It’s also the season to give your kids’ spaces a makeover! Make it your new year’s resolution to take your old kids spaces from drab to fab— Mini is here to give you that much needed boost! The holiday season is certainly a time of hustle and bustle, gift giving, tree lighting, hot cocoa drinking and carol singing, but it’s also a time to enjoy the company of your friends and family. MARSHMALLOW TREES
M I N I h o l i d a y ‘14
CRAFT BUDDY
This little guy is the son of Petunia Pickle Bottom’s CMO and founding partner.
WHAT TO DO
Set aside air-popped popcorn. Use hot glue to attach different sized marshmallows to the sides of the cone. To get your little one involved, have them push on the marshmallow to hold it in place while it dries to the cone. Once the cone is covered in marshmallows, push pieces of popcorn in the cracks or use the hot glue to attach the popcorn to the marshmallows. You can glue the popcorn onto the marshmallow tree in different designs (i.e. in a garland shape around the tree, all over the place or concentrated at the bottom or top portions). The design is up to you!

MUSIC PAPER TREES
M I N I h o l i d a y ‘14
WHAT TO DO
Use hot glue to make a stand out of your balsa wood square and dowel. Cut the music sheets into squares with pinking shears to get serrated edges or cut them in circles. Cut a variety of sizes, from 1 to 5 inches wide. Note: we used one shape per tree. Cut or poke holes in the center of each felt square to make it easy for your child to side it down the wood stand. Start sliding the cut music sheets down the dowel, sliding a felt sheet in between sheets every so often. Use the larger size music sheets first, with the smaller sheets towards the top to get a “tree-like” appearance. Note: twist the squares once they’re on the stand so that they don’t line up perfectly. It really adds to the “tree-like” appearance.

Having been in the spotlight from such an early age, you were exposed to a lot and even forced to grow up a bit earlier. Was there anything you would change?

I would not change anything because it all literally made me who I am today. I would have liked to have enjoyed myself a little more and not have taken myself so seriously.
That my mom did the best she was capable of— sometimes it was great, sometimes it was not so great. But I knew, no matter what, that she loved me. BROOKE SHIELDS |
BROOKE SHIELDS |
How did your relationship with your own mother shape the mother you are today? How are you doing things differently with your own daughters?

Our relationship with our mothers shape most of our future relationships. I maintained the humor and I teach my girls to be kind to everybody. [However], I am very conscious to not burden my children with feeling the need to take care of their mother. BROOKE SHIELDS |
What would you say is most important to you in parenting?

The paper puppet parade is a great one to do after school with a sibling, parent or friends. I love the idea of making these small for shadow puppets as well as extra large, as seen in the book, with poster board. The Paper Plate Masks are a great and easy craft using a myriad of things you have around the house. The duct tape portfolio is a home run for the 8 and up crowd to do on their own and they will love keeping their treasures in it. The twig crown is also a great snowy day project (just collect the twigs from the leafless branches when they aren’t covered with snow!). MERRILEE LIDDIARD |
MINI |
What inspired you to create the Playful book?
MINI |
I had been creating easy crafts and toys on my blog (mermagblog.com) for a few years and really wanted to take it to the next level and create something that parents and kids could hold in their hands, peruse through at any time and constantly be inspired by. Playful also came about as a way to share a range of projects that encouraged parents to not be afraid of creating with and for their children.
Oh this question is so hard! I’m a big fan of the cardboard brownstones and have made about 10 of them so far. I also really love the ease and simplicity of the wooden doll face necklaces and the duct tape trucks made from cracker boxes are a family favorite too.
MERRILEE LIDDIARD |
Do you have a certain craft that was the most fun to make?
MERRILEE LIDDIARD |
MINI |
Which crafts do your kids love to make?
My kids love the trucks as well as the paper puppets, plate masks (they’ve made a TON of these!), the tiger pinata, the brownstones always have lego guys in them, the wooden play village is a favorite of our little 2 year old... oh man, they love them all! MERRILEE LIDDIARD |
Our grandparents used to be very versed in making toys either out of wood or cloth and I wanted to bring that magic back to our generation and to do it in a creative, yet very doable, way.
WHEN IT COMES TO PREPPING
for baby, parents have many items on their to-do list— one of which is designing a nursery. The task is exciting, but the choices can overwhelm, so Mini has teamed up with stylist Jen Pinkston for chic guidance.

These tiny babes come into the world needing a disproportional amount of stuff! I loved this Serena and Lily bench for its design, but also for the storage. We have three baskets in the cubbies now that hold Parker’s blankets, washcloths, extra sheets and other linens. We also use this set of baskets for toys in her room, toys in the living room, and as her laundry hamper. Look to add stylish storage wherever you can! STORAGE, STORAGE, STORAGE |
Go for a gender neutral paint color. You’re less likely to get tired of it and it will work if your next babe is of the opposite sex. I’m still over-the-moon with this Benjamin Moore hue in “Blue Springs.” GO GENDER NEUTRAL |
The rug is everything! Whether you’re working on tummy time, stacking blocks or reading books together, you’re going to spend so much time lying on your back here. Choose something plush and cozy that won’t shed.

“Think outside the box when it comes to retailers. Some of your favorite shops might not be baby branded, but they make pieces that will jive with your existing aesthetic. West Elm makes a great glider, Ikea has TV consoles that make great changing tables, CB2’s whimsical look is perfect for a nursery. Get creative!”
JEN SAYS
“Opt for interesting details. This light fixture caught my eye and now it continues to catch hers. Switching out fixtures can make a huge impact. We also swapped out the knobs on this dresser for gilded ones from Anthropologie and now she crawls to them like a moth to a flame!
JEN SAYS
“Choose pieces they can grow into, especially the larger investment pieces. Look to buy sophisticated larger pieces and add a juvenile touch with the accessories— pillows, toys, dolls, and books.”

THE ONE THING ABOUT PARENTING NO ONE RE-
how crippling the love can be. Loving someone this much has a scary side as well.
ALLY WARNS YOU ABOUT IS
IF I WROTE A BOOK ABOUT PARENTING IT WOULD BE CALLED,
“Whoa, Sh*t Just Got Real.”
a long Rachel Pally dress with a leather jacket and maybe a fur vest on top... and lipstick. MY FAVORITE PIECE IN MY SON’S WARDROBE IS his Rachel Pally leggings, of course! And a vintage denim shirt I embroidered for him when he was little. It matches the one I made his dad years ago. THE ULTIMATE BABY SPLURGE WAS the Dwell Studio furniture in his room. And his gorgeous custom electric love dreamcatcher we had made for him while I was pregnant. A GLIMPSE OF MY MORNING WOULD INCLUDE my son yelling “All done!” from his room when he’s ready to get out of his crib. I go grab him and his stuffed cat/fox (what is it anyway?) and a few books and we snuggle with him in our bed for as long as he will take it— which isn’t as long as my husband or I would like— then it’s off to play in his little kitchen. THE PERFECT HOLIDAY ENSEMBLE INCLUDES
WHEN I WAS PREGNANT, MY FAVORITE RP PIECE WAS
my Amelia Dress [I wore] almost every day. I made a new batch just for my pregnancy. THE BEST PIECE OF BABY GEAR I PURCHASED WAS
my black linen Sakura Bloom Ring Sling. I bought it when Tao was tiny and still use it sometimes. It bundles up small enough to fit in your purse and allows for easy, hands-free baby wearing while still being chic. WHEN DRESSING THE BUMP, REMEMBER TO show it off! I WOULD DESCRIBE MY PARENTING STYLE AS relaxed. My parents always said “roots
and wings.” Give your child a loving, trusting foundation and let them be who they are. Give guidance but also give freedom. My son is only 20 months, but I hope to follow those ideals as he grows up. MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY SONG IS anything my husband plays on the guitar that I can sing along to, although I’m kind of a Scrooge about Christmas music. MY FAVORITE ELEMENTS IN MY SON’S NURSERY ARE
the tipi my husband surprised me with after we got pregnant and the rocking horse my dad made for Tao. OUR NIGHTTIME ROUTINE INCLUDES dinner, playtime, bath. Fighting over brushing teeth, jammies, snuggles, reading Goodnight, Moon 42 times with Tao filling in the words and I sing him the same songs every night. MY IDEA OF A CHIC KIDS ENSEMBLE IS letting a kid look like a kid. No gimmicks, no awkward accessories. I love Tao in printed Rachel Pally leggings, an American Apparel baseball tee with a pair of sneakers. Function over fashion, but still cute! IF I WERE TO GIVE MY SON ONE PIECE OF STYLE AD-
“wear whatever you want to wear. Be whoever you want to be.”
VICE IT WOULD BE
IF THERE WERE MORE HOURS IN THE DAY, I WOULD
spend more time with Tao, of course! As a working mom, it’s hard to feel like I get enough time in every day. I have mornings and rush home from work to be with him, but I relish in the weekends and all of our uninterrupted time! MY ULTIMATE GIFT PICK WOULD BE a family vacation! We’re going to a little bay north of Tulum over the holidays, just the three of us. What better gift is there than sun and sand and family?

ON HER LIST Her youngest is dreaming of LEGO Friends this holiday season.
We have to ask— what’s the meaning behind the name? How did you come up with it?
MINI |
I have to give my husband credit here. When my first daughter, Belle, was little she wouldn’t eat chicken until we started calling it pink chicken and then she loved it. She would ask for pink chicken for dinner. STACEY FRASER |
What are your favorite pieces from Pink Chicken this season?
MINI |
I love the little group we did for women and girls. They are dresses and tops in grey, blue and magenta colors in our traditional Indian block printing and some beautiful embroideries. We did similar styles for kids and women for the reimagined mommy and me. STACEY FRASER |
How do your girls inspire you to create new pieces?
MINI |
They inspire me everyday. Belle is 13 now [and] has grown up with the brand. She will say, “That’s so Pink Chicken mom” or “I don’t think your customer will like that.” Sadie is 9 and has a big influence on the tween collection. STACEY FRASER |
Now that the weather is getting colder, tell us what you think is the perfect winter ensemble.
MINI |
We always love striped leggings mixed with our printed dresses. We also have a perfect layering sweater called Maude. I think dressing kids in layers is best. STACEY FRASER |
Let’s talk mom style. What do you think every mom should have in her wardrobe?
MINI |
A Pink Chicken dress, of course! Our dresses and tops are no fuss and always stylish so you feel good at drop-off and out to dinner. STACEY FRASER |

Paige and Christina have been with me for four years and I can count on them for anything. We are a real family and totally support each other. STACEY FRASER |

now that the weather has taken a turn for the cold?
MINI |
We all love to get cozy in our Roberta Roller Rabbit pajamas and watch movies. My eldest daughter already has an eye for style— she especially loves wearing dresses with sneakers and shops mostly in the boys section for her weekend clothes. She has a real mod look going, her endless legs help that too (not inherited from me!).
SG |
My three beautiful children inspire me every day. They are totally fearless and up for anything. I am also inspired by my surroundings and travels. Living in New York City, it’s hard to not be totally excited by all that goes on around you. Its fast pace keeps my mind always running. I love to experience other environments too— beaches and colorful, exotic cities. Mexico and the Caribbean are some of my favorites. I love the use of bold color and beauty that is everywhere. SHOSHANNA GRUSS |
As a New Yorker and lover of the Big Apple, what do you love about raising your kids in the city?
MINI |
I feel we are all learning and exploring every day. When you have everything available to you at your fingers tips, you have to take advantage of it and we do! We explore all different neighborhoods and restaurants. Usually I’ll do a little research, pick one or two places that I know we will like and make sure we explore without a plan too. I love that my children will see so many different cultures and people. I’ve traveled the world, and I like so many different cities, but nothing compares to New York!
SG |
You also introduced pieces for little girls! What prompted you to design for Minis?
Photos, left to right: HATCH Collection, Elizabeth Arden, Etsy (LOVARTI)
MINI |
It started as me designing pieces for my daughte, Sienna, to wear that matched me. My friends would ask me to make pieces for their children and from there it evolved into a full-on baby girl line.

SG |
do you think should be in every mom’s wardrobe? Little black dress for date night, big neutral cardigan for layering, a perfectly broken-in pair of boyfriend jeans, a colorful dress that makes you smile and a pair of sexy shoes that make you stand a little taller and walk a little more confidently.
SG |
Local advice! If a Mini Mom was headed to Manhattan, where are five places she should visit with kids?
MINI |
How do you manage to run a successful brand and keep up with your three children?
MINI |
Central Park, especially the zoo, and the carousel. The Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Egyptian Wing and Temple of Dendur. Chinatown for dim-sum, bubble tea and some wandering. The Natural History Museum for the dinosaurs, the butterfly exhibit and hall of animals. The West Village is just a cozy area that I love to wander with my family, discovering a bookshop or finding a place for hot chocolate. SG |
The real key is to be organized. Keeping on top of things is what makes me feel sane. I don’t bite off more than I can chew (anymore), first comes family, then comes work and the rest you have to find time for somewhere in between. You can’t do it all, no one can. Key word: prioritize!

We’re very excited to reconnect with you and your growing family! Tell us how life has changed now that you are mom to little Isis? KATHERINE KALLINIS BERMAN | Everyday is an adventure but I truly love the controlled chaos! I’m much more patient these days and I’ve learned to always give myself a MINI |
little extra time when I’m with Isis, especially when traveling! My priorities have definitely shifted and Isis always comes first. It is funny how the things that used to stress me out or bother me, don’t anymore. MINI | Is there anything you wish you had known beforehand or something that surprised you most? What do you love most M I N I h o l i d a y ‘14
about motherhood? The thing that surprised me most is the amount of energy a small child can have! We will take Isis for hikes and she will walk for a mile and still want to keep going— I sometimes have trouble keeping up! The best thing is watching Isis learn about the world around her. When I see her get so excited seeing a butterfly or an ant, it makes me want to cry tears of happiness! KKB |
piano that she loves to play with, a pink Pottery Barn kids kitchen set, pink cupcake paintings, pink reading chair, pink blanket and a cute pink flamingo painting her great Aunt painted for her! Her room is probably my favorite place to hang out! MINI | What quirks, loves or traits has Isis inherited from your husband and yourself? Isis has a great love of the outdoors that I think she got from her father; she loves nature and going on hikes. Her obsession with cupcakes obviously comes from my side of the family. She loves watching the cupcakes being frosted when she comes to the bakery and she already knows what is inside the pink box! Her favorite flavor is strawberry! KKB |
What’s important to you in raising your daughter?
MINI |
Raising Isis to be compassionate and considerate towards others. I hope that I can instill in her a sense of selfworth so that she grows up to be a confident and strong woman. My parenting style is very laid back and not regimented at all. [Since] my schedule is always a little chaotic, I try to keep our schedules fluid everyday so that Isis can adapt to change. KKB |
We know from DC Cupcakes that you love pink! Did you incorporate the color into Isis’s nursery? Tell us how you decorated the room.
MINI |
Of course! Her room is white and cream with accents of pink all over. We have a pink KKB |
Moms today have busy schedules. What are your tips for putting together the perfect look on little time? MINI |
If you don’t have time to wash your hair, Drybar makes a great dry shampoo. Spray your roots and use a round curling iron to create waves. For a quick 5 minute makeup look: concealer under the eyes, some mascara, bronzer and bright pink lipstick can make you look put together in no time! To finish off the look, throw on a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, blazer and a scarf. A good blazer can really formalize a look. KKB |
What is the greatest challenge of motherhood? How do you juggle being a mom, master baker and businesswoman?
MINI |
The work/life balance. In many ways, I am extremely lucky. My work is my life, so I am able to bring it home with me most days. I have a home office and it is easy for me to be with Isis when I’m [working] or on calls. When I’m traveling to our stores in NYC, Boston, L.A., I will sometimes bring Isis but if it’s a quick trip, I can leave her at home with my mom; [she] is with Isis all day while I’m working or traveling. I was very close to my grandmother growing up and I love that my KKB |

mom has a close relationship with [Isis]. I am able to balance it all because of my strong support system and I could not do it without the help of my mom and sister who are always there to help out when I’m feeling overwhelmed! We love your chic style, apron included! What are some of your mommy wardrobe must-haves for the cold weather?

LEFT Arizona native White gave birth to daughter London in May 2012.
You’re a singer, songwriter, leading lady at The Girls with Glasses, and a mom! How do you manage to make it all work? Tell us how you’ve learned to juggle all of your roles?
MINI |
The truth? I don’t! I drop balls left, right and center, I disappoint people and get down on myself. I’m chronically late and live in a mess, but at the end of the day, I try super hard to remember what is most important, which is my family and just keep trying to do my best. Thankfully, I love everything I do and I think that is essential to the process. I do have a sense of purpose and that keeps me going. BROOKE WHITE |
As a musician mom, we’re certain your daughter will be into music too! How are you teaching her about music? What are your favorite songs to sing to her (or together!)?
MINI |
She has been a rock ‘n’ roll baby from the beginning! I toured and recorded throughout my pregnancy so she was kicking along to the beat when she was in my belly. We are always listening to music BROOKE WHITE |
and I think that alone has a huge impact on music education— that is how I learned. It just comes so naturally. We have listened to Here Comes the Sun since she was born, we love Mary Poppins, ‘70s music and lately she is obsessed with The Chipmunks Christmas. She comes with me to the studio and hangs out during band practice, we sing every night before bed— songs from primary and lots of ones that we make up about a Halloween kitty cat that she loves. What was the one thing that surprised you most about motherhood?
MINI |
Wow, I’m not sure there’s just one thing. But certainly the level of love and concern is off the charts, also how hard it is to juggle everything. Nursing was brutal and I wasn’t sure I expected that, but really the increase of joy is pretty unbelievable and while I expected it, it was more than I imagined. BROOKE WHITE |
What are your favorite things to dress your little Mini in right now?
MINI |
My little Mini just wants to wear Minnie mostly, as in Minnie Mouse. She loves all things Mickey and Minnie and loves to wear her Minnie slippers with everything. It’s still a lot of leggings, Gap sweats and cute t-shirts. She isn’t into headbands or jewelry, but she loves a good bright pair of socks. She is a little girl and I want to foster her as a creative little individual. I let her make choices and often they don’t match but that’s okay! Except for church, that’s moms day to choose. BROOKE WHITE |
What inspired you to design your daughter’s room?
MINI |
I always swore I wouldn’t paint a girl’s room pink, but something weird happens to you when you are pregnant with a little lady and before you know you are on a ladder with a paint brush full of pink paint. I went with a light, bright, almost white pink— it’s soft and feminine. But I didn’t want something girly, so I loaded it up with lots of color, painted an enormous picture of bright polka dots, did a gallery wall, found a bed and painted it yellow. MINI | We love your style, especially on The BROOKE WHITE |
86
Girls with Glasses! We adore the bold, bright ensembles! What influences your style and what are your style staples, especially as a busy mom? I naturally lean towards a more ‘70s bohemian style influenced by the Laurel Canyon singer/songwriter era. GWG is more of a ‘60s mod, influenced also by Audrey Hepburn, Summer’s [the other half of The Girls with Glasses] style inspiration. Comfort has definitely made its way up the priority list since becoming a mom. I am usually very low-maintenance which is the California style: no make-up, wash and wear hair, boyfriend jeans, button-downs and tshirts. BROOKE WHITE |
It’s the holiday season! How will you celebrate with your family?
MINI |
Lots of Chipmunks and Carpenters Christmas, Christmas trees, hot chocolate, movies like Elf and taking night drives to look at lights. This is the craziest time of the year [and] opportunities to just celebrate are hard to come by. It is the best when it’s not stressful! BROOKE WHITE |

KENDRA WILKINSON |
I was at Sundance and the
driver [with me] was on the phone with his daughter [whose] name was Elijah. Before that day, I had been looking for the perfect unisex name— like Jaden and Parker and Ryan. Then I went to Sundance and sat in this man’s car and it all changed. I freaked out the second I heard the name, I knew immediately that it would be my daughter’s name. I went home and Hank and I agreed on it, so we chose Alijah with an “A.” How did you go about preparing your son for a new baby in the house?
MINI |
I told my son about my pregnancy the moment I found out because it was important to me that he was just as much a part of the journey as I was. He was SO excited. We talked about it every day while [Alijah] was in my belly. He learned how to have a relationship with her even before she was born, how to kiss and hug her before bedtime and love her. When she was finally born and he got to meet her, I’ll never forget that. Now they have an extra special bond and really need each other. She has a really special smile whenever he is around. MINI ASKED MOM ADVICE We asked Kendra what she would tell her new parent self, knowing what she does now. “Take a deep breath, you will learn as you go and figure it all out.”
What has changed for you in terms of becoming a mother of two? How is life different now having two kids to chase after?
MINI |
Honestly, Alijah is the easiest baby. Little Hank is in so many different sports and we have games every other day for all his teams, and we just bring Alijah along and it is not much more work. She’s such a happy baby.
You look amazing! What are your tips for losing the baby weight? What fitness routine or healthy eating guidelines do you follow?
MINI |
KENDRA WILKINSON |
We’ve heard SO much about Alijah’s nursery. What is your favorite feature in her room?
MINI |
My favorite thing about my daughter’s room is the color (soft canary yellow) and the wood paneling behind her crib. It’s just such an inviting and warm color. I’m so happy when I’m in there. KENDRA WILKINSON |
You have to find the right diet plan for you, your lifestyle and your body. I chose the Atkins diet because I can have all of my favorite foods (cheese, avocado, steak). Working out is hard to do, but the key to fitness as a busy mom is to mix it up. One day I would do yoga and go for a walk around our neighborhood, the next day do a nice long hike, and the following do some weights and cardio in my gym. It’s important for me not to get bored! KENDRA WILKINSON |
How was this second pregnancy different from your first?
MINI |
My pregnancy experiences were almost exactly the same: same symptoms, gained the same amount of weight, they were both c-sections. The only difference was in my cravings. With Hank, I craved junk food and fast foods. But with Alijah, I craved healthy, clean foods. And oranges! Orange everything. KENDRA WILKINSON |
MINI |
How did you design your son’s room?
I wanted my son’s room to play to his personal interests, but also be something that he won’t outgrow too fast and will last years. He loves building with LEGOs, so we did a LEGO-themed room and he and his friends love it so much. KENDRA WILKINSON |

MINI ASKED THE HOLIDAYS We asked Kendra what she’s looking forward to about the holidays. “Hank’s parents and my dad are coming in which I’m so excited about! And it’s Alijah’s first Christmas so I’m really excited to make that memory.”
