FROM THE EDITOR

EDITOR’S NOTE

I

BUSY SEASON

t’s funny how quickly I’m ready to jump into fall each year— ready for the hot apple cider drinking, pumpkin picking, orchard hopping, rain boot wearing, leaf pile jumping and cozy snuggling. I was much more eager for the season of “slowing down” to start this time around than I was last, that is until I realized how close we are to the holiday rush! But I don’t think anyone really “slows down,” ever. Do they? With every interview—like those with moms Ashley Williams, Chriselle Lim, Simone LeBlanc and Samantha Wennerstrom featured in this issue—it’s obvious that we’re always go-go-go-ing. I love reading their little tidbits on how they keep all of the plates spinning, whether it be through intense scheduling or simply being present for one thing at a time, be it work or kids. You’ll find some beautiful homes

in this issue too— perfect timing as fall urges us to relax inside more. From bright, open kitchens with the best natural light to bold wallpapered spaces (check out designer Gen Sohr’s home on p. 92!) and soft, tranquil nurseries—I dare you not to want to makeover every room in your home when you’re done swooning over them. And finally, for ideas on what to do with the kids on those chilly fall days that just beg for baking, check out our feature with cover mom Sarah Michelle Gellar and her latest venture in foodcrafting— Foodstirs! I also kind of love the advice she shared for her kids. Enjoy, Mini friends!

Spray Goodbye to Diaper Rash Spray What? From the tried and true ointment to a revolutionary spray, Dr. Smith’s® offers a touch-free spray application of its effective and fast-working formula. Dr. Smith’s Diaper Rash Spray is an innovation in the treatment of diaper rash. • Dr. Smith’s Diaper Rash Spray was designed with safety and ease of use in mind. • The patent pending formulation ensures that the product clings to the skin creating an even layer of protection when sprayed. • The product sprays on easily to create a moisture barrier to treat diaper rash and protect even the most sensitive skin from wetness. • Once it’s sprayed on the affected area, there’s no need to rub it in – just spray it, leave it, and let it work. • The formula won’t cake or run, and the cooling spray helps soothe irritated baby bottoms.

Dr. Smith’s also available in a 2 oz. and 3 oz. ointment.

I had been working as a personal life stylist where the projects focused on my client’s personal clothing tastes and design preferences. I loved connecting with people in this way— finding an object for their home or a gift that was “just the right thing.” Last year, I decided to expand beyond the luxury gifting and offer some of my favorite gifting ideas online, to a broader audience with my gift boxes. Owning my own business, it’s natural for me to be in a 24/7 mindset with all that I have on my plate and am creating. I now prioritize differently as far family, myself and the time for my business. It is about finding the balance of all that matters to me, knowing my intentions and being flexible to shift things as needed. I realize that I cannot approach my hours in the day with the same amount of multi-tasking gusto that I used to have. I have to be more selective, take on less, and maximize where I spend my energy.

DESIGN TO GO Pencil and Paper Co’s Design to Go program offers an online, affordable alternative to interior design.

We’re such huge fans of your design work! Tell us how you would describe your approach to interiors.

MINI |

I think about design very much like a puzzle. Nothing I love more then being dropped into a room full of furniture, art and accessories and figuring out how it works best!

GEN SOHR |

What makes a space a Pencil and Paper Co. signature? What would you say is characteristic of your design projects?

MINI |

We are certainly drawn to a clean, white space and great natural light is always a plus. We really love creating beautiful, family-friendly spaces filled with color and pattern. We aspire to create “Happy Homes.”

GEN SOHR |

How do you tackle designing a sophisticated space that’s also practical?

MINI |

People often ask me how we make white walls work with kids— but I think white walls are actually the most practical! You can magic erase just about anything off of them and they give the impression of a clean, sun-filled space; [white walls] are always a yes in my book. I try and think about fabrics that get better with age. Velvet and a great patterned sofa just seem to look even chicer once they are worn-in. We also have a rule that food stays in the kitchen. Disaster averted!

GEN SOHR |

Many parents may be reluctant to use wallpaper in their kids rooms, but you do it so well! What should Mini readers know about choosing or installing wallpaper?

MINI |

We often use wallpaper in a foyer or powder room, spaces that kids are less likely to be throwing a ball around in. I do think wallpaper can be super fun in a nursery or child’s room,

GEN SOHR |

but then I typically limit it to an accent wall (behind the crib or bed)— something that still allows kids to have fun in the space and not be in fear of damaging the wallpaper.

What are your favorite color combos to use in children’s spaces?

MINI |

I’m consistently drawn to blue and white with pops of red. I also am really loving pink and rich dark green together. I find starting with a pattern you love, whether it is a great piece of art or favorite fabric or even book, can be a fun jumping off point for creating a color palette.

GEN SOHR |

How have you designed your own home to suit your family? What are some of your favorite elements in your own home?

MINI |

We took our unused attic space in our most recent renovation and transformed it into a fun kids zone complete with pink pong table and built-in beds. I love that the kids have a separate space to entertain friends during sleepovers— and that it keeps the noise contained.

GEN SOHR |

T R AV E L L O G Gen Sohr shares her five must-visit, kid-friendly locales in Nashville. 1. Cheekwood Gardens and Museum 2. Bobby’s Dairy Dip 3. Frist Center 4. Afternoon music and dancing at Robert’s Western World 5. Movies or live music at Centennial Park

As a designer and mother of two, how do you maintain that work/life balance?

MINI |

I’m a scheduler. Having a well mapped out day helps me keep my sanity. I’m lucky to run my own business and create my own work schedule. My work day mirrors Oden’s school schedule. After many years working crazy hours in corporate America, I treasure the freedom to be able to pick up my son from school and hear first-hand all the details of his day. Typically, I sneak in my last few hours of work at night.

GEN SOHR |

Kids this fall will bring many school projects and artwork home from school! What would you say are the best ways to display these?

MINI |

DESIGN 101 Gen Sohr shares her best tips for creating a chic space for your Minis. Start with a favorite kids book or piece of art for inspiration. Spaces don’t need to use kid specific furniture. Collect what you love! Arrange furniture in zones. I often position a bed in the corner of the room so there is still space for play. Use unexpected lighting!

I love a gallery wall. My studio space is covered wall to wall with art, much of it treasures the kids have created over the years. I also love the idea of buying inexpensive frames from Ikea or Target to easily make kids art feel even more special.

MINI |

You’re a stylist, editor, digital maven and now a mom! How do you devote time to each one of these areas of your life and remain organized?

I honestly didnt expect myself to have this much fun with motherhood. I knew I was going to adapt to it, but I didn’t know I was going to fall in love with the process.

I have a great support team and there is absolutely no way I’m able to do all the things that I do without them. At home, I have my aunt who helps me take care of Chloe on the days I go to the office. The key thing is to trust the people behind you and allow them to do their job so you can do yours. It’s all about focus and knowing when to check in and out. When I’m at work, I give my 200% and when I’m at home with Chloe, I give her my undivided attention.

MINI |

CHRISELLE LIM |

The recovery period after giving birth. I suffered a bit from Postpartum Depression and that is something I was not prepared for. For the first three months after I gave birth, it was really tough. I found myself crying in the bathroom a lot because I felt overwhelmed and exhausted. My hormones were flying off the walls and I couldn’t control my emotions.

CHRISELLE LIM |

MINI |

The bond that i’ve developed with her. I never knew I had it in me, but whenever I see Chloe I just want to drop everything that I’m doing. It’s also been incredibly rewarding seeing her develop different skills as she gets older. From the day she smiled for the first time, to lifting her head, to now sitting up on her own.

CHRISELLE LIM |

“Hands down, the most flattering pair of bottoms to wear during pregnancy.”

M I N I f a l l ‘15

How do you think your career will change now that you’re a mom?

MINI |

Career wise, I’ve never been happier. We’ve gained a new audience of moms which has inspired us to create more lifestyle content. We started a new series on The Chriselle Factor called Motherhood Mondays where we discuss raw topics that new moms go through. We are still fashion focused, but are sprinkling in more lifestyle content.

CHRISELLE LIM |

BUTTON-UP “I lived in my husband’s button-up [while pregnant]. Wore it with jeans and belted as a dress.”

CUTE FLATS Mom-to-be shoes: “Fancy pointy-toed flats, cool sporty sneakers and cute flat boots.”

What would you say is the greatest aspect of motherhood so far? Is being a mom what you expected it to be?

What would you say is the one thing about motherhood that no one can prepare you for?

As a stylist and fashonista, what advice would you give busy moms who still want to look great on little time?

MINI |

Have a uniform. It’s all about knowing what you look best in and repeating it on those days you don’t have time to think about your outfit. For instance, my go-to outfit when I’m pressed for time is a pair of boyfriend jeans, a loose button-up and a few dainty necklaces.

CHRISELLE LIM |

And now with baby Chloe here, we’re certain you’re loving all of the Mini fashion choices! What are some of your favorite pieces in her wardrobe?

MINI |

I am having so much fun dressing up Chloe! Janie and Jack is my favorite store to shop for [her]. They have the best dresses and special occasion pieces. I also love Milk+Bots for more casual wear.

CHRISELLE LIM |

Tell us how you decided on Chloe’s name.

MINI |

Her full name is Chloe Victoria Chen. We decided to name her Chloe after the niece that I helped raise and absolutely adore. My husband’s father’s name was Victor which is where we got Victoria.

CHRISELLE LIM |

You always look flawless! Can you give us the rundown of your beauty routine?

MINI |

I usually use BB Cream, lip tint that I use as blush, a classic black liner and fill in my brows. Where I spend majority of my time on is my skin— I give myself mini facials every night after Chloe goes to bed.

CHRISELLE LIM |

What do you think your parenting style will be like?

MINI |

I imagine I will be the strict one and my husband to be the fun one.

MARIE-CHANTAL |

How do you manage the chaos of motherhood with running the Marie-Chantal brand and your busy schedule?

MINI |

My family comes first before anything. I’m a great delegator at work and have a fantastic team in the office who I can rely on. I’m also very lucky to love what I do. Who wouldn’t love making kids clothes.

MARIE-CHANTAL |

Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece is the mother of five— Olympia, 19, Constantine, 17, Achileas, 15, Odysseas, 11, and Aristides, 7.

Can you outline a typical day in your life for us?

MINI |

Up at seven making breakfast or something healthy for the children and getting my two youngest, Odysseus and Aristides, ready for school. If I have time, I’ll go spinning before work— I just love spinning and loud music. I normally arrive at the office at 10 and my day is often spent with the team or creatives. We are on tight schedules for the next collection so they keep me on a tight rope. Then home for the kids to get dinner ready; we usually dine out two nights a week. We always spend the weekends in the country— it’s so good to get some fresh air!

MARIE-CHANTAL |

What do you think is the greatest challenge of motherhood?

MINI |

MARIE-CHANTAL |

I try to balance everything

with a calm clear head. I’m a mother of five; the eldest is 19 and the youngest 7, so their needs are very different. It’s important to have a calm understanding of what they need emotionally.

It isn’t easy when a toddler is having a tantrum or a teenager is angry. I try and imagine what my needs were when I was little and how my mother or father could have reacted better to me. That helps me a lot. Kids absorb your energy, so starting with a lot of patience helps to keep everyone happy. How would you define your parenting style? What is most important to you in raising your children?

MINI |

Communication. I think it is really important to keep a healthy dialogue going with my children, so I understand what is going through their heads. Plus, they know that I am always there for them 100%!

MARIE-CHANTAL |

You were born in London and your husband is Greek. What cultural differences in parenting have you noticed? Are there any British traditions you try to maintain?

MINI |

We’re both quite traditional and come from loving families. Both parents have been married for over 50 years! My husband is close to

MARIE-CHANTAL |

his parents and siblings. He maintains a close relationship and so do I. I think this is what has made us close and happy in our marriage and [ultimately] leads to a happy home. As for traditions, we always have meals with our children. I think sitting down as a family is one of the most important ones to maintain. Looking back now to your first days as a parent, what would you tell yourself?

MINI |

I admire first time parents so much! It’s all so new. I was so excited and scared at the same time. [But] with every new baby came a new experience. I would tell myself that I did ok!

MARIE-CHANTAL |

You have five children! What do you love about having a big family?

MINI |

Life with a big family is always an adventure. I love to see life through

MARIE-CHANTAL |

Marie-Chantal’s two flagship stores can be found in London on Walton St and Ledbury Road.

their eyes. Plus, they keep each other company. We just have to know about your beauty secrets! What products do you use on a daily basis?

MINI |

For me, it’s all about my hair. If it looks good, then I’m happy. For my beauty regime, I keep it simple: Wash my face with a good cleanser and moisturize, put on some bronzer and a lip gloss and I’m ready to go. I’ve been a fan of Dr. Lancer from Los Angeles for 15 years. I also drink about 2 liters a day of water and try to eat healthy.

We’re so excited to have you as our fall cover mom! Let’s start by talking about your new company, Foodstirs. What was your inspiration for starting the brand?

MINI |

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

We really noticed a gap between inspiration and execution when it came to baking products. We were also surprised about the ingredients in most of the popular products. Like most people today, we are conscious of what goes into the food we eat and want the best possible options. How is Foodstirs great for parents and kids?

MINI |

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

Foodstirs provides a convenient and better way to unplug, connect and create memorable experiences. You can trust in us that your family will be eating products that taste great and are made with real, premium ingredients free of preservatives, artificial flavors and dyes!

RIGHT Dress: Rebecca Taylor, Booties: ShoeDazzle.

What are some of your favorite foodcrafting kits that Foodstirs offers?

MINI |

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR

That’s like asking me to pick a favorite child. I love the Baker’s Club and knowing that every month a new and inventive kit is delivered right to the doorstep. No scrambling to put together a holiday project last minute! Would you consider yourself a foodie? Where did you learn to cook?

MINI |

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

I have always loved eating food, but making food was not always my forte. Once I had kids and saw their interest in all things cooking, I realized I needed to learn quickly. I have found that we have some of our best times learning together. How do you get your kids involved in the kitchen?

MINI |

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

I think kids always want to do what they see their parents doing and enjoying. It doesn’t take a lot of encouragement to get them excited. My kids love making everything from breakfast to dessert. Foodstirs offers a healthier way to bring families into the kitchen. How do you instill healthy eating habits in your kids?

MINI |

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

I believe that getting kids in the kitchen early and making them part of the process is the key to instilling healthy eating habits. My kids love to try new foods and be part of everything that happens in the kitchen. M I N I f a l l ‘15

Give us an idea of what mealtimes are like in your house.

MINI |

The most important rule in our family is “meal time is family time.” That means no phones or toys at the table, the television is off and we just enjoy our time together. The same goes for meals at a restaurant. I want them to appreciate that time.

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

I always go back to the words I learned from Queen Elsa— Let It Go. I wish I could control everything, but I realize that is not an option. I understand it takes a village and I can’t be afraid to ask for help. I have the most amazing support system of friends and family and I know I can’t be a success without them.

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

Let’s talk parenting! How would you describe your parenting style? Would you say you and your husband are on the same page or do you each play different roles when it comes to parenting?

MINI |

Now that you are embarking on Foodstirs, we’re certain life has gotten a bit busier! How are you balancing your personal ventures with motherhood?

MINI |

I think it’s very important that both parents are on the same page when it comes to parenting. We find alternating “good cop, bad cop” works best.

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

What would you say is the one thing about motherhood that has surprised you most?

MINI |

The amount of love that I am capable of. With every child, your heart just grows.

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

On the flip side, what would you say is the greatest challenge of motherhood?

MINI |

The greatest challenge is lack of control. Knowing you can plan out everything perfectly and inevitably it will all change or go wrong.

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR |

What traits do you think or hope your kids have picked up from both you and your husband?

MINI |

To me, first and foremost, I want to raise kind kids. I want my children to be empathetic to people and the world around them.

After I had my son, Kenya, almost nine years ago, I couldn’t find many homemade baby food recipes or information on how to make kids great eaters from day one— so I started Weelicious. It’s been an amazing journey following readers and my own family to see what they love most.

MINI |

CATHERINE MCCORD |

You have a dedication to using minimal ingredients in your recipes, how did you first start to instill healthy habits in your kids?

MINI |

You recently welcomed a new little one into your family! How is life different now as a mother of three?

MINI |

[It’s] busy, to say the least. She has brought our family endless joy! I’m so lucky to have two older kids to help me out.

CATHERINE MCCORD |

Did you notice any different cravings during this pregnancy? What was different from your previous two? MINI |

With my son, I wanted vegetables for breakfast, with my daughter, salty crackers and with the baby, I had to have fruit and yogurt parfaits and smoothies.

CATHERINE MCCORD |

Making family meals can be a challenge when you’re a new mom! What do you consider the pantry or refrigerator staples that can help ease this dinner shuffle? What should everyone have on hand?

MINI |

Cooked pasta, rice, chicken, eggs, pesto and roasted vegetables are mealtime savers in our home. I recently started an organic mealtime delivery kit for families and we’ve been in the testing stage, so that’s been [helpful] as my kids are obsessed with helping me prepare the recipes.

We are huge fans of LIVLY! Tell us about the idea behind the brand.

MINI |

I started LIVLY after I had my twin girls, Liv and Lilly. They were born premature and were allergic to absolutely everything! My doctor told me about this amazing pima cotton from Peru— it had longer fiber than regular cotton and wouldn’t irritate the skin as much. I could not find any products like that in Scandinavia, so I made my own. I soon realized how soft, longlasting and absolutely amazing the cotton was and boom! There was my business idea.

The fall collection is full of fun prints and colors. What inspires you to create new pieces each season?

MINI |

We always strive to create fun and playful designs that kids are excited to wear! We want our designs to inspire imagination and growth instead of inhibit them with impractical or uncomfortable fabrics. Comfort is always key! BRITTANY PELTZ |

How have your own children or your own personal style influenced LIVLY?

MINI |

The three oldest think they are the designers. The girls are seven now and they know exactly what they want. A trim here, less glitter there and the list goes on and on!

LISA CARROL |

You’ve just relocated to Miami! What are you most looking forward to about living in this sunny locale?

MINI |

The heat! I’m Jamaican and I miss the sun on chilly winter days in Sweden. I love the fact that the kids jump in the pool or in the ocean before going to school. [Plus], I feel like I’m close to everything— Three hours to New York, five hours to Lima, and ten hours to Stockholm!

Lisa and I considered a variety of neighborhoods during our store search and ultimately LIVLY found its home on Reade Street— a quaint and charming block filled with kid-focused businesses. LISA CARROL | My other LIVLY stores are much smaller, so here we really wanted to create more of an experience than a shop. It is 1500 square feet and will be absolutely beautiful! BRITTANY PELTZ |

What went into your decision to bring LIVLY to NYC?

MINI |

It feels the most natural to us. I lived in New York for eight years before relocating to Miami. I came to the US from Sweden to play basketball for Fordham University and fell in love with the city!

LISA CARROL |

Motherhood can be challenging, especially while running a business. How do you manage that work/life balance?

I feel motherhood is a balancing act whether or not you are pursuing a career. I learned this from watching my own mother raise eight children. That said, I feel very lucky that my job allows me to work from home. I am able to pursue my career while still being a present and handson mother to Eva. Having her around me keeps me inspired, grounded and connected to what children really want and need.

I love me some nude tones for fall, mixed in with neon colors. My favorite LISA CARROL |

LIVLY piece for fall is the Lotta Flamingo Dress paired with our ruffled leggings in black and our super cozy powder pink puffer jacket. What do you think every child should have in their wardrobe?

MINI |

One of my favorite pieces is our leather Kai jacket! I already have one stowed away in Eva’s closet until she is big enough to wear it. I think childrenswear can get a bit sloppy when its comes to outerwear and I just love how this piece brings the entire look together! BRITTANY PELTZ |

Our readers may know you from How I Met Your Mother and most recently, The Jim Gaffigan Show. Tell us what it’s been like playing a mom of five on the show and wife to funny dad Gaffigan.

MINI |

I had the best time on this show. I’ve also never worked so in-depth with kids (Ted Moseby and I never got to make any...). I think I got really lucky that the children on our show are fun. The Gaffigans decided to make the show very real since it’s based on their lives and consequently, we have very real kids. If one of them screams during one of my lines, that’s the take they’ll use. Because let’s face it, kids scream over us in real life all the time. It’s some strange combination of method acting and aversion therapy.

ASHLEY WILLIAMS |

will have an impact on your career? ASHLEY WILLIAMS | The Gaffigans are really accommodating and understanding; they know parenting. Times five. Jeannie called dibs for me on my dressing room before any actors got there. It’s enormous, with a whole other backroom where we put a 4Moms play yard and a sound machine for Gus’ naps. He came with me to work probably three to four days a week which was a dream come true. I often got to rehearse with Gus strapped to me. After shooting, I’d hand over my TV baby to her mom and then get to pick up my own. My arms are freakishly strong now! Also, my husband loves taking the morning Gus shift— works for me because I am not a morning person!

What some people “ Educating women as MINI | You’re a new mom may not know they begin parenthood is that you are yourself to your son, Gus! is a true, deep passion also a certified How has motherhood changed you thus far? doula. What of mine. ” sparked your ASHLEY WILLIAMS | I love beinterest in being ing a mom. I’m a walking smile. It’s hard not a birthing coach or where did it all begin? to be when you are around this 25-pound ball of optimism all day long. That’s right, ASHLEY WILLIAMS | I’ve always wanted to Gus already weighs 25 frickin’ pounds. No have a baby. When my siblings and friends started having kids, my husband and I just wonder my back hurts. And then there are weren’t ready yet. I think some part of me little things, like how I’ve never appreciated precious time in the shower more. I’ve never felt like doula work would tide me over. slept less, never laughed more, never had Also, sometimes as an actor, you start to less time for myself, never cried so many think that work is the most important thing. But once I started attending births and happy tears and my house has never been messier. Honestly, I’m pinching myself. seeing women at their strongest and most vulnerable, I realized that acting is a passion Motherhood is awesome. and an art— and sometimes just my job. MINI | How do you anticipate motherhood Auditions became more fun because they MINI |

How did your background as a doula affect your pregnancy?

MINI |

I was a really relaxed pregnant person. I’d spent years researching labor and had come to the conclusion that my body knew best. I didn’t want to live in fear, so I didn’t give myself many restrictions— especially not with food. The most interesting thing was that I couldn’t stand the smell or taste of wine. And I’m a girl who loves a nice glass of red wine. I didn’t recognize myself! I ended up getting anxious when I drank coffee, so I stopped drinking it. I wanted nothing to do with raw fish; the idea of it turned my stomach while pregnant. Oddly, I had no interest in salads which I had a real instinct that I needed. I loved green juice with apple in it, so I had that almost every day instead. Once I hit my second trimester I wanted to move, so I walked five miles a day from week 16 until the day before labor began. It was meditative and the most rewarding physical activity for me because it taught me about slow and steady endurance which I think helped me in labor. ASHLEY WILLIAMS |

just didn’t matter as much to me as my little boy. Shooting a TV show is fun, but educating women and their partners as they begin parenthood is a true, deep passion of mine. You also chose a home birth to deliver your son. What inspired you to take that route for your first baby?

MINI |

A big one is that I’m just a terrible patient. I easily feel disempowered in a hospital setting and I had a feeling that once I began labor, I simply would never want to leave my home. Our experience was in our control. We live five minutes from a hospital and I wasn’t scared. We were also lucky enough to have a pregnancy without complications which made a home birth a viable, responsible option. If I’d had any issues with him leading up to the birth, I would have considered another route.

ASHLEY WILLIAMS |

M I N I f a l l ‘15

Since we’re here in the nursery, tell us about your inspiration for creating a space for your son.

MINI |

I wanted this room to feel like a magical forest. We went with mahogany furniture and added these fun tree shadow decals for the walls, complete with a little secret bird in the corner that I point out to Gus every day. One whole wall is entirely books which are currently one of the most important aspects of Gus’ life. We want him to value books. My absolute favorite thing in the room is this hanging tree branch. The room doesn’t have a closet and we needed someplace to hang a few articles of clothing, but also it grounds the room conceptually.

ASHLEY WILLIAMS |

Let’s talk parenting! What is most important to you in raising your son?

MINI |

I’ve carried a lot of the mindset I had during my pregnancy into my parenting, but I have to confess, I know way way more about birth than I do about a baby once it’s actually born! There was a steep learning curve there where Neal and I often looked at each other and said “I don’t know,” in unison. In terms of discipline, tantrums have yet to hit this house. We do a lot of laughing, singing, crawling and playing in the mud. Gus gets into everything and he loves to laugh. We sat on the floor today for forty minutes and played with a broom—Gus loves brooms. Who doesn’t? The plan is to communicate openly with him as much as we can. For instance, explaining why there are certain things he can’t touch so I’m not just saying “no” all day. I also have to remember that he’s already watching me very closely and what I do, he will do. That means I’m aiming to embody my most relaxed self so that he will stay calm too. But ask me this again in three years! I’ll probably laugh and think “she had no idea what she was in for!”

ASHLEY WILLIAMS |

We love the name Gus! How did you arrive on your son’s name?

MINI |

It’s not short for anything and it’s not a family name. It’s not for the fat mouse in Cinderella, though he’s amazing. We just loved it from the start. We imagined a grown man named Gus: at his job, at a party, walking down the street, at his wedding and we kept saying, “Who doesn’t love a guy named Gus? He sounds like such a good guy.” A friend even had a onesie made that says, “Who doesn’t love a guy named Gus?” Yes, we went through hundreds of names, from our families, from literature, from favorite movies. I had a note on my phone called “baby names” and once a week Neal would veto everything but Gus. Naming is hard; that name is forever. I say the name Gus about 50 times a day now. I’m so relieved I still like it!

ASHLEY WILLIAMS |

Now you do play a mom of five on The Jim Gaffigan Show. Any chance you’ll strive for that many kids in real life?

MINI |

No! The crazy thing about the real life Jeannie Gaffigan is that if you hang out with her for too long you might get seduced into thinking that life with five kids is a

ASHLEY WILLIAMS |

really fun party and anyone can do it. But the truth is, Jeannie can do it— and a select few other superheroes on this planet. I am simply not as good at juggling as she is and I know I’d stress out my kids! I would love to have another child—in a bit, don’t rush me— but I think I’d have to stop at two.
