AZUKA THEATRE captivating Stories. Powerful Voices. Unexpected Perspectives.
11TH SEASON 2010-2011
a killer season
Azuka Theatre gives voice to the people whose stories go untold. That’s our mission, and it can take us down some very interesting paths! This year will be no exception. In the past we’ve run the gamut from a Christmas show to a rock re-telling of the Oedipus myth; from the adaptation of a beloved novel to the darker side of life as a parking valet. All of our shows have allowed our audiences a quick look into lives they might not have noticed, stories they may never have heard. In order to tell those stories we’ve expanded our theatrical vocabulary to include site specific work, video, puppets anything we feel can enhance an audience’s experience. We’ve never been frightened of anything new; new work, new venues, new artists. It’s a funny thing about ‘newness’, as exciting as it is, it can often be a bit scary; something about venturing into the unknown. Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom, our first show of the year, is a perfect example. This exciting work explores the world of on-line gaming and its impact on those who play and those who live with the players. Part horror story, part meditation on the world of interpersonal communication in the 21st Century, this show will give you shivers up your spine as well as plenty to think about. We’ve become so invested in new work we’ve decided to start creating some of our own. Azuka Under Construction is our new work-in-development program. Every year we’ll gather a group of artists; actors, designers, dramaturges and begin creating a new work. Starting with a script or just a concept, we’ll spend two weeks building ideas into a play or performance piece. The final four days of the workshop will include you - our audience the final piece to any theatrical project. Your response will have a direct impact on the work we’re creating. In the spring we’ll produce the terrible girls: our ninth world premiere – our eighth by a Philadelphia playwright – both remarkable numbers for a company our age and size. We’re excited to bring you this creepy Southern Gothic tale of secrets kept and revealed and the dire consequences of those revelations. It’s going to be a Killer Season indeed! Thank you so much for your continued support of Azuka Theatre. As a special thank you, we’ve decided to begin selling subscriptions, so our loyal audiences can enjoy our work at even more affordable prices. Azuka has long fought to keep our ticket prices as low as possible in order to make the experience of live theater as accessible as possible. We hope you’ll take advantage of these discounted prices and thus join us for a full season of remarkable theater. See you soon!

The Spotlight Series is a presentation of scripts being considered for future development and production with Azuka. This season Azuka will explore three new scripts with Philadelphia roots. Floating | By Eric Lane | Directed by Kevin Glaccum | November 15, 2010
Floating focuses on 3 families at a pivotal moment - a young man searches for his long-lost father; a mother, father and son contending with the mother’s increasing dementia and a young married couple coping with almost unbearable loss. Lyrical and theatrical, heartbreaking and funny, the play is ultimately about discovering moments of joy as they float by us. Floating was a finalist at this year’s PlayPenn new play conference here in Philadelphia. Skin & Bone | By Jaqueline Goldfinger | Directed by Allison Heishman | April 18, 2011
Azuka first began working with Jacqueline Goldfinger developing her play the terrible girls, which will receive its World Premiere at Azuka Theatre this Spring! We’re excited to continue to work with her as she develops her new script Skin & Bone: A Cannibal Confection from the Deep South. This is the second play in a trilogy of Southern Gothic plays that began with the terrible girls, come hear more from this exciting Philadelphia playwright! By and By | By James Ijames | Directed by Kevin Glaccum | May 16, 2011
By and By tells the story of three generations of a family wrestling with the sudden and horrible loss of a child. Filled with equal parts sorrow and joy, this life affirming story is the latest work by the 2010 F.
