WELCOME TO AZUKA THEATRE’S

9

th

SEASON!

Azuka Theatre’s mission is to strengthen the connection and shared humanity among its diverse audiences by giving voice to the people whose stories go unheard. The stories we tell provide a window into lives you may not have encountered; actually not just a window but a mirror. Whether it is a young girls desire to create, a young philosopher’s journey of discovery or any of the other myriad tales we hope to tell, we believe that these stories are, in one small way or another, your story. We’re really excited by what we have planned for this year: a concert, two more shows, three more play readings and three more Azuka Lounge events. In fact there’s something Azuka to do every month of the year! If you’ve enjoyed our work over the years, thank you for your support. If you’ve only just discovered us, we hope you’ll join us this year as we continue to present some of the best Philadelphia theater has to offer.

AUGUST 27 SEPTEMBER 13

2008 By Jordan Harrison Directed by Kevin Glaccum

The Latvian Society 531 N. 7th Street (7th & Spring Garden Streets)

. .Kid-Simple is the work of a fertile, rambunctious imagination.. Harrison is an exhilarating wordsmith. - Seattle Times

Kid Simple tells the story of child prodigy Moll who invents a machine that can hear the unhearable, like grass growing and hearts breaking. Enter the evil Mercenary who seduces our heroine, then steals the machine. Moll embarks on a quest (accompanied by the last boy virgin in the 11th grade) to rescue her machine and save the sounds of the unive rse! A quirky tale of innocence and experience featuring an original live Foley sound design, a host of piquant pleasures, prodigious perils and randy woodland creatures! Featuring Philadelphia favorites Amanda Schoonover, Kathryn Petersen and Keith Conallen alongside newcomers Delanté G. Keys, Joe Mallon, Kevin Meehan and Zura Young.

APRIL 3 - 26

2009 By Bruce Walsh Directed by Kevin Glaccum The Latvian Society 531 N. 7th Street (7th & Spring Garden Streets)

The newest work by one of Philly’s hottest new playwrights

A young man who claims to be a ‘Professional Philosopher’ lands a highly sought-after position parking cars at a posh club. Armed with a fresh confidence — and clean-cut good looks —‘Handsome’ enters this world where brutality and service go hand in hand, posing a sympathetic ear to the private despair and longings of the violent young men around him. From the writer of The Guided Tour and Northern Liberty, Whisky Neat was originally produced as Dasein in the 2002 Philadelphia Fringe Festival.
