Appetite Background information Appetite is a three year artistic programme with a 10 year vision that aims to get more people in Stoke-on-Trent to experience and be inspired by the arts. Appetite is part of the Creative People and Places programme and is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Creative People and Places aims to increase the number of people experiencing the arts in areas where arts engagement is significantly below the national average in the country. The programme aims to build an appetite for the arts in the city by putting on quality, family-friendly events in public spaces and placing people at the heart of what we do so they can take part and shape arts activity in Stoke-onTrent. Appetite will engage local residents so they can get involved and influence more art in more places across the city. Appetite’s focus is to better understand what the people of Stoke-on-Trent really want from the arts and how best to serve it to them. Appetite has several creative strands that will help develop skills and increase this hunger for the arts in the city. To find out more please visit www.appetitestoke.co.uk. An ambition of Appetite is to deliver some of the best quality and most exciting arts activities that the local, national and international arts industry can offer. Appetite is part of the Creative People and Places programme and is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Appetite is led by New Vic Theatre in partnership with B Arts, Brighter Futures, Partners in Creative Learning (PiCL) and Staffordshire University. Appetite is also supported by Stoke-on-Trent City Council. On behalf of Appetite, B Arts is managing the development of www.appetitestoke.co.uk. B Arts is a participatory arts organisation that has been based in North Staffordshire for thirty years. Its mission is to make art with people to improve lives and places (www.b-arts. org.uk) Appetite website development to date A developer was commissioned in April 2013 to build the initial iteration of www.appetitestoke.co.uk. The emphasis was on providing general information and communicating activity and events as part of the Appetite programme and this remains the core purpose of the site. In 2014 a social media integration programme was carried out to reflect social media content more dynamically within the site: www.appetitestoke.co.uk/social/feed We are now looking to commission a web developer to further expand the functionality and interactive elements of the Appetite website, as we move into the final year of our three-year programme. There are two distinct work programmes, but in order to manage the project effectively our preference is to work with a single developer on both projects.

PROJECT A: Profile Enhancement Project Aim: To increase the depth of individual engagement with their profile on the Appetite website and to store and generate more extensive data on users’ engagement with the Appetite programme. Appetite already collects basic data from ticketing information collected via Eventbrite and Brown Paper Tickets, e-newsletter sign ups and log-ins to the website. Project objectives:

To create an enhanced Appetite user profile that would draw together the information we have on an individual into a single platform and enable us to understand more about our users and track their engagement with the Appetite programme in more detail. To consolidate the data that Appetite has under different databases (for example ticket-buying information on Brown Paper Tickets and the Appetite mailing list) into a single entry per user. Develop a mechanism within the platform to encourage individuals to self-post attendance at unticketed events and to complete more details on their role within the event. For example, were they participants or audiences? Did they volunteer as stewards? Did they bring family and friends or attend by themselves?

Project B: Listings from other organisations Project Aim: To enable Appetite to present on its website and associated social media platforms information about arts activities from other arts organisations and producers in Stoke-on-Trent in a more consistent and semi-automated manner. Appetite already signposts information informally on other cultural events produced by consortium members and a wider group of artists and organisations within Stoke-on-Trent. They appear on their social media pages and on Appetite e-newsletters. Project objectives: • •

To undertake a review with B Arts on existing cultural organisations to identify where and how information about arts events in the city are currently presented online; Create an automated feed within the above online platforms that would pull and send information to and from other event listings such as Creative Stoke, BBC Radio Stoke, The Sentinel, What’s On in Staffordshire; Create a What’s On section on the main Appetite site that populates automatically;

Create a template that event organisers can use to create events that can be then reposted/listed by Appetite onto social media feeds, e-newsletters and the What’s On section of the website;

Ensure that the listings, feeds and templates are fully integrated with the Artsbank, which will be a cultural event development platform being built as part of the ongoing development of the Appetite programme. This will be hosted within appetitestoke.co.uk. The Artsbank will be an online platform accessed by the public through the Appetite website. The purpose of the Artsbank is to provide communities, organisations and individuals with a set of resources, tools and networks that will encourage more people to take action in managing their own cultural events.
