RE:HOMELESS
HOMELESS TRANSIT CENTRE
Homelessness is a form of urban poverty and can be identified whenever people are forced to live in informal settlements under sub-par living conditions due to sudden changes in their living circumstances. A fact lesser known amongst locals is that 90% of the homeless community are Malaysian citizens– not foreigners. The top reasons for homelessness in Malaysia include unemployment, low income and domestic violence. In Sarawak, as in its aspiration to be a developed city, the welfare of the people, including the poor and handicapped, is an essential fabric of a developed nation. We should take prompt action, including a long-term solution to help these homeless obtain proper accommodations and professional help and eventually assimilate them into society. At the same time, it will also help maintain the good image of the capital city; Kuching. A total of RM5 million has been approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) to set up four temporary transit centres (TTG) for the homeless in Sarawak which is in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.
Kuching is home to most locals, but not everyone has a place to call home. On May 12th, 2022, the mayor of Kuching South, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, has suggested that a temporary shelter be created for the homeless to rest, clean up and sleep at night. Since homelessness is caused by unemployment, this homeless shelter aims to provide skills to the victims, in hopes of improving their self-esteem and confidence, other than providing basic necessities such as food, hygiene, and health care.
