PD investigating former SISD resource officer Letter sent home with all students BY MARK K. CAMPBELL An investigation concerning an inappropriate relationship between a student and an educator is being investigated by the Springtown Police Department. On Dec. 11, Springtown ISD Superintendent Mike Kelley said the district was notified of “allegations of misconduct” by a former School Resource Officer (SRO). “As professional educators, there are certain allegations a student might make that must be taken seriously,” Kelley said in an email. The superintendent immediately contacted SPD, he noted in a letter that was sent home to every student in the district Dec. 11. That letter noted that incidents occurred “over a year ago” and that the possibility of “other similar incidents before or since” is also being investigated. SPD Chief Ed Crowdis, who is directing the investigation, said he could not name the former SRO and that no charges have been filed. “The investigation is current,” he said.

Under the Texas Penal Code, an improper relationship between an educator and student is defined as “sexual contact, sexual intercourse, or deviate intercourse with a person who is enrolled in a public or private primary or secondary school.” The offense is a second-degree felony. The letter sent by the SISD urged parents to consult their children and contact SPD if any concerns were detected. Kelley said in an email, “Our counselors are working hard to ensure that the individual(s) involved today are appropriately cared for.” In the letter to parents, Kelley said that other law enforcement agencies – “including the Texas Rangers” – will participate in a detailed review of the allegations. Kelley also states in the letter, “I have faith that their [law enforcement agencies] collective efforts will lead to a fair and appropriate conclusion to their investigation.” He said the district would pro- Santa, who curiously resembled Mayor Tom Clayton, made plenty vide “full and complete cooperation of children happy during Christmas on the Square. Hundreds attend Christmas on the Square BY MISTY SHAW Springtown was filled with the sights and sounds of the season Dec. 12 as festival-goers turned out in droves for this year’s Christmas on the Square celebration. Attendees donned their most festive apparel and perused the many vendor booths while local performers filled the Tabernacle with holiday music. Santa Claus – who closely resembled Mayor Tom Clayton – was also in attendance. “It was very successful this year,” City Administrator Doug Hughes said of the festival. “We had more vendors than we had last year and most seemed like they had a very successful day and enjoyed the afternoon.” Though exact attendance is hard to estimate, Hughes said “it was a very large crowd throughout the day; last year was pretty successful but this year I think easily outdid it.” PLEASE SEE COTS, PAGE 4A.

Reno man dies in head-on collision BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN A head-on collision in the 13000 block of FM 730 South near Azle left a Reno man dead and a Weatherford man seriously injured Dec. 9. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased man as 45-year-old Donald Scott Hays of Reno. The cause of death is attributed to injuries Hays sustained in the accident. According to an accident report filed by the Azle Police Department, Hays was northbound at the wheel of a maroon 1999 Ford F150 pickup about 4:15 p.m. For an unknown reason, Hays’ vehicle went into the southbound lane of the roadway, where it struck a red

SHS tops All-Region Band placements again BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Other bands must marvel at the Sound of Springtown. Once again, talented musicians from Springtown High School placed more students in the Association of Texas Small School Bands All-Region Band than any other school. That’s the fourth year in a row that SHS has topped all comers. On Dec. 5 at Tolar High School, musicians from 40 Class 1A-4A schools converged to vie for places

on the elite Area contest list, set for Robinson High School – south of Waco – Jan. 9. At Tolar, Springtown placed a whopping 36 students on the All-Region Band. Nine of those who excelled will move on to the Area competition. That exceptional nine: • Ashley Levesque-Trujillo – oboe • Chanae Pitts-Richardson – bassoon • Jose Moreno – trumpet

• Peter Merts – trumpet • Jordyn Sonne – trumpet • Weston Plume – trombone • Michael Murphy – bass trombone • Jacob Matthews – percussion • Grant Tichel – percussion A high placement at the Area round in Robinson will earn the musicians a berth on the All-State Band that performs in San Antonio at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in February. A Culinary Christmas

Culinary Arts students at Springtown High School hosted their 6th annual Culinary Christmas event Dec. 11. Each student-selected recipe was tested by the class before they prepared enough to feed 200 people on the big day. “It’s a way to showcase the students’ skills,” said SHS Culinary Arts Teacher Kristi Hulme. “This is their moment.” The budding gourmands don their chef hats and invited family members and SHS staff to sample their appealing assortment of savory appetizers and holiday treats.

SHS student charged with felony assault BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

An incident that was first reported as a bullying event resulted in the arrest of a Springtown High School student for a first-degree felony charge. Amrin Lee Bailey, 17, was arrested by Springtown police Dec. 4 and charged with injury

to a child with intent to commit serious bodily injury. Bailey posted $20,000 bond and was released from the Parker County jail the same day. According to the probable cause affidavit, police were called to SHS by an assistant principal Dec. 2 regarding a

student who had been bullied at school. The victim, who is 14 years old, told police Bailey had accused him of “talking bad” about Bailey and grabbed the younger student’s right index finger and pulled it backward, while twisting it.

The incident occurred Nov. 18 in the school’s library. The victim’s mother took him to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, where x-rays revealed the boy’s finger and knuckle were broken. Police interviewed Bailey who admitted to committing

the act but said he didn’t mean to break his finger. In Texas, a person convicted of a felony of the first-degree is subject to a sentence of five to 99 years, or life, in the penitentiary and may also be assessed a fine of not more than $10,000. Amrin Lee Bailey

Police and city officials made the decision to temporarily open the South Stewart Street Bridge so southbound traffic could be diverted into Azle via South Stewart Street. The bridge was closed several hours later after the crash scene was cleared up and traffic was reopened on FM 730 South. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is the name for a medical condition that sometimes occurs several days after the drug heparin is administered. The condition is characterized by a low amount of platelets in the blood. Heparin is a blood thinning medication that is commonly used before surgical procedures. Thrombocytopenia is the medical term for low platelets. Platelets are blood cells that help the blood clot. When platelets are severely low, the body has a high risk of bleeding. The more common type of HIT often resolves when heparin is discontinued. Another life-threatening type of HIT occurs when the body essentially attacks itself by forming antibodies against the heparin-platelet complex. Medications called direct thrombin Inhibitors such as argatroban or fondaparinux (Arixtra) are commonly used alternative blood thinners given to those who have experienced HIT. Dabigatran (Pradaxa) is a different direct thrombin inhibitor that can be taken by mouth.

A bird in the house is way more than 2 in the bush

H

istorically, we have had many critters stop by our house then decide to come inside uninvited. It’s part of the joy of living in the country. Not once in our Hurst home did I find a snake in the dishwasher. In our country abode, it’s happened twice. We have scorpions, ants, and more kinds of spiders than you can count wandering past while watching Castle. It’s part of the landscape. Raccoons live in our wood burning stove when we’re not burning wood in it. Wild pigs mosey past – turkeys, too – and coyotes howl every night. Those guys, however, stay outside. But lots of other critters enter, so naturally, a question arises: Do we have walls or a roof to keep creepy

crawlies out? We do. We also have grandchildren who leave doors open, and maybe our foundation is not as steady or level as it was in 1978 when the house was built – skate boarders would love it. I’m not sure how the bird got in, however. We’ve had winged visitors before. We feed and water all sorts of birds, and they return our kindnesses by doing what birds do: sing, look pretty, and, apparently, occasionally fly into the house. It’s always startling. You’re heading to the coffee pot en route to the shower – unclad of course, another country life perk – when you get dive-bombed in your own kitchen. (I’m not sure if my nudity had anything to do with this incident or not. However, the bird, I’m sure, was equally startled at seeing a giant humanoid unencumbered by clothing

Letter to the Editor: I have to ask: Are you focused on what this very important time of the year is about? Please don’t get me wrong – giftgiving should take place. But here’s a few words on why it’s so important to keep focused. My sense is that within a wellintentioned zeal to remember that Christmas is a celebration of the birth

with a lawn chair. Yes, it was cool outside, my clothes-less body let me know. The bird – it wasn’t big, a finch I think – was not interested in escaping through the front door. So I opened the living room window, reaching past the table and rocking chair. It’s an old window and heavy; it also has no screen because a Great Pyrenees clawed it off during a thunderstorm. I wrenched it open and, as the bird buzzed again, tried to leap between the rocker and the end table. I almost made it. My big toe hit the edge of the table and sliced that digit open. Now I was in real potential Bride danger – bleeding on the carpet: unacceptable. I made another leap past scattered LEGOs from a recent grandchild visit and dug out a Band-Aid. It only slowed the blood flow.

So, there I was – naked, bleeding onto the kitchen floor, darting my eyes back and forth with a bird surely ready to attack again. All I wanted was a cup of coffee and to take a shower! I wrapped the toe in a slew of paper towels to stymie the bleeding. I noticed the bird appeared to be gone. I closed the door and hobbled over to shut the window, taking ultra-caution with the carpet. Then the bird zoomed past again, from around the bookcase area. So, I opened the window and door once more. Eventually, I got the critter into the sunroom where it hopefully found the gaping windows there. The old saying is true: It is bad luck to have a bird in your house. But it’s still better than a snake in your dishwasher. Mark K. ays learned on Sept. 10, 1842, that General Adrian Woll was approaching San Antonio with a large force and would enter it on the next morning. Apparently Hays had but few men with him, but he called the citizens together, made the best arrangements he could for the protection of the town, and with five men set out to find Woll’s army. He failed to find the enemy who had left the roads to approach the town through the hills, but when he returned to San Antonio about daylight on Sept. 11, he found it surrounded by a force estimated at 1,300. Hays wrote from Seguin on Sept. 12: “I have examined the camp and numbers, I think, correctly. I staid around town all day of the 11th, and

I can whip them on my own ground without any help, but I cannot take prisoners. Why don’t you come? – Huzza! Huzza for Texas!” In spite of this heroic note, the Texans were not without their tragedy.

Captain Nicholas Dawson came from LaGrange with 53 men and attempted to join Caldwell. He was cut off and surrounded by the Mexicans, who kept out of rifle range and turned the artillery on the Texans. Dawson raised the white flag, but it was fired upon. Only 15 of the men escaped, many of them being cut down after they had surrendered. The Mexicans had 60 killed including Cardova who had figured in the Cardova rebellion and in the plan for the Indian uprising. Woll now began his retreat, followed by the Rangers and by Caldwell’s force. By this time a company had been organized for Hays with Henry McCulloch as lieutenant; Ben McCulloch also had arrived and was attached to Hays’ company. Hays was described at this time by one of his men as follows: “Captain

All information will be reported every opportunity.” Hays and other couriers spread the word that San Antonio had fallen, and that the district court in session there had been captured. This war cry raised the citizens en masse, and soon many detachments under various local leaders were concentrating on Bexar. Matthew Caldwell raised the war whoop and brought 85 men; he arrived, as usual, among the first, and was elected to command the 225 men who had assembled. Woll advanced to the Salado with 200 cavalry and 600 infantry, and a general engagement was brought on. On Sunday, Sept. 17, Caldwell wrote that they had fought all day until the enemy retreated, carrying off their dead:

Abbott backs Cruz’s legislation addressing refugees

G

ov. Greg Abbott was in Wa s h i n g t o n , D.C., on Dec. 8 to participate in a news conference with U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who rolled out his proposed State Refugee Security Act. Abbott said in a Dec. 9 news release that Cruz’s bill “gives states and governors the tools to reject the resettlement of a refugee in that state unless there is adequate assurance that the refugee does not present a security risk.” “America is a charitable nation, but we cannot allow charity for some to compromise security for all,” Abbott said. “Congress intended to give states a substantial role in the refugee resettlement process. The federal government and resettlement agencies have sidestepped that role. My top prior-

ity as governor is to keep Texas citizens safe and this legislation helps me do that,” he added. Cruz’s bill, S. 2363, directs the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement to notify the state agency responsible for coordinating the placement or resettlement of an alien refugee not later than 21 days before the alien's arrival in the state. The bill states that no alien refugee shall be placed or resettled in a state if the governor certifies to the Office of Refugee Resettlement that it has failed, in the sole determination of the governor, to provide adequate assurance that such person does not present a security risk to the state. On Nov. 25, the Texas Catholic Conference, the public policy voice of Texas’ Catholic bishops, published a statement, saying, “We firmly believe that it is possible to maintain security at home while also welcoming refugees.”

Girls see tough foes in Poolville Mote named All-Tournament BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Starting a tournament with a state-ranked foe is a chore – especially when that team, Muenster, has already beaten you this year by 38 points. This time, the Lady Porcupine basketball team employed a different defense and, while Springtown still fell, the game was much closer.

Coach Susan Croft said, “We held them to 39 points with a 2/3 zone – something we rarely ever play.” Gabby Terry led SHS with 7 points. Later the day, offensive woes led to a 41-24 loss to Poolville, the tourney hosts. Khristin Mote – who would be named All-Tournament – paced the

Lady Porcupines with 9 points. A couple of defensive miscues allowed Tolar some easy third quarter layups which led to a 43-36 loss for Springtown. The game had been tied at 18 at the half. Mote scored 17 to pace SHS. The Lady Porcupines won their tourney finale against Petrolia, 44-28. A heavy press – led by Karlee Eddy and Bailey Willett – stymied the Lady Pirates early,

and Springtown built a big lead converting Petrolia turnovers. Molly Gideon, who broke the school 3-point record last week with 8, hit 4 en route to a team high 16 points. Eddy and Terry both added 8 points apiece. Next for the Lady Porcupines is a home game against Graham Dec. 18. Springtown will play in the Fort Worth Nolan Catholic holiday tournament beginning Dec. 29.

Boys losing close contests The Porcupine hoops record could easily be 9-5 instead of 4-10. Springtown has lost five games by a total of just 9 points. Factor in that SHS has played just one home game out of the first 14, and it’s easy to believe that the Porcupines will soon be posting more victories. At the Poolville tourney, SHS opened with a 50-43 win; Springtown recovered from a 13-9 first quarter deficit. Raul Medina paced the team with 16 points that included a trio of 3 pointers. Logan McPherson also made 3 treys to finish with 9 points. Dawson Meek got 10. Next in Poolville, the Porcupines faced Muenster and lost 47-37. Meek’s 12 points led SHS; Kaleb Chesney and Grant Murray scored 6 apiece. With a block and 9 rebounds, Meek was tops for Springtown. On Dec. 12, another close game went the other way as

SHS had rallied from being down 18-16 at the half to leading 33-30 after three quarters. Trent Partain paced Springtown with 13 points. Ryan Neal got 10. Later that day, Smyer edged SHS by 3 points, 50-47 in OT. Meek again was the top scorer (14) and rebounder (6). Medina scored 7 points, and McPherson added 2 bombs to score 6. On Dec. 14, the Porcupines faced Sanger and lost by 10 on the road, 56-46. SHS led 28-25 at the half. Chesney had the hot hand against the Indians, scoring a team-high 17 points; he hit 3 treys. Meek added 12 points and Medina 7. Coach James Rike noted, “It’s been a tough stretch.” Next up is Graham (Dec. 18), before the Christmas Break, then SHS plays Poolville Dec. It’s the season of giving – cautiously Some crooked charities feast on the kindness of others this time of year BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Beware. Not the word you want to see during this “most wonderful time of the year,” but it’s important. Whether for goodwill – it’s better to give than to receive – or for a tax deduction, many folks contribute to charities every year’s end. And many folks get scammed. Better watch out Dean Peyton knows about nefarious charities. The retired Azle resident is a generous giver and has been for years. However, his goodwill was upsot more than once when he discovered some of his contributions were not being used as properly as they should. Just recently, he received a heartfelt request from the American Indian Education Foundation’s “Backpack Drive 2015.” The group’s plea was for $26 to “help provide 28,000 Native American school-aged children with the basic tools to get a quality education.” Who wouldn’t want to help them out? Peyton, for one. He investigated the organization through online sites that examine various charities and discovered that the American Indian Education Foundation got an ‘F’ rating.

track of them. Among the most popular sites are charitynavigator.org and justgive.org. Charity Navigator rates charities from 0 to 4 stars. The worst of the worst end up on the dreaded “Donor Advisories” list. It’s a chore to keep track of charities. Many differing groups seek funds – charities covering causes like animals, military, the environment, health, religion, and even community development. In fact, many questionable charities are local outfits. Charity Navigator says a place out of Stillwater, Minnesota – population 18,225 – is the worst of the animal charities. One out of Chicago earned the highest praise, PAWS Chicago, 5 stars.

Agreement puts Texas Health on federal insurance marketplace Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) and Texas Health Resources (Texas Health) announced Nov. 24 they have signed an agreement for Texas Health facilities and Texas Health Physicians Group (THPG) practices to participate in the Blue Advantage HMO network. In 2016, all BCBSTX HMO plans offered on the federal Health Insurance Marketplace (HIM), where uninsured Texans can purchase affordable private health insurance, access the Blue Advantage HMO network. This is the only network that Texas Health and THPG are participating in that is offered on the HIM. Open enrollment began in early November and continues through the end of January 2016. The effective date for coverage under the Blue Ad-

vantage HMO network is Jan. 1, 2016. The network now gives Texans who sign up for a BCBSTX HMO plan accessing the Blue Advantage HMO network access to the 25 hospitals of Texas Health and THPG physician practices, with more than 830 physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and medical professionals throughout North Texas. “The plan puts the coordination of a patient’s care in the hands of a primary care physician, who manages care to see that each person gets the right care they need and coordinates with other providers in the network,” said Barclay Berdan, FACHE, CEO of Texas Health Resources. “The aim is to provide people with the right care, at the right time, in the right place – by the right caregiver. We think this will improve the

reliability, affordability and quality of care North Texans receive.” The Blue Advantage HMO network is designed to provide affordable, quality health care services to the uninsured and underinsured. The network, which is offered through BCBSTX HMO plans outside the insurance exchange HIM as well, affords members medical benefits whenever they access care through a participating Blue Advantage HMO network provider, which now will include THPG practices and Texas Health facilities. Additionally, BCBSTX’s Blue Advantage HMO is also available to individual and small group consumers both on and off the federally run Marketplace. “By participating, Texas Health hopes to help more uninsured North Texans find

affordable health insurance that allows them to see THPG physicians and have access to coverage at Texas Health facilities,” said Ron Long, Texas Health’s chief financial officer. “We believe Texas Health’s participation in this network supports our mission to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve and supports the effort to increase the number of eligible, but currently uninsured, Texans in the federal health insurance marketplace,” Long added. “This landmark agreement deepens our relationship with one of North Texas’ premier health care organizations, with whom we partnered in 2013 to launch one of the first Accountable Care Organization (ACO) agreements in our region.,” said Bert Marshall, president of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas.
