OF FIC E R
The purpose of the Advancement Office of Crescent School is to make friends and raise funds, always in that order. Through numerous alumni programmes and fundraising initiatives for all Crescent family members, we work to ensure that the mission of Crescent School – Men of Character from Boys of Promise – is supported in a variety of ways. In this annual report to donors, we give thanks for the generosity of the Crescent School community from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. Highlights of the 2011/2012 fiscal year include: • $4.332 million pledged in new commitments to the School • A new $600,000 pledge received from the Crescent Parent Association in support of the Library and Commons project. This new pledge brings the CPA commitment to the Great Boys campaign to $1.3M, as they had previously pledged $700,000 in support of the CPA Centennial Scholarship which was offered for the first time this year • More than $1.2M pledged in support of the Parent Annual Giving Programme, including many double up and triple up commitments • More than 50 Crescent families have pledged commitments ranging from $100,000 to $5 million in support of the Great Boys campaign • $5M has been pledged toward the $13M Library and Commons project – the final capital initiative of the Great Boys campaign, with construction anticipated to begin in June 2013 conditional upon sufficient new pledge commitments from Crescent community members. With more than $21.3 million pledged toward the Great Boys campaign goal of $30 million, we are moving into the upcoming 2012/2013 year with much optimism. We are confident that our generous community members will continue to partner with us to ensure we can provide the facilities and programmes to further enhance the educational experience for current and future generations of Crescent boys. We are so grateful for the time, support and advice that is so generously provided by our Great Boys Campaign Co-Chairs, Barb Black P’08,’10,’14 and Paul Tompkins P’10,’12,’13, and our Development Committee members. Thank you for your investment in our boys! Sincerely, John Lynch P’16,’18 Chief Advancement Officer

FROM R OB WAT T CHAIR, FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE ALUMNI EXECUTIVE COMMITEE This is a significant year for Crescent School. For 100 years, Crescent has consistently strived to be the best School that it can be for the boys it educates. The current transformation of the School, in bricks and mortar and in educational offerings, is due in large part to the generosity of our donors. Over the past year, the alumni have taken great strides towards increasing their fundraising footprint at Crescent. Last year, the Alumni Executive introduced the first Fundraising Committee. The goal for this Committee is to see the alumni participation rate in giving to Crescent increase to 12 per cent. With the main goal centered on participation rather than dollar amount, I am optimistic that we will be able to reach this.
The philanthropic support from our alumni has increased by way of class giving, with particular mention of the Class of ’87 for their outstanding fundraising efforts. At the 2012 Homecoming weekend, the Class of ’87 celebrated its 25th reunion. In honour of this milestone, they committed to raise funds for The Pat Mills Family Bursary Fund. On September 29, the class of ’87 proudly presented a cheque to the School in the amount of $463,277 – the largest amount ever raised by a class in the history of the School. This magnificent gift will ensure a bursary for a deserving student each year, in perpetuity. It also acts as a significant major gift commitment to support the fundraising efforts of the Great Boys campaign. Other reunion classes have now also embraced the idea of class giving, eager to follow the class of 1987’s lead. As the Chair of the Fundraising Committee of the Alumni Executive, it is my goal to see a greater number of our alumni support Crescent, knowing that each gift to the School is a meaningful one. My thanks to our alumni who continue to support Crescent with their time and financial resources. We will ensure Crescent moves into its next century with the support of its past students firmly behind it. Sincerely, Rob Watt ’85, P’14 Chair, Fundraising Committee Alumni Executive Committee

As at June 30, 2012, The Crescent School Foundation endowment achieved a year-end value of $5.48 million, its highest year-end closing ever. During the past year, The Foundation received donations of $469,592 directed largely to the School’s Great Boys campaign in support of programmatic initiatives including International Outreach, Student Financial Aid, Robotics and Technology and Crescent Student Services/R&D in Boys’ Education. The Crescent School Foundation, established in 1994, makes an annual distribution to the School to fund various programmes, in perpetuity. In addition to the campaign programmatic initiatives, The Foundation’s annual disbursement continues to support programmes such as Local Outreach, scholarships, prizes and bursaries, Leadership in Sports, Mathematics, Athletics and Music. The Foundation Directors review quarterly and annual financials, and establish and review policies in an effort to ensure the health and growth of the Foundation’s assets in both the short and long term. As always, I encourage you to consider supporting The Foundation and, in particular, one of the campaign’s programme priorities through a gift to the Foundation’s Endowment. Crescent’s Finance and Advancement Offices deserve special thanks for continuing to ensure the smooth running of The Foundation over this past year. In March of 2012, I stepped down as Chair of The Crescent School Foundation but am pleased to report that the reigns have been passed along into the capable hands of Barry Gordon ’87, P’21, The Foundation’s new Chair. Sincerely, Michael Donnelly ’88, P’18 Chair, The Crescent School Foundation (Sept. 2011 – March 2012)

When we were first asked, back in 2009, to consider being Co-Chairs of Crescent School’s Great Boys campaign, neither of us could have foreseen how much we would come to cherish our roles. Each of us has had the opportunity to get to know so many wonderful Crescent School current and past parents, grandparents and, of course, alumni. We have had the opportunity to share with members of our Crescent family a vision for the Crescent School of the future and the tremendous impact that all of the new facilities and programme initiatives are and will continue to have on our boys. Speaking of boys… our involvement in the campaign has given us each a unique opportunity to reflect on what Crescent School has meant to our families and our sons. From Barb: My connection to Crescent School began in September 2001 when my oldest son, Derek McFarland, enrolled in grade 6. A year later, Jeff started at Crescent in grade 5 and finally, Scott donned a green blazer and joined his brothers as a new grade 3 student. Derek graduated in 2008 and headed off to Queen’s University to study Engineering, graduating this past June. Jeff graduated in 2010 and is in the Commerce programme at Queen’s, and Scott is now in grade 11 at Crescent. My family’s association with Crescent has been deeply enriching, with my boys receiving an amazing education, participating in countless teams, bands and co-curricular activities, and all of us, including Bob and me, making life-long friendships. Saying thank you is the best job I have as a Great Boys Campaign CoChair, and I sincerely thank all of you for the tremendous generosity your families have shown to Crescent School. From Paul: Our family joined Crescent in 2006 when my oldest son, Matthew, enrolled in grade 9. Alexander enrolled a year later in grade 7, and Nicolas started in grade 9 in 2008. Matthew ’10 is currently studying Arts at Western, Nicolas ’12 is in Commerce at Queen’s and Alexander is set to graduate from Crescent in 2013. My wife, Anne-Marie, has taken on countless volunteer roles at the School, including running The Den last year. I completely agree with what Barb has said in that my family’s involvement and association with Crescent, as students, alumni, parents, athletes, and volunteers has been something we all cherish. My involvement as CoChair of the Great Boys campaign is an opportunity to give back to the School that has given my family so much. In our roles as Campaign Co-Chairs, we are now focused on raising the remaining $8 million to meet our campaign goal of $30 million and fully fund the new $13 million Library and Commons. Our sincerest thanks to those of you who have shown your support, and will show your support to the campaign by way of a leadership level gift or participation in our Annual Giving programme. We feel so fortunate to be part of the wonderful community that is Crescent School. Sincerely, Barb Black P’08,’10,’14 and Paul Tompkins P’10,’12,’13

Opening of the Lau Family Wing In the fall of 2011, Crescent School hosted two events to commemorate the opening of the Lau Family Wing. On September 20th, a special ceremony took place in the morning to welcome our faculty, staff and students into the amazing new space. The boys waited, with packs on their backs, as Graham Rotenberg ’12, Head Boy, cut the red ribbon to officially declare the Lau Family Wing open for learning. On November 23rd, the School hosted donors to the Great Boys campaign for another ribbon cutting, with thank yous to our committed supporters, tours of the three-level wing, and the opportunity to speak to teachers about how they are using the classrooms, breakout rooms, science lab and Harkness Table Classrooms for the benefit of our boys. Each event showcased the results of individual and collective generosity, hard work, determination, planning and the realization of a clear and concise vision.
