Tour of Homes a holiday success BY MISTY SHAW The Christmas Tour of Homes was a feast for the eyes and a successful fundraiser again this year with more than 60 people in attendance. “It was great this year, the weather was perfect, and we had a great crowd,” said Amy Walker, director of the Springtown Area Chamber of Commerce, which coordinates the event annually. Holiday decorating began as much as a month in advance at the beautifully appointed homes of four local families – John and Christy Ross, Brandon and Sha Conway, Bo and Amy Walker, and Mike and Karen Patterson – as well as at Outreach of Love Church. Walker said the event aims to raise at least $1,000 for the Legends Museum – its sole source of funding outside of membership dues and donations. “Each home was so spectacular and everyone seemed to enjoy them,” Walker said. “I think we did good for the Museum and we look forward to next year!” Santa was afloat in the pool at the home of John and Christy Ross during the Christmas Tour of Homes Dec. 5.

Springtown trained – Peaster proud Three coaches with SHS backgrounds lead the Lady Hounds BY MARK K. CAMPBELL A trio of Peaster coaches is having stunning success using training and skills learned decades earlier when they were Springtown athletes and coaches. Autumn Threet, Carol Ann Warren, and Emily Evans all were Lady Porcupines before accepting positions at PHS. They just got back from taking the Peaster volleyball team to the state tournament. Springtown roots Head Coach Threet was Autumn Summers when playing volleyball and basketball at Springtown High. She was talented at both, being the district MVP setter in volleyball and All-District twice in basketball. Every team she played for before graduating in 2001 went to the playoffs – but she said she really wanted to reach the state level, and that did not These three coaches with Springtown roots – (l-r) Emily Evans, Autumn Threet, and Carol Ann Warren happen. she earned a scholarship to play at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith; that team reached the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament. From there, Threet transferred to Henderson State – also in Arkansas – for two more scholarship years. She still holds the HSU record for most aces in a set with 12. Warren, an assistant at Peaster, was Carol Ann Carlisle; she married another standout Springtown athlete, Keith Warren. As a Lady Porcupine, Warren, Class of 1987, was one of the best ever. She played volleyball, basketball, tennis, and track and ventured into the postseason often in the mid1980’s. Warren was the district high jump champ in1987 and is a member of the SHS Hall of Fame. Evans – Emily Culwell then – graduated from Springtown in 1999. PLEASE SEE THREE, PAGE 5A.

Christmas on the Square returns Sat. Annual celebration ready to go BY MARK K. CAMPBELL It’s year No. 14 for Springtown’s Christmas on the Square. This year’s event runs from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and, as usual, is jampacked with things to do. Right off the bat, Santa Claus arrives at 11. Vendors will offer all kinds of unique Christmas gifts. A bounce house and petting zoo are just a couple of places where excited children will have a blast. Finding something to eat will be easy since food vendors will provide all sorts of grub.

Christmas on the Square’s entertainment is always top notch and this year is no different. Dancers and choirs and singers provide non-stop cheer from the main stage. A stop-down event arrives at 2 p.m. when the Bonus Bucks winners are drawn. Those present when names are drawn can win one of five $100, one $200, or, the biggie, one $300 in funds to spend locally. Expect the usual festive atmosphere City Manager Doug Hughes (left) and Mayor Tom Clayton display a commemorative blanket to be around the famed Tabernacle – that’s sold at Christmas on the Square. Available in three colors, the throw is $50 and details buildings from Christmas on the Square 2015. Springtown’s past. Proceeds go toward the Tabernacle restoration. Photo by Mark K. Campbell

Deputies located the child later that night at Harwell’s home. The girl’s father took her to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth where she made an outcry to a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner that Harwell had sexual intercourse with her. According to the probable cause affidavit, Harwell admitted to investigators he had sex with the 13-year-old girl, whom he said claimed to be 16 years old. The pornography charge comes with an additional $15,000 bond, bringing Harwell’s total bond to $120,000.

Dentist part of state’s Career Cafe program BY MARK K. CAMPBELL At lunchtime, Springtown Middle School students got a taste of what it’s like to be a dentist from longtime doctor Larry Murphy. A visitor to the school’s Career Cafe – a program, part of ACHIEVE TEXAS 16 that introduces students to possible future jobs. Seventh and eighth grade students, broken up in small groups by Counselor Tammie Mueller, are visited. Dr. Murphy told two groups of 25 about dentistry. He detailed how he became

interested in the health science field and what kind of training and education was involved. Murphy also mentioned what kind of salary dentists can earn and the job outlook for dentists. Mueller said, “He gave the students great dental health information, and explained what a typical day in his life was like.” Several other parents and community members have taken part in the program that helps children choose career paths, Mueller said. House Bill 5 requires the program for all eighth graders.

Three former SHS coaches successful in Peaster, reach volleyball Final Four Peaster reached the state tourney in Irving with a marvelous record of 46-1. However, in the 3A semifinals, Goliad ended the Lady Hounds’ season 3-1 with every game close. Fans – many from Springtown, Threet noted – filled the stands, cheering for Peaster,

Evans said she was enjoying coaching in Anna with her husband. Threet contacted her about a job opening, but “I really didn’t entertain the idea because I was happy where I was,” Evans said. However, her mother died in February 2013. Evans said, “I knew that I wanted to move closer to home to be near the family.” She contacted Threet – both had attended SHS together – and discovered the Peaster position was still open. With an old classmate and a former coach in Warren already there, “I knew that it would be a great experience,” Evans said.

As a Lady Porcupine, she played volleyball, basketball, softball, and track. Culwell was a member of the inaugural Springtown softball team and was a four-year letterman. In college, she focused on academics and earned a P.E. degree.

Peaster Coach Carol Ann Warren shares a moment at the state volleyball tournament with daughters Keller and Kennedy, an All-Tournament selection. Evans echoed Threet’s thoughts: “It is somewhere that every athlete hopes to be.” When state became a reality after winning the regional tournament, Warren said she cried tears of happiness – for the players, fans, and her fellow coaches. “It is pretty special to be

there for their first state tournament as coaches,” she said. Evans said, “It was a special moment to be on the state tournament floor.” Threet said she was thrilled to be able to share the experience with her daughter: “That was a pretty cool mommy/ daughter moment.”

including Threet’s parents Jeanell and Sammy Summers, Warren’s parents CL and Ruth Carlisle, and Evans’ father Bob. Warren also lauded the support of Mary Jo Harms who “followed us all the way from preseason scrimmages to the state tournament,” SISD board member – and former coach – Jody Lowery and former PHS coach French. “It brought together longtime and new-to-the-town fans,” she said. Warren’s daughter, Kennedy, a sophomore, was named to the state All-Tournament team. And that’s just one of a bevy of volleyball honors that continue to pour in, Threet noted. Like all nine Lady Hounds earning Academic All-District berths. And, junior Ballard McKenna playing on the Red team in the Texas Girls Coaches As-

all being from Springtown is special. “I think that tie really gives us an edge. We were all taught the same way; therefore, our coaching values and styles are very similar,” she said. Warren noted, “Working with kids you have coached before pretty much puts all of you in the same train of thought.” She said plenty of other former Lady Porcupines are now coaching in North Texas including at Boyd, Brock, Venus, and Grandview. Former Porcupine athlete/ coach Chris Pennington is the Peaster athletic director. As for Threet, Warren, and Evans, they want to return to walk on that state volleyball court again. Threet said, “Although we came up short, it gave us a taste of what it was like and my girls are ready for another shot!”

Avoid getting browbeaten this Christmas

I

’m pretty sure I have discovered a Christmas present for the women – and maybe a few men – who have everything. After all, who doesn’t want their eyebrows to look better? Until I married a female, I had no idea how important things like eyebrows and eyelashes were. 1978 BRIDE: Ah, look at those long eyelashes on that sweet baby! 1978 ME: What baby? It’s been my experience that males don’t notice or much care about eyebrows or eyelashes – on anybody. However, it’s a really big thing to some. That fact was driven home when I came upon an “advertisement Q&A” in the back of a recent Texas Monthly.

The person being interviewed was a beauty conscious woman ironically named Natalie Plain. Really. She is the CEO of Billion Dollar Brow. Ms. Plain begins, “When I was young, my mom took me to a brow professional in Beverly Hills.” Now, I don’t know about you, but my parents did not take me to Beverly Hills when I was a child. We once went to Lake Texoma and camped out, using defunct electric blankets as flooring where you’d wake up the following morning with the control knob jammed into your back. At Beverly Hills, Ms. Plain said the experience made her feel “special and polished.” But things got away from her; later at college, she confessed that she had “over-plucked” and did not

look her best. Employing her American can-do spirit, she created a moisturizer called Brow Boost then expanded into more products. She kindly issued for ON YOUR keepinga tipyour MARK brows lookMark K. Campbell ing their best: “ S y m m e t r y, symmetry, symmetry.” This is not advice that former Congressman Jim Wright followed certainly. Ms. Plain must’ve bolted up-

right in bed screaming whenever she dreamt of the wild-browed public servant. Wright certainly could’ve used Ms. Plain’s BDB Brow Buddy. Or course, his Buddy would have to be gasolinepowered to mow through that eye maze. The Brow Buddy helps you find that elusive symmetry, because – let’s face it – you don’t want to look like an idiot with one brow flat-lined and the other resembling the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Fortunately many of us around here are eyebrow aware: “Texas fans have been some of the most vocal eyebrow enthusiasts around,” said Ms. Plain. I’m pretty sure that sentence had never existed in the history of mankind until

the December Texas Monthly. Billion Dollar Brow is on the cutting edge of brow fashion, noting that in some parts of the world, “there is some resistance to the ‘modern’ eyebrow,” Ms. Plain noted. Not in Texas! “Texas women are eager to embrace their best brows,” Ms. Plain said. So, if you’re struggling for a Christmas gift that shows you are a fashionfriendly person, you might want to consider something from Billion Dollar Brow. As for me, I’m waiting for Zillion Dollar Nose Hair or Quadrillion Dollar Ear Hair cosmetics where I am the reigning Jim Wright. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor and has been told he has been cursed with “thin lips.”

n his book, The Texas Rangers, Walter Prescott Webb continues to tell of the early days under Jack Hays. “Following the battle of Plum Creek, the Indian troubles, though ever present, assumed minor importance in comparison with events on the Mexican front. Between June 1841, and September 1842, Texas sent two expeditions into Mexico and Mexico sent two into Texas. “The first, most ambitious, and illadvised of these was the Santa Fe Expedition which left its rendezvous on Bushy Creek near Austin about June 20, 1841, bound for New Mexico. The Texans sanguinely hoped to take over Santa Fe by negotiation and open a trade from Texas similar to that flowing across the Plains to Missouri. “There was hardly a settlement between Austin and Santa Fe save wild

Ewen Cameron, was attacked near Lipantilican by General Canales with a force of two hundred regulars and five hundred volunteers or rancheros. The Mexicans, after 20 minutes of fighting, withdrew leaving three dead on the field. “The capture of San Antonio in March and the clash with Cannales in July should have warned the Texans to expect further trouble and caused them to increase the military force, but the poverty of the Republic drove relentlessly in the direction of economy and military insufficiency. “All the forces were disbanded save ‘the few spies under Capt. John C. Hayes at post San Antonio. Hays was ordered to increase his force to one hundred and fifty men and to keep them constantly and actively employed and spies and Rangers between the San Antonio River and the Rio Grande.

Indians of the Comanche and Apache breed. Part of the country is a desert, and water was scarce over several hundred miles of it. Not a Texan in the party had ever been to Santa Fe and not one knew more about its location than that it lay across the Plains to the northwest. “Thus poorly equipped and prepared, the Texans set out on what Andrew Jackson in a letter to Sam Houston later called ‘The wild-goose campaign to Santa Fe.’ After many trying adventures and much suffering the Texans reached their destination, broken, dispirited, desperately hungry, and almost dying with thirst. The Mexicans received them with open arms – à la Mexicano, threw them in prison and sent them to the interior. Occasionally one was shot, but the survivors gradually made their way back to Texas. “In retaliation, Mexico sent Gen-

“Again poverty ruled. Hays could not increase his force because the men were too poor to arm and equip themselves and the state was too poor to pay those already in the service. “In commenting on the situation the secretary of war said, ‘Those who were willing to enlist, were for the most part utterly destitute of means to fit themselves for the field – the government was equally so – it could neither furnish the means to equip and mount a force, nor sustain them for any length of time in the field. The consequence was a second surprise of San Antonio.” This was reported on Nov. 12, 1842, in the Journals of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Texas, Seventh Congress. Paxton amends approach to resettlement of refugees

T

exas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Dec. 4 withdrew his request for a temporary restraining order to put a hold on the federal government’s plan to relocate Syrian refugee families in Texas. Paxton, as the state’s chief law enforcement officer, initiated the court action on behalf of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, the state agency potentially most involved with the resettlement process. In an explanation of his reasoning, Paxton cited the U.S. Refugee Act of 1980, a law requiring that the federal government consult with state authorities in advance of such relocations. Paxton said, in effect, that his request for the restraining order prompted the federal government to provide information

that he said would help resolve security concerns about the first group of refugees set to arrive in Texas. Still, however, Texas continues to seek a federal court injunction requiring the federal government to consult with state authorities before resettling refugees. According to the state attorney general’s office, Texas takes in roughly 10 percent of the refugees resettled in the United States, partnering with local volunteer agencies to help refugees transition to the state and pay associated costs. “Texas shouldn’t have to go to court to require Washington to comply with federal law regarding its duties to consult with Texas in advance,” Paxton commented. “Our state will continue legal proceedings to ensure we get the information necessary to adequately protect the safety of Texas residents.

during this interim and the remainder of my term in office, to make sure that assistance is provided.” During the hearing, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw testified that over the last four years more than 174,000 undocumented individuals had been arrested and booked into Texas jails. A.J. Louderback of Texas Sheriffs’ Association also testified, saying PEP — the Priority Enforcement Program of ICE, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, “significantly weakens how we protect the state.” Under PEP, ICE seeks the transfer of a removable individual when that individual has been convicted of an offense listed under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s civil immigration enforcement priorities, has intentionally participated in an organized crimi-

Patrick, who presides over the Texas Senate, said, “While securing the border is a responsibility of Washington, D.C., it is still a Texas problem. That’s why the Senate led the way during the last session to provide funding for border security at the highest levels in history.” Abbott takes group to Cuba Gov. Greg Abbott and first lady Cecilia Abbott are back in Texas after leading a group of two dozen members of the governor’s staff and economic development team and representatives of economic interests “with a stake in increased trade with and travel” to Cuba. The group included officials from the ports of Houston, Beaumont and Corpus Christi, plus Houston’s airports. News of the Nov. 30-Dec.

3 trip was posted by the governor’s office in a series of press pool reports by the Austin American-Statesman. In one of those reports, Cuba’s minister of foreign trade and investment told Gov. Abbott that he believes “the normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States is an inexorable process that won’t be reversed no matter who is elected president in 2016.” “This is an historic process,” said Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz. “It's historic because it’s been a long time and a lot of administrations and there weren’t any changes, and now is when the changes are taking place. We think this process is irreversible, it’s not going to be taken back.” Veteran state reporter and legislative analyst Ed Sterling is member services director for the Texas Press Association, whose 518 member newspapers have combined circulation of 3.7 million.

Young ladies hoops squad battling ‘growing pains,’ injuries Gideon shatters 3-point shot record BY MARK K. CAMPBELL The beginning of the 201516 basketball season for the Lady Porcupines has been anything but smooth. Springtown (2-12) has not only been fighting stout nondistrict foes but is fending off injuries and something that only time can heal – inexperience. The year started with three starters out injured, Coach Susan Croft said. Also hobbled was 3-year starter Adrienne Easter who is still recovering from an ACL injury suffered over the summer. Only recently has senior Chayton Seabourn returned to the court; she tore the labrum in her shoulder and has been enduring extensive rehab and physical therapy, Croft said “She has just recently gotten

back into the rotation as our first player off the bench,” the coach said. The injury bug refused to relent. Last year as a sophomore, Khristin Mote was a First Team All-District pick. This season, she has missed several games because of a tonsillectomy. Croft said Mote has just now returned to the hardwood. As if that freakish array of injures were not enough, when the Lady Porcupines did hit the court, often a state-ranked team awaited them. Springtown finally broke into the victory column at the Jacksboro tournament. And, there, a record-breaking event occurred. The first win came over “scrappy” Dublin. “They had only lost to Peaster by 12 points the night af-

ter Peaster blew us out of the gym,” Croft said. The Lady Porcupines trailed the entire game. But a big push over the final minutes gave SHS a 38-33 victory. “I was very proud of our kids for fighting the entire game to get that W,” Croft said. The new Springtown High record came later that night against Electra when Molly Gideon poured in 8 3-pointers en route to a personal best 32 points. The former record or 7 was held by Brooklyn Dauenhauer. The Lady Porcupines won easily – 69-16. At halftime, Gideon had 5 bombs already and her teammates wanted to see her set a new mark, Croft said. “They were determined to help her break the record,” the

coach recalled. For that to happen, they had to get the sophomore the ball – and her teammates did. “Numerous times our post players would get a rebound in the paint and, instead of going back up, they would pivot out and find Molly at the 3-point line,” Croft said. Gideon got the record with 3 minutes remaining in the game. “The entire team – bench included – exploded with excitement for her. It was a pretty powerful moment to see the unselfishness of the team,” Croft said Next is another tourney, at Poolville. “We are finding the positives in every game and using those to build for the next one so that by the time district Senior Harley Williams has not played with many regurolls around, we’ll be ready,” lar starters this season because of numerous injuries slowing Lady Porcupines. Two days later, Springtown (3-5) lost a killer to Frisco Independence in double overtime, 59-58, in the opening game of the Sanger tournament. Later in that event, the Porcupines clubbed Collinsville 75-43 and Dallas Molina 91-33. More close games arrived. SHS bowed out of the Sanger tourney with an 89-86 loss to Sherman. At Glen Rose on Dec. 8, Springtown got edged 69-68. Against Azle, four players reached double digits. Kaleb Chesney and Trent Partain got 13 points each. Raul Medina added 12 points and Dawson Meek got 11, the latter adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. In the double OT slugfest with Independence, Meek came up big again with 21 points. Partain got the double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Eight different Porcupines scored in the game. Against Collinsville, SHS made 12 3-pointers with Logan McPherson nailing 5 of them; his 17 points was team-high. In the Molina blowout, Grant Murray and Raul Medina rained in 5 bombs each. Murray finished with 21 points; Median and Chesney got 15 each. Against Sherman, Chesney led the way with 22 points. Also reaching double digits were Partain with 18 and Murray with 16. Movie Man

Thursday, December 10, 2015 Springtown Epigraph

Rocky’s return packs an emotional punch Sylvester Stallone is pulling off a late career miracle. And, since the Movie Man is a Stallone fan, he’s happy about that. And, to begin this discussion of Creed, here’s a decades old happy story. About the film In the early spring of 1977, Movie Man and Movie Wife bought movie tickets for $2.50 each. Rocky was still in theaters and Movie Man and Movie Wife waited in line – again – to get in, even months after the boxing movie’s December 1976 opening. However, this was a special showing of Rocky: It boasted a sneak preview, a second, unnamed mystery movie. Back in those days, there was little information attached to the notice that a sneak was around. A simple newspaper ad would announce a chance to see an upcoming movie – maybe a “thriller starring today’s hottest actor” or, in this case, a “comedy by one of today’s funniest directors” or something like that. So, we shuffled through the line and enjoyed Rocky once more. Then, another movie began: Woody Allen’s colossal Annie Hall. It surely remains the best $2.50 the Movie Man ever spent. Now, about Rocky. Like Elvis Presley or the Beatles or The Exorcist (1973) or Star Wars (1977-83), you kind of had to be there to fully appreciate the Rocky phenomenon. The movie ran forever. Stallone became a star overnight, his story of refusing to sell his script unless he could star in it – even while he lived in near-squalor – told and retold. The main theme – “Gonna Fly Now” – became a monster hit, peaking at No. 1 in May of 1977, Bill Conti’s only Top 40 entry. The entire soundtrack was also a tremendous success. Of course, Rocky Balboa went on to more movies. In the second one in 1979, Rock defeated Apollo Creed. Then,

in 1982, Mr. T became famous as brute brawler Clubber Lang who beat then lost to Rocky. In Rocky IV (1985), Balboa faced evil Soviet fighter Drago, who earlier killed Apollo in a bout. By the time Rocky V (1990) came along – Rocky becomes a trainer – the series joined the Rolling Stones as the butt of many Steel Wheelchair/ Rocky XVIII jokes, jabbing icons for staying around too long. However, Stallone later gave Rocky a decent return with Rocky Balboa (2005, Movie Man No. 698, 6). Today, Rock is back for a seventh movie, Creed. Stallone has already won an acting award, from the prestigious National Board of Review as Best Supporting Actor. Yay for Stallone. The plot The son of the late Apollo Creed, Adonis (Michael B. Jordan, putting the pitiful Fantastic Four [Movie Man No. 1151, 3] behind him), desires a mentor and seeks out his dad’s old pal, Rocky Balboa (Stallone); but Jordan doesn’t want to ride his father’s coattails. Stallone is hesitant to take the job, but Jordan won’t take no for an answer. Soon, the duo is working together. Jordan trains under the name Johnson, distancing from being a Creed and

The rating There are some N-words and a couple of casual f-bombs. Surprisingly, the actual fights are not too bloody/gory until the final clash which gets plenty messy. The PG-13 is pretty stout. Summing up It’s a minor miracle that Creed is as good as it is. It’s made with love and seeing Stallone given another bow is truly heart-warming. Next up In the Heart of the Sea.
