OF F IC E R

Our job in the Advancement Office at Crescent School is twofold: to make friends and raise funds, always in that order. We support Crescent’s mission, Men of Character from Boys of Promise, through a multitude of alumni programs and fundraising initiatives for our graduates, current and past parents, grandparents, students, faculty and staff, and friends. This report accounts for gifts made from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013, and we sincerely thank each and every donor who made a financial contribution to the School this year. You make us a better institution, and we are very grateful. Highlights from the 2012/13 fiscal year include: • $5.4 million pledged in new commitments to the School (the second best year in Crescent’s history) • A new $1.5 million pledge from Michael and Marilena Latifi, parents of Nicholas ’13 and Matthew ’21, in support of the Library and Commons project of the Great Boys campaign. In recognition of their commitment, Crescent School will proudly unveil the Latifi Family Commons in Fall 2014 • A new $1 million gift from an anonymous grandparent donor for needs-based Student Financial Aid. The B.B. Boden Scholarship will provide full tuition support for an outstanding student from grade 7 through grade 12 and will be awarded for the first time in the 2014/15 school year. • More than $1.1M pledged in support of Parent Annual Giving, including many double up and triple up commitments • More than 65 Crescent families have pledged commitments ranging from $100,000 to $5 million in support of the Great Boys campaign • $9 million pledged toward the $13 million Library and Commons project, the final capital initiative of the Great Boys campaign. Thanks to those who have already made major gift commitments, we achieved sufficient funding to break ground on the Library in June 2013, with the opening planned for September 2014. With more than $27 million pledged toward the Great Boys campaign, we are optimistic that we will secure enough commitments in the 2013/14 year to surpass our $30 million goal. We have $4 million left to raise for the Library and Commons project, plus smaller targets to meet for our programmatic initiatives that include International Outreach, Robotics and Technology and Crescent Student Services/Research & Development in Boys’ Education. We look forward to partnering with more families in the coming year to bring this landmark campaign to a successful end. With your help, we will help to provide facilities and programs that will further enhance the Crescent experience for current and future generations of students. None of our success would be possible without the tireless work, support and dedication of our Great Boys Campaign Co-Chairs, Paul Tompkins P’10, ’12, ’13 and Barb Black P’08, ’10, ’14. The Crescent community owes Barb, Paul and our Development Committee a huge debt of gratitude for their dedication to the campaign, and we sincerely thank our volunteers for their leadership and generosity. Thank you for your continuing support of Crescent School! Sincerely, John Lynch P’16, ‘18 Chief Advancement Officer

FROM R OB WAT T ’ 8 5 CHAIR, CRESCENT ALUMNI EXECUTIVE

I am proud to report that the 2012/13 year was a particular success for the Crescent Alumni Executive and the alumni base that we are honoured to serve. The School marked its Centennial Year with numerous meaningful celebrations, we expanded the offerings of the Alumni Internship Program, our social and mentoring/networking events had the strongest-ever attendance numbers, and our Alumni Executive has worked tirelessly to represent the interests of Crescent’s graduates, young and old. We have also made strides in increasing alumni financial support for the School. With participation as our goal, we continue to foster a strong culture of philanthropy among our alumni through support for priorities including the Leaving Class Gift, Class Funds, scholarships and bursaries, athletics and the arts. I am delighted to report that the Crescent School Alumni Golf Tournament has raised over $100,000 for the William L. Burridge Alumni Bursary since 2010, making that seminal annual event one of the 65 top donors to the Great Boys campaign. Alumni continue to stand as leaders for the School on both the friend-raising and fundraising fronts, and we intend to extend the depth and breadth of our support for Crescent as we begin the School’s second century. Of particular interest to us is the expansion of Student Financial Aid. Currently, 3% of the student body receives some sort of need- or merit-based financial assistance, and these funds are made possible through endowment disbursements and the School’s operating budget. We lag behind our peer schools in scholarship and bursary opportunities, and this is an entirely solvable problem: with a concerted effort by alumni, we can make a tremendous difference in the assistance that Crescent can offer to deserving boys who could not otherwise afford a Crescent education. We also seek to establish more bursaries like the Frederick W. Thompson Family Bursary, which offers first preference to sons of alumni who exhibit excellence in academic and co-curricular pursuits. With the mantra of “for alumni, by alumni” in mind, we look forward to seeing more sons of alumni, regardless of their family’s financial situation, stepping on campus in their green blazers and Crescent ties. With everyone’s hands on the oars, we can and will advance the impact that alumni make for current and future Boys of Promise, and I thank all alumni who support the School faithfully each year. Sincerely, Rob Watt ’85, P’14 Incoming Chair, Crescent Alumni Executive

As at June 30, 2013, The Crescent School Foundation achieved a year end value of $7.5 million, its highest year end closing ever. During the past year, the Foundation received donations of almost $1.74 million directly toward the School’s Great Boys campaign in support of programmatic initiatives including International Outreach, Student Financial Aid, Robotics and Technology and Crescent Student Services/ R&D in Boys’ Education. Of particular note is a $1 million gift made anonymously by a Crescent School grandparent in support of Student Financial Aid. This marks the Foundation’s single largest commitment since its establishment in 1994 and is a tremendous boost to Crescent’s financial aid program. Special recognition and thanks are due to John Lynch and the entire Advancement team for their great work. Annually, the Foundation distributes funds to the School in support of various programs in perpetuity. In addition to the campaign programmatic initiatives, the Foundation’s annual disbursement continues to support Local Outreach, scholarships, prizes and bursaries, Leadership in Sports, Mathematics, Athletics and Music. The Foundation’s Directors review quarterly and annual financials, and establish and review both investment and disbursement policies, as well as the firms that we employ to manage Foundation funds, in an effort to preserve and grow the Foundation’s assets in the long term. There are currently three primary objectives of the Foundation’s Investment Policy and Guidelines: a) Income Objective – the fund will seek to provide a reliable source of funds for disbursement consistent with the spending requirements of the Foundation; b) Long Term Growth Objective – The fund will seek to provide a real rate of return consistent with long term growth of capital, factoring in inflation, with reasonable and prudent levels of risk; and c) C apital Preservation Objective – The fund will seek to diversify its holdings and allocate assets in order to minimize individual security and sector risks. The Directors of the Foundation strive to ensure these objectives are being achieved. The money donated by individuals is very important to us, and we take our responsibilities very seriously. We hope we will continue to deserve your trust and confidence in the years ahead. As always, I encourage you to consider supporting the Foundation and, in particular, one or more of the campaign’s programmatic initiatives through a gift to the Foundation’s Endowment. All donations will receive a charitable gift receipt from The Crescent School Foundation, for tax purposes. On behalf of the Foundation’s Board, I also want to take this opportunity to thank retiring Directors, Tim Wiggan ’90, P’19, ’21, for his invaluable service over the past 7 years, and Michael Donnelly ’88, who served for 4 years, including 1 year as Chair. Sincerely, Barry Gordon ’87, P’21 Chair, The Crescent School Foundation

Another school year is upon us, and the Great Boys campaign steams ahead! The 2012/13 year was incredibly successful, which is no small feat in the latter stages of a campaign: we secured a total of $5.499 million in new commitments, Crescent’s second-best fundraising year ever. This outstanding achievement for our boys was made possible in large part by more families stepping up to make gifts in the range of $50,000 to $1.5 million. We thank these members of the Crescent Family for joining us in financially supporting the transformative initiatives of the Great Boys campaign, particularly for our current funding priority, the $13 million Library and Latifi Family Commons project. Major gifts are a key component of any large-scale campaign, but we also owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the vast majority of Crescent parents who faithfully support the Parent Annual Giving program every year. Many families continue to double or triple their contributions for each son, and we are particularly grateful for their strong support. Parents consistently contribute over $1 million each year via the Parent Annual Giving program, which in turn helps to fund campaign priorities including the Library and Latifi Family Commons, Innes Field, the Lau Family Wing, the Margaret Donnelly Lower School Library and our four programmatic initiatives for International Outreach, Robotics & Technology, Crescent Student Services/Research & Development in Boys’ Education and Student Financial Aid. In the next year, we seek to fully fund every campaign priority, and we hope that those families who have not yet supported Great Boys will add their names to the ever-growing list of donors. We ask that all members of the Crescent community consider making a stretch commitment at a level with which they are comfortable to ensure our collective success. We want to stress how proud and grateful we are to all parent, alumni, past parent and grandparent donors for supporting Crescent to the best of their abilities. Your involvement and contributions make Crescent a better school for our sons, and when the time comes, our grandsons. Current and future boys of promise will reap countless benefits from the seeds that you have planted with your generosity throughout the Great Boys campaign, and we thank you for all that you do for Crescent School. Sincerely, Barb Black P’08, ’10, ’14 and Paul Tompkins P’10, ’12, ’13
