‘It’s flattering to get A BIG STORYLINE’ A Gemma Atkinson on her Emmerdale love story and staying in shape
s Emmerdale’s chaotic Carly Hope, Gemma Atkinson has had quite a start to life back in soapland. Gemma, 31, spent over five years playing Lisa Hunter in Hollyoaks and, after appearing in films, theatre and going into the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! jungle, she joined the cast of Emmerdale at the start of last year. “It has been amazing and it has flown by,” Gemma says. “It has felt really quick, which is a good sign, I’m told! But since day one everyone has been lovely. It helped that I knew a lot of the cast and crew before I joined, which was nice. It is on my doorstep and I can go home every day.” It’s been a successful time for the show, too, and Gemma says that winning the Best Soap gong at the British Soap Awards this year has made for a great bonding experience. “I feel very lucky to be involved, and the fact that we won Best Soap was very flattering for everyone who was involved,” she says. “We were all very pleased and grateful that we finally won it, so it was nice to experience that with everyone as well.” Carly’s steamiest storyline so far starts this week when she finally gets together with Marlon after becoming babysitter to his daughter, April. It’s a big move for Gemma’s character, so TV Life caught up with the star to hear all about it and how Gemma manages to stay in shape for her demanding job… Hi Gemma! So Carly and Marlon finally get together… They’ve been spending a lot of time together with her being April’s babysitter, and gradually over time they start to realise they have feelings for each other. Carly had a baby boy, Billy, who died, and one evening she confides in Marlon that it would have been his birthday so she is a bit down in the dumps. So to cheer her up they end up playing this new zombie game on the computer that they both love and it leads to a kiss which then leads to them sleeping together. I think it’s like when Joey starts fancying Rachel
on Friends! But it’s that forbidden fruit where if you start falling for your friend, is it worthwhile pursuing it or do you not ruin the friendship? What would you like to happen for them? I’d like them to end up together. It would be nice for Carly to have someone who genuinely loves her. In soapland that would be easy and obvious, so I think they will put a few twists and turns in before anything like that will happen for them! Did you get a good response to the sudden infant death syndrome storyline? The feedback on the subject matter was really good. It was really flattering. It was really sad as well to read people’s own experiences but I had a lot of people message me and say that how it was played is exactly how they deal with it. They try to blot it out but every now and again they just can’t. They are going to do a lot more with that, because it had such good feedback and it helped a lot of people. Carly was also in the Emmerdale fire recently. What was that like to film? It was a really good few days. It was good to get out of the studio and feel like an action-movie star for the day!
They can do so much now and when we get to do big storylines such as the fire, it is always flattering to be involved because you know you have got to put that extra effort in but you know it always pays off. Now you’ve been in Emmerdale for a while, do people come up and talk to you as if you’re Carly? It’s funny because I still get a lot of people talking about Hollyoaks. But there are a few people now who will say, “Oh that’s that girl from Emmerdale.” So it is nice. I left Hollyoaks nearly 10 years ago now, so the fact they still remember is nice. Would you ever go back to Hollyoaks? It is doing really well at the minute and I never say never with anything, but at the minute I am more than happy where I am and it is nice to give the Hollyoaks lot evils at the soap awards! We are all very friendly and it is nice to have a catch-up and a drink with them, but as soon as the awards are done it is show time and game on for Team Emmerdale! In the past you have also done reality shows like I’m A Celebrity.Would you do any more reality shows? Yes, I think so. There are so many of them now. Strictly Come Dancing is

a good one. It has still got a classy factor about it, whereas some of them I don’t even watch. I did love doing the jungle, it was amazing. It was three of the best weeks of my life really, to get to live outside in Australia and meet lots of great people. But there is always a danger, I think, that when people do reality shows, they might do that and nothing else so I feel very lucky that I have managed to do all of them – TV, theatre and reality – and still be working. You recently took to Instagram to address people who had made negative comments about your weight. Do you ever get used to that kind of thing? I don’t think I am used to it in that it happens all the time but it’s more – without being horrible – a lack of caring for a stranger’s opinion. I always try and put out a positive body image of being healthy as opposed to looking a certain way. For me, I am 5ft 9in, 11st and if I was to get very light and thin, I might look a bit better to some people, but I wouldn’t look healthy or feel healthy. If I put a bit of weight on and my mum says, “Oh, you’ve put a bit of weight on this holiday,” or I’m aware of it myself, then that is fine and you make a decision to do something. But if it is a stranger on Twitter who says you look too big then for something to offend you, you have to first value their opinion. If it is a stranger I have learnt not to. So is there too much pressure on women to look a certain way? I feel lucky that when I was doing Hollyoaks we didn’t have social media.

It is great for promoting charities and work you are doing or for getting your opinion across but it is also bad that it gives idiots a voice as well. The only pressure you feel is the pressure you allow yourself to feel and I have never felt that I have to be a role model for a specific body type. I go up and down like most women do. I have never felt pressure myself, but I think that nowadays with all the filters you can use, a lot of young girls assume that that is how you look 24/7. My niece is only 12 and I’d hate her to think that if she doesn’t have the Ludwig filter skin and the Photoshop waist that she’s not good enough. I would like her to feel that she is beautiful as she is. You’re often pictured coming out of the gym. What kind of workouts do you do? I train five times a week. I like to do a lot of weight training. I do Thai boxing, I do yoga. I like to switch it up and keep myself interested. I think that once you’re training for a purpose other than to lose weight, it becomes enjoyable. I haven’t got a specific goal or target, I just do it because it makes me feel good and it makes me feel healthy. Whereas I think that for girls who are doing it just to lose weight that is when it becomes a chore or boring. Obviously, if I have got a photo shoot or I’m going on holiday then I step it up a bit more, but other than that it is just to get my endorphins up and get the blood pumping and make the most of my body. Is it true that you train at 4.30am? I did that this morning, to be honest! When I’ve got a full day, that’s the only time I can do it. So I got up at 4.20am and I trained until about 5.15am. Then I showered, left for work at 6am, and was here for 7am. But I went to bed at 9.30pm, so it’s that old thing when people say I haven’t got time to train – you have if you just make the time. Are you still going out with your personal trainer, Olly Foster? We’re not together any more but he’s still my personal trainer. We trained together the other week. We just get on better as friends. He does my training and he does my nutrition because he knows his stuff and he knows how my body works and what I react to with training or with food. So if I have a shoot or anything coming up, he’s my go-to for getting in shape. That’s very mature to remain friends and train together! We were very amicable about it and I said to my mum, “I feel very grown-up in this break-up,” so it’s nice that we can still be friends.

‘I’m always
feeling broody!’ Corrie star Jane Danson reveals why Leanne’s shock pregnancy is making her want another baby!
I
t’s one of the most shocking and unexpected storylines in a soap this year. Leanne is pregnant – with Steve’s baby! Coronation Street fans have only just discovered the two had a secret one-night stand and now she’s expecting his child. It is not the first time Leanne has courted controversy. She’s had an affair with an older man, has been attacked by her stepson, Simon, and has been both a drug addict and a prostitute. However, taking on the role of a pregnant woman shouldn’t be too much of a challenge for actress Jane Danson, who has played Leanne for nearly two decades and has two children, Harry, 10, and Sam, seven, with her husband, actor Robert Beck. Here, Jane, 37, tells TV Life why Leanne and Steve are in for a rough ride, and how she juggles a successful acting career with being a mum… So Leanne is pregnant and Steve’s the father. How could she?! Steve and Michelle were on a break! When I read the script, I was like, “What? How did that happen?” But this story opens up a can of worms for many other characters. Even though it’s Leanne’s story, it branches out and becomes several different stories.

8 TV LIFE
How does Leanne feel about being pregnant? She’s a bit shocked. It’s not the bestcase scenario in terms of how it’s happened, but given her previous history there’s no question of what she’s going to do. This is possibly her last chance to have a baby of her own. She’d have preferred it to have been in a better situation but nothing’s ever simple with Leanne, is it? What does Steve think about it? Oh, he’s not happy! He kind of blames her and doesn’t take responsibility, asking her why she didn’t use any protection. They’re both in shock but they have to deal with it. The viewers haven’t ever seen them romantically linked so this all comes out of the blue. Will this be a good thing for her? I hope so. I know she wants to be the mum she never had and make her life better than her own early days. She wants a stable family life but it always goes wrong and she’ll have to do the best to make it work. Things are just back on track with Simon. How will he react? He’s going through some changes and the last year hasn’t been easy for them but they’ve come through it. So she reassures him that he’s still her son and no matter how many children she has she’ll always be there for him. Does anyone know who the dad is? She tells a few white lies. She knows if she opens her mouth it’s all going to blow up so she says it’s a one-night
stand with a stranger that didn’t mean anything and that shouldn’t have happened. It was a one-nighter – it’s just that it was with somebody who lives across the road! How will Steve’s wife, Michelle, react if she finds out? That’s something for much further down the line. It throws a few obstacles in Leanne’s path and makes her feel even more terrible than she already does. Before that, a friendship forms between Leanne and Michelle, which hasn’t been explored before. So it’s a big mess. Do actresses like playing pregnant parts and is the fake padding frustrating or an excuse to eat whatever you like? Ask me in a few months! I’ve never played pregnant before but I’m getting myself prepared for the big bump. Will it make you broody? I’m always broody – I’m that kind of person. Because I have two kids, I’ll know how Leanne feels and how she’ll carry herself. How does it feel when a big storyline lands in your lap? The nature of the show is that the storylines come in peaks and
troughs. You have quiet patches and it builds up again, so I’m always excited and amazed at what they’ll come up with next for Leanne. Given that she has been through so many different phases in her life, it’s a brilliant opportunity to sink my teeth into a fresh new challenge. I’m really excited. It’s quite a big storyline that goes on for a while. Do you miss working with anyone who has left the show? The Battersby clan came in together and none of us knew what to expect or how it was going to pan out, so it’s a given that I miss working with them. Leanne’s had so many amazing partners, too, like Bradley Walsh and Chris Gascoyne, and you do miss them because you build up a rapport and feel bereft when they’ve gone. Celebrities such as Sir Ian McKellen and Peter Kay have had guest roles in the soap.Who would you invite to take part? I’m a big fan of The Americans so I’d invite Matthew Rhys as I think he’s awesome. He could pop in and be Leanne’s new chap! Could you ever be friends with Leanne in real life? She’s mellowed quite a lot and she has some good points but she does some really stupid things and doesn’t really think of the consequences until it’s too late. So we’d probably have a little bit of debate here and there, but at the same time I’ve got to love her because if I didn’t love her I couldn’t play her. There’s something about her I like. Do you have a say on her outfits? Yes, she’s gone through various phases over the years and since she’s been working in the bistro she’s become quite businesslike in her clothes. She’s looked after herself a little bit more in the last couple of years but there have been some dreadful outfits along the way.

Above: Lady in red – Jane’s style is completely different from that of her alter ego Leanne TV LIFE 9
How does your own wardrobe differ from Leanne’s? I’m a bit more twee than her. She’s risqué sometimes but I’m more casual – she’s all dressed up with nowhere to go! The younger girls on Corrie have got such an eye for fashion so I often ask Brooke Vincent to style me an outfit. I’m complete high-street, I’m grab and go. I get it wrong a lot so the girls give me the dos and don’ts! What have been your favourite storylines to date? I’ve had so many brilliant ones. I did like Leanne’s affair with Danny Baldwin. She was so much younger than him. It was fun and a bit sexy and he was a rich sugar daddy and Leanne was quite outrageous and quite brazen with the way she was acting and the clothes she was wearing. That was a highlight. And another highlight must have been winning Rear Of The Year in 2000… (Laughs) They awarded me a silver plate, similar to the ones they give out at Wimbledon, but it’s up in the loft. It’s not in the house for everyone to see! Where do your fans approach you most frequently? Because you’re in people’s living rooms so many nights a week, people feel they know you, so most people say, “Oh, hi,” like you’re a pal. Sometimes I’m not sure if I do know them or not. It was more intense when I was younger, but now I have a family and spend all my time with them, people don’t bother me as much. How do you make time for a full-time career, motherhood and being married to another actor? Unlike any other acting job, (in a soap) you have a schedule that’s quite rigid and I go home every night to my children and husband. And because he’s an actor, he understands you can have busy periods and quieter ones. Weekends are precious, with family time and kids’ clubs. Have the children shown any interest in acting? Not particularly. They get involved in school plays but it’s too early to say. It’s not something I’d discourage, because I was a child actor. If it’s what they want to do, I’d definitely be supportive. How long do you think you will stay in Corrie? I take it a year at a time. I love the show, I don’t take it for granted, but sometimes you can be a casualty of the way a story goes. CORRIE IS ON ITV ON MONDAYS AND FRIDAYS AT 7.30PM, AND ON WEDNESDAYS AT 7.30PM AND 8.30PM

aura Trott’s double win at the 2012 London Olympics only seems like five minutes ago. But in a few weeks’ time, she will be competing in the Rio De Janeiro games. And she’s been training hard to reach the podium while working as a DFS ambassador. “Rio 2016 is obviously my first Games away from home, so it’s an experience in itself and something I’m looking forward to taking in,” she says. “I want to achieve what I did at London 2012.” The 24 year old and her Olympic cyclist fiancé Jason Kenny, 28, barely have time to catch up between training sessions, so Team GB’s homeware

sponsor DFS stepped in to revamp the couple’s living room in a bid to help them relax before the big games. “They’ve transformed our living room from head to toe,” she reveals. “Now, we have a beautiful place to relax and host our friends and family.” Here, Laura chats about going for gold, the Olympics build-up and DIY… Are you excited about Rio? I’m really excited. It’s my second Games and it’s come around so fast but at least I’ve had time to prepare. The London events happened so fast. This time, I’m taking it in. What are you looking forward to the most in Rio? Competing! That’s what I train for. How do you think it will compare to London 2012? Because it was my first Games and because it was London, that was such a special moment for me. I find it hard to think that something could match it. Tell us about your training… We’ve just come out of a strength phase, which can be anything from two hours in the morning and a gym session to an afternoon at the track. Speed on the track can be anything from 1k as a team to 4k as a team (which is the event itself ). We do pre-Olympic training camps, too, working in warm weather. I don’t like being really hot, so I find it quite difficult – you get used to it, though. Are you aiming for another gold? I want to achieve what I did at London 2012. As a cyclist, every race you go into, you want to win, so it would be stupid for me to say I didn’t want to. What would you be happy with? We want to give 100 per cent. And as long as I come out feeling I’ve given that and been in the best form that I could be in, then that’s all I can do. Do you still get nervous before you compete? I get really nervous before any kind of race, even at the Revolution Series in Manchester. I care and I want to win.
Can you describe your diet? It depends on my training phase. I don’t have set foods or mealtimes. I’d get bored. When we’re in the gym or when I’m in a strength phase, it’s very protein-heavy – lots of milk and lots of meat. In a speed endurance phase, I’ll eat protein to hold the muscle and carbs to get me through the distance. What do you eat on your days off? I always have chocolate on rest days. What do you do on your days off? Relax. It’s great that I’m working with DFS because they’ve given me a living room makeover. It’s such a nice place for me to chill and be with Jason and the dogs. I think everyone thinks that it’s just the training and the time I spend on my bike that counts towards success. But rest is just as important. Are you a TV addict? Absolutely, I love TV. It’s always on in the background. It makes me feel like somebody is in the whole time. I love EastEnders – it’s a guilty pleasure. If I’ve missed one and recorded it, I’m excited to watch it the next day. Do you miss home when you’re away competing? Yes. Our eldest dog is Sprolo. We were going to get a chocolate Labrador and call him Rolo. We ended up with a sproodle, so I added the “Sp” and along came Sprolo. Our little one is called Pringle after the crisps. I was obsessed with them at the time. You’ve recently finished a home makeover – tell us a bit more… The walls have been stripped back and repainted and DFS provided all the decor. It’s nice to have a carpet that’s hard-wearing and won’t show a lot of dirt but is still stylish and beautiful. I’ve got new curtains
and blinds in grey with blush pink accents. We got a gorgeous blush pink corner sofa and an amazing grey footstool that doubles up as a seat. Is it important for you to have your friends and family over? Definitely – it only happens once in a blue moon. We’re always busy or away or Jason and I aren’t there together. How did you find the time for the makeover? It was lucky that DFS was on hand to help; Jason and I would never have got it done. We’re so busy all the time, so it was amazing that they took care of it all. Normally, to try and team up a carpenter with a painter with choosing furniture is a massive task. Are you good at DIY? No, not really. Jason is very hands-on. He even made a wood store. It’s really good. I’m terrible. I’m actually useless, to put it nicely. What interior styles do you like? I love shabby chic and things that have been restored. I love things looking old and rustic. Describe your style… Countryside. I love denim. The thing is, when we do go out, it’s to pubs or local places. So, for me, I don’t get massively dressed up. I’d rather be in denim and nice boots. What are your favourite highstreet shops and designers? I love Miss Selfridge, I’m literally addicted. I like all the pastel colours. Designer-wise, I don’t really have much stuff. I love Mulberry bags, but doesn’t everybody? What are your number one beauty products? I love Bobbi Brown bronzing powder. It’s just enough to put on before a race to make you feel nice and girlie.

orget beachside bikinis and summer sandals because we can’t wait to warm up with Stacey Solomon’s brand-new fashion collection. Her autumn/winter range, Stacey Solomon For Oli at Look Again, is full of on-trend pieces with added sparkle that are fit for every occasion. “I love winter clothes,” she says. “You can wrap up and get cosy. That’s what this collection is all about.” Mum-of-two Stacey’s range includes fluffy jumpers and highwaisted flares along with perfect party outfits like the ultimate sequin maxi dress and a sequin-topped playsuit. Here, 26-year-old Stacey, who is dating TV presenter Joe Swash, 34, chats style and all things health and tells us why she’s happier than ever… Tell us about your a/w collection… I’m really excited about it. It’s super warm, super cosy and pretty, too. There’s a lot of detail in my pieces. I’ve got a lovely beaded jumper and a full-glitter two-piece that I’m obsessed with. There’s something for every occasion. I love it. What inspired your designs? I’m a magpie. Glitter and sparkles catch my eye. I love charcoal shades. I’ve got a grey suedette pinafore, a furry grey jumper and a grey coat, all in different shades and materials. I really enjoyed designing them. What are your favourite pieces? I can’t wait to wear my black glitter two-piece outfit. I keep asking if it’s ready yet. I made a little deep red playsuit with a sequin top and plain shorts. I can’t wait to wear that, too. 14 TV LIFE
Which celebrities would you like to see wearing your range? It’s the biggest compliment to see anyone wearing my collection, whether they’re a celebrity or not. It’s the nicest feeling. Describe your style… Comfortable. I don’t like things that are too tight or too revealing. I don’t want to worry about whether a boob is going to fall out or if my bum is Dress, £60 Shoes, £48

showing. I hate that you have to choose between comfortable and stylish. I’m a mix between the two. What shapes and colours do you think suit you best? Pastel pink, mint green and light yellow colours suit me. I also love black, grey and white. You can wear them with anything and you’ve always got a pair of black shoes. Who are your style icons? I like lots of people’s style, but I wouldn’t necessarily dress like them. I always love what Angelina Jolie wears and Emma Watson always looks pretty. Have you ever had a fashion disaster? I’d just given birth to Leighton and was about to do some filming. I only brought one outfit and I was so excited to wear it. I thought my body was back to normal. It took about ten people backstage to get me into this dress. My brain had told me that I was back to a size 10. I was so wrong. What are your favourite high-street stores? I love Dorothy Perkins. They have really cool clothes that aren’t too revealing. I like Oasis and Warehouse, too. Everyone’s gone floral. I love it. What about designers? I love Stella McCartney. She makes outfits that are tailored to the individual. I bought her glitter jumpsuit which inspired my piece. It was so comfy, but fitted so well to complement my figure. How do you stay in shape? I’m lucky, my metabolism is fast. I do eat really well. I walk the kids to school and I go swimming, but I don’t go on the treadmill. My gym is lovely. You can swim or play games like squash and tennis. It doesn’t feel like exercise. I just want to play. Do you diet? I just enjoy healthy food and so do the boys. Our diet is pescatarian. We eat a lot of fish and vegetables. Do you have any guilty pleasure foods? Indian food. My favourite is just korma sauce and rice with poppadoms. What’s your top beauty secret? The more water I drink, the better my skin is. I really break out in spots if I don’t drink enough. When my wee is see-through, I know I’ve had enough. What are your favourite beauty products? I’ve just started buying Dr Organic products. They don’t contain any harsh chemicals and they smell great. Our family favourites are the shampoos, conditioners and deodorants. I like the make-up brand Collection. The products are so cheap and actually very
good. You won’t see their eyeshadows wearing off in five minutes. Can you remember when make-up was affordable? It’s making a comeback. How do you pamper yourself? The boys go to their dads’ every other weekend, so if I can plan in advance, I’ll have a weekend in the health spa Champneys, where I get a massage, eat good food and do nothing. What do you do in your free time? Joe and I work in the same industry so we’re usually all over the place. When we get a day off together, I like to be with him and have a bit of “us” time. How do you juggle work with being a mum and girlfriend? It’s the same as how anyone juggles it. It isn’t ideal and there just aren’t enough hours in the day, but you do it because that’s the situation you’re in. I love it, though. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even if you don’t have a job, being a mum is hard. Everyone just works as hard as they can. Do you have any top fashion and beauty tips for busy mums? Invest in a really good pair of leggings. I live in those things. Drink loads of water and keep your vitamins up. It’s hard enough being a mum, running around after the kids. You’ve got to keep your immune system healthy. Would you and Joe consider having children together? We’ve got three children between us and we’re just integrating our families and working on that at the moment. I’ve always wanted a big family. I’m one of seven. But it’s how the children feel and I’m not sure that it’s best for them. We’ll just have to wait and see. Do you have any family holidays coming up? I haven’t booked a summer holiday yet. I’m not sure I’ll get away. The boys have holiday time over my birthday this year, so we’re going to have a quick trip to Spain in October. I definitely need some vitamin D. What else are you up to at the moment? I’m currently working on some different campaigns and pilots. I’m really enjoying being a Loose Woman. It’s exciting stuff. Would you do any more reality TV shows? I never say never to anything, but I think I’ve done my fair share! Do you have any other plans? I’d love to build on my presenting career and just carry on doing what I’m doing. I want to work really hard and be good at what I do.

The anti-wrinkle diet
Health
How eating the right foods can give you a youthful glow
To make the most of your complexion and maintain a youthful glow, you need to care for your skin from the inside out – not just slather on anti-ageing creams. TV Life has teamed up with nutritionist and skin health expert Kim Pearson to find out what we should be eating – and what supplements we should be taking to look after our skin and hold back the years. “Oxidative stress, caused by excess free radical production, is a key accelerator of premature ageing,” says Kim. “When there is a lack of protective antioxidants in the body, free radicals attack our cells, damaging their molecular structure. This accelerates cellular ageing and contributes to the appearance of aged skin.” Give your skin a boost with these anti-wrinkle tips and recipes. FOR MORE INFO, VISIT REVIDOX.CO.UK
BOOSTYOUR INTAKE OF OMEGA-3 As we age, our skin becomes thinner and can become more prone to dryness. Essential fatty acids are needed in order for our skin to remain supple and moisturised from the inside out. Omega-3s are often lacking in our diets so it’s a good idea to include plenty of oily fish, avocado, unroasted nuts and seeds (especially linseed and flaxseed) in your diet
Antioxidants are important for good skin health, as they help to combat free radical damage to our cells – known to contribute to the appearance of prematurely aged skin. Take a beauty supplement rich in antioxidants like Revidox+ (£35 for a two-month supply, available from revidox.co.uk). Revidox+ contains skin-loving ingredients including selenium, zinc, vitamin C and pomegranate extract, as well as a new breakthrough superingredient called STILVID – an antioxidant derived from the skin of grapes which studies show can boost skin moisture and improve the appearance of wrinkles in just 60 days.
SUPER-SKIN-FOOD SALAD RECIPE Ingredients: Two handfuls of leafy green salad (such as spinach, rocket and watercress) Chilled roasted vegetables (cherry tomatoes, butternut squash, bell peppers etc) Two boiled organic eggs A small handful of chopped walnuts For the dressing: One tablespoon of linseed oil shaken with one tablespoon of lemon juice and black pepper This recipe combines protein, healthy fats and anti-oxidant rich vegetables, which are all essential for keeping your appearance youthful from the inside out. When we think of protein, many of us automatically think of meat, but organic eggs, wild fish, seafood and tofu are all good quality, healthy sources of protein that help to support our skin.
TRY A DIY ANTIOXIDANTVANILLA AND POMEGRANATE SMOOTHIE Ingredients: 80g pomegranate seeds One scoop of naturally flavoured, dairy-free vanilla protein powder One tablespoon of flaxseed Unsweetened almond milk – enough to achieve desired consistency
SKIN-BOOSTING SOUP Ingredients: Half a medium butternut squash, peeled, seeded and chopped into chunks 2 large carrots, chopped 2 cups of organic vegetable stock 1 teaspoon grated root ginger (or powder if fresh is not available) 1 teaspoon grated turmeric root (or powder if fresh isn’t available) 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk Pinch of ground black pepper In a large pan, place the butternut squash, carrots and stock. Cover and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer partially covered for approximately 20 minutes or until squash and carrots are soft. Cool and blend the cooked squash, carrots, ginger and turmeric with a little of the cooking liquid in a jug blender or use a hand blender. Pour the mixture back into the pan with the rest of the liquid left from cooking. Add the coconut milk and stir. Heat to desired temperature and serve immediately topped with black pepper. You can keep any leftovers in the fridge or freeze in portions. GREEN POWER Green tea is a powerful antioxidant for the skin. Sipping a cup throughout the day is a good way to provide a skin boost. If you prefer an iced tea in the summer, simply allow the tea to cool, pour it into a jug and pop it in the fridge. Pour a glass and add some fresh mint and a squeeze of fresh lemon – a great source of vitamin C which is vital for skin’s collagen production.
This delicious smoothie contains a variety of ingredients that are great for your skin. Antioxidantrich pomegranate is combined with omega-3 rich flaxseed and easily absorbable protein to support healthy skin structure and function. What more could you want from a drink?!
EAT A RAINBOW Brightly coloured fruit and vegetables contain phytonutrients plant nutrients that act as antioxidants and have been shown to directly protect skin cells from free-radical damage. The more colour and variety, the better – think broccoli, tomatoes, blueberries, lemons, peppers and oranges!

Bring the apple juice to a simmer. Remove the gelatine from the water and squeeze off any excess liquid. Whisk into the apple juice until fully dissolved and remove from the heat. Add the Pimm’s and lemonade, elderflower and lime juice. Fill 4 jam jars up to ¾ with the Pimm’s jelly liquid. Place the jars flat in the fridge and chill for 1 hour. Deseed the cucumber and dice into ½cm (¼in) cubes. Remove the tops of the strawberries and halve. After an hour chilling, evenly share the cucumber, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries between the jam jars, saving a few for the top of the jelly. Line a medium-sized baking tray with parchment. Place the sugar and syrup in a frying pan then put on a high heat for 2 minutes until it has fully dissolved and is lightly golden. Take it off the heat, whisk in the bicarbonate of soda and immediately pour it on to the parchment-lined baking tray. Allow the honeycomb to cool completely then break into pieces. Put the pieces on top of the jelly along with the extra berries.

Lemon and watercress houmous with veggie crisps Serves: 6 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes 1 beetroot, scrubbed 1 sweet potato, peeled 2 tbsps vegetable oil Flaky salt, to taste 3 carrots, peeled 2 parsnips, peeled 200g (7oz) watercress 2x400g (14oz) tins cooked chickpeas 1 garlic clove, peeled Juice and zest of 1 lemon 90ml (3½oz) extra virgin olive oil Preheat the oven to 160°C/320°F/gas mark 2½ and line a large baking tray with parchment. Using a mandolin, finely slice the beetroot and sweet potato. Using a tea towel, dab any excess
moisture off the vegetables and toss in 1 tablespoon of the vegetable oil. Spread out evenly on baking trays, sprinkle with flaky salt and bake for 10 minutes on a low shelf. Check that the vegetables are not colouring too quickly and cook for a further 5-10 minutes. If they are, turn the oven down to as low as possible. You may need to cook the crisps in batches. Remove from the oven and put on cooling racks. In a long motion, peel strips off the carrots and parsnips, turning as you peel. When you get to the cores, stop peeling and discard. Toss the strips in the remaining vegetable oil. Spread out evenly on baking trays, sprinkle with salt and bake for 10 minutes on a low shelf.

‘I love playing
A BAD BOY!’
Hollyoaks star Jamie Lomas on his triumphant return to soapland
A
INTERVIEW: JOHN MARRS PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES
s far as soaps go, bad boys don’t get much worse than Hollyoaks’ Warren Fox. Since his first appearance in 2006, he’s murdered the love of his life Louise Summers, beaten Ste to a pulp, given Jack a heart attack by winning The Dog from Darren in a poker game… and returned from the dead. Now Warren’s just made his shock return to the fictitious Chester village five years after bowing out. In that time, Jamie Lomas, 41, joined the cast of EastEnders for a year, worked in Los Angeles and opened his own acting school. He also has two children – Billy, 10, with ex-girlfriend Haley Lever, and Polly, five, with former wife Kym Marsh. Here, he tells TV Life why he’s gone back to playing his most infamous character and why he’s never been in better shape, physically and emotionally… How’s life back in Hollyoaks? It’s like coming home. A lot of my old friends are here from before and we’re like a family. Plus, by playing Warren, I get to cause trouble around the village again. Why did you want to return? The producers contacted me when I was in Los Angeles making a film. I was planning to set up an acting school in Manchester anyway, called First Take Media Group. So everything just slotted into place. I couldn’t turn it down.
Above: Jamie’s back on Hollyoaks
22 TV LIFE
It doesn’t seem like five years since you left… I know, it’s crazy how time flies when you’re having fun. Since I left I did EastEnders for a while, I went on tour with a play, acted in Stella and loads of other different bits and bobs. Not many actors have switched soaps like you did with Hollyoaks and EastEnders… Yes, it’s quite rare. I’d like to think my EastEnders character, Jake, was quite different to Warren. He was an alcoholic so that was a really challenging role. I spent a lot of time researching it, I went to AA meetings and spoke to alcoholics at length and they really helped me. And I was lucky enough to be involved in one of their biggest storylines, with “who killed Lucy Beale?” My time there was fantastic so it was an honour to be asked to come back to Hollyoaks when I’ve been on another soap. Is it more fun playing troubled Jake or bad-boy Warren? As an actor you take the bull by the horns and roll with it, so I love them both equally. But Warren is a real fun character to play. I don’t think I have much in common with him though – I’m not a murderer for starters!
But I like him, I like to wind people up as I’m a bit of a joker. He’s a stubborn soul, too, but I wouldn’t say he’s much like me. Could you be friends with him in real life? Most guys say they’d like to go for a pint with him because he’s quite a fun character. And a lot of women like a bad boy so they like him, too. So yes, I’d go for a drink with him, but I wouldn’t want to cross him. What do you do away from the screen? Along with spending time with my children, I’m a big boxing fan and a lot of my friends are boxers – some of the best in the country – and I get to train with them. I’ve been training for the last three months to get myself in good shape and there have been massive changes – I have lost 8 per cent body fat so I’m down to only about 10 per cent, plus I’m a lot fitter and a lot healthier. What do you do in your average day? I’m up at 5am, get to the gym for 6am, then I’m at Hollyoaks till 7pm, then I go to teach at my acting school two days a week. Then I go home and learn my lines for the next day. It’s quite full on! Boxing aside, are you a big sports fan? Yes, I love football and I’m a massive Manchester United fan. I’d like to be
good at golf but I’m rubbish. It’s one of those sports I can’t seem to grasp but I still love playing it. You’re also a fan of meditation and chanting… Yes, I did a meditation course in LA and learned how to do it properly. I have a friend who’s into Buddhism and taught me about chanting. I find it helps to ease stress. I used to be a really stressful person who worried about everything, but I’ve learned that it doesn’t get you anywhere and won’t change any outcome. What would friends say about you now compared to the Jamie Lomas of a decade ago? I reckon they’d say I’m more chilled out and a lot more easy-going. As I get older, I learn to deal with things better and I appreciate more what I have. I don’t take anything for granted any more. I do a job I adore and I love teaching and giving something back to my students. When we first saw your Hollyoaks comeback in the shirtless shower scene, it looks like you have a lot of tattoos… Yes, most of them are on my back. Every time I go to a different country, like Thailand, Canada and America, I get a new tattoo. I try and put them on my back so they aren’t seen on screen if they don’t need to be – I can just put a T-shirt on to hide them. But they all mean something to me. How long will you be back in Hollyoaks for? I know I’m here until January and we are talking about going a while over that. I’m been contacted about doing a film, too. But people are excited about Warren’s return so it seems crazy only to be back for a short time. This isn’t just for old fans of the show but for the new ones, too. I want them to see just what Warren is made of!

Main: With beautiful white sandy shores and the clear turquoise sea of Shoal Bay, it’s no wonder Kendall (below) loves Anguilla
Travel
Caribbean dreaming TV Life heads to idyllic Anguilla for sun, sand and star spotting…
T
he sunshine isle of Anguilla used to be a well-kept secret among its fans. A tiny slither of an island set adrift in the eastern Caribbean, where goats outnumber the 14,500 inhabitants, it’s now a firm favourite with the American A-list. And, although Brits may not be as familiar with Anguilla – an island so small it’s home to just six sets of traffic lights – it’s a British Overseas Territory and English is the official language. Surrounded by tiny islets and cays endearingly named Prickly Pear, Sombrero and Seal, we packed our sunnies, swimwear and SPF and discovered that Anguilla boasts some of the world’s best beaches, fab bars and a laid-back vibe which locals call “liming” – otherwise known as the art of relaxing and doing nothing at all…
REPORT: ZOË HILL PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES
WHICH STARS MIGHT I SEE?
Small but perfectly formed, Anguilla has an army of loyal celebrity fans, including Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Liam Neeson – who has dined at Trattoria Tramonto on Shoal Bay West – Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez. Justin Bieber saw in the New Year in Anguilla, jamming on stage with local reggae legend Bankie Banx at his driftwood beach bar, the Dune Preserve. He was also photographed banana boating with his family and hanging out with model Hailey Baldwin. Also on the island over New Year were Harry Styles and Kendall Jenner, who were spotted having a cosy dinner at Blanchards. 24 TV LIFE
WHERE CAN I STAY?
We stayed at two places during our trip, checking in first to Ani Villas, two white cube-shaped villas perched in majestic isolation on a rugged peninsula overlooking Little Bay. The adjoining villas can be rented together or separately and come with their own staff to cater for your every need. The cliff-top terrace in the garden became our favourite place to spot sea turtles in the ocean below and also to watch the spectacular sunsets while sipping a rum punch. The balcony of our suite offered more incredible views of the infinity pool, lush gardens and the sea beyond. There’s a tennis court and mountain bikes for active types, or you can head down to the secluded Little Bay beach at the base of the cliffs. Our second stop was Zemi Beach House Resort & Spa – the only new-build hotel to open on Anguilla for six years and the first to be situated on Shoal Bay East. The boutique beach-front hotel – featuring 54 rooms, nine two and three-bed suites (all have a balcony or terrace) and six restaurants – has a distinctly Asian feel, with
stone-carved reliefs and lanterns. The spa is pretty special too, being housed within a 300-yearold ancient timber teahouse, as well as a yoga deck and the island’s only hammam. After an al fresco breakfast on the terrace, we liked to relax on one of the turquoisecushioned sun loungers before cooling off in the infinity pool that has an underwater window. We were also a fan of the hotel’s Rhum Room, which offers 100 different varieties of rum – we only sampled a few, but that gives us the perfect excuse for a return visit!
WHAT CAN I DO?
The best way to see the island is on a boat trip. From the jetty at Sandy Ground, we set sail aboard Tradition, at 50ft wooden sailing boat, under the capable hands of Tradition Sailings’ owners Laurie and Deb, who are passionate about the island and regaled us with plenty of stories – as well as keeping our glass topped up! On our journey we were fortunate to have several sea turtles for company, before being dazzled by stingrays and a host of colourful fish when we stopped to snorkel at Little Bay. We also tried our hand at paddleboarding, under the patient guidance of one of Anguilla
Watersports’ instructors, who kindly encouraged our amateurish efforts. More confident paddleboarders can enjoy a tour of hidden lagoons along the coastline, but our aim was just to remain (mostly) upright! Elsewhere, learn about the history of the island at the Heritage Museum in the East End, or explore the great outdoors – there are around 20 wetland areas, home to pelicans and flamingos – with Nature Explorers Anguilla. If you’re looking to buy a souvenir from your trip, head to Limin’ Boutique in the West End Village – we loved the pieces of jewellery made with local sand, the spicy jams and preserves from local company Anguilla’s Jammin’ and the stylish bags made from boat sails.
WHERE CAN I EAT?
One of the most memorable places we had lunch was on Sandy Island, just a short boat ride from Sandy Ground. It’s a tiny island, completely deserted apart from one bar serving the most incredible seafood. Place your order (our top tip: go for the lobster), then head for a swim or chill out on a hammock until lunch is served. For lunch with a view, head to Smokey’s At The Cove, located on one of the island’s most beautiful beaches, Cove Bay. Grab a table outside and enjoy a Smokey’s burger with Creole sauce and a refreshing ice-cold Ting – a grapefruit-flavoured fizzy drink, a favourite in the Caribbean. For fab food, don’t miss the charming Straw Hat, with its outstanding location right on Meads Bay. The decor takes its inspiration from the restaurant’s name,

This location of this super hotel allows you to make the most of exploring historic Chester…
Location: Situated close to the motorway network and directly opposite Chester’s train station, this grand hotel could not be better placed or easier to get to if it tried! That said, it’s a five-minute stroll to the shops and bars, meaning you definitely won’t be disturbed from a good night’s sleep by the buzz of the city. We loved the hotel’s quirky lobby with its suitcase-filled reception desk and ornate curling staircase. Bedrooms: Now Chester’s largest hotel, the modern bedrooms (there are 218!) are filled with luxe materials in bold colours, which give a boudoir feel. There are the usual features you’d expect from a four-star hotel, including tea and coffee-making facilities, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Enjoy a break fit for royalty by treating yourself to a stay in an Emperor Suite. Relax in the lounge area, kick back on the four-poster bed or have a soak in the roll-top bath while watching a movie on the state-ofthe-art tile TV! Rates are surprisingly reasonable. more relaxed. Here, you can enjoy a delicious cocktail – you’ll be spoilt for choice by the extensive menu. There are, of course, many restaurants in town – we headed to Barlounge, where you can feast on delights such as buttermilk fried chicken nuggets and tiger prawn lollipops, followed by smoked cod kedgeree with crispy duck egg. Delish! Afterwards, we headed to Red Door, where we were waited on hand and foot by our waiter, Carlo. All eyes were on our private booth when we ordered a speciality cocktail which was served in an actual disco ball containing six foot-long straws and topped with a bottle of Prosecco! Party animals should head to nightclub Cruise. With its six distinctly themed areas, there’s music to suit everyone’s taste. with a central chandelier adorned with straw hats and freshly baked bread served in them, too. We loved the blackened shrimp and lobster tacos to start and the grilled local crayfish with plantain, rounded off with Caribbean lime cheesecake. Sandy Ground is a lovely stretch of white sand with a few low-key beach bars as well as Veya, one of the island’s more stylish restaurants. Highlights from our five-course dinner were the conch fritters and the red snapper with a citrus garlic sauce, washed down with several fruit daiquiris. It’s famous for its live music and we were lucky enough to enjoy a performance from Bankie’s son Omari Banks. We just had to buy one of his CDs to keep the holiday feeling going on our return home!

Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller cook up a storm in this starry culinary drama. He plays Adam Jones, a talented but troubled chef who is desperate to salvage his once-glittering career after a spectacular, drugfuelled meltdown. Adam’s plans to get back in the game and bag three Michelin stars look pretty fanciful. But everybody loves a comeback story and with Emma Thompson’s therapist on hand to talk through his tantrums, anything is possible.
The terminators Geeks of the world rejoice! Because after a 12-year absence, Robot Wars returns to our screens this week. Dara Ó Briain and Angela Scanlon host the new-look show alongside commentary from the legendary Jonathan Pearce, who returns from the original series with his take on the battles.
Filmed in a huge, purpose-built fighting arena, 40 teams of amateur enthusiasts battle it out over six episodes to become the Robot Wars champion 2016. The action kicks off with two group battles, with four robots in each scrap. The top pair from each go through to head-to-head

Cooking up a storm It’s finals week on this year’s Celebrity MasterChef and the four remaining cooks continue to battle for the title. On Thursday, the wannabes’ first challenge is their most daunting yet – John Torode’s palate test. He cooks a highly complex dish, Korean fried chicken with Asian salad, which the celebrities have
to taste, identify the ingredients and try to recreate themselves. Then they must cook two dishes of their own design for four of the country’s most feared restaurant critics. On Friday night, the winner is decided. But first they’ve got to impress some of the best chefs in the country before cooking up a three-course meal for judges John and Gregg Wallace.

Tattoo Fixers On Holiday Tuesday, 9pm, E4 The holy trinity of tattoo artists Sketch, Alice and Jay are back for a new series where they redesign bad artwork and turn it into top-notch designs. And this time, along with receptionist Paisley, they’re off on their summer hols to the Mediterranean to open a pop-up tattoo shop. In the first episode, there are plenty of Brits with hideous tattoos to keep them busy. Look out for the polite girl with the foul bikini-line tattoo, the man with pink panties and another with a tatt of his best friend – a Fiat Punto! TV LIFE 27

For Chrissie, who’s heard the noise and dashed to the scene, the immediate question is how to protect her son. And the answer? Make out it was Andy who pulled the trigger. Elsewhere in the Dales, Carly and Marlon sleep together then feel more than a little awkward the following day.

NEW SERIES
Robot Wars / Dragons’ Den 8pm / 9pm, BBC2 Two old favourites make their return, back-to-back, tonight. After a 12-year absence, Robot Wars is resurrected by popular demand. This time the hosts are comedian Dara O Briain and Angela Scanlon but little else has changed, as teams compete in an arena with their home-made radio-controlled robots with the sole purpose of demolishing each other. To begin with, they have to make it through a group stage, and if they succeed, it’s on to the head-to-head rounds before the heat final. Students from Reading and a family team from Caithness compete tonight – and
look out for the house robots too! Next up are the far from robotic dragons who are back for a six-week run of the show. Evan Davis presents and the fearsome five remains unchanged from last year. Deborah Meaden, Peter Jones, Sarah Willingham, Touker Suleyman and Nick Jenkins sit in judgment and try to work out if the ideas before them are going to make them even richer. In tonight’s episode, concepts vary from the barking mad to the brilliant, including plans for miniature pencils, beanbags and a machine that will clean your football boots. +++++

Ballers / Vice Principals
9pm / 9.35pm, Sky Atlantic Two comedies dominate tonight’s schedules, one that’s returning and one which is new. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is back as Spencer Strasmore as US sports comedy-drama Ballers kicks off its second series. When we last saw the ex-NFL player turned financial adviser, Spencer’s star was on the rise having been promoted to a partner position at his firm and securing a huge contract for his first client. However, his winning streak comes to an end when a TV appearance sees Spencer share airtime with a player he hates, and what starts as a verbal smackdown
soon turns ugly. This naturally lands him in hot water with the boss, but in his game you’re not anybody until you’ve made yourself some enemies – and Spencer isn’t just anybody. Next up is a new comedy set in an American high school that doubles up as a battleground as two vice principals lock horns over control of the halls. Will either man end up on top, or will their feud drag Lincoln High into chaos first? We think we can guess the answer to that one. And look out later in the series for cameos from comedy legends Will Ferrell and Bill Murray. ★★★★I

Long Lost Family
9pm, ITV The weep-fest continues tonight with two stories of folk who have been separated from their mums. The first tale follows mother-of-two Deborah who was born in Adelaide, Australia, but adopted by an English couple in 1966 and raised over here with five brothers and sisters. She knew from an early age she was adopted but under unusual circumstances, because her parents actually knew her birth mother, Joan. She worked for Deborah’s mum and fell pregnant at 17 and even lived with the family throughout her pregnancy. Then when baby Deborah was born, Joan asked them
to take her baby and raise her as their own. But with her adoptive family having lost contact with Joan, Deborah pins her hopes on Davina and Nicky finding her. In the second story, 74-year-old Ray grew up in care, knowing nothing of his own background. Then in 1988 he learned his mother was a woman called Myra and he had a half-brother called Arthur. And in his file, he found a letter from his mum hoping that one day they’d be reunited – however Ray had never seen the letter before. But while his mum died in 1975, the team discovers Arthur is alive and well. ★★★★I

Celebrity MasterChef
8pm, BBC1 There’s a certain hall of fame with a vacancy at the moment. Matt Dawson, Nadia Sawalha, Liz McClarnon, Jayne Middlemiss, Lisa Faulkner, Phil Vickery, Emma Kennedy, Ade Edmondson, Sophie Thompson and Kimberly Wyatt all have places there, so who’s going to join them in tomorrow night’s Celebrity MasterChef grand final? Well, before we reach that point, we’ve got tonight to get through. First off, the remaining handful who have survived the last six weeks have to face John’s palate test. He rustles up a complicated dish which the celebrities have to taste, and then
using their palates and their memories, they have to guess the ingredients and recreate it. Next up, there’s two more dishes of their own to come up with that will be eaten by four of Britain’s harshest food critics. At the end of the programme, four become three as the talented trio prepare to compete in the last episode of this series. On Friday night, their penultimate challenge is one of the hardest they’ve had to face so far – they’ve got to impress four top chefs with their grub before the winner is announced. ★★★★★

The Fall: Decker vs Budd
9pm, Sky Atlantic Anyone with a memory of sporting achievements will probably remember the Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984. This Sky Atlantic documentary tells the story of when Zola Budd, a South African barefoot runner, faced off against the American track and field star Mary Decker. And in doing so, between them, they created one of the most memorable and controversial moments in sporting history. This fascinating film charts the participants’ very different journeys – Budd, who was born and raised in rural South Africa during apartheid and Decker, who came from the safe
haven and privileged world of Southern California – to the starting line of the women’s 3,000 metres. But what you probably don’t know is the story that lies beneath the surface. This one-off uncovers a tale of betrayal and exploitation, the blurred lines between politics, media and sport and the dedication and sacrifice that is needed to compete at such a high level. But governments and divided nations aside, most importantly, it’s an uplifting story of two young women who just wanted to run for their countries and win gold. ★★★★I

The Saturday Show Live
9am, Channel 5 The teaming of Gabby Roslin and Matt Barbet over the last few months has been a winner in our books. And their pairing has made this a far better magazine programme than its Channel 4 and BBC1 rivals. Alas Matt’s departed to concentrate on presenting the news, so they’ve roped in someone new, and it helps that his name is also Matt! Presenter, journalist and consumer champion Matt Allwright has taken his place and, after bedding down for the best part of a month, he has slotted in so well it’s like he’s always been there. In this morning’s episode, the duo once
again take a trip to banterville as they have a chinwag with celebrity guests. Joining Matt and Gabby live in the studio will be regular film and TV critic Joe Michalczuk with his pick of the week’s best releases. Plus, there’s also king of the pop-up restaurant, Jimmy Garcia, with food to impress your pals. And with the Rio Olympics coming up very soon, you might want to take notes. Gabby and Matt will also be checking out the week’s top viral videos and talking to people who have made the headlines in the last seven days. ★★★★I
