience, an opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, the jewelers saved the day – and the future holiday. Soon, everyone fell in behind the band, including once-taunting spectators. Eventually, 10,000 workers showed up to hear speeches, attend a dance, and watch fi reworks. It was such a hit that other cities took notice.
Labor Day bandwagon. While some cities acknowledged the holiday in 1885-86, it was Oregon – acing out New York – that became the fi rst state to pass a law offi cially declaring a Labor Day; that happened Feb. 21, 1887. Four more states joined in – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York – the same year. By 1890, Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania also okayed the holiday. Finally, on June 28, 1894, the holiday became recognized federally, on the fi rst Monday of September, thanks to a bill authored by a South Dakota senator. Battle of the founders Who actually originally proposed the holiday is up for debate by two guys who also have similar sounding names: Matthew Maguire, a machinist and Peter McGuire, carpenter. McG's argument stems from being the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters. He suggested honoring those who “from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” However, recent research, according to dol.gov, points toward Mag as the originator. The secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in New Jersey, Mag pitched the holiday back in 1882 to the Central Labor Union. He even organized a committee to plan a demonstration and a picnic. Either way, the “workingman's holiday” was born.

Conservation Level Lake Bridgeport Eagle Mountain Lake Richland-Chambers Res. Cedar Creek Lake Lake Arlington Lake Benbrook Lake Worth bor Day marked the “end of summer” because school began the next day. The holiday is now marked by car sales, last minute vacations, and the fi nal time to wear white if you're fashion conscious. This is one of the years that Labor Day comes as late as it can, Sept. 7. There's plenty going on during the holiday – just not much in the way of its origin, in part because of the decline in union membership. While (non-agricultural) membership peaked in America in 1945 at 35 percent, it is eroding today. In Texas in 1968, 13.3 percent
of workers were in a union. By 2014 that number had dwindled to 4.9 percent. New York remains the state with the greatest number of union members at 25.6 percent. Alaska is next at 22.7 followed by Washington at 17.1 percent in 2014. Wonder what Maguire or McGuire would think of that?

Few things are more inspiring than the American flag. Labor Day is a chance to proudly display your love of the Stars and Stripes – in windows or on doors. Remove the fl ag and post it prominently in your home or business. Displaying the fl ag on Labor Day shows support and respect for the sometimes back-breaking toil it took from generations of Americans to make our country the one immigrants still fl ock to today. And hang on to this fl ag; you can put it with another that we’ll print on Nov. 4. You can honor America’s soldiers by joining the fl ags on Wednesday, Nov. 11 – Veterans Day.
