SITE ANALYSIS LORONG 19, JALAN PADUNGAN Jalan Padungan is lined with Chinese shophouses, mostly built in the 1920’s and 30’s during the rubber boom. Some buildings are very elegantly decorated, and a walk around the back of them can reveal fascinating architectural details. The area has some excellent coffee shops, pubs and restaurants, more handicraft shops, and some unusual specialist retailers including an entire block of fruit and flower sellers.

A souvenir hunter and gastronome’s haven, Jalan Padungan is virtually an extension of the Main Bazaar due to its proximity. Look out for the traditional Chinese pastry shops and their traditional candies, and the variety of local fares such as Popiah, Sotong Kang Kung, Belacan Beehoon and many more. The Great Cat of Kuching, a monumental kitsch statue, is situated at the junction of Jalan Padungan and Jalan Central. After years of being the king of kitsch, the Great Cat now has a competitor – the Cat Statue opposite Hotel Grand Margherita.

PROJECT 2 : sada RHYTHM ARTISAN CENTRE SADA is a rhythm artisan centre located in the heart of Kuching, Sarawak. SADA serves as a musical centre and also a youth community centre. The main concept of SADA derives from the traditional Sarawakian music instrument, sape. According to legend, the sape came about through a dream of a Kenyah man, who went into the forests to look for medicinal herbs for his sick wife after several shamans failed to cure her. While taking a rest under a tree, he dozed off and, as the story goes, fell into a deep slumber and dreamt of his ancestors telling him his wife was in the spirit world and he needed to ferry her back to the real world. So he carved a wooden block into the shape of a boat – to symbolise the transportation needed to save his wife. After stringing the boat-shaped contraption with roots and leaves, he played a tune, complete with a chant, to pave the way for his wife’s return to the human world. The man later became a shaman. The form of the circulation a n d shaped heavy t h a t
