EDITOR’S NOTE

Two for Two

Me taking behind-the-scenes photos of the shoot at Soleil’s backyard

Photographer Anne Marie Fox showing a then-pregnant Soleil what we’ve photographed so far

My baby girl, Maxine, turning 2 in July, wearing Enchanted Enfant Couture

This issue marks the beginning of Baby Couture’s third year, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how things are going with the magazine. God has been most kind, and so have our readers (you) and advertisers, which is why I want to begin this with a tight hug and sincere thanks out to you who have supported Baby Couture. More blessings and love to you all. It’s very exciting for us to witness, and in our way, contribute to how children’s fashion in the U.S. has evolved, and is continuing to grow. Children’s designers are getting better at their craft (evident in our fashion spreads), the fabrics getting more striking and their quality outstanding, and the industry in general garnering more buzz and awareness, especially with all the celebrities getting pregnant and expanding their families. A lot of the media’s consciousness with children’s clothing and products can be attributed to these public figures—but personally, it was giving birth to my daughter almost 5 years ago that opened my eyes to this fantastic world of fashion and goodies for my kids. I was, and still am, hooked on getting them the coolest clothes, shoes, toys, furniture, gadgets, you name it. Now that I have two girls, it’s double the fun. My utmost joy is in spending my time with, and providing for my girls. I rarely have “me” time, and I am certainly not complaining, because I figured I’d have all of that personal time when they’re grown and begging me to stop checking their cell phones or online diary—or whatever it is that kids keep private nowadays. I am totally gonna do to them what my mom did to me. It’s all about protection, ladies and gents, and I am watching my kids like a hawk. Our family recently made the decision to uproot from the East Coast to L.A. because of all the photo shoots we do here, and plus it got tiring with all the flying, transporting a zillion luggage around. All of us love the weather and the space, and I must commend the Governator for his wonderful job in keeping the streets clean. As of present, I’m stressing out because I still have to find a school for my eldest. It’s been so busy that I’ve only applied her to one, and I’ve heard from other parents that you have to apply to at least 5, a year or two ahead. I started 4 months ago, so if she doesn’t get in, I am *bleeped* (that’s as

12

babycouture ANNIVERSARY ISSUE 2008

far as I go when it comes to cussing now). When it comes to styling the fashion editorials and conceptualizing the issues, I feel much more in control, but this school drama is nerve-racking. Please wish us luck, and I’ll keep you all posted on how it turns out. One of the best things that have come out of our move is meeting new girl friends—two extremely gifted and kind artists whom I met at the cover photo shoot. I was telling Soleil Moon Frye that I absolutely adored her character Punky Brewster as a kid, and I am enormously happy to have covered both her pre- and post-pregnancy on our 2-cover special. It is always refreshing to know someone so caring and down-to-earth, and Soleil is just that. She is hardworking, loving, and is an inspiration for her ideals in keeping the world safe and clean for generations to come. What better way to celebrate the magazine’s second anniversary than immortalizing the birth and the toddler years of the babies of one of our most loved TV characters of all time? Please allow me to wish my daughter Maxine a great 2nd birthday this July (hence the number 2 is significant this issue). My love, our family would not be complete without your heartwarming smiles, and the way you randomly say “coconut” with such comedic timing, that it sounds like the funniest word we’ve ever heard. On a side note, I am a frozen coconut fanatic, and my health has never been better for it. We are also celebrating Father’s Day this June, so to my husband, thank you—in my eyes, our kids couldn’t have gotten a kinder, handsomer, more devoted dad. Since I was raised by a single mother, I am greeting my Mama a “Happy Father’s Day” as well, not because she got the title by default, but because she is the bestest Mom and Dad in one. Thanks, Ma. So happy 2nd birthday, Baby Couture, I love you. Margaritas for everyone, woot woot!

editor@ibabycouture.com

P.S. I photographed the story, “Surf’s Up!” It’s been almost 3 years since I shot for a magazine. Hope you like it.

the toes knows

hile most pediatricians recommend that a child go barefoot, it is not always realistic or sensible to do so, especially in an environment that is not familiar to the child. Even the sand in your favorite playground or beach may have hidden debris. For infants and toddlers, footwear should be well-constructed, but the soles should be flexible and the material breathable, in order to support healthy and natural growth of those chubby little feet. Babies’ feet are primarily made of developing bones made of cartilage, which accounts for that cute wobble that in turn makes them susceptible to falls and at risk for wounds. As a rule of thumb, try to leave ¼ or ½ of an inch extra from the longest toe, in order to allow some room for wiggly toes and those chubby, sweaty baby feet you love to take a whiff of.

Give us anchor prints anytime, and we’ll show you a delightfully-dressed child. There’s something about the sea icon that whisks you away to a more relaxed place, and Hula Mula’s “edgy but girly” line does just that. Taking its cue from the vintage sailor era of the swinging ‘40s, the happy and nostalgic prints will surely get a thumbs-up from parents and kids alike. This season also covers vintage plaids, rockabilly stripes, frilly skirts and polkadot puffed sleeve jackets and bloomers (hulamula.com).

Because her son suffered with asthma as an infant, JUBI products are made with water-based bleaching and special, safe dyes—making them soft, snuggly and appealing to health and style conscious parents. This summer, indulge in their hooded towels and baby and toddler robes which come with nickel domes and tie so it can be securely fastened (jubi.us.com or call 646.269.5164).

Swimwear Care While the playful tykes’ bottom-rubbing against pool edges and sandy shores is inevitable, do what you can to keep their splash-able garments wearable with these few tips: Soak swimsuit with clear water to absorb less chlorine (its mortal enemy along with salt and oil); avoid prolonged exposure to heat; hand wash in cool water and hang them to dry indoor after use. These guidelines will help avoid flaking, sagging and fading of the swimwear. On the same note, check out French line PATE DE SABLE with their Mediterranean-inspired children and teen swim collection that make you wish you were strutting around in them instead (Pate de Sable, westvillagekids.com).

Mother Nature With a growing loyal celebrity following (which reportedly includes the Jolie-Pitts), NURTURED BY NATURE is a leader in the baby market with its trans-seasonal Heirloom Collection called “Bud Cotton,” which is hand-knitted with mother of pearl buttons and lace edging. The cotton used is free of toxic residues and complies with The Oeko-Tex standard 100. It is hypoallergenic, exceedingly comfy, and although the attention to detail and quality tends to cost more to manufacture, the brand still sits quite firmly at the upper end of the market for discerning parents (nurturedbynature.co.nz or call 646.269.5164).

The Vibe is the best value double stroller without sacrificing style

Phil and Ted’s Vibe ($599, Double Kit not included) letsgostrolling.com or philandteds.com

It is hard not to gush when talking about the Phil & Ted’s Vibe, much so that we had to take a little step back and regain our composure. Sorry, but we get this excited once in a while when testing new gear that is pure genius. With its sleek and contemporary design, plush seats, single-action one-touch hand-brake (push the red button to stop—so simple, why no one thought of it before is surprising), double inline stroller—the latest offering from the makers of the Sport Double that we loved for the longest time, deserves a standing ovation. With improved zip-recline washable padded seats and folding system (you can fold it with the two seats flat without taking out the double kit), and an aluminum body weighing only 22 lbs.—the Vibe promises that it’s all the stroller you’ll need for 2 kids and 6 years. Plus, as far as highend strollers are concerned, the price of 2 strollers for one is icing on the cake.

30

babycouture ANNIVERSARY ISSUE 2008

“I am glad that I was asked to test the new Vibe because I’ve owned its predecessor for years, the Sport Double. The Vibe is filled with upgrades from the older model, and that is an understatement. The new soft seating is a great improvement, and the handbrakes are great to have, especially when you’re lugging two kids around with a hefty diaper bag. I don’t know how its makers can top the Vibe. Kudos!”—Geraldine Signier, 33

Easy to carry at only 16.8 lbs, but packs a punch with its performance

“I actually did a double-take when I saw that there is still a stroller out there at the $200 range. Not only is this stroller practical, it is cute and easy to maneuver. I am more of a ‘travel light’ type of gal, so I am very pleased at how this compact stroller performed, and how easy it was to stow away.”—Mary Ann, 34

Its ‘big brother,’ the Baby Jogger City Elite, is one of our favorite buggies of all time, but for those who prefer their rides in smaller sizes, the City Mini Single is for you. With practically the same performance level, but lighter and more compact, this 16.8 lb. ride is easy to tote, and can carry up to 50 lbs. The 8-inch, quick-release wheels make for a smooth drive over urban terrain. Because of its minimal but stylish look and functional features (with the patented one-step quick fold technology that the company prides itself on), it rightfully won the Gold Award in this year’s National Parenting Publications Awards (NAPPA). The 150-degree reclining capacity, comfy shoulder pads and easy swivel (and low cost) will make you even more of a believer.

T

he gorgeous and talented actress, writer and director Soleil Moon Frye as a mother is a far cry from the real parents of Punky Brewster, the main character whom she played in the immensely successful sitcom that lasted four seasons in the ‘80s, about a child who was abandoned by her mom and dad in a shopping center in Chicago and was eventually adopted by a widower named Henry. This show made Soleil a household name to this day. She also recently made a touching, award-winning documentary on her father’s battle with Alzheimer’s Disease called “Sonny Boy,” which has gathered acclaim among different awardgiving bodies. The title was based from her dad’s nickname, “Sonny,” which is what he was called as a boxer. She’ll be seen on the big screen again soon, on a movie with Janeane Garofalo and Rebecca Gayheart titled, “For Better Or For Worse,” and is excited about this new project. Although she is always a hands-on mom to two beautiful girls first, Soleil is also a proud entrepreneur who co-owns an ecofriendly boutique located in Los Angeles called, “The Little Seed.” Boasting of a wide array of environmentallyconscious wares, the store is a one-stop, inviting shopping sanctuary for parents looking for safe products for their children—complete from the store’s recycled bags, to its no V.O.C. paint on the walls. With a toddler and infant now in tow, Soleil welcomed us into her lovely Moroccaninspired abode—chronicling both her pre- and post- second pregnancy. Now fine-tuning her parenting skills to the beat of a toddler and an infant, she also filled us in on how to keep marriages intact, on her babies’ distinctive names, learning the ropes of retailing, and on growing up on a Hollywood set, Punky-style.

Jason and I were so young when we met on the set of a movie he was producing. I was 18, and still in college in New York. I pitched his company an idea for a film that I wanted to make, and a few weeks later, they called—and I guess you can say that the best thing that came out of that was us meeting one another. We fell in love, and I left school and moved back to L.A. We are going to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary in October. Future plans? 2nd Anniversary Special

We would love to go global, and to focus on our private label, “The Little Seed.” We’re always turning to our family and friends for advice, because we know we can’t do this alone. On her personal style as a mom

I don’t put much time into getting ready. I used to take time, and now it’s like five minutes and I’m out of the house. The focus now is Poet and Jagger. I throw on sweatpants and run out of the house— without make-up on—but I always try to make sure that the diaper bag is together.

Soleil & Jagger

The former child star on family, business, unique names, and the dash in between

One-of-a-kind names for her girls: Poet Sienna Rose and Jagger Joseph Blue

The Little Seed

Splurges for the kids?

I think Poet chose her own name. We were at our friend’s house on a beautiful island when we thought of it, and it was something that kept on following us throughout the pregnancy. On Father’s day, we asked Poet, who was then in my tummy, for what she wanted her name to be, and we looked up and saw a sign that said, “Poet” and right beside it was a quote that we loved from Edgar Allan Poe [“All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream”]. Jagger was a name that Jason and I both always really loved. She was kicking and bouncing around my belly so much that it felt very fitting for her.

When I had Poet, and my partner Paige [Tolmach] had her son Jackson, it felt like our eyes were opened to the world for the first time. When you have kids, your perspective changes so much. We both had so many questions about parenthood, and what was healthy for our children. We spent hundreds of hours searching for organic alternatives that were safe and non-toxic, and we realized there wasn’t really a safe haven for families to go to. We knew that if we were feeling this way, there must be millions of other people feeling the same way, so we created ”The Little Seed.”

Did you know the name “Jagger” was going to be so controversial?

What the children’s retail business is like

All of our organic goodies at the store. My splurges have turned into the more simple things—going to Disneyland, taking Poet and Jagger to the trains. Now my interest is in art and books, and things that can carry on in the family. Photography and shooting Super 8. My biggest splurge is probably family gatherings. The holidays are very big here. Your priorities really change when you have kids. Now, I’m more excited about getting an Orbit stroller than a new pair of shoes.
