2015 - 2016 SEASON & SUBSCRIPTIONS

Telling the stories of outcasts and underdogs

WELCOME We are thrilled to be bringing these three great plays to you for our 16th Season (sweet!) If you’ve joined us in the past, you’ll feel right at home with the stories we’ve selected for this season; tales of the people we may normally pass by, not pay much attention to — but on closer inspection find they are kindred spirits, not all that different from you and me. If you’re joining us for the first time, welcome! You’ll find that these stories of the outcasts and underdogs all around us will have a surprising resonance. As many of you are aware we had to leave our home, The Off-Broad Street Theater but the timing couldn’t have been better because starting with Local Girls, we’ll be performing our shows at Philadelphia’s newest theater at The Drake! The two performing spaces in this landmark building at 15th & Spruce will be the home to FIVE theater companies starting in January 2016. It’s the start of another exciting chapter in Azuka Theatre’s history and we look forward to you being a part of that!

— Kevin Glaccum, Producing Artistic Director

— The Drake, 1512 Spruce Street —

Grace takes a chance on Large. Large takes a chance on Riece. Can these three broken but brave lovers hold a family together when all they can do is tear each other apart? Across race and cultural lines, the common language is love. Named Outstanding New Play for its workshop at the New York Fringe, Lights Rise on Grace strips bare the issues of incarceration, sexuality and family. “Chad Beckim is a master storyteller. His language has the grace of poetry without becoming poetic, and words which are almost music come out of his characters’ mouths with complete naturalness,” (DC Theatre Scene). Featuring Keith Conallen, Bi Jean Ngo, and Ashton Carter.

A World Premiere by a local playwright! High school chemistry genius Diskit needs some friends who aren’t her dad. High school burnout Riley needs a new screamer for her metal band. The Zombie Fuel Energy Drink Wreak Ruckus Battle of the Bands could transform them both from high school losers into rock gods. But will that be enough to get them out of Tucker, Georgia? Azuka’s 10th world premiere by a local playwright is Emma Goidel’s scream rock fantasia about searching for big-time glory in a small-time town. Anime-obsessed Sebastian and emo-Wiccan Claryssa have the kind of connection that can only be found on the bottom rung of the social ladder. One night, a terrible act of bullying leaves their friendship in ruins. As they separately struggle with the fallout, an ecstatic vision leads Sebastian on an apocalyptic mission accompanied by a mysterious moth in a jar he found next to his bed. An explosive exploration of friendship, betrayal, and loss, this darkly funny and moving Philadelphia premiere by Australian playwright Declan Greene is Azuka’s fifth New Professionals Production. This is your first chance to see Philadelphia’s most exciting young talent in action.

An Azuka Theatre New Professionals Production & Philadelphia Premiere!

Featuring Mary Tuomanen, Anna Szapiro, Sam Henderson, Tabitha Allen, and Brandon Pierce.

Honorary Producer
