FROM THE DIRECTOR I knew we were going to produce Lights Rise on Grace as soon as our dramaturg Sally Ollove finished describing it to me. The story and the characters were right in our sweet spot: three outsiders trying to find their way in the world. We love outcasts and underdogs here at Azuka, but I have come to realize while working on this play that what I really love about them is the journey they go through. Frequently in the stories we tell, the characters are trying so hard to fit in that it causes them a lot of pain and heartache; more often than not they discover that just being themselves and staying on the outside is the solution to finding some kind of happiness. I think one of the most challenging things we do as human beings is to just be ourselves—there is so much pressure to conform and fall in line that being true to yourself and your own path becomes a daily challenge. To those of you who also choose to take up this challenge, keep coming back to Azuka—we undersand you here. This is the first play we’ve produced as Associate Members of the National New Play Network. We joined this organization this past year to not only avail ourselves of the incredible work that’s being created around the country, but to also give a showcase to the Philadelphia writers we champion here. We’re looking forward to many years of fruitful collaboration with NNPN.

A ROLLING WORLD PREMIERE What the heck is a rolling world premiere and why is Azuka so excited about it? We love new plays at Azuka. So joining the National New Play Network--an organization that loves new plays and playwrights as much as we do--was a no-brainer. Founded in 1998, in their words, NNPN is the “country’s alliance of nonprofit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays.” One of the ways NNPN champions new plays and writers is through rolling world premieres. In a rolling world premiere, three or more theaters commit to producing a new play in a twelve month period. The playwright develops the world premiere through at least three different productions with three different creative teams and casts and in three different communities. Lights Rise on Grace is the first Azuka rolling world premiere, having started its journey at Woolly Mammoth in DC, continuing on to Stageworks in Florida, and now arriving in Philadelphia. Throughout the rolling world premiere process, the playwright is encouraged to take what they learn in one production and make changes for the next one. Lights Rise on Grace playwright Chad Beckim articulates what makes this process so beneficial to writers: “Usually you write a play, it’s produced, and then it’s locked and that’s it. The NNPN affords playwrights the unique and wonderful opportunity to take another chance and give us another stroke of the proverbial pen. There’s a beautiful give and take here, a symbiotic relationship between the writer and these vastly different organizations that affords fresh perspectives and different opinions, that allow for experimentation over a much longer time period than the traditional one and done ‘world premiere.’ “ Azuka is proud to be part of NNPN and able to bring exciting new voices like Chad’s to Philadelphia and share the amazing work of local playwrights, like Jacqueline Goldfinger (Skin & Bone and the terrible girls), Douglas Williams (Moon Cave), and Emma Goidel (Local Girls) with our NNPN colleagues.
