Happy spring! Everything is in now bloom— including my new family! I’m so excited to share that this is my first editor’s letter I’m writing as a parent myself. My husband and I welcomed our daughter, Penelope, in February and we couldn’t be happier! Having added a new Mini to our mix and prepping this year’s spring issue, I’ve been busy, to say the least— but it’s all been worth it! This issue is full of inspiring parents from cover mom Tiffani Thiessen (Yes, ‘90s kids, that’s Kelly Kapowski!) to designers Heidi Merrick and Grace Lee. Not only do they have words of wisdom to share, but they’ve opened up their home and studio spaces for an even deeper look into their busy lives! I want my kids to be kind, compassionate people, so I try to teach them by example.

The worries are endless as a parent, right? I think them staying healthy is the most wanted for both my husband and I.

Finding balance. As a working mom, I always want to make sure I am giving all of the things I love the attention that each needs. Family is number one, of course, and [my] career comes second. Both are demanding as we know.

Tell us how you decided on your kids names.
MINI |
We always had Holt as our boy name. It’s a family name on Brady’s dad’s side. We [also] always liked the name Harper. My mom came up with Renn, her middle name, which was special since my middle name was given to me by my grandmother as well.

As a busy mom, what does your skincare situation look like?
MINI |
What surprised you most about motherhood?
MINI |
A facial at least once a month. I’m also a believer that water intake and sunscreen are super important. I wash my face twice daily (at least). My grandmother taught me that the best thing you can do for your skin is moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! And if you saw her at 91, you would be a believer too.

It used to be the library/bar in the house. Neither my husband or I thought it was a room that we used or needed, so I had the idea to change it slightly and make it into the kids’ playroom. It’s a room that is now used every day and pretty much all day. Lots of smiles come out of that room. You could say it’s the happiest place in the house.

It has a lot of old charm and character. It was built in 1923 and has some Hollywood history to it. We have been restoring it, room by room, giving it a modern update without taking away the beautiful aesthetic it was given.

Looking outside, how did you decide to take on chickens? Do they have names?

I love so many rooms in our house. My kitchen, of course (because it’s where I get to create as well as connect with my family during meal time), the kids’ rooms are so beautiful and our big family room where we watch movies together and snuggle. And then there is our bathroom which is a place of fun with the kids at bath time, as well as peace for mommy when the kids are asleep.

My family pictures, old and new, are probably my most treasured. Harper’s artwork is also a personal favorite, as well as the antiques, like my dad’s childhood bible that resides on my dresser and my many cookbooks that I have collected over the years in my kitchen.

Tell us about your kids playroom. What inspired you in creating their spaces?

It was all my husband’s doing. He came to me and said, “Babe, we both were raised having chickens, so I think we need chickens.” I told him, “Sure, I’m all in. But you take to the cleaning and I will take to the using of the eggs.” Their names are Mabel, Scarlett, Molly and Dolly, Ruby, Clementine, Matilda and Sugar.

meals do you cook most often for your family? Do you have any that are on constant rotation? Yes! These are always on constant rotation: Roasted chicken, pizzas, grilled cheese, lots of different soups and salads. And of course, anything and everything on the grill.

I don’t spend as much on clothes as I used to. I also go for comfort over fashion now that I am a mom of two, but when I’m out with adults, I do love a pair of good pumps.

Knowing to ask for help. I have always been a person who wanted to do it all herself and now having kids, well... any mom knows that’s impossible.

your home? Where did they come from? My husband Teddy and I both love books. I was an English major in college and though we definitely love our Kindles, we also buy lots of the good old fashioned kind. Our book collection is definitely one of my favorite elements. Wherever we live, it’s such a great physical record of what we were thinking or feeling at any time. I’m also, of course, totally obsessed with beds and bedrooms, and it’s so fun for me to get to design new bedrooms and think of what bedding I want to use. Our new place has an amazing four-poster bed in the master bedroom, and I cannot wait to think of fun ways to style my bedding around the bed. NELL DIAMOND |

We’re in a temporary situation right now, since we’re renovating our home downtown. It’s been around two years of gut renovation, so we are very excited to move in! Our new place has a very classic, old-school feel with some fun modern elements. Think moldings and paneling mixed with neon art pieces. Always my closet. Even in college, when my closet was basically a bunch of Container Store plastic drawers stacked on top of each other. I love to organize and re-organize my clothes and accessories. It’s kind of like my version of meditating!

It was all about the wallpaper! When I found out I was pregnant, I came across this amazing silver Chinoiserie wallpaper with butterflies. Two months later, I found out I was having a boy and decided the wallpaper was a little too gender specific. I knew I still wanted something crazy and fun on the walls, so we went with this amazing green jungle scene. It’s definitely very busy so everything else in the room is staying serene, bright and calming— lots of white furniture.

I’m never going to get over his tiny clothes. Sometimes I look at his little socks and feel like crying. Tiny sweaters, t-shirts and pants. I just die— I could stare at them forever!

I created Hill House Home because I couldn’t find beautifully designed, practical, high quality bedding at a reasonable price point. I wanted to create a fun shopping experience and truly unique products, because buying for your home should be easy, simple, and inspiring. We should all be falling asleep and waking

up in a space that we love, that feels beautiful and special and sacred to us. There’s nothing that makes me happier that a beautifully made bed. It’s instant luxury— like you’re on vacation at the best hotel every night. There is something so magical about beds and bedrooms. They’re the center of the home and they’re a crucial component to our health and wellness. It doesn’t matter how much green juice you drink, or how many times you work out— if you’re not sleeping well, nothing else matters. As the founder of Hill House Home, we have to know— What is your bedtime routine?

Right now, we’re sleep training Henry, so my routine is totally up to him! I always include a 30-minute wind-down period before I actually get in bed: no phone, dimmer lights, no loud music or TV. Usually I’ll wash my face, fold any clothes, tidy up— it’s a quiet time that I crave and a great transition into sleeping. If I just jump straight into bed after doing something stimulating like eating dinner or watching a movie, it’ll take way too long for me to actually fall asleep, so the wind-down period is very needed!

How would you describe your personal style?
MINI |
Super feminine and a little quirky. I love embellishments like lace, embroidery and feathers, and I love to combine unexpected patterns and colors. Recently I’ve been into pastel socks with my less-than-practical collection of velvet shoes! I like to have fun with clothing. I hate feeling like my outfit is boring.

Where do you like to shop?
I’m a big online person! I like Moda Operandi and Net-A-Porter, and I’m very into direct-to-consumer brands like La Ligne. For Henry, I’m obsessed with Maisonette and The Tot. Very excited to try Rockets of Awesome for him, too! For in-person shopping, it doesn’t get better than my friend Claire’s store Fivestory on the Upper East Side.

If anything, I have more fun with clothing since I’m so excited to be able to wear all my old clothes again! I definitely am always just a little bit overdressed wherever I go.

What does your skincare and beauty routine look like?
MINI |
I’m obsessed with the brand Drunk Elephant and I’m also really into Dr. Jart+ moisturizing masks. I never leave the house without sunscreen. My favorite is by my dermatologist, Dr. Gross. I have super dry, sensitive skin, so once I find a product that works, I stick to it! For makeup, I’m super pale and I like to be even paler than I am, so I’m always on the lookout for pale makeup. Right now, I’m loving Koh Gen Do and Nars Chantilly Lace.

What does a typical day look like right now? What time do you get up?
MINI |
Henry is five months old, so no day is really typical right now. He’s just getting adjusted to a real schedule, and Teddy and I are trying to figure out how best to plan our work days so that we get to spend some family time every day. What we aim for is to wake up

always work out like that! What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?
MINI |
It’s only been five months, but honestly the scheduling has been the hardest part! Before having a baby, if I had an extra busy day, I could just play it by ear and stay late to get more done. I really have to plan out my work hours in advance now. The good news is that I’m a lot more productive in the hours I do have because I know that the second I get home, I will not open my computer. I used to come home and work a few more hours after work— now that literally never happens!

around 6 with Henry (though sometimes it’s more like 4…), hang out with him until around 8, then get ready for work and head out. I’m usually at my office from around 9 until 6:30, though I’ll jump around to meetings in the neighborhood a few days a week. While I’m at the office, I’ll check in on the Nest camera and get some pictures from our nanny. I try to schedule any dinners for later now, so that I can put Henry to bed and read to him. That’s the goal schedule, but obviously it does not

What was your first thought when you learned you were pregnant?

The isolation can be really tough, especially toward the end of pregnancy and in the first few weeks back home. I really had to push myself to do normal things,

My strangest moment of joy was the first night Teddy and I went out to dinner after Henry was born. We were just sitting in a cab and we started scrolling through photos of Henry. We’d been so wrapped up in normal newborn craziness that I don’t think we’d taken a minute to just let it sink in. It was a crazy moment to think, “Wow, we created this, and he’s this tiny little perfect human!” A totally insane out of body experience.

I’m a very self-sufficient person and I’m not great at asking for help, but you really need to, especially in the first few weeks and months. You can’t do it all alone! Even small helpful gestures are incredibly helpful and I’m so appreciative to friends and family for helping.

I wake up at 6 AM, do a quick meditation, take the dogs out, wake up my two girls and start preparing breakfast for all of us and lunch for myself. I also organize and prep dinner for that night. Then I do the school run. After drop-off, I shower and have my “me” time. I need my mornings for balance and inspiration; they are sacred to me. I wanted to create this life— the ability to work, but also be a mom and have enough soulful time for myself. I feel so blessed to have my life arranged this way.

Since I had kids, my style has definitely changed. I barely wear heels now except to go out occasionally. The biggest change has come from highly editing my wardrobe. Now it’s much easier to choose what I wear each morning.

Our home is mid-century modern mixed with modern minimalism. After we purchased our home, we took it down to the studs and went through a six month remodel. I was involved in every part of the process from the plans to finishes. I got to design the [home] to my taste and our family’s lifestyle. We have an open floor plan with a lot of windows to maximize the natural light. We put in folding doors along the back of our house that extends our living space into our backyard and allows us to seamlessly enjoy an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. GRACE LEE |
Do you have a favorite room in your home?

My current favorite is our living room. It has a vaulted ceiling and a large front window. It doesn’t have formal seating yet (after the remodel I’ve yet to finish “furnishing” our home), but I love the details thus far. What are some of your favorite elements in your home? Where did they come from?

I love the vintage furniture from my late mother. We also have large canvas photos of the girls throughout our home. I like to capture the girls’ facial expressions at different ages. They grow up so quickly and I want to remember their faces at each of the different stages. GRACE LEE |

Where do you spend the most time?
Our kitchen, dining area, and family room are one big space and that’s where we spend most of our time. When we’re entertaining, we will open up the folding glass doors along the back of our house and the kids will run around outside. On GRACE LEE |

Talk to us about your kids’ rooms.
Our girls share a room, so I needed to maximize their space. With kids spaces, I just try to keep it open and have art supplies or other creative toys readily available so they have a lot of space and resources to be creative. How do you balance motherhood with your busy career? What helps you to keep all of the plates spinning?
MINI |
The one constant is lots of sunscreen. My current product mix includes SK-II, Yon-Ka, and O’Hui (a Korean brand). We know schedules can be hectic— so tell us about yours! What does a typical day look like right now?
MINI |
I get up at 6 and do a quick email scan. Then I make breakfast and pack lunches. I drop off my kids at school at 8 AM and then sit in traffic for my one hour commute into downtown LA. In the office, I typically have a few appointments during the day, be it a custom client or a wholesale account meeting. My commute back home is the same and I try to maximize that time by returning calls while driving— my car is my mobile office. In the evenings, I help my girls with homework and help them practice piano before bedtime. Once the girls are asleep around 8:30, I fold laundry, check email, and prepare for the next day. I try to be efficient with my time by making lists and scheduling my day in 15-minute increments. I also have a lot of support and help around me. My husband has been my #1 fan since I started my line and we have family literally down the street from us. GRACE LEE |

How has motherhood changed you?
Motherhood has definitely softened me and put things into prospective. Many things pale in comparison to hearing the sheer joy of a belly laugh from one of our girls. There are a few things that I would probably never do if I didn’t have children: camping (we camp 2-3 times a year), Disneyland (we have annual passes), use words like “potty” and “ni-ni” in normal conversation. What is your greatest joy of motherhood?

How hard the first few weeks are. Actually, they do tell you but you just can’t grasp the level of intensity— the mix of hormones, emotions, physical pain, lethargy, and complete exhilaration all at the same time. But motherhood really is GRACE LEE |

What do you love about raising your girls in LA?
LA has amazing weather, the best food, diverse cultures and I love that we are very close to the beach and driving distance to the desert and mountains. GRACE LEE |
If you get any “me time,” how do you wind down or spend it?

As I get older, I am trying to take better care of myself. I like to get facials and massages when I can. Even ten minutes in the steam room at the gym is a nice quiet luxury. GRACE LEE |

Thank you for inviting us into your store! How would you describe it?
friend Josephine Wister Faure. It’s art, it’s nature, it’s just perfection.
I think it feels a bit like my house, if my closet was inside out and the surfboards were on the wall and not in the garage. But more seriously, it’s definitely a reflection of all the things I love: California, nature, surfing, and beautiful dresses. It feels very native to California and it fits downtown because the clothes are sewn here, so it’s organic in nature.

What are some of your favorite elements in your store?

How much time do you spend in the store? Do your children visit often?
I’m in the store every day, and every day I tell myself I need to be there more. My son, Alfie, comes to the store with me every Wednesday, and every Wednesday I have wine with lunch. Just kidding. He’s rambunctious, though, so it gets crazy. There are a lot of big trucks downtown so he loves that, but it also means we need to close the doors because he bolts outside. It was a meandering path for me.
I ran into my kindergarten teacher this past weekend and when I told her who I was she said, “and you are a fashion designer now, isn’t that correct?” So you know, it’s a big deal when your kindergarten teacher knows what you do for a living; I am from a small town, not that small though. The deciding moment was my wedding. I’d made my own dress and a woman at the wedding told me I was “wasting my life and should be making dresses.” She was right. Three months after I got married, I was enrolled in fashion school to learn to make patterns and sew. Where do you find inspiration for each new collection? How about the most recent?

The color palette was inspired by a painting I wish I owned by Simone Shubuck. The silhouettes were shaped by a recent ski vacation I took with some family friends. The mom is very posh, but is seriously always wearing high tops and Comme des Garçons sweatshirts. I thought it was a cool look and tried to incorporate it into my aesthetic. HEIDI MERRICK |
What has been your proudest career moment to date?
MINI |
As a designer, what would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?
MINI |
I don’t think that I do keep all the plates spinning and it doesn’t matter. The biggest challenge is being okay with that. For example, knowing that while you’re breastfeeding and taking a baby to work with you, that it isn’t the year you’re going to single-handedly change the world of design. I have no problem letting go of work when the kids need me. I have a big problem letting go of the kids when work needs me. HEIDI MERRICK |
Has your style changed at all since becoming a mom?
MINI |
I’m more into a uniform now that I’m a mom. The whole body changing thing is rough as a designer. It messed up my size scale when I’m like, “This isn’t a 4! This is tiny, we need to make it bigger.” I don’t think my style has changed as much as my HEIDI MERRICK |

With motherhood, I’m suddenly super naturally able to accomplish twenty times the amount of anything I was able to before. What is your greatest joy of motherhood?

I don’t feel surprised. It feels more ancient, like I’ve always known them. Maybe that’s surprising. HEIDI MERRICK |
Tell us how you decided on your children’s names.
MINI |
Hiver is French for winter and the day she was born it was hailing in LA. We didn’t know what we were having and when my mom asked her name, I just said Hiver. Her HEIDI MERRICK |
name is Hiver Psalm, which means winter songs of praise. It just felt like poetry to me at the time, and it’s proved to suit her. Alfie is named after my dad, Alford. His name is Alford Paul, after both of our fathers. Johnny’s dad passed away later that year. I’m really happy we named him that. They are two beautiful men to be named after. What do you love most about raising your kids in LA?
MINI |
I like that there’s so many different types of people in LA. I love that we have a lot of options for education. We get to have big careers, and the kids get to see that and take part. HEIDI MERRICK |

I describe my home as meaningful, modern and eclectic. I like minimalism and clean lines, but I’ve also collected items around my home from all over the world that I like to see on a daily basis. I like to see things that mean something to me or my family and they are also great conversation pieces when people come over.

Let’s talk creating a kid-friendly environment without sacrificing style! How did you do it?
MINI |
Having one-year-old triplets makes that idea nearly impossible! But my theory is that if there is a place for everything then we can find cute storage bins or dedicate drawers in the kitchen just for bottles and baby things— and I literally have a giant drawer in my kitchen just for their bottles. My most favorite find was a padded play mat from Little Nomad that makes mats that look like rugs. People ask me all they time if it’s a rug!

What are some of your favorite elements in your home?

I love all the natural light! If there is sunlight outside, you can be sure all the lights are off in my home. It feels so good to have the sun shine down on you! I also love my hardwood floors. I’ve collected rugs while travel-

ing in Guatemala, Morocco and Turkey for years and it was always a dream of mine to have beautiful hardwood floors to pair with my rugs. Talk to us about the triplets’ room. What inspired you in creating their space?
MINI |
I didn’t want a traditional white-walled room with soft tones. I wanted the nursery to be gender neutral above all else and I wanted to have fun with it. The wallpaper and rug added more of an eclectic vibe and the modern crib, dresser and shelves gave the room the balance it needed to fit my style. I’m hoping their beautiful cribs will last long enough for them to use for their first baby!

On a career note, tell us about how Nena & Co. came to be.

Nena & Co. came from a strong love for my Guatemalan heritage, passion for travel, and niche for design. Guatemala is full of talented master weavers that often get haggled down for their back-breaking work. My goal was to design products that appealed to Americans and simultaneously created sustainable work at fair wages for men and women in Guatemala.

What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

We have 11 employees in the US and about 40 in our workshops in Guatemala, not to mention the weavers we work with. The biggest challenge is feeling like I am giving those that my company employs and my family my

What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?
A lot of help. If my babies are awake, you bet I’m going to be there with them, but having help allows me to focus on work when they are asleep. I’m working on building a great team at my office so that I can hand off a lot of my responsibilities. I went through a lot of employees before we found the great team that I have now, but my family comes first and my company second. I love both but there is no question as to where my priorities are. If I have to go into work when PEA (Penelope, Ethan and Alejandra) are awake then I will usually bring one of the babies with me.

How has motherhood changed you?
her, “What’s that other stuff then?” and she corrected herself and congratulated us on having triplets! Motherhood has made me very sensitive to others’ needs, more accepting and forgiving. Being a mom is hard, then add keeping up your self esteem, not comparing yourself to others, balancing work and family, avoiding feeling guilty and that just touches the surface of what moms feel. I mostly didn’t worry about all those things when I was single. Being a mom brings on an immense amount of responsibility that you just want to get right. More than anything, I just want to enjoy every second of every stage of my babies’ lives because I never knew how sweet life could be doing just that.

What was your initial thought when you learned you were expecting triplets?
MINI |
I was not mentally prepared for the news, that’s for sure! It is truly the only time in my life that I have been shocked. The nurse doing the ultrasound actually told me I was having twins until I asked

What do you think is the greatest challenge of being a mom to multiples?
MINI |
For me, it has been more physically challenging than anything. I suffered from a severely herniated disc through my pregnancy up until a month ago that was constantly pinching my sciatic nerve. On my best days, I was in constant pain and on my worst days, I couldn’t walk or stand up straight. Try taking care of three babies in that condition. I opted to have back surgery in February and it has changed my life!

How did you choose your children’s names?
They all have a namesake. “Alejandra” Rose is named after me. Penelope “Ninette” is named after my mom. Ethan “Jeremy” is named after his dad, Jeremy.

The same as I describe my home decor— modern with an eclectic vibe. I like classic styles with a bit of bohemian flare.

MINI |
The babies wake up between 7:00 and 7:30 AM. Jeremy and I make bottles and feed the babies in bed with us. We try and snuggle them for as long as they will let us, but that usually only last about ten minutes total before they try and crawl off the bed. We take them to the family room and Jeremy heads off to work by 8 which is exactly when my nanny arrives. I’m sure people aren’t used to the idea of having a nanny and being at home together all day with babies, but she really helps me with all my other household responsibilities during the day. I still have a business to run, so while the babies sleep, I can work. They take two long naps a day— one from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM and another from 2 PM to 4 PM. They go to bed at 6 PM and sleep all night! During their naps, I’m usually on email, running errands or taking meetings at my office.

Yes! I used to hate wearing dresses and now they’re all I ever want to wear. I leave the tight jeans for date night with Jeremy. With all the running around I do with triplets, I need to keep cool and feel comfortable to get on the ground and play all day.

Where do you like to shop?
I’m completely obsessed with Christy Dawn dresses. Her dresses are meant for simplified beauty and comfort; I live in them. For the kids, I

Tell us how you got involved with Mrs. John L. Strong.

I fell in love with Mrs. John L. Strong when I was 15 and was visiting New York on a family vacation. 10 years later, I was living in New York, had just quit my job working at a law firm and was leaving for business school in a few months. I called up the company out of the blue and asked if they wanted some help for the summer. Turns out they did, and I [got] a summer internship! About 5 years after that, I read about Mrs. John L. Strong going into bankruptcy and called some of the people I had worked with that summer to find out the story. A few weeks later, we purchased the assets of the company out of bankruptcy. What has been your most difficult career moment to date?
What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

The period that started the day after we purchased the company. There was a lot of work to do to get organized and to introduce ourselves to our clients and our suppliers. Since we bought the business out of bankruptcy, there was a lot of confusion. Sorting through everything and reconnecting with our clients and reestablishing the business as the finest stationery brand on the market took a lot of time and patience. It was a much larger undertaking than I had anticipated.
Feeling like I’ve found a balance between not spending so much time away that I’m missing out on major milestones and achievements in Catherine’s life and not spending so much time at home that I’m missing out on my own personal achievements. I really enjoy working and I really enjoy being a mom. I’m still trying to figure out the best balance for me, but I’m in a really lucky position to have flexibility with my schedule and the resources to get help when I need it. None of what I do would be possible without the support of my husband or our wonderful nanny. It truly takes a village.

Where have you seen the biggest changes in

I am not a planner, so all of the planning that goes in to everything now was a big surprise for me. From coordinating the schedule for getting ready in the morning to deciding whether you’re going to eat dinner before or after your child goes to sleep, nothing is spur of the moment anymore.
