will surely have a grand time doing run-throughs and brainstorming about the coming issues.

Family Ties “People ask me, “What about gay adoptions? Interracial? Single Parent?” I say, “Hey fine, as long as it works for the child and the family is responsible.” My big stand is this: Every child deserves a home and love. Period.”

Sabina and I with Josie and her kids (taken after we wrapped up the day)

fter a fantastic summer filled with camp activities for my eldest daughter (including a field trip to the aquarium, farm animals and reptiles visiting the school, and a cooking session with Wolfgang Puck), I am excited for sweater weather. We are starting Pre-K, and as I mentioned in my previous note, we have luckily found ourselves a school that suits our needs, and thank God, because it feels like an extended home for Sabina. Now I can go back to battling deadlines and the bulge, and to thinking about adopting a son for our family over the next few years. It’s been mentioned in our household, but I don’t think we are physically and emotionally prepared for the journey just yet. I am thinking 5 to 10 years, but no better time to start planning than now, because according to research, the process takes time and money. I even told my husband that I am willing to forego our church wedding (I had a civil ceremony, but have been happily married for 5 years), just so I can adopt sooner. My daughters will be the best big sisters—I can see it already. I remember back when I was in high school, the parents of a friend of mine had adopted a baby boy who was left on their doorstep. Another friend’s family took in the child of their help, and raised him as their own. For all who have ever thought about adopting, please consider it because there are thousands of kids in need of families that will nurture, love, and give them hope. But I appeal only to those who are fit and ready to be parents. No use fostering care if you can’t take care of yourselves. You’re better off donating to charitable institutions. And on to our show! This back-to-school issue is filled with the coolest duds for the year. This is my first time to shop for school stuff as a mom, so I am excited for all these adorable outfits, shoes, bags, pencil keepers, lunch boxes, and other whathave-you’s. I grew up with little money for fashion (and for a lot of things), so I think this accounts for why I want to give my girls everything I can. I

We are fortunate to have a celebrity parenting expert and author on our cover (along with her lovable darlings, Mason and Maya), Josie Bissett, who is as stunning as ever. Josie and the kids cooperated with the photography and styling, hence the photos turned out great. We are also graced by actors Sean and Aonika Thomas and their ‘Lola Bear’ (as I love to call her—look at that endearing baby face) who are a beautiful, picture-perfect family. They recently christened Lola, but it fell on the weekend of my daughter’s 2nd birthday, so we couldn’t attend. I am elated to welcome another angel into the world. And there’s John Perkinson (whom everyone fondly calls, “Perk,” which is a totally befitting nickname for the handsome and gregarious actor) and his adorable son, Free. They show us a thing or two about father and son wear, photographed by yours truly. Meanwhile, I am a year older this August, and I feel insanely blessed to have the opportunity to be writing to all of you now. I feel the same, albeit less light on my feet, and I still have the same passions from my 20’s—seeing a good movie and TV show (just saw Chaos Theory, The Other Boleyn Girl, Reservation Road, revisited The Godfather Trilogy and Moulin Rouge, and 200 more times of HSM; caught up on Gossip Girl and Californication—please do not criticize my eclectic taste in viewing habits), scoring some great finds in a surprise shopping trip, spending an afternoon on the beach, a good few hours of marathon karaoke at home, and listening to my favorite tunes (lately it’s from Coldplay, Rihanna, Elton John, Prince, and Gwen Stefani), but this time I’m dancing with my daughters instead of my girlfriends. I have also learned to make fruit crepes from scratch, so that’s one hazardous talent acquired over the year. To all the kiddies, I wish you a fabulous year of learning ahead, and to us parents, I wish you all the strength to wake up in the morning and do that ceremonious drive to the school lot. Next up—make your own Halloween costumes!

enowned fantastical designer John Galliano teams up with Italian powerhouse Diesel to create his first children’s wear collection. The fusion of Galliano’s creativity and Diesel’s expertise is a five-year license agreement that will start with the fall 2008-2009 season. “I am very excited at this opportunity to expand our products base and to collaborate with a world leader like Diesel. The synergy between two creative companies like ours will create a great success in children’s wear,” says Galliano. He adds that, “Lots of my girlfriends have got kids of their own and they were all on at me to do something for the next generation Galliano, I thought it was time to expand the family!” Galliano is the designer said to be attributed to “hobo meets hobo-chic” on the runway. >>

tion, the two fashion moguls and movers think back and discuss their fond memories as children— celebrating their collaboration for the Galliano Kids Collection.

“I wanted to use the Galliano DNA and create a new uniform for four to fourteen year olds,”

Renzo Rosso: What was your favorite color when you were a kid? John Galliano: Blue—for the sky and the sea, and the faraway lands that it could take me to. Blue is the color you see when you gaze out of the window and look to far away to find adventure. JG: What was your favorite subject at school? RR: History and Geography. JG: What did you dream of being when you were at school? RR: When I was a child, my dream was to work for a company in a role just one step higher than a normal worker.

states the British designer. “I wanted to create a strong identity, use signature Galliano themes and give them a new world to explore, I wish I’d had these sort of things when I was growing up, I didn’t realize it could be such fun!” This exciting alliance wouldn’t have been possible without the all-out support of Diesel’s Renzo Rosso, and in a candid conversa-

16

babycouture BACK-TO-SCHOOL 2008

RR: What’s the best souvenir from your childhood? JG: My friends, my family, moving to London, and learning to flamenco! Childhood’s what shapes and inspires you; mine was very rich from the walk to school, to what I learnt. I think you should be open to adventure—it’s what helps define the person you are to become. Life’s a rollercoaster…

JG: What was your favorite ride at the fair? RR: The merry-go-round! RR: Did you wear bandanas when you were a kid as well? JG: All pirates grow up learning how to tie a bandana. I love hats, caps, headgear, always have and doubt I will ever grow out of it. You should never be afraid to be different.

for, and make their daily job out of it. This way you will be happy for sure, because everyday of your life you’ll be doing something you really love. JG: What made you want to do this kids line with us? Why Galliano, and why kids?

RR: What did you want to become when you were a child? A king, a pirate, or a fashion designer? JG: I wanted to be me! I think that is the best ambition to have! I wanted to have fun and never grow up—I have managed to achieve this, and see the world, and live my dreams! JG: If you could go back to school now, what would you study? What would you change? And what would you tell the kids in your class? RR: I would choose the same textile and design school that I went to, because it gave me a 360° education in the fashion world. If I changed something this time, I would also finish university so I’d also have a complete education on the managerial side of the business. I would advise kids in my class, or now, to choose a subject that they have a strong passion

RR: Having experienced being a young father myself, I was a pioneer in developing a kid collection, which included clothes that 25 years ago did not even exist in the market. I consider John Galliano very similar—he is part of the premium fashion world, and I admire him the most because he is able to bring constant innovation and freshness to this high-end kids collections.

One of the most exceptional children’s designers in a Q&A about her sophisticated, exquisite, and all too covetable line

onnie Young was introduced in September of 2006. How did you create a high-end line in this economy (complete with a baby, children, accessories and furniture collection), and make it a highly successful launch?

B

I think that mothers like myself are looking for products that are unique and beautiful, and that is what we are offering. Even in a bad economy, parents are prepared to spend on their children, and are always looking to give them the best. We’d love to hear about your transition from a Creative Director position at Donna Karan, to starting your own line.

20

babycouture BACK-TO-SCHOOL 2008

I worked with Donna Karan for 16 years and had access to the best fabrics in the world. When I had my children, I just started making things for them with scraps. There were so many requests from friends, I started making more things for baby gifts, flower girl dresses, furniture for my own children and from there the company was born. Is Donna Karan also a part-owner of Bonnie Young? She is an advisor and continued supporter, and was an integral part of helping me get started. The price point is reportedly higher compared to most children’s brands. What makes it a force to reckon with? We know that many royalty and celebrity kids wear Bonnie Young.

www.ibabycouture.com

Price isn’t really such an issue for my clientele. The fabrics, design details and quality are why the price is high. Are you coming out with a more affordable line? Yes, we do have plans in the future to expand to more affordable lines and many product categories. Would you say your designs are more traditional, or modern? I think they are timeless fashions. How long does it take you to design a collection? It is a 6-month process. It’s great that your last name is, “Young.” Perfect for your line. Did you ever toy with other names?

www.ibabycouture.com

It’s coincidental my birth name is Young. Actually, my married name is Bonnie Young Babini, which ironically people confuse with Bambini. I never considered other names for the brand. Kindly tell us more about your beautiful kids, and the part they play in your designs and business. My children Celia Isadora, 7, and Brando Noa, 3 ½, are my inspiration. I would have never launched the company if it wasn’t for them. Photos by Luca Babini. Bonnie Young is available in Urban Zen, 4 Bay St. Sag Harbor, NY 631.725.6176 and Bonnie Young Aspen, 675 E Cooper Ave. Aspen, Colorado 970.925.7299. hail mary janes Always a popular school shoe choice due to its versatile looks and comfort

A few years back, we remember reading in CNNMoney.com about a woman who got addicted to buying Gymboree clothing for her kids that she almost went bankrupt (she reportedly spent $400 a week, and eight to 10 hours a day, every day, shopping for Gymboree outfits on the Web). Hard to blame her, because the line is known for the cutesiest children’s designs that never loses its pinch-that-adorable-baby’s-cheeks factor (and let’s not forget those failsafe Play & Music classes). Recently launched is Gymboree Organics— made from the purest certified organic cotton, are free of pesticides and grown with minimal impact to the environment (as is the organic M.O.). The eco-friendly unisex collection features the same styling, embroidery, and prints that will surely feed another Gymbucks addiction—that’s G-jargon to you, my friend (Gymboree stores).

factor, mary janes can be paired with practically any outfit or uniform. It can take your honey bunny from girly, to sporty, from jeans to dresses, and provides the feet enough heel and arch protection. If your child’s school allows other colors than black, these silver janes from Naturino give the classic kicks a fun twist (Nat. Paris, $71, naturino.com or zappos.com).

CUSTOM READING You’ve seen customized books, posters and journals, but you ain’t seen nothin’ like this. Designed to delight and excite children and their friends (and you’ll get that sense of wonderment yourself when you flip through it), Freckle Box is taking personalization to a whole new level—kids get to see their names spelled in clouds, flowers, stars, pigeons and more in the Nature Name design, and in the Zoo Book, the child’s name is hidden for her to discover throughout the zoo. Perfect keepsake, or shower gift ($34.95 hard cover, frecklebox.com).

lil tree hugger When choosing furniture for your children’s room, first think of what direction (classic, minimalist, modern, color scheme) and theme you want to take (princess, pirates, none, etc.). Decide if you want furniture to grow with your child, or if you want pieces that you can toss after your kids have matured. If you are leaning towards choosing heirloom-quality pieces to complement the design, with traditional materials and a retro-modern look, The Lil Tree is for you. Founder and designer Eddie Martinez has been making furniture as gifts for his friends’ kids, and because it was a hit among them, he and his wife Linda (who was called “Linda Lil Tree” as a child) decided to pursue it as a business. They are all handmade (using 70% recycled wood, and organic, eco-friendly materials), and are personalize-able (names can be embroidered on its different fabrics). Mia Moda Energi Stroller in Flame ($219.99) miamodainc.com or babiesrus.com

Silver Cross Dazzle in Blueberry ($299) silvercrossamerica.com for stores

This masterpiece (at only a little more than $200, heck yeah it is) has a special rear cable brake system and lockable front swivel and handle control for better maneuverability. Its 3-position recline feature, detachable child’s tray (which is a feature that’s usually not carried by other stroller companies), and 5-point harness spell comfort and safety for little traveler on-board. Add the Viva car seat and it becomes a travel system suitable for those out-of-town adventures. May be used from birth, and has a large storage area for your carry-ons. For extra convenience, the hand grip is ergonomic, and boasts of a parent console near the handle, perfect for your drink and some small personal items.

Combine the chichi name of the Silver Cross with the functions of an umbrella stroller, and you will be dazzled. With a sleek modern look that is headturning, striking colors (Cosmic Black, Pumpkin, and Grape), ergonomic handles, and luxury fabric—it is the perfect, single-handed fold-and-go stroller for moms who are not that stroller-savvy (meaning you can’t work stowing and unpacking a big stroller with tons of locks or controls on your own) but still want a cool, lightweight (15.4 lbs, and unfolded it stands at 42.75 in., with a width of 19.3 in.) ride for their kids. It is a stylish umbrella pram that will get you that seal of approval from other parents in the know.

“I saw the Mia Moda online a couple of times before, and thought that a stroller that looked this good would probably cost a mint. To my surprise, it’s very affordable for its features, and looks very chic. I like the cup holder tray very much, and the detachable tray for my little passenger because it is a complete mobile system for us both!”—Annie Sargento, 27

“The best part about this stroller is its height and width—my 5-year old comfortably fits, with room to spare up the top of his head, and yet if you put a little toddler in it, they still feel and look comfy as well. I am around 5’7”, so the height of the handles are perfect for me. I get stopped many times on the street by other parents wanting to know where to get this ride. Very happy with it.”—Jojo Lee, 34

Her Law and Order Mariska Hargitay to you! Her name was the catchphrase in Mike Myers’ recent movie, “The Love Guru” as a fake Hindi greeting. She even made a cameo in the film, a dream come true for this brilliant and gorgeous “Law & Order: SVU” star to do a comedy, and to finally teach everybody how to pronounce her name correctly. sie to view the complete issue When Josie Bissett first entered the photographer’s studio, the ‘90s flashed before my eyes. The grunge fashion, the proliferation of hip-hop and alternative music, and of course, the TV shows. Who can forget the most famous (and fascinating) apartment complex in the world? It’s hard to imagine the sweet, down-toearth, ageless, beautiful blonde in the middle of all the catfights, betrayal, wife-swapping and coming back from the dead that Melrose Place was known for, but it is the same program that made Josie a household name. Well,at to ibabycouture.com those in their late 20’s and above, at subscribe the very least. So we asked her if her kids know of Jane Mancini, her character on the series, and she says that, “They’ve never seen Melrose Place, but they know about the show and that it was a huge part of my life before they were born.” PHOTOS BY DANI BRUBAKER TEXT AND STYLING BY KARIZ FAVIS HAIR AND MAKE-UP BY IRIS MOREAU

I can’t imagine my life without my kids. Raising them has been the greatest joy in my life. Fast track to today, and more than 40 magazine covers after, and the same golden-haired headturner is now mom to 2 kids from former husband (and Melrose co-star) Rob Estes—Mason Tru, 9, and Maya Rose, 6—two of the best-behaved and gorgeous children we’ve ever had the pleasure to dress and photograph. Although the couple is now divorced, they remain close and still get to do activities as a family, and their children love it when they are able to do so. In fact, Rob Estes’ girlfriend brought the kids to the photo shoot because Josie went ahead for hair and make-up, and we thought that she was Josie’s sister. Apart from having similar looks, they looked like a happy family all together.

She is raising the kids in her hometown Snoqualmie, a decision she made because, “Those close to me know that I am not a big fan of living in “Hollywood.” It is not a place I’ve ever wanted to raise children. Washington is where I grew up and it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I love the people, the seasons, and the pace of life. It’s an incredible place to raise children. [Although] If a child has two great parents, they can be raised anywhere!” Bringing up her little marvels (the number and genders she’s always wanted) was, “Exactly what I dreamed of. I can’t imagine my life without my kids. Raising them has been the greatest joy in my life.” And they may be all the way in Snoqualmie, but the parenting when you’re a pop-icon still has its ups and downs. “There are a lot of perks that go along with being a celebrity, but the hardest part would be the lack of privacy.”

Josie is considered a “parenting expert” by many, after penning 2 books on the subject of child-rearing called, “Little Bits of Wisdom,” and “Making Memories.” Josie says that, “They are both compilations of parenting tips and advice from real parents. Both books have been an enormous inspiration to me as a mother. The insights and wisdom I’ve gained from them has been invaluable to my journey as a parent.” She is launching her third title this September, but this time the book is targeted to the children’s set. “Tickle Monster” she said came to her when, “I was tickling Mason one evening and the “Tickle Monster” story literally flew out of my mouth. After I put him to sleep, I quickly wrote it down and just 7 short years later, it’s finally finished!” Josie is extremely excited about the project, and is actually on to her next children’s book, one inspired by her daughter this time around. I mentioned that I love the names of her children, and she says she got them from, “My best friend’s nephew’s name is “Mason.” I heard his name many years before I started having children, and always wanted it for my boy’s name. I found Maya’s name while looking in a baby name book. Aside from it being an incredibly beautiful name, we love how it sounds with Mason.”

Josie started early in the business, and even moved to Japan to get a headstart. “I knew what I wanted at a very young age. I have a fairly strong determined personality, and I’ve never liked the word, “no.” I firmly believe that if we have faith in ourselves, we can achieve anything. I have to admit, moving to Japan and LA when I was 17 was a bit scary, but thankfully everything turned out just fine!” When asked if she would approve of the same road for her kids if they asked for her blessing, she replies that, “Both kids enjoy performing, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up in show business of some sort. Finding our true passions and doing what we love is important to me, so if they find real happiness in show business then I am ok with it—as long as they go to college first!”

I complimented Josie on how her kids look so happy and welladjusted. “Thank you! Rob and I love them more than anything in the world, and they both know it and feel it. Our kids come first. We also teach them the importance of communication. Especially when it comes to “feelings.” They know that they are safe to express whatever is going on inside them.”

of lollygagging in boutiques and coffee shops with girlfriends is far and few between.” Speaking of shopping, what’s her biggest splurge for Mason and Maya? “Hmm. I can’t really think of anything major. I guess it would be their Rainbow Systems jungle gym.” She also loves the clothing brand Mini-Boden, and Burt’s Bees products for them.

So when she’s not filming for a TV show (she is currently shooting a series on ABC Family called “The Secret life of the American Teenager”), while waiting for the kids to get home from school, what does she do? “I never feel like I am “waiting” for my kids to get out of school. There are always things to get done. If I happen to be “waiting,” I am usually in the school car pool lane listening to Rabbi Schumely on XM Radio, or making phone calls.” And yet looking at her, one would never think she gets harried on a daily basis. To this day, Josie still fits into a 0 to 2, and we found this out because she perfectly fits the meager samples sizes of the clothes we brought for the shoot. “I workout—weight train, cardio and yoga—and eat a pretty balanced diet.” She says her style has, “Pretty much stayed the same, except for the fact that there are days that I don’t have time to change out of my workout clothes, and the days

Since dawdling in the shops isn’t an option for Josie just yet, she is adding another title to her resume. “I am also working on a book tentatively titled, “A Great Couple: Lessons In Love.” I will be interviewing couples that have that special relationship we all dream of. This week, I [talked to] 3 couples who have been happily married for over 45 years! I am so excited to share the wisdom from these remarkable couples!” Josie adds that everyone can recommend an amazing couple for her book at josiebissett.com. “After 13 years of marriage, and ultimately a divorce, I am on a quest to find out what exactly makes, “a great couple.” What makes a relationship last? Is it communication? Choosing to love? Acceptance? Compatibility?” From a woman who packed up and left for Asia at 17, starred in one of the biggest TV shows in the world, maintains the figure of a teen-ager, and is successfully raising her kids away from the limelight for now, you can bet Josie will not rest in finding out the answers to that.

t

he dashing actor beams at Lola Jolie, his firstborn with wife, the lovely and charming actress, Aonika Laurent, and the couple can’t seem to be happier. It’s a quiet and clean house for the threesome, which is very admirable for new parents. You can see the family is close-knit, and although the good-looking father has already performed in movies such as, “A Raisin In The Sun,” and “Cruel Intentions,” they are a regular, loving couple who gush at their baby girl—who’s obviously got them both wrapped around her little pinkie. This fall, we’ll catch Sean in a horror-western movie called, “The Burrowers,” and the couple is also planning to produce a few projects of their own, beginning with “Yellow Moon,” which is written by Aonika herself. For now, they’re concentrating on being the proud new parents of their petit cherie with those sweetest, big brown eyes—and already daddy’s teaching her a move or two, what with hip-hop and R&B music playing in the background while we do the shoot. Aonika shed some proud momma tears throughout the photo session while looking at her family’s moments come to life on the photographer’s computer. Though you might think that this is some sort of postpartum sensitivity, if you meet Aonika, you’ll know that the kind woman she seems to be just adores her family. We told her that she looks so in-love with her spouse and daughter, and she smiles at Sean while holding Lola, and teases about her husband, “Thanks, yeah, we like him. I think we’ll keep him.” Sean just grins back at his wife—and gives her that amorous look reserved for those couples meant to be together.

We heard your wedding was postponed due to Hurricane Katrina.

Aonika: At first I was in shock. I couldn’t believe that my hometown was under water. I didn’t want to accept the reality of what was happening. The truth is, we were more concerned for my family and our friends who lost everything. We spent our energy helping to rebuild the lives of my family members and my most favorite city in the world. Katrina changed Sean and me. It redefined our strength, and opened my eyes to a deeper layer of love and charity in my husband. Five months later we brought 200 of our favorite people to the sparse city and married. It was the most beautiful spring wedding.

t’s always a rare occasion and delight seeing Brad Pitt together with his daughter, Shiloh, out in public, which is why they always get hounded by the paparazzi and passersby. With the genes of two of the most beautiful people in the world, it is no wonder most are fascinated—people can’t wait to see which parent she’ll grow up to look more like (and she wins either way), or what Shiloh and the rest of the Jolie-Pitt kids be wearing next. Now a big sister to newborn twins, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, Brad is holding on to her tight while doing his best to shield his Namibia-born daughter (who’s also clutching on to her baby doll) from all the cameras as they are out shopping in Cannes. The first official photos released when Shiloh was born reportedly fetched a total of $10M, which her parents donated to an undisclosed charity.
