He spent his entire 30-year career serving the students and athletes of Hays County Independent School District as a teacher, varsity assistant coach, and later as the Hays Middle School athletic coordinator. He retired in 2013. He and his wife Sherry – who has been in education for 29 years herself – have two sons and a daughter. Their oldest son, Matthew, and their daughter, Kelly, both followed in their parents footsteps and became educators. The youngest son, Jacob, is a civil engineer in the San Antonio area. All three graduated from Texas A&M University. Posey takes his place on the Wall of Honor beside the many great athletes honored there.

Our history:

Stories of Springtown told through historic artifacts at Legends Museum BY NATALIE GENTRY It’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words, yet some photos and objects in the Legends Museum have tales to tell that could fill volumes. What makes the museum so special is the unique collection which comes from different families telling their stories about time spent in Springtown. Looking through the photos, scrapbooks, and personal objects allows the history to unfold in stories specific to this community.

This old house... What better place to start when discovering the history within the Legends Museum than with the story of the house itself? It took museum founder and curator Laurie Moseley and his wife Julia five years of research to discover the man who actually built the house: Jacob Isaac “J.I.” Wilkins. The answer came to them by accident when Lloyd Wilkins, J.I.’s son, wandered into the museum one December day in 2005 and told museum staffer Shirley Swan that his father had built the structure. He told Swan that each time his family passed the house he would say, “I built that house for $600.” While the Moseleys had seen Wilkins’ name on documents during their research, they weren’t able to name him as the home’s builder until Lloyd confi rmed the information. At the time the house was built, Wilkins was working as a teacher in Erwin, just east of Poolville, but he really wanted to take up farming. So, in 1916, Wilkins traded the house and 15 acres for 232 acres on SH 199 just north of Poolville. Today, the highway runs through the homestead. The Springtown house changed hands four more times between 1916 and 1942 when Wade and Janna Huddleston Hutcheson purchased it. When Janna died in 1990 the Moseleys bought the property in order to set up the museum. Today, photos of Wilkins, his family, and the other owners of the historic home can be found in a display case in the middle room of SHS maintained its position in fi rst place for the sixth Jacob Isaac “J.I.” Wilkins was the builder and original owner of the the museum. week in the Brookshire’s ExtraPoint contest. N2N seeks canned food donations this season Amid rumors of closure, food pantry continues to help those in need

by Natalie GeNtry Rumors flew around Springtown last week that the Neighbor to Neighbors (N2N) Food Pantry was closing its doors for good. According to board member Connie Ellis, this simply isn’t true. While the food pantry is down on donations due to difficulty getting food from state food banks for the last six months, N2N has been looking for farmers and contacting food processing plants – such as Old Plantation Meats – to identify other

sources for donated foods. “Hunting for Food is the organization that helps coordinate processing plants and donations to food pantries such as N2N,” Ellis said. Because of the shortage, the food pantry has downsized the overall amount of food supplied per family, but it is not in danger of closing. In fact, volunteers are ramping up efforts to begin creating Thanksgiving meals for this year. Sides such as green beans, corn, beans,

and cornbread are all traditionally associated with Thanksgiving and are essential to creating the meals. While any donation is appreciated – and cash donations go farthest – one specific area of need is for canned goods. That section of the pantry sits practically empty as cars line up outside. Neighbor to Neighbors distributes approximately 3,600 pounds of food a month to Springtown families who need help. For more information about items that are accepted at N2N call 817-523-6095.

6A SHS loses to stateranked Wildcats By Edwin nE wton It was an imperfect storm – a banged-up team versus the no. 6 team in the state. But Springtown High School Coach Brian Hulett’s team wouldn’t give up, tackling and hustling to the bitter end of a tough 51-7 loss to Kennedale Friday Oct. 9 at Porcupine Stadium. “It is difficult, but it’s what you have to do,” Hulett said. “The games are on the schedule and we are going to play them. We just have to do our best and play with who is healthy and doing the best every day.” The Porcupines biggest problem involved two big running backs, Quadraiz Wadley and Dailyn Wells. Wadley finished with 208 yards while Wells had 237. Both will be running for college football teams the day after they graduate high school. “They are big and fast,” Hulett said. Springtown didn’t help its cause, turning the ball over on its first four possessions, giving Kennedale great field position. “We played better at times defensively, but still need to make more plays,” Hulett said. “And when you play a quality opponent like Kennedale, the margin for error is small.” After the Springtown defense held Kennedale to a field goal, the offensive circus began. Wells had a 23 yard run, followed by Wadley runs of 2 and 31 yards. Springtown had a big play in the first half. Wide receiver Brandon Santo caught a 62-yard pass from quarterback Austin Bauman. Fellow wideout Wriley Russell scored on the next play and then kicked the extra point. It was 24-7 at the half. Any chance of a comeback was quickly doused by the Kennedale runningbacks. Wells and Wadley ran for three scores of 63, 66 and 82 yards. As a team, Kennedale finished with more than 500 yards rushing. There were a few highlights. Springtown wideout Mateo Herrera, who is having a strong season despite the rough schedule, collected a 42-yard pass from Bauman and got into Kennedale territory. But Springtown couldn’t capitalize. Bauman spent much of the rest of the evening scrambling for yards against a larger, quicker Kennedale front. Bauman ended up with 107 yards passing. Hulett said playing against a good team isn’t always fun, but it can be a learning experience. “You have to treat it as a learning opportunity,” he said. “You try and learn from your mistakes. We use the game as a measuring stick. We have more quality opponents on the way and we need to be better when we play them.” Springtown, 2-4, plays this Thursday, Oct. 15, at Diamond Hill Jarvis. “We have to move on from them (Kennedale) and be ready to play,” he said.

Pruitt 1st in contest Johnny Pruitt of Springtown missed only one game and took first place in this week's football contest. Pruitt collected his $20 first place check in a tiebreaker with two other people who also missed only one game. Pruitt guessed 57 as the total score of the Texas 24, Oklahoma 17 game (41). Blondie Robinson of Paradise and Sandra Ott-Sawyer of Springtown also missed only one game and had the same tiebreaker score – 60. Thus, they will split the second and third place winnings which total $7.50 each.

OPINION Thursday, October 15, 2015

www.springtown-epigraph.net

Phoning it in: Tidbits from the ‘notes’ of 2015

O

ccasionally, I hear something cool and I type it in the notes section of my phone. It might be something from TV or a book or song or sermon or just something overheard. Last Thanksgiving, I wrote a column about 2014’s collections. Here’s what’s ended up in the phone this year: Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Matthew 6:27. Of course this is true but those of us who want everybody happy can just flip the worry switch off. The tyranny of the urgent. The tyranny of talent. Don’t know why I wrote these down. Last November, I had “the tyranny of numbers” – must have a thing about the word tyranny.

When something stays with you for 40 years – a memory or a person – it’s the real deal. I don’t know where this came from; in fact, it might be my own since I was probably scrounging for something deep for the Bride’s 40th wedding anniversary last summer. Only walls are holding me in. This was from an episode of The Mentalist. For some reason, that resonated that night. The Who didn’t sell out. I figured if I wrote a column about The Who concert I attended last June, this was a witty headline since they had an album call The Who Sell Out. I didn’t write that column, though. Divisive/devices. I thought this would be a groovy odd rhyme if I ever got back to writing a fake rap song about…something. Because who doesn’t want

to read a fake rap song by a 59-year-old grandpa? (My rapper name is MC White Bread). Didn’t happen – yet, yo. You can drift or you swim. ON YOUR canI heard this MARK at church, it fits just Mark K. Campbell but about everything when it comes to getting off your behind and getting going. Houston is the boob job capital of the planet with 350,000. How could I not write that down? There’s an “Alaska triangle” – like the Bermuda Triangle – where

20,000 people have disappeared. I did not know this, and, with man-eating bears lurking up there every 20 feet, it’s just another reason to avoid visiting that frozen tundra. You determine what you are by what you do. Church. If you want your needs met, meet someone else’s. Church, again. The one clothing item homeless people need most socks. That makes sense when you think about it. “Hubristic justice.” Once a guy got towed and wrote a Cheers and Jeers section of the Star-Telegram about being towed, swearing that the towing company would one day pay for its hubristic injustice. I had never seen those two words together before, and it cracked me up.

Around $700,000 in loose change is left every year at airport security checkpoints. I found that amazing – and it explains why TSA workers are so intent on swapping those plastic containers so often. There’s some big money there! In September 1980, 11 songs in the Top 40 were from movies, the highest ever. Last week I mentioned how I’m relentlessly listening to Classic American Top 40 shows from the 1970s and 80s and this tidbit came from there. It’s rare these days, but “Let it Go” from Frozen was huge. The duller the ax, the harder the work. Ecclesiastes 10:10. So true. That Bible has it goin’ on when it comes to words to live by. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor and he can go a few years before hearing “Let it Go” again; even his granddaughters aren’t that cute.

Who scalped whom? Part 3: Easier than beheading

C

olin Calloway, who teaches history at Dartmouth College, feels the misconceptions are part of a “complex process of dehumanizing Indians to justify taking away their land and culture, and attributing the brutality of frontier race wars to the ‘other side.’” Axtell cautions against excess on either side of the argument – and suggests we shouldn't rush to judge our forebears’ behavior by today's moral standards. “If white Americans have assumed that only ‘savage' Indians scalped, they were clearly misinformed,” he says. “If they thought that scalping was particularly ‘savage,’ they conveniently turned a blind eye to their ancestors’ adoption and encouragement of the practice and to far more heinous acts and practices in America’s military past.”

But that still leaves the question of how the full story could have been widely ignored for so long. One reason is that Indian scalping has become part of our cultural mythology, incorporated into murals, prints, and even a Frederic Remington statue called “The Scalp.” The Hannah Dustin statue, by contrast, is decidedly obscure, secluded on an island next to a park-and-ride lot outside Boscawen. It gets few visitors, although vandals have broken off Dustin's nose. As for those Indian scalps in local collections? “My guess is that lots of 19th-century museums didn't want to know whether the scalps they had were Indian or Euro-American," says Dean Snow, who heads the Anthropology Department at Pennsylvania State University. Then he added a more personal anecdote, overturning another miscon-

ception: that it was always a death sentence. “For what it's worth,” he said, “my own great-greatgreat-great grandfather was scalped and left for HISTORICAL dead when he HIGHLIGHTS was young by a Mohawk – Laurie Moseley British allies then – raiding party during the Revolution.” Family tradition holds that someone shaped a silver skullcap to cover the scalped area. “He woke up without his hair,” Snow said, “and lived to be an old man with a silver plate on his head.” Who invented scalping?

Scalping – cutting off the scalp of a dead enemy as proof of his demise – was common practice throughout North America before colonists got there. It is described in Indian oral histories, and preserved scalps were found at archaeological sites. Colonists learned to scalp enemies from the Indians. The European custom was to cutoff people’s heads for proof/trophies, originally, but scalps are easier to transport and preserve, so the colonists quickly switched to the Indian method. Once they picked up the technique, the English did a tremendous amount of scalping, both of natives and of rival Frenchmen. There is a bounty notice from 1755 offering varying rewards for the scalps of Indian men, women, and children. These scalps, incidentally, were commonly referred to as “redskins,” one

reason why that is considered such a rude racial slur by many Native Americans today. American and Canadian frontiersmen kept up the tradition of scalping until the turn of the 20th century, though in some places, like California, they reverted back to severed heads. There was actually still a law on the books in Canada as of the year 2000 promising bounties in exchange for Indian scalps, though the embarrassed Canadian government was hurrying to repeal it. In other words, the scalping technique came from the American Indians, the idea of taking a piece of a dead enemy's body as a war prize was well known to Indians and Europeans alike, and the idea of paying bounties for dead body parts came from the Europeans. Laurie Moseley is an author, archeologist and historian who lives in Springtown. He is the director of Springtown’s Legends Museum.

BP settles with 5 states, federal government

B

P, one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, has settled with the federal government and the states of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida over claims related to the Deep Water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality announced on Oct. 5 that Texas stands to receive $800 mil lion of the $20.8 billion settlement “to restore Gulf resources with portions dedicated to the coastal economy as well as restoration projects to address damage to natural resources.” “When we include money from previous settlements with these new funds, Texas will have more than $1 billion to fund projects that restore and enhance the Texas Gulf coast and mitigate economic impacts of this disaster,” said TCEQ Commissioner Toby Baker. U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Paul Zukunft said the settlement “ensures that BP repays the government for its costs in responding to the Deepwater Horizon tragedy. The historic civil penalty also sends a clear message of accountability for those who pollute the U.S. environment.”

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a civil suit against BP and several affiliates, and proved the spill was caused by BP’s gross negligence. Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi STATE and Texas also filed civil claims CAPITAL against BP relating to the spill, HIGHLIGHTS including claims Ed Sterling for economic losses and natural resource damages. Sales tax revenue up Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar on Oct. 7 announced that sales tax revenue for the state in September was $2.2 billion, up 1.9 percent compared to Sep tember 2014. However, the $616.2 million in local sales tax allocations for October to be sent to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts represent a decrease of 0.9 percent com pared to October 2014.

“The modest growth in state sales tax revenue, in line with the Biennial Revenue Estimate issued in January, continues the trend of recent months. Stronger growth in collections from the retail trade, restaurant, services and construction sectors offset declines from the oil and gas-related industries,” Hegar explained. Abbott announces grants Gov. Greg Abbott on Oct. 2 announced the award of some $133 million in criminal justice and victim services grants to local law enforcement agencies, domestic violence shelters, child sex trafficking victims programs and other governmental and non-profit agencies across Texas. According to the announcement, grants include state and federal funds administered by the Criminal Justice Division of the Governor’s Office and are part of the Governor’s efforts to implement his “Bicentennial Blueprint” policy plans for the state. “Nothing is more important than ensuring the safety of all Texans,” Abbott said. These new grant awards for services and organizations were established “to go beyond simply providing shelter for

victims of domestic violence, but also assist the victims in filing police reports, obtaining emergency protection orders and prosecuting their abusers,” according to the Governor’s Office.

Movie Man

Thursday, October 15, 2015 Springtown Epigraph

The Intern: shines early but then it’s no sale The Movie Man had planned on going to see Pan this week, but that did not occur because of circumstances beyond his control. So he dropped back a little to catch The Intern which is a bummer because Pan would've been fun to talk about since it's one of the big failures of the year. Well, let's talk a little about it anyway.

on a $150 million budget. With a total projection of less than $40 million in the U.S., it's unlikely to recoup its $150 million overseas with this subject matter: foreign sci-fi fans made up a big chunk of the Jupiter Ascending defi cit, but fantasy is more iffy. Pan is getting panned from every direction. Moviegoers, critics, Native American groups (who complained of a white woman in a "color" role), and even from an online adop- tion group, saying it demeans parentless children. Nancy Meyers does not have to worry about bottom lines. The Intern is performing OK -- but not like her other upscale, glitzy, frothy movies like Something’s Gotta Give (2003, with a great performance by Diane Keaton, $124.6 million) and It’s Complicated (2009, $112.7 million). She directed one big hit, What Women Want (2000, $182.8 million [back when Mel Gibson was still red hot]). The Intern, now at around $55 million, won't reach those lofty levels, but it will approach making back double on its $35 million budget. Not bad.

About The Film There have been four big-budget movies that have been true misfi res so far this year:Jupiter Ascending, Tomorrowland, Fantastic Four, and now Pan. Each has a slightly different story. Jupiter Ascending arrived with bad buzz, and, like Pan, its release date got bumped around, a bad sign. The sci-fi premise -- courtesy of the Wachowski brothers -- scared normal moviegoers away. Made for $176 million, it took in just $47.4 million in America. Tomorrowland did better and was not a true dud. But hopes were certainly higher for it. The movie hardly tanked with a box offi ce take of $93.4 million; however it cost $190 million to The Plot (spoiler) make. specialty. An effort is made to make this movie both a feminist statement and an old school "wise old man knows best" picture. The Intern pulls it off most of the time. Best Scene In a hotel, De Niro has stayed with Hathaway until she fell asleep. The TV is on with Gene Kelley in Singing In The Rain (1952) performing "You Were Meant for Me." While De Niro has only barely mentioned his late wife, clearly this song had some connection to her. His eyes well up and so do plenty in the audience.

She is almost overwhelmed with responsibilities which means she's often away from her husband (Anders Holm) and daughter (JoJo Kushner). Slowly Hathaway sees that De Niro is a wise old fellow -- helping not only her but many of her staff. Hathaway must decide whether to give up running the company to calm her life -- which she (and De Niro) know includes her husband having an affair. A decision IS made -- but other voices are soon to be heard.

What Dosen’t Work Out of nowhere comes a scene that involves breaking into a house to recover an errant email. De Niro and three young interns have a wacky escapade trying to delete the email. The scene has a couple of laughs, but it's way out of place. All of the other characters are background and they have little to do. Russo especially is wasted. The movie meanders over the

UT Southwestern, Texas Health plan network System aims to improve patient experience and increase access to specialized care The UT System Board of Regents today approved the creation of an integrated regional health network (Integrated Network) including the UT Southwestern Medical Center and Texas Health Resources (Texas Health) systems. Approval had previously been granted to Texas Health by its board. The new Integrated Network, to be named Southwestern Health Resources, leverages the strengths of two local health care systems to provide increased access to primary care and specialized care for the people of North Texas. Plans call for the Integrated Network to include 27 hospitals throughout North Texas, as well as an expansive network of physicians (UTSW faculty, Texas Health employed, university-affi liated and independent) from both organizations. The network represents the next step in a long history of cooperation between UT Southwestern and Texas Health. As envisioned, the Integrated Network is expected to improve the quality of care and enhance the effi ciency of providing health services to North Texans. The Integrated Network will enable hospitals and physicians to work together, using common health profi les so that each person receives quality care at the most appropriate location. It will also create increased access to clinical trials and medical specialists, as well as opportunities to expand medical education and research initiatives. “This joint effort will help both organizations better serve North Texas through integration and innovation,” said Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky, President of UT Southwestern. “Our organizations are committed to continuous improvement in the quality and safety of the care we provide, while mindful that society is increasingly and appropriately demanding accountability and transparency in the use of resources and value created for the patient and other

stakeholders. “We at UTSW believe we also have a special responsibility for driving the translation of scientifi c advances and innovation into better care for patients, he continued. “Southwestern Health Resources will include an integrated, coordinated network of nearly 3,000 physicians that can provide the communities of our region the full continuum of care, from prevention and health management to highly specialized care in state-of-the-art facilities.” “Both organizations share a strong commitment to improving well-being and providing the best possible care for patients at every stage of their life’s journey,” said Barclay Berdan, FACHE, CEO of Texas Health Resources. “We expect the new network will help improve quality and enhance affordability during a time when patients, insurers, and other payers are increasingly sensitive to health care costs. “It will enable physicians from UTSW, Texas Health Physicians Group and independent practices the opportunity to come together in a high-performing, clinically integrated care model, governed and led by physicians,” he continued. “But most importantly, this supports our shared mission of improving the health of the people in the communities we serve.” Specifi cally, the Integrated Network is expected to offer several key advantages for patients: Integrated Continuum of Physician-Driven Care: UT Southwestern’s network of faculty and community-based physicians will work together with Texas Health’s employed physicians and independent physicians affi liated with both organizations to deliver the highest quality and most cost-effective care through this Integrated Network comprised of both primary care physicians and experienced specialty care physicians working in an expanded 16-county area.

Azle leads area in sales tax BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN The cities of Sanctuary and Azle, along with Azle’s Crime Control and Prevention District and its Municipal Development District, continue to show encouraging increases in sales tax revenue compared with revenues in 2014. The city of Pelican Bay and the town of Lakeside have recorded some decreases, while the cities of Springtown and Reno are holding their own in spite of a dip in monthly revenue. Allocations are based on monthly sales made in August by businesses that report tax monthly. Municipalities and special purpose districts received those allocations in October. The city of Azle’s October revenue of $179,758 is up 6.20 percent from $169,263 in October 2014, and its year-to-date

revenue is up 4.94 percent over the same period last year. Azle’s CCPD is up 5.83 percent for October with $34,281 compared with $32,391 in October 2014. Hegar also said today that sales tax revenue for the state in September was $2.2 billion, up 1.9 percent compared to September 2014. “The modest growth in state sales tax revenue, in line with the Biennial Revenue Estimate

issued in January, continues the trend of recent months,” Hegar said. “Stronger growth in collections from the retail trade, restaurant, services and construction sectors offset declines from the oil and gas-related industries.”

This connection will enable patients throughout North Texas to continue valued relationships with their local physicians, while benefi ting from increased scale and access to an expanded group of acute-care physicians. Integrated Hospital Network: The 27-hospital network will focus on delivering coordinated care through UT Southwestern’s two university hospitals and Texas Health Resource’s 25 community hospitals. A key component of this network will be a new organization (a Joint Operating Company) formed to bring together the three Dallas hospitals – UTSW’s William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital and Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and THR’s Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. This organization will provide patients unprecedented access to care for their specific needs regardless of their location. UT Southwestern’s patient care, education, and research missions will remain under its ultimate control, and the Integrated Network will in fact provide expanded opportunities for teaching and clinical research. Texas Health Resources will provide signifi cant support for expansion of UT Southwestern’s academic initiatives as part of the overall affiliation between the two organizations. The Integrated Network will not alter UT Southwestern’s commitment to its partnership with Parkland Memorial Hospital or its other relationships, including those with Children’s Medical Center Dallas and Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The new network will not utilize any state funds provided to UT Southwestern. Although UT Southwestern is a state institution, neither its state appropriation nor funds provided by the UT System to UT Southwestern are used in direct support of its clinical facilities or services.
