Baja Mar meaning shallow sea is where the word bahamas comes from. The Bahamas is made up of about 700 individual islands and stretches over 258,998 square KM of ocean space. The original inhabitants of the Bahamas were the Lucayan indians betweeen the 900 and 1500 ad. The house of assembly of the Bahamas was first officially convened in 1729. The bahamas gained independence July 10, 1973. ON DECEMBER 7, 1971 THE BAHAMAS WERE GRANTED A NEW COAT OF ARMS. The bahamian culture is a culture that has evolved over generations. The bahamas have a colorful culture that cherishes traditional art, unique rhythmic music, and long held traditions told in popular folklore in oral tradition. Roots coming from African decent with the combination of British and American cultural influence. The official language of the islands is English. The people are described as easy-going, friendly, and hospitable people. The racial make up of the islands is 85% of African origin with the rest of the 15% being of European decent. The average life expectancy is 72 years old. The bahamian people are very well educated with a large educated workforce. The bahamas has a rapidly growing professional class. The bahamas is a highly religious country with the most churches per capita in the world. The church is one of the main influences of bahamian society, including government affairs. Regional caribbean music, including reggae, calypso, and merengue have long traditions and influences in bahamian culture. The official music of the Islands is “goombay�. The closest link to Bahamian ancestry is the Junkanoo dance and music form and it has been remarkably unchanged since. It originated from the bahamas during the days of slavery. Junkanoo is a celebration characterized by colorful costumes, goatskin drums. cowbells, horns, and a brass section. Junkoo can be compared to the american mardi-gras. If the date of the parade falls on a sunday it will be held back until monday affecting business affairs. The Junkanoo festival happens on BoXing day and on new years day. The vibrant colors and dramatic themes of the Junkanoo festival form the basis for the artistic expression along the islands. The bahamas takes up around 258,998 square km of ocean space with about 3,888 square km of land area. The bahamas are made up by 700 islands and 2,400 unihabited islets and cays, only 30 of the islands are inhabited. The most important island being New Providence which is where the capital, nassau is located. New providence is about 207 square km. The other islands are grand bahama, abaco, eleuthera, andros, cat island, and san salvador. The bahamas are home to five percent of the worlds coral reefs. Mount Alvernia on cat island is the hightest point in the bahamas, standing at 63 meters. There are 120 plant species that are unique only to the bahamas. There are no rivers that run through the country. With pollution very low, The bahamas are home to the clearest waters in the world, visibility reaching over 61 meters. It has been proven that alga is found deepest in bahamian water than anywhere else. The climate is subtropical -usually not experiencing snow, sleet, frost or extreme temperatures. Temperatures usually do not dip below 60 degrees in the winter and during the summer temperatures usually fall to 78 degrees at night and do not reach over 90 degrees through out the day. There are more than seven hours of light during the day on average. Rainy months are normally may-october; rain averages two inches a month from november to october. Wind speeds vary from the summer to winter months. During the summer winds can be 10 knots and below where as in the winter months winds can go up to about 25 knots.

The bahamas government is responsible for internal security and external affairs after the the british government gave over control and changing the constitution in 1969. Being a member of the commonwealth of nations the bahamas recognized her majestry queen elizabeth II as the head of state. The cabinet constitutes the executive branch and has general direction and control of the government of the bahamas. The cabinate is comprised of at least nine ministers inclusive of the prime minister and attorney general. Parliament consitiutes the legislative branch of the country; which consist of a senate and house of assembly. Paliament may make laws for peace and the over all good of the government. Judicial authority is vested in the judicature which coimprises the supreme court and the court of appeal with such jurisdiction, powers and authority as may be conferred on these courts respectively by the constitution or any other law.

Air routes radiate from nassau, making it necessary to change to a commuter plan in nassau when traveling between family islands.

The type of culture that is represented in the Bahamas is a very creative and historic. The diverse culture in the Bahamas has reminded visitors of the love for celebration and community. Bahamians are eager to show of their island and tell stories to point out hidden treasures of the island you may not know are there if you’re vacationing. Majority of the people who live in the Bahamas are West African descent, whose ancestors were captured and forced into slavery to work on cotton plantations in America. Others are of England Puritan descent that immigrated to Bermuda in search of religious freedom and settling on Eleuthera Island. This has created a melting pot of people on the island, and what has shaped The Bahamas into who they are today. According to the CIA World Factbook, 96% of Bahamians are Christians. Christianity is important to the Bahamian culture that the preamble of the country’s constitution declares an “abiding respect for Christian values and the Rule of Law.” The prevalence of Christianity can be seen in local schools, and in the country’s government. Most Bahamians celebrate all Christian holidays. A minority of the Bahamians follow Obeah, which is a belief system unique to the Bahamas and closely related to Voodoo. Obeah is illegal, but still practiced among the islands. Junkanoo is a national Bahamian festival with West African roots that is very important to Bahamian culture. It takes place once the day after Christmas, and once on New Years day. The festival involves elaborate costumes, parades with large floats, and traditional music, much like Mardi Gras. The Bahamian find this extremely important because it is regarded to as the soul of their culture, and the only aspect of their society that is truly unique to the Bahamas. The Bahamian culture also includes a strong Oral tradition that derives its myths and legends from a mix of African and European folklore. Other popular traditions say that the Fountain of Youth and the Lost City of Atlantis are located in the Bahamas.

Hugs, Kissing, and the informality of using first names is reserved for friends and family and should only happen if initiated by your Bahamian counterpart. Bahamians are very open and conversational people, always offering salutations and asking “How are you” to strangers and friends alike. Standing arms length from each other but touching between men and women, women to women, and man to women is ubiquitous and depends on how well they know each other and social setting. A common gesture among the Bahamians is to Suck Teeth (making a sucking noise with parted lips) to express contempt or disgust.
