OVER 100 YEARS OF CHARACTER. Since 1913, character has been at the centre of a Crescent education. Our focus on character development is part of our DNA and what makes us stand out. It involves a deep, uncompromising commitment to three critical areas that we believe bring out the best in boys: relational learning, mentoring and character-in-action. At Crescent, your boy will be surrounded each and every day by faculty and staff who model what it looks like to lead a values-based life. Our teachers and coaches will forge a powerful connection with your boy, making certain that he feels known, cared for and recognized as an individual. These dedicated professionals will serve as his mentors, establishing a meaningful relationship with him that will not only be a precondition to his character development but also to his ongoing engagement in learning.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS ALIVE AT CRESCENT. Character education in our Lower School is designed to provide learning experiences and opportunities for our young boys of promise that guide them on their life-long journey towards becoming men of character. Our Lower School has a theme-based character education curriculum. These themes (Authentic Relationships, Personal Responsibility, Managing Relationships and Serving Others) permeate the Lower School and are integrated into every aspect of our Lower School culture. A companion Character Recognition program acknowledges student behaviour that exemplifies the core values of the School. Throughout our Middle School, character development is practised daily in the classroom, during themed assemblies, on the sports field, in the arts and in our co-curriculars. In our mentor program, teachers assure our boys that they are valued and valuable. Crescent provides Middle School boys with vital opportunities to develop a sense of responsibility and caring, as well as to acquire worthwhile citizenship, teamwork and leadership skills.
A boy who explores is a man who discovers.

The character development process continues in our Upper School where teachers mentor small groups of boys, providing them with essential guidance and support. With wideranging co-curricular programs in the arts, athletics, robotics, business studies and politics – as well as local, national and international outreach opportunities – students are able to find and pursue their passions and become fully immersed in the life of the School and the broader community. Senior boys are encouraged to hone their leadership skills by serving as Head Boy, Prefects and House Captains, or through other meaningful mentoring opportunities, to help them transition to Men of Character from Boys of Promise.

A SCHOOL THAT UNDERSTANDS WHAT MAKES BOYS TICK. So, why should you send your boy to a school for boys? Research studies prove that boys have unique learning styles and that boys grow, play and learn quite differently than girls. As a school for boys, Crescent is equipped to meet your son’s development needs every step of the way. We are leaders in boys’ education, keenly engaged in a wide range of boyrelated research, both in-house and through collaborative efforts with preeminent universities and other institutions. Our literacy and numeracy programs include materials that are relevant to boys’ lives and we use a variety of classroom tools and teaching practices specifically geared to boys. Additionally, we have invested in a world-class field surface that extends the season for outdoor physical education, recognizing the physicality of boys. Perhaps most notable, we place a strong emphasis on a relational style of learning, because we understand that boys learn best when they have positive adult role models with whom they can relate and from whom they can seek support.
A boy who is engaged is a man who is empowered.

ACADEMIC RIGOUR WITHIN A HIG HLY SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT. A Crescent education is exciting, fulfilling and broad. Our curriculum is taught by highly motivated teachers who understand that establishing a relationship with a boy unlocks the door to learning and engages him in his character development. At Crescent, we exceed the overall and specific expectations of the Ontario Ministry of Education and then enrich each subject level to challenge our students. Throughout your boy’s Crescent education, he will be exposed to a multi-faceted landscape that will allow him to find his true passions and the learning skills that work best for him. He will be given ample opportunity to develop as an innovative, inquisitive and creative learner. He will be celebrated for both his work and work ethic and guided academically and emotionally on his journey to becoming a Man of Character. Crescent Student Services provides wellness programs and learning resources to support and enable our boys to reach their full potential in all facets of life. Academic support helps our boys develop the learning skills that are so integral to becoming a proficient learner. Social-emotional support is available to broaden our boys’ understanding of who they are and how they want to mature into Men of Character. We are committed to our boys’ wellbeing, regularly incorporating the latest findings on nutrition, exercise and sleep into all we do. INSPIRING BOYS THROUGH ATHLETICS, THE ARTS, CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND OUTREACH. At Crescent, learning is not strictly confined to the classroom. There are so many ways for your boy to nurture his mind, body and spirit. Crescent athletics are “Character-in-Action” opportunities for coaches to teach boys values above winning, including teamwork and respect. Boys can participate in over 70 sport teams such as volleyball, cross-country, track and field, hockey, swimming, baseball and tennis. The School’s flagship team sports are soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter and rugby in the spring. Crescent’s commitment to the arts is clearly demonstrated by our superb facilities and the dedication of our teachers and coaches. In the Lower School, vocal music is a key component, as well as art classes inspiring creativity in every medium. In the Middle and Upper Schools, curricular arts include music, drama and art, each guided by specialists. Upper School boys can participate in co-curricular music ensembles. In Grade 10, Media Arts is introduced allowing students to present even their grandest ideas through website design, video production, print, photography, sound and animation. In all grades, boys can enhance their music education through Crescent’s private music conservatory.
A boy who is supported is a man who champions others.
Your boy will have access to a wide variety of co-curricular activities. We encourage all students to try something they may never have tried before. There are clubs or teams for virtually every kind of interest, including chess, debating, technology, environment and even a peer-tutoring club. Our robotics team has won numerous competitions both at home and abroad and our business team is consistently awarded top honours in regional, provincial and international DECA case competitions. Budding financiers can join our investment club where students manage a portfolio of stocks competing with the S&P/TSX 60 Index. Crescent outreach develops Men of Character by offering opportunities for boys like yours to discover and demonstrate their character. Our outreach programs allow our boys to gain compassion for others both in our community and abroad and help them understand how they can make the world a better place. Through their involvement in local, national and international community service, students become aware of their role in society, and more importantly, become sensitive to the needs of others.
