ABOUT ME

“MY NAME IS BRADLEY MCARDLE AND I LIVE IN WALSDEN, WEST YORKSHIRE. I STUDIED ARCHITECTURE AT LEEDS METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY IN WHICH I ATTAINED A DEGREE AT A 2:2 LEVEL. I AM A HARD WORKING INDIVIDUAL WHO CAN WORK EQUALLY AS WELL ON MY OWN AS I CAN IN A TEAM. I HAVE GOOD ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS AND CAN WORK TO TIGHT DEADLINES. I HAVE A PASSION FOR ALL THINGS DESIGN, IN PARTICULAR, ARCHITECTURE. THIS PASSION COMES FROM STUDYING PRODUCT DESIGN AT 6TH FORM WHERE I FOUND MY TEACHER VERY ENGAGING AND i FELT THAT ARCHITECTURE WAS THE RIGHT STEP FORWARD IN CONTINUING MY CREATIVE THINKING AND DESIGN. DURING MY TIME AT LEEDS METROPOLITAN I DEVELOPED GOOD RELATIONSHIPS WITH FELLOW STUDENTS AND TUTORS ALIKE. I FEEL THIS CONTRIBUTED TO MY ENGAGEMENT AND PASSION FOR THE COURSE AS I FELT I WAS SURROUNDED BY LIKE MINDED INDIVIDUALS WHO ALL HAD THE SAME PASSION AS ME. SINCE LEAVING UNIVERSITY I HAVE TRIED TO SEEK OUT ARCHITECURAL/DESIGN WORK WHEREVER POSSIBLE TO HELP FURTHER MY STUDIES AND CAREER. THE BODY OF WORK INCLUDED IN THIS PORTFOLIO I FEEL IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF MY PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT THROUGH THE COURSE, AND THE CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OUTSIDE OF UNIVERSITY. THE PORTFOLIO ENCOMPASSES VARIOUS PROJECTS FROM ACADEMIC THROUGH TO EMPLOYMENT, SHOWCASING THE VARIOUS SKILLS I HAVE ACQUIRED AND DEVELOPED OVER THE LAST 4 YEARS. I HOPE TO RETURN TO UNIVERSITY TO STUDY AT A POST GRADUATE LEVEL SO I CAN TAKE ANOTHER STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING A FULLY QUALIFIED ARCHITECT” - BRADLEY MCARDLE

ARMLEY MILL, ONCE A POWERHOUSE OF INDUSTRY,EXPORTING GOODS ALL OVER THE GLOBE DURING THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, IS NOW NOTHING MORE THAN A MUSEUM WHICH EDUCATES GUESTS ON THE HISTORY OF THE SITE ITSELF. DUE TO THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS SUCH AS THE ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX ACROSS THE RIVER TO THE SOUTH OF THE SITE IN RECENT YEARS, THERE HAS SEEN A DECLINE IN CUSTOM LEADING TO THE MILL BEING LEFT IN A STATE OF DISREPAIR. THIS CREATES A CLEAR SENSE OF SEPERATION AND DIVIDE BETWEEN OLD AND NEW. RESEARCH INTO THE SITE AND MUSEUM HISTORY HAS SHOWN THE MILL WAS ONCE HOME TO THE SMALLEST CINEMA IN THE WORLD ONCE IT HAD BEEN CONVERTED INTO A MUSEUM AND WAS A SOURCE OF INTEREST FOR VISITORS AND SOURCE OF INCOME. BEING IN URGENT NEED OF REGEN REGENERATION, THE PROJECT AIMS TO RESURRECT THE SITE BY BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN THE OLD AND THE NEW BY EMPLOYING A NEW CINEMA COMPLEX THAT OFFERS A UNIQUE VIEWING EXPERIENCE, AVAILABLE ONLY AT ARMLEY MILL. THE BUILDING IS BASED ON A STEEL GRID STRUCTURE THAT IS EXTRUDED AT VARIOUS LEVELS TO CREATE THE INTERNAL SPACES AND EXTERIOR VIEWING COURTYARD. THE COURTYARD ITSLEF HAS A SERIES ON RAIL SYSTEMS THAT ALLOW CHAIRS TO BE REMOVED FROM THE STORAGE AND SLID INTO POSITION, CREATING A CINEMA THAT CAN INCREASE ITS SEATING CAPACITY THAT DEPENDNG ON THE POPULARITY OF THE FILM BEING SHOWN. THE SCREENS THEMSELVES ARE PRODUCED FROM OLED SCREENS, ALLOWING THE PICTURE TO BE VIEWED WITHOUT THE NEED OF PROJECTORS AS THEY ACT AS A LARGE COMPUTERISED SCREEN,OFFERING SUPERIOR VIEWING QUALITY. THE IMAGE ON THE SCREENS CAN BE REVERSED SO THE FILM CAN BE VIEWED FROM THE INTERIOR CINEMA SEATING, ALLOWING SMALL AUDIENCES, THE THE OUTSIDE SEATING AREA, WHICH

HOME REMODEL

A FAMILY FRIEND HAS BEEN SEEKING TO REMODEL THEIR LIVING ROOM FOR SOME TIME AND BEING A STUDENT OF ARCHITECTURE I OFFERED MY SKILLS TO AID THEM. ALTHOUGH THE WORK WOULD NOT BE EXTENSIVE OR REQUIRE LARGE AMOUNTS OF PLANNING, IT ALLOWED ME TO DEVELOP MY INTERIOR PLANNING SKILLS BY TURNING A CURRENTLY OPEN PLAN SPACE INTO A FUNCTIONAL SPACE IN THE HOUSE. THE BRIEF THEY SET ME WAS TO CREATE MORE SEATING AND STORAGE FACILITIES AS THE CURRENT SPACE OFFERS VERY LITLE IN THE TERMS OF STORAGE FOR BOOKS, VIDEOS, DVD’S ETC. BY CREATING STORAGE SPACE THAT EXTENDS OUT FROM THE WALLS, IT ALLOWED ME TO TURN THEM INTO ALMOST A FEATURE OF THE ROOM. AS THE FIRE PLACE IS OUT OF COMMISSION, IT ALLOWED THE SHELVING TO BECOME A A SINGLE FLOWING PEICE OF FURNITURE THAT WASNT DIVIDED BY THE NED FOR A USEABLE FIRE PLACE, ALLOWING ME TO MAXIMISE THE AMOUNT OF STORAGE SPACE AVAILABLE. I UTILISED MY SKILLS OF SKETCHUP AND AUTOCAD TO CREATE SIMPLE PLANS AND MODELS THAT FULFILLED THEIR DESIRES FOR THE NEW SPACE.

THE EXISTING PLAN IS VERY OPEN PLAN AND DEVOID OF ANY SEATING OR STORAGE FACILITIES. THE PLAN I PROPOSED WAS TO TURN THE BAY WINDOW AREA INTO A SEATING SPACE WITH A COFFEE TABLE FOR STORAGE OF BOOKS OR MAGAZINES, ALLOWING THE OCCUPANT TO LOOK OUT OVER THEIR GARDEN WHILST READING THE MORNING PAPER OR JUST TO SIT AND ADMIRE THE VIEW. THE STORAGE UNITS ADJACENT TO THE COUCH AND ARMCHAIR HOUSE A FLAT SCREEN TV WHICH THE FAMILY CAN GATHER ROUND TO WATCH THEIR FAVOURITE FILMS OR SHOWS WITHOUT ANY OF THEM HAVING AN OBSCURED VIEW OF WHAT IS HAPPENING. THE STORAGE UNITS ALSO HAVE VAST AMOUNTS OF SPACE FOR BOOKS, VIDEOS, VIDEO GAMES, DVD’S ETC. THE ADDITION OF THE GLASS PARTITION WAS AN AESTHETIC CHOICE OF THE CLIENT, ALLOWING THEM TO LOOK THROUGH TO THE CONSERVATORY AND OUT ACROSS THEIR BACK GARDEN. I FEEL IT ALSO ADDS AN INTERESTING PEICE OF DESIGN TO A RATHER STANDARD SEMI-DETACHED HOUSE AND ADDS A PERSONAL TOUCH OF THE CLIENT INTO THE BUILDING. ALTHOUGH THE PLANS DID NOT REQUIRE VAST AMOUNTS OF WORK, I ENJOYED DOING THEM AS THE TIGHT CONFINES OF THE SPACE MEANT I HAD TO TRY OUT NUMEROUS VARIATIONS OF POSITIONING OF STORAGE AND SEATING AREAS TO FIND THE PLAN THAT MAXIMISED THE AVAILABLE SPACE AND CREATED A FUNCTIONABLE AND USEABLE AREA.

MY SKETCHES

AS PART OF MY STUDIES AT LEEDS SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, I HAVE USED SKETCHING IN MY WORK TO EXPLORE ARCHITECTURAL IDEAS, BE IT FROM THE CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF A PROJECT, OR TO EXPLORE EXISTING BUILDINGS. SKETCHING IS A VITAL TOOL AS IT ALLOWS US AS ARCHITECTS TO QUICKLY WORK THROUGH IDEAS AND HELPS US DEVELOP OUR DESIGNS FURTHER ONCE AN INITIAL IDEA HAS BEEN SOLIDIFIED. SKETCHING HAS BEEN A FUNDAMENTAL PERT OF MY STUDIES AT UNIVERSITY AND CONTINUES TO BE A PART OF MY INIDIVIDUAL STUDY. THE SKETCHES BELOW ARE A FEW EXAMPLES OF WORK I HAVE DONE, MANY OF WHICH I HAVE USED IN MY UNIVERSITY WORK TO EXPLORE ARCHITECTURAL IDEAS OF BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES. ALTHOUGH PHOTOGRAPHING BUILDINGS SURELY HAS ITS PLACE IN THE ARCHITECTURAL FEILD, I BELIEVE SKETCHING ALLOWS YOU TO ENGAGE WITH THE BUILDING ON A DEEPER LEVEL AS IT IS YOUR PERCEPTION AND VIEW WHICH MAKES THE SKETCH COME TO LIFE, AND ALSO IT IS ENTIRELY DOWN TO THE INDIVIDUAL ON HOW THEY CHOOSE TO PERCIEVE THE PEICE THEY ARE DRAWING.

AS PART OF MY STUDIES AT LEEDS SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, I HAVE TAKEN PART IN A NUMBER OF TRIPS WHICH HAVE AIMED AT BROADENING MY ARCHITECTURAL HORIZONS. I HAVE VISITED A NUMBER OF BUILDINGS WHICH RANGE FROM MUSEUMS TO EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES, ALL WITH DISTINCT ARCHITECTURAL STYLES THAT CONVEY BOTH DESIGN INTENTIONS AND CLEAR CONCPETUAL IDEAS THAT TIE INTO THE BUILDINGS FORM AND FUNCTION. THE VISITING OF THESE BUILDINGS THEN FED INTO MY OWN DESIGN WORK, WHICH PROVED AN INVALUABLE ASSET AS MY FIST HAND EXPERIENCE OF THE BUILDINGS ALLOWED ME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THEIR ARCHITECTURAL VALUE AND MEANING. THE FOLLOWING PHOTOGRAPHS ARE A SELECTION WHICH I FEEL BEST CONVEY THE BEST DESIGN ASPECTS AND INDIVIDUAL SPACES OF THE BUILDINGS. I HAVE ALSO TAKEN A NUMBER OF TRIPS WITH FRIENDS INSIDE THE UK TO VARIOUS CITIES TO EXPLORE BUILDINGS OF ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE AND AGAIN FURTHER MY STUDIES OF ARCHITECTURE.

MY TRAVELS

CONSTRUCTION WORK AS PART OF MY YEAR OUT I HAVE SOUGHT WORK IN ALL ASPECTS OF BUILDING, INCLUDING THE CONSTRCUTION. MY FATHER IS A SELF EMPLOYED BUILDER AND HAS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS INVITED ME TO JOIN HIM OF SITE, TO NOT ONLY LABOUR ON FOR HIM, BUT ALSO TO EXPAND MY KNOIWLEDGE OF MATERIALS, CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCES AND HOW BUILDINGS ARE CARRIED THROUGH FROM WORKING DRAWINGS TO THE PHYSICAL WORLD. THE MAJORITY OF THE PROJECTS ARE LOCAL TO THE AREA I LIVE INCLUDING HALIFAX, BRADFORD AND LEEDS BUT I HAVE ALSO TRAVELLED AS FAR A FEILD AS MORLEY AND THIRSK. ALTHOUGH I DO PREFER THE DESIGN ASPECT OF BUILDING, THE EXPERIENCE HAS PROVED INVALUABLE IN EXPANDING MY KNOWLEDGE OF THE INDUSTRY AS WHOLE, NOT JUST IN THE SPECIFIC FEILD OF ARCHITECTURE. THE FOLLOWING PHOTOGRAPHS ARE A SELECTION OF BUILDINGS I HAVE AIDED MY FATHER IN CONSTRUCTING, ALTHOUGH I WASN’T THERE FOR THE ENTIRE PROCESS, THE TIME I WAS THERE PROVED AN EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE AND VALUABLE LEARNING CURVE.
