It’s time for back to school and we all know what that means— shopping. We’re breaking
out the backpacks, cable-knit tights, corduroy, and more to celebrate the impending cool weather and all of the excitement that comes along with it. It’s such a fabulous season for fashion and this issue is packed with our favorite back to school picks to make sure you greet the new season with style. Here at BSM, we try to encapsulate the modern parent in every one-hundred page issue, so for our fall cover we chose hip Hollywood dad Dean McDermott and his super chic brood. Dean cooked up a serious recipe for style in our cover shoot, showing all of us the culinary power that inspired his new website, The Gourmet Dad. Marie Claire, and Sports Illustrated. Determined to prove naysayers wrong, Maran turned to acting and proceeded to appear in films like The Aviator, Van Helsing, and Little Black Book. Maran was accustomed to traveling the world on photo shoots and while pregnant with her first child, asked makeup artists for non-toxic, natural cosmetics that would be safe for a pregnant woman and her baby; she soon learned no such thing existed.
Soon after, on a shoot in the South of France, Josie discovered the “Moroccan miracle moisturizer” that would change her life and many others— ultimately evolving into her own signature line of socially and environmentally responsible, Argan Oil-based skincare and cosmetics. BABYSTYLE MAGAZINE: How has your life changed since becoming a mom? JOSIE MARAN: Having children of my own has led me to a whole new “ecoawakening.” I feel inspired to be even more conscious of people’s impact on the environment. When I was pregnant with my first daughter, Rumi Joon, I started considering how what I was putting on my body and skin. So I started my natural line of cosmetics to spread beauty and joy and health. I want my daughters to see me as a person who brings happiness and light to people’s lives. Someone who strives for change, and always strives to be better by doing better. BSM: How has your career changed since you’ve become a mother? JM: Ali and I have built a company based on work and family blending together. We’ve got at least one dog in the office every day and we encourage people to bring in their babies if they want to. I want my work community to be an extension of

my personal community. We’re a family! I’m so lucky to have a team that pitches in with my workload—as a CEO and as a mom—when I need it. I truly believe “the village” will help me raise my girls. BSM: Describe your personal style. What are your go-to pieces, colors, and patterns? JM: My style is girly and eclectic. I love to play dress up and I have a weakness for heels! When it comes to fashion and décor, I tend to mix new pieces with repurposed vintage pieces. One of my favorite dresses is vintage. I love when there’s history behind a favorite dress or a piece of furniture in my home. BSM: How would you describe your children’s style? JM: I want my kids to be comfy so they can run around and play without worrying about their clothes. Right now, Indi Joon is living in Aden + Anais swaddlers. She’s super girly, and loves dresses, but right now she’s wearing a lot of bell-bottoms. She looks like a little hippie chick! BSM: You just delivered your second child! How was this pregnancy different than your first? JM: I love being outside, so the choice to give birth in the great outdoors was a natural for me. Being surrounded by birds, plants, and my family was much better than being in a hospital. A home birth was the perfect choice for me—I did it with Rumi and decided to do the same with Indi. I understand that this birth choice isn’t for everyone, but I trust my body to do what women have been doing for thousands of years. While my daughters’ births were very different—Rumi was born in 14 hours under a jasmine vine, and Indi was born in 4 hours under a honeysuckle bush—each was a truly magical experience. I brought my girls out of my body and into nature, and I hope this early experience inspires them to remember their ties to the earth. BSM: What’s the strangest pregnancy craving you’ve had? JM: With Rumi I wanted pickles and ice cream, but with Indi I went for healthy, spicy foods like Indian and Thai curries. BSM: You’re an eco-conscious parent. What is important to you in raising your children this way? JM: I was raised in a bohemian household in Northern California where I grew up appreciating natural, unpretentious beauty. were always into a socially conscious way of living. When I was pregnant, I became more even more conscious. I try to teach my girls to love and care for nature—including creepy crawlies like spiders and bugs. My girls are surrounded by ecoconscious initiatives, from recycling and reusing, to coming to my office in Hollywood and hearing about the natural beauty products we create. BSM: Best piece of parenting advice you’ve ever received? JM: My mom told me to remember how I was as a child when it came to Rumi. If you can be empathetic with your kid and see their perspective, you can find the solution. When you forget how it was to be young, that gets much harder. BSM: How did you decide on your children’s names? JM: We chose Rumi Joon in honor of Ali’s Persian heritage. Rumi was a famous 13th century poet and theologian who wrote about love and Joon means “dear” in Farsi. We’ve always loved the

name Indi. It feels strong, independent, and full of life. The name itself means “gift,” which resonated with us because she is already such a blessing to our lives. We chose to give her the same middle name as Rumi— Joon. It ties our daughters to their Persian heritage and to each other. BSM: What are five essentials every mom must have in her wardrobe or gear arsenal? JM: My must-haves are a comfy sling for baby, a breast pumping bra to keep you hands-free, my 100% Pure Argan Oil for head to toe moisture for mom and baby, beautiful easy flowing dresses, and feminine slip-on ballet flats. When it comes to maternity wear, my mantra is to stay comfortable, but look for pretty, flowy pieces to keep you feeling chic. BSM: What are your simple steps to great style? JM: Less is more. I believe in a look that is healthy, natural and vibrant. My line is about enhancing natural beauty, not covering imperfections. I use it as a daily moisturizer all over my face and body, to heal rough cuticles, fix split ends, and a bunch of other things. BSM: If we were to look inside your handbag, what items would tell us you’re a mom? JM: Diapers and breast pads. So glamorous! BSM: Looking back on your first days as a parent, what advice would you give yourself? JM: I wish I knew that I didn’t need so much stuff to raise a happy baby! It’s easy to collect a mountain of toys, but how many get used? BSM: How do you prepare for baby? What steps do you take? JM: I start by paying serious attention to everything I eat so the baby gets everything she needs. I also take a lot more time for me— checking in with my body and my baby. Prenatal yoga is a big help.

BSM: How do you begin each morning and end each day? Do you have a routine? JM: I jump out of bed to make some coffee, brush my teeth, then clean my face with Josie Maran Bear Naked Wipes. SABRINA SOTO: In my early career, I would help out my mother in her decorating and home staging business. I loved it and soon developed a natural passion and talent for design. I enjoyed creating beautiful spaces and knew that this is what I wanted to do. I just never thought I would be able to do it on television! BSM: What is your overall approach to designing children’s spaces? SS: Children love color and playful spaces, and so do I! When designing a children’s space, I love to incorporate large colorful artwork and graphic wallpaper. SS: Stores like Pottery Barn Kids, Target, and Etsy carry an array of fun children’s furniture and accessories at budget friendly costs. You can find just about anything from bedding to nightlights. If you can’t find something in-store, always check online for more inventory and options. BSM: What are your simple tips to creating a great space? What’s the ultimate no-no in designing a space? SS: Before you begin to design anything, it’s very important to understand your space. What is the main purpose of the room? Who will be using it? What is your design goal? Once everything is set and evaluated, you are ready to begin. Design in layers or steps. First choose a color scheme. Then pick out the main, heavier pieces for the space such a sofa or a bed. Now you are ready to accessorize. I often see people trying to design backwards. They purchase the small pieces first or even everything at once and then they try to design and soon realize they have a jumble of items that either don’t fit or don’t match. Designing your space is a lot like dressing yourself. You put on your clothes and then you accessorize. You follow a process. BSM: If on a budget, what is one design element

that should always be a splurge? SS: Always spend on the larger, staple pieces. Low budget and cheaper furniture tends to wear out and age a lot faster. Try choosing neutral furniture to match many design themes. This makes redecorating a lot easier and saves you money in the long run. BSM: What are some practical pieces that still look chic and are great to include in children’s spaces? SS: Bright storage ottomans are great in children’s rooms. They provide seating and a space to put away toys and accessories. Floating shelves are great for displaying memorabilia and don’t occupy floor space. Temporary wallpapers are fun and simple to apply. Remove them for a quick design change. If you have hardwood flooring, plush rugs are excellent for a designated play area. BSM: What is your best piece of design advice you can give to parents designing children’s spaces? SS: It’s important to keep in mind that kids are kids. Think beyond themes, keep their spaces fun and allow them to express themselves. Buy multipurpose pieces. Look for furniture with easy cleanup fabric as we all know accidents are bound to happen. Most importantly have fun, it’s ok to ask

your children for their opinions, after all it is their space. So go ahead and bring out you inner child and let your design imaginations soar. BSM: What was one of your biggest design challenges? How did you tackle it? SS: Designing my own space while working extremely long hours. It’s like how the cobbler’s children have no shoes! I went without dining chairs and a sofa for months! It took 6 months to finally finish... but again, it’ll never really be done. I always find new things to add and change out. BSM: How is your personal style reflected in your home? What were you inspired by in the design of your home? SS: I moved from a traditional cape cod home in DC to a very modern apartment overlooking Central Park in New York City. There were two things I wanted to accomplish in this new space. I didn’t want to overdecorate it to take away from the amazing views and I didn’t want a home where people felt they needed to use coast-

ers. I wanted a fun playful space where people could put their feet up while watching a movie, or dance on my 450 lb steel coffee table during a party. BSM: Where are your favorite places to shop for yourself? SS: Target, of course! Asos, Etsy, Ebay, TopShop, Zara, Barney’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Gracious Home and ABC Carpet & Home. BSM: Describe a day in your life. SS: I wake up early to answer emails and drink a cup of coffee, then I’m off to Central or Riverside Park for an early morning run. A few hours after, I’m usually on set filming The High Low Project for HGTV. By the time I return home, I tend to do more work and either cook or meet friends for a bite. Cooking is a huge passion of mine and I conveniently live above a gourmet grocery store. It makes life easy and keeps me healthy! BSM: Name five things you cannot live without as a designer. SS: Traveling, a Notebook, Paint Fans and Illustration Markers and 7 hours of sleep! BSM: Talk to us about your new book. What are some great tips that can be found in the book? SS: I’ve always wanted to write a book. It allows me to walk anyone through any design process from the initial design concepts to the beautiful finishing touches. The book keys in on colors, surface treatments and textiles, furniture placement, accessories, and organization. I’ve also included my favorite color schemes and design tricks to make it a much simpler process for you. viva Drescher’s life is under a constant microscope—with the American public looking in as they please. As the newest member of The Real Housewives of New York City, all aspects of her life are up for scrutiny. But the television program is only one detail of Drescher’s busy life story. Some may see the RHONY cast as nothing more than reality stars, but there is much more to the New York beauty than just a luxurious lifestyle. Drescher is the quintessential New York woman— the real Manhattan mom.

“Deciding to do the show was one of the toughest decisions I ever made,” said Drescher of her choice to join the show. Drescher got her start on the program through a friend, who suggested she simply do an interview with the series’ crew. Soon after, Drescher was signed on to be one of the five Real Housewives for Bravo’s New York City-based series. RHONY highlighted the ups, the downs and the ins-and-outs of being a wife and mother in the big city and all of the implications that come with it. Being in the limelight, especially on a show known for its drama, can be wearing on anyone. “We all went through a unique experience that only the three of us can understand,” said Drescher, who was only acquainted with co-star LuAnn de Lesseps prior to shooting but states that she and Carole Radziwill were closest during the series. “We have a strong bond, and our perceptions are very similar.” When the spotlight isn’t on her own life, however, Drescher likes to move the focus over to helping others. She advocates for three separate charities, including Cancer Schmancer, a charity founded by cousin-by-marriage Fran Drescher that focuses on raising awareness for cancer research and early detection in women. She also works very closely with Live4Life, a foundation dedicated to Melanoma research. But it’s the third charity, One Step Ahead, which perhaps hits closest to home. When she was young, Drescher lost her leg in an unfortunate farming accident and has since worn a prosthetic limb. While this debilitating injury may be BABYST YLEM AG . COM

discouraging and hindering to others, Drescher’s resilience and vitality pushed her through the tragedy and has inspired her to help children in situations like her own. “My favorite charity work, which I have been doing since my twenties, has been the one-on-one work I do with new amputees,” she said. “All of these charities have touched me or a loved one personally.” Drescher’s advocacy for those less fortunate is inspirational, but her dedication to something else is even more notable—the love she harbors for her family. Drescher and her husband Reid have four children—three together and one from Drescher’s prior marriage— ranging in ages from 11 to just under two years. Together, the 70 BABYST YLEM AG . COM
couple strives to create a home environment that is disciplined but filled with love. “Reid and I parent with one voice,” she said. “We feel that parenting with one voice is very important, otherwise the children will try to divide and conquer!” The children’s lives are kept to a fairly strict routine, with habitual bedtimes and daily tasks. Drescher says her and her husband are generally in consensus when it comes to making decisions regarding discipline in the house. “Reid and I almost always agree on discipline rules, but we have a rule—If we differ on a parenting decision, the parent who is leaning on the more conservative side wins!” she said. Discipline can be a tough business, though. “The
greatest challenge of motherhood is striking the proper balance of love and discipline,” she said. “Discipline is essential for the child’s well-being and their entrance into society. But with that said, disciplining a child is a lot of work and takes moral strength by a parent.” It’s not all work and no play in the Drescher family though. “I take my children to museums, the theatre and to restaurants all the time in NYC,” she explained. “For kids, there’s the Children’s Museum, Dylan’s Candy Bar, the New York Library, Central Park, ice skating and of course Serendipity! The city has an endless array of goings-on for children!” Of course, Drescher and her family have to look good while roaming the city. For the children, she sticks to traditional garb—Bois de Rose, Bonpoint, Ancar smock dresses and big bows for the girls and Ralph Lauren or Brooks Brothers button-downs, bow ties and blazers for her boy. Her NYC hotspots for children’s fashions include Bonpoint, Magic Windows and Baby Cotons. For herself, Drescher likes to stick with classic style as well. “I love classic pants, bow blouses and an elegant, lady-like look juxtaposed with a hint of modernity,” she described. “I believe in subtly showing your best assets.” Her color favorites include muted beiges, greys, black and ivory. She does like to stray away from the traditional every now and then, though. “I like vintage clothing and pieces here and there,” she said. “I love Peter Som, Anne Bowen and Victor de Sauza for dressing up!’ Drescher also believes that she can stay stylish while still being a practical mommy. Instead of carrying both a purse and a diaper bag, she opts for a larger handbag that she can fit all of her parenting necessities in as well as her own personal items. “A peek into my purse will display a milk bottle, diapers and wipes, a pacifier, lollipop wrappers, Skylander Figures (an X-Box game), an Elmo
doll… you name it!” she said. Drescher stays just as healthy as she does stylish as well. Some of her “mommy must-haves” include organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed milk and meat and Omegabrite Fish Oil supplements. She also cited exercising as one of her favorite things to do in her free time. Style and health aside, Drescher’s number one priority is her family. “Our life is very child-oriented,” she said. “The greatest part of being a mother is the love that I experience with my children.” In fact, when asked what she would name a parenting book if she ever wrote one, she had one simple response: “Just Love Them. [There’s] so much written on how to parent and how to do this and that regarding the raising of children. I say, just love them.”

annying is no easy task, but Beverly Hills Nannies star Amanda Averill’s patient and nurturing spirit and ability to adapt to unpredictability make her a natural at a job that many others couldn’t handle. Averill, a Wisconsin native, has nannied in New York City and San Francisco and currently resides in sunny Beverly Hills, tending to the children of the wealthy area’s many well-to-do families. Nannying as a whole can get hectic at times, but in Beverly Hills, there’s also a glamorous side of the job. “Beverly Hills is full of celebrities, dignitaries, executive, and rich kiddies, which means luxuries! It’s easier to be a nanny in an affluent city like Beverly Hills because everything is covered. They give you a car, they hand over petty cash, they take you on vacation, they give you a higher income. However, with the perks also come more pressures. It’s a catch twenty-two.” Averill has seen her side of hectic. From being charged with the task of exchanging empty water bottles in for cash at a local grocery store—for a grand total of less than $3 profit at the end— to stumbling upon infi-

delity in a client’s home, it seems as though there is never a lack of excitement on the job. Excelling in such a high-pressure work environment takes a special kind of person. “I think moms in Beverly Hills are looking for that ‘special something’ in a nanny, much like a director would be looking for that ‘it’ factor in an audition,” said Averill. “Families want their nanny to not only have childcare experience, but be able to hang out at the country club, speak another language, talk high-end fashion, and golf the back nine. All in a day’s work!” But while these extra qualities are an obvi-

ous perk for Beverly Hills nannies, Averill insists it’s still the deep love of children and unwavering tolerance that’s necessarily for such a job. “To me, a perfect nanny is someone who is a nurturer by nature,” she said. “Kind, happy, responsible and patient. ‘Patience’ is the key word here.” And connecting with the children may be even more important than that. “When parents are scouting a nanny they need to go with what feels right for their family. They should choose someone who the kids interact with the best. After all, it’s the children who will be spending the most time with the nanny!” Averill grew up with this nurturing sort of mentality, getting her babysitting license at age twelve. “I read this book when I was eleven called “Baby Island.” I remember praying at night that God would drop me off there,” Averill reflects. “He didn’t. So I decided to get my babysitter certification at twelve instead!” Averill’s early life in West Bend, Wisconsin has played a large part in her fostering personality and love of a family atmosphere. Averill says that her large, close-knit family truly inspired her to take a career path towards nannying. “My mother was a teacher, and I always wanted to be just like her,” said Averill. “However, I must have missed the ‘teacher boat’ and went straight to the ‘nanny raft!’” Still, Averill’s career fulfills her desire to work closely with children, and the young nanny couldn’t be happier with that. “Children are spontaneous and amazing. iz Lange has shown at New York Fashion Week on two separate occasions, she has a flagship store on New York’s Madison Avenue that is knock-your-socks-off beautiful, and she is a member of the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America. But there’s one more tid-bit that makes this fashion-forward designer stand out from the rest: she does it all for moms-to-be with Liz Lange Maternity. Liz Lange, founder and president of Liz Lange Maternity, has transformed maternity style— she is the face of modern maternity wear. We could even go as far as saying she has dramatically altered society’s very perception of maternity style and fashion. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a little drama? Liz has always been a fan of fashion. “I have always adored fashion,” says Lange in her recent interview with BSM. “[I’ve] been the friend with whom other friends wanted to shop. I grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan with an extremely stylish shopaholic mother.” Prior to maternity style stardom, Liz launched herself into fashion design when she 76 BABYST YLEM AG . COM

was in her 20‘s. She had recently left Vogue Magazine to work for a fashion designer whose work she admired. Always the sartorial, Liz set out to fix that problem, which would eventually become Liz Lange Maternity. Starting in 1997, and stretching over nine

short years, Liz went from a single-room office handling design, production, public relations, sales, and shipping, to coining fashion-forward terms like “maternity chic,” “the fitted maternity silhouette,” and most importantly, Liz Lange Maternity. Along with opening her flagship store on New York’s Madison Avenue, she has created Liz Lange for Nike—a line of maternity active wear— and in 2002, Liz began her partnership with Target, designing the Liz Lange for Target line. It is the only maternity product sold in Target stores nationwide. To say Liz is qualified is an understatement. So BSM jumped at the chance to speak with Liz about life, lessons à la mode, and the pursuit of fabulous-fashion for moms-to-be. We started off by asking her to describe her style in her own words: “My style is very Upper East Side [Manhattan] classic, lady-like with a twist.” How is your style reflected in your collection? “My collection is similar. People sometimes think of my designs as being overly sexy or cutting edge but really I started with a simple idea that maternity clothing could be fitted (as opposed to the oversized clothing that was so prevalent back when I got started in the late 1990s). I think a beautifully cut fitted garment in a great fabric is sexier than a nude belly baring crop top.” What are your go-to style pieces? What can we find you wearing most? “My #1 go-to pieces are dresses. I live in them. They take 2 seconds to put on in the morning and yet when wearing one, you are always pulled together and ready for anything. In the summer I pair them with flip flops or flats for day and strappy sandals or heels for evening. In the winter, I throw on to-the-knee boots or pumps and layer a cardigan over them. To me nothing is easier, chicer, sexier than a woman in a great dress (and they are so comfortable too!).” Give us a sneak peek. How does a day as Liz Lange begin
and end? “I seem to require very little sleep. I am awake by around 5:30am. By 8am, I have walked our dog, fed the kids, worked out and sent the kids off to school. My days are always different... here are some of the activities that are often on the menu: Design meetings for my new nonmaternity collection exclusively for HSN, Completely Me by Liz Lange, Target Design meetings, magazine, newspaper and TV interviews, speaking engagements, new business meetings, working on my next book, conference calls, answering customer emails and tweets, travel for speeches, Target meetings in Minneapolis, press appearances, and my live shows each month on HSN and Shopping Channel Canada. When I don’t have a business lunch, I always have lunch with either my sister, together we have a shopping e-newsletter called Shopafrolic.com or my best friend, fellow design entrepreneur, Jonathan Adler. hen Ingrid Carney was pregnant with her first child, Isabel, she quickly discovered dressing for two was not easy or fashionable. Carney then took the maternity market by storm with the concept of the Bellaband—the essential maternity accessory—and in 2003, founded Ingrid & Isabel which now includes a vast collection of maternity wear for women.
BABYSTYLE MAGAZINE: When did you first know you were interested in design? INGRID CARNEY: I have always loved fashion. My mother may recall better than I, but my earliest memory is as an eight year-old. I fashioned a pair of hip-hugger flares out of a beach towel and thought, “Hey, I just designed something.” I was lucky to have an international upbringing and while I opted to go with marketing over design in school, I feel my interest was heavily influenced by the unique fashion abroad. I was able to blend fashion from many places and showcase ensembles that I thought were interesting and different. BSM: We’re obsessed with Ingrid & Isabel. Tell us how the company came to be. IC: Well, thank you! I like to say I was lucky, but then my husband reminds me that I had a lot of practice before this endeavor. I spent several years in marketing, the last of which were at start up companies in Silicon Valley where I was exposed to so many innovative ideas and a constant desire to create new products or services. With this experience I felt prepared to start Ingrid & Isabel when I thought of the Bellaband. I had no intention of starting a company and loved being a stay-at-home mom, but the idea was original, universal and possible. So, Isabel was born, the Bellaband was pursued, and the company Ingrid & Isabel began. BSM: What was the first piece you designed for the collection? IC: The Bellaband, as it was the inspiration due to a bump in my belly, and really the entire inspiration behind the company. We worked with a factory for nine months to engineer a

knit suitable for the Bellaband. After several rounds of wear testing among pregnant women we launched in 2003. BSM: What should moms look for when selecting pieces to wear during their pregnancy? IC: I recommend taking inventory of one’s closet before purchasing new fashion. Set aside pieces that may grow with your belly— items made with stretch material, empire waists, flowy styles, oversized sweaters, dresses, and pants with stretch. I suggest tees, a legging to pair with tunics, or dresses that may become tunics, and excellent pant options. I think having a black dress you can depend on is very important. Then be sure to dress it up. Colorful flats, cowboy or riding boots, scarves, long necklaces and colorful earrings are always a great choice. BSM: What is your biggest fashion pet peeve? BSM: Where are your favorite places to shop for your children? IC: I love to mix it up. Bubble is a favorite boutique in San Francisco that carries funky and great quality kids clothing. Piece a few items from there with pieces from Tea Collection or Target. BSM: What are some staples every style-savvy mom should have in their closet? IC: A great brown leather belt, preferably worn, a flowy top that goes with everything, a black wedge with a straw heel, a perfect white tee shirt that works for your body shape, and black flats. Plain works, but if it’s two-tone or has sparkle that’s a plus. BSM: Do you have any style secrets? Advice for looking great on little time? IC: Skinny jeans and almost anything on top. I find myself turning to silk tops quite a bit on the most casual of days. Opt for a bit of a heel if you want to dress it up just a tad, and then throw on a special piece of jewelry you wouldn’t normally wear on a casual day. You own it, so wear it! I bet it puts a spring in your step that day! BSM: In three words, describe your life as a mom. IC: An answering machine. LITERALLY. My girls have so many questions and expect answers. So, I supply the answers I know, and we look up the ones I don’t and discover them together. Either way, Mom is the machine with the answers.

BABYSTYLE MAGAZINE: Tell us about the Sheridan French line. SHERIDAN FRENCH: Colorful, chic and effortlessly fun. Most days I do not have the luxury of changing outfits halfway through, so I need to make sure that whatever I put on at 7am will carry me through school drop off, errands, luncheons, business meetings, and date night. I absolutely have to be put together AND comfortable, which every piece in my line achieves. BSM: When did you first realize you wanted to design your own collection? SF: I never thought I would pursue this as a career. I began sewing dresses with my great grandmother and mother before I was a teenager, ended up roping my mother in to helping me sew and design for charity fashion shows while I went to school for my masters in Europe, and shortly after I moved back to Texas the opportunity honestly just fell into my lap. I knew I had to pursue it then and see what came of it. Glad I did! My mom says that by the time I was two years old, I refused to leave the house unless I was wearing at least six silk scarves. My daughter is already the same way. It’s just in our blood. BSM: What are some of your favorite items in the
collection? SF: The Georgina Dresses are my personal favorite clothing items, and I am over the moon for each and every one of my hand-woven clutches and bags, particularly the songket ones. Each one takes three months to make! BSM: What inspires you to create? SF: My life! I truly design for myself—a gal on the go—and everything stems from that. Color BABYST YLEM AG . COM

is like air to me; I cannot live without it. Everything I design stems from those two aspects, yet I am always inspired by travels as well. BSM: How would you describe your own style. What can we always find you wearing? SF: I have an extremely broad range of tastes. Some days I style an outfit with feminine flair, and other days the only thing that feels right is my treasured leather jacket. In the summer I am always wearing neon sandals, and in the winter I wear an old Etro beanie everywhere. My favorite colors are everything in the Pantone swatch book. BSM: Moms are often pressed for time. What are your simple steps to great style? SF: Learn how to do a mean top knot on those days when you just don’t have time to wash and dry your hair. I also couldn’t live without NARS Multiple sticks. For a quick pick me up on the makeup front, there’s not a better product out there. BSM: How are your bright and bold designs carried over in your home? SF: I think my husband is a saint to put up with what
I bring into our home. Don’t get me wrong he likes color also, but I really push the limits. My living room has a leopard print rug, yellow silk drapes, a green lamp with a bright orange shade, orange and turquoise pillows, huge gold lanterns, a neon purple lacquer chair— It is pretty fun and incredible if I do say so myself! My daughter’s room is 100% bohemian, as I wanted it to fit her personality. My oldest son’s is more masculine, especially for a toddler room. Lots of navy and mahogany, with splashes of orange and lemon lime thrown in. The nursery is classic yellow and blue— very soothing for those sleepless nights. BSM: Statement bag or statement shoe? Why? SF: Bag! Even in exercise clothes, you can carry a fabulous bag. You can’t wear Louboutin’s with bike shorts. BSM: Who are your style icons? SF: Elizabeth Taylor for her layering of diamonds, and Kate Moss for her layering of everything that shouldn’t match, but she makes it work. BSM: What is important to you in raising your children? SF: Love, endless and unconditional. What more do they need?

e’s a family man, a guy’s-guy in Hollywood, a devoted husband to Tori Spelling, a motorcycle enthusiast, an actor, a producer, an adventurist, and now a gourmet dad. Dean McDermott has made countless amounts of chicken fingers, mac and cheese, and butter noodles over his thirteen-year tenure as a dad, but has now set his culinary sights on something bigger— his new career as an up-and-coming chef. He’s now taken to his personal website, The Gourmet Dad, to teach how to make gourmet meals with a kid-friendly kick. While he may leave out a few ingredients, sneak in a few more, and cook dishes a bit differently, one thing is certain— he’s doing it all with tremendous style.
BABYSTYLE MAGAZINE: How long have you been interested in cooking? When did you know you wanted to take the culinary leap? DEAN MCDERMOTT: I have always been into cooking. My mom believed that a proper gentleman should know how to cook and clean. I’m good at cleaning, but I’m passionate about cooking. I remember making boxed cakes with my Mom and loving the process of bringing a cake or a meal together. Plus, I loved spend-
ing that time with my mom. As the years went by, cooking would come in and out of my life. I worked as a line cook at a steak house, I was a waiter, a bartender, a prep cook, you name it. I loved the camaraderie and sense of family involved with working in a restaurant. I knew I wanted to take my love for cooking to the next level about 3 years ago. I wanted to refine my cooking knowledge and fortunately, I’m in a place in my life where I can go back to school and get a degree in culinary arts. I can finally fulfill a dream of becoming a chef. BSM: To date, what has been your biggest culinary challenge? How did you tackle it? DM: That has got to be my very first day at school. Keep in mind, the last time I was in a classroom was in 1983. I walked in the classroom, and saw everybody in their whites, cracking open their books, and looking like deer in the headlights when our teaching chef walked in; I was petrified. Not only did I miss the first two classes of the quarter and started off behind everyone, the chef struck the fear of God into the other students. I was like “Oh no,
he’s one of those chefs, a meanie.”

It turns out he is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and he talked me out of leaving the class because I felt I had made a terrible mistake enrolling in this class. Well, I stayed, and after an hour in the class, I was running the show. BSM: What are your favorite things to cook? DM: My favorite thing to cook is duck. I love the rich dense taste it has, it handles different flavoring and sauces very well, plus I love keeping the fat that comes out of the duck to cook with. Anything fried in duck fat is ridiculously good. BSM: We’re certain your kids love when you cook for them. What do you enjoy cooking for them? Have you been able to expand their palettes or turn them into more adventurous eaters? DM: Liquid nitrogen ice cream. The kids help with the ice cream base, and I put on quite a smoke show when I put in the LN2. Making the LN2 ice cream is how I got them to start try92 BABYST YLEM AG . COM
ing new things. By showing them a different way to cook things, I exemplified that at any age you can try new things, experiment with food, and live to tell the tale. I have expanded their palettes little by little, but it doesn’t happen over night. Now they eat salmon, salad, curry chicken, and the list is growing. BSM: Growing up, what was your favorite food? What is your favorite food now? DM: One of my favorite things to eat when I was growing up was my moms spaghetti and meatballs. I would eat so much of it, I remem-
ber leaving the table in pain I was so full. Today one of my favorite things to eat is linguini and tomato sauce. It’s simple and I believe the true test of an Italian restaurant is their sauce. When you get a great sauce on a perfectly cooked pasta with a bit of parmigiano cheese and fresh basil, it’s heavenly. Some time the best dishes are the simplest. BSM: If you could have dinner with one person, who would it be and why? DM: My mom. She passed away when I was fifteen. I never got a chance to say goodbye or tell her how I felt about her, or have the opportunity to spoil her with my successes. She would always go without so we never needed anything. I would also like to cook the dinner and show her my culinary prowess. After all, she started me on this journey. BSM: As we approach the fall back to school season, do you have any tips for quick and easy meals or snacks for little ones? DM: Anything on a stick. You can do cake pops, PB&J, celery flies on a log, carrots and dip, chocolate covered banana rolled in rice crispies, strawberries filled with cream cheese, apples and cheddar, anything! Everything tastes better on a stick. BSM: Let’s talk parenting. You’re one of Hollywood’s favorite celebrity dads. How has your life changed since becoming a parent? DM: First off, I’m flattered to hear that I am a favorite Hollywood Dad. When ever your given credit for being a good parent, it’s music to your ears. Being a Dad has changed me in many ways. As chaotic as it is having a brood of kids, it has a very calming effect on me. As someone who lacks a lot of patience, it has taught me to take a breath, stay calm, and that there is a solution to every problem. I’m not

so reactive anymore. I am responsible for shaping these little ones lives, and what I do or say has a positive and/or negative effect on them, so I have to choose my words and reactions wisely. It really turns you into a great listener, and diplomat with a huge heart. BSM: What traits or quirks do you think your children have inherited from you? DM: Liam has my temper. He has a
short fuse and gets frustrated when he cant do something. He’s a bit of a perfectionist, like his mom. Stella, aside from looking exactly like me, has a bit of the stubborn Scotsman in her. She is very strong willed. Hattie is funny and crazy, just like T and I. She also revs an imaginary throttle with her right hand. I think she likes motorcycles just like her Dad. Jack is 6 foot 3, with a size 14 foot. Guess where he gets that from? BABYST YLEM AG . COM
BSM: What has been your proudest moment as a parent thus far? DM: Seeing any of my children proud of their accomplishments. When Jack tried out for the football team. He had never played the game before, and he made starting defense, and offense. For as proud as he was, I was 10 times more proud. When Liam and Stella did their first dance recital, they were so proud that they had remembered their moves, and I’m sorry, but the two of them in gold sequins melted my heart. BSM: Describe your parenting style. How does your style differ from Tori’s or are you both on the same parenting page? DM: I am definitely the bad cop in the McDermott household. I was brought up with a lot of love and a lot of discipline. I had instilled in me from a very early age to be a gentleman and an all-around good person. I want my kids to have the same traits. Respect is a dying art. BSM: Do you have any hopes of opening your own restaurant? If you could open one, what would you serve and what would you call it? DM: I would absolutely love to open a restaurant, as well as a food truck, and not in any particular order. I would tell you my concept, but I’m afraid if I put it out there, someone might take it. Regardless, it has always been a dream of mine to open a restaurant. BSM: Looking back to your first days as a parent, what is one piece of advice you would give yourself? DM: The one piece of advice that was given to me when I first became a Dad, was to trust my instincts, and to NOT listen to other people’s unsolicited advice. I stuck with that and was amazed how many people offered up their advice and opinions on how I should raise a kid. They came out of the woodwork. BSM: Describe your personal style. What are your goto pieces of clothing or everyday outfits? DM: I would describe my personal style as a little edgy rock and roll-ish. I love John Varvatos. It’s like he designs just for me. His stuff is very cool and he loves good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll music. The Stones, Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Doors. It definitely influences his clothing design, and on top of it all, hhe is one of the nicest people I have ever met. My go-to pieces in my wardrobe are John Varvatos. BSM: Do your children cook with you in the kitchen? What do you let them handle? How would you encourage others to let their kids get involved in the kitchen? 94 BABYST YLEM AG . COM

DM: The kids love to cook with me. The second I open the fridge, they immediately ask me what I’m making and can they help. I let them knead dough, wash veggies, peel potatoes and let them cut fruits and veggies with my close hands on supervision. They know they are to NEVER touch my knives without my help. I want to make sure that they know they are very sharp and dangerous, but I don’t want to make them taboo. I encourage my kids to try anything and everything, but with a head full of knowledge about what their doing and the dangers and benefits of that particular task. If you encourage your children to participate in the making and creation of a dish, the more they will eat that they haven’t tried before. BSM: Where are your favorite restaurants in LA? What are the culinary spots you hit most often? DM: I have so many favorite places to eat in L.A. There are too many to list. I am, however, on a food truck binge. I know, I’m late to the game. But better late than never. I’m obsessed with two trucks and I follow them everywhere— Grill ‘em All and Cousins Maine Lobster. Grill ‘em All makes killer burgers. The Dee Snider— PB and J on a grilled-to-perfection 1/3 of-a-pound burger. The Man O’ War— deep fried Funyu-covered lasagna served on a burger— is absolute heaven. Cousins Maine Lobster serves lobster rolls, bisque, and the most amazing lobster ice cream! Yes, I said lobster ice cream. Sheer brilliance. It’s flown in from Maine fresh daily and you can taste the difference. It’s amazing. BSM: Name five kitchen essentials that every chef parent should have in their arsenal. DM: A good quality chef knife, paring knife and a steel. Spend the extra money to get a really good set and keep them sharp. So many kitchen injuries are a result of dull knives. Good cookware. Again, spend the little extra to get good heavy-bottomed pots and pans. They hold heat really well, and disperse it evenly. They will also last ten times longer then cheap pots and pans. A good food processor. They’re so versatile and can cut, chop, blend, and mix just about anything. It’s a real time saver in the kitchen. A thermometer. It enables you to take the guessing out of cooking proteins by letting you know exactly what temperature its at so you’ll never serve under or over cooked meat. I have an infrared thermometer, you can point it at anything and get its temperature. A good cutting board. I love wood cutting boards, they need maintenance, but are so worth it. I like the grip they provide for your knives and are a lot easier on them than plastic cutting boards. If you have these essentials, you can cook just about anything. BABYST YLEM AG . COM

iffani Thiessen has had many roles in her lifetime. From the iconic Kelly Kapowski on Saved by the Bell to her most recent role as Elizabeth Burke on USA’s White Collar, it’s clear she is a versatile and talented actress. And with the start of PetitNest, a line of eco-friendly baby furniture and décor, you can add designer to the list. There’s one role, however, that Thiessen is especially excited about—the role of mommy.

Thiessen and her husband Brady Smith welcomed daughter Harper Renn into their lives in 2010. Adding a child to the equation can be a stressful situation for any new family, but Thiessen took the big change as elegantly as any mother could. “I find that even though I am juggling many more things and trying to balance it all in a timely fashion, I am actually more care free,” the motherslash-actress said. “I think having a kid makes you appreciate the feeling of ‘whatever happens, happens’ and it’s good for us not to be so tightly wound up.” When Thiessen isn’t at work or designing items for PetitNest with co-founder Lonni Paul, it’s all about time with Harper. “If I’m not working, it’s playing outside, coloring or painting and snuggling and laughing with Harper,” she said. “Oh, and there’s always cooking happening in the kitchen! I love to cook.” Gap, H&M, Zara and Gilt are some of Thiessen’s go-to shops for fashions for her daughter, while simple staples contribute to her own classic style. Jeans, blazers and t-shirts are some of her favorite day-to-day items to reach for, as well as statement jewelry and silk blouses for a touch of style in the mix. And of course, comfortable yet stylish shoes are a must-have for both
on-the-go moms and kids. “Kids should have a cute pair of sandals and a good pair of hip tennis shoes. Shoes are important when your kid is finally walking and then running around everywhere!” Thiessen said of Harper’s shoe necessities, while citing Yosi Samra flats, Converse and Vans as some of her own personal favorites. Besides having an eye for classic style for both herself and her daughter, Thiessen has an eye for design. Her new line of modern furniture and décor provides versatile and eco-friendly cribs, dressers, bedding and wall décor for new parents. last and re-use,” Thiessen said. “We feel our designs are not just for children. You can even use our dressers in other rooms in a house!” Besides the reusability of PetitNest’s furniture, Thiessen tries to stay eco-friendly in other aspects as well. “The biggest thing you can do is to buy eco-friendly, green products. From furniture that is non-toxic and sustainable to cleaning products that are natural and have no harsh chemicals,” she encouraged. “Also, recycle! Almost everything can be recycled these days, so check your local waste management company and see what they will take in your recycling bins.” Thiessen also encourages buying at local farmer’s markets or even growing food independently if possible. Thiessen gets her inspiration for PetitNest from many things, including different architecture, landscaping, interior design and, of course, clothing. In her own home, a simple color was enough inspiration to create a nursery for baby Harper. “Lavender was my favorite color for the moment, so we started the idea first with that and then built around the color,” she said. Harper’s nursery even features some of her mother’s own designs—a PetitNest dresser and a wall tree. “Those are two big statement pieces that will stay in her room for years to come,” Thiessen said. But while designing for PetitNest has become a passion of Thiessen’s, Harper remains number one in her eyes. “I love being a mom. I love it more than I thought I would – which is hard to even think, because I knew I would love it!” she said.

I’d spend hours rearranging my room as a young girl, stay in on a Saturday night to finish a school project and even sell handmade items to friends. BSM: Tell us how your company came to be. JD: I was already working as a successful Interior Designer with my own namesake company and then when we had my daughter, my creativity went into overdrive. I knew instantly that I wanted to mesh my skill of interiors and furniture with the world of family design. From day one, the intentions of what we do is to create a world of stylish pieces that integrate beautifully into

a modern family home. Having children is the most amazing life change but it doesn’t mean you need to check your style at the door once you do. We continue to follow this motto today, each piece we introduce has multi-function— one part beautiful and one part need. BSM: What was the first piece you designed for the collection? JL: The AVA toddler chair. It completely change the way the industry looked at furniture for the little one. It was the first of its kind with its upholstered, modern lines. BSM: What inspires you to create new pieces? JL: A blend of form and function is the key to design success. I am constantly inspired, especially by traveling. My family and I just returned from spending two months in europe in almost 15 different countries! BSM: What advice do you have for parents designing a nursery? JL: When designing a nursery, remember that the room can be designed with items you love! Just because it is a baby’s room, it doesn’t mean you need to only incorporate chicks and bunnies. There are so many choices out there now, don’t get overwhelmed! A beautiful crib, a fabulous glider...and then have fun creating a cozy space with textures through rugs and drapery and pick artwork that has meaning. Overhead light that can dim is a always a must if you can, it creates a gorgeous glow. BSM: What is your biggest design pet peeve and why? JL: My biggest design pet peeve is when the unconventional shows. If I could hide every TV, computer, and iphone charger in ever house when not in use, I would. BSM: Describe your personal style in terms of both fashion and design. How is that reflected in your furniture collection? JL: Always start with the classics and add a twist of vintage, unique

and a little bit of punk. In furniture its the same, classics stand the test of time. pick classics but take a little more risk with the surroundings. BSM: What was the biggest design challenge you’ve faced? JL: My current design project, a beach house. It was built in the 1950’s so it has been torn down to the studs, I only left the basic structure, everything else will be brand new. When tackling a challenge, You can’t look at the big picture or you will be too overwhelmed. Take it day by day, and make decisions every day. It all adds up to a beautiful space once done. It’s when you stall and can’t make a decision that the task at hand then becomes daunting. BSM: What color combos are you into right now? JL: Right now, I am loving a grouping of mixed chairs around the dining room table, I can’t get enough of terrazzo flooring and I’m obsessed with tufted wool plaids piped with a pop of color like hot yellow. BSM: What are your go-to pieces, patterns, or colors? JL: I always love a David Hicks
pattern for wallpaper or flooring. And I always find a way to infuse linen and mohair into a space to warm up a room. BSM: What has been your greatest career accomplishment to date? JL: That I can always be there for my children, no matter what. I have an amazing team at Jennifer Delonge, so having a flexible schedule is very empowering as a mother! Working with two very prominent companies, Snugli and Franklin & Ben, on design collections has been a true love. It has given me the ability to branch out into new categories— baby carriers, strollers, high chairs and cribs. BSM: What are your mommy musthaves? JL: My incredible husband and kids, hot yoga, my beach runs, my amazing girlfriends, and, of course, Conundrum wine. BSM: What can we find your wearing most often? JL: Currently, a beloved Rick Owens jacket and Isabel Marant faux python high-top sneakers.

eing a mother is a full time job of it’s own. Between the cooking, the laundry, the after-school sports and the crisis management that all come with parenthood, it’s difficult to find a moment to catch your breath. So how do some women manage full-time careers while being full-time mothers? For entrepreneurslash-mother of three Carley Roney, it’s all about learning to juggle.

Roney is one of three co-founders of XO Group, a media company housing a multitude of pregnancy, wedding and “everything in between” websites offering young women information, advice and products to aid them through a very transformative portion of their lives. The company’s ventures include The Knot Wedding Network, home and lifestyle how-to guide The Nest, The Bump Baby Network, and fashion and beauty lifestyle website, The Blush. “The Knot, The Nest, The Bump and now The Blush each serve a specific role in the business and have a unique place in my heart,” said Roney of her business ventures. “In many ways, the XO brands are like another set of children!” Roney and her business partners began the group in 1996 after realizing there were limited advice and information resources for modern couples. “With the realization that the world of weddings was outdated, cluttered and chaotic, [we] formed The Knot, Inc.—now known as XO Group, Inc.—to help today’s brides and grooms plan the weddings of their dreams, wheter it’s a country club-chic wedding or a tropical destination wedding,” said the versatile businesswoman. The wedding-based brand quickly grew into a wedding and parenting brand with the addition of The Bump, a collection
of books, websites, and iPhone applications full of “up-to-date, real and reliable” advice and information for new moms. On top of monitoring content, strategizing on marketing and handling many other aspects of the business side of the XO Group family of sites, Roney is a hands-on mother of three children. “Pure madness is how I would describe my day,” said the busy mom and entrepreneur. “Work starts as soon as the alarm clock sounds. Between showers, breakfast and the kid’s extracurricular activities, I barely have time to put on lipgloss!” Staying on top of all of her responsibilities is key. Roney cites that laying out tasks between herself and her husband allows them to stay accountable at home, and keeping priorities straight is always a necessity. “Finding balance between working and being home is definitely the biggest challenge,” she said. “My secret to survival is that when I’m home, I’m home. has several staples that help her tackle any task at hand. A baby carrier, collapsible stroller, reliable breast pump and stylish diaper bag are some pieces that Roney says are essential for her day-to-day duties. Roney also says that “The Baby Bump,” the first book from The Bump collective, is a must-have for on-thego moms. “’The Baby Bump’ is the only pregnancy book with the attitude and style of a modern mom,” she said. “it will help shed light on all the real do’s and don’t’s of pregnancy—it’s like chatting with a been-there, done-that best friend!” The Bump also offers two smartphone applications for tech-savvy moms. mommy one minute, ‘Blackberrywielding, emailing to get the deal done career girl’ the next,” advises Roney. She also urges active, careerdriven moms to simply stay organized. Another is to realize that no matter how hectic things may get at any given point, things will all work out in the end. “I wish that someone had told me that it will all balance out. You have to be willing to make sacrifices in the early days—[they] will come in the form of free time, money and your social life,” said the mom. “But once you have your feet on solid ground, it all evens out.” And the biggest thing that Roney has learned about herself since becoming a mommy-slash-entrepreneur? “You do not understand your capacity to love until you have a child.” Photo courtesy of XO Group

Our job done well, we help you get back to the giggle and enjoy your baby with fun, smart solutions you love from us. We opened our first store October 2003. I would like to think our success is based on the fact that we were conceived as a solution to an existing problem of no go-to trusted resource in the market, and we successfully provide that. parents or mompreneurs to turn their loves into a career they are truly passionate about? AW: Know how you will define success. Be clear if your goals are growth, income, flexibility, creativity, or what. It will become the most important part of your decisions and will drive what you build and whether you end up satisfied and happy with it. BSM: Let’s talk style. What is your go-to ensemble? AW: Jeans, sport coat, wedge platforms and hopefully, some cute jewelry. I’m a huge fan of super simple dresses that you can wear with as much ease jeans and like to wear them with skinny jeans and/ or leggings. I’ve loved Orla Kiely for years, especially her vintage patterns. This year, I’m dying for blues and greens, but as anyone who
knows giggle already knows, I’ve always adored orange. BSM: If you could give your son one piece of style advice, what would it be? AW: Less is more. Invest in quality. Err on the side of classics.

BSM: What is a common misconception about new baby gear? AW: The most universal misperception is that picking gear is more about the latest product features advertised than about your lifestyle. A lot of parents think you have to have a changing table. Today, there are so many great options for convertible dressers. Invest in less! Of course, there are thousands of little product solutions people think they have to have—from binkie/pacifier holders to bottle warmers to crib tents—that are far more likely to be something that’s nice to have rather than anything you ever felt lost without. BSM: What do you think is the ticket to managing motherhood and a career? AW: Organization! I’m a master at night before school activities, preplanned outfits, pre-packed bags, etc. Just like when Tyler was a baby, I prepared baby food in batches. Planning and organization! BSM: Looking back to your first days as a mom, what advice would you give yourself? AW: Breathe. It’s a moment in time,
it goes so fast and everything will work out. BSM: Favorite places to shop for yourself and your children? AW: Beyond giggle, for other furniture, I’m a big Room and Board fan. Beyond a few mainstay brands, I have a few favorite small boutiques. For my own shopping, there is this delightful boutique in Narrowsburg, NY—the Catskills—called Enochian that I cannot get enough of and I adore the founder! For my son, I love Levis and the line ToobyDo. I also love QuickSilver for him. For fun, especially jewelry, I love shopping vintage. I am a real mix and match girl. BSM: What are your personal mommy must-haves? AW: Jeans, Cole Haan aviator sunglasses, Orla Kiely totes, iPhone, and a great blue blazer. BSM: What is one of the most important lessons you have learned as a businesswoman? As a mom? AW: As a businesswoman, like everyone says, it takes longer and is harder than your first plans.
