Teams choosing Porcupine Stadium for neutral playoff clash site BY MARK K. CAMPBELL This might be Porcupine Country but in the next few days, you might spy Yellow Jackets, Cowboys, Hornets, Longhorns and others in Springtown. Once again, Porcupine Stadium is attracting area schools looking for an exceptional venue for their postseason contests. Booked already are Gordon-Bryson and Muenster-Meridian – the former a 6-man game, the latter 11-man. The Springtown gridiron has become the go-to venue for the 6-man Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship's playoffs. Once again, TCAF will play its semifinal and championship games at the Springtown stadium.

11-man vs. 6-man Porcupine Stadium Facilities Director Carl Hornback says it’s tricky to prepare the field since 6-man plays on a different sized area than traditional football. “I don't necessarily like prepping the field for 6-man, then 11-man, then 6-man again, but that’s how it worked out this year,” he said. Removable paint is used to mark the differences. A grounds crew will get the field ready for the Gordon-Bryson 6-man game then, in less than 24 hours, prePLEASE SEE TEAMS, PAGE 2A.

SISD superintendent named ‘Educator of the Year’ by foreign exchange group BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Springtown ISD Superintendent Mike Kelley has received numerous awards throughout the years – from childhood until today – and he is always quick to admit that he alone was not responsible for whatever is being recognized. That trait was evident when Kelley reflected on his recent honor as the International Sudent Exchange (ISE) Educator of the Year. He and wife Teresa picked up the award in person – in Ireland. Because foreign students who have come to Springtown have had such positive experiences here, Kelley said, ISE representative Kala King has contacted him often through the years. “The exchange students who have ended up ‘coming over’ have had terrific experiences in Springtown and loved our school and community,”

Mike Kelley, Springtown ISD superintendent, addressed the crowd in Ireland. Kelley said. King and Kelley have worked together for seven years and she nominated the superintendent for the honor. Kelley quickly noted that he was just

a contact between ISE and the school; King would call Kelley for references regarding families interested in hosting an exchange student. “Typically,” Kelley said, “I am merley the liaison between ISE and the school – albeit one who has always enthusiastically welcomed the perspectives foreign exchange students share with our local students and community.” The award was bestowed after a Board of Directors met with representatives from several countires to review the collective achievements from the past 12 months. To fetch the honor, Kelley and his wife ventured to Ireland, site of the ISE’s annual summit. He was given the Educator of the Year award in Dublin. PLEASE SEE KELLEY, PAGE 5A.

‘Hypothized’ quakes study dashed as wells approved BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN In a final hearing Nov. 3, Texas Railroad Commission (TRC) members unanimously voted to allow XTO Energy and EnerVest to retain permits for injection wells they operate in the Reno area. A scientific study conducted by Southern Methodist University (SMU) researchers concluded that the most likely cause of a swarm of more than 30 earthquakes in the Azle and Reno areas from November 2013 to January

2014 was related to oil and gas activity in the area. That study pointed to high volumes of wastewater injection combined with saltwater (brine) extraction from natural gas wells in the area as the most likely cause of the earthquakes. The Railroad Commission heard testimony from those scientists as well as the mayors of both Azle and Reno, and representatives of XTO and EnerVest. TRC Technical Examiner Paul

DuBois told Railroad Commissioners David Porter, Christi Craddick, and Ryan Sitton that SMU’s report “showed a weak temporal correlation between injection and seismic activity, too small, however, to imply a causal relationship without further corroborating evidence. “[SMU scientists] hypothesized, but did not attempt to establish a me- With soldiers and Parker County Judge Wayne Hayes (right) at atchanical hydraulic linkage or estimate tention, Vietman veteran Rupert Harrell raises the U.S. Flag during a Veterans Day ceremony at the Tabernacle Nov. 11. pare for the 11-man MuensterMeridian contest. “Then we set it all back up for the 6-man games on Saturday,” Hornback said. And even more contests could be on the horizon. Being available Hornback said he had to wait a bit before putting Porcupine Stadium on the market because Springtown was flipping for a home-home bi-district game. SHS won the first flip to play on Thursday but lost the second; so Springtown goes to Sanger on Thursday, Nov. 12. Because of that potential for the Porcupines to play at home, “I couldn't completely box my-

self in for the entire weekend,” Hornback said. Right now there are no second round games set, but that could change, the director said. “I'll look to see if there are any potential matchups where we would be in the middle and reach out to those coaches,” he said. Stuck in the middle Being is the middle is ideal. But the 2014 biennial UIL realignment made it tougher for Porcupine Stadium to be an in between site. “The UIL did a number on us last year during realignment, and we are now on the edge of three different regions. “So,” Hornback said, “all of the first and second round

games usually go west or east.” Before that, Springtown was uniquely situated right in the middle of the regions. “That meant we were geographically good for a lot of matchups,” he said. Porcupine Stadium still remains a good place for Area round games, but, after that – with the current UIL alignment – larger towns with bigger stadiums, highways, and restaurants usually earn the neutral bid. That could all change when the UIL rescrambles all the schools and classifications again next February. For now, the lights will remain on for football at Porcupine Stadium for at least two more weeks.

Stitching it together Community quilts reflect Springtown citizens’ close connection BY NATALIE GENTRY Tucked away in a corner of the Springtown Legends Museum hang two unassuming creations of fabric and thread – handmade community quilts. Obviously, quilts were originally a strictly utilitarian article, born of the necessity of providing warm covers for beds. They were also used as hangings for doors and windows that were not sealed well enough to keep out the cold. However, in the mid-1800s, quilters began the tradition of making signature blankets to honor family members or friends. During a time when loved

ones often moved away and seldom, if ever, returned home to visit, these quilts served as remembrances for those families. The first community quilt in the museum was completed in 1929 by folks who were early settlers of the city. It was created in shades of red and white. The oldest person’s name on that quilt when it was finally finished was Blackmon Shirley. He lived to be 114 years old. The second quilt was done in the 1950s. This one features many names that suggest the participants were descendants of

names on the older quilt. Community – or friendship quilts as they were frequently called – were often highly cherished items, and, as a result of the special care these quilts received, many of them survive today. For individual owners, or in this case the community of Springtown as a whole, quilts such as these remain records of times past when the world wasn’t as small as it seems today and the names of loved ones lost to illness, war, or simply distance became precious memories stitched in time. And the rest, as they say, is history.

PARKER COUNTY ARRESTS The following individuals who list addresses in the Azle and/or Springtown areas were arrested by various law enforcement agencies and booked into the Parker County Jail between Nov. 1-7. • A 34-year-old Azle man was arrested by Parker County Sheriff’s deputies Nov. 2 and charged with possession of a controlled substance – penalty group 1, 1-4 grams, a third-degree felony. • Parker County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 36-year-old Poolville man Nov. 2 for insufficient bond on a prior charge of driving with an invalid license with previous convictions. • A 22-year-old Azle man was arrested Nov. 2 by Springtown police for warrants for failure to appear in court and an expired vehicle inspection sticker. • Victor Pacheco-Hernandez,

37, of Springtown, was arrested Nov. 5 by Parker County Sheriff’s deputies for a warrant for aggravated kidnapping, a firstdegree felony. • Courtney Ann Sweeny, 32, of Springtown, was arrested Nov. 5 by Reno police for a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony, as well as for a motion to adjudicate guilt on a prior charge of injury to child, elderly, or the disabled. • Springtown police arrested Joshua Ryan Dutton, 32, of Springtown Nov. 6 and charged him with driving while intoxicated. • Cynthia Bailey Evans, 43, of Azle was arrested Nov. 7 by Azle police for a warrant for theft of property, less than $1,500 with two or more previous convictions, a state jail felony.

Kelley receives international award ■ KELLEY, FROM PAGE ONE.

“I was given the opportunity to thank ISE for allowing Springtown’s students to experience other cultures through their program,” he said. While in Ireland, Kelley – who had his trip covered by ISE but paid for Teresa’s – said he and his wife took advantage of the expeience and visited several places on the island. Among the sites the duo ventured to: St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral, and Trinity College where the Book of Kells is kept. They also took in such sights as the Cliffs of Moher, Corcomroe Abbey, and Bunratty Castle. “We had a great time,” Kel-

ley recalled. Throughout his life, he said, someone has always been crucial in helping him achieve success. He said student-athletes “helped me look like a better coach than I was.” Kelley noted that a superior support staff and exceptional lead teachers providing input and advice helped him excel as a campus administrator. As a superintendent in Springtown, Kelley is quick to laud the Board of Trustees for their help. “Any success I’ve had over the last 25 years has been achieved because I’ve been Mike Kelley (left) accepts his award in Dublin, Ireland blessed to have exceptional professionals and a supportive from an international foreign exchange program. wife and family surrounding me,” Kelley said.

The annual canned goods drive between doctors Felix Cano, Brian Barone, Gene McDaniel, Robert Moss, Larry Murphy, and James Wooten, is over. As always, the friendly competition between the clinics ensured that Neighbor to Neighbors Food Pantry (N2N) and Springtown residents who receive the food will have more during this trying season. All together the clinics collected a total of 713 canned goods this year, and – although there was no official winner this year – everyone knows the true winners are N2N and the community as a whole.

If you love the Earth, you’ll eat more hamburgers

S

orry about this, militant vegetarians, but if you really think meat is murder, you’ve got a big decision to make. Because of cows. Forget cars and hair spray – the primary culprits of global warming are gassy bovines. Clearly, we need to start eating much more of them; vegetarians are going to have to step up to save our planet. If we can get cow expulsions under control, then maybe my asthma inhaler will go back to $5 instead of $30. (A law change forcing companies to use a new puffer propellant that was apparently terrorizing the ozone jacked up the price.) The problem with cows is that they

Since I live in the United States, efforts to save I’m not too sure how much that actuour blue planet ally is in American, but it sounds like if they don’t a lot. Anyway, there are over 1.8 billion I can eat a lot cows going to town – gas- and poopof cow meat wise – on the Earth every day, so if my but, after a few math is correct, that’s a lot of methane hundred milspewing out of various bovine orifices. lion pounds, Something has got to be done about ON YOUR I’m probably these cows. going to fall Let’s eat ‘em! MARK out. VegetarAccording to climate change experts, probably, if we all would eat a Mark K. Campbell ians are going to have to do bunch of cows, we’d quit having hurricanes and terrible droughts. (Maybe their part. In a 2014 study (Googled!), it was I should Google that.) This is where vegetarians are go- discovered that cows are responsible

for 13 million tons of methane annually. By contrast, oil and gas contributed only 7 million in that same time frame. (Glenn Beck just did a happy back flip.) Another bonus for vegetarians eating cows is that there’d eventually be more food for vegetarians since the fewer critters (the cows, I mean) will be leaving much more plant life for vegetarians to consume. It’s a win-win for them (the vegetarians), really. Knock back a few zillion burgers and then it’s all-you-can-eat grass forever. Now, other animals are responsible for gas emissions, too, and I don’t mean just firefighters. Each sheep will fire out 17.6 pounds of gas every year and pigs 3.3 pounds.

(Pigs are already under the knife of public opinion since bacon is reported to lead to cancer. At least that’s what they said last week.) The average human emits 0.26 pounds of gaseous funk annually. (The Bride will attest that I have had days when I reached that mark by noon.) We’re light-weights. The key to reducing methane gas emissions is fixing cows’ stomachs – they need to digest better. Surely someone at Texas A&M is working on combining hay with Tums or Maalox. There, I just fixed global warming. You’re welcome, world. Let’s eat! Mark K. T LETTER TO THE EDITOR Take care with weapons over the upcoming holidays Dear Editor, With the holidays approaching, I am writing to remind your readers to be sure their firearms are secured from visiting children and other guests. A handgun or other firearm used for protection should be secured but quickly accessible using a gun vault. Other firearms should be unloaded and secured with a locking device or

placed in a locked container like a gun case or safe. Ammunition is to be stored separately and locked up. Hiding a firearm is not sufficient to prevent accidents. Allowing a child to gain access to a loaded firearm is negligent, lifethreatening and against the law. Please handle and store your firearms safely and responsibly all year round. I hope everyone has safe and happy holidays. Shane Scott Azle

n his book The Texas Rangers, Walter Prescott Webb says that, “On May 15, 1838, [Sam] Houston approved a bill providing for a ‘Corps of Regular Cavalry’ of two hundred and eighty men. The enlistment was to be from one to three years as the president might determine. The troops were to be used to protect the southwestern frontier from the approach of the Mexican forces. “Lamar became president on December 10, 1838, and proceeded to reverse every policy that Houston had adopted. Where Houston pursued peace, Lamar, like his two namesakes (for his name was Mirabeau Buonaparte), favored war. Houston loved Indians, if he loved anything; Lamar hated them, but his hatred for Indians was probably secondary to his hatred for Houston. “Lamar, in his message to Congress, set forth his determination to handle the Indians with steel and lead. He stated that the proper policy to pursue towards them was one of absolute expulsion. ‘Nothing short of this will

There were to be fifteen companies of fifty-six men officered by a captain, a first and a second lieutenant. The regiment was to be divided into eight detachments and stationed in regular army posts along the line of the frontier from Red River to the Rio Grande. “The full provisions of this law

were never carried into effect. Colonel William G. Cooke made an expedition to the Red River, and established one post near the Cross Timbers, but his expedition exhausted the appropriations, which amounted to three hundred thousand dollars, and nothing further was done. That this regiment was intended to form apart of the regular service is indicated by the long enlistment, the permanent location in forts, the fact that a part of the force was infantry, and the elaborate provision for a staff of officers. “On December 29, 1838, Lamar approved a law for the ‘further protection of the Frontier against the Comanches and other Indians.’ This law provided for eight companies of mounted volunteers for six months. The regiment was to receive the same pay as the mounted riflemen who were called into the ranging service under the law of December 10, 1836. The regiment was to have a colonel, a lieutenant colonel, and a major. These men may be called Rangers. “In the following January a law was passed providing for one company of

It is to push a rigorous war against them; pursuing them to their hiding places without mitigation or compassion, until they shall be made to feel that flight from our borders without hope of return is preferable to the scourges of war.’ “In preparation for this war, Lamar turned to the regular military establishments. He recognized that war was expensive, but he thought it was most commonly successful in proportion to judicious expenditures, and that it seldom succeeded under the guidance of ‘those who would value gold above liberty and life above honor.’ Lamar’s

The next day, January 24, a law was approved appropriating a million dollars for the protection of the frontier. “The president was authorized to discharge all men in the military service save the regiment for the protection of the northern and western frontier, and the ordnance staff. ov. Greg Abbott says Texas sheriffs won’t receive grant funds from his Criminal Justice Division unless they comply with U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement notification and detention requests. In a Nov. 4 letter, Abbott wrote to sheriffs: “Beginning now, all Criminal Justice Division grant awards will require that sheriffs departments fully honor ICE’s detention requests for criminal immigrants. “Any applicant that cannot certify that their office will honor all ICE detainers for criminal immigrants will be ineligible for CJD funding. Further, any applicant that certifies full compliance with ICE detainer requests – but subsequently fails to honor an ICE detainer – will be subject to claw-back provisions and must refund the full amount of their CJD grant award.” “As governor,” Abbott continued, “I simply will not allow CJD grant funding administered by this office to support law enforcement agencies that refuse to cooperate with a federal law enforcement program that is intended to keep dangerous criminals off Texas streets.” On Oct. 26, Abbott sent a

letter to Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez, calling on her to reverse her o f f i c e ’s policy “of not detaining all criminal immigrants” pursuant to ICE’s detainer program.

After 45-2 victory over Castleberry, it’s back to the postseason for the Porcupines BY MARK K. CAMPBELL The Porcupine football team took care of business in the final two games of the season and those victories propelled SHS into the playoffs once again. Springtown (5-5, 3-2) trounced Castleberry 45-2. With the win and with Sanger’s loss, the Porcupines will tangle with the Indians – the 2014 bi-district foe, too – in the first round of the postseason on the road at Sanger. At River Oaks, the teams managed just a field goal by Wriley Russell – 24 yards – in the first quarter. But that was about to quickly change. Springtown poured over

three TDs in the second and third quarters to demolish the Lions. But the other side of the ball shone, too, Coach Brian Hulett recalled. “It was probably our most dominating performance from our defense all year,” the coach said. After allowing a couple of first downs early in the contest, the SHS D clamped down on Castleberry. “We did a really good job of getting three and outs the rest of the way,” Hulett said. Aiding in snuffing Lion drivers were interceptions by Fisher Drewry and Dylan Waddle and sacks by Miguel Galan and Brandon Santos.

The Springtown offense got untracked with another aerial bombardment from quarterback Kaleb Chesney. He tossed two second quarter TD passes – to Trent Partain and Mateo Herrera – and two more in the third period – to Santos and Suliman Uddin. Ashton Watson ran over on a 7-yard run to cap the first half scoring and Quinton Allen ended the SHS tally with a 3-yard TD rush in the third. “I don’t know if we played our absolute best against Castleberry, but I thought our kids did a great job, and I feel like we were in control the whole game,” the coach said. The blowout victory allowed opportunities to get more Porcupines on the field. “Offensively, we were able to work on some things we needed to and, along the way, got to get a lot of kids reps,” Hulett said.

Next up Sanger

The Indians are a familiar foe for Springtown. The two teams met in bi-district last season with Sanger winning 31-21. Then the squads scrimmaged this year. Sanger is 9-1 with its only loss last week to state-ranked Argyle. “They are a really good team,” SHS Coach Brian Hulett said. “It’s very cliche, but they are big and fast.” All Indian linemen are over 250 pounds. “And their skill kids are fast.” But Hulett said the Porcupines are playing “our best football at the right time,” adding, “I can’t wait to see what our kids can do.”

Vernon ends Springtown volleyball year in Graham BY MARK K. CAMPBELL The 2015 volleyball season ended for the Lady Porcupines on Nov. 5 with a 1-3 loss to Vernon at the Graham gym. Coach Leighanne Strickland said, “We had a wonderful season; we set goals and we met those goals.” Four seniors graduate. “We are going to miss them and wish them the best of luck,” the coach said. “Most of them are leaving with their names on a lot of gold balls.”

Craig goes out on top as buff Bond in Spectre

7

More serious Bond Starring: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Lea Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes Directed by: Sam Mendes Rated PG-13 for: violence, mild language, Bond girl stuff email: movieman@azlenews.net

... on a scale of 1-10

Movie Man The opening titles are cool and borderline creepy with a multi-tentacled critter writhing around girls and Craig. The sequence also helps you catch up on major developments from prior Craig Bonds. Director Sam Mendes, who also made Skyfall, follows the Bond template of pretty girls, several chases in a variety of vehicles, long fights, and lovely views of distant lands. He also injects some sly nods to many previous Bond movies throughout Spectre. Best scene The opening shot in the movie is fantastic. It’s very long, several minutes, and is a detailed, exceptionally complex shot that goes from high above a parade, down to the ground, into a building, up an elevator, into a bedroom, out on a building’s edge, and to an assassin’s perch. It’s reminiscent of the famous opening shot from Boogie Nights (1997, MM #205, 4) that you can see on Netflix right now – but, beware, it’s a very hard R if you keep watching. The scene, combined with the following unique credits, make the first 10 minutes of Spectre fabulous. However…

After Craig, the rest of the actors get short shrift. Of course, this is a Bond movie, but Fiennes and Waltz are in the picture far too little. Few things are more boring than a car chase that goes on too long and there’s one here.

The rating This is a Bond movie. It’s full of innuendo, some carefully shot skin, an occasional vulgarity, and, of course, a lot of violence. It’s an OK PG-13. Summing up Whoever the next Bond is, there’s no denying that Craig has elevated the role. The series will likely continue down the same road, but the Movie Man wouldn’t mind seeing the franchise lighten up a bit.

Spectre bogs down severely about 30 minutes in. The movie feels every bit of its 2 hours, 28 minutes; it should be shorter. The final epilogue is a real dud.

Campaign aims to stop 15-year streak of state road deaths

Someone has died on a Lone Star roadway every day since Nov. 2000 BY MISTY SHAW It’s been 5,478 days – and counting – that Texas has gone a single day without a fatality automobile accident. That’s 15 consecutive years of daily deaths on roadways statewide. November 7 marked a “grim milestone” as a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) press release put it: At least one road fatality has occurred daily since the year 2000, totaling 51,832 lives lost. In 2014 alone, 15 people died on roadways in Parker County and five in rural Tarrant County, according to state data. And with the busy holiday travel season coming up, TxDOT is urging motorists to help end this awful trend. You can read the story of this terrible wreck from the point of view of reporter Carla Noah Stutsman on the Opinion page; her daughter was a passenger in the collision that killed three teenagers in 1996.
