This just in: XINGUANG named the destination of the year

Storytelling in Xinguang Buildings have been used as a canvas to tell the story of a place and its people since early man. From the ancient parietal wall paintings at Lascaux to the recent city-wide photography exhibitions of artist JR, people flock to visit and interpret a moment in time. The project imagines the abandoned buildings as space to capture the culture, traditions, livelihoods and dreams of Xinguang.

STORYTELLING IN XINGUANG 新光村的故事

The crumbling buildings would be retained, and allowed to return to nature. This ‘open-air museum’ could attract visitors from inner cities across the country and international tourists interested in learning more about rural China. It has the potential to be a stepping stone to develop Xinguang village as a sustainable tourist destination and retreat.

“This year it is the number one destination for visitors from all over the world. How did Xinguang manage to flourish anew? As traditional buildings were abandoned by euphoric construction of ‘new modernised homes’, young entrepreneurs took matters in their own hands drawing on local talent and resources and resulting in a rich cultural scene. Innovators, designers and students from all over the world found the opportunity to innovate and bring back life to these historic buildings. They were fully recovered and preserved as the patrimony they represent. Each of the buildings in disuse is now re-used as support infrastructure for tourism. Some have been transformed into hostels, restaurants with delicious traditional food, museums, galleries, residences for artists, information stands, workshops and other amazing places worth visiting! This has called the attention of many adventurous tourists who have fallen in love with the people of Xinguang, their culture, their landscape, their rural techniques, their history and their way of living.”
