2003 with a love of letterpress and an appreciation for simple, tasteful, design. Jamie and I both have an appreciation for fine stationery, but at the time we felt that there was a whole in the market for simple, understated design. The high- end options seemed stuffy and outdated. We started Sugar Paper to create a line that combined the finest materials with classic typefaces yet had a younger feel. We have all come to love the sassy dialogue of DKNYPRGIRL and now, Mini chats with the powerhouse (and mom of two!) behind it all— Aliza Licht. MINI: Talk to us about your popular pres-

ence as DKNY PR Girl. When did you first step on the social media scene? ALIZA LICHT: Time flies when you’re tweeting all day! I started @dkny in May 2009. MINI: What do you love most about your job? AL: How creative it is. You can literally come up with something and run with it. Obviously, budget permitting! MINI: We adore your hilarious blog staple— Show Requests. What was one of the oddest/funniest show requests you’ve ever received? AL: I would say that all the #ShowRequests over the years amaze me every time. I’ve had CEO’s of dry cleaning companies ask me to trade front row seats for 20% off my next dry cleaning purchase. I’ve had buyers of competitive designers requesting seats—

I mean, really? Are you buying the collection? I seriously don’t know what these people are thinking. MINI: What some may not know is that you’re also a mom— which you detail on your personal Twitter @alizalicht. How do you juggle such a demanding job in PR with motherhood? AL: I don’t think that everything needs your attention 100% of the time. When I’m at work, I’m 100% focused on work, when I’m home, I’m 100% focused on family. I will pick up work again once the kids have gone to bed. Of course though, if they bust out their iPads, I’m certainly going to bust out my laptop too! They understand that I have a career and I think working hard is a great example to set for them. I am also a Parent Association president at school. I want them to see me involved in their

education. You know what they say, the busier you are, the more you get done. MINI: What do you see as the benefits of having the best of both worlds? Being a mom and a dedicated career woman at the same time? AL: Well, for one thing, I’m never bored! I think it’s important to keep growing in life and for me, that means new challenges. If you’re never uncomfortable, then you’re not pushing yourself. And if you’re not pushing yourself, you will never know where you could have gone. MINI: You always manage to look fabulous. What are your keys to looking great on little time? AL: Not always, but when I walk outside I am very conscious of how I look. My mother taught me that if you go outside looking like crap, you are destined to run into someone you don’t want to see. I have learned that never fails! I’m not going to lie though, I have a distinct advantage— I was born with hair and makeup skills, so I can literally get ready in twenty minutes if my hair is done. If it’s not, I can definitely get ready in forty-five.

MINI: Are your kids into fashion as much as

you are? Where have you seen yourself rub off on them? AL: They are into fashion, but not to an extreme extent. I don’t want them obsessed with labels and what they are wearing, so I teach them how to dress for the specific occasion, but generally let them style themselves. If it doesn’t match, I couldn’t care less. I want them to feel like fashion is empowering— whatever makes them feel good is fine with me. But it must be weather appropriate! MINI: We love following the funny things your kids say via Twitter. What was the funniest thing they’ve said recently? AL: Me to 8-year-old: “Do you like Miley’s song “We Can’t Stop”?” 8-year-old: “Yes, did she write that before she started sticking her tongue out?” Me to 8-year-old: “It’s report card time!” 5-year-old to me: “This is the best day of my life (evil grin).” MINI: What would you say surprised you most about parenting? AL: How much time and dedication it takes to teach your kids how to be good people. That’s a parent’s job, not the school’s. If you don’t teach them, they don’t know it. Too many people rely on others to teach their kids the essentials in life. You have to spend the time and really invest in your kids if you want them to turn out well. It’s much, much more than just being home for dinner. ■

in Mini’s holiday issue. Let’s start by talking about your blogs, Design for Mankind and Design for Minikind. How did you begin your career as a blogger? ERIN LOECHNER: Thanks for having me! I really feel like I just fell into this career of sorts, so it certainly wasn’t an intentional profession for me— more like a creative evolution? I started blogging in 2001 when it was still called an “online journal” or “web logging,” so it had kind of always been an outlet for my young adult life— a space to catalog my thoughts and process my days. I’m much more private now, but back then when it was just me, my computer and a handful of friends, any topic was game! I launched Design for Mankind when I was thrown into a position as an Art Director at the ad agency I worked at in Los Angeles and was feeling completely over my head. This was in 2006— pre-Pinterest— so I needed a virtual space to store ideas, inspiration and graphics that I could communicate to our clients. Eventually, it became a mix of visual inspiration and personal thoughts, and when I shared my bedroom makeover in our L.A. home in 2007, the site went viral thanks to Design*Sponge, Apartment Therapy and Decor8. I’ve been writing about design in some form ever since and really feel so blessed to be able to combine all of my passions for styling, writing, collecting inspiration, producing projects and coordinating photo shoots all in a day’s work. MINI: Tell us about the inspiration behind your blogs and what can Mini readers find on each one? EL: Both are really just playgrounds for my creative energy, really. Design for Mankind is focused on embracing simple pleasures, learning from my fellow creatives and sharing the inspiration that comes from my love for visuals. I love uncovering

interesting products or creatives doing really out-of-the-box things, as they always cause me to pause and reflect on the life I’m living myself. Other than that, I’ll sometimes share personal thoughts and stories— it’s really a landing pad for so many different things, which is the beauty of a blog, yes? Design for Minikind is much the same, but is a space that I share more kidfocused inspirations. I also write near-weekly letters to my daughter, Bee. MINI: We love following your little one, Bee, on your various platforms. How has your life changed since motherhood? Wish you’d known anything beforehand? EL: Ah, thank you! I think the biggest change in my life is that weighty feeling you get when you realize how precious time is. You have to strive to be that much more intentional with your time— both in the free time you’re rarely given, but also the time you’re spending with your baby/children. It’s an incredibly jarring feeling and I have to continually remind myself not to overthink it— to just enjoy a string of moments in my days that will eventually add up to a life well lived. And yes, I wished I’d known how to do more things one-handed! When you gain a child, you lose a hand. MINI: Being a working mom is definitely chaotic! Tell us how you learned to juggle both roles. What is the key to finding the “perfect” balance? EL: This is a continual process for me and I’m constantly reevaluating depending on my workload and also Bee’s life stages. For now, what works for me is to wake up at 5 AM to work until noon(ish) and then spend the rest of my afternoon/evening with Bee. It makes for a pretty long day and I’m often falling asleep on my dinner plate, but it’s the only way I feel like

I can fit it all in while respecting both my work and my time with Bee, as well as my husband’s schedule. We’re both freelancers, so we’re really lucky to have that flexibility! MINI: Introduce us to Clementine Daily. What inspired you to create this new outlet? EL: I felt the itch last fall, shortly after the birth of my daughter— the push to think more deeply about what I wanted from life. What life wanted from me. There’s just something about change, isn’t there? Whether it arrives swaddled in baby blankets, job promotions or cross-country moves, change propels us to dream beyond ourselves. To turn question marks into statements, complete with a period that forms a new dot on the map entirely— a starting point to a different perspective. Clementine Daily is the period on my page. It began as a search for a women’s

lifestyle site that included all of my aesthetic passions: style, beauty, home design, food— but also the deeper, more meaningful ones: wellness, etiquette, advice, inspiration. I wanted all of it, a site that offered grace and acceptance between boyfriend jeans and beauty balms— a quick pasta recipe seasoned with reassurance and self-respect. I wanted authenticity and reality, not airbrushed and glossy. I wanted inspiration, not aspiration. And I quickly realized that I wasn’t alone. We’re growing tired, aren’t we? Pinterest overload, immaculate parties, confetti in our shoes. Celebrations are fun, but somewhere along the way, we lost the everyday. The glitz and glitter has overshadowed the simplest of pleasures: clean sheets, morning light, hot tea. MINI: What would your advice be to those Mini parents who want to start a blog of their own? EL: I think it’s important to think really hard about the level of privacy you desire for you and your family. What’s their comfort level? What’s your own? And how much time are you willing to spend on the not-so-glamorous parts of blogging, like emails and schedules and deadlines and edits and photos? I’ll admit— it’s a bigger job than I realized it could be, so I’m always looking for ways to streamline and simplify. The wonderful thing is that you can make it anything you’d like, so choose wisely and passionately. MINI: Now that it’s the holiday season, do you and your family have any holiday traditions? EL: I have a feeling we’ll be starting some now that Bee’s getting older (she’s 1 1/2). I can’t wait to see what’s in store for our family over the years and have visions of visiting nursing homes and caroling and crafting. For now, my husband is a big fan of Christmas movies, so I anticipate a few flicks by the fire! ■

MINI: What inspired you to create Madderson

London?

SARA MADDERSON: I was a banker with a

glamorous wardrobe when I got pregnant, and I was totally uninspired by the selection of maternity wear out there. I figured that unless I was crazy, there was a huge opportunity for a maternity brand for women who want stylish, well-made investment pieces and who refuse to compromise sartorially when pregnant. MINI: What sets the brand apart from the rest of the maternity industry? SM: We joke that all of our clothes have to pass the “10-foot-pole test.” Would we touch them with a 10-foot-pole if not pregnant? If not, then they’re not good enough for our maternity line! We don’t believe that pregnant women should be denied that heady sense of love-at-first-sight that we have all experienced when clothes shopping, so we hunt down gorgeous trims, prints and fabrics and spend a lot of time making them workable for pregnancy. MINI: Which piece do you think is a staple that every mom should own this holiday season? SM: The gold-trimmed Camilla shift dress, which is understated but incredibly chic and

will see you through every social occasion. And then there’s our Saturday dress which is made of super-thick premium micromodal and I swear is even more comfortable than your pyjamas while being a lot more stylish! MINI: How would you style a particular Madderson London piece for the holidays? SM: Our recommendation would be, “Don’t be afraid of standing out if you’re pregnant this holiday season!” Our LBD’s have been created to wow. MINI: What motivates you to move the brand forward? Your keys to success in this space? We are also launching womenswear for Spring/Summer ‘14 and that move has largely been driven by the amazing reception we’ve had from customers asking us for a ready-to-wear line. Being able to design two lines for the same woman, whatever her stage in life, is extremely exciting. There will be a strong aesthetic link between the two lines with influences from womenswear carrying over to maternity wear and vice versa. RODGER BERMAN: I love teaching my son new

things and watching him learn. It’s definitely the most amazing part. MINI: Talk to us about how your career has shifted to accommodate your family and fatherhood. RB: I take less drinks and dinner meetings and try to make the most of every minute of the work day so I can get home for dinner and bath time with Skyler. It’s my favorite time of the day. MINI: What are your favorite activities to do with your son? RB: On Sunday mornings, I take him to the farmer’s market near our house. We get popcorn and there are usually pony rides which Skyler loves. It’s our father/son bonding time. MINI: What has surprised you most about parenting? What do you think no one really prepares you for? RB: Everyone tells you that your life as you know it will be over when you become a parent and I found that only part of that

is true. Rachel and I still see our friends, travel and have an active and fun social life, but now it’s just the type of activity that’s changed. We go to our friends’ kids’ birthday parties and, surprisingly, have just as much fun watching our kids play together. When Skyler is happy, we’re happy. MINI: Now that you’re about to be a dad of two, how are your preparing yourself and your home? RB: We’re moving into a larger home so we can have more space and I’m getting as much work in as possible so I can take some down time when the baby comes. MINI: Describe your style— what can we catch you wearing these days? RB: My style is pretty classic overall— jeans, boots and button-down shirts, but I tend to accessorize a lot which gives me a little edge. MINI: How would you describe Skyler’s style? If you had it your way, what would he be wearing? RB: He would be wearing the rock and roll tshirts that I bought for him! He has Grateful Dead, Nirvana and Rolling Stones shirts, but Rachel won’t let him wear them. ■

It’s hard to be accountable for everything that comes out of your mouth. We all say things we regret or sometimes things done come out the right way. I would always prefer having a script! MINI: You’re a busy mom of four children. Give us a glimpse of your rare “me time.” How do you spend the coveted down time? HD: Haha. I will let you know when that happens! MINI: Organization is key to managing a busy family. What three items do you have with you at all times? HD: I am hyper organized. It makes me feel sane and in control. I always have my cell phone, credit card and a lip gloss. MINI: Your son is the oldest of the four and the only boy— how does his style and personality compare to your other children? Would you say he’s more like you or your husband? HD: My son is definitely a mixture of both Terry and myself. I think Nicholas will be a very good husband because he’s so good with the girls. His style is cool— jeans and a leather jacket are his weekend staples. MINI: We can only imagine your daughters’ sense of style with such a chic mom. Do they try to emulate your style? What can we find them wearing most often? HD: The girls are all so different! Max, 10,

is a bit edgy. She likes an off beat look. Katarina likes classic lines and dresses. Collette loves super heroes and can often be seen in a batman shirt with a tutu and side pony. MINI: With the holidays just around the corner, what traditions are you looking forward to with your family? HD: We will be in NY visiting my family for Thanksgiving/Chanukkah. Christmas this year we will be doing a “staycation.” Some day trips to the snow and other fun things. MINI: What ensembles do you have planned for holiday parties? Do you have favorite patterns, prints, colors you bring out this time of year? HD: Lets be honest, I wear a lot of black! However, this year I’m really enjoying all of the burgundy and plaids around. MINI: How do you typically deck the halls or decorate for the holidays? HD: When we get back from New York, we will set up our menorah and dreidles for Channukah and go shopping for a Christmas tree as well. We celebrate everything! ■

IVANKA TRUMP: After noticing an absence in the marketplace for a brand catering to the confident, career-oriented woman, I created the Ivanka Trump brand giving women clothing and accessories that can take her from the boardroom to a night out. The brand is seeking to redefine wear to work for the young professional, offering feminine, sophisticated styles with a youthful edge. The collections echo my personal aesthetic of polished elegance coupled with a youthful approach and resonates with today’s modern woman who works in multiple capacities— as a businesswoman, entrepreneur, girlfriend, wife and mother. MINI: What are some of your favorite pieces in the collection and what do you often pair them with? IT: The asymmetrical peplum sheath dress is a great piece. I pair it with a blazer and pumps at the office and a strappy sandal and statement earrings for a night out. The cut is really flattering and the bold red color is great. MINI: Now that it’s the holiday season, what are your favorite ways to spend the season? IT: Our family spends the holidays at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach. It’s such a beautiful place and we grew up there. It’s wonderful to be able to bring our own families now and all spend time together. Talk to us about your new show, Instant Mom. TMH: Working on Instant Mom has been wonderful so far. The cast is a joy and our producers are fabulous. Even with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, the work is something I look forward to; I’m especially enjoying getting to play a mom for the first time. MINI: How is your fun, motherly role on the show different from your parenting your own son? Do you share a lot of similarities with your character? TMH: The only major difference is that she’s step-mother to older children and I find that this is the one role I’ve had that’s the closest to who I am in real life. She may be a mom, but she hasn’t lost any of the traits that make her who she is, beyond motherhood. She’s fun, fashionable and sassy— which are qualities I like to think I still possess! MINI: What is important to you in parenting? What traits do you hope to instill or lessons do you hope to teach your son, Cree? TMH: Making sure you pay attention to your child’s happiness, needs, [their] strengths and weaknesses and what’s really important is providing unconditional love. A child learns how to love others when he knows and receives love themselves, and

that is very important to me. These are the things that I hope and try to instill in Cree. MINI: You also wrote a book— Oh Baby! Pregnancy Tales and Advice from One Hot Mama to Another. What inspired you to write the book? TMH: Most of the pregnancy books that I found were medically driven and focused on the “scary” parts of pregnancy. What I wanted and what I feel so many other expectant mothers crave was a personable, humorous, tell-it-like-it-is approach. MINI: What does it mean to you to be a hot mama? TMH: A hot mama to me is a mom who doesn’t lose herself or her identity just because she’s become a mom. She’s an amazing mom and also a woman who hasn’t forgotten about herself, what she wants, and who she was before having a child. So many women possess a plethora of different qualities and wear many hats in their day to day lives— they are mothers, sisters, best friends, daughters and wives (to name a few) and I think it’s important to remember that. MINI: How do you manage to look great and stay chic with a working mommy schedule? TMH: Eating healthy, drinking lots of water, and sticking to a workout program that I enjoy are all crucial to my keeping it together. MINI: What surprised you most about parenting? What do you think is one thing no one really prepares you for?

It’s something I need to work on, however I hear it never really goes away. MINI: How would you describe Cree’s style? TMH: Cree is a very cool kid. I like to dress him like his dad who loves camouflage pants and cool boots and beanies. MINI: How would you describe your own style? What is your mommy uniform? TMH: I feel like I’ve become more daring with my wardrobe choices since becoming a mom. I’m not afraid to try new things— I love a good high heel and basically make sure I feel confident in whatever I wear. MINI: Now that you and your sister Tamera are both parents, are you finding you bounce a lot of mommy musings off of each other? What’s it like to both be raising young boys? TMH: It’s really cool that were both raising young boys and exciting to know that they’ll be friends and are able to play with each other. I love knowing that they’ll have each other in a similar way that Tamera and I have each other. MINI: What changes have you seen in yourself since you became a mom? TMH: I am much more patient. I’ve also learned to really appreciate the small things in life. ■

DID YOU KNOW Oxford’s favorite TV mom is Roseanne and she admits she cannot live without her kids or her iPhone.

MINI: We’re so excited to feature you in our

holiday issue! Let’s start by talking about how you became a such a huge Twitter personality. When did you first take to Twitter and what were your first tweets about? KELLY OXFORD: I joined Twitter in march of 2009. I always have tweeted the same sort of observational daily things. MINI: How did your Twitter commentary translate into a blog, a bestselling book, TV scripts, and a screenplay? KO: I’ve always written. Twitter introduced me to other writers who subsequently introduced me to agents. I just gave the agents all of my material. MINI: When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? How do you think your younger self would react to your life now? KO: I wanted to be a writer. I don’t think, when you’re young, you expect your life to be anything other than what you have planned for yourself, so I think I’d just be like “Yeah, I know, I’m a writer.” MINI: Tell us more about your book, Everything Is Perfect When You’re a Liar. What inspired you to write it? KO: When I got an agent, I went from writing every day for myself to putting together a thirty-page book proposal and sending it out into the world. On the average, I’m much better at communicating through writing than I am through discussion, so I’ve always done it. MINI: We love that you tweet about your kids and the funny things they say! Tell us

about a funny moment with them recently. KO: This morning Bea, age 5, said she wishes Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse would have sex and babies “already!” MINI: Do you think your children inherited your sense of humor? What traits do you hope they pick up (or don’t pick up) from you or your husband? KO: One thing being a parent for over a decade has taught me is that people are born with their own personalities. The way my husband and I treat them and talk to them definitely influences their boundaries, but other than that, they are who they are. I hope they are more organized than we are, but I think their genes aren’t likely to do that for them. MINI: What are your kids into wearing these days? What looks can we expect to see from each of them? KO: They will literally wear the closest outfit to them in the morning. Clean or not clean. MINI: Parenting is juggling, especially when you’re a working mom. What do you think are the keys to managing the chaos? How do you handle it? KO: Sometimes I’m good at it and sometimes I’m terrible. I find when I’m the best at parenting, I’m the worst at my job and when I’m the best at my job, I’m not the best parent. I don’t think I can expect to be able to do everything well; it’s ludicrous. I was a housewife and made no money for 10 years and I could have worked on my house and my kids every

single day, 24 hours a day, and not had everything in Martha Stewart order. I think we forget that Martha has a team of housekeepers and sous chefs and drivers. Not to mention [she is] 72, with grown children. Now that I’m basically working every single day, I’m definitely better at making the most of my time with them. MINI: You have a lot on your plate. Tell us more about your “typical” day online as a hilarious comedienne and offline as a mom. Do you follow a routine with your kids? KO: I help them off to school, then I go to work, then I come home for dinner and help put them to bed. That’s it! MINI: Your family just moved to Los Angeles from Canada to take the next step in your career. What has been the biggest culture shock for you and your kids? KO: Probably all of the garbage on the streets. Canada is very good at keeping clean. MINI: Now that it’s the holiday season, what are your family’s holiday plans? Do you have holiday traditions you’re looking forward to? KO: We like to listen to a lot of Christmas music. A lot of it. It’s already happening. Henry’s birthday is November 24 and mine is November 29, so that usually kicks off the season for us, musically.

MINI: If you could give your kids one piece

of advice, what would it be? KO: Do what genuinely makes you happy and is your passion, even if I tell you it’s dumb. ■
