BC_Holiday2009_virtual.indd 8

If there were a common denominator between our two cover models, it would be: low-maintenance. It might be because of their humble beginnings in the industry, making it hard to imagine that someone who looks like Camila Alves was once cleaning houses for a living, or probably because James Tupper worked as a carpenter in between jobs. Whatever it was that made them the people we met during the photo shoot, then maybe more divas and whiners out there should go through it. I’m not saying that it’s not fun to watch a prima donna in action. In fact, they make for the most memorable stories (as long as no one gets physically injured). But when you are the one running around trying to make sure someone else is extremely comfortable so you get the shot or the vibe you want, being around relaxed people is a treat. Camila and James are paradigms of today’s family, where couples are able to make their relationships work without necessarily tying the knot. A single mom raised me, so I get how this arrangement can succeed. Many times I would wonder how my life would’ve changed if my parents just stayed together, even though they didn’t get married. I just wanted them to have tried, and as a kid, you don’t exactly ask your folks whether or not they are bound together in Holy Matrimony. In fact, my husband and I have yet to set a date for our church wedding. However, where my daughters are concerned is a different story. I wish for them to experience a fairy tale life, no villains in the story if possible, following my dream of birth–toddler–kid–tween–teenager–adult finding her way through life–getting married–living happily ever after–dying in their sleep peacefully at 135 years old (outliving me and their dad) pattern. BUT if it means a choice between a life full of affection, care, attention, and loyalty from an equal half and they don’t want to sign a document to seal the deal—then I will be behind them every step of the way, taking care of their babies anytime they want (hear that, girls? Mama’s got your back). I just want my children to

have the best existence possible, and every prayer I say comes down to that. In line with living fully, we were fortunate to hear from several of the best athletes who will proudly represent the U.S. this coming Olympics. Even if they are already winners in their sport, they sound to me like champions in their family lives as well. Another fun feature is Kendra Wilkinson’s—a former Playboy Bunny who’s expecting her first child, the blonde bombshell shows us her personal side. She could’ve easily ‘upped’ her game and released an adult video, but Kendra chose the road less traveled among sexy starlets at the prime in their profession: motherhood. We mark the holidays in our calendar with this issue. I am a sucker for this season—enamored with the cold air, the reruns on TV, the gift-giving, and even the added weight from all the food is welcome (not really, but it’s what I tell myself). I get extra chipper and hear this little song in my head that goes, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…” I wish it were something that I knew more lyrics to, though. If you haven’t made up your mind, or you’re a crammer like yours truly, we compiled a gift guide that hopefully pleases both the recessionistas and stylistas in you. Times are still tough, but remember that if you’re a little short on cash now, there’s always more love in you to give. Maybe visit your local foundations, give some change or food to a homeless person on the street, help your kids learn to read faster, talk to them about their friends, cook a meal for your spouse, drive with the kiddos to a surprise destination, and the list goes on. Charity begins at home, and at the end of it all, our families will not measure us by how much presents they’ve gotten throughout the years, but for the devotion and love we have endowed. And that, I believe, is eternally the reason for the season.

PREgnAnCY CLOSE-uP I actually did! I’ve had on my MySpace for years that I wanted to get married and have kids at 24 years old, and here I am. The stars lined up, and I have the perfect husband who will be the perfect father. If you keep something you want in your heart and mind, it’s amazing what can happen. I got all the craziness out of my system, and now I’m ready to have fun in a whole new different way. What’s the sweetest thing your husband did for you during your pregnancy?

bc-mag.com

“i have the perfect husband who will be the perfect father. if you keep something you want in your heart and mind, it’s amazing what can happen. i got all the craziness out of my system, and now i’m ready to have fun in a whole new different way.”

In a nutshell: what was it like transitioning from Hugh Hefner’s girlfriend, to marrying football star, Hank Baskett—and expect your first child together?

It’s been a crazy but very great year. I never thought I would get married and have a baby the same year I moved out of the Mansion, but it’s something I’ve always wanted. I always wanted to be a young mom and a wife, and I’m so happy I found the best man in the world for me. I have a great support system so that always helps. I’ve been moving for over a year straight now, so it’s been a little crazy. This is what I always wanted, I just never thought it would all be in one year. Did you think your life would take this course?

It’s the little things that amaze me. Everyday is something new with Hank. He always knows what to say and do to make me feel special. He’s always 10 steps ahead of me making sure I’m okay. If we go grocery shopping he drops me off at the front so I don’t have to walk. He always opens the door for me. When he’s at practice he always calls to check in on me and make sure I’m okay. He also rubs lotion on my belly and makes sure I’m comfortable, which is sweet. He makes sure I never have to go without. He’s my better half. Hank just moved to another team, and you’re supposed to relocate. How are you dealing with all these changes?

Well, we just moved into another new house. It is what it is, so I want to save my stress for things I can control. The hardest part was when he found out what team he was going to and that he had to go right away, so I was alone in Philly for a little, which was scary. But as long as I’m with Hank, I don’t care where I am. You’re due on Christmas! Do you have plans on how you will be spending the holidays with the arrival of your son?

Well, there will be three stockings now! We actually just bought a little Santa onesie. It’s perfect timing! This is really bringing a lot of the family together this year. We have a little gift coming this year that seems like a gift for everyone. We were actually just talking about how every year we want to get a new ornament for our son. We also thought it would be cute to have a train in the living room. We just have to figure out the whole birthday vs. Christmas present thing! Is it true that Hugh Hefner will be the baby’s godfather?

Hef is not going to be the godfather but he is a close friend of the family, so he will definitely be involved in my son’s life. We read that you came up with a playlist for your honeymoon. Have you made a playlist for the baby?

we found out what Kendra’s been up to on her blog, KendrawilKinson.celebuZZ.coM: Kendra’s husband has always wanted to fix up his old chrysler 300, so Kendra went to XtreMe auto interiors in roslyn, pa, and had it done for him as a birthday present

as a surprise, hank gave her a snuggies blankie (the blanket with sleeves). Kendra writes, “i can’t wait to wear my snuggie when the baby comes, so we’re both warm!” getsnuggie.com

We don’t have a playlist set yet but there are so many songs that remind us of my pregnancy, and our son. Certain songs that played at different times throughout the pregnancy remind us of different stages. The song “(You’re) Having My Baby” by Paul Anka is the cheesiest song ever, but it makes us laugh every time! What’s been the sweetest and hardest part about being pregnant?

I get to be lazy, lounge around in sweats, and eat whatever I want—without feeling guilty! The most challenging thing so far has been the back pain. Any unusual food cravings?

My number one craving is waffles with peanut butter, bananas and syrup. I also eat a lot of cereal and that white cheddar popcorn. Another funny thing is that I never ate pickles before I was pregnant, and now I’m addicted to them! What are your favorite maternity outfits?

A Pea in the Pod has amazing clothes that fit me through every stage of my pregnancy. Target is also good. I have these sweatpants from there that are amazing. What baby items did you enjoy shopping for the most?

We definitely enjoyed the clothes shopping! Clothes are so fun because you feel like you can actually see him in the clothes. With some of the clothes we said, “No, that doesn’t look like him,” like we know him already! We love the Bellini cribs too.

The first moment he’s in my arms, when I get to hold him and look at him. When I finally get to meet him. What career would you want your boy to have?

Whatever he wants to be. Hank is an athlete but we don’t want our son to feel like he has to be one as well. We will stand behind him no matter what he wants to do. What are three life lessons you will teach your son early?

Sharing, respect, and to always be himself. What mommy duty are you most nervous about?

Who do you look up to when it comes to parenting?

Of course, my mom, and my friend, Tiffany Fallon. She was 2006 Playmate of the Year. She is an amazing role model and an overall great person and mother. After giving birth, is there something that you will miss or not miss about being pregnant?

I’ll miss the one-on-one bonding moments with our son, like feeling him move and kick. I feel selfish right now because I have him all to myself, but I’ll really enjoy the time we’ll share together.

zaCh lUnd This American Skeleton racer has sledded his way to the Olympics—and has simultaneously mastered being a parent Two musts if you want to nurture a future Olympian: the right kind of environment, and people who believe in you. Take Zach Lund, an American Skeleton racer who won the 2007 World Cup Championship. “I grew up at a ski resort called Alta,” he explains how he got into the world of sports. “My dad was the deputy sheriff, and my mom owned and ran the first children’s center/daycare at the

resort. So I grew up on skis. I always wanted to be an Olympian since I was very young, and my parents were very supportive.” He feels blessed that he is surrounded by so many supportive people who have helped him be who he is today, especially his dad, whom he absolutely looks up to. According to Zach, “I respect that he has dedicated his life to civil service. He is a firefighter, but has been on search and rescue teams of all sorts, including FEMA, and has risked his own life for others and never expected anything in return.” A father himself, Zach admits that mixing family and career used to be challenging. “The only year in the past eight years I did

Chad hedriCK An inline and ice speed skating champion for quite a while now, Chad just recently entered a new rink: parenthood There’s no doubt why Chad Hedrick is an American champ who boasts of 3 Olympic medals in 2006 alone, and several World Cup wins—his parents owned a roller skating rink in Spring (outside of Houston), and at 2 years old, he was already skating circles around kids three times his age. In the 80’s, he moved on to inline skates, and eventually jumped on ice with the desire to win an Olympic gold medal someday. Chad, who considers visiting over 32 countries as the most fun part about his sport, has countless career highlights, such as coming up with a unique technique in skating, known as “the double-push” or “the Chad,” which is now the standard for the best skaters. He is also currently enjoying another highlight in his life—becoming a dad to Hadley Angel, who was born last March, and according to him, likes to snort. “She squishes her eyes and nose together, and breathes in and out of her

not make the World Cup team was the first year I was a parent,” he shares. “It was much harder than I could have ever expected.” He also shares how daughter Alyssa often thinks that she is a cat or a dog. “She will bark or meow rather than talking, for hours. She will even crawl around on all fours. It’s hilarious.” Zach wishes for his daughter to be persistent and to realize that anything is possible. “Life has knocked me down many times,” he states. “But I have always [gotten] back up and kept going. ‘Always follow your dreams.’ It was these amazing words that my mom passed on to me shortly before she passed away from cancer, and I have lived by them ever since—and hope that Alyssa will too.”

nose really fast,” the smitten dad says. “And it’s pretty cute.” Chad looks up to golfer Tiger Woods as a sportsman and a family man. “He is a fierce competitor and is able to focus on the task at hand without giving in to distractions,” Chad describes his idol. “I also can appreciate the fact that he is very serious about his sport, but even more serious about his family. Tiger and I have that in common.” He adds that, “I have an extremely busy schedule training and racing—but when the races are over and there’s a break from training, I’m changing dirty diapers and preparing bottles,” Chad shares, proving how serious he is as a family man. While his daughter is barely a year old, Chad has already entertained the idea of his little one following in his footsteps. “There is an ongoing joke in my house that my kids are not going to skate!” he shares. “Neither my wife nor myself has any desire to spend any more time in a freezing cold city or ice rink!” On the flipside, he wants his children to have a drive for whatever it is they are passionate about, to not give up on their dreams, and to trust them with many decisions. “I really hope my children notice the sacrifice I put into my sport and also the desire to be the very best,” the Olympian says. “If you choose to do something in your life, you should commit to it fully and wholeheartedly.”

daron rahlves Known as the most successful male downhiller in the U.S., it looks as if Daron’s got his eyes on being the most extraordinary family man as well With 7 U.S. National titles, 15 U.S. National Podiums, 28 World Cup Podiums, 12 World Cup wins, and 3 World Championship medals, it’s not hard to assume how easy skiing is for this Olympian, who, when it comes to the sport, looks up to anyone who takes chances and puts it all on the line in a professional manner. So what does he find difficult? Balancing having a family and an extremely busy schedule. “My wife and two kids are number one and most of the time it revolves around them,” he says. “My training, sponsor commitments and competitions are limited.” But with determination, persistence, and perseverance—three virtues he wants to pass on to his children—it looks like he is doing a good job as a father to his twins, Dreyson and Miley, who he hopes to be healthy, strong-minded, strongwilled, hardworking, environmentally-

conscious, and adventurous people who will treat others with respect and have lots of fun in this life. “I love them more than anything and want the best for them,” Daron states. This champion skier got into the sport after he and his sister tagged along with their parents and grandparents to ski. When it comes to his own kids, he’s not really imposing the sport. “I have an amazing life as a skier so I wouldn’t mind if they gave it a shot, but it’s up to them,” he explains. And whatever their dream is, here is what Daron wants to teach his twins about winning and losing: “To win is great, but giving all you have and knowing you did your very best is greater. Be a proud and humble winner. Congratulate those who put on a great performance.”

Returning to competing in Nordic combined, Todd proves that even retirement can’t stop you if you’re really good at what you do

Having been raised in Ski Town, USA gave Todd Lodwick the opportunity to participate in winter sports. At 15, Nordic combined became his focus. In the early 90’s, he started a successful international career and then eventually retired. After being gone for two years, he sprung back into the scene this year—becoming a two-time World Champion. Up next is the Olympics.

Finding the sport both fun and challenging at the same time, Todd says that, “The combination of putting two different sports

know how to take calculated risks. The two never fail to crack him up. “Charley likes to have performances at home, which typically involves stunts and acrobatics off my arms and feet. Finn loves to feel the beat of the music and shrug his shoulders,” the proud papa relates. As he has learned the virtue of setting goals and working hard to achieve them, Todd would also like to impart to his kids about triumphs and its opposite: “Some of my greatest lessons have come from my defeats and reevaluating my goals, and then getting back there. As they say, it is not the destination, it is the journey!”

JennY Potter

It wasn’t so long ago when Jenny Potter just lived a couple of blocks away from an outdoor rink, walking there with her family almost everyday during winter. Now, she is a three-time Olympian gearing up for gold at 2010’s Vancouver games, and is also mom to two children (2-year old Cullen, whose antics include wearing his underwear and pretending he’s Optimus Prime from Transformers, and an 8-year old daughter, who loves make-up, plays tackle football, and is already a state-champ in swimming). Jenny, who idolizes her father, Sidney Crosby, and Wayne Gretzky, has learned all about hardwork and dedication—two things she wants her kids to imbibe. And when it comes to winning and losing, she teaches them that, “They might fall short today but they always have tomorrow, and hard work goes a long way. They have to enjoy what they do, and work hard at it.” She adds that in life and sports, they should also learn “to be both a gracious winner, and a gracious loser.”

The Charlie was built in 1924 by the Gordon family, and as the stories go, movie great Charlie Chaplin would escape to this oasis and write his movies. It was reportedly constructed in stages, over the years of 1925 to 1946. Menachem Treivush made a re-discovery in 2002: down Sweetzer Avenue was this unique and mysterious piece of property boasting of historical value, and great promise. But while it was sadly worn down by time and was on the verge of destruction (it was actually scheduled to be replaced by new development), Treivush set on purchasing it to revive it back to the architectural gem that it was. More importantly, he had the desire to remind everyone of the property’s colorful past. “I wanted to restore the memories of Hollywood legends who stayed there,” he explains. “The creative imprint they had on us needed to be preserved for decades to come.” And so he

bought the property, and after a multi-million restoration that lasted for four and a half years, the garden-enclosed hideaway finally got its glamour and spirit back. Although a certified hot spot, it is also a big hit with families, especially among children, who love the gardens and the calm, lush atmosphere. A couple that lived in the Charlie bungalow ended up naming their baby “Charlie.” The hideaway brings you back to the past—to the glamorous cinematic golden age, to be exact. It has 14 bungalows: 11 for bed and breakfast use, three for longer-term stays—each one built with meticulous attention to detail, and with a rich history embedded in its walls. The lodges are named after famed visitors who once stayed there, such as

Inside, there are modern amenities like washers/dryers, stainless steel appliances, spacious showers, luxurious linens, original ironwork, and contemporary furniture mixed with Old Hollywood glamour. They are to represent, as closely as they can, the way they were made in the 20’s. Nature is also at its best with verdant gardens that one can stroll amidst fruit trees and vines on a starry night, and feel the time stand still, the city seemingly so far away. On top of these, the service is more than impressive. The owner and staff are courteous, reliable, and helpful. A personal attendant, weekly fresh flowers, optional pet sitting and car wash, makes you just want to live there. When asked about his favorite memories of his hotel, Treivush states that, “It would be the joy and gratitude of each person who stays with us,” he shares. “Their appreciation for the beauty, and their time spent here, really warms my heart.” As for its modern celebrity fan base, “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson is reportedly a recent visitor, joining other A-Listers who choose this venue as their home away from home. Wikipedia states that, “Agnès Deréon, later Agnès Beyincé (1924 – 1984) was a French Créole Louisiana native whose surname and passion for creating beauty from the mundane, is the inspiration for the clothing line, “House of Deréon.” Is this accurate?

My mother was such an inspiration for me. She taught me about garment construction and about style in general. Beyoncé and I wanted to honor her by using her name for our fashion company. She was a true talent and taught me so much about fashion. Did you always know that you would have your own clothing line?

I have always been passionate about making people feel better about the way they look. From the beginning when I had a beauty salon in Houston, to when I was styling Destiny’s Child for their videos and performances, creating fashion looks and styling people has always brought me tremendous joy. Having the fashion company allows me this creativity and it gives Beyoncé, Solange, and I the opportunity to work together.

Who or what inspires you when you design clothes?

I am so fortunate in that my career allows me to travel to some of the world’s most exciting cities—the beautiful architecture, exotic locations, and even the local residents of a far and away city can provide inspiration when I design. My family… daughters, Beyoncé, Solange, and Kelly Rowland, and the rest of my extended family are also huge inspirations for me. I am always inspired and challenged by today’s consumer; a woman who is busy multi-tasking and wants to look her best, regardless of her size, and wants great fashion at a value. What is the most challenging part about designing?

Trying to push the envelope as far as possible, because I love seeing our customers taking risks, but at times, not knowing how far to go. We also want to design clothes that make every body type and every age group look their absolute best, and at a price point that is budgetfriendly–especially in this economy! What type of woman wears Dereon?

How have your three labels (House of Deréon, Deréon, and Miss Tina collection) grown and changed after all these years?

Well, the House of Deréon launched as a brand of contemporary dresses that could work for most occasions, but definitely swayed toward the evening category. Now, the collection is launching its first line of day wear. We have day dresses, jumpsuits, beautiful blazers, and cropped jackets. As for our junior brand, Deréon, it just keeps growing! We launched it as a sportswear collection that consisted of denim, dresses, and casual sportswear, and now we include handbags, shoes, eyewear, jewelry, hats, and lingerie. And Miss Tina, the women’s collection for HSN, features a complete collection of sportswear, dresses, handbags, shoes, jewelry and accessories.

The type of woman wearing Deréon is confident, independent, and has a bit of an edge and appreciates fashion. She has a youthful energy and is usually the center of attention—whether she is trying to be or not. What’s your dream for all three lines?

To simply continue growing into complete lifestyle collections that extend into home furnishings. We just expanded Deréon internationally for the first time in Korea and Greece, which is a major step in our overall strategy for the brand to be a global lifestyle resource for women everywhere. You must be extremely proud of your daughters because they are successful, talented, yet appear so down-to-earth. How did you do it?

I think you’ll need to ask them, I just

raised them as best I could. The spiritual connection that exists in our family, along with their inner strength and character, has always been their guiding light. What types of clothes did you like dressing up Beyoncé and Solange in when they were little girls?

They were, and still are, so sweet, caring and adorable! We always just dressed them in clothes that were appropriate, and chose clothing that allowed them to express their own individual style. Have any of your daughters tried to style you?

Well, we are always bouncing ideas back and forth and, believe me, styling with these

Anything that gets thrown my way, I try my best to learn from it, and it usually ends up making me a stronger person. If Beyoncé is “Sasha Fierce,” what would your alias be?

I would have to say that there is a little bit of Sasha Fierce in me too! Is Deréon Girls a small sized version of the House of Deréon, or do you design a completely different collection for it?

Honestly, it is little bit of both. The essence of the girl’s line does reflect some of the trends in the women’s line, but of course we make it appropriate for the younger ages. For example, we may use a similar pocket treatment for the jeans of both lines.

“i iMagine My children in every piece we design! they are My biggest inspiration...” girls is always a family affair. We really do all love to put our “two cents” into whatever one of us is wearing. How involved are your children in the business?

Beyoncé is my partner and co-creative director, so she is involved in the collection and how it evolves. And because my daughters’ careers allow them to see and wear some of the best fashion from all over the world, they are always giving me ideas and incorporating their point of view into my design aesthetic. That’s what makes the collection so appealing to such a broad demographic of women. You seem to have the “Midas Touch.” What is the secret to your triumph in practically every project?

Well thank you for that…I guess I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to fashion, mix that with a little bit of luck and a lot of prayer, and there you have it. (Smiles) And how do you handle mistakes and failures that come your way?

www.bc-mag.com

BC_Holiday2009_virtual.indd 31

However, since the girl’s line encompasses three collections, infant -2T, 4-6X, and 7-16, we design looks that are specific and appropriate to the girls’ ages as well. Who is the inspiration for designing the girl’s line, and what’s next for it?

We want to create clothing that is on trend. At the same time, I am a mother myself and I know how fast children grow and how hard they can be on their clothing. So it is very important to me to make sure every garment is made well with the highest quality and the best price. We hope to watch it grow just as much as we’ve watched our other collections grow. I definitely think that footwear will be one of the next categories in expanding the kid’s line. Would you have dressed your daughters in Deréon Kids?

Of course! I imagine my children in every piece we design! They are my biggest inspiration, even when it comes to children’s clothing. bc Visit dereon.com for more information

DEsIgnER SPECIAL Our motto is, “Play Golf, Be Good!” I like the idea of “be good” because it refers to the company’s eco-friendly and community-friendly mission, but it also sounds like we’re speaking to the rambunctious little boys who wear the collection—rough and tumble, down and dirty, curious and adventurous, loving, and fun-loving. While our clothes look crisp and clean, they’re really meant to get dirty! The bamboo fabric really had a great hand-feel and drape to it and was a fitting choice for these sporty, modern designs.

We heard that you’re a golf addict apart from being a designer. How did you get into the fashion industry to begin with?

driver caps. When he wears a Fore!! T- shirt and flaunts it around, I know it’s a keeper.

Upon immigrating to the U.S. from Vietnam in 1975, drawing and sketching were my hobbies as a young boy. Growing up in a traditional Asian family, becoming a doctor or lawyer was encouraged by my parents. Instead of pursuing either one, I followed my passion for the arts and fashion and studied Fashion Design at Otis Art Institute.

Do you have to play a round of golf to be in the mood to design? What’s your process?

What made you think about a golf-inspired boy’s line, aside from loving the sport?

As the sport garnered popularity with younger players, I felt the market for boys was lacking classic, traditional, yet hip pieces. Golf has such a rich history and a great sense of style. I wanted to update the classic and traditional golf pieces with a hip twist to fill that void.

I need to try that method next time. Originally, I wanted to be a women’s contemporary designer. I used to design and sew beautiful gowns for my then-girlfriend, now-wife, Holly. How I ended up doing childrenswear is still a mystery. I guess I still carry that design sensibility and close attention to detail throughout the collection. I love looking at old golf magazine clippings, and any vintage clothing for inspiration.

with driver caps are all standalone pieces in the line, and they complete the collection and outfits. Even parents are requesting our hats in their sizes! What’s the idea behind your first collection coming this Spring?

You’ve been in the industry for over 14 years, designing children’s clothes for other brands in the past. How does it feel now that you have your own?

To put a hip spin on golf’s signature style, for cool swagger on and off the course. Think country club meets California cool. Price range?

Sleep? That’s a nice concept.

It’s the one thing I knew I would eventually want to do. Envisioning this in my head and now seeing it a reality is amazing. It’s very rewarding to be able to create these great-looking clothes out of mostly environmentally-friendly fabrics. We’re also inspired to give back to the community– specifically children–and are in the process of partnering with charitable organizations to make that happen very soon.

Does your son, Hudson, already voice out his opinions on the designs?

We noticed that you have a lot of hats in your collections.

Although Hudson is only two, he definitely has his favorites. He loves to come into the office and don the newest fedora hat or

We were very conscious about pricing without sacrificing quality and design. Our Spring 2010 Collection retails from $20$40. What’s been the greatest challenge you’ve ever faced as a designer?

I think just being on the pulse of fashion without being too trendy. If I’m able to put my influence and handprint on the designs, and the collection is strong, then I’m happy. bc Visit foreaxelandhudson.com, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Kitson, Fred Segal, and specialty boutiques in January

You are successful for the bashes that you throw for celebrity families. Why go into designing?

I have actually dreamed of designing a line for little girls for over 10 years, and I would always start it and then push it aside. Once my daughter was born, I began thinking about it again. I wanted pieces for her that were classic, but still had fun, fashion-forward elements. After struggling to find the clothes I wanted for my baby, I decided that since I had the perfect muse it was time to dedicate myself to a dream that I have had for so long—and here we are. How did you become a stylist for actresses such as Halle Berry and Courteney CoxArquette?

I worked as a fashion stylist for over 10 years, and during that time I was very lucky to be called on by magazine editors and producers to dress some of the biggest movie stars in the world. I have not only had the chance to dress Halle Berry, I also worked with her through her service with the Jenesse Center in L.A. It was such an inspiration for me to be able to stand beside someone as respected as she is and fight for the same cause—to end domestic violence. Describe your first collection. They have already been spotted on Nahla Aubry and Honor Warren.

To have some of the celebrities I had the honor of dressing choose my line for their little girls is such an honor! This collection was inspired by my two loves: my 1-year old daughter and New York City. We have been spending a lot of time in California lately, so I have been dreaming about our trip back home to New York for the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center and walking with her down Madison Ave., looking at the Christmas lights. My fall collection is called “Sophie’s Holiday in New York.” The color base was navy blue, grey, and a few stripe patterns, all colors that are very strong and represent the east coast. It’s available at specialty boutiques nationwide, and on jayneonimoore.com. How’s it like being a single mom running a business?

It can be a challenge sometimes, but I wouldn’t trade this time in our lives for anything in the

mOrE ON mOOrE After working backstage at the New York Fashion Week with big designers like Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, and Lloyd Klein, Jayneoni Moore moved on to become a top fashion stylist, dressing up Hollywood stars such as Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, and Courteney Cox-Arquette. She also launched the Jayneoni Moore Children’s Fund in 2001, dedicated to improving the lives of foster, and at-risk, children. But when you ask the charismatic and talented hyphenate about what she does, she’ll tell you this first: “I am Sophie’s mommy!” in reference to her adorable and sweet daughter, aptly-named Sophie Plum, who is the chief inspiration for her line.

world. We have favorite places we go to, little inside jokes and funny faces that no one understands, and we rely on each other for everything! Tell us more about the Jayneoni Moore Children’s Fund.

I started it back in 2001 as a vehicle to help impoverished children in Maryland, where I grew up, and I have been so blessed to be able to help kids all over the country. We have paired with First Book and have worked with the Foster Care system in both New York and California, providing school supplies and book bags for thousands of foster kids. What are the easiest and challenging roles you play?

most

I constantly challenge myself with the work I do through my foundation. Every project we take on, I ask myself, “Is this going to change a life? Is this going to challenge

me to grow with my community service?” The easiest part of my life is being a TV personality, because I get to be the ultimate girl. I get up, have my hair and make-up done, put on a fierce outfit and sit on TV and gab about my fashion loves—what girl wouldn’t love that? How do you juggle everything?

I begin each day with prayer and try to live one day at a time. I am a mother first and foremost. I love what I do, so the extra long hours don’t sting as bad. I work from home so that I am home with her, and I love when I am having a hard day or stressful day because no matter what, at 1 pm, everything stops for Sophie’s lunch— nothing else matters to me than feeding my baby girl her lunch, and I love that! It is also very important to me that my daughter sees how dedicated I am to my career, because I want her to grow up to be a hard worker and reach for her dreams. bc

Every December, Walt Disney World transforms into a magical wonderland. Over two hundred thousand twinkling white lights decorate Sleeping Beauty’s iconic castle; Christmas parties are held throughout the parks, Epcot celebrates holidays from cultures around the world; and themed parades and music-accompanied fireworks entertain crowds daily. One of the most magical times to visit, it’s also one of the busiest. Consider visiting December 18 to 23. You’ll still be able to see the holiday decorations and utilize the holiday vacation weeks, but the price for Disney accommodations and five-day park tickets for a family of four starts at only $1,800 as opposed to the almost $2,000 you’d pay visiting December 23 through 28th. The crowds are considerably smaller and you’re less likely to need the park hopper ticket, saving you an additional $200. When navigating the parks, get in early, do your must-sees, and then get out. The parks

open early for resort guests during the holidays almost every day. See your favorite attractions, including the shows that can absorb high crowds (such as Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor), later in the morning when the crowds are thicker, then try to get out by lunch. and come back. The only exceptions to this are Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day when the park may reach capacity and close. Avoid the extra magic late hours. Too many resort guests utilize this time, meaning that the park is packed. Use the extra magic morning hours, as people tend to have a harder time waking the family up and reaching the park early. Also, visit the park that had extra magic late hours the following morning. Since so many people were there late the previous night, the park’s traffic will be lighter in the morning. Make dining reservations early. There are hundreds of dining options available throughout the parks, ranging from snacks and counter services (which can be chaotic), to character meals and shows. There are hidden-away, less crowded spots, but the best way to grab some peace of mind is a nice, sit-down meal. Since popular restaurants fill up quickly, waiting too long to book may leave you with only very early or very late seatings available—or none at all. Take in the holiday magic. Each resort is beautifully decorated in its own style. This alone can be very entertaining. There are special Christmas parades at the parks, fireworks matched to holiday songs, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Hollywood Studios, Holidays Around the World in Epcot, and the Candlelight Processional in Epcot. Be realistic. You will not be able to fit everything in, and trying would make your trip miserable. If you pick and choose wisely, you will enjoy the magic of the holidays, any destination you find yourselves in.

A stroll down memory lane to tell you about our best Holiday memories

two christmases

T

hey began with a traditional Polish dinner on Christmas Eve, and then we opened the presents from my grandmom, Doppie, and my aunt Betty. After that, Santa landed on my roof while I was sleeping, he would unload presents on my household and spoil my sister, Becky, and I. Christmas morning we would tiptoe through the room, until we reached our presents and begin tearing away the wrapping paper. My mom, Patricia, and my stepdad, Tom, would sit on the sofa sipping coffee. Finally, I’d find my matchbox cars and a costume to dress up as. I liked to create my own world of imagination and exploration. Here is my car collection, in a stand still in traffic, much like my mornings on the 405. I am wearing my police officer’s uniform fully equipped with a walkie and a gun. Beware, troublemakers. After opening up all our gifts, we’d get in the car and travel to my father, Steve’s house, and do it all over again. Stephen Seidel, Features Editor

Saving Christmas I was 4, and it’s the first Christmas I recall as a child. I was overjoyed when my mother agreed to let me help decorate the Christmas tree, and what a treat it was to handle those colorful ornaments and string popcorn garlands around the foot, as my hands could only reach so high. Once the final bulb was hung, my mother flipped the switch and the dance of light and tinsel was so awesome, so magnetic that I literally threw my arms as wide as I could around our Christmas tree only to have it come tumbling down on top of me. The holiday music serenading us in the background was replaced with sighs of shock and concern. Luckily, I was okay, and so was our tree, with the exception of a few of the more fragile ornaments. I felt ashamed and thought I had ruined any chance of Santa Claus stopping by our house since I was certainly not “nice.” To my delight, I was wrong. Our Christmas tree was resurrected and Santa brought several wonderful presents that year— most of them with me in mind. It was a great feeling to come to an early understanding that everyone makes mistakes, and if you’re lucky, you are forgiven by those who love and understand you the most. Gift of Giving Perspective is one of the most interesting gifts you can receive on the holidays. My favorite holiday moment growing up has to be the year that I finally understood what people meant when they would say “it is better to give than to receive.” How could a person enjoy giving someone a gift more than they would enjoy receiving an Alf alarm clock? It’s just madness! Well, on December 25, 1996, I realized what they meant. I had made some money that year working my first job and actually went out and bought presents for people. This was my year to shine, and a red dress from H&M made that dream of ‘shining’ a reality. When my cousin, Renee, opened the box, her face dropped. She held up the dress and couldn’t believe her eyes. I couldn’t believe my thought process. I had forgotten about the gifts I still had to open, or what new Sega game would be in my stocking. I was too excited by her excitement to care about anything else around me. She came over and held me in her arms. At that moment I realized that if I never receive another present again it wouldn’t matter, because the real gift is the ability to make your loved ones happy. Neil Garguilo, Features Editor

Eye Candy When I was about 4 years old, I was finally old enough to help my mom decorate our Christmas tree. I was so excited to help, and she gave me the very important responsibility of hanging all the plastic, red and white candy canes. My mom put on the lights and most of the ornaments, and I carefully placed every single candy cane we had. When I was done, my mom hugged me and said I had done the most beautiful job. Now, more than 20 years later, my mom still remembers that Christmas too. She said I could only reach about a foot high on the tree, and I put every candy cane in one big cluster, right in the front! Instead of moving my decorations to spread them around, my mom thought it was the cutest thing, and left every one of them right where I’d put it! Amy Highfill, Associate Fashion Editor
