WBAP reporter, two others injured in head-on crash on FM 51 By Natalie Gentry Farm Road (FM) 51 was shut down for more than an hour Friday evening, Dec. 5 following a head-on collision that sent two people to John Peter Smith (JPS) Hospital in Fort Worth via separate air ambulances. The wreck was reported at 7:46 p.m. near FM 2048 about five miles north of Springtown according to a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) report. A WBAP-owned Toyota Camry, driven by reporter Alan Scaia of Fort Worth was headed north on FM 51 when it was struck head-on by a Ford pickup driven by Lynis Parris of DeLeon. The pickup was southbound on FM 51 when it crossed the center line and collided with the Camry, according to the report. Scaia was flown to JPS Hospital in critical condition.

Photo by Joe Duty, courtesy Wise County Messenger According to DPS Trooper Adam Lawson, Parris sustained minor injuries and was driven by ambulance to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur where he was kept overnight. In addition, Parris’ passenger, Clara Quesnot, also of DeLeon, was flown to JPS Hospital where she was listed in stable condition. On Saturday, Dec. 6, medical staff upgraded Scaia’s condition to serious according to his mother Linda Scaia,

who flew in from her home in Ohio. “I want to thank everybody for their kindness and support,” she said. According to a story on the WBAP website, Scaia had recently been promoted to morning drive reporter. He had also been named as corespondent for Westwood One News, a new national operation. “It was very encouraging to get the word of Alan’s improvement,” WBAP News Director Rick Hadley, who vis-

In the aftermath:

ited Scaia Saturday afternoon, said in the story. “He is certainly badly hurt, but having seen the photos from the accident scene, we are relieved this is not much, much worse.” Friends, co-workers and former co-workers visited Scaia on Saturday, as well.

REACT volunteers assist victims of abuse and assault to find help By Natalie Gentry Kim Chilcutt and Karen Ewell of Parker County’s Responding to Every Assault and Crisis Team (REACT), a victim centered organization developed to assist those who have been affected by trauma and violent crime, spoke at the weekly Springtown Optimist Club meeting Dec. 9. REACT works closely with law enforcement officials to provide victims with information regarding their rights, needs, case follow-up, referrals, and support. The organization began in 1999 and currently has 20 members who volunteer their time and talents to assist victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, serious accidents, deaths, and disasters. Volunteers assist in follow-up contact

with the victims and also work on special projects as they arise. To become a volunteer, one must attend an academy and receive 30-40 hours of training relevant to the group’s services. They must also attend continuous monthly training through various presentations from the medical examiner’s office, county attorney, and grief counselors from North Side Baptist Church. This training is intended to provide the volunteer with information used to assist the victim or family members following a traumatic event or crime, as well as to provide comfort and understanding to those affected. They do not provide counseling, but act primarily as an information and referral agency.

REACT volunteers are often requested to provide their services by the law enforcement agency at an incident scene. Once the team arrives on scene, they identify the needs of those involved and use their training and empathy to ensure those needs are met. Other than becoming a volunteer, residents can help by donating supplies such as clothing, blankets, and even teddy bears; making a financial donation; spreading the word about REACT; assisting in training and monthly meetings; or sponsoring refreshments at the monthly meetings. For more information on REACT contact Freedom House at 817-5967543 or the Weatherford Police Department at 817-598-4325.

SHS Ag Advocacy team competes at State By Natalie Gentry Springtown High School’s (SHS) Future Farmers of America (FFA) Agriculture Advocacy Team competed in the State tournament Dec. 6. The team, comprised of senior Madyson Nolte, sophomore Sophia Kelley, and freshman Raynee Henderson, placed sixth in the preliminary round – one spot away from advancing to finals. Although the team didn’t get a shot at a championship, sixth place in a state with more than 200 teams competing is something to be proud of. Ag Advocacy is one of the Leadership Development Events (LDE) FFA members can complete in during the fall. LDEs focus on creating situations in which contestants demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of agriculture and the FFA organization. The Ag Advocacy contest is designed to inform the general

public and consumers about the importance and value of the agriculture industry and how agriculture impacts human lives. The students must create their presentation to incorporate the theme set out for them each year by FFA. This year the theme was “Marketing our Nation’s Agricultural Products.” The SHS team’s presentation focused on the agricultural industry coming together to market the nation’s agricultural products. As business and money is a driving force in agriculture, the team stressed the need to not forget about our neighbors and do our best to support all areas of agriculture – not just one side or one segment of the industry. “I am so proud of these girls,” SHS FFA sponsor Emily Grant said, “It is such an accomplishment to advance to state. “They have put in the time and effort to be successful and they were,” she continued. “Their knowledge of the agri-

cultural industry has grown so much, and they are all capable of making an impact in this industry.” Grant said the students spend a lot of time practicing and making sure every facet of the presentation is perfect.

In addition to memorizing an eight-minute presentation, the girls had to demonstrate their knowledge of the agricultural industry and answer questions from the judges. Those questions may be about anything related to agriculture.

This is the second year Nolte and Kelley have competed at the state level in the same event. They and team mate Henderson beat three teams at the district level to advance to Area competition, and then another 13 teams at Area to advance to State.

Area sales tax revenues remain strong by carla noah stutsman Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced Wednesday, Dec. 10, that state sales tax revenue in November was $2.66 billion, up 10.7 percent compared to November 2013. “The growth in sales tax collections was fueled by increased remittances from both business and consumer driven sectors,” Combs said. “The gains were led by oil and natural gas-related sectors, while collections from retail trade and restaurants also rose strongly.” Combs will send cities, counties, transit systems, and special purpose taxing districts their December local sales tax allocations totaling $645.9 million, up 11.4 percent compared to December 2013. The sales tax figures represent October sales reported by monthly tax filers. Locally, only the town of Lakeside and the city of Pelican Bay recorded decreased

revenues for the month of December when compared with December 2013. In the case of Lakeside, the loss – though it looks huge on the surface – really only represents a drop in the town’s sales tax bucket. Lakeside’s December sales tax revenue of $10,911 is, indeed, 35.15 percent less than its December 2013 check for $16,826. But because of a voter-approved one percent sales tax rate increased passed in 2013 to offset property taxes, the town enjoyed near 100 percent monthly increases in revenues during calendar 2014. In fact, December’s decrease still leaves the town of Lakeside’s total sales tax revenue for 2014 – $165,181 – a full 96.44 percent more than its 2013 total sales tax revenue of $84,084. Pelican Bay is the only other local municipality to record a decrease in sales tax revenue for December.

The Bay’s December check for $1,551 is 6.64 percent less than its December 2013 check for $1,661. But for calendar 2014, the city’s total sales tax revenue of $19,086 is 1.34 percent higher than in calendar 2013, when it recorded $18,833 in total sales tax revenue. Springtown saw the smallest increase – just 0.21 percent – for December among cities in the area, but it’s an increase nonetheless. The city’s December revenue check is for $78,112, compared with December 2013 revenue of $77,942. It’s total sales tax revenue for calendar 2014 is $924,921, up 3.12 percent from calendar 2013 revenues of $896,910. The city of Azle received $170,482 for December, up 7.51 percent from December 2013 revenue of $158,563. Total sales tax revenues for calendar 2014 are $2,147,879, up exactly 2.0 percent from calendar 2013, when total revenues were $2,105,713. Parker County received a sales tax revenue check for $592,447 in December. That’s 8.16 percent more than its December 2013 check for $547,714. The county’s 2014 revenue of $7,265,242 are 4.63 percent more than in 2013, when its sales tax revenue was $6,943,522. State-wide, municipalities received $417,265,995 in

The District’s total revenue for calendar years 2013 and 2014 are tricky – it only collected one month’s revenue in 2013, but 12 months’ revenue in 2014. Thus, calendar 2014 revenues of $394,512 calculate to a 1418.32 percent increase over calendar 2013 revenues of $25,983. Next year, we’ll be able to see a true comparison for year-to-date collections for the MDD. The city of Sanctuary’s December sales tax revenue is $1,122, a 23.81 percent increase over December 2013 revenues of $906. Its calendar 2014 revenues of $14,715 are 9.68 percent higher than 2013 revenues of $13,416. In Reno, December revenue

sales tax revenues in December, up 10.66 percent from $377,059,141 in December 2013. For calendar 2014, those municipalities received $5,058,616,173, up 7.03 percent from $4,725,988,081 in calendar 2013. Give the gift of life

Taste of Springtown

Carter BloodCare bus will be at Christmas on the Square by Natalie Gentry The most important donation of blood is the one on the shelf when it is needed. With three major holidays so close together during this time of year, the number of car accidents inevitably rises and the demand for blood increases significantly. To help combat this shortage Carter BloodCare will host a blood drive at Springtown’s Christmas on the Square Saturday Dec. 13 from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The donation bus will be located in the southeast corner of the Square.

Blood donation is free for the giver and it keeps giving to the recipient because it saves lives. One unit of blood can save up to three lives and 600-800 patients every day require a blood transfusion. This could be the best gift given this year. In addition, Carter BloodCare is offering buy one, get one ticket vouchers for a Mavericks basketball game, plus a soft mini-basketball to everyone who gives blood in December. Go to carterbloodcare.org for more information.

Potential blood donors can begin volunteering at age 16 with a parent’s consent, and independently at 17. There is no upper age limit for giving blood. Volunteer donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they give. It’s also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. For more information or to schedule an appointment time for this Saturday, contact City Hall at 817-220-4834.

8A Porcupine wrestlers hit local mats By Mark K. Campbell The Porcupine wrestling team, under new coach Tye Adams, ventured to local mats. On Dec. 4 in Azle, the gathering was supposed to be a clash with the Hornets and Arlington Seguin. But the latter was dou-

ble scheduled and cancelled. Three Porcupines won: Caice Clark (145 pound class), Sam Lund (182), and Charles Emmert (195). In exhibitions, Springtown winners were Montana Harthcock, Cyrus Naal, Aiden Baxley, Mason Phillips, and

Clark. Two days later, the Porcupines headed to Boswell. First, SHS faced Vernon, losing the team tally 42-38. Desmond Cummings (126) and Jesse Springfield (285) were victors for Springtown. Springtown beat Richland

53-18 as Cummings, Preston Schneider (132), Mark Matkovich (138), Clark, and Lund all won. The hosts edged SHS 36-30. Clark, Lund, and Hunter Robinson (220) all carded victories against the Pioneers. Against Northwest, Cum-

mings, Lund, Robinson, Emmert, and Mason Phillips (285) defeated rivals. At home Dec. 9, Springtown shone in a district duals battle against Argyle and Saginaw. SHS beat Argyle 51-24. Earning wins were Baxley, Matkovich, Clark, Lund, Phil-

lips, and Springfield. Saginaw fell to the Porcupines 43-27. Cummings, Lund, Robinson, and Emmert led the way to the win over the Rough Riders. Next up is a trip to Weatherford Dec. 13 then back home to host Richland Dec. 15.

Sam Lund (top) picked up several victories in his recent bouts in the 182-pound class. Porcupine Hunter Robinson holds down a Hornet at the Azle High School gym Dec. 4. Photo by Mark K. Campbell

Porcupine boys battle in Jacksboro By Mark K. Campbell The Porcupine basketball team ventured to Jacksboro and played five games in a tournament. Springtown (6-6) opened Dec. 14 with a 67-47 dashing of Godley. Five Porcupines accounted for a batch of points: Dawson Meek led with 16, Jared Green scored 12, and Triston Brawner added 10. Kruz Domingez hit for 9 and Trent Partain netted 8 points. Meek turned in a doubledouble with a team-leading 11 rebounds. SHS outscored the Wildcats 41 to 26 in the second half. Later that day, Springtown faced Muenster, the No. 1 team in 2A and a squad that the PorKruz Dominguez (2) looks downcourt led by teammate Jared Green (23) at the SHS cupines would see twice in the gym. Photo by Mark K. Campbell tourney.

Ladies best tourney hosts in Jacksboro Springtown won a close one and lost a close one at the Jacksboro tournament. The Lady Porcupine basketball squad opened with a 57-45 loss to Windthorst in a game that was tied at 29 at halftime. Team leader Brooklyn Dauenhauer paced SHS in points with 22, steals with 5, and blocks with 3. Kendyl Dean added 8 points and Molly Gideon scored 5. Springtown’s top rebounder was Khristen Mote with 8. The close loss came to Graham, 48-47. Dauenhauer’s 14 points and

6 steals paced the Lady Porcupines. Adrienne Easter scored 8 while Bailey Willet, Gideon, and Mote netted 6 each; the latter’s 4 rebounds led SHS. On Saturday, Dec. 6, Springtown won a close one, 40-38. The Lady Porcupines led 27-17 at the half. Dauenhauer had another strong game – she led SHS in points with 17, steals with 6, and rebounds with 4. Easter scored 7 points and so did Gideon who also was the top stealer with 5.

Rivals have had no answer this season for veteran Lady Porcupine Brooklyn Dauenhauer who regularly reaches double digits in scoring. Photo by Mark K. Campbell

In this pool play game, SHS struggled to score, losing 43-18. Green and Meek both scored 6 points and Ryan Neal and Kaleb Chesney got 3 each – that accounted for all the Springtown scoring. The next day, pool play ended with a 63-48 win over Paradise. Chesney led with 14 and Meek added 13 points as the Porcupines scored consistently with quarters of 16, 15, 15, and 17. Raul Medina added 10 points. Four SHS athletes grabbed 8 rebounds each: Austin Bauman, Partain, Meek, and Chesney. In bracket play, Springtown beat Millsap 57-44 as Green and Dominguez each tallied 11 points. Logan McPherson netted 9 while Partain and Meek scored 8 points apiece.

Medina and Dominguez led with 6 boards each. Next was another clash with Muenster. Springtown scored more points this time but still fell, 43-29. Meek was selected to the AllTournament team. On Dec. 9, Springtown hosted Glen Rose and tumbled 6829. Meek and Medina accounted for most of SHS’ points, scoring 10 and 8, respectively. Meek also had 10 rebounds for another double-double. He blocked 2 shots. The Tigers put the game away in the second period by outscoring the Porcupines 23-2. Going just 2-of-17 from three-point land hurt Springtown; Medina made those two bombs.

God’s timing is perfect, you just have to wait

D

o you ever find yourself waiting? You know, like a kid waiting for Christmas ... a nine months pregnant woman waiting for D-day ... a husband waiting at Macy’s (or a wife at Cabela’s). Or maybe your waiting is for a dream; something you have wanted, wished for, prayed for, maybe even planned and prepared for. And still you wait. Favorite daughter and I have sung together since she was a toddler on my lap at the piano while I played and we sang. Hundreds of songs and dozens of venues later, we arrived at her senior year in high school. We had just learned the Charlotte Church/

Josh Groban arrangement of “The Prayer,” and sang it at a local community gathering (Chamber of Commerce, I think; it was 9 years ago). It was an immediate hit and became a much requested duet around our hometown. From that very first performance, people began asking us to record it. About 5 years later, we finally recorded it, but with two kids in college at the time, I couldn’t afford the licensing to release it. So, it sat simmering in my digital recorder for 4 more years. We FINALLY released it in July of this year. There really hasn’t been a LIFE MATTERS public announcement other than my Facebook and Twitter feeds. We are Gerry Lewis not looking to go on the road, but we would love for people to have it and, com/distant-music/ if we manage to sell our supply, we I’m not writing to sell

are going to use the proceeds to fund a mission trip to Punjab, India that we are going on in 2016. To check out the music and/or purchase, please go to http:// drgerrylewis.

I’m writing to encourage you not to give up on God-given dreams. I used to dream of traveling the world and singing for thousands. I finally concluded that dream originated with me, not with God. But the dream of encouraging people through the gift of music, as a part of my life’s mission of encouraging and empowering people in many ways, continues to be realized through the course of serving Him. Maybe your dream is bigger. I’m thinking about Dottie. I became her pastor in 1988, at Trinity Baptist Church in Tucumcari, NM. In early 1989, I had the privilege of being there when her husband, Roland, trusted Christ as Savior. Dottie had been waiting and praying for that day a product. for 40 YEARS!

Our lives and our dreams matter to God. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” That doesn’t mean we get what we want. That means that our desires will originate WITH Him when our hearts delight IN Him. By the way, through the Singing Men of Texas, since 2009 I have traveled the world and sung for thousands. I’ve just been a nameless member of a group, so God gets all the glory. His timing really is perfect. Azle resident Dr. Gerry Lewis is director of missions for the Harvest Baptist Association, which is headquartered in Decatur. He writes a blog at www.drgerrylewis.com.

Ghost town found on busy road south of Springtown

T

he site of a former town in a rural area always has a story to tell. It may not actually be a ghost town unless a few remnants of a previous life still exist. Such a community lies in Parker County just off Highway 51 between Springtown and Weatherford. My niece discovered the abandoned site while exploring country roads on a motorcycle with a friend. She took photos of historical markers which gave me enough information to search on the Internet for more. The town was called Cartersville, and was established in 1866, just a year after the Civil War ended. It was named after Judge W. F. Carter, one of three men who constructed a flour mill there for use by farmers in the surrounding area. The other two men were Henry C. Vardy and Thomas Parkinson. They built their flour mill on Clear Fork Creek, and the town grew up around it. The flour mill earned a reputation statewide for its product when in 1873 it was judged the “Best in Texas” at the State Fair

after the town began. Various people besides my niece have visited the site of Cartersville/ Carter, snapped photos of the state historical marker and some private marble monuand postPAGES FROM ments ed them on the WESTERN Internet. After my HISTORY niece told me J’Nell L. Pate about the site on Thanksgiving Day, I visited it myself. Following some Internet directions, with a friend I set out to locate any remaining structures and markers. One travels south on FM 51 two or three miles from Springtown and turns right on Carter Road. After about three or four miles, on the left is an open air tabernacle, some historical markers and an old boarded-

up, faded white, frame building. The latter was a church or school, or both. Old church pews can be seen in it. Inside the open air tabernacle in an alcove is an old piano that still has some keys that make a sound. Grass has grown up around the buildings, and a wire fence surrounds the tabernacle. This is what is left of Carter. A large, modern Faith Baptist Church at 1411 Carter Road is nearby. If you go to an intersection of Carter and Prather, you have gone too far. One of the stone markers reveals that an H. C. Vardy Flour Mill burned on November 14, 1891. It is not clear if this is the same mill owned by the three men or a different one that Vardy later operated alone. Another marble marker relates that “A gun fight at this location ended a cattlemen's feud in 1873 – the man of the house was left dead in the yard while the other man, badly wounded, rode away unassisted.” Another small marker said that W. A. McLaughlin saw Indians pass and later learned they had stolen the Davis boy and girl.” Population dwindled when people

of Texas, located in Houston that year. At its height, the community had two main streets, Main Street and College Avenue. The latter implies that a college existed. Small towns often created schools or colleges because of the residents' strong interest in education. (The present Texas Christian University began in 1873 as a small Add-Ran Male and Female College in Thorp Springs, a tiny community near Granbury. It was named after brothers Addison and Randolph Clark who started it.) In addition to the “college,” the town of Cartersville had a blacksmith shop, corn mill, cotton gin, the flour mill, a saloon and a general store. A school and two churches served the local families. The name changed from Cartersville to Carter in 1888 at the request of the postal service. Two towns named Carterville (no “s”) existed elsewhere in the state, so the Parker County one was shortened. The post office remained active until 1907, when 75 people lived there. Accounts say that the first post office was established in 1867, only a year

moved away to larger communities to work, notably Weatherford, ten miles south. By 1920 Carter became a ghost town. One account said that a tornado struck, destroying many of the buildings. The two other Texas towns with similar names are a Carterville located in Harrison County in East Texas northwest of Marshall and a Carterville located in western Cass County, bordering Arkansas on the east. The latter is not a ghost town because it had 39 people in the 2000 census. The tiny bit of information gleaned about the Parker County Cartersville/ Carter certainly shows that the community had a story to tell. It makes one wish for more. If anyone in the area knows more of the history, you can email me at jnellpate@charter.net and perhaps I can share it in a later column. A Carter reunion funded one of the markers, but it was put up many years ago. Perry directs state agencies to screen employees

G

ov. Rick Perry on Dec. 3 ordered state agencies to check the employment eligibility of current and prospective employees by using E-Verify, an Internetbased system that allows employers to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States. Perry also urged Congress to pass legislation “to provide the resources necessary to secure our southern border.” Perry’s announcements come in the wake of President Obama’s executive action on immigration on Nov. 20. At the time, in a national broadcast, Obama said he would take various actions because of the protracted unwillingness of Congress to pass an immigration reform bill that addresses the legal status of millions of undocumented workers employed in Texas and other states by American business owners. A White House news release lists three elements of the president’s executive actions: 1. Cracking down on illegal immigration at the border to increase the chances that anyone attempting to cross illegally will be caught and sent back; continuing the surge of re-

sources that effectively reduced the number of unaccompanied children crossing the border illegally last summer; and centralizing border security command-and-control. 2. Deporting felons, not families to focus on the deportation of people who threaten national security and public safety; and directing immigration enforcement to place anyone suspected of terrorism, violent criminals, gang members and recent border crossers at the top of the deportation priority list. 3. Accountability through criminal background checks and taxes, to hold accountable those undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for more than five years and are parents of U.S. citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents. Meanwhile, Perry said, “It’s clear now more than ever that Congress must finally pass a bill that dedicates the necessary resources to securing our border, once and for all. Without border security, immigration reform is a fruitless exercise.”

Letter to the Editor Christmas home tour success

Police force broken

Dear Editor, The Christmas Home Tour at Still Waters Retreat was a tremendous success. The event was a fundraiser for Springtown Legends Museum for which museum members are appreciative and grateful. Many folks are to be thanked: the staff at Still Waters; Tour of Homes Chairperson Amy Walker; decorators Lori Randolph, Mary Jo Harms and Alisia Ellis; actors Terry Walker, Cindy Rogers, and Dean Strickland; and Mr. and Mrs. Claus, Bill and Candy Foster. Also: event workers Melvin and Sheila Woody, Laurie and Julia Moseley, and Gloria Elam; the Methodist Church and Ladies Home Extension Club; Brookshire’s; bus drivers Michelle and Doug Deweese; Hilltop Family Church, Church of Christ; First Baptist Church; and David Ward. If anyone was left out, I’m sorry. It was such a massive amount of work and all did a great job. Gloria Elam Springtown Legends Museum President

Dear Editor, I’m asking the American public to open their eyes! The police force is broken. Who is in charge? What worked 15, 20 years ago in law enforcement is gone. There is a lack of training, prevention, and oversight; it is long gone. This is a total shame for those that wear a badge. The number is now three that justice was not sued in the right procedure. In each one, those that did wrong should have lost everything – job, pension, and each one should have served time behind bars for at least 20 years wthout parole. It is a total shame where this nation is headed – down the toilet. Frederick Delorge Boyd

Movie Man

Thursday, December 11, 2014

It’s a wonderful Christmas movie list What are the best Christmas movies? It’s a genre that never dies, especially on TV. Annually, Lifetime churns out holiday themed films nonstop. They are almost always forgettable. This year’s real stinker is Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever. With regularity, Christmas movies get released theatrically, too. They come and go, few have staying power. This year has produced what could be the all-time holiday turkey, Saving Christmas starring Kirk Cameron. When the movie got lit up by critics – religious and secular – and moviegoers – religious and secular – Cameron ventured to social media to try to get its pitiful early reputation restored. That backfired. Instead, the trolls descended and Saving Christmas has been receiving an avalanche of negative publicity; it’s currently ranked on Internet Movie Database as the worst movie of all time. It is not doing the recent upsurge in Christian cinema any favors. So, what are the best Christmas movies? Some movies are eliminated from consideration because they take place at Christmastime but aren’t really holiday movies – Gremlins (1984), Die Hard (1988), Rocky IV (1985), and Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) which has a Christmas scene that debuted the classic song “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” (However, one movie on this list gets a big pass on that requirement, because…well, you’ll see.) There have been holiday horror movies (Black Christmas [1974, hailed as one of the first slasher movies; this version is far more popular than the 2006 reimagining]), some unfairly maligned Christmas movies (Jingle All the Way [1996, Movie Man No. 157, a 5 – it’s often found on Worst Christmas Movie lists; it’s not that bad]), some that are unjustly forgotten already (like Jim Car-

rey’s A Christmas Carol [2009, MM #850, 7]), and some that are fading (The Polar Express [2004, MM #586, 6]). Most curious of all is that there has been no good movie about the actual origins of the season, Christ’s birth. A recent major effort, The Nativity Story (2006, #694, 6), was quickly forgotten. (The best might be an animated short by Don Bluth, The Small One from 1978; it pops up on TV occasionally.) Not forgotten are these 10 classics, the best Christmas movies of all time: 10. Love, Actually. If you’re under 30, this is likely a staple on your TV. It’s an R-rated British movie that follows eight different people in the ramp up to Christmas. This 2003 film is veddy British which means there’s plenty usage of their favorite adjective, the f-bomb. Plus nudity and sexuality. But it’s a pretty funny romantic comedy with a terrific cast that includes Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, and Emma Thompson among others. Best scene Seeing veddy white Grant, as prime minster, dancing is funny and so is a subtitled lake scene. 9. Home Alone. In late 1990, Macaulay Culkin took over the world. As

a kid forgotten by his traveling family and left at home, he has to fend off a pair of bumbling thieves and does so ingeniously. This movie was a colossal

is really worth seeking out. Best scene In the ’47 version, little Susan (Natalie Wood) is sure Kris Kringle is Santa Claus and her beliefs are cemented when she hears him speaking Dutch to a little girl.

7. How the Grinch Stole Christmas. There is no more love-it or hate-it Christmas movie ever made. The Movie Man loved it, giving it a rare 9 and Best of Year in 2000. It is without question the funniest holiday movie ever made – it and Scrooged (keep reading). The Grinch is Jim Carrey unleashed, and he’s a riot. Best scene: The first glimpse into Carrey’s lair is loaded with funny lines and visuals. Later a scene mocking director Ron Howard is hilarious. 6. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Some movies become major parts of a family’s lifelong dialogue as witticisms are lifted from films. That’s the case with this second Vacation movie. Aside from the fact that it’s fun to see some now-major stars in small roles back in 1989 (Julia LouisDreyfus and Johnny Galecki [The Big Bang Theory]), this is the Chevy Chase show before he got weird. Best scene There are a ton of laughs here,

but the scene in the attic where Chase looks at home movies manages to be moving, too. 5. Elf. With Love Actually, this is the most recent movie on the list, from 2003. You never know what film will hit with audiences, but this one did big time. It’s full of one-liners still quoted annually at Christmastime: “Santa Claus! I know him!” “Did you hear that?!” “You sit on a throne of lies!” The ending could be better, but Will Ferrell hits a home run here. Sharing my story: Poolville author Lauren Boehm Lynch writes stories of farm-life, family, and fun by Natalie Gentry Local author Lauren Boehm Lynch loves the time she spends with her husband Tim on their Broken Road Farm in Poolville. In fact, she enjoys the country living so much that she is always looking for a new way to share the “farm experience” with others. Lynch has written a series of children’s books, a young adult novel, a romance novel, and a cookbook. Each work is imbued with the essence of the Texas countryside and emotion of the author. In addition she writes a monthly column for the Poolville Post that explores the happenings on the farm and keeps fans up to date through the blog on her website www.laurenboehmlynch.com.

they want.” Like many inexperienced writers, Lynch wasn’t prepared for the inevitable responses from some publishers. “At first I didn’t have a thick skin,” she said. “After a bunch of rejection letters I just put it up.” At the time only family had read the book and Lynch worried that their love for her may be clouding their judgment of her work. “I started to think maybe it wasn’t any good,” Lynch said. “when I look back I know I should have just kept trying.” It wasn’t until Lynch married Tim that she tried again. “He said ‘you need to get the book back out, this is good work’ she said. “He gave me the courage to start again, to send it in and here we are.”

“The Storyteller” Lynch has always found a way to express herself through words. “My mamaw saved poems I wrote when I was a kid,” she said. “when she passed away I found them; she had saved them.” “There is just something about telling stories, I just love it,” Lynch continued. “I’ve always kept a journal and I’m an avid reader as well.” In an unusual twist though, Lynch’s favorite genre to read isn’t what she writes. “I love murder mysteries and I [for the most part] write children’s stories,” she said.

“Detour” During the time the manuscript sat in the closet Lynch stumbled upon and found joy in another career. “I never planned to become a nurse,” she said. “I went with one of my friends to take the test on a whim.” “I passed it and thought, ‘yeah I can do this,’” Lynch continued. “I absolutely loved it.” Lynch worked in the emergency room at John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth and later at a pain clinic. “When I retired and we moved out to the farm I decided to pick the book back up and try writing again,” she said.

“A Long Way Home” Lynch’s success didn’t come overnight, her first attempt at getting published in her late twenties didn’t go as planned. “A long, long time ago I started writing and I just didn’t have a lot of encouragement,” Lynch said. “I went through the whole process of sending the publishers query letters and the first three chapters, and all the things

“A Brave New World” Lynch wouldn’t trade life on Broken Road Farm for anything now, but the initial move to the country wasn’t something she took lightly. “I grew up in Azle and until I moved out here I never experienced life on a farm,” Lynch said. “My family had some land, but it wasn’t Lauren Boehm Lynch shares some affection with one of the goats on Broken Road Farm – the seta farm. Photo by Natalie Gentry “I was definitely more ‘town’ than ting for much of her writing.

‘country’” she continued. “There was a distinct fear factor with the move.” The early days on the farm and her experiences are what led Lynch to start her website and column. “My stories are about all the things that happened when we moved, and my experiences.” In fact the move and life on the farm has inspired all of her work in one way or another. “With Tim’s encouragement I pulled my novel back out of the closet, reworked it into a western, and sent it off again,” Lynch said. This time her book was accepted by a publishing house who also accepted the three children’s books that followed.

The “Down To The End Of The Road And Back” series includes “Working As A Team,” “The Yellow Butterfly,” and “The Wasp Sisters.” “Then as I was planning to submit ‘Nigh Critters’ I met another author online who was published through Fountain Blue Publishing and absolutely loved them,” Lynch said. “So I sent it to them to see what would happen.” The new publishing house accepted the book and Lynch made the move to Fountain Blue. The new firm allows Lynch more say in the look and feel of the books. “The first publisher provided an illustrator for the first two children’s books,” she said. “[The style] just didn’t fit with us.”

At Fountain Blue Tim Lynch, Lauren’s husband, creates the illustrations. “The Story of My Life” Every piece of writing that Lynch creates reflects the couple’s life and much of it is recorded on the website. I update the website weekly with recipes, author news, the store, Farmer’s Wife column entries, or photos of the farm,” Lynch said. “Recipes are usually shared every couple of weeks.” This is the first stop for fans to see what is coming up for the Broken Road Farm too. “I’m working on a new children’s book, “Snutter Butter the Kitten,” and a sequel to “Whispering Willows.” All of Lynch’s books are available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

Health & Wellness Prevent colds and flu before they start Though the holiday season is a joyous time of year, it’s also one when many people succumb to cold and flu. Spend-

ing so much time indoors in close proximity to others can increase a person’s susceptibility to flu and cold, so it’s no

surprise that the holiday season, when many people spend lots of time celebrating indoors with family and friends, marks the unofficial start to cold and flu season. Despite what Mom might have told you about going out into the cold with a wet head or leaving home without wearing a coat, such actions do not increase your risk for cold and flu. But being cooped up indoors, where germs from others who are sick can fester, can increase that risk. gle Crest Villa where there’s always Cold weather also can be hing fun going on. Police warn of IRS scam Citizens throughout the City of Weatherford and Parker County intermittently have reported phony phone calls to the authorities. Reports say the caller purports themselves as agents of the Internal Revenue Service. At times the caller may try to convince victims they are legitimate agents of the IRS in an attempt to solicit money for unpaid taxes. These scare tactics are generally used against the victim by threatening criminal action or jail time. According to Lisa Lake, a consumer education specialist with the Federal Trade, there are several

ways to recognize these types of scams and foil attempts to extract money: Scammers will often: • call you. But when the IRS contacts people about unpaid taxes, they do it by postal mail, not by phone. • use common names and fake IRS badge numbers. • know the last four digits of your Social Security number. • demand payment via a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS doesn’t ask for either of these payment methods, nor will they ask for credit card numbers. • rig caller ID information to appear as if the IRS really is calling. • send fake emails that

look like legitimate IRS correspondence. • make a second call claiming to be the police or department of motor vehicles, rigging the caller ID information. To protect yourself from imposters who call, claiming to be from the IRS: • don’t provide any account or other personal information. Hang up the phone. • never wire money to a person or company you don’t know. Once you wire money, you can’t get it back. • if you owe - or think you owe - federal taxes, call the IRS at 800-8291040. IRS workers can help you with your pay-

ment questions. You also can visit the IRS website at irs.gov. • if you’ve already paid your taxes, call and report the incident to TIGTA at 800-366-4484. • forward emails from the IRS to phishing@ irs.gov. Don’t open any attachments or click on any links in those emails. • file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint. Include “IRS Telephone Scam” in your complaint. For more information on this type of scam and many others that are occurring throughout the country, please go to http://www.consumer. ftc.gov/scam-alerts.
