I N T RO We love to see art. In its beautiful, myriad forms. 2D, 3D, vector, sculpture, paper craft, pop-ups, papier mâché, finger painting, toe painting… a combination of the aforementioned techniques. But we always wonder how it was created. What goes on behind the scenes and what inspires each individual? 2

What’s their preferred medium, their last Google search online, their wish list for their studio, their mantra, and who are their heroes? This year we went one step further with our “Creative Minds Survey”, aggregating key information. Of note: thirty seven percent of our artists are most creative in the morning, five percent drink more than seven cups of coffee a day, and twenty percent never leave home without a “murse”. That’s “man purse” to the uneducated. One thing is clear, each approach is different, unique, oblique, and we hope you enjoy peering through the window into their wonderful worlds.

Craig Ward is a lot of things to a lot of people. Occasional artist; sometime author; public speaker; soon to be father... Like I said, lots of things. But for the purposes of this book, he’s a designer and typographer. There. I said it. Typographer. It’s a big word. I’ll let it hang there a moment while you absorb its gravitas. It’s something I’ve fought against calling myself for a long time - mainly because people don’t really like hanging out with typographers. They’re a cold bunch, you see. Clinical. Exact. Fastidious. They live and breathe grids, columns, hierarchy and order. They wear their hair in a side parting so straight that you could use it as a ruler. They nurse undiagnosed OCD, wear three piece suits to work, peer at you through round little glasses and keep exquisitely tidy offices. But I’m not that kind of typographer. I’m the kind of typographer that makes words out of fire in mid

84

air - fire! I grow letters in laboratories, photocopy my arms, laser cut sheets of metal and fashion custom characters from falling silk, chalk dust and Chinese hamster ovary cells. Yes really. I direct music videos, burn pagan phrases into slabs of wood, tear typefaces apart, destroy sheets of glass and distort the very fabric of what typography is meant to be, constantly exploring the notion of word as image. And my studio... Ok, my studio is actually quite tidy. Sometimes. And I do all of this because I love words. I love the sound, the meaning, the rhythm... I love that they can make you laugh or cry or even both. They can offend you, inspire you, provoke you or arouse you and I believe that words deserve better. They deserve better than to be set in 12pt type at the bottom of an ad in some shitty system font that came with your computer. This is 6000 years of human history we’re talking about. The most powerful and precise tool for communication that we have as a species. Words deserve to be read. Celebrated. More than that, they deserve to grab your attention, shake you by the shoulders and slap you in the face until you can’t ignore them a second longer. They say a picture paints a thousand words but converesly, with a thousand words, who needs pictures? wordsarepictures.com
