EDITOR‘S LETTER

Welcome to the new Mini! As we embark on our sixth year of publishing this little magazine for the modern parent, we felt we were due for a much-needed makeover. If you have taken a few minutes to browse our new website, you will notice a brighter, cleaner, polished feel as we made the navigation more user-friendly and put a larger focus on content in between issues. We now have new articles popping up daily on the new Mini— spanning topics from beauty to home tours to style and the latest from the baby and kids sphere. And since you’re here (thank you for reading, by the way!), you will see that we’ve debuted a new logo and new little touches within the magazine itself. And onto the magazine, we go! I am thrilled with the inspiring parents we have included here in our first issue of 2016. Sit down, relax and dive into beautiful imagery of homes from Manhattan to Salt Lake City to London (seriously, these kids spaces are unlike any other!), and words of wisdom on learning to balance life and parenthood and career— who doesn’t need that? The new Mini is shiny and fresh and perfect for the spring season and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Happy spring! TALK TO US!

With a soft color palette, eye-catching artwork and dreamy, fluffy accents, the nursery of DANNIJO co-founder Jodie Snyder Morel’s daughter Margaux is a haven of inspiration. PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAIRE ESPARROS FOR HOMEPOLISH INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY

58

M I N I s p r i n g ‘16

The room feels girly in a bohemian gypset way. We started with a soft color palette of whites and greys and brought in touches of color. How would you describe the look and the feel of Margaux’s nursery?

MINI |

I didn’t want the space to feel like a nursery. The room feels girly in a bohemian gypset way. We started with a soft color palette of whites and greys and brought in touches of color. It feels soft and airy with lots of personal touches. I focused on texture and created playful moments with stuffed animals and art. We kept our vintage chandelier in the space which makes it feel a bit more grown up and not too much like a typical nursery.

JODIE SNYDER MOREL |

What are some of your favorite pieces in the space?

MINI |

I love the custom dream catcher by Spokewoven and the lamb rocker by Povl Kjer. They both personalize the room and make me want to be a kid again. I also have a rack of white vintage Victorian lace dresses I’ve been collecting which add a romantic touch.

JODIE SNYDER MOREL |

How has your home’s style changed since you became a mom?

MINI |

60

M I N I s p r i n g ‘16

I think twice before I buy anything; I want to make sure it’s kid friendly. It’s crazy how many pieces of furniture we had to remove because they’re dangerous for Margaux. I still have the same taste, but am more practical. Unfortunately, a white couch is out of the question for now.

JODIE SNYDER MOREL |

What do you think is the one aspect of motherhood that no one really warns you about?

MINI |

I don’t think anyone can prepare you for motherhood. You learn along the way. I can’t believe how much they pick up at such a young age. Margaux amazes me everyday with something new and she’s only 14 months old!

JODIE SNYDER MOREL |

How about your favorite part of motherhood?

MINI |

The unconditional love for her from the second she was born. I can’t remember what life was like

JODIE SNYDER MOREL |

before having Margaux. Tell us the story behind your daughter’s name.

MINI |

My husband is French and we wanted a French name that could be pronounced in English. That rules out a lot of names. We both loved Margaux.

JODIE SNYDER MOREL |

What do you think is the greatest struggle of motherhood?

MINI |

JODIE SNYDER MOREL |

myself.

Finding time for

62

M I N I s p r i n g ‘16

Looking back to your first days as a mom, what advice would you give yourself?

MINI |

To try not to worry about everything. I’m sure I’ll be more laid back with the second, but everything is new and I was a bit hard on myself.

JODIE SNYDER MOREL |

As the co-founder of DANNIJO, how do you manage the balance between career and motherhood?

MINI |

It’s all about finding balance. When I’m at work, I’m 100% focused on work and when I’m with Margaux, I’m 100% focused on her. You can’t be two places at one time, so it takes time to find the perfect balance.

JODIE SNYDER MOREL |

How has your work schedule shifted to accommodate a little one?

MINI |

MINI |

Thank you for inviting us into your home! How would you describe the design, the feel?

MINI |

Our house was remodeled right before we bought it. While the previous owners did a lovely job, it isn’t really my aesthetic. There’s a lot of black granite and travertine. In order to make it feel more inviting, I added a lot of bright colors, fun art, and rich textures. As much as I aspire towards minimalism, I love surrounding myself with the treasures I collect. I feel like my personality comes through— happy, playful, a little traditional, cozy, functional.

ARIEL GORDON |

ARIEL GORDON |

You did such a great job creating a kidfriendly environment without sacrificing style! How did you do it?

I think bright colors and fun patterns can help a grown-up space feel kidfriendly. But just because I have a boy doesn’t mean I’m limited to baby blue. I have rainbow throw blankets and neon wood toys. I drape pom poms around the house, bright bins from Senegal double as toy storage. Cozy Moroccan rugs are underfoot and add warmth while we read books. There are lots of soft places to snuggle up and play. Do you have a favorite room in your home?

MINI |

I love our kitchen. It’s the hub of our house where people always end up congregating. We’ve set up the breakfast nook as a little playroom for Luca. Lately, I’ll be cooking dinner and he’ll sit there with his own set of pots and pans (our real pots and pans) cooking right along with me. Other times I turn around and he’ll be quietly reading a book, turning the pages all on his own. Something about that just kills me.

ARIEL GORDON |

What are some of your favorite elements in your home?

MINI |

My good friend Krista Ewart is an interior designer and she helped me make a few custom pieces for the house. I think custom headboards, ottomans, or benches in fun prints and colors go a long way towards making a house feel like a home.

ARIEL GORDON |

I love to travel and I have a lot of fun trinkets I’ve picked up along the way that I incorporated in to the house— a giant room diffuser from Coqui Coqui in Tulum, a porcelain happy Buddha from Beijing, a toy car from Paris, beautiful pottery from Tokyo.

will stop crying, without fail. He digs in the dirt, collects snail shells, smells the flowers. It’s amazing watching him discover the world.

Where do you spend the most time in your home?

ARIEL GORDON |

MINI |

Luca loves a bedtime story, so we spend a lot of time in his rocker cuddling and reading books. He grabs the pages and stares at them intently. Who knows what he’s absorbing at 15 months, but he can tell if a book is upside down or right side up and I feel like that’s something.

ARIEL GORDON |

He also loves flowers. Any time he is upset, if I take him outside and walk in the garden he

Where have you seen the biggest changes in your life since becoming a mom?

MINI |

Motherhood has been a whirlwind for me. When Luca was only six days old, my own beautiful mom was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away a short three months later. I’m so lucky I got to spend those months together with her, my family, and Luca. Becoming a mother and losing my own in the same moment in life was a true test. She was my best friend and my rock and her strength as a woman inspired me to stand tall for Luca. Even though her death was devastating, I had to stay solid and take care of this little new person who was counting on me.

a slightly Mexican feel to me; it reminds me of an Ottami weaving. Luca appreciates all of the animals and adults appreciate the soft gray and white color scheme. What are your favorite elements in his room?

MINI |

The wallpaper! When we’re getting ready for bed, he points out the different animals on the wall and makes all of their noises (bark, chirp, tweet, roar, sqwak). We also have a few personal items throughout the nursery that make it feel special— a little silver teething bell that was my husband’s from when he was born, the Moroccan wedding blanket on the bed was a gift at our wedding, a stack of my favorite books that I saved from my childhood, a little porcelain Peter Pan and Tinkerbell that belonged to my mom that I remember playing with as a child. One of my favorite childhood books is “The Little Prince” so we have a painting with a quote on the wall.

ARIEL GORDON |

Talk to us about your son’s room. What inspired you in creating this space?

MINI |

I knew I was having a boy, but I didn’t want anything too gender specific. I didn’t want to feel pigeonholed by color or theme. I wanted something that was whimsical and playful while still feeling elevated and refined. I wanted one big statement element (the wallpaper), so I went with a neutral crib and rocker that blend in and serve as good foundations. The simple lacquered white dresser used to be mine and I repurposed it by putting a changing tray on top.

ARIEL GORDON |

The nursery doubles as a guest room, so I also needed it to feel playful but not too juvenile. I think that the wallpaper goes a long way to accomplish this. It has

How about some of your favorite pieces in his wardrobe?

MINI |

Finding cute baby boy’s clothes that don’t say “Daddy’s Little Slugger” is harder than you’d think. There is a real hole in the baby boy clothing market. My favorite pieces tend to be neutral (blue, grey, white) with a fun print

(stripes, polka dots, stars). Every once in a while, I have been known to shop for him in the girl’s department. I’m pretty resourceful. As a jewelry designer, what would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

MINI |

I work from home in the morning until 10, but that means I miss more bedtimes than I would like. I feel guilty when I’m working. I feel guilty when I’m with the baby because I’m distracted by an email that needs my attention. I definitely feel depleted at the end of every day. The person that gets the shortest end of the stick is my amazing husband; I wish it weren’t that way. But even though the struggle is real, it’s mine and I’m proud of what I’ve built. I want my son to grow up seeing what a strong working woman looks like. A woman shouldn’t have to choose between being a mom or business owner. We get to do both. It’s just exhausting.

ARIEL GORDON |

What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?

MINI |

I don’t really have a choice, I just do it. I don’t do it alone though. My husband is the most loving and committed dad. My team at AGJ runs a tight ship when I can’t be there. It really does take a village. I didn’t have any childcare until Luca was eight months old. Before that, I would just bring him to the studio with me. Once he started crawling, I knew I needed more hands on deck. Now I’ve got an amazing nanny who helps me. I bring her to the studio with Luca so I can still see him during the day, but I can also get work done.

ARIEL GORDON |

MINI |

What is your greatest joy of motherhood?

Seeing my boys laughing together is pretty magical. Hearing him call out “mama”

ARIEL GORDON |

and run in to my arms is pretty much the best. Knowing that I put a person on this planet and that I will guide him to be a good man who is strong, funny, brave, gentle, and emotional is all I can ask for. Tell us about some of your favorite jewelry pieces right now.

MINI |

ARIEL GORDON |

The Medallion Signet necklace.

I put it on. Luca twirls his fingers around it while he’s nursing which is really just the sweetest. Has your style changed at all since becoming a mom?

MINI |

Less shoes that require buckles or laces. If I can’t put it on with a baby in one arm then I ain’t wearing it.

ARIEL GORDON |

What are your simple steps to looking put together on little time?

MINI |

Eyelash extensions are a new mom’s secret weapon. I don’t wear any makeup unless I have an appointment and eyelash extensions do so much to open up my face. They are a bit self-indulgent but I figure it’s worth it since they have such staying power.

ARIEL GORDON |

Where do you like to shop for yourself and your son?

MINI |

Living in LA, I’m lucky to have a lot of friends who are designers who let me place personals. I’m also lucky to have access to an endless stream of sample sales. I have a hard time paying retail for something. The one thing I do splurge on is handbags. Accessories make the outfit. I do a lot of Luca’s shopping online, mostly late at night while nursing. I have a hard time spending more than $15 on a single item since he’ll grow out of it so quickly, so inevitably I buy a lot of his clothes from Baby Gap, Old Navy, Zara Kids, H&M.

ARIEL GORDON |

Perhaps it’s because I have a baby boy, but lately my trademark delicate jewelry has become a bit more substantial. I wanted this necklace to look like a vintage Italian charm necklace that a man would wear when he’s boating off the Amalfi coast. It’s hand engraved with my son’s name which gives it an heirloom feel. I haven’t taken it off since

If you could give your son one piece of advice, what would it be?

MINI |

You control your destiny. It’s up to you to build the life that you want for yourself. If you’re unhappy, chart a new course. You get to choose what you do, where you do it, how you do it. You know what’s right for you.

ARIEL GORDON |

Tell us about Studio McGee’s new space!

When we first launched Studio McGee, our office was located in a really cool old building downtown. However, the location was a little sketchy and we outgrew the space pretty quickly – at one point, we had 2 people at each desk in a tiny little room! We searched for months to find a new space and found a brand new building that was occupied on the bottom floor, but not built out on the second. I walked in, saw all the windows and was immediately sold. We built it out and true to our aesthetic kept it really light and bright. White walls, whitewashed wood floors and brass lights – it’s the perfect environment for creating. One of my favorite features is the wall-to-wall sample library with a rolling ladder! SHEA MCGEE |

How would you describe Studio McGee’s aesthetic?

MINI |

Our style is bright, clean and collected. We love to keep things fresh by mixing pieces from different styles and eras. And although I hate the phrase “pop of color,” I really do love a neutral palette with hints of color mixed in! SHEA MCGEE |

What is it like to work with your husband?

MINI |

I might sound crazy, but it is a really great setup for us. Of course working with your spouse can be challenging, but it is also really rewarding too. We are a team through and through. A good teammate communicates well and doesn’t hog the ball. You have to trust and rely on each other’s strengths to make it work. Syd never picks out tile and I don’t develop project management systems, but we still always have the same goals in mind. SHEA MCGEE |

You’re building a design empire with two little Minis of your own! How do manage the balance between career and motherhood?

MINI |

It can be quite overwhelming to balance a career and motherhood. I find that it is best to not be too set in how things should be, but just constantly adjust to the needs of your family and work. Attempting to keep a schedule is also really crucial to juggling it all! Thankfully, the flexibility that comes from owning our own business has allowed me to chase my dreams and still get lots of time with my kids. I have to be a master of multitasking and okay with working late nights after the babes go to sleep. The good news is that I love what I do, so work doesn’t really feel like work! SHEA MCGEE |

Has your approach to design changed at all since becoming a mom?

MINI |

I think I am much more aware of what “kid friendly” means now! Before, I was essentially guessing. Now my home is definitely a testing ground for what survives and doesn’t. This has been really helpful because the large majority of our clients have kids. SHEA MCGEE |

What do you think is essential in creating kid-friendly yet chic spaces?

MINI |

Assess what pieces of furniture get the most use and make them durable, but then take a little risk with a few of the other pieces. That way, you get both function and a few standout pieces. Go safe on the main sofa, splurge on pillows and consider a round coffee table because they are beautiful without looking “kid-proof ”. SHEA MCGEE |

been as big of a change in our lifestyle as it was with our first. I think the biggest difference is that having a baby forces you to slow down and be at home more which has actually been a really good thing for our family. What advice would you give to a parent getting ready to have their second child?

MINI |

If you thought you were good at multitasking before, get ready to become even better! And be prepared to allot 30 extra minutes—at least—to get out the door! SHEA MCGEE |

Tell us the story behind your kids names.

MINI |

Wren was a name I heard a long time ago and it just stuck with me. I love that it’s the name for a little bird and that’s exactly how I think of her— staying close by her mama, but always looking for opportunities to discover independence. Ivy was my great grandmother’s name. SHEA MCGEE |

What are some of your favorite pieces to include in kids rooms?

MINI |

I like kids rooms to have personality and I usually try to do that through really great artwork and rugs. Baskets for storage are always a must in every kids space we design. SHEA MCGEE |

How has life changed for you since becoming a mom of two?

MINI |

The transition to two kids has been much easier for me than the transition to one. I think that since we are already in kid mode it hasn’t SHEA MCGEE |

You moved from California to Utah. Tell us about the transition.

MINI |

It goes without saying that we miss the beach and our friends in California a lot. I won’t lie and say it has been an easy transition. It has been challenging to make friends because we are so focused on growing our business. However, we do love that my family lives really close. We also really enjoy getting all four seasons. SHEA MCGEE |

What do you think is the greatest struggle of motherhood?

MINI |

Nurturing your family and still finding time to nurture yourself. SHEA MCGEE |

What is your greatest joy of motherhood?

MINI |

Nothing is better than a baby looking into your eyes and snuggling on your shoulder or watching your child experience both big and little victories. SHEA MCGEE |

Let’s talk style! What is your goto ensemble or daily uniform?

MINI |

That’s easy! Rag and Bone jeans, pointy flats and a Madewell blouse or button-up. So easy to dress up or down! SHEA MCGEE |

Has your style changed since becoming a mom?

MINI |

I wear a lot more activewear even when I’m not going to the gym! There are so many cute options out there it’s easy to still look put together, but comfortable. SHEA MCGEE |

Since you’ve just welcomed your second baby, what baby gear are you getting the most use out of right now?

MINI |

The Ergobaby 360, Baby Jogger City Select double stroller and the Nuna PIPA car seat! SHEA MCGEE |

K A I T LY N K I R B Y

How has your home changed since you became a mom?

MINI |

I swore I would not sacrifice my design style for my kids. My veteran mom friends used to laugh and say, “you wait until your kids destroy your house.” I definitely have had to make changes. I used to have cloth-covered kitchen chairs and swapped them out for the Eames plastic chairs after scrubbing spills every night after dinner. But overall, I’ve taught my kids to take care of “mom’s things,” as they call them.

ANNALISA THOMAS |

Let’s talk about your kids’ spaces! What inspired you when designing them?

MINI |

I design a lot of rooms working for Oilo, so my kids’ room seemed to be neglected for a long time. I’ve slowly been working on their rooms and did my daughter’s first, mostly because she was so excited, whereas my boys barely raised an eyebrow when I mentioned a re-design. She loves pink and I love gold, so it was easy to come up with the color palette. She loved going with me to look for accessories [and was] actually the one that begged for the sheepskin rug. I would NEVER have bought that without her negotiating skills. She has an

ANNALISA THOMAS |

How would you describe your home— the look, the feel?

MINI |

I’ve always loved white with lots of natural light. My husband and I have built two homes since we’ve been married and each time we’ve done white cabinets. Now everyone is doing white, but ten years ago everyone thought we were crazy.

ANNALISA THOMAS |

MINI |

Which rooms see the most use?

The kitchen and family room definitely get the most use. If I’m in the kitchen (which seems like a lot of the time) then the kids usually bring their toys to the family room and play there.

amazing circular gold mirror that I absolutely love! I’ve been tempted to steal it for my entry multiple times, but she won’t part with it… yet. As the founder of Oilo, what do you think is absolutely essential when designing a nursery?

MINI |

Babies don’t need a lot. People stress and stress over every little detail, but the first year is really about making sure mom feels relaxed and comfortable in that room since the baby doesn’t have a clue. I definitely recommend a good glider and side table— moms spend an incredible amount of hours nursing and rocking a baby.

ANNALISA THOMAS |

MINI |

What do you think is the biggest

misconception about nursery design? It’s okay to put plants or fragile items in the room in the beginning. Make it a space you love. You’ll be spending a lot of time in there and constantly altering the space as the baby goes through different stages. Plants and breakable items will need to be removed or moved up higher, but it is nice to have a great space while your baby is tiny and not mobile.

ANNALISA THOMAS |

You’re now expecting a new baby! How are you preparing?

MINI |

This is my last baby and it’s a boy, so I’m designing a new pattern for his room. I’m also trying to sleep as much as possible and [make] freezer meals! I’ve al-

ANNALISA THOMAS |

Believe it or not, I’ve never bought maternity clothes. I live in leggings or maxi skirts and dresses.

MINI |

Has your approach to style changed since becoming a mom?

ANNALISA THOMAS |

How is this pregnancy different than your others?

MINI |

I used to always wear heels. I now own mostly flats, tennis shoes, t-shirts and jeans.

ANNALISA THOMAS |

MINI |

What do you think is the greatest

Every pregnancy is rough emotionally and physically especially during the first trimester. I get really bad morning sickness and it really takes a toll on my family. My husband who is the CEO of Oilo has to work full-time and take care of the kids since I’m so sick the first trimester.

How do you balance running Oilo and being a mom?

MINI |

My husband is the only way I could balance being a mother and business owner. We don’t have a nanny or childcare so we are swapping our schedules a lot so someone is always with the kids. It’s crazy sometimes, but it works for us.MINI | What is your favorite part of motherhood?

ANNALISA THOMAS |

I love the stage I’m in right now. When I had my first baby I fought to keep my identity. I refused to let my kids alter my style or my hobbies, but by my third I seemed to let that go. The fact was my life was different; it wasn’t just me. I couldn’t just jump in my car and go anymore, but I realized that was okay. My oldest is turning nine this year and I can see now more than ever how fast that time went. And now that my two-year old is in the thick of the terrible two’s, I know this time

ANNALISA THOMAS |

around that his whines and tantrums won’t last forever and focus more on his cute hugs kisses and silliness. What is your favorite time of day with your little ones?

MINI |

I don’t love to cook, but I love sitting down and eating a homemade dinner together. I light candles, fold the napkins and try to make it different from their other meals, which are usually quicker and not together as a family.

ANNALISA THOMAS |

If you could give your kids one piece of advice, what would it be?

MINI |

I’m a believer in hard work. We live in a rural area where kids grow up around horses and farms so the kids are good little workers. I want my kids to know that money is not easy to come by and it takes a lot of hard work.

We’re thrilled to be strolling with you today! Give us your idea of the perfect day with your daughter.

MINI |

We would brunch, spend a few hours at a museum, get some ice cream, then to a bookstore, and end the day with eating dinner by the TV watching a movie. BONNIE TSANG |

You’ve said you wouldn’t pick up a camera if it wasn’t for your daughter. Tell us how she inspires you.

MINI |

I started taking pictures when my daughter was born— just like every parent, I couldn’t stop snapping photos of my newborn. My little girl, Venise, is very artistic, confident and wise. Just by watching how she’s not afraid to make art alone would give me energy to do better with mine. BONNIE TSANG |

Now expecting your second child, what are you most looking forward to about having a new baby?

MINI |

BONNIE TSANG |

The journey of raising a little one. A journey that fills with excitement, challenges and laughter.

We love following along with your #BonnieEatsfor2 hashtag on Instagram! What have you been eating a lot of during this pregnancy?

MINI |

Bone broth soup! Some mornings, I’d add a variety of vegetables and eat it for breakfast and [other times], I’ll make noodles or dumplings with it. BONNIE TSANG |

MINI |

Any strong pregnancy cravings?

BONNIE TSANG |

Spicy food!

Oh, there are so many— Dinette, Gjelina, Hatchet Hall, Ostrich Farm, Petit Trois, Terroni, Valerie Confections... BONNIE TSANG |

What do you think is the greatest struggle of motherhood?

MINI |

To realize that it’s OK to be you and not the type of mom according to others. BONNIE TSANG |

What do you love most about motherhood?

MINI |

My favorite of all is having a mini partner in crime to explore life with. BONNIE TSANG |

How do you manage to keep up with your successful photography career and motherhood?

MINI |

Do one thing and focus on one thing at a time, ask for help (even from my kid!) and manage time. BONNIE TSANG |

How do you anticipate your career will shift to accommodate a new baby?

MINI |

I’ve learned not to overwhelm myself by asking questions of the unknown and to manage things as they come. I anticipate to do more with my career, to expand my brand as I’ve matured even more since my first child. BONNIE TSANG |

Where do you look for inspiration, career-wise? Any favorite reads, blogs, favorite photographers?

MINI |

I like to go to galleries, museums and flea markets a lot and I always feel inspired afterward. BONNIE TSANG |

Let’s talk personal style. What is your daily “uniform” or your typical ensemble?

MINI |

Plain white tee, jeans and a pair of Converse. BONNIE TSANG |

Which baby gear do you anticipate you will use most?

We’re so thrilled to have you as our Mini cover mom! Let’s talk yoga, since we’re here in your studio. How often are you here every week? HILARIA BALDWIN | I try to practice yoga every day, even if that means doing a little tummy time with my son or playing around with Carmen. MINI | Give us the rundown of your daily fitness routine. HB | I split my workouts into three parts: toning (for all the fine details), yoga (for leanness and flexibility), and cardio (for lung health, stamina, and fat burning). I run four miles about four to five times per week. I go to barre classes for toning or do random exercises around the house (just look through her Instagram, @ HilariaBaldwin!) or in my environment that I can fit in between work and being a mommy. Yoga is my passion. Stretching and breathing into the body daily is essential for health, circulation, stress relief and lean muscles. MINI | What do your workouts look like while pregnant? Do you make any changes? HB | I try to keep my workouts as similar as possible to when I am not pregnant. Obviously I need to slow down a bit, but the idea is to still feel like a normal person! I eventually shift running to jogging then jogging to power walking, elliptical, and swimming. Yoga and barre classes I maintain throughout, just modifying for my growing belly and avoiding twisting, core work, laying on my belly and back. Strengthening your body while you workout is essential. Not only will it help you bounce MINI |

back quicker once you deliver, but you will also have a stronger pregnancy. My feet don’t swell because I stay active. Always ask your doctor of course. MINI | What yoga poses are great for moms-tobe? HB | Lots of cat cow, pigeon, down dog (especially if you get restless leg syndrome or suffer from swollen legs and feet). MINI | How about your diet? What is your typical breakfast, lunch, dinner right now? HB | I usually eat cereal with Carmen in the morning or I make whole grain pancakes with no syrup—I add bananas into the batch. Lunch is some sort of salad with protein and whole grains like quinoa. Dinner is with my husband and kids. Lots of vegan dishes or occasional fresh fish and veggies. Tons of water throughout the day. Coconut water in the morning and at night. MINI | What does your diet look like while pregnant? HB | I eat slightly more, I listen to my body. I started adding in fish and eggs when I am pregnant and breast-feeding. My doctor asked me to and I found it complimented my state very well. You don’t need that many more calories while pregnant, so pay close attention to how much you eat. Overeating can make you feel more sluggish, which you can already feel while pregnant. Energize yourself by feeding your body right and with good portions. MINI | Let’s talk babies. How was your second pregnancy different from your first? HB | I felt less morning sickness with Rafa than

Fears, Explained

“My fears truly began when I gave birth,” Baldwin says. “Because now I have parts of my soul on the outside of my body.”

Carmen. But he really was eating me out of house and home, so I found I had to keep even more small meals coming throughout the day. My body changed very differently as well. I had a much more full, womanly figure with Carmen than Rafa…. He really was taking everything that went in! MINI | What surprised you most about motherhood? HB | It’s such a blast! I think you get worried about how you will lose your life as you knew it. To be honest, you do in many ways. But it is so worth it. And I love it. MINI | What do you think is the greatest struggle of motherhood? HB | How much fear I have now. When I was pregnant with Carmen, I was sure that my life was going to get less stressful once she was delivered. I was so wrong! My fears truly M I N I s p r i n g ‘16

began when I gave birth, because now I have parts of my soul on the outside of my body. I never want anything to happen to them. I am learning to let go and not fuel my parenting with fear. I deal with it on my own, as to not load it on my babies. MINI | How would you define your parenting style? HB | I am pretty laid back for the most part, but I am strict where I need to be. I let them explore, I choose my battles carefully. I don’t want my kids to constantly hear “no,” so I take a deep breath and always give them options. MINI | How do you and Alec make a great team, parenting-wise? HB | Lots of communication! MINI | What has changed the most for you since becoming a mom? HB | Everything. My life is unrecognizable. My entire life revolves around my babies. I do make time for my husband. Fostering our relationship is extraordinarily important to maintaining a happy home and family. He always tells me that he doesn’t just want me to be his wife, he wants me to be his girlfriend too. MINI | What was your reaction or first thought when you found out about Baby #3? HB | Excited and nervous. It’s going be wonderful having them so close together, but I fear I’ll never sleep again! MINI | What do you anticipate will be the biggest change having three kids?

Just balancing three. I want them to all feel special and that they have individual attention. I hope I will be able to accomplish showering them all with love, patience, and care. MINI | Rafa is still too little to grasp it, but how are you preparing Carmen for the new baby? HB | Carmen has done this before and was so excited for Rafael to come. She tells me that I have a baby in my belly and she does too. She loves to talk to him and kiss him. She is so sweet. MINI | What advice would you give a mom about to welcome her second child? HB | Have a sense of humor, take it one day at a time. Give lots of attention to your eldest child while making sure you bond with your baby. Include your older child in helping you with the baby. The new addition is “our baby.” I got great advice when Rafael was born: Say “no” to him every once in a while or tell him to be gentle with Carmen so that Carmen feels taken care of. Even though the infant doesn’t understand, it’s good for the older kid to feel that things are fair. MINI | What baby gear are you using most right now? We’d love to know your go-tos! HB | Carmen uses the Bugaboo Cameleon. Rafael uses the Inglesina stroller. I love the Maclaren and UPPAbaby double strollers to wheel both around and the Ergobaby carrier I have used for both babies. Love the Boba Baby Wrap too. HB |

How are you teaching your kids Spanish? HB | Carmen’s first language is Spanish. Her English is very good too, but her Spanish is dominant. It is because I only speak to her in Spanish. I will speak in English if Alec is included in the conversation or someone else who doesn’t speak Spanish. She will learn English with her father and in school. MINI | What do you love most about being a mom? HB | How much I laugh with my kids! They crack me up all the time. Their imaginations, interactions, gestures, things that come out of their mouth. They are spectacular. MINI | Let’s talk style. What is your typical ensemble? HB | Something cozy that I can move in. I am very much yoga studio to street. In the winter, you see me with yoga pants, heeled boots, and a sweater. In the summer, flip flops, shorts, and tank tops. I throw on a dress and apply some makeup for red carpets, but I will be unzipping it in our elevator on the way up to our apartment to get comfy again! MINI |

Restauranteur power couple Matt and Marissa Hermer have succeeded in building a London empire (including Bumpkin, Boujis, Eclipse, and Top Dog) that foodies both know and love. Now the Ladies of London star invites Mini inside to discuss the Hermer family’s other fantastic creations—an impeccably designed former mews house in Chelsea and a growing family ready to welcome baby number three.

Congratulations on your little one on the way! What were your first thoughts when you learned you were pregnant? MARISSA HERMER | We wanted to grow our family and we had a few difficulties between Max and Jake so when we found out we were pregnant with this babe, we were thrilled. MINI | How are you preparing your two sons for a new baby in the house? MARISSA HERMER | We were planning to move Jake out of his bedroom and into Max’s bedroom (where we’ve built a couple bunkbeds) in April, so the boys have a month to acclimate to sharing a room before the babe comes. But last night, Jake unbuttoned his sleeping bag, climbed out of his crib on his own, opened the door and walked up the stairs to our bedroom— so now we have to move him into a big bed much sooner than expected as it appears he has had enough of the crib! It all seems to be happening and as [always], never according to plan. MINI | Tell us how this pregnancy has been different from your first two. MARISSA HERMER | This pregnancy has been complicated from the start. At about six weeks, I started bleeding and now have both placenta previa and placenta accreta. I’m now on bedrest in my final trimester and just counting down MINI |

the days until we can meet our little munchkin. MINI | Dressing the bump can be a challenge. What are you living in these days? MARISSA HERMER | Thank goodness for Nine in the Mirror— it is my one-stop shop for the clothes that I want to wear that fit the bump. And for Hatch— which I’ve worn throughout all of my pregnancies (and before and after). [They are] beautiful clothes that I actually want to wear when I’m not pregnant too! MINI | What are your tips for staying chic while pregnant? MARISSA HERMER | Just because I’m pregnant, it isn’t an excuse to wear activewear all day, every day (as hard as it is to resist). I feel better when I am dressed for the

day, and not wearing leggings all the time. MINI | Have you started purchasing new clothing for the baby? MARISSA HERMER | I have! I love MORI for the softest cuddliest onesies and Madeleine Thompson makes the softest cashmere baby blankets. MINI | How about baby gear? MARISSA HERMER | I haven’t bought anything— eek!

But I have kept everything, so it is on my list to get it taken out of the basement and brought out for round three. I do love the massive Bugaboo pram— it is enormous, but I can pile at least one other child on it as well as grocery shopping. It is like my own little Sherpa. MINI | How are you designing this little one’s nursery?

We’ve just moved Jake out of the nursery and into Max’s room. I’m getting the rocking chair’s cushions cleaned and a few new accessories but otherwise, the room has been used as a nursery for both Max and Jake, so it is ready to go! MINI | Tell us how you keep your home stylish, yet kid-friendly. MARISSA HERMER | When we were building this house, we knew we wanted it to be a family

house, not a house where children were only allowed in certain rooms, but where everyone felt comfortable. Of course, that means goldfish crumbs get into my gorgeous carpet, but early on in the design process, I learned that lots of color splashes help to hide spots, fabrics with texture hide Play-Doh smudges and splurging on quality leather actually means that it looks better as it ages (with some sticky cupcake greasy handprints).

MARISSA HERMER |

What are some of your favorite elements in your kids spaces? MARISSA HERMER | I’ve always loved Roald Dahl books as a child and Quentin Blake was my favorite illustrator, so I was thrilled to discover the Zagazoo wallpaper in Max and Jake’s room. I also loved the F.S. Schumacher Balloons in the nursery so much, I had it shipped from the States. MINI | As a soon-to-be mom of three, how do you balance career and motherhood? MARISSA HERMER | Balance is a tricky word as it means there is a equal amount given to career and motherhood in a scheduled format. I don’t have balance at all. I just give time to what needs it the most at that moment. If I’ve got a big work project, that is going to get my attention. When my kiddies need my attention, [they get it]. MINI | How will your work schedule shift once the baby arrives? MARISSA HERMER | I’ve never been good at making baby plans as to be honest, I never know how it is going to be, what my baby will need at the time, and what I will need. We will just take it as it comes. That said, I’ve never been able to take a maternity leave as, with anyone who owns her own business, you can’t really put an ‘Out of Office’ email on. Work continues as life does— it just is a case of finding time to do it all and having a very good support team in the office! MINI |

Favorite Top Dog menu items during this pregnancy‚ go! MARISSA HERMER | I have so many. I love our fried pickles and our KFC (Kentucky Fried Cauliflower), our truffle mac and cheese is a knockout, and I always have to get a salted caramel shake with my chili cheese dog. MINI | What’s up next for the Hermer family? MARISSA HERMER | I’m currently writing a cookbook, so I’m always testing new recipes on my family. I think I’ve nailed the perfect lasagna recipe, but only after feeding different recipes to my family for a couple weeks straight. I think they need a break from lasagna for awhile. MINI |

FA S T FA C T S FAVORITE KID-FRIENDLY LONDON LOCALE My kids love Maggie & Rose and nothing beats feeding the ducks in Hyde Park. GUILTY PLEASURE Sea salt dark chocolate. I have an entire shelf in our pantry dedicated to the stuff. MORNING ROUTINE Hot water, squeeze of lemon, and a sprinkle of ginger, then a green juice of cucumber, celery, and ginger. FAVORITE KIDS MOVIE Toy Story. FAVORITE LOCAL KIDS SHOP CdeC by Cordelia de Castellane. SIGNATURE SCENT I mix between Chanel Gardenia and Kai. BEST PARENTING ADVICE Don’t compare yourself to other parents. Everyone does it differently. One way isn’t better than the other. Do what works for you. THE BEST BABY SHOWER GIFT TO GIVE A spa afternoon! FAVORITE KIDS BOOK A Fish Out of Water by Helen Palmer and all of the Richard Scarry collections. BEDTIME ROUTINE Bathtime, lotion and pajamas, bit of hide and seek with Daddy, bedtime stories and lights out!

Dean’s Wife Maya Husband and wife duo Dean and Maya Jankelowitz opened Soho bistro Jack’s Wife Freda in 2011. The restaurant vets named the first location (they’ve since opened a second on Carmine Street in the West Village) as a nod to Dean’s grandmother and continue to hit it out of the park with their deep sense of hospitality, playful sense of humor and familiar twists on everyday food. Mini popped inside to chat with the Jankelowitz clan on the in’s and out’s of everyday life as businessowners and the parents of two young sons, Noam and Benjamin. photography by

For our readers who don’t know, tell us about Jack and Freda. MAYA JANKELOWITZ | Jack and Freda were my husband Dean’s grandparents. Dean grew up in South Africa and his grandmother Freda was an incredible host, always having family, friends, even a couple strangers over. Freda was very accommodating, very warm— and always [had] lots of food. We named the restaurant in their honor. MINI | How often do your kids get to hang out or eat here? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | The kids school is around the corner from our Carmine street location, so we often stop by on way home from school, hang out in the office, eat fries. MINI | Your current favorites on the menu— go! MAYA JANKELOWITZ | The Breakfast Bowl at Lafayette is our latest addition and my current fave— poached eggs or soft scrambled in a bowl with red quinoa, spaghetti squash, kale, grilled tomatoes and avocado. And I love the Avocado Toast at our Carmine location that is topped with smoked salmon and micro green salad. MINI | How about your kids favorites? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | Our kids are not the most adventurous, so we offer a simple kids menu inspired by them. You know, chicken tenders, fish sticks, sliders, mac and cheese. MINI |

We know you’re busy keeping up with two kids and two locations! How do you manage the day-today balance of career and motherhood? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | Wing it! Wake up early (in a storm), fly through the day. Moments of up, moments of down, and carry on. Lots of order within the chaos though. MINI | How has your approach to work changed since you became a mom? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | More mindful, more thoughtful, more understanding, and lots of patience. I feel like when people step inside the restaurant, they step inside our home. MINI |

MINI |

What do you think is the greatest challenge of motherhood? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | Right now (my kids are 8 and 4), I am challenged with helping them deal with their feelings and figuring out the best ways to get them to engage cooperation. MINI | How about the greatest challenge of raising boys? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | They’re BOYS! And I’m the only girl in the house, enough said.

What would you say is the one thing about parenting that no one really warns you about? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | The whole thing. Personally, I had had no warnings or preparation. But the kind of love that’s brought into your life is the highest feeling. MINI | Do you and your husband play different roles when it comes to parenting? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | It flip flops. We’re working towards the same page. We are learning every day

and understanding that life is changing, being open minded to go with the flow and accept. MINI | We love your style! Run us through your go-to ensemble. MAYA JANKELOWITZ | I love clothes and love dressing up. The restaurant is the perfect stage for my outfits. Juggling [Jack’s Wife Freda] and being a mom is the challenge though, making sure I’m still comfy and can run around in a fun look!

You and your husband are restauranteurs, so we have to ask! What other restaurants in the city do you love? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | Gemma in the Bowery Hotel, Café Mogador, Blue Ribbon Sushi, Strip House on 12th Street, Sant Ambroeus on Lafayette. MINI | Your Top 5 places in NYC to visit with the kids— go! MAYA JANKELOWITZ | Times Square, Central Park,

MINI |

MINI |

Madison Square Garden, Natural History Museum and Coney Island. MINI | What do you love about raising your kids in NYC? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | The diversity, culture, seasons, and soft serve ice cream trucks all over in the summer. MINI | What is your greatest joy in parenting? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | My husband just texted this Anatole Broyard quote to me yesterday and it made me think— “When you look back over life, the thing that amazes you the most is your original capacity to believe. To grow older is to lose this capacity, to stop believing, or to become, unable to believe.” My family keeps me believing. MINI | If we asked your kids what they want to be when they grow up, what would they say? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | The little one, Bennie, said he wants to be a WII-U player—that’s the modern-day Nintendo systems. The big one, Noam, said he wants to be a professional sports player. MINI | What is the best parenting advice you’ve received? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | There is a direct connection between how kids feel and how kids behave. Children need to have their feelings accepted and respected just like grown-ups. And most

importantly, [don’t] push the unhappy or angry feelings— the more comfortably you can accept the bad feelings, the easier it is for the kids to let go of them. I guess I’m saying, if you want to have a happy family, you’d better be prepared to permit the expression of a lot of unhappiness. MINI | We know you have a busy schedule, but if there were more hours in the day, what would you do? MAYA JANKELOWITZ | Make a great breakfast.

FA S T FA C T S SIGNATURE SCENT My kids clothes and sheets. I guess it’s just the laundry smell. CAN’T STOP LISTENING TO The whole playlist I make for the restaurant. I am always adding music and everything we play is very personal or has some story about where it came from. Lots of soundtracks from favorite movies and lots of Rodriguez. FAVORITE KIDS BOOK Currently Diary of a Wimpy Kid. FAVORITE KIDS MOVIE Star Wars. They’ve seen all seven and can engage in deep conversations about the force versus the dark side. GUILTY PLEASURE Hu chocolates. IDEAL DATE NIGHT Dinner, a movie and walking the city streets. ITEMS IN MY MY HANDBAG THAT SAY I’M A MOM Paw Patrol Band-Aids, Vicks rub, sippy cups and baby wipes.
