Gallagher Weigh Systems available at Agri-Best Feeds Gallagher North America, Inc. is thrilled to introduce the newest member of the Gallagher Family, Agri-Best Feeds of Billings, MT. The Largest Ag Trade Show in Region is in Billings Tickets are free and can be found at First Interstate February 15-17 Bank locations in Billings and Hardin. Tickets can Billings, MT--Agriculture is big business in the Billings region, drawing customers from a span of 500 miles away. The MATE show, February 15-17, highlights agriculture products and services for those customers just in time for the upcoming Spring season.

Since 1976 the MATE, short for Montana AgriTrade Exposition, invites agricultural businesses to MetraPark for a three-day trade show. Increased interest, and attendance grew the MATE to become the largest Ag trade show in the region. The businesses that set up booths capture their target audience and build relationships with customers.

Equipment dealers bring in the latest models of tractors. Seed specialist display new varieties. Livestock nutritionist answer questions and provide strategies.

Visitors come because they can test out products, investigate new technologies, and come up with ideas to take back to the farm or ranch to make operation better.

The spring-like February weather usually encourages cabin-fevered neighbors to come out and catch up.

MATE provides an atmosphere of swapping stories and one-upping who got more moisture.

Attend the MATE theater--classroom style presentations covering a wide range of topics. Learn about the latest in precision farming, discover the latest in crop varieties, find out proper fertilizer application, educate yourself on farm and ranch management and more. Saturday's classes include music, dancing, and painting--all new this year. The full schedule can be found on the website.

The MATE show focuses on agriculture, but it also features the Home & Health show. Businesses that offer products and services for the home set up in the Montana Pavilion. The home is a part of the farm or ranch after all. Clothing, food, nutrition, insurance, crafting supplies, and a menagerie of other things fill the Home & Health show.

Every year Grand Prizes are given away on the last day of the show. This year's grand prizes are a John Deere gator, a Sunshine Infared sauna, and one ton of SweetPro products. For a chance to win fill out the back of the MATE ticket and put it in the drawing drums. The winners will be announced Saturday, February 17 starting at 4:15 p.m.

By Alyssa Severeid Freedom and independence are not typically words associated with those confined to a wheelchair, but according to Jeff and Jana Swenson, perhaps they should be. The Swensons, who own Action Outside, Montana’s only Action Trackchair distributorship, are proving that confinement to a wheelchair does not equal confinement from Montana’s great outdoors.

Action Trackchair, based in Marshall, Minnesota is the only US-based mass-produced trackchair on the market today. Started by Jeff ’s dad, Tim Swenson, due to Jeff ’s own wheelchair usage, the company carries a complete line of trackchairs for children and adults. The Action Trackstander TR model even makes standing a reality.

“It’s been a game changer for my husband,” says Action Outside co-owner, Jana Swenson. “When we used to go camping and Jeff was in a standard wheelchair, he couldn’t do much but sit at the campfire because of the rough terrain. With the trackchair he can gather firewood and do other tasks around the camp that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.” In Montana, the trackchair is hugely popular among outdoor enthusiasts as it allows wheelchair users to get out and enjoy outdoor activities like hunting and fishing.

But the trackchair’s usefulness goes far beyond mountainous terrain. “We just got back from vacation in Hawaii and Jeff was able to enjoy the beach. That would have been impossible in a standard wheelchair,” said Jana. Action Trackchair has recently introduced a narrow version of the chair that has limited indoor use – perfect for enjoying the beach and the little shops that so often dot the shoreline.

Kramer Manufacturing 80 Years of Making Hay

By Alyssa Severeid With continuous advancements in technology, much of agriculture production barely resembles common practices of 100 years ago. But without the innovators of agriculture always looking at ways to improve processes, the evolution of the industry might look much different.

Fortunately for today’s hay producers, Leo Kramer started Kramer Manufacturing in 1937 in an effort to do hay production better.

The company started out building hay sweeps, underslungs, and winches for hay stackers. In 1970 the stack mover was added to the product lineup to make it easier for ranchers to move haystacks. Over time, Kramer Manufacturing has expanded to offer a full line of hay equipment including round bale processors, bale retrievers and movers.

A blacksmith and visionary, Leo Kramer set out to build a company on integrity, quality, loyalty and innovation dedicated to serving farmers and ranchers across North Central Nebraska. After four generations, his values continue to provide the cornerstone that the company is built upon.

“We’re still a family-owned company with three generations that come into work every day,” said Kramer’s great grandson, Brett Gokie.

Hobby Turned Business,

a look at Hobby Horse Creations Billings, MT—For Bonnie Grant it began as a hobby sewing outfits for her daughters, now Hobby Horse Creations is a successful stick horse business.

Bonnie worked in a coal mine for many years repairing equipment and describes herself as mechanically minded. It was natural for all of Bonnie’s creations to be her own design.

“Imagination is my guide and sometimes they can get a little wild.” The stick horses aren’t just natural colors, the combinations of colors for the head and manes range all over the rainbow.

Purples and pinks are the best sellers.

As her four daughters were growing up she would take them to horse shows on the weekends. Bonnie noticed that there wasn’t a lot of toy or gift options for kids interested in horses, so she made some up herself. She turned her needle and thread pastime into supplemental income and now owns and runs Hobby Horse Creations.

She has made hundreds and hundreds of stick horses, with what she considers the perfect pattern finalized about twenty years ago.

“The first ones were ugly, I kept working at it to get the right shape of a horse head,” Bonnie commented as she remembered when she first started.

She now has her stick horses copyrighted as well as Bucky Bull—a stick-horse like bull for the little boys and girls dreaming of becoming PBR stars.

Stick horses and bulls are her favorite but that’s not the only thing she crafts. She also makes wall hangings specifically with western designs. Her latest designs are silhouettes of all the different type of horse hobbies—cutting, roping, barrel racing,

saddle bronc riding, etc.

Bonnie’s no stranger to making things that last either. Her quality pot holders can withstand 400 degree temperatures.

“I was sick of wimpy pot holders falling apart, so I made my own,” commented Bonnie.

Bonnie first learned how to sew when she was around 10 years old in 4-H when she lived in Pennsylvania. She lived in New Mexico for 18 years and now calls Dayton, Wyoming home.

Bonnie travels to several trade shows setting up her booth and selling her western-themed wares.

2018 is the first year Bonnie brings her Hobby Horse Creations to the MATE. She’s previously been at the NILE trade show. Find her at booth 654 in the Montana Pavilion at the MATE show February 15-17, 2018.

1-2 p.m. Tank Mixing Herbicides and insecticides; pitfalls and problems Presented by Cecil Tharp

Tank mixing herbicides can be both convenient and effective when spraying weeds. When it comes to tank mixing Herbicides and Insecticides for convenience, it can be a little more difficult and there are considerations to make when trying to mix specific chemistry. Dr. Tharp with give an overview of how to mix certain herbicides and insecticides when spraying crops such as alfalfa, sugar beets, wheat and corn.

2-3 p.m. Safe Pest Control in Your Garden Presented by Nikki Bailey

Gardening in large or small plots you can experience pest problems with weeds, insects and disease. Nikki will give an overview on how you can use products safely for yourself and your vegetables if these problems arise.

3-4 p.m. Effective Weed Control in Conventional or Glyphosate Ready Alfalfa Hay Presented by Mat Walter

We all know there are no silver bullets in alfalfa hay, and often you can go a full rotation without a single weed. But what happens when you end up with an infested field in your second or third year? Mat will give examples and recommendations on when to spray to best combat your alfalfa weed problems.

The internet has all sorts of suggestions for managing prairie rodents such as prairie dogs, ground squirrels and pocket gophers.

Molly will bust many of those myths and also present on the most effective methods for trapping and baiting the pesky critters.

MSU presenter bios • Dr. Cecil Tharp has been the Montana State University Pesticide Education Director for 13 years. Dr. Tharp is a graduate in the fields of wildlife biology, entomology and parks and recreation. His duties include coordinating the MSU Extension PEP while working with 56 county and tribal MSU Extension county agents. Dr. Tharp is dedicated to the certification and training of private applicators while assisting general and commercial pesticide applicators.

• Dr. Jane Mangold is the MSU Extension Invasive Plant Specialist and a MSU associate professor with the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences. Dr. Mangold has studied Cheat Grass, Spotted Knapweed and the newest invader to our state Medusahead.

The practical application, risk and reward of cover crops in Montana. What are the options? Mr. Dallefeld will share insights on how to establish a good cover, speaking on various species and how they function. He'll help you plan for success.

• Mat Walter is the MSU Extension Agent in Musselshell and Golden Valley Counties. He has served Montana State University for the last 13 years as a crop researcher and Extension agent and has extensive knowledge in weed control in both range and cropland.

• Nikki Bailey is the MSU Extension Agent in Carbon County. Nikki has been providing Master Gardener programs and range management strategies in Carbon County since she took the position.

1-2 p.m. Alfalfa Weevil Management Presented by Emily Glunk

Dr. Glunk will give an overview of managing weevil populations and explain the importance of economic threshold and application timing to best be effective in your weevil control.

2-3 p.m. Drought Stress on Effective Weed Control Presented by Jane Mangold

During drought we can get an inordinate amount of invasive plants show up in pastures and fields that can make spraying a difficult task. Dr. Mangold with talk about how weed control during drought can be difficult on the weeds and our beneficial plants. Dr. Mangold will also briefly cover cheatgrass biocontrol.

• Dr. Emily Glunk is the Extension Forage Specialist and Assistant Professor in the Animal and Range Sciences Department at MSU. Her focus is on evaluating best forage management practices, as well as evaluating the plant/ soil/ animal interaction, and how to improve animal productivity through improved forage performance.

• Molly Hammond is the MSU Big Horn County Extension Agent. She has served in this position for over three years, helping the people of her community, which includes providing information on rodent control.
