FROM THE EDITOR IN CHIEF
Summer is the most fabulous time of year. Caftans, sunkissed skin, sunglasses and
floppy beach hats reminiscent of the gorgeous Brigitte Bardot. It’s such a glamorous season and this issue is packed with our chic picks for your stylish summer. If our sunny yellow cover with Ali Landry and her children, Estela and Marcelo, didn’t give you the hint, we’re obsessed with bright colors and bold patterns right now. The style watch will show you the best the new season has to offer with nautical looks, the perfect bathing suit, summer activities for your little ones, and of course, the greatest items to match our issue’s color of the moment. We’ve also curated a list of summer-ready shops with the latest in brightly-colored clothing and gear. Destinations like Manhattan’s Estella and Yoya boutiques, Amagansett’s Pink Chicken, and Los Angeles’ The Little Seed. Each bring an element of the season that you won’t want to miss. Whether you prefer a bohemian look or light and airy beach essentials, these shops have everything you need to look chic in the sun. Over the past few months, we’ve been interviewing some great modern, style-loving parents. Take Christiane Lemieux, founder of DwellStudio, who’s just opened her very first retail location in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood. DwellStudio is a favorite of ours for hip baby goods and we were pleased to have the opportunity to speak to the designer herself. As the summer progresses, be sure to follow us on Twitter as we post new tips and inspiration in 140 characters of less. We’re also now on Pinterest! (Yes, we’ve caught the pinning bug) On the Babystyle Magazine website, we’ve added a blog to give you that extra dose of style in between issues. We look forward to sharing the summer with you and we’ll be back in August with our Back to School issue.

STAY COOL, HOT MAMA TIPS FOR STAYING COOL DURING THOSE DREADED DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
by gretta monahan
I
adore the summer season! Sandy beaches, sparkling pools, picnics, clambakes, BBQ parties— what’s not to love? The excessive temps, that’s what! The sun, sea, and pool combined with high heat and humidity can wreak havoc on your beauty

routine. Making sure your kids are protected from the sun during all the fun activities of the season only adds to the challenge of keeping your cool! In this article, I’ll show you how I beat the dog days of summer.
gretta’s picks FOR A
SUPER COOL SUMMER
1.
TAKE THESE RECOMENDATIONS AND FACE THOSE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER HEAD ON (WITHOUT FRIZZ TOO!)
1 YES, YOU CAFTAN
“I rely on my personal collection of chic caftans and tunic dresses to get me through the uber hot days. Worn with metallic sandals and jewelry, the look becomes a high style dress that works for both day and night. The caftan is easy, one piece dressing that allows air to flow, keeping you cool while protected by the sun. I love the Natori line at Neiman Marcus and Tory Burch is literally the tunic queen!”
2 COVER IT UP
2.
“A day at the beach or pool can pose some challenges for the littles. These terry cloth ponchos pull double duty as a towel and cute cover up. They’re easy for kids to put on by themselves and when my son Kai is waterlogged he can snuggle up inside until he dries off. I’m also a big fan of rash guards because they’re way more effective than topical SPF and they look cool to boot! Go for fun styles from Billabong, Hanna Andersson, and Mini Boden.”

SUPER COOL SUMMER cont’d
3 hats off to you
“Hats for the family are a must, especially if they offer UV Protection of 50+! Coolibar offers options for everyone. My pick is the Oceanside Sun Hat for its dramatic wide brim. Just the dose of glamour I need at the beach!” 4 snacks ahoy!
“I never thought I’d be carrying around a cooler, but since becoming a mom I appreciate the value of a chilled juice box and snacks. Haul your supply of kiddie treats and waters in a soft-sided cooler like the Navy Chevron Cooler Tote from Mud Pie or amonogrammed style by Cupcakes and Cartwheels. I also include a travel pack of Yes to Blueberries Brightening Towelettes for a quick and crisp refresher.”
4.
5 ultra cool compress
“When you or your little is feeling over heated one of my favorite tricks is to use a cold compress. Applying a cool, damp cloth to the back of your neck will help to regulate your temperature. Another trick is to run cold water over the inside of your wrists. The water cools the blood 28

3.
1.
“Post shower I like to spritz in Bumble and bumble’s Tea Tree Infused Tonic Lotion for added chill!” 2 goodbye hot tools
5.
“This is the season when most of us say sayonara to our hot tools for hair. To achieve the wet look, apply a thin coat of moisturizing serum like Josie Maran’s Argan Oil Hair Serum then comb hair into the desired style. Smooth a wet look gel into the hair with flat palms then let air dry for a runway worthy summer ‘do.” 3 minty bliss

SASSY CHIC AUTHOR AND MOTHER OF THREE JILL KARGMAN WASN’T SHY TO DISH ON HER PARENTING STYLE AND FAVORITE NYC HOTSPOTS
I
t wasn’t until tenth grade that Jill Kargman first recognized her love of writing, but the rest is history. The mother to Sadie, Ivy, and Fletch has written numerous best-sellers, including Wolves in Chic Clothing and The Ex-Mrs. Hedge Fund, and now she’s at it again with the newly-released The Rockstar in Seat 3A. So, how does the novelist and native New Yorker manage a thriving 34

career with motherhood? “Haphazardly,” she answers. For Kargman, achieving balance between career and motherhood is all about powering through and often on little sleep. “I’m a zombie. It’s a struggle, but I just power through like all working moms.”
Her days often begin with a child in her face demanding breakfast, for her son Fletch, it’s coffee yogurt. After school dropoff and a Soulcycle class, Kargman gets to work before returning to school for pickup. “I crack the wine right at 6,” says the busy writer mom. But it’s her career that allows for her to be at both school dropoff and pickup which her children love. And while “they’d say I’m a writer who sometimes has to go away for work, I kind of like when they miss me.” Kargman is a native New Yorker who cherishes individual bonding time with each child over a meal or an adventure. Some of her favorite places to spend time
with her children in the city include Central Park carousel, the MoMA, the Met, and La Bonne Soupe for fondue. “I also like field trips and adventures like visiting a friend’s house or having a cookout,” says Kargman of her family’s favorite summertime activities.
And with Summer coming, Kargman’s given us tips on where she shops for the latest in kid’s fashions. “Milly, Little Marc Jacobs, Brooks Brothers by Nikki Kule.”

SWEET GENIUS
WITH A DESSERT TABLE DESIGNED BY BAKING, CRAFTING, AND ENTERTAINING EXPERT AMY ATLAS, EVERY EVENT IS A SWEET SUCCESS PHOTO BY ROBERT CAPLIN
36
BABYST YLEM AG . COM
A
fter taking a break from her career as a lawyer to spend time with her children, Amy Atlas tapped into her creative side. The crafter extraordinaire has no formal background in design, but has now become a household name in the creative world of events and entertaining. “I think I have always had a good eye for things, but I didn’t realize how creative I was until the last several years,” recalled Atlas. The mother of two, known as the “Sweets Stylist,” is internationally recognized for creating the stylized dessert bar trend. From a very young age, Atlas was entertaining for friends and family. By the time she reached college, she had perfected her talent for her signature dessert tables. “The inspiration is endless,” said the stylist. “I’ve had unexpected color palettes, beautiful wallpaper design, and even a simple floral arrangement inspire my dessert displays.” Although she does let her creative side guide her displays, Atlas always draws inspiration from her clients to let their individual personalities shine through. As you will find in her new book, Sweet Designs, Atlas has included everything from cupcakes to cotton candy in her dessert displays. Nothing is off limits for this dessert guru. “My favorite candies to use are jelly beans, M&Ms, and malt balls. In terms of sweets, I like to use macarons, cake pops, and cookies.” Inside the beautifully-styled pages of Sweet Designs, you will find over 175 recipes, DIY crafts,
and dessert displays to inspire you to create your own at home. There is no doubt your party will have that “wow” factor when you follow Atlas’ advice. Sweet Designs lays out how to bake it, craft it, and style it to ensure every family celebration and event will be one people will be talking about for months to come. Don’t know where to begin? Not a problem. The desserts guide will walk readers through the
“Sweets Basics,” which includes the best way to melt chocolate, how to work with fondant, how to colorfully accessorize a cake pedestal with fabric, and more howto’s for fabulous designer events. But don’t get too carried away. “Keep [your event] as simple as possible,” Atlas advised us. “The more work you give yourself, the less time you will have with your guests.” Atlas also expressed BABYST YLEM AG . a love of intimate parties as a way to spend quality time with each guest. Sweet Designs offers readers step-by-step instructions for baking and crafting— ways to “grow it up” or “grow it down” to match the formality of the event. Just take it from her— she’s been through every up and down of event planning. “I once had a staff member’s sweater hair get all over cupcakes we were serving,” remembered Atlas. “Lesson learned: staff need to be wearing aprons at all times. Luckily, we had extras of the desserts.” Oftentimes, those up’s and down’s include hectic schedules. Although it changes daily, Atlas gets her children ready for the bus in the morning, then heads out for a quick run, followed by a meeting with her team. After publishing blog posts, a conference call with a producer for an upcoming segment, book tour logistics, client calls, emails, and another meeting with the team, she grabs one son
from the bus and picks up her other son from a playdate. It’s then time to make dinner with the kids, tidy up the house, spend a bit of time with her family, read to her children for bedtime, and finally send a few more emails before falling asleep with the computer still on her lap. She may be a master crafter and baker, but Atlas is also a busy mom of two boys. “I love that I get to help shape two people and see them grow into meaningful members of a community. The hardest part for me is that they are growing up too fast!” While they have differing styles, Atlas told BSM, she enjoys shopping Ralph Lauren for her sons and DVF, Lisa Perry, and Trina Turk for herself. The trio also enjoys crafting together— their favorite things to make including brownies,
cupcakes, and cookies. “All of these items are not only easy to make, but they also have great surface areas to decorate. We make sugar cookies and freeze them for days we feel like cookie decorating.” Juggling her sweet career with motherhood isn’t easy. Atlas
admits the best piece of parenting advice she’s received was to not be so hard on herself. “Be comfortable with the decisions that you make for your family. You’ll know what works for your family so don’t worry about what others around say.”

Huber designed the company as a busy mom, for busy moms. “Knowing that we all lead incredibly busy lives, I wanted to find a way to make homemade baby food easy and achievable for today’s busy parents.” Sage Spoonfuls boasts a timesaving system that only requires parents to spend one hour every two weeks preparing their child’s food. By cooking in bulk and storing the food in Sage Spoonfuls’ adorable portion-sized containers, parents are able to shop their freezer instead of the grocery aisle. “By spending just one hour every two weeks, you are giving your baby the healthiest start to life and helping to prevent picky eating,” said Sage Bears CEO Huber. And while Huber created the company with busy moms in mind, it was her children who continue to provide daily inspiration for Sage Spoonfuls. After the birth of her first son, Royce, the former Passions actress began making homemade baby food due to a void in the market. “I had to improvise and just pieced a system together,” remembered Huber. “I remember labeling food with masking tape and

sharpie pens.” It was then that the idea for Sage Spoonfuls was born. The company got another push forward after the birth of Huber’s second child, Brendan, who was born two months premature and spent six weeks in the NICU; the second-time mother wanted to be the one taking care of him. “I knew I would not go back to work, in the traditional sense, for at least two years and I decided to begin developing my idea for Sage Spoonfuls, because I could work from home.” And when the time came for baby number three, Huber’s daughter Hayden, bed rest at 23 weeks allowed the motivated mother to finish the Sage Spoonfuls book and finalize preparations for the launch. For Huber, three was indeed a magic number. “Royce was the initial inspiration for Sage Spoonfuls, Brendan was the decision to pursue it and Hayden was the catalyst to pull it all together.” Sage Spoonfuls offers moms the tools— an immersion blender, food processor, BPA-free storage jars, labels, stackable storage trays, cookbook, and more— to make a variety of delicious and healthy baby food. Some
of the founder’s favorites include pear and parsnip, black bean and banana, butternut squash and lentils, and the classic sweet potato, chicken and apple.
baby food benefits Making homemade baby food is not just a hobby for the CEO and busy mom of three. There are five main benefits to the practice: 1. Homemade baby food is the most nutritious Store bought baby food, including the organic brands, has a shelf life of about two years. In order to achieve this shelf life, the food needs to be sterilized— accomplished by heating it to very high temperatures to ensure food safety. While sterilization is necessary to achieve shelf life, it kills vitamins, nutrients, taste, color and aroma in the process. In fact, once your baby is seven months old, most ripe fruit can be pureed without BABYST YLEM AG . COM

SAGE STYLE
LIZA TELLS US HOW A SAGE ceo STAYS STYLISH AND SUCCESSFUL Describe your style: During the day, without fail, I’m in sweatpants, flip-flops and a t-shirt. Working from home, I juggle between the kids and work so I like to be as comfortable as possible. But when we go out, I love nothing more than high platform heels and a cute dress. It feels great to get out of the sweatpants every now and then and dress up! Five things you cannot live without: Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in watermelon, Badger Balm Damascus Rose face oil, Dapple cleaning products, my camera and my iPad. Favorite places to shop: I am a huge fan of Old Navy for the kids. I buy almost all of my kids’ clothes there. They’re cute, well-priced and really hold up. For myself, I love Bloomingdales. Tips for looking great on little time: Having a quick five-minute daytime makeup routine is really helpful.

cooking, leaving all of the precious nutrients intact. 2. Homemade baby food is the most economical Depending on the brand, store bought baby food can cost up to three times more than homemade! Not to mention the dollars wasted when you throw away a jar or pouch of half eaten food. The best way to save money on baby food is to make it yourself in large batches and store it in the freezer. One of my favorite examples is butternut squash. A large butternut squash costs about $3.50 and makes 26 ounces of baby food. It would cost about $10 to get the

same amount of from a store bought brand. 3. Homemade baby foods leads to more adventurous eaters Babies do not need to eat bland food. They are far more adventurous eaters if given the opportunity. Commercially-prepared baby food is usually bland in color, taste and texture. 4. Homemade baby food isn’t the “green” choice With commercially-prepared baby food, there is the constant purchasing and discarding of jars, lids, and pouches. About four million babies are born in the US every year. On average, by the time each of those babies turns one, they will have eaten over 600 hundred jars of store bought baby food; that equals about two million tons of baby food packaging waste. Unfortunately, only about 15% gets recycled, leaving the rest to be incinerated or placed in a landfill. 5. Homemade baby food puts you in charge You know where the food came from because

You are also able to expose your baby to the widest variety of flavors. Your baby’s taste buds and palate are developing during her first year of life. InvenTORI, located on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, houses treasures from Spelling’s own personal collection of one-of-a-kind items as well as a variety of antique pieces from across the globe. The store carries items in baby, bath, boudoir, kitchen, patio, and pet, to name a few. And rest assured, if the products are not some of those Spelling has personally picked up at a flea market or yard sale, they are indeed products her family loves and uses. Upon entrance to the home goods haven, it is not hard to notice a sense of Spelling’s style. “As you can tell reflected in the store, I have a passion for antiques,” said Spelling. “I like pieces that have been around and aren’t perfect. They each have a story of their own and I love that.” But it’s not just Spelling who harbors a love for all things vintage— it seems to run in the family. “My kids are a main inspiration for the store,” said the soon-to-be mother of four. “Whatever the kids love, we carry. Stella also helps me pick vintage jewelry and other pieces. She

longtime lover of antique shopping and flea markets, Tori Spelling quickly found herself ready to share her love of vintage finds with the world. It was then that the soon-tobe mother of four and husband Dean McDermott created InvenTORI— a Los Angeles area store the collector fashioned in her namesake as an extension of her home. “I have always loved everything antique—from flea markets to yard sales,” said Spelling. “But my collection simply outgrew our home and storage. So I decided to share my antiques and love of shopping and curate products that our family loves.”

has a great vintage accessory eye.” Spelling’s children— Liam, Stella, and Hattie— adore spending time inside InvenTORI where their mother informs us they could play for hours. “We use everything [InvenTORI] carries, so they love everything.” Although the children’s personal favorite inside the store are the Ambajam baby blankets. “My kids have slept with them since they were babies and call them “biddy”. I wanted to share them with moms everywhere.” And while her children are a large part of the inspiration for the store, Spelling enjoys store shopping at flea markets and admits she is obsessed with perusing yard and estate sales on the weekends. “I also love Etsy and eBay, but mostly use them to browse,” said the vintage maven.
Opening InvenTORI was a task much different than those inside the world of television. “When you film a TV show or write a book, you have to wait months until it comes out to see how it is received. With InvenTORI, we see daily how people respond and what they like. It’s a different creative outlet, but we love it. And it totally helps my shopping addiction because I’m buying for the store,” said Spelling. Her buying habits and personal collection have landed InvenTORI such pieces as gorgeous vintage glass tumblers— perfect for summer entertaining—, a collection of well-worn books, multiple retro scarves, assorted bottles, trunks, briefcases and more. InvenTORI is a gathering place for antique and new, young and old, shabby and chic. The store’s assortment of children’s items is one worth stopping in for, whether or not you’re a lover of antique treasures. venTORI has to offer. But with items in stock for events from playtime to bathtime, we found it hard to choose just a few. There’s an adorable selection of knit stuffed friends from Rich Frog K’nits that your little ones are sure to love. The bunny, pig, and lion are fitted with bright colors that even mom and dad will find hard to resist. And if reading tickles your fancy, InvenTORI stocks a wide variety of children’s titles like Birdie’s Big Girl Shoes— a tale of a budding five-year old fashionista who soon finds that her mother’s stylish stilettos are no match for her beautiful barefoot shoes— and of course, Presenting... Tallulah— a story of a spunky little girl on a mission to discover herself— penned by the store’s own Tori Spelling. For the boys, there’s the usual bags of bugs, pirates, and soldiers, but also a great children’s title called Pickles Please: a Dilly of a Book about a boy named Alec who, as you may have guessed, loves pickles. And aside from carrying the brands we love like DwellStudio, InvenTORI also shelves fuzzy slippers featuring ducks, princesses, superheros, and even aliens. We adore the children’s products found inside InvenTORI and we’re certain you will to. So next time you’re

We love Jenn and Anthony and our newest Inventori member Stephanie,” said Spelling of her InvenTORI team. And there’s no need to worry about stale merchandise. Spelling is constantly on the lookout for more items to place at the store, shopping even weekly for the latest in vintage finds. “We continue to go on amazing antique shopping trips, so we have new things almost weekly. Be sure to check back in [store] and online often.” Ready to shop Tori’s personal collection or browse the store? InvenTORI is located at 13826 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, California. STROLLER STRUT
STRUT YOUR STUFF THIS SUMMER WITH THESE SUPER NEW INLINE STROLLERS FROM PHIL&TEDS
I
f the thought of loading up the car for your family vacation fills you with dread, phil&teds have once again come to the rescue! Stressed out parents will sigh with relief this summer travel season thanks to their superb new inline strollers! phil&teds is a company striving to help parents adapt&survive and avoid being prisoners of the nursery, by making products that allow them to live a dynamic lifestyle with kids in tow. Phil&teds is famous for its invention of the inline stroller that grows with your family and adapts to take one or two children from newborn to 5 years. phil&teds have just launched not one, but two brand new strollers; enter the Dot & Navigator. They’re the guys who introduced us to inline strollers, with the capability of tackling all terrain. Their tagline, adapt & survive, is something all parents have to live by. The
Navigator has features that we’ve not seen before, the primary one being that it’s the first ‘parent facing’ all terrain. In true phil&teds style, the Navigator can expand with your family, as does the Dot. The double kit allows the Navigator to make light work of transporting two children across all terrains. Adventures have never been so accessible, even with two little ones in tow! Then, if tiredness should take over, both seats can recline for some serious snoozing. phil&teds are releasing the Navigator in black with a choice of four colour packs; sky, golden kiwi, cherry and black – really mixing up their existing color range. Some beautiful clashes can be achieved by mixing and matching seat liner and canopy colors. Now let’s talk about the Dot— named for its compact, slimline, inline, all terrain design. The Dot is a downsized version of the phil&teds explorer, in fact it’s 15% smaller. It has all the features of the Explorer model. However don’t confuse less size with less comfort or less ability. It has a full sized seat and can tackle all sorts of terrain, it has a one-handed fastfold and one-handed recline control. It has the same new tail-free harness as the Navigator, ventilated seat and is available in Apple, Flint, and Chilli flavors. Both strollers will be available in late July 2012. phil&teds products are created by parents for parents who wish to continue their active, dynamic lifestyle with kids. The uniquely innovative, adaptable & multi functional products allow parents to retain their sense of self by making everyday life & travelling easier for themselves & their children. philandteds.com

Kelly Rutherford has played a multitude of roles on-screen and yet we sat down to discuss her most important role as real-life mother. Although she insists that her handbag is full of telling items of her number one job as mom to children Hermes, 5 1/2, and Helena, 3—baby wipes, random toys, snacks, and learning apps on her phone—Rutherford is also busy playing philanthropist, environmentalist, and advocate who values an organic and green lifestyle for her family in New York— all the while maintaining an ultra chic exterior. Since becoming a mother five years ago, Rutherford notes she’s learned to listen most of all. “[Parenting] is new every day. I learn new levels of patience and kindness, and levels of love I never knew possible.” And while there may be little downtime in this busy star’s schedule, when the opportunity arises for Mommy Time, Rutherford most enjoys “sleep and getting pampered.” Hermes and Helena are lucky to have such a fabulous mother who enjoys shopping for the trendy tots at such places as Bonpoint, J.Crew, Flora and Henry, and Olive Juice. The comedy of her two children helps her manage the daily grind— “They say funny things every day”— but Rutherford advises other moms

This July, Gossip Girl is set to film its sixth and final season. Rutherford states she will miss “the great writing, the sense of family, and being a part of something people love.” Her character, Lily Van der Woodsen, is not dissimilar from herself when it comes to style. “I think [Lily] has a heightened sense of my own style. I have two little kids, her’s are grown, and she has much bigger closets than I do!”

According to Rutherford, both herself and her character Lily Van der Woodsen are “figuring it out as mothers and in [their] relationships,” she tells BSM. “We both also love fashion.” Gossip Girl, which airs on the CW network, has given Rutherford a chance to play a character she loves and work with a great cast— which includes the likes of young stars Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford, and Penn Badgley. The final season is scheduled to air this Fall.

MOTHER HEN
FOUNDER AND CREATOR OF HATCH COLLECTION, ARIANE GOLDMAN CREATED A CLOTHING LINE INSPIRED BY A GROUP OF STYLE-SAVVY MOMS-TO-BE
G
reat style during pregnancy is right up there on the list next to bottles, swaddling blankets, and the infamous crib. That is why Ariane Goldman, new mom and founder of twobirds Bridesmaid, created HATCH in 2011 in response to a group of style-savvy expectant mothers you’d never seen in any ordinary maternity section. Every well-dressed woman knows to invest timeless pieces that will last— a tailored pant, the crisp white shirt, the little black (or for summer, little

white) dress. Goldman understood there was just no reason to buy a dress or blouse to wear only for nine months. And so, HATCH was conceived as a collection of chic and flattering wardrobe essentials women can wear before, during, and after pregnancy, boasts the company’s website. HATCH is not just a new maternity or womenswear line, it’s “your new ultimate goto destination for that adaptable but chic dress you’ve been searching for forever, super-cool
street style inspiration, and advice for women who just happen to have a tummy that won’t quit.” During her first pregnancy, Goldman became frustrated to find the market lacking pieces that could be used beyond nine months. The designer couldn’t believe how little was available for chic women looking to invest in timeless pieces— a shirt dress, button-down blouse, and jumper— that would accomdate and celebrate their growing bellies. “Everything was either frumpy or disposable and I found that no one was speaking to women who still wanted to feel stylish during pregnancy,” the designer told BSM. Goldman created HATCH as a collection of 14 key pieces for the style-conscious pregnant woman. The pieces are classic and the silhouettes smart, designed to fit every shape, build, and size. HATCH makes a day at the beach, dinner with friends, and even running errands a chic event. There are pieces for all occasions and most importantly, they will take you into the next, pregnant or not.

If you had to pick one Summer essential from the current HATCH collection, what would it be? I’m loving the slouch dress. In silk, it’s perfect for a night out. In jersey, it’s amazing for work and segue in to dinner out with friends. Who’s your style icon? I love old Halston pieces and think their vintage dresses are just amazing. I love Angelica Houston in the 70s and think Rachel Zoe’s new collection is quite great. Name five items you cannot live without during the Summer season. Rodin lip balm, my heather grey jersey HATCH soiree dress, my vintage denim Ralph Lauren button down, my Monique Pean new aqua opaline ring, and my Loefller Randall heels. What is your go-to ensemble? I’m always wearing dresses as they are so easy to throw on and be done. I like long dresses so often I’m wearing a long HATCH dress.
HATCH GIVES BACK A woman dies every 90 seconds from complications of pregnancy— 90% of these deaths are preventable. HATCH is a proud supporter of the Every Mother Counts campaign, founded by Christy Turlington Burns, and is committed to raising awareness about global maternal mortality. For every purchase made, HATCH will donate $5 to help decrease the infant and maternal mortality rate across the world.

MOM OF ALL TRADES FOR THIS FORMER MISS USA, ACTRESS AND TV HOST, NEW MOTHER OF TWO IS HER MOST PRIZED TITLE BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOGRAPHY BY M DESIGN
F
ormer Miss USA, model, actress, and TV host Ali Landry has just taken on another role— mother of two to Estela and Marcelo. Landry is also the founder of Spokesmoms, a product review platform for mothers, in addition to starring and executive producing TV Guide Network’s Hollywood Girls Night. In this Babystyle Magazine exclusive, we caught up with our cover girl to talk everything mommy.
The family dynamics have also changed. Things are more hectic now, but it has forced me to be more organized which is a good thing.
What does being a mother mean to you? What do you love most about being a mom? ALI LANDRY: Being a mother is the most important job I will ever have. It is the the ultimate responsibility. I hope that my children will always know how much I love them and that I will do anything to protect their well being. I pray everyday for the strength, courage and knowledge to guide them down the right path in their lives. How has your life changed since having marcelo? Are things different now that you’re a mother of two? ALI LANDRY: I had no idea how much having a little boy would affect my life. It is absolutely true about the bond of a mother and her son. I felt that connection the day he was born and it has only grown since then. I’m so madly in love with him. BABYST YLEM AG . COM

Describe your style as a mom. What can we find you wearing most often? What pieces do you reach for? ALI LANDRY: I would like to think of my mom style as casual chic. In the summer, I’m mostly in maxi dresses with a great statement piece of jewelry. I also like to wear chinos rolled up a bit with a tee shirt and gladiator sandals. How would you describe Estela’s style? What is her go-to outfit or favorite look to sport? ALI LANDRY: Estela’s style is very feminine. She insists on wearing dresses 24/7. I only just persuaded her to wear a pair of jeans and shorts this past month. Her favorite go-to outfit when we are hanging around the house is, hands down, a princess dress. What are your top five summer essentials? ALI LANDRY: Mario Badescu Rose Spritzer, Renee Rouleau sunscreen, Louis Vuitton tote bag, Kindle Fire, a fab pair of sunglasses (I usually alternate between 5 pairs), and my Xen-Tan self tanner. What is your favorite way to spend a summer day with your children? ALI LANDRY: Now that Estela has learned how to swim, our favorite summer day would be spending time by the pool and barbecuing. Let’s talk business. What current projects are you excited to talk about? ALI LANDRY: There is so much going on these days that it’s a bit hard for me to keep track of everything. I have a film called Little Boy that will be coming out this winter. My good friend Alison Sweeney and I are executive producing our own show called Hollywood Girls Night on TV Guide Network. I’m also very active in the mom

KELLY AND THE CITY
KELLY FLORIO KASOUF WRITES ADVENTURES FOR HER YOUNG CHARACTER SOPHIE AND AS A MOM, SHE OFTEN EMBARKS ON SOME OF HER OWN
T
he daughter of longtime Conde Nast publisher Steve Florio, Kelly Florio Kasouf used her imagination to tell the story of a little girl’s adventures in the company’s four fictional offices in her children’s book, The Super Adventures of Sophie and the City.
96
BABYST YLEM AG . COM
After her father passed away, Kasouf ’s motivation to tell the story soared, despite not always being the strongest writer. Writing the book was something she needed to do for her own children as a way for them to learn about their family history and the man— Kasouf ’s father— whom they were never able to meet. It was by living in the publishing world that the author was able to learn about writing, design, and marketing through osmosis, by simply consuming information she picked up around the subjects. According to the author, “Sophie is a little girl who isn’t afraid of getting dirty. From fashion to history to architecture and music, Sophie finds something interesting in every subject.” The character is a combination of all of the women in Kasouf ’s family. “My mother, the viking and crazy wild hair, the name Sophie is my grandmother’s, and the freckles are mine,” said the author. “I was not raised on princess stories and I didn’t want to tell one here either.” Sophie was meant to feel empowered by the world around her, to explore and learn through every experience even if that means a few scrapes on the knees— traits of her creator Kasouf that were undoubtedly passed down from ink to paper.
BABYSTYLE LOVES
Kasouf was raised on the North Shore of Long Island and included partial experiences of her own life in the stories of Sophie. Like her character, she enjoys discovering and interacting with her city, visiting the Museum of Moving Image, Battery Park, and the Union Square Markets often. Also like her younger counterpart, Kasouf appreciates the meaning of great style; one of her personal favorites is designer Stella McCartney. “[Stella]is like my superwoman attire. If I go into a meeting wearing Stella, I know I’m walking out with a collaboration. If it’s a lunch with the girls, it’s Marc Jacobs. He’s so tongue-in-cheek and amazingly hilarious with his prints and design. If it’s running around with the nuggets, it’s Theory. If I want something really special, like an Ossie Clark, it’s off to Frock I go. A vintage Valentino will go a long way as well for meetings, events, and dinners with Dave.” For her children— a brood of messy, avid changers she told BSM— Kasouf enjoys shopping DVF for GapKids, Zara, H&M, Lindsey Berns, Stella McCartney, and Oscar de la Renta. If you loved the first volume of The Super Adventures of Sophie and the City, you’re bound to love the next in the spunky little girl’s life. In the upcoming book, Sophie travels back to the 1920’s and meets iconic figures along the way. “But it is her trip to Ellis Island where she meets her greatgreat-grandmother that teaches her the true meaning of family and determination,” the author said of her upcoming project. The next edition of stories from Sophie will be available this holiday season.
STYLE AUTHORITY style tips and must-haves from the creator of sophie Who is your style icon? If Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin had a baby, that would be my style icon. What’s your go-to piece of summer clothing? Lace shorts. What are your top five summer essentials? Natalie Martin Maxi Dress, Basta Surf bathing suit, Cole Haan kelly green thongs, vintage Ray Bans, J.Crew panama hat, Nars orgasm face tint. If you could give your children one piece of style advice, what would it be? Don’t follow your friends advice. 9 times out of 10, they don’t know what they are talking about. If you can jump around, be silly and enjoy yourself in it, then it’s probably a good choice. BABYST YLEM AG . COM

SINCE SHE FOUNDED DWELLSTUDIO IN 1999, CHRISTIANE LEMIEUX HAS ALWAYS DREAMED OF OPENING A RETAIL LOCATION
H
ailing from Ottawa, Christiane Lemieux moved to New York in 1994 to attend the Parsons School of Design. The designer recognized a void in the home design world and soon founded a collection of bold, innovative home goods under the name DwellStudio. “No one at the time was designing for urban families who are design savvy and really appreciate style and great quality,” Lemieux told BSM. DwellStudio was originally started in 1999 as a textile design studio for baby and home. However, the creative company has since expanded into furniture, dining collections, decorative accessories, artwork and more. “Our approach to design is what sets us apart,” said the founder. “We love to layer the room with a mix vintage and modern, hard and soft lines and pieces that mix luxe materials like brass and silk with modern accents. Our store DwellStudio has opened its first retail shop on Wooster Street in NYC’s SoHo

at 77 Wooster illustrates this design philosophy—you can come to our store and find all of the most well-known DwellStudio bedding patterns— our Draper Stripe duvet sets or Peacock Citrine— our line of fully customizable furniture and our modern upholstery fabrics, but you’ll also find all kinds of vintage pieces sourced from all over the world. When people come to our store they have this moment of discovery—they can see how it’s possible to incorporate personal pieces layered with our items into their home. The result is a truly soulful, personal space.” While the company may be over a decade old, the store at 77 Wooster is anything but. The space in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood just opened its doors as DwellStudio’s first-ever retail location. 77 Wooster displays all of your favorite DwellStudio pieces and a few vintage finds curated by the brand’s founder and creative director Lemieux. It’s the newest home design hot spot, decorated beautifully with the brand’s own furnishings, and it’s waiting for you to step inside. BABYST YLEM AG . COM

DWELL STUDIO FAVES CHRISTIANE LEMIEUX GIVES US HER PICKS FROM HER CHIC COLLECTION
1 In addition to acting as DwellStudio’s founder and creative director, Lemieux is also a mother of two. As longtime customers of DwellStudio, we couldn’t wait to catch up with the designer to discuss style secrets. How would you describe your personal style? How is that reflected in both your wardrobe and home? It all comes together as a kind of minimal, modern luxe. New York really inspires me, but I love the old world details and colors of Northern Euro-
pean cities, especially the way they use greys and high-lacquer black. It’s muted but dramatic at the same time. I tend to wear a lot of black and mix in greys and browns and whites, mixing warm and cools tones makes for a sophisticated contrast. I love basics with a luxe twist—like intricate stitching or gold accents. How would you describe your children and their style? How is that reflected in their wardrobes and personal spaces? They are very involved in their personal spaces – their wardrobes are more dictated by me and what I pick up along the way as I travel. I love to search for small brands. I have found great pieces from Stockholm to Saigon. Their bedrooms are covered in the things they love at that moment, which is what a kids’ space should be. It should be a haven for their personal style and current hobbies. Where is your favorite destination to travel with your kids? Why? Paris— the city is magical for kids and adults alike.
Hooded towels. My kids live in our hooded towels during the summer months— they love to wrap up in them after hopping out of the pool or ocean. Not only are they super soft and cozy, but they’re available in several patterns that are chic and playful.
2
Travel accessories. I love our whole line of travel accessories for baby and kids— the bold colors and shapes are perfect for summer adventures. Our Madison Diaper bag in the Dots pattern is such a chic carryall, plus it can easily transition from a diaper bag to a weekend tote. Having items with longevity in terms of style and durability is so important when buying for baby.
3
Bold accents. Our papier-mâché animal heads are another favorite of mine. They’re handmade and my kids adore them— they have all of them in their rooms. I love that they give the kids’ room an element of visual interest— it’s a little tribal and little playful. BABYST YLEM AG . COM

Describe a day in your life as both Creative Director of DwellStudio and as a mom. No two days are the same. I like to stay very involved in every aspect of the business— from marketing strategies to design reviews to sales meetings to social media. Some days I’m at the store styling photoshoots, and other days I’m bouncing around the city from meeting to meeting. It certainly helps that our new flagship store, the office and my home are all within a three-block radius of each other. It makes it easy for me to jump around. I always try to take my kids to school and then grab a green juice or coffee and head to the studio. The push and pull between trying to be the best in my work life and the best mother is crazy. I’m constantly working to find the balance. What inspires you most as Creative Director at DwellStudio? Where do you find inspiration? I find inspiration everywhere--from my walk through Soho to the Studio in the mornings to browsing my daily newspapers to looking through images on Pinterest. I’m really motivated by the next steps of the growing the company. I like challenging myself to find new ways of expanding DwellStudio, and asking: “How can I make this better? How can I push the marketplace in terms of design? Where are we going next?” I love discovering and learning new things about design and business.
What are your tips for looking and feeling great as a mom? Do you have any simple tips to great style? Eating as healthy as possible helps a lot— I try to have foods that are locally sourced and in-season. I try to stay away from sugar and fried foods too. I tend to keep my day-to-day style fairly basic. I’m in blacks, greys and whites a lot— it makes the morning rush out the door much easier when I have pieces that can pair well together in many ways. I keep my hair long which makes styling easy. You can always wear a ponytail. Summer schedules can be hectic and leave little time for home design. With these simple steps from HGTV’s Home by Novogratz designer duo Robert and Cortney Novogratz, great style doesn’t have to cost alot of time or money. 1. For a fun and inexpensive centerpiece, spray paint things from nature in bright colors and display alone or put in a bowl, jar or vase. We’ve done rocks, pine cones and even sticks!

The Novogratz family country house
2. Outdoor curtains can really make a house feel like a home and give it that extra touch for the summer. We did bright yellow striped ones for our country house. 3. Tapestries don’t have to be just for the indoors. When entertaining outdoors, lay tapestries on the lawn for a comfy and cozy outdoor look. Perfect for any summer party!
6. To warm up an outdoor space and create a whimsical, magical experience, hang rustic antique chandeliers from trees. 7. For a great outdoor lighting idea take driftwood and drill holes in it. Then place votive candles in holes, and attach wire to each end. Hang, light and enjoy!
4. You can create a great outdoor design feature by making a wreath out of twine. String party lights on it for a fun summer look. 5. When designing for summer, fresh flowers are a must. Display them creatively—for a fiesta, use a colorful mexican can instead of a vase. Fresh flowers will brighten up any space

Along with three others, these chic mamas joined hands to create Gilt Groupe in 2007
The two would often sneak out in the afternoon to peruse the sales, harboring a love for high-end fashion. But there was one element of the designer discount events that was anything but exciting to the two budding business women: the dreaded long lines. Putting their heads together, they brainstormed a more efficient way to shop the sample sales and thus, the idea for Gilt Groupe was born. Gilt Groupe has since becoming the leading website for consumers to shop curated styles, goods and services, all at insider pricing. Gilt Groupe first launched by spreading the word of the innovative new website to style lovers across the country. And after convincing some of the best designer brands to come on board, the website was ready for action. In their new book, By Invitation Only, Maybank and Wilson remember their first day in business: “Our Zac Posen sale was a huge success. Roughly half the orders went to New York, 17 percent to California, 10 percent to Massachusetts, 6 percent to New Jersey, and the rest to Maine, Alabama, Missouri, South

Carolina, and Illinois. At least five of the orders went to Alexandra’s personal friends, and each time she saw one trickle in over the screen, she thought, Thank you. But despite the fact that we were located in the fashion capital of the country, we’d already gone viral and national, thanks to the power of the Internet, reaching customers we didn’t know personally. We would have been thrilled to make three hundred dollars, so we were beyond elated.” Let’s take it from the top. Where did the idea for Gilt Groupe come from? We joined forces with our cofounders to bring the excitement and thrill of a New York sample sale to fashionistas across the country by providing online access to members by invitation only. We drew inspiration from our past time of sneaking out of work to attend friends and family sample sales in Manhattan.
Gilt Groupe grants users access to top designers at up to 60% off retail.
