IT’S TIME TO POTTY

Potty training often comes with a list of items to introduce into your bathroom— a freestanding potty, potty seat, and step stool being some of the most popular. Now, Fridababy’s Grow-With-Me Potty does it all! The Grow-With-Me Potty adapts as they learn, turning into a toilet-seat topper and finally, a step stool when they’re ready. The brand truly has parents covered with their Poo + Pee Potty Liners that fit securely into the potty, and Potty Mess Mats that protect floors from messes and misses. —fridababy.com

FROM OUR FRIENDS AT Toniebox comes the latest character to sing and share stories with your Minis— It’s Gabby! The star of the adorable Netflix series Gabby’s Dollhouse brings along Pandy, DJ Catnip, and Kitty Fairy for fun adventures in the garden and at a big music festival. The tracklist also includes the catchy theme song your Minis will recognize and love to dance along! Available at toniebox.com.

INSIDE LOOK:

(On Right) Our winter cover mom Rocky Barnes dishes on the term influencer plus life with two boys. (Below) This issue is full of beautiful family-friendly interiors like this sweet space by designer Marina Hanisch!

We’re in the home stretch of the year, the chaotic hustle and bustle of the week before Christmas!

I love this time of year almost as much as the organizing frenzy

I’m bound to begin in January. But before we can get into the fresh start of a new year, let’s dive into these next 100 pages!

In this issue, you will find dozens of tips for creating family-friendly spaces from interior designers like Abby Gruman, Curated Nest, and Marina Hanisch (can’t get enough of those pink acrylic chairs on the left!), a peek inside the Loewe bag of author and Go-To Skincare

founder Zoe Foster Blake, and fast facts from designer Jenni Kayne and Dana’s Bakery founder Dana Pollack. In our cover feature, new mom of two Rocky Barnes discusses her love/hate relationship with the term ‘influencer,’ her unpredictable first birth and postpartum, and how she experienced a major boost of body confidence after kids!

Thank you for a wonderful year, Mini friends! It’s been one of our best yet and I’m so grateful you’re here. See you in 2023!

HOW TO FUEL YOUR MINI’S CREATIVITY

Mini imaginations can tire during the long winter months, but indoor play structures from Cassarokids along with these trusty tips can help light a spark.

It is no secret that winter calls for more time spent indoors and with holiday breaks just around the corner, we know how daunting it can be to brainstorm ways to entertain busy little ones. But shuffling around to playdates and seasonal activities no longer needs to be your only game plan— indoor play structures from Cassarokids, cou-

pled with a handful of ideas for pint-sized playtime, can inspire Mini creativity for months to come.

SET UP SHOP

Turn your playhouse into a grocery store, bakery, ice cream shop, or brick and mortar of your Mini’s choice! Create signs, introduce pretend money, and watch their process putting items on display.

DON’T TOUCH THE FLOOR

We all played “The Floor is Lava” at some point during childhood and the Balance Beam from Cassarokids adds skill into the mix! Minis can pretend they’re walking a tight rope, teetering high above the ocean, or the old classic, tip-toeing across a volcanic explosion!

TRAVEL THE SEVEN SEAS

Turn your Cassarokids Rocker into an explorer’s boat! Make captain’s hats out of newspaper, put your paper towel rolls to use as telescopes, and steer clear of sea serpents!

Before you set sail, take the time to draw a map with your destination, and maybe even an X that marks the spot for buried treasure!

GO MOUNTAIN CLIMBING

Using your Climbing Triangle, hike to the top of a tall mountain! Acquaint your Minis with famous peaks like Everest and Kilimanjaro,

5 M I N I w i n t e r ‘22 2

their heights, and sketch a backdrop on craft paper for their journey! Break out the stuffies and set them around your climber as animals you may encounter along the way.

JOIN THE FAIRYTALE

If you have a Mini Rapunzel fan, the Cassarokids Play Tower is the perfect playtime tool to transport littles right into their favorite storybook! Dive into the dressup closet for a medieval gown, long-haired wig to toss over the edge, or suit up in the best armor if you have a Mini knight on your hands! They’ll be thrilled to stand atop the tower to let down their hair or look for flying dragons.

Cassarokids has everything you need to beat boredrom year-round with their wide range of sustainably-sourced play structures. Introduce them into your playroom and watch your Minis expand not only their creativity, but skill and confidence too. —cassarokids.com

Refresh Your PLAYROOM

DESIGN TALK 3 PIECES EVERY NURSERY NEEDS

Designing your Mini’s nursery is one of the most exciting tasks when preparing for a new baby . From choosing the perfect color palette to picking pieces of furniture that will last for years to come (maybe even be passed down!), there are many elements that will help pull the room together into the sweetest space for baby to play , sleep (fingers crossed!), and grow . photography

Kicking off your nursery design plan with the essentials—a convertible crib, dresser with plenty of storage, comfortable recliner—and building around them is always a great starting point if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Here, we put together a few of our favorite nursery design combos using classic pieces from Babyletto to fuel your inspiration when creating a sweet space for your Mini this winter.

Yuzu All Stages Crib

Choosing a convertible crib for your nursery means you will get the most bang for your buck— no, literally. The Yuzu 8-in-1 Convertible Crib seamlessly switches from bassinet to a transitional midi size, and then to a standard full-size crib and junior bed, with all conversion kits included. No need to worry about purchasing a new bed for each stage of your Mini’s life, this crib has the capability to grow with your little one from newborn to kindergarten with four additional toddler and daybed options.

The Yuzu Crib is just as chic as it is practical. With its stylish rounded spindles, gently curved corners and playful arched feet, the Yuzu is made with sustainable New Zealand pine wood and certified Greenguard Gold for your baby’s safety.

Nami Recliner

You will spend the majority of those early years with baby rocking, reading books, snuggling, and sleeping— all in your nursery chair! The Nami Recliner is our pick for an elevated nursery accent piece that’s both comfortable and easy to fit into any modern design scheme. The Nami Recliner features a built-in USB port to keep your phone fully charged (no more low battery during late nights!), a smooth swivel motion, effortless back and forth gliding, and a quiet electronic control button that allows you to lean back and relax.

Lolly Dresser

By the time you’re designing the nursery, your baby’s wardrobe is likely growing as quickly as they are! Modern nursery spaces need a dresser that can keep up and the Lolly Dresser can store it all with its six available drawers. Interior designer Marina Hanisch discusses how to create spaces for both kids and families that maintain a sense of whimsy, fun, and practicality. Plus, the biggest misconception of family-friendly living.

KID

CENTRIC

HOW DO YOU DESIGN BOTH PRACTICAL AND POLISHED SPACES FOR FAMILIES?

I work with vendors and artisans that focus on the quality, durability, and sustainability of their products. I would suggest that you get to know the vendors that you’re sourcing from and ask lots of questions. Most fabrics have all of their contents listed on the label. Understanding the abrasion on fabrics, the coating on materials, and how the piece

is made is very important to selecting the right piece for your family. Most importantly, I am a firm believer that the patina is evidence of moments well spent and memories made. Don’t be scared to have fun, make a mess, and create beautiful moments in your beautiful home.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS A MAJOR MISCONCEPTION WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGNING FOR FAMILIES?

That the furnishings are temporary. Many times when speaking to young families, they are hesitant to make an investment in the design because of their young families that are growing and have messy little fingers and paws. There are so many companies that have shifted directions and are now making gorgeous fabrics and finishes that are durable enough for outdoor use but delicious enough that you could never tell. There is no need to sacrifice on design anymore. On the contrary, now is the time to enjoy and make memories in your home with your loved ones.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO INCORPORATE INTO KIDS SPACES?

Marina Says

Speak to your kids. Get to know what they love and how they use the space. Consider the concept, color scheme, and functionality when selecting the major pieces and most importantly, have some fun together.

You can undoubtedly always find a swing, some oversized stuffed creatures and lots of floor cushions.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SPLURGE IN KIDS ROOMS?

I like to splurge on wallcoverings and art. They are space transforming and are mostly safe from spills and sticky fingers.

GIVE US AN IDEA OF YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS. WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO START?

I start by getting to know my clients and their little ones. I spend a lot of time understanding who they are, how they like to spend time at home, and what they are inspired by outside of the house. It’s really important for me to create a space that feels personal, functional, and inspiring to them.

THINKING BACK TO YOUR FAVORITE FAMILY-FRIENDLY SPACES, WHAT IS MOST MEMORABLE?

My favorite part of designing for my mini clients is that these spaces feel like a fantasy. You’re instantly transported into their world and imagination. The process for them is empowering and a reflection of what they love. I take that and then elevate the design, incorporate fantasy, whimsy, and curiosity.

Long-time blogger, model, and entrepreneur Rocky Barnes had a history of influencing in media long before her children were born. Now with the addition of sons Jones and Charlie, the new mom of two brings her social prowess to a whole new market.

MOM FLUENCE

ROCKY BARNES is by no means new to the social media world, in fact the jet-setting mom of two is often considered one of the original influencers. “It’s crazy to think I have been doing social for over 12 years,” the The Bright Side founder tells Mini. “It’s been a wild ride and so much has changed.” Barnes has been in the industry long enough to watch Instagram trends come and go, amassing a whopping 3 million followers on the platform, and experienced the emergence of viral video phenomenon TikTok, on which the entrepreneur has nearly 4 million likes. “The change I have loved seeing the most over the past few years [on social media] is going from perfectly edited [photos] to more real and raw. I hope this trend continues!” she tells Mini. But that’s not the only

Rtransformation Barnes has been a part of recently— she has also welcomed two sons, Jones and Charlie, into the mix, expanding her social media presence to include elements of family life, and felt a big boost in body confidence. We sat down with the new mom of two to talk about the shift in her personal style, the surprises of motherhood, and her love/ hate relationship with the now nearly cliche term, “influencer.”

MORNING ROUTINE

“Before we had Charlie, Matt and I would switch off who had the morning shift each day, and give the other a chance to sleep in a bit. But now with two kids, it’s all hands on deck!

Charlie is usually up first; he is still in our room until he is sleeping through the night. I try and give him his bottle right away because he’s at that age where as soon as Jones is up, he is way too distracted to eat. Once Jones is up, we get started on breakfast and getting ready for preschool. Charlie is also very into eating as well so breakfast is our big family meal all together. Matt and I switch off who takes Jones to school and who stays back with Charlie. Our nanny comes at 9 and then Matt and I can start our work day.”

TRANSITION TO TWO

“I never thought anything could be harder than the transition from zero to one. Matt and I traveled all the time for work so it was already a big adjustment for us having our first. After having Charlie, I realized I was very wrong. With two, there is never a chance for one parent to

get a break. You are always on. I would say the second child is easier in the sense that you are more confident and know what you are doing, and not second guessing everything like the first. But the time managment and scheduling is way harder. I think it will be a bit easier when both boys are on the same schedule with naps, but at the moment, it’s hectic.

THE MOST SURPRISING

“I think what surprised me most about motherhood was how much my perspective on mothers changed. After becoming a mom, you realize just how much a mom does and how much is sacrificed. It’s the hardest and most rewarding job at the same time. I have so much more respect for all the moms out there!”

PREPARING FOR A SIBLING

“One of my best girlfriends has two boys just a few months older than Jones and Charlie. She gave me some great advice for dealing with a new baby. When we came home from the hospital, we brought back a couple of presents for Jones to open that were “from Charlie.” We also made a huge point never to say we couldn’t do something with Jones because of the baby. For example, if I was feeding Charlie and Jones wanted to play, I would say ‘Mommy needs

five more minutes, then I can play with you.’ Never ‘I can’t play right now, I’m feeding Charlie.’ Jones loves his brother for the most part, but he is still testing boundaries with him. A hug can turn into a push really quick.”

THE GREATEST CHALLENGE

“The greatest challenge [of motherhood] for me, and something I am still very much working on, is time management. No matter how hard I try, one part of my life is always being neglected. Whether it be friends, family, my marriage, kids, or work. I am still trying to find how to do it all. I am doing it all, but definitely not all at the same time.”

THE NAME GAME

“Matt and I were lucky enough to both love the name Jones right away. We had a friend named Jones and we both loved it and barely even discussed any other options. We had a few other options with Charlie but ultimately loved how classic the name Charlie was and thought it fit well as the younger brother to Jones.”

SECOND PREGNANCY

“I was really lucky to have easy pregnancies with both boys. My delivery with Jones, on the other hand, was very traumatic. Jones had a huge head and I pushed for almost

three hours and ended up with third degree tears. Jones was in the NICU with a hematoma and I was in a wheelchair for the first week and had a very painful recovery. Luckily, what they say is true about the second. Charlie was a breeze— three pushes and only one stitch!

THE FOURTH TRIMESTER

“Nothing can ever prepare you for postpartum with your first child. It is the biggest transition I have ever experienced, both physically and emotionally. It’s shocking to me that more women don’t talk about how hard it is. Yes, of course you are so happy to finally meet your baby, and it is such a beautiful moment, but it is also extremely overwhelming. After I had Jones, I called my best friend from college who had two girls way before the rest of our friend group. I apologized for not being there for her more. I had no idea what she went through. It’s impossible to understand until you go though it yourself.

having kids

more confident in my body than ever.”

be it was the hormones, but I thought, ‘I’m just never going to want to dress sexy again.’ One of my fears before I had kids was that I wouldn’t be considered “sexy” anymore after having kids. But I feel the total opposite. I feel more confident in my body than ever. I will never look the same as my 20-year-old self, but I’m OK with that, and so proud of what my body has been through and accomplished. I guess to answer the question, no, I don’t think my style has changed much, and I’m wishing I never got rid of all of those sexy clothes.”

COLD WEATHER UNIFORM

“I’ve always been a denim girl. I love a good chunky sweater and jeans but over the past few years, I have also been loving knit dresses in the winter. They are so easy to throw on and layer under jackets and can easily go from day to night!”

THE INFLUENCER

PERSONAL STYLE SHIFT

“I remember going though my closet and getting rid of all my “sexy” clothes when I was pregnant with Charlie. It took me over a year and a half to fit back into my pre-pregnancy jeans after Jones, and may-

“I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with that term. It’s become almost a derogatory term in some circles, but on the other hand, I love how it’s given so many people (including myself) a creative outlet and the opportunity to create a whole new career for themselves. I am so inspired and influenced by so many people on Instagram and TikTok and love that there are so many amazing people to follow and not just the mainstream ideas that used to be pushed

“After
, I feel

on us in magazines.”

STANDING OUT ON SOCIAL

“Unfortunately I don’t think there is a formula on how to make it in social media. But what I have noticed from all the people who have done well is their ability to show their own perspective and be true to themselves. I think if you prioritize being authentic on social, the growth with follow.

RISE OF THE MOM-FLUENCER

“I think when you’re sharing your life on social and you have kids, it’s just a natural evolution. It’s been so fun growing with my followers over the years. So many of my friends and followers are having kids right now, so it’s been fun to go through the process together. I also plan on taking as many photos as I can now because I’m sure in a year or so, the boys won’t let me take any!”

MOM GUILT

“I experience mom guilt constantly. I find it’s also harder that I don’t have a traditional 9-5 job. My job is 24/7 and it’s hard to know when to turn it off. It’s crazy but I even feel guilty if I’m having too much fun at work, as if I should only be happy when I’m with my kids. But then I remind myself that I am teaching by example. I want my kids to do a job they love, and be excited, like I am, to go to work. I want to teach them a good work ethic and that hard work pays off.”

RIGHT ATHOME

Ashley Stark, mother of three, Creative Director of STARK, and the namesake behind Ashley Stark Home, invites us into her stunning NYC home to talk parenting and creating practical, polished spaces.

THANK YOU FOR INVITING US INTO YOUR HOME! WHERE DO YOU SPEND THE MOST TIME HERE?

I spend the most time in the kitchen; it’s the heart of my home. I cook while the kids are hanging out and they love being involved.

NOW LET’S TALK KIDS ROOMS. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION WHEN CREATING SPACES FOR YOUR MINIS?

I created a space for them that allows them to grow, nothing too childish. Their rooms are sophisticated, whimsical. My daughter’s room has floating book shelves styled with things she’s interested in, making it easy to switch them out when she grows out of them. My son’s room has an Ashley Stark Home rug (the Aziza rug) and right now he likes to race his cars across the eclectic patchwork design, but the rug’s hues and timeless style will be ideal for each year as he matures.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE WAYS TO KEEP SPACES BEAUTIFUL YET PRACTICAL FOR YOUR FAMILY?

The best advice: use performance fabrics and natural fibers, such as wool rugs, which are easy to clean. Stark has a SPA Collection that is luxurious and also stain-resistant, UV resistant, and spill-proof. We can have beautiful homes that are also practical. But, the most important thing to remember is to not stress about it because it’s a home and it’s meant to be lived in!

IS THERE A MISCONCEPTION YOU THINK EXISTS WHEN IT COMES TO FAMILY FRIENDLY DESIGN?

There are a few misconceptions on family-friendly design, and the first is that you have to sacrifice on style and design by keeping it inexpensive. The second is the idea our homes must be perfect when the truth is family homes are meant to be lived in and it’s okay to have wear and tear. The most important thing is to be together and utilize the space, or else what’s the point?

HAS YOUR STYLE CHANGED SINCE BECOMING A MOM?

It hasn’t changed all that much. I don’t try to decorate around them. I created big play spaces so they can keep their toys in one area and having a designated area makes a big difference.

AS A MOM OF THREE, TELL US WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU MOST ABOUT

MOTHERHOOD THUS FAR.

The first few years it was hard to navigate the mom life and personal life balance. Once I got into the swing of things, though, I learned that no one can do it all and all the time. It’s important to remind yourself of this.

WHAT IS ONE THING ABOUT MOTHERHOOD NO ONE PREPARES YOU FOR?

People don’t tell you how hard it is to always think about somebody else first, and to then realize it needs to be a balance.

WALK US THROUGH YOUR MORNING AS A MOM OF THREE AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR.

Being a mom of three comes first in my morning routine, and after waking up and making the kids breakfast and packing their lunch, I’m out the door and rushing to drop them off at three different schools. After that, I’m rushing to my first meeting at which point I have my own coffee. For creative work, I like to take a walk through Central Park and find inspiration in nature and everywhere around me.

WHICH TRANSITION DO YOU THINK WAS MORE DIFFICULT: ONE TO TWO KIDS OR TWO TO THREE?

One to two kids was more difficult because I didn’t realize how much juggling was involved, and I was still figuring out the work and home life balance. Three kids felt like one more and wasn’t that different, because by then, I had a good system in place.

WHAT CAN OUR READERS FIND AT ASHLEY STARK HOME?

Ashley Stark Home offers amazing rugs— the Danika and Piri rugs are two of my current favorites. I collaborated with Diane James to offer beautiful faux florals and we just expanded with new florals in modern vases and hand-tied bouquets. Each season, I curate a new collection and my holiday collection offers so many wonderful tabletop pieces for entertaining, but also lovely gifts like jewelry boxes, ornaments, cozy throw blankets, and candles. Another big favorite of mine is the Scalamandre tigre pillows that

add so much pop to one room!

ANY HOME DECOR TRENDS YOU’RE INTO RIGHT NOW?

I try not to follow trends so much and my own style is more timeless with an edge, but I’m loving plush, textural elements in a home as well as beautiful molding that’s a little more ornate. My love for textural and ornate has translated into a lot of the wallcoverings at Ashley Stark Home and offerings that give the look of panel molding, metal stamping, and linens, giving a textural warmth to a room.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENT TO DATE?

Launching my own company, of course! Ashley Stark Home launched in Spring of 2022, and the launch and success we’ve already experienced is definitely my proudest career moment to date.

WE ALL HAVE MOM GUILT. WHEN DO YOU FIND IT CREEPS IN?

It often happens during bedtime when everyone wants me all at once. As a veteran mom of three, I do my best to ignore mom guilt and remind myself that if I don’t take the time for myself, the family won’t work.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT RAISING YOUR KIDS IN NYC?

I love the access to culture, and I love how cultured my children are. They all love going to different museums and often beg to see new exhibits specifically at the Guggenheim, Cooper Hewitt, and the Met. We try

to take full advantage of Central Park every weekend at least twice.

HOW ARE YOU SPENDING THE HOLIDAYS WITH YOUR FAMILY?

We only moved into our home two years ago and we had always hosted a tree trimming party before the move, but it’s been tricky with Covid. This year, we’re bringing our tree trimming party back and for the first time, it will be in our new home. I’m excited to host our closest friends and family and to return to this tradition.

Fresh Take

Utilizing bonus rooms such as an extra bedroom or old attic can be the perfect place to create a kids’ playroom. It doesn’t have to be large and you can get your children involved in the process!

NYC-based interior designer Abby Gruman of Abby Leigh Designs shares her best tips for keeping your Minis connected and happy in their spaces at home. photo by DONNA DOTAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Soft Landings

Large-scale rugs are a must! These can be the perfect base for your kids’ spaces and they don’t have to be overly expensive or costly. I sometimes like to go wall to wall with the rugs to cover the entire floor, allowing for fun play time and no worry about scratching hardwood or any other original flooring.

Quick Clean

Large bins, foldable organization buckets, and chic shelves for toys are a great way to keep everything clean and concealed. This is also a great way to give your children responsibility in their space. Everything should have a place to go once they are done with them!

Work Space

Dedicated workspaces and organization areas are a must!

I like to include workspaces that can be moved throughout the room vs. built in desks that are anchored to a wall, etc. This gives the room more of a floating and functional feeling while also giving your kids a dedicated space for homework or play that isn’t on the floor or sofa.

Creative Kids

Focus on design elements that will allow their creativity to blossom. Incorporating color, pattern, and various shapes is key. From wallpaper to functional rugs and wipeable furniture, the possibilities are endless!

HOME AGAIN

This SoHo pied-à-terre transformed its former bachelor pad into a playful nursery and bedroom for a growing family.

photography by JACOB SNAVELY PHOTOGRAPHY design by CURATED NEST

RHAVING PURCHASED a two-bedroom apartment in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood twenty years ago when he was a bachelor, this design client didn’t foresee it one day transforming into a family abode. But this NYC home has since welcomed twin daughters and a son through its doors and required a bit of updating to grow along with the changing dynamic and interior design firm Curated Nest took to the spare bedroom to make it happen. This room needed to function as a playful nursery, an extra bedroom for the twin daughters, and a sophisticated guest room throughout the year. Curated Nest created a custom canopy trundle bed bathed in texture, pattern, detail, and performance fabrics. On the opposite end of the room, a Murphy bed blends into a wall of built-in storage. “ The space needed to be playful enough for a three-year-old, but sophisticated enough to host guests and the older twin siblings,” Curated Nest Principal Designers Erin Coren and Lina Galvao tell Mini. “Plenty of storage was incorporated, as well as lightweight furniture so that the trundle and Murphy beds could pull out. Luxurious fabrics and materials

make the space feel elevated, but are durable enough for playtime.”

While the former bachelor pad has since become more of a SoHo pied-a-terre and second home as the family has relocated to Long Island, the classic blue-walled dwelling more than serves its purpose as a chic getaway with ample sleeping options for both guests and kids alike.

The custom canopy bed is by Polo and Brothers, with performance fabrics by Thibaut and Perrenials, the velvet chair is by World’s Away, and the grasscloth wallpaper is by Phillip Jefferies.
