Summer is here! I’ve officially been a new parent for five months now and although I’m exhausted, putting together each issue of Mini has a brand-new meaning! For years, I’ve been stockpiling helpful advice and inspiration from the amazing parents we’ve featured and this issue is no exception! Our summer issue is filled to the brim with beautiful homes and kids spaces, interviews with moms like Haylie Duff, Domino Kirke, Beatrice Valenzuela, Pauline Montupet, and the founders of the inspiring organization, Baby2Baby. And while you’re browsing these pages, don’t forget to take notes on the latest baby gear like a new carrier that’s also part wrap, the crib that has been a lifesaver for my little one (sleep, I remember you now!), and a stroller with a bold print and color that will make you the envy of your neighborhood strolls. So grab your poolside iPad or scroll through on your phone while you’re at the beach, let’s get summer-ing!

MINI |

We’re thrilled to have you on our spring cover! Let’s dive right into your life as a mom. What does your morning routine look like?

Motherhood changed my priorities. It taught me love on a whole different level. It made me realize that this life isn’t just about me and what I want.

Now that Ryan is two, our morning routine has slightly shifted. She used to love to entertain herself and play in her bed for a bit before we got her up. Now, she is BUSY and those wake-ups are getting earlier and earlier! So now we are up around 6 AM. She gets a yogurt and mama gets a big cup of coffee.

MINI |

HAYLIE DUFF |

What do you think is the greatest challenge of motherhood?

MINI |

For me, the biggest challenge has been the pressure to “do it right.” There isn’t a clear-cut way to be a parent. We will all make mistakes.

HAYLIE |

What do you hope to instill into your daughter? What is most important to you in raising her?

The most important thing for me is Ryan’s happiness. I would love nothing more than to raise a young woman who feels happy and content with her life. I hope that she will have a good work ethic, be a supportive partner to someone one day and really really love to spend time with her mom. HAYLIE |

HAYLIE |

What is your greatest parenting fear or worry?

MINI |

Social media worries me most. I didn’t grow up in a world where young kids had phones. Social media seems to make it easier to find trouble. HAYLIE |

On the flip side, what is your favorite part?

MINI |

EVERYTHING! I loved the newborn sleepy stage, but I also really love the wild two’s! My daughter is so funny and adventurous these days. HAYLIE |

Tell us how you decided on your daughter’s name.

MINI |

I dreamt her name! I had a dream I was pregnant with a very sassy little girl with a high ponytail! I was calling her Ryan in my dream. It was actually the only name that Matt and I considered. HAYLIE |

What surprised you most about motherhood?

MINI |

I never knew I was capable of juggling so many things! I think that surprised me the most. HAYLIE |

MINI |

How has motherhood changed you?

Now that it’s summer, what does your skincare situation look like?

MINI |

My routine is simple! In my daily life, I hardly ever put makeup on. I try to give my skin the chance to breathe whenever possible. It’s easier that way and I think it keeps you looking young too. Sunscreen always though! HAYLIE |

How about your daily “uniform” or typical ensemble?

MINI |

Most often I am in a pair of boyfriend jeans and a white tee. Maybe with a pair of leather slides. HAYLIE |

How has your style changed since becoming a mom?

MINI |

I own more sneakers than I did before. I had pretty laid back style before I was a mom though, so my style hasn’t changed all that much. HAYLIE |

Let’s talk about your home! Tell us about the place! How would you describe your home— the design, the feel?

MINI |

My home is a Cape Cod style but parts of it feel very fancy! Sometimes when Matt and I sit in our formal living room, we laugh. We feel very adult in this home, [but] it still has a very cozy and warm feel. That is important to me. HAYLIE |

Where do you spend the most time in your home?

MINI |

HAYLIE |

I spend the most time in my

kitchen and living room. It is a big open space and the hub of the house. Tell us about your daughter’s room. What inspired you in creating her space? What are some of your favorite elements in her room?

MINI |

The rug in Ryan’s bedroom was actually the first thing I bought when we found out we were having a girl! It is colorful, but not babyish. I also bought a print from a photographer I like and had it framed. It’s a pink sunset in Joshua Tree and hangs above her changing table. HAYLIE |

How do you manage to keep all of the plates spinning?

MINI |

I don’t always! Sometimes it all comes crashing down but there is such beauty in the chaos.

decided to teach myself when I got my first place. I needed to be able to whip up something other than pasta!

HAYLIE |

How has your career shifted since having kids? HAYLIE | I say no to more things now. I have to consider if things fit in to what is going on in Ryan’s world. For example, I just finished a handful of TV movies, but now I am passing on things so I can transition her in to preschool. It’s a constant ebb and flow.

What meals do you cook most often for your family? Do you have any that are on constant rotation?

MINI |

MINI |

We love all kinds of soups, chili, roasted chicken and vegetables, salmon... but we are also big fans of breakfast for dinner! HAYLIE |

Does Ryan have any favorite foods or not-so-favorite foods yet?

MINI |

Well, Ryan won’t touch chicken. We have a dog named Chicken and I think she is confused by that. She loves peas, pasta and steamed salmon. HAYLIE |

Six years ago, Norah Weinstein and Kelly Sawyer Patricof took over Baby2Baby—an organization that provides low-income children with basic necessities like cribs and diapers—and have since turned it into one of the fastest growing non-profits in California. Under this powerhouse mom duo, Baby2Baby has grown from a grass roots community program to a national leader, distributed over 13 million diapers and expanded into 19 additional cities throughout the country. photography by M O R G A N PA N S I N G

Tell us about your work with Baby2Baby. How did the organization come to be?

MINI |

Baby2Baby provides low-income children ages 0-12 with diapers, clothing and all the basic essentials that every child deserves. By distributing to non-profit partner organizations including homeless and domestic violence shelters, Head Start programs, and children’s hospitals, we will serve more than 150,000 children this year. KELLY SAWYER PATRICOF |

How does Baby2Baby operate on a daily basis?

MINI |

We receive large corporate donations as well as new and gently used items from the community throughout the day. Corporate donations are inventoried and our staff and volunteers go through every community item to make sure they are free of holes and stains and meet the Baby2Baby Golden Standard, which means they are something we would feel comfortable putting on our own children. Then, the items are packaged at our warehouses and 2,000 social workers have access to pick them up and get them into the hands of the 150,000

NORAH WEINSTEIN |

low-income children we serve. How has the organization changed since its early days?

MINI |

Six years ago, it was just the two of us with one intern working out of a tiny storefront and helping 500 kids. Today, we have a full staff and multiple warehouses with tens of thousands of square footage. We have distributed more than 27 million items including over 13 million diapers and are serving 150,000 low-income children in Los Angeles this year. We also launched the Baby2Baby National Network where we serve as the umbrella organization to 19 groups in 21 cities throughout the country.

NORAH WEINSTEIN |

What has been your proudest moment to date with Baby2Baby?

MINI |

We have lots of proud moments! We feel proud when a mom or dad in our program tells us Baby2Baby gives them hope. We felt proud when we raised our first 1 million dollars. We are proud of our staff, many of whom started as interns and now are running departments, and we are proud of our Baby2Baby National Network summits when

NORAH WEINSTEIN |

we see our member organizations growing and serving more and more children. We’re proud of our part in increasing awareness about the diaper gap. But as proud as we are of Baby2Baby, we remind ourselves every day how much more work we have ahead. There are increasing numbers of children living in poverty who lack basic essentials.

One day I feel like I’m not spending enough time with my kids, the next I feel like I’ve dropped the ball on something at the office. I’ve come to a place where I’ve relaxed a little and realized that I can only do so much and I just try and do what I can. KELLY SAWYER PATRICOF |

We don’t like to compliment our husbands, but here I think we have to. We both have husbands who know and value the fact that our careers are equally important and we put them to work!

NORAH WEINSTEIN |

Tell us how far you two go back. How long have you known each other?

MINI |

My father-in-law set us up on a double date 10 years ago! KELLY SAWYER PATRICOF |

MINI |

What makes you a great team?

Norah is the yin to my yang. I call her lawyer face because she is very meticulous and detail-oriented. I am gregarious and uninhibited. KELLY SAWYER PATRICOF |

We are opposites in many ways. I am an over-thinker and Kelly is the most decisive person ever. It works.

NORAH WEINSTEIN |

What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

MINI |

I think guilt is the biggest challenge but knowing that we are helping low-income children in our city is the best cure for that. Instead, we have made our own children a part of our work and teaching them about giving back at a young age truly makes it all worth it.

NORAH WEINSTEIN |

What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?

MINI |

Since you’re both moms, how do you support each other on the motherhood front?

MINI |

We don’t ask questions when the other has to do something for or with her kids.

First-time mom Jessie De Lowe basked in the glow long before she learned she was pregnant. As the co-founder of lifestyle site How You Glow, this yoga instructor and art therapist drew from her background to forge a sense of strength and calm that can be tough to muster during such a time of uncertainty and excitement. We caught up with De Lowe just before the birth of her daughter to talk how she prepared for motherhood— mind, body, and spirit.

Let’s dive right into your work at How You Glow. Tell us about the site and what inspired you to create it.

MINI |

How You Glow is a lifestyle site that showcases anything and everything that makes you glow, which we define as “a positive vibrational energy that radiates from the inside out.” It is an online destination to learn, discover and to be inspired in all aspects of life. The site was created by my business partner Tara and I out of our own personal desire to explore and discover the best of the best of everything from food, fitness, travel, fashion to healing and wellness and more. The platform of How You Glow allows us to share what we learn along the way, with the goal of enhancing others’ lives and sense of wellbeing and helping spread the word about our favorite brands and people. JESSIE DE LOWE |

You’re also a yoga instructor and art therapist. Tell us about your work with that and how you got started.

MINI |

Immediately after graduating from University of Colorado at Boulder, I went to live at a yoga school called Kripalu in the Berkshires for the summer to become certified as a yoga teacher. In the fall, I began my masters program in Art Therapy at NYU, where from day one, you are placed in an internship to get handson experience in the field. I was hired by my cousin to work at an alternative adolescent treatment center in NYC JESSIE DE LOWE |

and was fortunate to be able to teach yoga alongside running art therapy groups. It soon became very apparent to me how well the two modalities complemented each other in a session. The yoga and meditation relaxes the mind and body, softening inhibitions to make way for more creativity and flow within art making. I currently work in Los Angeles as a private yoga teacher and an art therapist in treatment centers. I also lead both public and private sessions that combine yoga, meditation, aromatherapy, art making and journaling for the ultimate mind/body/soul exploration and release. These are my favorite.

How has your work as a yogi helped you during your pregnancy? What yoga poses or meditation exercises would you say are essential for moms-to-be?

MINI |

My background in yoga really prepared both my body and mind for pregnancy. I have felt strong and calm for most of my pregnancy, despite not being able to actually work out or practice much yoga during the third trimester. The body has a memory, so I feel lucky that I set a strong foundation for myself by being a regular yoga practitioner for so many years. During pregnancy, I am a big fan of gentle and restorative yoga— deep breathing, stretching and moving energy through the body to create space for your growing baby. I was also practicing a lot of inversions in effort to flip our breeched baby, which many people have had luck with, but it looks like she doesn’t want to move. I would recommend downward dog and cat/cow pose

every day, because they simply feel amazing. What would you say has been the most stressful or most difficult part of your pregnancy?

MINI |

JESSIE DE LOWE |

The first trimester was really tough. I was exhausted and so sick, throwing up every single day. Plus, my husband and I had literally just gotten married so it was a bit of a bummer to feel like such a drag in our first few months of newlywed life. Luckily, like clockwork, the first day of my second trimester I woke up feeling like myself and all was well again. JESSIE DE LOWE |

MINI |

How about the most exciting?

My absolute favorite thing about pregnancy is feeling the baby move in my belly. It is the most miraculous, mindblowing phenomenon to feel this little preJESSIE DE LOWE |

cious life inside of you. My husband and I sometimes put the music on and just stare at my belly, watching her dance. I honestly feel like she’s got some good rhythm! Thank you for inviting us into your home— Tell us about the place!

MINI |

Home is definitely my sanctuary and my ultimate happy place. It is cozy, lived-in, full of good energy and love. We use every single inch of our little beach house and have adorned the walls and shelves with special memories from our travels. No matter where we go, we are always the most excited to come home to our magical little street. JESSIE DE LOWE |

MINI |

Do you have a favorite room?

Our enclosed front porch is where we spend the majority of our time in the house because we get to stare at the ocean. I often work from here and always feel at peace watching the sailboats drift by. JESSIE DE LOWE |

I wanted the nursery to feel happy, light, bright and peaceful [and] I love everything about it! I love the natural light (it gets more sunlight than any room in the house) and the green leafy trees in the window. Most of the furniture is made out of natural materials, which gives it a clean look. JESSIE DE LOWE |

What is your personal approach to wellness? Do you have a daily routine?

MINI |

I have a balanced and non-dogmatic approach to wellness that is rooted in listening to my body and paying attention to what feels good and what doesn’t. The answers are all within us, it’s just a matter of slowing down and paying attention. A daily and nightly routine is really important to me. It can be as simple as technology-free silence and intention setting when I wake up, or turning my shower [and] face washing routine into a meditative practice, but it really sets the tone for a day filled with presence and awareness. Ending the night with a similar ritual provides time to reflect and helps me feel grounded before falling asleep. I love putting a JESSIE DE LOWE |

I’m also a big believer in the healing power of massage and it is an important part of my wellness routine. How did this change during your pregnancy?

I have been a lot less active than normal in the last third of my pregnancy. Typically vinyasa yoga classes, long walks on the beach and hiking are part of my wellness routine, but I’ve had to find comfort in stillness and being mellow. JESSIE DE LOWE |

Let’s talk motherhood! What is most important to you in raising your baby?

How do you anticipate your career will shift to accommodate motherhood?

Luckily, I think motherhood will expand my career rather than limit it. There are so many incredible working moms in the wellness space and I can’t wait to collaborate within the mom community and contribute whatever I can. JESSIE DE LOWE |

boyfriend Max. He really nailed the feeling I wanted to have. We have display items in little “stories” instead of by brand, so there are lots of shelves and areas to create little vignettes. How much time do you spend in the store? Do you ever bring Ollie to work with you?

MINI |

I am here about 3 to 4 days a week. I will do 2 to 3 days working on the floor and then 1 to 2 days in the office. Retail has tricky hours, so I sometimes work late and on weekends. When Ollie was a newborn, we lived 4 blocks away from the shop so I would bring him in with me more often. He would nap in his stroller in the fitting room— it was great! Now that he is a toddler, it’s a bit harder, like bringing a bull into a china shop.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

Thank you for inviting us into your store! Tell us about the place! How would you describe it?

MINI |

I wanted Le Point to feel like a breath of fresh air in the San Francisco retail landscape. The idea was to have it feel minimal and clean, but also cool. I wanted a space that could let the clothing shine— but also be a piece of art and design in itself.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

What are some of your favorite elements in your store?

MINI |

PAULINE MONTUPET |

How is your personal style reflected in the design of the store?

MINI |

Le Point is all about mixing trendier, more fashion forward pieces with casual, easy-to-wear items. I think that is very much my style. I firmly believe that fashion should be fun and not too serious. It’s all about expressing yourself and bringing pretty things into your life.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

Tell us what inspired you to open Le Point. How did it all begin?

MINI |

It’s something I always wanted to do and it seemed like the right time to start something in San Francisco. Fashionwise, I feel like San Francisco is really coming into its own. The part I love most about styling was creating a story and with the shop, I’m able to create a story every season.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

What has been your proudest career moment to date?

MINI |

We just won best designer boutique in San Francisco Magazine, so that’s cool. I also love when a designer we carry comes to visit the shop and they love the space. It makes me happy and proud to have a space that designers and brands want to be a part of.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

Has your style changed at all since becoming a mom?

MINI |

Comfort has always been important, but even more so now since I’m a mom. I also have even more of a uniform than before— like my crew neck tee shirt obsession. Lately, I’ll find a few outfits I love and wear those over and over for a few weeks until I’m sick of them and then move on. It’s unfortunate that big earrings came into style right when I had a baby, but sometimes it’s exciting to have something I can only wear at work or when I’m without my son— like silk skirts and big hoop earrings.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

MINI |

What is your greatest joy of motherhood?

It’s seeing my son develop into his own little person. Every little movement and leap he makes, from rolling over to walking and now talking is just so amazing to see happen.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

MINI |

What was the biggest surprise of motherhood?

MINI |

For me, it’s how much you surprise yourself. I was scared of breastfeeding but I ended up loving it and nursed my son until [he was] 15 months. I thought cleaning poop diapers and baby vomit would bother me, [but it] turns out, I don’t even care. I even found myself discussing those things in detail with other mom friends! I thought I would want to return to work right away and in the end, I was really happy slowing down for a bit to be with baby.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

What do you think is one thing no one really warns you about?

MINI |

How hard it all is. As a working mom and someone who has always been career-focused, I wasn’t sure how to balance my wanting to be with my son, but also wanting to work. I constantly feel guilty for not working enough and then also for not being with [Oliver] enough.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

I think there is this myth of “having it all.” You can’t be 100% on everything, something has to give. Some days I have to close the shop early or not take a styling job to be with my son. When I am with Ollie, I try and stay off my computer and phone until nap time— but again, it’s not always possible. I have learned to be a little more flexible with myself. Sometimes an email won’t get returned right away, the house will be a mess, and we are eating frozen pizza... and that’s OK. You just do the best you can with the time you have.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

MINI |

How has motherhood changed you?

I went from living a rather self-centered life, working, going to the gym all the time, trying the newest restaurant, traveling the world. When I was pregnant, I thought my life would be just the same as it was before, just with a baby. But everything changes. Your priorities just change after baby. I went through a few months where I felt quite lost. You are not the person you were before, but I also wasn’t ready to be just a mom.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

What do you love most about raising Ollie in San Francisco? MINI |

I have found some really great groups of creative moms in this city that have made this whole motherhood journey easier. San Francisco has so many facets and such a diverse community, it makes it easy to find your little niche. I hope that Ollie can be exposed to lots of different people and opportunities this city has to offer and then in turn, he can find his place and his little niche.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

MINI |

Tell us how you decided on your son’s name.

We had tossed around a few names while I was pregnant and Oliver (Ollie) just stuck. His middle name is Maxwell which is his dad’s first name. Oliver Maxwell Gray just had a good ring to it. Plus, his initials are OMG.

PAULINE MONTUPET |

working. I usually leave for work later than my partner Max, so I am on Ollie breakfast duty. We have a broccoli and cheese omelet most days. That way, even if he is being a picky toddler later, I know he got some good nutrients. On the days we have child care, I will head to the shop to work for two hours before we open and work most of the day. Then it’s home for dinner and play time with Ollie. After his bedtime, I’ll relax and watch some TV, have a glass of wine and catch up on work. On days I am with Ollie, we run errands, go to the playground and swim class, [or] we will stop by the shop and check in. What is your idea of the perfect summer ensemble?

MINI |

Let’s talk about your daily routine. What time do you get up?

MINI |

Ollie is my alarm clock and he gets up between 6:45 and 7:15. Sometimes I will get up before him and do a bit of work. I find I can be more productive for one hour early in the morning when the house is quite versus trying to stay up late

PAULINE MONTUPET |

Thank you for inviting us into your home! Tell us about the place!

MINI |

Our house is like a tree house. The children’s tree house actually connects to it. It’s very personal with little details everywhere. My partner Ramsey Conder and I made and designed a lot of the things in it. He made all of the lighting and hardware, the kitchen, our beds. It feels like you’re on vacation somewhere very lush.

BEATRICE VALENZUELA |

Do you have a favorite room in your home?

MINI |

I love the kitchen. Ramsey and I designed it and it truly is a gem. It’s filled with delicious food in jars on shelves or hanging from hooks in baskets. The counter tops are Moroccan tile. The bottom half of the walls are a beautiful blue. There’s a yellow Dutch door that opens to the deck [and] is open all day long. The windows face west so we get a sunset view.

BEATRICE VALENZUELA |

Talk to us about your kids’ rooms. What inspired you in creating their spaces?

MINI |

We are always thinking about their needs depending on how they are growing. We just got Astrid a gorgeous woven dresser with brass details and birds carved in. She asked for drawers and now she has them! Ramsey just made Dimitri a

trundle bed because he was ready for his own. Dimitri and Astrid helped paint it in a vibrant turmeric. What are your favorite elements in their rooms?

MINI |

I absolutely love their wall hanging. We’ve had it for over 14 years. Ramsey found it at a junk store in perfect condition. It is embroidered all over with African animals in brilliant colors. I also love how many baskets there are filled with stuffed animals and dress-up clothes.

BEATRICE VALENZUELA |

On a career note, tell us how you decided to start your line.

MINI |

BEATRICE VALENZUELA |

I was a stylist and it came very natural. I just had my daughter and needed to figure out something I could do without having to actively be out of the home. I knew some store owners at that time and that was very helpful.

I love that look. At times, I wear a lower hem. I never wear anything dumpy, NEVER! I’m already looking tired and there’s no need to look more disheveled than I feel. I just don’t keep anything unflattering in my closet. That really helps.

How is your personal style reflected in the brand?

MINI |

MINI |

Where are your favorite places to shop?

For myself, the Echo Park Craft Fair. I founded it eight years ago and my partner Rachel Craven, an exquisite designer, and I now curate and invite our most favorite makers. It’s my personal paradise of everything I love, want, and desire. I shop for my whole family there, even for my home.

BEATRICE VALENZUELA |

I am a very feminine woman who loves bold prints, color, and comfort. When I design, I keep in mind natural fabrics and silhouettes that will be flattering and easy-to-wear for many body types.

BEATRICE VALENZUELA |

Has your style changed since becoming a mom?

MINI |

Yes, a little bit. I tend to wear things very fitted around my waist now.

BEATRICE VALENZUELA |

We know schedules can be hectic— so tell us about yours! What does a typical day look like right now?

MINI |

Where have you seen the biggest changes in your life since becoming a mom?

MINI |

My love and I trade off days. Sometimes he takes the children to school or I will. I make a potion of chai tea and always add my Moon Juice dusts. Power, brain, spirit and beauty— Sometimes all of the above, sometimes just one or two. I add almond butter, honey, hot water, and rose water and I drink deeply on the deck outside. Then emails, I send out orders, my assistants arrive, we work some more, and [then] always break for lunch on the deck. I try and keep them sitting, eating for as long as possible, [before] they remind me that we should get back to work. Eventually I pick up the children or they arrive. I make snacks and cocktails for Ramsey and I. Sometimes Margaret and Pavi (my assistants) will join us. I make dinner and we usually eat outside. We take baths or a shower outside if it’s a warm night. Then it’s off to books or storytelling and we go to bed. Sometimes I’ll stay up and listen to my books on Audible.

BEATRICE VALENZUELA |

My focus is much better. My drive has meaning now. On a more superficial level, I have trouble finding time to exercise. I try and always make time to see friends and have fun. Balancing it all is very challenging.

I mess up everyday. So I’m not in denial about being a parent. I do the best I can and it usually is not that great. One of my worries is that my children will have to experience racism and prejudice due to the fact that they are half Mexican. America is still so racist and it’s so painful when one experiences such hate and ignorance.

My newest dresses. They are called Guajiro, Caribeño and the Malecón all in my newest print— the night blooming cereus.

MINI |

Tell us about your summer skincare routine.

I love beauty products. I use Tata Harper, Earth tu Face and Shiva Rose. I cleanse, tone, and use a contouring serum as a moisturizer. Always do eye cream. About three times a week, I like to do a mask to rejuvenate my skin. Lately, I use Nūface once or twice a week. It’s a little microcurrent device that rejuvenates my face by toning, lifting and reducing facial lines.

BEATRICE VALENZUELA |

If you get any “me time,” how do you wind down or spend it?

MINI |

I love going to the spa. I love getting a facial, scrub, and massage.

such a huge gap in my care. Having a doula there would’ve made a huge difference. For our moms-to-be, can you define doula and your role?

MINI |

A doula is someone who goes on the pregnancy, birth and postpartum journey with a family. A doula is an advocate. They never speak on behalf of a parent. They give informational, physical and spiritual support. Doulas help prepare the parent for childbirth, newborn care and the postpartum phase. They help with education, preparing the home, packing for the hospital or birth center. For postpartum, they help with cooking, cleaning, running errands, newborn care and breastfeeding support.

DOMINO KIRKE |

What do you think are the perks of working with a doula?

MINI |

Let’s dive right into your work as a doula and birth educator. What sparked your interest in working with moms-to-be or where did it all begin?

MINI |

As a child, I was always very protective of babies and pregnant bellies. I told myself that I would become a midwife if things didn’t work out with music, but I always knew I would have to experience childbirth first before I knew if birth work was for me. I didn’t have a doula at my son’s birth. I had a midwife’s assistant and she was really there to assist the midwife, not me. I really felt the difference. I knew that once the dust had settled after my son’s birth, I would become a doula, because I felt

DOMINO KIRKE |

Having a doula is a way for you to keep the ball in your court during the birthing process. The doula hopefully will know you quite well by the time you deliver, and it can be so invaluable to have someone who is that familiar. The doula is there JUST for you.

DOMINO KIRKE |

You’re also the co-director of Carriage House Birth. Tell us about how you got involved.

MINI |

I became a birth doula, and met my partner, Samantha Hug-

gins, just over a year later. I needed a partner because the on-call lifestyle with a baby (my son was seven months) was just too much. I needed a sister. We started Carriage House Doulas. We quickly realized that we, as doulas and birth workers, needed our own community, and so we decided to open a center in Williamsburg, Brooklyn a few years later. We partnered with co-director, Lindsey Bliss, to open Carriage House Birth. We needed to build a village. There was just such a need! Now we are in LA and NY (soon to be in Austin) and we have over 80 doulas in our collective. You’re also a musician! Tell us about your latest work.

How are you introducing your children to music?

MINI |

We play our piano as much as possible. I let my son come to sound checks with me, I ask him songs he likes when we’re driving, and I play him my music in the car.

DOMINO KIRKE |

MINI |

What is your earliest memory of music?

Watching my father play drums at a Bad Company show, piano lessons since I was six, and singing in choirs for as long as I can remember.

DOMINO KIRKE |

MINI |

I just finished my first LP “Beyond Waves.” It was produced by Joan Wasser (Joan As Police Woman) and co-written by Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic). I’m really proud of it!

I didn’t find out his gender when I was pregnant, so I swore he was a girl. I had a name picked out and everything. Of course, he was a 10 pound boy, so he got the name I was going to give a dog I planned on getting. It fit him like a glove.

DOMINO KIRKE |

What do you think is the greatest struggle or challenge of motherhood?

MINI |

How about the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

I don’t see him nearly enough. I was a single mum for four years, so joint custody is a whole other thing. I want to spend every moment I can with him, but it’s just not realistic. Has your style changed since becoming a mom?

MINI |

Thank you for inviting us into your home! How would you describe the place?

MINI |

What are some of your favorite elements in your home?

It is a colonial style house that was built in the 1940s. We have poured a lot of love into remodeling it and it now has much more of an open floor plan. The design is classic (mainly a black and white color scheme) with an eclectic mix of family heirlooms for decor.

ALICIA LUND |

We have collected an assortment of family heirlooms that give each room such a sweet element. Every piece has a story. I think my favorites are probably an ornate chair from China (from Tanner’s side of the family since it’s just super unique). family heirlooms—with a few found items, like a sweet baby vintage chair from a summer road trip and colorful vintage rugs from Morocco. I kept the room neutral and a blank canvas for the future. I’m more looking forward to how the room will change over the years as he grows and our family grows. What are your favorite elements in his room?

MINI |

I love his crib. Whether I was having a boy or girl, I knew I wanted that Oeuf crib. I love the dark wood for a boy and it fit in perfectly with the other wood elements we had going on in his room and the house. The rocking chair is over 100 years old. I love to entertain and whenever we have guests over everyone tends to congregate in the kitchen around the island and bar area. Also, since it’s summer, we’re spending a lot of our time out back. Grilling and lounging on the lawn picnicking. Talk to us about your son’s room. What inspired you in creating his space?

MINI |

I decorated Rex’s room as if it was any other room of the house rather than a typical nursery. It just felt more me to blend in pieces we had—

ALICIA LUND |

How did you decide on your son’s name?

MINI |

Rex Moss Lund. Rex is named after both of his grandpas—my grandpa who was Norman Rex and my husband’s grandfather, Frank Moss. We knew we wanted a family name and as soon as I found out we were having a boy, I knew we would name him Rex.

ALICIA LUND |

Can you give us an idea of what a typical work day looks like?

I don’t have a typical day, but the variety is what I love most. When I’m home it’s a lot of time spent at the computer— emails, putting a post together, coordinating shoots and the production details. I meet with my photographer and

ALICIA LUND |

What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

MINI |

Two things. Breastfeeding. Woah, I don’t think anyone really warned me how much time (how often in a day) [it would take]. And balancing Rex time and productive work time. I’m definitely not getting enough computer time these days. I feel like I’m constantly behind on deadlines and am swimming up sea, but at the same time, I wouldn’t give up that time with Rex.

No one really warned me about how involved breastfeeding is. Maybe also since Rex never took a bottle, but it’s been awesome now that he’s eating more solids and I don’t feel like i have to constantly whip my boob out in public, ha!

Anything that used to really stress me out I realize now isn’t worth getting worked up over. MINI |

for such a long time that we know each other well, there’s a trust and confidence in each other’s opinion and abilities. Tell us about your idea to start Maisonette. How did you decide to go into business together?

MINI |

Luisana and I were completely frustrated by the lack of high-quality, affordable, yet beautiful clothing and home goods for our children. As working moms, we had gotten very used to being able to order whatever we want for ourselves with the click of a button. This same ease did not exist when shopping for our kids. We found we’d be up late at night with 20 different browser windows open and get so fed up with the experience, we would abandon ship altogether. SYLVANA |

We are thrilled to spend the afternoon with two powerhouse moms! Tell us about your relationship. Where did you meet?

MINI |

We met while working at Vogue. We were both Anna Wintour’s assistants right out of college. SYLVANA |

Our time at Vogue was invaluable. It was the perfect training ground to learn how to work hard and be creative. Not to mention, the access and exposure to some of the world’s most beautiful things and experiences, which ultimately inspired us to start Maisonette.com.

LUISANA |

MINI |

What makes you two a great team?

We complement each other very well. What I may lack in one area, Luisana makes up for in spades, and vice versa. We also are incredibly honest with each other. If we don’t like something or want to try something different, we communicate that. It’s critical to have this level of openness in friendship and most importantly in business. SYLVANA |

LUISANA |

We also have been working together

The children’s market, up until now, has been incredibly fragmented. You either have incredibly beautiful and expensive occasionwear, or you have mass, cheaplyproduced goods with little to no style point of view. We created Maisonette.com to solve this problem, and to offer highquality, beautiful

LUISANA |

childrenswear and home goods at a variety of price points, all with the ease that comes with online shopping. How do you two work together since you live in different places?

MINI |

Every day is a little different, but we communicate regularly via video conferences, phone, text, chat, email, you name it. We have also been incredibly fortunate in building one of the most amazing teams in the world today. We rely on our team so heavily and they are what help keep Maisonette.com going. SYLVANA |

I often travel to NYC, in fact, I am here now for a few months. With e-commerce, so much can be done virtually through internet and phone, that meeting in person is not as necessary as one may think. But it is helpful and productive to come to NYC and see everyone.

LUISANA |

Introduce our readers to the site. What can we find on Maisonette?

MINI |

Everything your heart desires for your little ones, and more! We sell unique brands from independent retailers all over the world. You can get a cute little romper from Petite Lucette in Paris, crib blankets from Garbo & Friends in Brooklyn, a custom dress from the Lacemakers in Bilbao, Spain, shoes from ZUZII in California and a rose gold crib from Incy in Australia. We wanted to aggregate as much SYLVANA |

product as possible, while maintaining a curated and edited point of view, to make Maisonette.com a one-stop shop for parents and others searching for kids’ clothing and accessories. One of the bigger, earlier surprises so far is how well the home decor and furniture is doing. We even have some childless friends who have purchased the Indego Africa baskets for their own home! I guess you don’t even need kids to enjoy the site!

LUISANA |

MINI |

How do you balance career and motherhood?

SYLVANA |

It’s an incredibly hard balance to strike,

but when we started this company, beyond solving the problem of shopping for your children, we also sought to build a company culture that embraces family life. I myself make sure that when I’m with my kids, I’m really with them and unplugged from work. I also try to build their lives into my schedule, so I take them to school every morning which means work meetings start after dropoff. It’s little things like that, that make it possible to do it all! Undoubtedly it’s hard. You go through phases where work is requiring more of your time, but then there are times when things slow down and you can dedicate more time to your family. I try to take advantage of those moments as much as I can, and know that there is no right answer except doing your best.

LUISANA |

What surprised you most about motherhood?

MINI |

How incredibly gratifying it is and how much love we as humans are able to feel for our children. Also, how hard it is! SYLVANA |

I think before you become a parent, people try to explain to you what it is like, but there is really no way to understand how overwhelming it is and the depth of feeling and love you experience with your child or children. It was surprising in the best way possible.

LUISANA |

What do you think is the greatest challenge of motherhood?

MINI |

How to keep a healthy balance in your life between your family’s needs and your needs. I don’t think anyone has the

LUISANA |

answer. It’s a struggle for every mom whether they are working outside of the home or not. How about the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

MINI |

Time management. Prioritizing your time. Time, time, time. There never seems to be enough!

LUISANA |

Let’s talk style. What is your daily “uniform” or typical ensemble?

MINI |

In the summer, skirts and flats, high waisted pants, stripes. Anything comfortable that can be quickly pulled together with a heel and a necklace for either meetings or dinner out.

LUISANA |

As silly as it sounds, I like to make it slightly edgy. My uniform, and anyone in my office can attest, is a ripped jean, striped shirt and cool shoe to spice it up! It’s great because you can dress it up or down. SYLVANA |

Has your style changed at all since becoming a mom?

MINI |

Yes, I think how I dress now needs to be more versatile. I should be comfortable in the park with the kids, but hopefully in something that I can dress up if we are heading to dinner after. The idea of going home to change for different occasions or activities during the day is completely out of the question these days!

Living in the Hamptons comes with a serious set of perks. Photographer Judy Pak opens the doors of her picturesque Bridgehampton home to Mini and fills us in on her eye for flea market finds, how her family savors the summer days, makes longlasting memories, and why her garden is one of her favorite spots on the property!

MINI |

Do you have a favorite room in your home?

Our living room has the most beautiful morning light that streams in through a large set of French doors that lead to our lawn. I love having my morning coffee in this room listening to Angus & Julia Stone. In the quiet winter months, we all curl up by the fireplace together, me with a glass of wine and a good book.

JUDY PAK |

Thank you for inviting us into your home! How would you describe the design, the feel?

MINI |

With the help of our dear friend, Melissa Lee of Bespoke Only, we designed our home to feel like our own personal sanctuary— clean aesthetic, but warm and relaxed, a restful retreat for our entire family away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Our garden is a highlight— bringing big luscious hydrangeas and wildflowers every season. The bright colors outside lend really well to a more neutral palette inside our home— greys, tan and subtle blues. A few large leafed palms sit nestled in the corners of our living room, which I like to think brings a bit of serenity indoors. While we love the classic feel of white walls and natural deep wood throughout our home, our dining room has japanese-inspired floral wallpaper (my favorite) with mid-century modern furniture and accents.

JUDY PAK |

What are some of your favorite elements in your home?

MINI |

I’ve got an eye for flea market finds! Some of my favorites are displayed in our Hamptons home, like vintage Polaroid cameras, tennis rackets, wooden oars, woven baskets. Above all, my favorite items are photos of my family. They perfectly adorn the walls of our home and let us relive our most special days together.

JUDY PAK |

Where do you spend the most time in your home?

MINI |

By the pool or eating on the lawn. We have a fire pit and enjoy having family and friends over for casual afternoons and cozy backyard meals. We revel in days spent outdoors.

JUDY PAK |

Talk to us about your kids’ rooms. What inspired you in creating their spaces?

MINI |

I kept their rooms fairly minimal for organization sake. I’ve tried hard to instill the value of living simply with the things you love most, so we donate clothes and toys at the end of every season that we no longer need. While we try our best to keep our home clutter-free, it’s always an effort with three growing (and active) boys!

JUDY PAK |

What do you love about living in the Hamptons?

MINI |

Living in the Hamptons affords us the time to live slowly, savor the days together, and make long-lasting memories with our family and friends. As our boys get older, their schedules during the week are more demanding, meaning we aren’t always able to be together when we want to. Here, we’re spontaneous and freespirited with how we spend our time. They play in the backyard until the sun goes down, we have long meals, ride bikes, leisurely shop at the local farmer’s market. We treasure weekends away from the city to reconnect and enjoy a lazy day or two.

JUDY PAK |

We know schedules can be hectic— so tell us about yours!

MINI |

During the week, my day starts around 5:30 AM, when I look through emails and make a mental to-do list. After showering, I prepare breakfast and make sure the kids have everything they need for the day before dropping them off at school. Around 8 AM, I’m off to the office for a full day of shoots, client meetings and answering emails. If I’m not working with clients at an

JUDY PAK |

engagement shoot or prepping for a destination wedding, I’ll scoop up the kids from school and make sure they get to after-school activities before heading home to make dinner, help with homework and tuck them all in for the night. Around 8:30, my day slows down and I’m able unwind and relax with my husband and catch up. What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

MINI |

Not having enough time. I am a person that needs eight hours of sleep to function at full capacity. I don’t get it often, but I try. Some people only need five or six, plus a strong cup of coffee to get things accomplished, but I value rest for my mind and my body. In return, it just means that I’ve learned to prioritize things at face value, so I can feel productive in work but also as a mom.

JUDY PAK |

in harmony (as much as possible). What do you think is one aspect of motherhood no one really warns you about?

MINI |

Being a mother may not come naturally. When I was pregnant with my first, everyone kept saying life would feel more full (so, naturally, I was expecting unicorns and rainbows). To my shock, it was incredibly difficult for me to enjoy. Sleepless nights, breastfeeding issues and baby burnout had me frazzled, depressed and slightly crazed. Motherhood is such a unique experience for everyone and to set expectations at someone else’s standards is unrealistic.

JUDY PAK |

What is your greatest joy of motherhood?

MINI |

They are innumerable and vast. The best ones are small and fleeting moments of bliss. My favorite though is when I see my boys love one another and help each other. I grew up without any siblings so seeing this brings me so much joy.

JUDY PAK |

Where have you seen the biggest changes in your life since becoming a mom

MINI |

Learning to be more efficient and to multi-task whenever it makes sense. Before kids, I just had to worry about my schedule and sometimes my husbands. Being in charge of the family as a unit but also three separate schedules for each boy, my personal duties as well as those for Judy Pak Studio means there’s many moving parts. Finding the ways you can satisfy everyone’s needs while maintaining some sense of equilibrium is the key for our family. We prioritize taking the time we have to slow down and recharge so that we can make everything work

JUDY PAK |

On the flip side, what surprised you most about motherhood?

MINI |

How much I am capable of as a person, and the ways I can grow to be the best mother, wife, and friend to those I love most. We went through some difficult times with our children and I always felt I wasn’t able to give

JUDY PAK |

as much as I was expected. My love for my family has given me the strength to persevere, to overcome the things that challenge me most brings me so much joy. What is most important to you in raising your kids?

MINI |

I want to raise boys of strong faith, integrity and confidence.

JUDY PAK |

Has your style changed at all since becoming a mom?

MINI |

Comfort above all else. In my my ‘20s, I used to dress inappropriately for the sake of style. Think slip dress in midwinter with a leather jacket. As a mother, I simply have less tolerance for discomfort, being warm has taken precedence over “looking good.” That said, I also make time

JUDY PAK |

for a few signature pieces that make an appearance, like a classic LBD around the holidays, or a flirty datenight ensemble. MINI |

Where do you shop for yourself and your boys?

Because I don’t have much time, I do a lot of shopping online. For myself, Net-a-Porter, Club Monaco, Intermix, and Far Fetch. And basically anything with express shipping! For the boys, Zara and Maisonette are my go-tos.

JUDY PAK |

Looking back to your first days as a parent, what advice would you give yourself?

MINI |

Some things are simply out of your control and that’s OK. I used to be that mom that would write down how long my kids slept, how many ounces they drank, trying to do everything by the book and failing miserably. Life’s unpredictability is a blessing. It forces us as humans to be determined in our pursuit of happiness but also to be forgiving with ourselves when unforeseen challenges come along the way.
