MULTIGENERATIONAL VERTICAL LIVING Kuching was declared as a city on 01 August 1988. Since then, many changes had taken place in housing, commercial, recreational areas, public facilities and other infrastructures and utilities. On 01 August 2020,Kuching celebrated its 32-nd year anniversary as a city, with an announcement of five year master plan by the Chief Minister of Sarawak to transform Kuching into a Smart City. The transformation will be implemented by both local authorities and the private sector. As Kuching continues to undergo a rapid development, the economic indicators has reflected that therewill be an increase demand for better facilities and amenities, efficient infrastructure and transportation system and higher standard of housing for better quality of life, well-being and health. Sarawak in general and Kuching in particular, is expected to experience a rise in life expectancy, population and elderly citizens. United Nations and Department of Statistics Malaysia, revealed that the percentage of elderly people above the ageof 60 years in Sarawak was estimated to be at 16 per cent, compared to an estimate of 15 per cent to be registered by the whole country by the year 2030. With the aim to address the above, this semester’s design project will consist of one project with a theme ‘MultiGeneration Vertical Living‘ - a multi-storey housing project that will focus on multi-generation home and living.
Desa @ Ridgeway is designed as a community focused, multigenerational vertical living located at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee. The main concept behind Desa @ Ridgeway is creating arts & crafts as main communal activities, thus providing ares for such activities. A way to promote social interaction among residents is to encourage the same practice of hobby: creating something! Be it painting, weaving, beadworking, clay making, sewing, knitting, the residents will always have something to look forward to as spaces for craft workshops will be provided. Completed artworks will also be displayed and sold to other residents that wish to display it in their homes or gift it to other people.
