As we reflect on the past year, many might dwell on the COVID-19 global pandemic, the government shutdown of schools and businesses, and the ensuing economic and healthcare crises. However, my thoughts are filled with images of our community coming together in the face of this challenge. I will never forget how quickly our faculty and staff mobilized during March Break to launch our Virtual Learning Program. I was inspired by teachers and students who embraced new technologies and ways of connecting for remote learning. I was encouraged by the support from parents as Crescent pivoted with the times. And I was awed by how our alumni and community members contributed to the fight against the pandemic. We are living through challenging times, yet these times have brought out the best in Crescent. This response is not surprising and is part of what makes Crescent unique. The Crescent Way encompasses how we educate our boys and how we develop our staff. But equally important, it embodies the ethos of our community. Our culture is shaped by the values of respect, responsibility, honesty and compassion, and is supported by Crescent families — past and current — and alumni who embody these values. We are made better by your engagement and generosity. We simply could not do what we do without you. The past school year also marked the conclusion of our 2015-2020 Strategic Plan. I am pleased to report that we achieved everything we set out to do. Our next Strategic Plan, which began in September 2020, builds upon the groundwork of the past five years and focuses on four pillars: Our Way, Our People, Our Campaign and Our Future. It is important work that will continue to make Crescent a great place for boys to learn and grow. We do not need a global pandemic to remind us how exceptional our community is. Your generous dedication to our mission is demonstrated year over year. Your partnership in Crescent’s future is fundamental to our success. Thank you for being such a vital part of our Crescent Way. Once again the Crescent School community members - students, staff, alumni, parents, grandparents, past parents and friends - rallied in their support of the School with their advice, numerous volunteer commitments, and generous philanthropic support. We are humbled by the active participation of our community members. As we know, independent schools do not receive any support from governments and tuition payments cover the operating budget of the school. It is only through donations that we are able to provide the margin of excellence that is expected of our school. New buildings and equipment, enhanced curricular and co-curricular programs, and student financial assistance to enable some of the best and brightest boys from across the GTA to attend Crescent are all examples of improvements to Crescent made possible because of donations. Some major gift philanthropic highlights of this past year include: • $2,230,100 in support of capital improvements and additions • $365,000 for endowed student financial assistance • $75,900 for expendable student financial assistance • $109,710 for enhancements to our Character-in-Action Programs And once again, our Parent Annual Giving Program, the backbone of ongoing support for the School, contributed an additional $1,109,161 in donations to Crescent. More than 72% of our hard working staff members made a voluntary contribution to the School. 71% of Class of 2020 parents donated to establish The Class of 2020 Scholarship Fund in support of endowed student financial assistance and purchased 36 Crescent branded chairs in honour of their sons, raising over $86,225. All in, $3,890,511 was pledged in support of Crescent School by our generous community members in fiscal year 2019/2020. Thank you! We are most grateful for the leadership provided by Crescent parent and Governor George Mavroudis P’18, ‘26, for his role as Development Committee Chair. The members of the Development Committee work tirelessly with the Headmaster and Advancement staff to provide their advice and support and they encourage others to follow their lead. M essage from T i m W a t so n ’ 0 1 CH A I R , A l u m n i E x e c u t i v e c omm i t t ee The 2019/20 year was another success for our Crescent Alumni Executive, of which I have the privilege of Chairing. The Alumni Executive is an outstanding group of committed alumni who volunteer their time to chair and assist in the running and implementation of our varied alumni events and programs. Without their service, we could not offer the programs that we do. Highlights of the 2019/20 school year include: • Celebrating and honouring our Alumni Recognition Program winners: – Alumni Excellence Award - Gerald Chan ’99 – Young Alumni Excellence Award - Eric Khoury ’06 – Community Leadership Award - Michael Yan ’05 • Playing an active role in welcoming the Class of 2020 to the Crescent alumni brotherhood by: – Having 10 alumni participants in the Grade 12 Enrichment week – Inviting Evan Solomon ’87 to address the alumni and welcome them via a YouTube video – Having 19 alumni write handwritten notes to the grads that were mailed to their homes • Publishing a special edition of Past & Present focusing on the tremendous work the Crescent community did in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic • Welcoming back 61 alumni to campus in February to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Robotics Program • Hosting over 190 alumni at a variety of events in the fall and winter term, an outstanding number despite having to cancel all our spring alumni events, including our much enjoyed Alumni Reunion • Raising over $230,000 from alumni primarily in support of student financial assistance • Increased engagement on the Crescent Alumni Network with 989 alumni now connecting on this platform I want to take this opportunity to offer my thanks, on behalf of the Alumni Executive Committee, to the Advancement Office, for their great work and support throughout 2019/20. In particular, I’d like to thank Jill Cannon, Leslie Pringle and Kathryn Foster who work tirelessly on our behalf. This was my first year serving in the role as Chair of the Alumni Executive and I am looking forward to continuing our efforts as we deepen our engagement with our alumni community. As at June 30, 2020, The Crescent School Foundation achieved a year-end value of $16.4 million, its highest year-end closing ever despite uncertain market conditions in the spring of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. New donations were directed towards Student Financial Assistance, Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund, Robotics and Technology, Crescent Student Services, and Local Outreach. I would like to offer a special thank you to my fellow parents of the Class of 2020 who established The Class of 2020 Scholarship in honour of our sons’ graduation. These parents raised over $86,000 with $78,000 allocated to the scholarship in support of Student Financial Assistance. In FY20, The Foundation disbursed over $528,000 toward various School programs with approximately 77% directed by our generous donors to support needs-based Student Financial Assistance. This annual disbursement continues in perpetuity ensuring critical funding to key programmatic areas that directly benefit our boys. The Foundation’s Directors review quarterly and annual financials, and establish and review investment and disbursement policies. In addition, the Foundation Board conducts annual reviews of the firms we employ to manage the endowment, in an effort to preserve and grow the Foundation’s assets in the long term. This year, Foundation Directors worked harder than ever to ensure they fulfilled their responsibilities amid these unprecedented times. Endowment donations are incredibly important to ensure the sustainability of the School’s programs and we take our stewardship responsibility in this regard very seriously. We hope we will continue to receive your trust and confidence in the years ahead. As always, I encourage you to consider supporting The Foundation and, in particular, Student Financial Assistance. This is a Board funding priority that truly changes lives. All donations made to The Crescent School Foundation receive a charitable gift receipt for tax purposes. While tuition covers the cost of fundamental school operations, it is the generosity of giving through charitable gifts that provide the much-needed support for new facilities, enhancements to our signature academic programs and additional funds for Student Financial Assistance. We are truly proud of the rich heritage of generosity that has existed at Crescent School, for decades, in support of our sons’ educational experience. All of the facilities on campus that our boys benefit from each and every day are the direct result of the generosity of current and past parents, alumni and grandparents. They have supported the School to ensure we can evolve with the changing needs of a future Crescent education. I feel deeply that it is the responsibility of every generation of Crescent families to do the same, and support the School for current AND future boys of promise. Despite the uncertainty created last spring by the COVID-19 pandemic, our community showed a tremendous philanthropic commitment. Our Parent Annual Giving program, which raised over $1.1 million in 2019/20, is the most successful program of its kind among our peer schools in the GTA. Our community continues to be generous, resulting in a total of almost $3.9 million in new pledge commitments in 2019/20. At this time, the majority of our major gift and Parent Annual Giving fundraising is directed towards needs-based Student Financial Assistance and the Master Campus Plan, which relates directly to the School’s 2020/24 Strategic Plan. We are grateful to all of our donors for their thoughtful and ongoing support of this school that means so much to all of us. I am so very proud to be part of the Crescent School community, which year after year, continues to inspire us all with its generosity, encouragement, commitment and passion for the School’s mission. I am also privileged to serve on the Board of Governors and as Chair of the Development Committee, both of which are comprised of committed and hard-working volunteers, and I thank each of them for their efforts over the last year.
