FROM THE DIRECTOR “The moth don’t care when he sees the flame He might get burned but he’s in the game And once he’s in he can’t go back He’ll beat his wings ‘til he burns them black No, the moth don’t care when he sees the flame No, the moth don’t care when he sees the flame” — Aimee Mann

DRAMATURG NOTES Like all high schoolers, our characters are buoyed and buffeted by their obsessions. Here’s a primer on a few of them.
Neon Genesis Evangelion Neon Genesis Evangelion began in 1995 as an anime television show and grew into a groundbreaking franchise including several films and a manga series. Created by Hideaka Anno, the story follows Shinji Ikari, one of a select group of teenagers chosen by a paramilitary organization to pilot giant humanoid mecha-suits called Evangelions against eighteen supernatural monsters called Angels attacking a postapocalyptic Tokyo. Noted for being an incredibly dark anime series, Anime News Network’s Mike Crandol describes Evangelion as “about being alone, about feeling alone and coming to terms with loneliness.” A Brief History of Saint Sebastian Saint Sebastian was an early Christian martyr and the patron saint of soldiers and athletes. He is believed to have been a Roman soldier who concealed his Christianity from the Roman emperor Diocletian. When the Romans discovered his faith they tied him to a stake and shot him “full of arrows as an urchin.” Believed dead, he was revived and nursed back to health by Saint Irene of Rome. After his recovery, he presented himself to the emperor who had him beaten with clubs until dead. His body was tossed into the sewers. Saint Sebastian has come to be known has one of the earliest gay icons, partially due to his depictions in Renaissance art and what Susan Sontag called his grace and beauty despite suffering. His name appears throughout the twentieth century gay canon from Oscar Wilde to Tennessee Williams and Frank O’Hara. Conceptions of Emo Culture Depending on when you went to high school, the term emo may call to mind people with dyed black hair, black clothes and black eyeliner. Emo meant people who were passionately devoted to emotional hardcore music, a genre that came out of punk and post-hardcore and included bands like Jimmy Eat World, Weezer, and Dashboard Confessional. It meant people who found their voices and communities on early social media sites like Xanga, LiveJournal and MySpace. It meant people who wrote poetry about their feelings and embraced the full range of their emotions in ways that were foreign to their peers. It meant people whose fashion choices and vulnerability often alienated them from the rest of their schools. None of those things is right. None of those things is wrong.
