THE COCOON
Amma—a collaboration between Emily Baldoni, Sharon Baldoni, and Satya Twena—launched its first product, the Cocoon, to offer moms the ability to pump or nurse in style. Originally designed by Sharon thirty years ago as she was breastfeeding her son, Justin Baldoni (Jane the Virgin, Five Feet Apart), it wasn’t until she gifted the item to Emily for her own nursing journey that the two teamed up with Satya to redesign the Cocoon for the modern mom. Providing 360 degree coverage, this breathable, organic cotton wrap allows baby to see out without allowing others to see in, making it a musthave for moms on the go. —weareamma.com

Everything you need to know befo re buying diapers

Every parent can agree that some of the first choices you make, from what to pack in your hospital bag to which swaddles to use, feel both endless and overwhelming.
environment? What does it all mean?
So when it comes to baby care products, knowing which rash cream or diaper to buy may seem simply perplexing. There are hundreds of options, opinions and ever-changing factors to keep in mind. Do you choose cloth or disposable? How does a biodegradable diaper impact the
Coterie understands that selecting a diaper for your child is an important and intimate decision. They also address the misinformation and noise that exists in the space, with the mission to provide parents with more accurate, concise information. The brand promises to provide transparency
M I N I s u m m e r ‘19
New baby care brand Coterie has asked and addressed these questions, creating the highest quality diaper on the market.
about modern diapering, equipping consumers with better knowledge to make truly informed decisions. Below are some of the diaper questions all new parents should know before deciding which are best for their family. IS IT TRUE THAT CLOTH DIAPERS ARE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?
Let’s first look at the fact that all diapers, disposable and cloth, have an impact on the environment. In many cases, cloth and disposable diapers have no significant differences in environmental impacts, according to a study done by the Environment Agency in the UK. Cloth diapers are often made of cotton, which is very chemically dependent considering 3% of arable land is devoted to cotton, however growing it takes up 10% of all agricultural chemicals and 25% of insecticides. Cotton fertilizers are also, unfortunately, very big greenhouse gas emitters. While disposables take more raw materials to create, fill landfills and degrade slowly, cloth diapers require water and electricity for cleaning and commercial cloth diaper services require fuel for delivery trucks. Environmental factors aside, cloth diapers tend to be less absorbent and can’t draw moisture away from your baby’s skin as efficiently as disposables, which can lead to skin irritation and rashes. They also tend to feel wet and cold against a baby’s bottom. THERE ARE ‘BIODEGRADABLE’ DIAPERS ON THE MAR-
KET NOW, AREN’T THEY THE BEST SOLUTION? WHAT ABOUT ‘ORGANIC’ AND ‘PLANT BASED?’
Unfortunately, no diaper can be 100% biodegradable. Only certain components of a diaper can biodegrade, a process which actually increases CO2 emissions. As far as performance, biodegradable materials aren’t as effective when it comes to absorbency. Further, to reap the benefits of a biodegradable diaper, they need to be disposed of in a landfill with a methane gas recovery system and most US landfills are not equipped with such a system. Just as no diaper is 100% biodegradable, they also aren’t 100% organic or plant-based. Diaper industry veteran Carlos Richer has been guiding leading brands in the industry for over 35 years and advises that all disposable diapers, regardless of the brand, contain synthetic materials in order to help them function properly. Given that cloth and biodegradable diapers don’t perform as well as their synthetic counterparts, and aren’t necessarily better for the environment, Coterie made the conscious decision to focus on performance, safety, and sustainability, developing a better disposable solution. WHAT IS THE ANSWER TO DIAPER SUSTAINABILITY? HOW CAN WE CHANGE THINGS?
The long-term, sustainable solution to modern diapering is through recycling. Today, there are two major barriers to this: collecting and sorting used diapers, then sanitizing and breaking them down.
Coterie is working on a 360 solution to this with partner Diaper Recycling Technology (DRT), who are pioneering recycling technologies that can recover up to 95% of raw materials from used diapers both energy and cost efficiently. They’re also developing a camera to identify diapers in the waste stream to separate collection. The success of this would mean big change for the country. To support this development and help make diapers sustainable long-term, Coterie is donating a percentage of all diaper sales to DRT. Visit Coterie.com to shop these softer, safer diapers and find the perfect fit for your little one.

MINI REVIEWS We took The Daily stroller by Lalo out for a stroll and share our thoughts on this new, everyday essential built to grow with your family.

M I N I s u m m e r ‘19
When baby gear brand Lalo launched this year, we knew we had to get our hands on their debut product, The Daily. This stroller—soon to be equipped for two kids with its second seat adaptors launching in the coming months—comes complete with all accessories at no extra cost and from the minute it landed at our door, we were already smitten. The branding alone feels modern and sophisticated, yet playful— a precursor to what you’ll find inside the box. Once opened, The Daily was quick to assemble and suprisingly lightweight for such a beautiful, sturdy, and fully loaded piece of equipment. There are stroller hooks, seat liners, a car seat adaptor, an all-weather cover, and parent organizer and charger all included with your purchase and given the construction and use families will get out of this stroller for literal years to come, we were floored at the reasonable price. Talk about a bang for your buck! No detail was spared with the design of The Daily and if it wasn’t for the large storage basket (seriously, the biggest we’ve seen!), the stroller’s portable phone charger might take the cake for the most thoughtful and convenient feature for parents on the go. But let’s talk about how it moves. The Daily is a dream when it comes to ease of use and smooth sailing when out with your littles. The tires are larger than your typical everyday
stroller, but Lalo assures you they will never go flat. The frame is built for ultimate shock absorption and even while cruising over gravel during our maiden voyage, The Daily did not disappoint with effortless steering and gliding toward our destination. And perhaps one of the greatest points for parents to note about this breakout stroller? The Lalo Family Warranty that covers your stroller as long as your family is growing. If you need a refresh, they will service your stroller to make sure everything is working properly and even schedule a cleaning and tune-up before you welcome a new baby. With the launch of The Daily and more products to come, Lalo deserves a big squeeze for truly designing their brand with parents in mind.

“Our unique super power as parents is coming together and truly co-parenting.” What do you love most about fatherhood?
MINI |
Seeing the world through the eyes of my children. Seeing that innate and natural joy and wonder. I’m trying to figure out how I can recapture that same joy and wonder as an adult. Learning about true selflessness and unconditional love. And that poop has become a word said in the house about 25 times a day with joy and not embarrassment – I love that. Oh, and dad jokes. My kids think I’m funny which is the greatest win of all time. JUSTIN BALDONI |
What do you think is the greatest challenge of parenting?
MINI |
Making a conscious effort to not make myself their savior or a superhero. Going against my ego and showing up as I am instead of being perfect. Knowing I am going to mess them up by passing my baggage on to them no matter how hard I try not to. That’s tough. Also, energy. I mean, c’mon— I’m only 35... why don’t they get tired?! And why won’t they go to sleep?! JUSTIN BALDONI |
What surprised you most about fatherhood?
MINI |
Just how incredibly and profoundly unprepared I was and continue to be, as I am still way in over my head trying to figure out my stuff and who I am! I have a JUSTIN BALDONI |
new rule: I don’t trust anyone who thinks they are ready to be a parent. How could you ever be ready to bring a life into this world and prepare them for #angrytwitter? I also don’t trust anyone who doesn’t think they need therapy. I promise I don’t have trust issues. What is your greatest parenting worry or fear?
MINI |
That my choices today will be their memories tomorrow. And that those memories will in some way be filled with resentment for any one of my thousand mistakes I make each month. JUSTIN BALDONI |
What have you loved about watching Emily become a mom?
MINI |
My wife. I don’t have words for how deeply I respect my wife. She is an absolutely stunning mother. Filled with grace. So patient (although she thinks she isn’t, and it’s really funny when she loses it. But don’t smile when that happens... big mistake). Emily is a real-life angel with an intuition that I rely on for everything. She really “feels” our kids in a way I can’t. She is somehow in-tune with everything and knows what they need before they need it. I don’t know how she does it. We often talk about this, that if the world were right side up, mothers would be the real celebrities. JUSTIN BALDONI |
What traits do you hope your kids inherit from Emily?
MINI |
Her kindness. Her grace. Her intuition. Her innate goodness. Her unmatched grounding and quiet strength. Her resilience. Her empathy and capacity to hold another human’s darkness without judgement. Her sense of justice and wisdom. I could go on and on. I hope they grow up and have much more of her than me. But I hope they have my sense of humor, because I’m definitely funnier. JUSTIN BALDONI |
What makes you two a great team when it comes to parenting?
MINI |
If you could give your kids one piece of advice, what would it be?
MINI |
Something you should know about me is I have a hard time with rules, so I’m not going to just leave them one. But if I had to leave them “some” advice it would be... JUSTIN BALDONI |
Honest answer? We are complete opposites and I am kind of like a third child she often has to take care of. But I think because we often see things on such extreme ends, we find ourselves meeting in the middle a lot and realizing that our unique super power as parents is just that— coming together and truly co-parenting. Consulting. Talking. Sometimes fighting, but mostly talking through our thoughts and feelings and not being attached to who is right and wrong. When we do that, which is actually often, we rarely go wrong. It’s really a beautiful thing and something I never thought I would actually experience. JUSTIN BALDONI |
Lead with your heart. When you don’t know the answer, say it. When that voice inside you is telling you something, listen. Love deeply, even when it hurts. Trust God— we didn’t create ourselves. We can’t even recycle the right way, how the hell could we have any comprehension of God’s infiniteness and unconditional love? And when you are really going through a tough time and don’t know what to do, just think about what your mother would do, and do that. Finally, “Where there is love, nothing is too much trouble and there is always time.” -`Abdu’l-Bahá
What do you love most about motherhood?
MINI |
The fact that I get to experience unconditional love. I get to give it and I get to receive it. It’s a feeling that can’t be put into words, but it’s the most beautiful thing in the world. EMILY BALDONI |
What do you think is the greatest challenge of motherhood?
MINI |
Sleep deprivation to the point of insanity. I’ve been there. And I totally get why it’s used as an actual form of torture.
EMILY BALDONI |
What surprised you most about motherhood?
MINI |
How lonely it can be even though you know millions of others are going through the same thing. If people weren’t so afraid of talking about the challenges of motherhood, I think it would be so much easier to build communities and support systems where we can hold a safe space for each other. A space to show up exactly how we feel, through the good, the bad, and the ugly.

That I’m going to mess up my kids and fail to give them the tools to help them soar through life.
EMILY BALDONI |
What have you loved about watching Justin become a dad?
MINI |
So many things. But one that really stands out is that Justin has an incredible way of bringing magic to the smallest moments. It’s like watching Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman! The kids’ eyes light up whenever he comes into the room because Daddy can match their natural ability of seeing magic everywhere.
EMILY BALDONI |
What traits do you hope your kids inherit from Justin?
MINI |
His ability to create special moments, his compassion, kindness and generosity toward people who are less fortunate than us, his resourcefulness, and his drive to leave the world a little bit better than he found it.
EMILY BALDONI |
What makes you two a great team when it comes to parenting?
MINI |
We are very different people, and we know that if we meet in the middle, we’re golden, so we’ve become very good at listening to each other and learning from each other. We also both love hard and are not afraid to show our vulnerability, which I think are two of the most important ingredients in parenthood.
EMILY BALDONI |
Talk to us about Amma, and your first product, the Cocoon. What inspired you to bring this to moms today?
MINI |
The original version of the Cocoon was designed by Justin’s mom Sharon back in the ‘80s when he was born, and she gifted it to me when we had Maiya in 2015. It was a game changer for me, as I had been looking for something beautiful that fit my style, and also worked as a cover for those moments when I wanted some privacy. There was nothing like it on the market, so we decided to launch AMMA and redesign the Cocoon for the modern mama. It’s been received with so much love and excitement from mamas all over the world. We want to pull breastfeeding mothers out of the dark corners and cramped closets and make them feel comfortable to breastfeed in style whenever they want, wher-

ever they may be. It’s breathable, light, 100% organic cotton, and knitted in a way that allows baby to see out but nobody can see in. It can be used as a breastfeeding cover, but stands on its own as a gorgeous garment. I use it as a poncho, cape, scarf, and take it off to use as a stroller cover or baby blanket. It does it all! I can’t be on a flight without it if I’m traveling with my kiddos; they’ll only sleep if they’re under the Cocoon. If you could give your kids one piece of advice, what would it be?

Let’s dive right into your life as a mom. What does your morning routine look like?
MINI |
I wake up around 7 AM and drink a big glass of water. I take vitamins, stretch, and wake up my kids for a nourishing breakfast. During the summer, I drive them to day camp, or if they’re doing an away camp, I like to fit in a pilates class. JENNI KAYNE |
You recently welcomed Baby Trooper into your family. What changes did you experience this time around with Baby #3?
MINI |
My pregnancy was pretty easy, except that I broke my leg when I was ten weeks pregnant and had to have surgery, which was pretty scary. I was on crutches until I was 20 weeks pregnant JENNI KAYNE |
which slowed me down a lot. At the same time, it allowed me to take it easy, take care of myself, and be in the moment. Trooper is so easy. Everything is more relaxed with him and so fun. I’m cherishing each moment and in no rush to get the the next phase. Having a third has definitely thrown everything on its head and there is a lot more chaos and less downtime for us, but it’s all worth it.
Tell us how you decided on your kids’ names.
MINI |
We named Trooper because he had gone through so much and ended up being so healthy and happy when he was born. Tanner we read in a book the day we went to the hospital and we loved it. Ripley was named after a friend’s brother. We loved the name, whether we were having a boy or a girl. JENNI KAYNE |
MINI |
What do you think is the greatest challenge of motherhood?
MINI |
The biggest challenge in life in general, but especially motherhood, is staying present and letting go of the things you can’t control.
My extended family and network of friends is a huge help. I grew up going to friends’ houses all the time and I can’t imagine not having that support system and community for my kids too.

What is most important to you in raising your children?
MINI |
Speaking on the Jenni Kayne brand, how would you describe the overall aesthetic? What does the Jenni Kayne brand embody?
MINI |
I like to call the aesthetic “warm minimalism.” The brand embodies living simply but beautifully, embracing the natural world, and finding ways to slow down in our busy lives to make moments memorable. JENNI KAYNE |
Since you’re a style guru, what is your idea of the perfect summer ensemble?
MINI |
Giving them the confidence they need to be themselves, making sure they grow into kind and thoughtful people who help others, and making sure our family unit stays strong and stable so there’s always a safe place for them to come home. JENNI KAYNE |
I love a simple sundress. Cotton and linen are absolute musts in warm weather. Wherever I am, you can always catch me in a wide-brimmed sun hat and a pair of espadrille flats. JENNI KAYNE |
Let’s talk about your book— Pacific Natural. What inspired you to create this book and what can we find inside?
MINI |
What do you think are must-have elements for summer entertaining?
MINI |
IA good set of servingware and glassware that can stand up to all-weather use. I love our rattan carafe and glasses— they have a nice vintage-y feel without being too stand-out retro. And, making dishes that can be made in advance and served cold or room temp—the last thing you want when you’re hosting people in the summer months is running in and out of the kitchen, sweating up a storm. JENNI KAYNE |
I’ve always loved entertaining, and as kids and family enter the picture, it’s become a bigger part of my life and I’ve started to hone my style and have a few secrets I share with friends who ask how I pull it off. I wanted to compile a little snapshot of how I mark special occasions throughout the year, because I love living by the seasons and I can always find something to celebrate. You’ll find some of my favorite recipes, some tips and tricks to make entertaining easy, and beautiful arrangements against a backdrop of some of my favorite California landscapes. JENNI KAYNE |

MINI |
I wanted it to feel like England, specifically the countryside, so I used floral wallpaper from Wallshoppe, and found some old sketches online, framed. I knew I’d be spending a lot of time in here, so the lighting is low and the feel is definitely calm and feminine, but not too babyish. LOUISE ROE |

It’s an older home, which I really wanted to find, rather than something modern. It was built in the 1930’s (which is old for LA!) and has quite a neutral palette, with antique furniture mixed in and a cozy feel. LOUISE ROE |
I didn’t believe it. We were leaving for a flight 20 minutes later and I made Mackenzie race out to the nearest shop to buy more tests. I don’t know why, but I just couldn’t believe it was true. LOUISE ROE |

Where have you seen the biggest changes in your life since becoming a mom?
We both loved it. It’s rare, but not so unusual that people can’t spell it. And funnily enough, when we made the decision, we were on our babymoon in a place called the Honor Bar. We had already chosen the name— so she’s not named after a bar! But it was very sweet. I kept the napkin!

Having incredible help. There is no way this could be done without my wonderful husband of course, but also our incredible nanny, and the support of friends. LOUISE ROE |

Do you have a favorite room?
I love the kids’ rooms. I really focused on making them bright and happy and I think we accomplished that! I took care to find pieces I truly loved like cribs from Oeuf and shaggy rugs from ABC. Pierre Frey makes the most beautiful wall coverings and their children’s versions are the perfect mix between cute and chic. The artwork is personally collected over the years from Wes Anderson’s brother Eric Chase Anderson who illustrates all his films to a Space Invader print. The funny thing is my husband and I collected these years ago before our kids and now they’re perfect for our children’s rooms. NICOLE BERRIE |
What are some of your favorite elements in your home?
MINI |
When we were renovating our home, we had super low ceilings and wondered what we would do if we broke above them. It turned out there was a type of beam that we could just cover to create a geometric ceiling of sorts. They’ve become a beautiful design element in the space and now other tenants in our building have done the same. NICOLE BERRIE |
We’re thrilled to be in your beautiful home! How would you describe the place?
MINI |
I would say mid-century meets Japanese pop art meets real life. My husband definitely veers towards minimalism and neutrals where I love color and a little quirk, so I think it’s a balance of the two. We mix found and hand-me-down objects like my parents’ Turkish oriental rug, Takahashi Murakami artwork with Eames-style dining chairs and Oeuf kids furniture. I want it to feel well-designed, but also [like] a home. NICOLE BERRIE |
My husband, who previously studied and worked in architecture, de-
signed the floating staircase and glass wall. I was definitely a shabby chic “Domino” girl before I met him and he kind of Kanye’d my life into loving minimalism and clean lines. His dream is a perfect, clutter-less, mid-century home... I’m getting there. I also like our open pantry. To me, walking into a home and seeing the massive bowls of fruit and vegetables, spice bottles, oils, and kitchen tools out on display means that nourishing our family comes first. What are your favorite elements in your kids’ rooms?
pers we chose for each room. I love that it’s such a historical house but it has fun with many different prints. For their bathroom, we chose a graffiti wallpaper that we collaborated on with a NYC street artist. Everyone thinks someone came in and actually spray painted the room! I think the thing I love the most are both of their bookcases. They’re a mix of books I grew up with and new ones we’ve found. Growing up, books were truly my greatest treasure and I’m so excited to pass down that passion to my kids.

Navigating the unknown. Having Jude was the biggest learning curve because we had to learn everything from scratch. From sleep training to breastfeeding to teething to traveling, the first of everything is the hardest and when you think a phase will never end and you’ll never sleep again, boom, something changes and you’re like, “If only I had known that was a phase, I may have enjoyed it more.” So I try to use that lesson with Sea.
NICOLE BERRIE |
Tell us how you decided on your children’s names.

I adore the Beatles and Hey Jude was my mother’s favorite Beatles song. To me, the name conveys strength, but also kindness, which is Jude to a T. I always loved the name Sea and have been holding onto it hoping we would have a girl. The crazy part is when she was born, she had these pale blue eyes, which I would never have expected because I’m half Korean and my husband has dark brown eyes and brown hair, so her name really fit.
NICOLE BERRIE |
What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?

Taking time for myself. I get very selfish with my self-care whether making sure I meditate and breathe first thing

For me, these are not luxuries but what I consistently need to show up for my family. This might mean something else to another person but self-care for me is paramount. Talk to us about Bonberi. How did the brand come to be?
MINI |
I worked in magazines for a long time and wondered why there wasn’t a place online that felt chic and aspirational but also approachable when it came to wellness. I launched the website with a friend and we would meet chefs, models, artists, and holistic gurus to ask them about their wellness routines, what they cooked and ate to feel grounded and strong. I slowly began to integrate my own recipes and that’s what really took off. Instagram was growing at the same

time and we began to amass an audience on social media. When I relaunched the site on my own after having Jude, I focused on telling my own story through the lens of approachable and indulgent plant-based living, how to transition to a clean lifestyle, and food-combining. It was amazing to see how sharing my personal life and story really resonated with people so I stuck with that! Last September, an opportunity came to open a pop-up shop on Bleecker Street in NYC. Although I had no experience in retail, I had always envisioned having a real life component of Bonberi and I jumped in head first. We’re still growing and learning but now it’s become a multi-media brand with a shop, website, e-books and more, and I hope to keep growing. Do you ever experience self doubt with running such a successful brand? How do you get past it?

check in with the team. I usually take a late morning workout class at Tracy Anderson and head back home to shower and pump again (5x a day!), [then] back to the shop. Every day is different at work, so we’ll either be preparing for an event, a workshop, or shooting and writing content for the site and social media. Sometimes I’ll be at the farmer’s market doing research, in the kitchen recipe testing, or shop-girling it for the day— no day is the same! Around 6 PM, I’ll head home to the kids and we have family time, bath, and book time. It’s a process—about two hours long—but it’s our routine and ritual and when I get to hang with the kids. After they’re down, I’ll usually cook and my husband and I have dinner late. If we’re lucky, we’ll be able to decide on what show to watch before midnight!

Thank you for inviting us into your home! Tell us about the place.

Since I’m a designer, this home has been my laboratory since we bought it six years ago. It started as an untouched 1941 relic I didn’t even want to buy and has turned into such a special little home over the years. I worked with my father’s architectural firm to do three renovations on it (two of which were additions), and now it finally feels “done.” It’s a great mix of livable and luxurious, which is sort of my thing. I believe we can all have nice things AND kids and pets and not have to sacrifice our style because of a growing, active family. Our home is lots of neutrals with pops of color (mostly blue), a mix of antiques and custom-made pieces (and some great discount store finds too!). ERIN GATES |
Do you have a favorite room in your home?
MINI |
I LOVE my master bedroom. We did it as part of the biggest project we took on with this house and it was worth every penny! My clients often leave their master bedrooms until very last because they aren’t public facing spaces, but as a busy working mom, I felt I really needed a pretty and thoughtfully designed place to recharge my batteries after a long day, and this room is JUST that. Our environment is very impactful on our sense of wellbeing and having a lovely bedroom to help me relax and get good rest really helps me be the best mother and boss I can be. ERIN GATES |
Tell us about your son’s room. What inspired you in creating his space?
MINI |
ERIN GATES |
I’m actually in the process of dis-
mantling his nursery and creating a “big boy” room for him now that he is 3.5! It’s so bittersweet to get rid of the glider and crib and see him move on in life, but it’s also so exciting and wonderful. His nursery was a super serene space that I wanted to feel completely soothing for both of us. The mural on the wall is a custom piece by Susan Harter Muralpapers and was the jumping off point to the room, which is a palette of pale blues, greys, and linen tones. It was a mix of sweet and masculine, just like little boys are! Let’s talk motherhood! What has surprised you most about motherhood thus far?
I am a naturally anxious person. I’ve struggled with it my whole life, and I was worried that I would get MORE anxious becoming a mother, when in fact it made me LESS so about the stuff of daily life. All of a sudden, nothing mattered except my son’s health and happiness. It put such an important frame of reference on everything I did and experienced and really helped me feel grateful for everything I have. ERIN GATES |
What is your greatest parenting worry or fear?

MINI |
Health. I can think of nothing scarier than your child being ill in a serious capacity. It chills me to the bone. And while ERIN GATES |
I am less anxious about most things now, any issues with his health is the one thing that can really send me reeling. What is most important to you in raising your son?
MINI |
That he grows up to be a happy, healthy, kind, and loving soul and that he knows that no matter what, his Dad and I will always be there for him and love him unconditionally. I want him to be his own person and know that as parents, we are not entangling our self-worth with his achievements and failures. He is free to find his own passions and life path. ERIN GATES |
What is your greatest joy of motherhood?
MINI |
There are SO many! Getting to re-experience childhood through his eyes is pretty amazing. Watching him learn a new skill is thrilling beyond words. Hearing him tell me he loves me. The best thing might be his really highpitched belly laugh when he’s REALLY tickled about something. Nothing beats that sound. ERIN GATES |
What have you found to be the hardest aspect of motherhood thus far?
MINI |
The guilt of being a full-time working mom. I have always known about myself that I am best when I am working and never entertained stopping work when I was pregnant with Henry, ERIN GATES |
but as he gets older and gets sad when I leave in the morning, it gets harder and harder. Knowing I’m missing so many small moments in his life hurts, but I know deep down that I, personally, am a much better mother to him because I work. Not everyone is this way, but I am. I hope that he grows up to really respect women and love that he has a strong, working mama. What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?

every night to spend a good few hours with him before he has to go to bed. We also have an incredibly loving and caring nanny, Danege, who is such a wonderful influence on Henry and our whole family, really. They adore each other and knowing that he is in such good care allows me to focus on work when I’m there so that I can get home as soon as possible to him. It also helps that I am my own boss, so taking off time to go to a school play or a parent’s activity is totally in my control, and I set up my office three blocks from my house, so my commute is a five minute walk. I know I am lucky to have those benefits AND love what I do. I’m super grateful. Tell us how you decided on your son’s name.
MINI |
We knew before we were even pregnant his name would be Henry. It was just one of those things we always talked ERIN GATES |
about when going through infertility and decided on really early on in the process. In fact, I remember we had to cancel one cycle of IVF before I got pregnant with Henry because of a poor reaction to some medications, and I was distraught and sobbing in the doctor’s office and Andrew held me and said, “this is all for Henry. It’s all to get Henry”… and it was! If we didn’t get pregnant with the exact egg we did, our child would be different than he is, and I would not have wanted that. So he was Henry before he was even “Henry!” MINI |
Can you share your journey to baby with us?
It was a very difficult one. We had tried to get pregnant for a couple years in my early 30’s and had no luck. I was diagnosed with “unexplained infertility” and after two IUI’s and two rounds of IVF, we finally had our Henry. All in, it took about three years to have him. I was 36 when he was born and considered a “geriatric pregnancy” (I hate that term!). I was quite sick until I was 24-26 weeks pregnant and really thought I’d never want to do it again. But we’ve been trying to have another child, with no luck, for the last two years. I’ve had five miscarriages and it’s been really sad and difficult. Secondary infertility is almost hardERIN GATES |
Planning plenty of attractive and well thought out storage and using incredibly durable materials and furniture construction are my top two. I like to be able to give people an easy way to conceal the clutter of family life in a quick 15-minute tidy up— built ins, cabinetry, shelving, baskets and bins, whatever works for the space and budget. And when choosing materials, you need to be careful about cleanability, durability and buying pieces that are well made enough to withstand heavy use and abuse! What do you think is the biggest misconception parents have when designing kids rooms?
MINI |
There are many, but the one I am most vigilant about proving wrong is that whole “you can’t have nice things and kids at the same time” thing. Not true. You can use your home as a teachable moment in which your kids learn that they need to respect their surroundings and possessions. Also, better made furniture is going to last SO much longer and look so much better over time, especially when done in strong, durable, but pretty, materials. Cheap furniture will look cheap quickly when getting daily use and you’ll end up spending more money replacing it over and over than buying really well once. ERIN GATES |

We’re excited to be here in your beautiful home! Can you tell us about the place?
MINI |
It’s been a dream of mine to own a home since a very young age. After getting married and having two kids, I was finally able to buy my first home last year. I had met Jake Arnold through a mutual friend and loved his mix of Californian laid back luxury and refined European sensibility. He has an effortless ability to make homes look really chic, cozy, and lived in. I feel like I’ve already lived here for years, and literally rush home after work every day to be here because it’s my favorite place.
SHANI DARDEN |
Do you have a favorite room in your home?
MINI |
My bedroom is my favorite because it’s so calming and peaceful. It has beautiful views to the backyard and the hills that are covered in plants. It’s a beautiful place to wake up every morning.

Let’s talk motherhood! What has surprised you most about motherhood thus farr?

Raising them to be strong, confident, independent women. Everything I do is for my girls. They’re my number one priority.

Spending time with my two favorite little humans and watching them grow. Both of my girls are incredibly different people, so being able to cultivate their unique personalities and interests is really important to me. I also love that both of my girls have a skincare routine. We do masks together and they both know to wear SPF every single day... without me having to ask! That makes me very proud.

Balancing work and parenting. I’m lucky that I own my own business, but I’m very available and present for my clients and am also booked for an entire year. I work on Saturday mornings sometimes or around big red carpet events on the weekends. I am lucky and thankful to have a supportive husband who is very

I am also lucky enough to have a small, yet amazing group of people who work for me who have become my family. They are not only there for me and my business, but they’re there for my family too. What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?

I’ve been obsessed with skin care as long as I can remember. Even when I was a kid, I was mixing face masks and testing new products. As a teenager growing up in upstate NY and dealing with acne, our closest dermatologist was over an hour away. I begged my mom to take me. In my

early 20s, I moved to LA to become a model, but instead I just ended up booking a bunch of music videos as a backup dancer (and I couldn’t even dance!). Eventually I realized that skin care remained a constant obsession of mine, and so I went to school to become an esthetician. One of my first jobs was for a dermatologist, Dr. Erma Benitez. It was such a great experience for me to see and understand so many different skin types and skin issues. This is also when I first saw how much retinol can help the skin, by boosting collagen, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, clearing acne, and decreasing pigmentation. From there, I worked at a spa in West Hollywood and eventually went off on my own doing facials in the back house on my residential prop-

MINI |
[In the morning], I cleanse with [Shani Darden] Daily Cleansing Serum, which is my gentle gel cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin. It actually helps to add moisture back into your skin with Glycerin, Jojoba, and Sodium Hyaluronate. After cleansing, I use my Deesse LED Mask for 20 minutes. LED light boosts collagen in the skin, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, and improves circulation to give you a nice glow. Next up, I will apply a Vitamin C serum for antioxidant protection, eye cream, and sunscreen. I love Supergoop’s Everyday Sunscreen. It’s lightly hydrating yet doesn’t cause congestion. I wear sunscreen every single day, no matter what.
SHANI DARDEN |
At night, I cleanse with Daily Cleansing Serum again, following up with my Daily Toning Essence which helps to regulate sebum production to keep pores clear. Next up is Retinol Reform. If my skin is a little more on the dry side, I like to use a hyaluronic acid serum like Dr. Nigma’s Serum No. 1 to plump up the skin. Following that is eye cream. I finish my routine with Daily Oil-Free Moisturizer, which provides lightweight hydration with natural extracts and light humectants. Twice a week I exfoliate with the
Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Pads. What is the biggest misconception you think people have about skincare?
MINI |
Not every product works for everyone. You have to take the time to find out what works best for your skin, and not just select products because someone else talks about it.
SHANI DARDEN |
What is your biggest no-no when it comes to skincare?
MINI |
SHANI DARDEN |
The number one mistake when
it comes to skincare, is not wearing sunscreen every single day. The sun will age you. Protect yourself! What are the elements of a great skincare routine or skincare product lineup?
MINI |
Everyone’s skin type is different, but the very basics are a great cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, antioxidant serum, and a treatment serum at night. From here, you can add in more specific products that suit your skin type best.
Believe in yourself, believe you can do it, and eradicate any sense of self-doubt and fear. Never be afraid to put yourself out there and chase after your dreams.

How would you describe your home here in New York City?
MINI |
In a word, temporary. We sold our house in West Hollywood after a couple of years living in LA and we headed back to NYC. When I found out I was pregnant, we were living on a busy street in SoHo. It was fun, but a packed neighborhood had its downsides and it made going on a casual walk with our dogs not so casual. I knew we had to find the right neighborhood before the baby arrived. Our apartment is next to one of my favorite parks in the city and the bones are beautiful; I loved the crown molding and marble bathrooms. We furnished it quite quickly just in time for Henrys arrival. It’s classic and practical with modern touches.

MINI |
Do you have a favorite room?
We spend most of our time in the kitchen and living room [since] family time often revolves around food. I love evenings in Henry’s cozy nursery which is still coming together a year later.
ALLIE RIZZO |
Let’s talk about Henry’s room. What inspired the space?
MINI |
It ended up being a wildlife theme. After my baby shower, we had so many elephants and lions that it was the style, like it or not! His name is Henry Wilder, so I thought it was quite cute that his nursery theme is the wild.
ALLIE RIZZO |
Let’s talk motherhood! What has surprised you most about motherhood thus far?
MINI |
Before I was a mom, I was really turned off by “mom bloggers” or women who constantly share their kids every move. I thought to myself, ‘Where’s your identity outside of your kids?’ I quickly realized that having a baby is so packed with joy it really does become the highlight of most days. I was as surprised as my friends when they joke about my mommy blogging because it had been a peeve of mine. Turns out, I just didn’t get mom joy yet.
ALLIE RIZZO |
What were your first thoughts when you learned you were pregnant?
MINI |
I think initially it was exciting but also very nerve-wracking. I was 28 when I suspected I was pregnant, just days away from turning 29. I think the idea of leaving my 20s pregnant and not out enjoying martinis was a wake up call! A very instant snap into adulthood or at least it felt that way. The immediate reality of, boom, your body now has a passenger
ALLIE RIZZO |
and is no longer your own was scary to me. People would ask how magical I felt and if I was exploding with joy and I was honestly thinking, ‘I have a headache and want to puke all the time, so no.’ It wasn’t until my second trimester that I began feeling things shift. Really seeing him on a scan and it not just being a speck was so incredible and helped me get really excited. When the sickness passed, I was really able to feel calm and more connected and generally blissful. Throwing up first thing every morning was not fun and a migraine can suck the joy from anything! I wasn’t the person who was instantly overtaken with glowing pregnancy joy, but I was thrilled and relieved that the joy did come and think back to those feelings all the time. What is most important to you in raising your son?
MINI |
We want him to grow up in a loving home and teach him to be a kind and respectful man. Most important job of our lives!
ALLIE RIZZO |
Is there anything from your own childhood you hope to share with him or teach him? MINI |
Childhood even with sad moments is a magical and special time. I want to remember what I felt like as a child being curious and exploring and seeing things for the first time. I can’t wait to make sure he has those same moments and watch him see
ALLIE RIZZO |
things with wonder for the first time. What is your greatest joy of motherhood?
MINI |
Henry is the sweetest guy and I feel so much joy around him. When I make him laugh hysterically, it’s basically the best feeling on earth. That sound is perfection.
ALLIE RIZZO |
What have you found to be hardest aspect of motherhood thus far?
MINI |
I love sleep! I’m not someone who does well on no sleep, so that’s been the biggest challenge. Knock on wood, Henry has turned into a champion sleeper and I appreciate it!
ALLIE RIZZO |
Where have you seen the biggest changes in your life since becoming a mom?
MINI |
In the beginning, I was in a newborn bubble so I had no real social life. Eat, sleep, feed. Now that we are out of that stage and I am back working and socializing, I feel like the changes are less noticeable and I have a nice balance of motherhood and independence.
ALLIE RIZZO |
Tell us how you decided on your son’s name.
MINI |
The friends that introduced me to my husband now have a 10-year-old daughter and over New Years in Aspen, we asked her to write down names for the baby to entertain her. She came back with the most impressive list and one name was Wilder Grey. Everyone at the table was like he sounds like the author of the next great
ALLIE RIZZO |
novel; we loved it. We dropped Grey but still loved Wilder and decided Henry was classic and would balance the uniqueness of Wilder. For some reason, I’ve always had a soft spot for Henry. What are you looking forward to most about raising your son in NYC?
MINI |
NYC has been incredible. We sat in the park the other day and the coolest art show just started in front of us. Moments like that happen all the time. It’s cliche, but there’s so much to do in the city that never sleeps. Plus, we can walk almost everywhere, so I rarely have to bother with car seats and traffic!
ALLIE RIZZO |
MINI |
What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?
While I was pregnant, I continued working on my animal rescue, Mother of Dogs, and took over a few of my husband’s social media accounts for business and kept busy. When Henry was around four months old, I went back to modeling with a few jobs which was a nice way to see how I felt outside of the house. It was strange at first and then I got my bearings. A few months later, I started as the Creative Advisor for Babyzen USA and it has been a blast to work with a brand that makes products my mom friends genuinely love. I’m happy being a working mom and I feel that, for me, it was important to keep up my pursuits outside of the home. The balance is key to my happiness and makes me so appreciative of every second I spend with Henry.
ALLIE RIZZO |
As a busy working mama, tell us what a typical day looks like for you.
MINI |
Weekends are all about the family! The three of us hang non-stop and love exploring the city. During the week, we wake up with Henry and have our morning together before his nanny comes around 9:30. Each day for me is different depending on if I’m on set or just doing loads of emails. If I’m not on location, I get everything done between 9:30 and 2. [Henry] naps at 2, so I usually let my nanny go home and keep working from home until he wakes up around 4:30 and we spend our evenings together. If I have a dinner, it’s always after 8 because I put Henry to bed myself. It’s rare that I miss a bedtime. I cherish that time with him and love that he sees me right before bed. If he starts fighting it more as he gets older, I might change my mind!
ALLIE RIZZO |
Has your style changed at all since becoming a mom?
MINI |
My style has always been comfort based. I like to feel good and anything too fussy drives me nuts. I love jeans and flats and save the exciting stuff for formal events.
ALLIE RIZZO |

We love Central Park and have been making that our weeekend trip.. It’s such a special place and we love just getting lost walking around. We also love Union Square Play on weekends. We take him to a cute music class that I think we enjoy the most— it’s adorable.
