is a performer, a businesswoman, a vintage style lover and most importantly, a mom to daughter Rainbow Aurora. We took a peek inside her handbag in search of that one item that helps every mom pull together a look on little time. So, what did we find? A tube of MAC red lipstick in Ruby Woo that “dresses up your face instantly in case you are caught without makeup,” says Holly. And in keeping with her fun, spunky style, this mom of one’s bag also holds: a polka-dotted wallet, cat eye sunglasses, her iPhone, chocolate covered almonds (“In case I get hungry!”), Starbucks After Coffee Gum and Rosebud Salve (“It’s the only lip balm I like!). FROM THE EDITOR

Hey, parents— Follow us on the web! Be sure to follow us on Twitter @theminimagazine, on Facebook (facebook. com/minimagnow) and pin with us on Pinterest (pinterest.com/theminimag).

Fall is here again! Changing landscapes, beautiful colors, hot cider, apple orchards, leaf pile jumping (of course!), cozy sweaters and brand-new boots— what’s not to love about this cool weather season? Ever since I was small, I have associated fall with the excitement of new school supplies and new ensembles to rock in your new classroom. You’ll find much of that in this issue as we explore seasonal style staples for the kids and monkey around in playful editorials debuting our new school looks. Fall is also the perfect time for parents to hit reset. We’re sharing the stories of inspiring moms to get you in gear— parents who juggle their own companies with drop-off and soccer and still make it home in time for bedtime books. Trust us, it can happen! This issue has something to take away on every page and I’m absolutely giddy to have Holly Madison join us as our cover mom! She shared her own Mom Juggle with Mini and we hope you enjoy the peek inside her glamorous life. Here’s to cool temps, cool kids and many, many jumps inside crunchy leaf piles!

I’d love to hear from you. Send me an email kate@mini-magazine.com or tweet me @minimagkate to share suggestions, thoughts, and ideas.

MINI

MOMSPIRAT ION THIS MOM OF TWO WAS RECENTLY

named one of the world’s best dressed women, runs a successful fashion brand that maintains the chic factor collection after collection and still makes time to head back to her roots on her family’s ranch, surrounded by horses and cattle.

GABRIELA PEREZUTTI Mother to twins Mia and Olivia, Founder and Designer, Candela NYC

54

M I N I f a l l ‘14

INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF GABRIELA PEREZUTTI

Talk to us about your inspiration for Candela. What inspired you to create the clothing line and where do you continue to find inspiration?

MINI |

My upbringing in Uruguay and on the ranch always inspired me, even if it is not in a conscious way. There is a rustic element that is in all the collections that is rooted in the land I come from. GABRIELA PEREZUTTI |

Growing up on your family’s ranch, have you passed down your love of horses to your daughters?

I love that they have such diversity in New York; I think that makes the children more open and [unintimidated]. I think being in nature is something they miss and the freedom of movement in open spaces, but overall, I think I will manage to get the best of both worlds for them. GP |

You’re raising your girls in Manhattan— what is your favorite aspect of parenting in the city?

MINI |

MINI |

Yes, living in New York is a bit difficult, but I try to take them to my ranch at least once a year. One of my daughters, Mia, realized after seeing all the females in my family on horses—through pictures in the house— and she said, “I guess I will have to be good at riding.”

Running such a successful fashion empire and managing two little ones, how do you make it all work? What are your secrets? GP |

GP |

You’re raising your girls in Manhattan— what is your favorite aspect of parenting in the city?

MINI |

I think behind any success there is a great team— nobody does it alone. My husband is great in the morning— he helps get out the door to take them to school; he is very hands-on. It’s always a challenge managing [your] personal and professional life, especially when it’s your own company. I am trying to learn how to manage stress through acupuncture, meditation and reflexology... or just putting [my] legs up for a few minutes. GP |

MOM 101 Gabriela Perezutti shares a peek inside her fashionable world

What do you think is the perfect fall ensemble for both moms and kids?

MINI |

style changed since you became a mom? I feel I have become more feminine in my style since I am the mother of two girls. I am in heels more than I used to be. I really don’t spend a lot of time in figuring out what I am going to wear as I have to be out of the door so early in the morning— a little bit is left to chance! GP |

For [moms], I am obsessed with our Austin Overthe-knee Boot for fall. I would wear it with one of our dresses and our Ashton chunky knit coat sweater. For kids, I love what my daughters wear: a pretty, girly dress with short booties and a petit coat. GP |

AU S T I N B O O T Gabriela’s shoe choice for fall is the Candela Austin boot.

You have such great style, we’re certain that has carried over into your home. What went into designing your spaces?

MINI |

What has been your greatest joy of motherhood? What has been the greatest struggle?

MINI |

The greatest joy of motherhood is being inspired by my children. I feel so honored to be the mother of my daughters; I think they are incredible little humans. The most challenging part is feeling responsible for the world that we are leaving to them. I am really struggling with the reality of climate change and how, as a species, we manage to affect the earth in such an intense way. I worry about it, but try to address the choices we can make for it to be different. GP |

I do notice that guests relax when they are [in my] home and it is conducive to long conversations. I like my home to have a serene atmosphere without necessary being minimalist. I do love that every object, painting or photograph has a meaning; everything needs to feel personal and comfortable. GP |

AMANDA MAX

Mini takes SoulCycle for a spin with motivating instructor mom Amanda Max. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOS COURTESY OF SOULCYCLE

Give us the rundown of a typical SC class? What can we expect? AMANDA MAX | SoulCycle is what you take away from it so it’s hard to put it into words. It’s a high intensity cardio class that will clear your mind and make you sweat like crazy. It is the absolute best way to strengthen your mind and body. I have MINI |

74

never found that in anything else I’ve tried. MINI | Why is SC a great fitness class to start for parents? AMANDA MAX | I started riding after my second son was born just to get healthy and fit, but what I didn’t expect was how it would change me emotionally. It is so hard to find time to do anything when you

have kids. Class is only 45 minutes, but you achieve so much in that short time. It’s not only a way to stay fit, but it’s such an emotional release. I find it helps me remain calm and interact with my kids in a much more productive manner. What do you think sets SC apart from other spin studios?

MINI |

There’s a reason it’s called “SoulCycle.” The emotional side to class is so important and definitley unique. Allowing the physical challenge to combine with an intellectual and emotional moment is really powerful.

AMANDA MAX |

What should a Mini Mom or Dad bring to their first class?

MINI |

Courage and determination.

AMANDA MAX |

What is your favorite SoulCycle move?

MINI |

AMANDA MAX |

Double tapback.

We know how busy life can get with running a business and keeping up with the kids! What do you think are the keys to keeping all of the plates spinning?

MINI |

I have to admit, I am constantly trying to keep up with everything from classes, to kids school, to just getting daily errands done— and it’s hard. I remind myself that there is only so much that can be achieved and I really try not to be too hard on myself. Once you let go of the idea of “perfection,” it’s actually easier to prioritize. Choose one to two tasks a day and do them, rather than trying to do 800 things. Be realistic.

AMANDA MAX |

You say you “used to have a day job before you created your life”— what do you love most about your life now?

MINI |

I never feel like I have to “go to work” anymore. SoulCycle allows me to spend time doing what I absolutely love.

AMANDA MAX |

Now that it’s fall, how do you plan to stay active yourself and with your kids?

MINI |

I love planning fun fall events with the kids! We’re New Yorkers— there are so many great things to do in and around this city. My family and I take Saturdays to be adventurous. We’ll drive to go apple picking upstate, or a train out to Coney Island, rent bikes on Governors Island. There are endless ways to stay moving in NYC! AMANDA MAX |

You’ve been very busy over the past year! You welcomed your first child, Rainbow, got married and even opened your very own spot inside Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas! How has being a mom changed your approach to both your schedule and your career?

MINI |

It has made me seek balance. I can’t do as much as I used to— especially now that Rainbow is in the toddler phase! I have to be very diligent about getting everything done during hours where I have some help with Rainbow. I’ve been persuing more behind-the-scenes things too— things that will have a longer shelf life for me.

HOLLY MADISON |

We are so in love with the name Rainbow Aurora! Tell us how you arrived at the name for your first little Mini.

MINI |

picked Aurora because [she is] my favorite Disney princess, but also because it is a word I heard a lot in Alaska where I grew up. You’ve expressed a love of Disney characters and even got married at Disneyland! How are you sharing the Disney love with your daughter? Can we find any Disney glimpses in her room, in her wardrobe?

MINI |

Rainbow has been to the park many times since she was around while I was planning the wedding, but has only recently been old enough to get into it. We took her to Disneyland Paris over the summer, when she was 16 months old, and she loved it! [Also], her nursery in Las Vegas is Alice in Wonderland themed— I painted the flowers on the walls myself.

HOLLY MADISON |

Since you split your time between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, which feels more like home to you?

MINI |

A girl I went to school with was named Rainbow and I was always so jealous of that name! I never thought of it as a potential baby name until I was pregnant, though. It just popped into my head one day as if it wasthe perfect name for the baby! I

Time management. Babies and toddlers simply demand all of your time. If I am alone with my daughter, I just have to accept that I am not going to get anything accomplished besides being a mom.

HOLLY MADISON |

MINI |

Your wardrobe is just as lavish as your lifestyle! What are your style staples and what were they during your pregnancy?

Now, my staples are vintage-style day dresses and cardigans. I love the style of January Jones’ character in early Mad Men.

I got to dress for fall and winter when I had a bump. My staples were black leggings and long, stretchy sweaters.

What can we find Rainbow wearing most often?

I love pretty dresses, but nothing too stiff or difficult to put on. Anything that looks like a flowy, hippie dress for a toddler is a favorite. We also love owls, so she has a lot of owl motif in her wardrobe.

HOLLY MADISON |

What went into designing Rainbow’s nursery?

MINI |

I love themes and I picked Alice in Wonderland because it’s a story my husband and I both love. I gave it a chess board tile floor and painted a mural of the talking flowers on the wall. The curtains and crib set are blue and white, like Alice’s dress and the artwork on the walls is Alice-inspired. We even have the “talking” doorknobs with the face on her doors.

Belle from Beauty and the Beast because I am a bookworm. If I have time at the end of the day to read, I am happy.

BUMP ST YLE

Behind Seraphine— the popular maternity brand that’s no stranger to the Kate Middleton Effect. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOS COURTESY OF SERAPHINE

CENTER Cecile Reinaud is the founder of brand Seraphine, a fave of Kate Middleton.

You’ve had great success dressing moms-to-be like Kate Middleton! What do you think it is about your brand that draws such a chic crowd? CECILE REINAUD | I think we strike just the right balance between comfort and style. We pay very close attention to the cuts and fabrics we use to ensure a flattering fit, MINI |

88

M I N I f a l l ‘14

and our styles are influenced by the latest trends. MINI | What are the essentials moms who’ve just found out they’re expecting should purchase? CECILE REINAUD | I always suggest that your first purchase should be a good pair of maternity jeans and a few flattering dresses

that help you to feel feminine and make your new curves look sexy. You’ll only need maternity tops in your second trimester, so lookout for ones that can later convert into good nursing options. Remember that you’re likely to wear your maternity clothes a good few weeks after the birth before you get back into your shape. Even The Duchess of Cambridge was wearing our maternity dresses six weeks after giving birth for her first official family picture, so think about versatility and choose maternity clothes that can adapt to every stage. Dressing the bump can be a somewhat controversial topic. What are your tips to help a woman look her best while expecting?

MINI |

Every woman has her own unique way of dressing and in my experience, it’s the women who don’t compromise their signature style who really get it right when it comes to maternity fashion. I’m a big believer in flaunting your new curves! Hiding your bump in baggy clothes can often make you look bigger than you are.

CECILE REINAUD |

We’re loving the cozy sweaters and denim coming from Seraphine this fall! What do you think is the perfect fall ensemble?

MINI |

The Wool and Cashmere Maternity Wrap Cardigan in black is one of my favorite pieces this season. I’d pair it with skinny jeans and a fitted top for a feminine layered look. It’s an effortless style that works well for the changeable weather.

CECILE REINAUD |

How do you manage motherhood with such a booming brand?

MINI |

Juggling a challenging career and two young children is not a walk in the park. I am, by nature, a perfectionist so I used to get frustrated about not having enough time. I’ve since learned not to beat myself up too much about not being the perfect textbook mum. My trick is to do a list of ten things I want to achieve in a day, then cross out the least four important ones and accept they just won’t happen today. I aim to feel 100% satisfied when I’ve reached 60% of my goals at home!

CECILE REINAUD |

If you could give your children one piece of style advice, what would it be?

MINI |

My two boys are ten and six, and they do have opinions on what colours they prefer. I think it’s important to let them express their individuality with clothes and not [pressure] them to conform too much to trends at this young age.

You’re the founder of ILY Couture, which we adore! What motivated you to create such a fantastic brand?

MINI |

We started ILY as a wedding hair accessory company. I wanted a hair piece for my wedding and couldn’t find one I liked so I designed and made my own. I had a lot of people asking where it was from so I opened an Etsy store. Soon I realized that wedding customers were typically one-time buyers [and] we decided to expand our target market by including jewelry and apparel.

CHRISTINE ANDREW |

With all of the ensembles you put together on your blog, Hello Fashion, what are your style staples?

I’m a shoe girl, so investing in a good neutral pair of shoes you can wear with multiple outfits but make you feel beautiful each time you put them on. On a day to day basis, I would say a good pair of distressed denim. They are so versatile.

CHRISTINE ANDREW |

You’re also a new mom! Have you seen your style change with motherhood?

CHEWBEADS

Lisa Greenwald is the creative mind behind mom-approved, baby-safe brand, Chewbeads. INTERVIEW BY JOYCE NOVACEK PHOTOS COURTESY OF CHEWBEADS

We love Chewbeads - and know you got the inspiration for the line after having your first son, Benjamin. Can you talk with us about how you made your idea a reality? LISA GREENWALD | I had a J.Crew necklace that had three layers of colorful beads all connected by small metal pegs and rings. Benjamin and just about any other baby MINI |

94

M I N I f a l l ‘14

I ever picked up was enamored with my necklace— they would just touch it and put it in their mouth. I said to myself “someone should come up with a necklace that’s safe for babies to chew” and instead of waiting for someone else to do it, I set out to do it myself. MINI | What was your biggest challenge in

launching Chewbeads?

MINI |

Producing a high quality product with consistency. We originally ordered necklaces with small interval beads in between each bead and after wear-testing them realized that the small beads would get stuck inside the bigger beads. So, we had to scrap our first order and make them without interval beads. The second order was made without interval beads, but it was difficult to control the tension of the strands, and moms complained that their hair was getting caught in between the beads, so we redesigned again.

I do a lot of my household duties online— diapers.com and soap.com are total life savers. If we are running low on paper towels [or] toilet paper, I can order everything online before I leave for work and it’s at our apartment when I get home. Talk about saving a Saturday! I try and get up early to run or work out before anyone else gets up so that when I am home I can focus on my family and Chewbeads.

LG |

It’s so great your husband, Eric, helped co-found Chewbeads. What’s it’s like working with your husband in a professional capacity?

What are your time-saving tips for running a business and a household? How do you make it all work?

LG |

What’s the best advice you have for a mom who is thinking of starting her own business, but isn’t sure that she has the time?

MINI |

MINI |

There is never a dull moment and we certainly have plenty to talk about at the dinner table. But that aside, working with Eric has made Chewbeads possible. I am creative, visionary, and can rank and buy inventory— which is great to start a business, but everything that goes into running a business everyday was beyond my scope. I still work and dedicate my time to Madewell which I love too, so Eric and the team at Chewbeads drive our customer service, sales and fulfillment efforts. LG |

It’s funny because once I had Benjamin I found that I had a little more time at home. I wasn’t running around as much to dinners or the gym so I started thinking about my product. I think you can find time throughout the day and the week to work on a project or idea. Obviously, your kids and family come first, [but] when you have time, use it towards your goal. LG |

What are you excited to dress [your kids] Benjamin and Jordan in this fall?

MINI |

Camo pants, henleys and little puffer vests. LG |

I start every morning with breakfast with the kiddies and end every day with dinner and bath time, but what comes in-between is always different! At the moment, I am working with my husband on a very exciting new business venture so our days are spent around the conference table.
