Tour of Homes a holiday success BY MISTY SHAW The Christmas Tour of Homes was a feast for the eyes and a successful fundraiser again this year with more than 60 people in attendance. “It was great this year, the weather was perfect, and we had a great crowd,” said Amy Walker, director of the Springtown Area Chamber of Commerce, which coordinates the event annually. Holiday decorating began as much as a month in advance at the beautifully appointed homes of four local families – John and Christy Ross, Brandon and Sha Conway, Bo and Amy Walker, and Mike and Karen Patterson – as well as at Outreach of Love Church. Walker said the event aims to raise at least $1,000 for the Legends Museum – its sole source of funding outside of membership dues and donations. “Each home was so spectacular and everyone seemed to enjoy them,” Walker said. “I think we did good for the Museum and we look forward to next year!” Santa was afloat in the pool at the home of John and Christy Ross during the Christmas Tour of Homes Dec. 5.

Springtown trained – Peaster proud Three coaches with SHS backgrounds lead the Lady Hounds BY MARK K. CAMPBELL A trio of Peaster coaches is having stunning success using training and skills learned decades earlier when they were Springtown athletes and coaches. Autumn Threet, Carol Ann Warren, and Emily Evans all were Lady Porcupines before accepting positions at PHS. They just got back from taking the Peaster volleyball team to the state tournament. Springtown roots Head Coach Threet was Autumn Summers when playing volleyball and basketball at Springtown High. She was talented at both, being the district MVP setter in volleyball and All-District twice in basketball. Every team she played for before graduating in 2001 went to the playoffs – but she said she really wanted to reach the state level, and that did not These three coaches with Springtown roots – (l-r) Emily Evans, Autumn Threet, and Carol Ann Warren happen. she earned a scholarship to play at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith; that team reached the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament. From there, Threet transferred to Henderson State – also in Arkansas – for two more scholarship years. She still holds the HSU record for most aces in a set with 12. Warren, an assistant at Peaster, was Carol Ann Carlisle; she married another standout Springtown athlete, Keith Warren. As a Lady Porcupine, Warren, Class of 1987, was one of the best ever. She played volleyball, basketball, tennis, and track and ventured into the postseason often in the mid1980’s. Warren was the district high jump champ in1987 and is a member of the SHS Hall of Fame. Evans – Emily Culwell then – graduated from Springtown in 1999. PLEASE SEE THREE, PAGE 5A.

Christmas on the Square returns Sat. Annual celebration ready to go BY MARK K. CAMPBELL It’s year No. 14 for Springtown’s Christmas on the Square. This year’s event runs from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and, as usual, is jampacked with things to do. Right off the bat, Santa Claus arrives at 11. Vendors will offer all kinds of unique Christmas gifts. A bounce house and petting zoo are just a couple of places where excited children will have a blast. Finding something to eat will be easy since food vendors will provide all sorts of grub.

Christmas on the Square’s entertainment is always top notch and this year is no different. Dancers and choirs and singers provide non-stop cheer from the main stage. A stop-down event arrives at 2 p.m. when the Bonus Bucks winners are drawn. Those present when names are drawn can win one of five $100, one $200, or, the biggie, one $300 in funds to spend locally. Expect the usual festive atmosphere City Manager Doug Hughes (left) and Mayor Tom Clayton display a commemorative blanket to be around the famed Tabernacle – that’s sold at Christmas on the Square. Available in three colors, the throw is $50 and details buildings from Christmas on the Square 2015. Springtown’s past. Proceeds go toward the Tabernacle restoration. Photo by Mark K. Campbell
