A black Chevrolet Cavalier ended up in a creek bed off Sabathney Road at approximately 10:11 a.m. June 23 after the driver lost control and slid off the rain-slick roadway. The vehicle was empty when firefighters from the Springtown VFD arrived. It was later discovered the driver was able to call his mother and was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle, where he was treated and released. Photo by Natalie Gentry
SISD to open early learning center for district employees

By Natalie Gentry The Springtown Independent School District (SISD) is joining the ranks of other school districts in North Texas that have opened quality daycare centers for district employees’ children. SISD Assistant Superintendent Mike Gilley has been working on this project for about a year now. He has visited similar facilities in both the Azle and White Settlement ISDs, and he’s also spoken with assistant superintendents in other districts about their programs. “Many assistant superintendents I’ve spoken to said this is the way they are going,” Gilley said. “When I would go out to recruit new teachers [daycare services] was a factor I was competing against,” he continued “It’s a huge draw; having a daycare right there within the district.” The results of these recruitment efforts and the research of other facilities have highlighted the fact that daycare services

Southwest Junior Olympic track meet a huge success By natalie Gentry The Southwestern Association Junior Olympic (SAJO) Track & Field Championships were in town June 19-2. According to Carl Hornback, manager of Porcupine Stadium, the meet was a huge success this year. “We had twice as many participants this year, and nearly three times as many entries,” said Hornback. “An entry represents a single person in a single event. One kid might enter three events, which would be one participant, with three entries.” This year’s event featured more than 2,200 participants, and more than 4,000 entries, Hornback said. “The meet went very smoothly, but very long (due to the sheer
number of entries),” Hornback said. “We had more than 1,000 kids participate in the 200 meter dash alone.” “Last year we broke five national records,” he continued. “To my knowledge, no records were broken this year, but the times and marks were very good.” The booster club had the opportunity to make extra money on concessions, and Hornback feels confident that businesses in Springtown saw a boost in sales on June 19-21. “I haven’t had a chance to poll the local businesses, but I’m sure they were busy,” Hornback said. Local kids competing in the meet included Kaitlyn Hill, Kendall Dean, Hunter Robinson, and Kelly Boyett.

they would call the police if he didn’t take Keahey to the hospital. Johnson eventually transported Keahey to an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) station in Springtown. Keahey was hospitalized for 10 days at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth for multiple skull and facial fractures. Johnson admitted he saved Keahey’s cell phone number using a gay slur as a contact name. During the plea hearing before U.S. District Judge Reed C. O’Connor, Johnson admitted he held and confined the victim against his will in order to conceal the violent assault and to remove Keahey’s severely injured body from the home where Johnson was staying. Prosecutors agreed to drop the hate crime count the 19-year-old faced in his indictment. “This was a senseless act of brutal violence that has no place in a civilized society,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Jocelyn Samuels. “We are hopeful that today’s guilty plea
brings some sense of justice for the victim and makes clear that the Department of Justice is committed to using every tool available to vindicate the rights of victims of violent crimes.” “The department will continue to work with our state, local and federal law enforcement partners to vigorously investigate hate crime allegations throughout the country,” she continued. “Violent crimes of this nature will not be tolerated, and I commend the victim for his continued cooperation in the investigation and prosecution of this reprehensible conduct,” said U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Saldaña of the Northern District of Texas. The investigation was conducted by the FBI, the Springtown Police Department and the Parker County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Cara Foos Pierce and trial attorney Saeed Mody of the Civil Rights Division. Johnson will remain in custody pending his Nov. 17 sentencing. He faces a maximum statutory penalty of up to life in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Public hearing for water reports slated June 26 Separate meetings to release area water documents by Natalie Gentry The City of Springtown has released it’s annual drinking water quality Consumer Confidence Report for the period of Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2013. This report is intended to provide residents with important information about their drinking water and the efforts made by the water system to provide safe drinking water. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has completed its assessment of the city’s source water. While the results indicate the presence of certain expected contaminants in the source water, none of the levels of those contaminants were found in levels that violated state requirements. A public hearing will be held at the regularly scheduled City Council meeting Thursday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m. at city hall, 102 East 2nd Street.
Availability Model report has been released for public comment by the Upper Trinity Groundwater Conservation District (GCD) and associated organizations. According to its website, the mission of the Upper Trinity GCD is to develop rules to provide protection to existing wells, prevent waste, promote conservation and provide a framework that will allow availability and accessibility of groundwater for future generations. The organization aims to protect the quality of the groundwater in the recharge zone of the aquifer, insure that the residents of Montague, Wise, Parker, and Hood Counties maintain local control over their groundwater, and operate the district in a fair and equitable manner for all residents of the district. The release of the most recent report begins a formal 45-day comment period for Groundwater A draft of the Northern all Groundwater Management Trinity/Woodbine Groundwater Area (GMA) 8 GCDs, regional The

water planning groups and the general public. The Upper Trinity GCD will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 26, at its district office located at 1250 East Highway 199 in Springtown. The draft report will be reviewed and public comment heard during that meeting. The comment period will conclude Monday, July 21. ell, that’s curious, I thought. Through the decades, I have found many things while jogging. Money. A ladder. Knives. Porn. Scissors. Car wrecks. And, most recently, a hammer. While I padded around my little track down from the house by the highway, most folks in passing vehicles don’t mess with me but occasionally there are some jerks. A few honk/wave and some try to be funny and pretend they don’t see me and edge over to the shoulder then, at the last moment, veer away. (Since I run facing traffic, I always see these morons and get way over.) I have jogged many years down
there, through wildflowers, rain, snow, and some mighty winds and heat. But I had never carried a hammer before. That day, I was tired and the rusty hammer was a bit and heavy, but I lugged it along the highway. That’s when the social experiment began. Hammer in hand, suddenly vehicles wanted nothing to do with me. Punks who might’ve tried to scare me in their ratty pickups moved away so far they hummed over the warning markings near the center stripe. Big rigs, ladies on phones, cable guys, it didn’t matter. None of those folks wanted anything to do with someone who could make their lives pretty scary should a hammer come sailing their way.
ON YOUR MARK Mark K. Campbell
I figured it was the same way people – like me – feel should they wander into a McDonald’s and find a bunch of guys with rifles slung over their shoulders dining on Big Macs. Unless this is Llano County in November during deer season, I ain’t eating there. I’m way too much of a smarty-pants to sit next to guys with guns. (I know I probably do all the time, but I can actually see the weapons on these “patriots.”) The people on the highway eyeing me suspiciously while I jogged along with a hammer likely thought the same thing. “Why would a guy jog along the road with a hammer? Couldn’t he just put it on his tool belt?” They avoided me. I suppose it’s my constitutional right
to carry a hammer anywhere I want. Hammers don’t kill people, people kill people. But that’s not exactly what the UPS guy thought or the old couple in the Cadillac. They gave me a wide berth. I own a gun. I have never toted it into a Wendy’s even though George Washington and Benjamin Franklin clearly thought I should be able to when they penned the Constitution. I also have not had a hammer in hand when ordering a Frosty. Or at Schlotzsky’s. However, if some crazy guy rushes into a Chipotle with a handful of nails, rest assured I’m your man. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor and who knows what will happen if he finds a chain saw on the roadside?

. E. B. Baylor, 1793– 1873, was a lawyer, college founder, and Baptist leader. He was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, on May 10, 1793, the son of Walker and Jane (Bledsoe) Baylor. His father had been a captain in the Continental Army as a member of the 3rd Light Dragoons during the American Revolution and served as an orderly on General George Washington’s staff. Walker’s son, Robert received his formal education at a country school and at academies around Paris, Kentucky. But he postponed his legal career to serve as a member of the Kentucky Militia in the War of 1812. After service in the War, he studied law in the office of his uncle, Judge Jesse Bledsoe, was admitted to the bar in 1812, and became well-known throughout the area. In 1819, he was elected to the Kentucky State Legislature. Around 1820 he moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he practiced law, and his reputation continued to grow. In 1824–25 he served in the Alabama State Legislature. He was elected a representative from Alabama to the Twenty-first

Republic of Texas President Anson Jones signed the Act of Congress on February 1, 1845, officially chartering it as Baylor University. Baylor may have donated the first $1,000 to the university, served as a member of the board of trustees and taught law intermittently, without pay. Although Baylor was instrumental in founding Baylor University, named for him, he was never a president of the school. While traveling through his judicial districts on horseback to enforce the law, he held court by day and preached in the evenings. He presided at the first district court held in Waco and perhaps delivered the first sermon ever preached in that city, at the hotel owned by Shapley P. Ross. Baylor became a Mason in 1825; he served as chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Texas Masons in 1843,

1845, and 1847. In 1853 he assisted in the organization of a lodge at Gay Hill in Washington County, his home until his death. Although Baylor was never married nor had children, he was quite close to his nephew John Baylor, as John lived with him for a time and wrote to him often when he left Robert Baylor’s house. John Baylor led an adventurous life of his own as a noted Indian fighter, commander of the first Confederate invasion of New Mexico in the American Civil War, Confederate congressman, and gunfighter. After a life of faith in God and public service to three states, Robert Baylor died on December 30, 1873, and was buried, as he had requested at Baylor University’s original campus in Independence, Texas, but his remains were transferred to the University of MaryHardin Baylor in 1917. You might have guessed by his name that R. E. B. Baylor is a descendant of Col. Anthony Bledsoe. Laurie Moseley is an author, archeologist and historian who lives in Springtown. He is the director of Springtown’s Legends Museum.

David Dewhurst and House Speaker Joe Straus on June 18 jointly directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to begin law enforcement surge operations on the Texas-Mexico border. “To combat the flood of illegal immigration into the state in the absence of adequate federal resources to secure the border” was the reason given by Perry, Dewhurst and Straus. They authorized the DPS to fund the surge at approximately $1.3 million per week and instructed DPS Director Steve McCraw to have

Distracted driving discussed Small business owners, corporate executives and state officials joined the Texas Department of Transportation at Circuit of The Americas raceway in Austin on June 17 to consider solutions for reducing driver distractions that caused more than 95,000 traffic crashes last year in Texas. Doing any of the following while driving is considered distracted driving: texting, checking e-mail, eating and drinking, grooming, reading, programming a navigation system, adjusting a radio, CD player or other audio device. “With distracted driving responsible for one in every five crashes in Texas, we want to help business leaders understand what they can do to protect their employees, themselves and other motorists on the road,” John Barton, TxDOT deputy executive director said in an agency statement. Veteran state reporter and legislative analyst Ed Sterling is member services director for the Texas Press Association, whose 518 member newspapers have combined circulation of 3.7 million.

Some coaching positions filled, others on the horizon BY MARK K. CAMPBELL It’s tough enough for an athletic director to fill coaching positions every year, matching sports with specific teaching openings. When you’re the new guy and several current coaches have already signed contracts – yet still might move on – it becomes tougher. Springtown ISD AD Brian Hulett is in that position. Right now, four new coaches have officially been hired. And more will be. Getting to know them Hulett said he only knew one coach when he came to Springtown – Hannah Adams who had had a tour through Eastland where Hulett was previously. “I didn’t know them,” he noted of everyone else in the SISD. “Our coaches had already been rehired when I got here, so there was not a lot of flexibility. “I wanted to assess them and know who they are, strengths and weaknesses. Remaining hires There are five coaching positions that are not officially resigned yet, so more hirings are on the near horizon. Part of that situation – including more hirings – will be cleared up upon official school board approval, Hulett said. The coach will also fill the head trainer position held for years by Brent Haugen who is now an assistant principal at the high school, taking the position of Bo Maines who is now coaching in Azle. When the dust finally settles, the AD is confident he will have assembled the best available workmates possible. “We are fixing to put a good staff together,” Hulett said.

This plot is nothing new – which is no big deal – but there is also nothing unique to juice the story line. The end of the alpha dragon seems pretty easy considering he’s portrayed as practically invincible during all of his other screen time. There are long stretches of boring exposition that will bore small kids a lot. Also: There’s no stinger – bummer – so don’t wait around through the incredibly long end credits. The rating (spoiler) When the dragons are mean, they will scare little kids – and that’s especially true when the alpha roars. With that and the death of a major character, the PG is correct. Summing up The Movie Man was a bit disappointed in How to Train Your Dragon 2. While it looks as groovy as the first one, it lacks something to raise it to the original’s level.
surprised this year, the one for the next Transformers movie – Age of Extinction – surprised the most. The Movie Man picked this fourth edition of the series to be the biggest moneymaker of the summer. The Movie Man is feeling pretty good about that prediction. So far, only one summer movie has passed $200 million, X-Men: Days of Future Past at $206.3 million. Age of Extinction should race past that by July Fourth and head to $400 million country – and first place.

Follow The Flag! Christian, patriotic event expected to draw thousands founder of Son Shine Ministries just outside the Azle city limits, began to ponder a way for families in the area to commemorate America’s Independence Day. Shaffer envisioned a Fourth of July gathering where patriotism and Christian faith could be celebrated hand in hand. With the help of hundreds of volunteers from area churches, Follow The Flag was born of that vision, and for 14 years, The fireworks display at Follow the Flag is one of the largest and most professional Photos by Carla Noah Stutsman the event grew until Son Shine in the area. Ministries’ campus could no longer accommodate it. In 2006 the AMA was entrusted with Follow The Flag. Attendance had reached 3,500 at the event in 2005, and at Forte Junior High in 2006, that number more than doubled. Torrential rains put a damper on the event in 2007, but it came back strong again in 2008. Follow The Flag, which began as one man’s dream, has grown to become a cornerstone event in Azle – one that will surely be recorded when future books are written about the history of Azle. Since the opening of Azle’s Central Park at 263 W. Main Street, Follow The Flag has been held there, and the city of Azle has graciously waived permit fees and provided both police and fire protection for the event. festival-goers with a variety of musical offerings celebrating faith and our nation. Among them is Rose Drew, a local Gospel vocalist who regularly performs at the Azle Opry and other venues. A small ensemble led by Daniel and Laura Montgomery will also perform. Daniel is an experienced worship leader with a master’s degree in vocal performance who excels in both contemporary and classical genres. For the younger folks in the crowd, Richard Ray, Jr. will share an original performance poem and Dan Crowe – former Indiana on-air radio personality – will share patriotic readings between songs. Several additional “acts” from The Abbey Church are in the works, too, but not yet confirmed. Pastor Tom Kolb of West Parkway Baptist Church, who is a Nashville recording artist in the Contemporary Christian Country Genre, will also perform and give away copies of his CD. Kolb says he’s happy to give away free CDs because of a core belief that for whatever is done in Jesus’ name, the price of admission was paid for on Calvary. That’s a belief that runs throughout the history of the event. Follow The Flag was born in 1992, when Lew Shaffer,

by carla noah stutsman When it comes to celebrating Independence Day, no one does it quite like Azle. Follow The Flag, now in its 22nd year (yes, we did the research to prove it), is a Christian, patriotic event that will take place July 4 from 7-10 p.m. in Azle’s Central Park. Live entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. The colors will be presented and the National Anthem will be sung around 9:15 p.m., just before the fireworks display begins at 9:45 p.m. Sponsored by the Azle Ministerial Alliance (AMA), the event is free – and that means free parking, free admission, free hot dogs. free sno-cones, free sweet tea and lemonade, and one of the largest and best professional fireworks shows around. It’s free, too. This year, the Star-Spangled Banner will be sung by Cat Schlueter and her daughter, Lindsay Schlueter. Lindsay was awarded the AMA’s Roland Earl Memorial Scholarship during the Azle High School Scholarship Assembly held May 22. The third recipient of the Lew Shaffer Award will be announced at the event, as well. Shaffer himself received the first award in 2012, followed by Glyn Murphy, who won it in 2013. The Abbey Church’s Worship Team will once again entertain
