A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Bunraku (文楽?), also known as Ningyō jōruri (人形浄瑠璃), is a form of traditional Japanese puppet theater, founded in Osaka in 1684 that utilizes live music, narration and multiple puppeteers operating each single puppet. The lead puppeteer is unmasked. The Long Christmas Ride Home employs a combination of two theatrical styles: one evocative of the work of Thornton Wilder, the other, the puppetry of Japan. The author writes: This play is a fusion of a one-act play and Bunraku puppet theatre techniques - or more importantly, one Westerner’s misunderstanding of Bunraku. This misunderstanding is key. Ms. Vogel’s interpretation of this style pays homage to her late brother Carl’s love of all things Japanese and offers in tribute a rich background of sounds and sights to tell this story. The Holidays. Family time. The wrapping of carefully selected presents and the wrapping of children in coats, scarves and hats – all packed into the backs of cars, bounding snowy roads to see cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. Nostalgia abounds in sounds and smells; Grandma’s honey ham, Uncle Bob’s laugh, songs on the radio, the ripping of colored paper and stuffing oneself with Christmas cookies. Pressures also mount in trying to recreate this perfect experience year after year; flaring tempers, rushing about the house to get ready, fighting with brother or sister in the back seat of the car, having a little too much to drink at the party, or saying something you regret. A moment we’d like to take back but cannot burns in our memory a little clearer because of the time of year it happened. The Long Christmas Ride Home is a bittersweet reminder of the complicated dynamics of love, pain and regret between parents and children, husbands and wives, and brothers and sisters during a long ago Christmas journey to Grandma’s house. The events that unfold for this fragile family twist and, turn and indelibly mark the lives of the three children in the back seat of that rusty Rambler.
A NOTE FROM DEAN ALLEN SABINSON Dear Audience, Welcome and thank you for coming. We’re very proud of Azuka Theatre’s production of The Long Christmas Ride Home you’ll see tonight. It was made possible by the Mandell Professionals in Residence Project, an initiative that brings theatre, music and dance professionals to the Drexel campus for performances, production and instruction. This is just one of the exciting performing opportunities offered by Drexel’s Westphal College: our four choral ensembles, jazz orchestra, jazztet, and six instrumental music ensembles will perform their fall concerts in December; our dance ensemble will perform in the winter and the spring; and the Theater season continues with Midsummer Night’s Dream in February and Reefer Madness in the spring. Each Thursday, join us in the Creese Student Center for Late Night Series-Philly, an open-mic night where self expression and fun are center stage. One of the very special things about the performing arts at Drexel is that our student performers come from all thirteen of Drexel schools and colleges. Everyone is welcome and I invite you to become a part of the Drexel Performing Arts experience. You can find out more by calling 215-895-2453 or by visiting our Web site: www.drexel.edu/westphal.
